Anjum will replace the incumbent Lt Gen Faiz Hameed from next month. Anjum, who was commissioned in service in September 1988, earlier headed Corps V in Karachi.

He commanded a brigade in Kurram Agency, led Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan and remained commandant of Command and Staff College Quetta before becoming corps commander Karachi in December 2020.

According to the notification issued by the PMO dated October 26, the incumbent ISI director general, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, will continue to hold the charge as the spymaster till November 19, 2021.

The appointment comes nearly three weeks after the military issued a statement to the media on October 6 naming Anjum as the next ISI chief, replacing Hameed.

As per the convention, the Pakistan Army forwards the names of three lieutenant generals to the prime minister, who picks one as the ISI director general.

Though the formal announcement about the choice is made by the prime minister, it is widely understood that the army chief conveys which of the three officers should be picked for the post.

The face-off began on October 6 when the army announced the posting of Lt Gen Anjum as DG ISI in place of Lt Gen Hamid, who was posted out as the commander of Peshawar-based Corps XI.

However, his appointment had not been immediately notified by the prime minister’s office indicating a deadlock between the Imran Khan-led government and the military — the first publicly known stand-off since the former came to office in 2018.

It was reported that Khan wanted to retain outgoing ISI chief Hameed till December, but Pakistani army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had taken strong exception to it.

Pakistan to drop charges against TLP Chief, Imran Khan bows down to hardline Islamists?

Due to diminishing local gas sources and the failure of the Imran Khan administration to obtain a sufficient quantity of Liquified Natural Gas, Pakistan is on the approach of a severe gas crisis and rationing (LNG).

Following an increase in fuel prices, Pakistan's energy production costs have risen.

According to The Tribune, fossil fuels account for about two-thirds of the country's electrical generation.

Crude oil prices have risen to their highest level in three years, reaching USD 86 per barrel, according to the newspaper.

The growing cost of LNG is exacerbating the energy situation.

This year, Pakistan appears to be on the verge of experiencing its third consecutive winter energy crisis.

Pakistan is currently in the midst of an existential crisis.

Climate change is endangering not just one industry or area of the country, but the whole population's lives and livelihoods.

Pakistan has only been importing liquefied natural gas for six years, but the country's growing reliance on the super-cooled fuel is turning into a nightmare.

Due to a rise in worldwide gas prices as a result of European gas shortages, Asian LNG prices have reached all-time highs for this time of year.

As a result, Pakistan has been compelled to pay the highest prices ever for spot shipments to supplement supplies under long-term commitments, or perhaps to forego them entirely.

She said postings and transfers in the military are not being done by PM Office or any other institution but by "spirits and ghosts". Maryam said PM Khan did not approve the notification of the new ISI chief's appointment to save his government and added that the PTI-led government would collapse as soon as the incumbent ISI chief is transferred. "You [PM Imran] are worse than any dictator... never try to be like Nawaz Sharif... jackal can never become lion by wearing the lion skin," Maryam was quoted as saying by Express Tribune. On Monday, the Pakistan military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations had issued a notification regarding the appointment of Lt General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as DG ISI despite the fact that his appointment was not issued by PM Khan`s office.

Imran Khan wants ISI chief Faiz Hameed to continue amid differences with Pakistan Army

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan once again expressed his disappointment over New Zealand and England's decision to pull out of their respective tours of Pakistan. New Zealand were in Pakistan for a limited-overs series but decided to cancel the series ahead of the first ODI between the two sides in Rawalpindi. England, on the other hand, refused to send their teams for the tour.

While expressing his disappointment over England's decision to snub their tour of Pakistan, the Pakistan Prime Minister said money has become a big player now and plays a major role in influencing the decisions of the cricket boards around the world.

Khan insisted that Indian controls world cricket now as the International Cricket Council (ICC) receives the majority of its funding from the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian markets. The Pakistan PM said no country can dare to pull out of their commitments against India, unlike Pakistan.

“England let itself down. I think that there is still this feeling in England that they do a great favour to play with countries like Pakistan. One of the reasons is that, obviously, the money," Khan was quoted as saying in an interview with the Middle East Eye.

“Money is a big player now. For the players, as well as for the cricket boards. The money lies in India, so basically, India controls world cricket now. I mean, they do, whatever they say goes. No one would dare do that to India because they know that the sums involved, India can sort of produce much more money,” he added.

New Zealand had pulled out of their tour of Pakitsan on the day of the first ODI against the hosts in Rawalpindi after receiving a 'security threat alert'. Days after New Zealand's decision, the England Cricket Board (ECB) also announced that the teams will not travel to Pakistan due to "increasing concerns about travelling to the region".

Recently, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chief Ramiz Raja had stated that cricket in the country can collapse if the Indian government wants. Raja had explained how PCB receives 50 per cent of its budget from ICC, which is dependent on the BCCI for funding.

