Astronomers, with the help of the Hubble telescope, have now detected a rare intermediate-size black hole.&nbsp;

This black hole is hiding the Earth's cosmic backyard at a distance of 6,000 light-years away within a globular star cluster.&nbsp;

The iconic Hubble Space Telescope has been used by astronomers to observe a compact region of space which has a mass of 800 Suns and is likely to be a black hole.

As per a press statement, the scientists claimed that they had discovered the “best evidence yet for the presence of a rare class of intermediate-sized black holes.”

The intermediate-mass black hole candidate is located nearly 6,000 light-years away and the nearby star cluster Messier 4's core.

It is an ultradense region of space filled with the mass of 800 suns, which leads to nearby stars orbiting it like "bees swarming around a hive," as per the researchers who detected it.

In a statement, the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland's study lead author&nbsp;and astrophysicist Eduardo Vitral said, "It's too tiny for us to be able to explain other than it being a single black hole. Alternatively, there might be a stellar mechanism we simply don't know about, at least within current physics."

<h2>How did the scientists detect black holes?</h2>

The data collected by the European Space Agency's star-mapping&nbsp;Gaia spacecraft was used by the team to study the chaotic motion of stars at M4's centre.&nbsp;

In this region, they are trapped in the gravitational field of suspected black holes, "like bees swarming around a hive," said the team members.

"If the object isn't a single intermediate-mass black hole, it would require an estimated 40 smaller black holes crammed into a space only one-tenth of a light-year across to produce the observed stellar motions," wrote team members, in the same statement.&nbsp;

Alternatively, there might be a stellar mechanism we simply don't know about, at least within current physics." How did the scientists detect black holes? The data collected by the European Space Agency's star-mapping Gaia spacecraft was used by the team to study the chaotic motion of stars at M4's centre. In this region, they are trapped in the gravitational field of suspected black holes, "like bees swarming around a hive," said the team members. "If the object isn't a single intermediate-mass black hole, it would require an estimated 40 smaller black holes crammed into a space only one-tenth of a light-year across to produce the observed stellar motions," wrote team members, in the same statement. The admired Hubble Space Telescope, which has revolutionised astronomical discovery since its launch in 1990, will ease into retirement with a scaled-back observing program, NASA officials said on Tuesday (June 4).

One of the three gyroscopes that manages the direction in which the telescope points has become unstable in recent months, leading to intermittent "safe mode" episodes.

"After carrying out a series of tests and carefully considering our options, we have decided that we will transition Hubble to operate using only one of its three remaining gyros," said NASA's Mark Clampin, director of the astrophysics division.

The transition, which is expected to be completed by mid-June, will reduce Hubble's efficiency at carrying out science observations by 12 per cent, dropping from 85 orbits a week to 74, informed Patrick Crouse, project manager for the Hubble Space Telescope mission.

The telescope can still observe the entire night sky throughout the year; it can no longer follow objects closer than Mars. These close-up observations were uncommon anyway, according to Crouse.

As per NASA’s calculations, there is a greater than 70 per cent chance of operating with this configuration through 2035.&nbsp;

At the end of the telescope's life, NASA plans to safely de-orbit or otherwise dispose of the popular science instrument.

"We do not see Hubble as being on its last legs, we do think it's a very capable observatory, (poised) to do exciting science with other observatories in orbit and those that will join us in orbit," said Crouse.

The telescope was launched in 1990 and operates about 320 miles (515 kilometers) above Earth, it was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble.

Between 1993 and 2009 astronauts visited Hubble five times on repair missions.

NASA and SpaceX earlier said they were studying a probable mission that would re-boost Hubble's orbit, which slowly decays over time due to Earth's gravitational pull, and part of that review also considered ways to alleviate against the loss of gyros.

However, Clampin downplayed the idea of adding external gyroscopes, calling them "vague concepts" that were never genuinely explored.

Hubble continues to make significant discoveries, including in 2022 when it detected the farthest individual star ever seen -- Earendel, whose light took 12.9 billion years to reach us.

Clampin said despite its waning capacity, Hubble keeps performing a "breadth of great science," from exploring objects in our solar system to investigating early galaxies to collaborating with the newer James Webb Space Telescope to investigate the atmospheres of exoplanets.

There are three such gyroscopes aboard the spacecraft and only one of them is facing issues. NASA scientists are believed to be working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Third gyroscope reserved for future missions The Hubble telescope doesn’t work at its full capacity as the third gyroscope is reserved for future operations. As of now, it is guided and operated by just one of two gyroscopes. The same gyro faced issues in December 2023 as well after NASA scientists reconfigured the telescope to operate in high-performance mode. Hubble's latest marvel: Twin Jet Nebula stuns everyone!

In times when James Webb Space Telescope appears to be hogging all the limelight, trusty ol' Hubble Space Telescope is quietly but consistently doing its work and sending us brilliant pics to marvel at. Hubble Space Telescope spots a massive star-forming region in the Milky Way

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European Space Agency (ESA) announced that the Hubble Space Telescope released an image of a "monster merger" of two galaxies.&nbsp;

The image features Arp 122, which is a peculiar galaxy that in fact comprises two galaxies – NGC 6040, the tilted, warped spiral galaxy and LEDA 59642, the round, face-on spiral.&nbsp;

What's interesting is that NASA has said that both galaxies are in the midst of a collision — similar to the Andromeda–Milky Way prediction, which is said to occur in about 4.5 billion years.&nbsp;

The Hubble Space Telescope of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has captured a breathtaking image of the planet Jupiter. The image is in a colour composite of ultraviolet wavelengths.&nbsp;

Jupiter and the Sun are on opposite sides of the sky. This view of the planet includes the iconic and massive storm called the "Great Red Spot". The image has been released to honour the opposition.

Though the storm appears red to the naked eye, it appears deeper in this UV image because high-altitude haze particles absorb light at these wavelengths.

The reddish, wavy polar hazes absorb slightly less of this light because of changes in particle size, content, or altitude. &nbsp;

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and is the largest planet in the solar system, which is more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined.

It is called the gas giant planet. Its stripes and swirls are basically cold, windy clouds of ammonia and water, which are floating in an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium.

"The data used to create this ultraviolet image is part of a Hubble proposal that looked at Jupiter's stealthy superstorm system. The researchers plan to map deep water clouds using the Hubble data to define 3D cloud structures in Jupiter's atmosphere," Nasa said.&nbsp;

James Webb Space Telescope may have now become humanity's primary eye in the sky but noone can sideline Hubble Space Telescope which is still clicking photos of the endless expanse even after so many decades. It has clicked a beautiful new image.

The image shows two galaxies. These two galaxies look as if they are colliding or