"The ICC is a politicised body divided between the Asian and Western blocs and 90 per cent of its revenues are generated from India. It is frightening," the PCB chief had said.

"In a way, India's business houses are running Pakistan cricket and if tomorrow the Indian PM decides he will not allow any funding to Pakistan, this cricket board can collapse," he added.

What the cricketer-turned-politician will now do as the leaked documents, published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) on October 3, revealed that key members of his inner circle owned an array of companies and trusts holding millions of dollars of hidden wealth. Click here for LIVE updates on Pandora papers leak The documents, dubbed as Pandora papers, revealed names of powerful and rich people, who use tax and secrecy havens to buy properties and hide assets; many avoid taxes and worse. The names include world leaders, politicians and billionaires. IN PICS | Wikileaks, oil-for-food scam to Pandora papers, major leaks revealed When it comes to Pakistan, Khan's allies, including cabinet ministers, their families and major financial backers have secretly owned an array of companies and trusts holding millions of dollars of hidden wealth. Surprisingly, the country's military leaders have been implicated as well, however, the report clearly mentions that the documents contain no suggestion that Khan himself owns offshore companies. Pandora papers and its UK connection As the country is plagued by widespread poverty and tax avoidance, Pakistanis are ranked fifth among those buying properties in London through offshore companies, reveals an analysis of the Pandora Papers documents, mentioned by Pakistan's The News. British citizens hold the first position on the list, which is followed by Nigerians, Indians and Russians. Pakistan's media outlet, a media partner of the data leak report, The News, revealed that the secret files found 681 previously anonymous beneficial owners of 1,542 UK properties purchased through 716 offshore firms. The value of these properties is estimated to be more than $5.5 billion. More than two-thirds of the properties are owned in London, with Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea being the most popular boroughs. Pandora papers: Largest leak of offshore data in history explained Check list of other high-profile Indian names King of Jordan's property empire reportedly worth over $100 million Putin's alleged mistress has assets worth $100 million The British broadcaster, BBC, another media partner of the data leak report, admits that the report's most shocking revelation is how prominent and wealthy people have been legally forming companies to buy property in the UK in secret. As the report has highlighted the UK government's failure to introduce a register of offshore property owners despite repeated promises to do so. The mention of ex-UK PM Tony Blair is also shocking for the country as the report revealed that the former PM and his wife saved £312,000 in stamp duty when they bought a London office. King of Jordan secretly amassed £70m of UK and US property. The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his close associates have secretly been involved in property deals in the UK worth more than £400m. The report also revealed that how the Aliyev family have secretly acquired UK property using offshore companies. The UK government will have to answer that how such massive wealth and dealing remained unnoticed. However, BBC reports that the UK government says it is cracking down on money laundering with tougher laws and enforcement. Also, it will introduce a register of offshore companies owning UK property when parliamentary time allows. It is important to note that the claims made in the ICIJ report need to be investigated further by official authorities to reach any conclusion. × Imran Khan's response "We welcome the Pandora Papers exposing the ill-gotten wealth of elites, accumulated through tax evasion & corruption & laundered out to financial 'havens,'" Khan said in a long Twitter thread. "My govt will investigate all our citizens mentioned in the Pandora Papers & if any wrongdoing is established we will take appropriate action. I call on the international community to treat this grave injustice as similar to the climate change crisis." Khan, who had run for office on an anti-graft platform, said that global poverty levels were fueled by corruption in tax havens, which he said divert funds away from the general public. He also slammed wealthy countries for not being "interested in preventing this large-scale plunder nor in repatriating this looted money." The "Pandora Papers" are the latest in a series of mass ICIJ leaks of financial documents, from LuxLeaks in 2014, to the 2016 Panama Papers, the Paradise Papers in 2017 and FinCen files in 2020.

Pak PM Imran Khan advocates for global recognition for Taliban

The United States will have to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan "sooner or later", said Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In an interview with TRT World, the Pakistan PM said, "They [US] are trying to find scapegoats and one of them is Pakistan." He emphasised that this was not a rational mindset for a way forward.

The prime minister has slammed US claims of Pakistan being responsible for the Afghan fallout. "Whenever this anger goes and some rationality appears in the US, they will realise how could Pakistan be responsible for this," he added.

Over the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the leader says the US President Joe Biden is being "unfairly targeted". 'Naya Pakistan': 1.5 million unemployed Pakistanis apply for a peon's post

Imran Khan's UNGA address was mostly a rant. He tried to paint Pakistan as a victim of terror, promoted the Taliban as a force for good & spewed venom against India. Here's Palki Sharma's take on the Pak PM's speech.

Gravitas US Edition: Decoding Imran Khan's UNGA speech

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday delivered his speech at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly and spoke on a range of issues like tackling climate change, the menace of terrorism, calling out UN to improve its credibility and the Afghanistan humanitarian issue, while taking a swipe at Pakistan and China.

In comparison, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan dedicated a major part of his pre-recorded speech to Islamophobia, Muslims, and Kashmir, while painting a positive picture of the Taliban.

Both the speeches reflected the different political thinking and the different values of India and Pakistan’s foreign policies.

Modi invoked Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore to speak about peace and prosperity; recalled the words of India’s revered strategist Chanakya to call upon UN to restore its credibility; and uttered the words of Indian veteran politician and his political guru Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s vision of ‘antyodaya’—which means where no one is left behind—to highlight the efforts of India in achieving integrated equitable development.

He also pointed out the strength of democracy in India while speaking about his humble origins as a tea seller then becoming India’s 14th Prime Minister.

Imran Khan, on the other hand, had a familiar pattern to his speech. He mentioned ‘India’ 15 times, ‘Kashmir’ 13 times, ‘terrorism/ terrorist’ 10 times, ‘Muslims’ seven times, ‘Taliban’ seven times and ‘Islam/Islamophobia’ five times.

“The only reason we suffered so much was that we became an ally of the US, of the coalition, in the war against Afghanistan, where attacks were being conducted from Afghan soil into Pakistan. The claims of the Pakistan Prime Minister falls contrary to the fact that the Islamic country has long been known to shelter terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed on its soil. The 9/11 attacks mastermind Osama Bin Laden was found hiding in Pakistan, and the country has several terror camps near the Line of Control with India. One of them in Balakot was hit by Indian airstrikes in February 2019.

Narendra Modi vs Imran Khan: Looking at how UNGA speeches of Indian and Pak prime ministers differ

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is a master at the twisting, modifying, and blending fact and fiction to suit his purposes.

He gave his third UNGA speech as prime minister of Pakistan on Friday, and his speech, delivered over video, was clearly three times more disgraceful.

The Pakistani prime minister attempted to portray Pakistan as the victim of American ungratefulness and an international double standards, in a prerecorded speech aired on Friday evening.

“For some reason, Pakistan has been blamed for the current crisis in Afghanistan by politicians in the United States and some politicians in Europe,” Khan remarked.

The truth is that Taliban militants were trained in Pakistani seminaries by Pakistan's notorious intelligence agency ISI and military.

They were either taught about jihad or assisted in the suppression of women.

Pakistan voluntarily joined the war on terror waged by the United States to suppress Pashtun nationalism.

Islamabad has always feared the formation of a Pashtun state, so it has encouraged Islamic nationalism instead, causing Afghanistan to devolve into chaos.

In his failed attempt, Khan also tried to portray the Taliban as a positive force.

Acting as the Taliban's messenger once more, he pleaded with world leaders to assist them by bolstering, stabilising, and rewarding them. It was almost as if the Taliban, which tried and failed to speak at UNGA, had dispatched Imran Khan to the UN to represent them.

In Panjshir, Pakistan's nefarious role in war-torn Afghanistan was exposed when its military drones and helicopters supported Taliban in capturing the province from the Afghan National Resistance Front.

Taliban apologist Imran Khan remarked, "According to the UN, half the people of Afghanistan are already vulnerable. And by next year, almost 90% of the people in Afghanistan will go below the poverty line. There is a huge humanitarian crisis looming ahead. This will have serious repercussions not just for the neighbours of Afghanistan but it will have repercussions everywhere."

"We must strengthen the present government, stabilise it for the sake of the people of Afghanistan. What have the Taliban promised? They will respect human rights, they will have an inclusive government, they will not allow the soil to be used by terrorists and they have given amnesty. If the world community incentivises them, encourages them to walk the talk, it will be a win-win situation for everyone," he added.

He said that if the world helps the Taliban, the country would not be used for international terrorism.

But the reality is that, with the Taliban regaining power and a witches' brew of terrorist factions active in the country, it is in a state of chaos. Afghanistan has already established itself as the new jihadi capital.

Global jihad is seeing a revival. It's happening right in front of the Taliban's eyes, and Taliban apologist Imran Khan wants to reward these individuals.

It was for India’s government that Khan reserved his harshest words, once again labelling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government “fascist.”

Khan described India as a place where fear reigns supreme. Muslims are persecuted in this country, and Kashmiris are denied their rights, he claimed.

He went so far as to accuse the West of being biased towards India.

Pakistan's use of a worldwide platform to make personal statements has become an annual event. Imran's speech is an insult to the United Nations.

Sneha Dubey, India's young diplomat, gave a stinging response loaded with the facts to Pakistan's allegations regarding Kashmir before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Dubey used her Right of Reply to criticise Imran Khan's references to Kashmir in his UN General Assembly virtual speech, claiming that Islamabad has a long history of deliberately aiding terrorists.

Dubey, First Secretary of India said at UNGA, "Regrettably, this is not the first time the leader of Pakistan has misused platforms provided by the UN to propagate false and malicious propaganda against my country, and seeking in vain to divert the world's attention from the sad state of his country where terrorists enjoy free pass while the lives of ordinary people, especially those belonging to the minority communities, are turned upside down."
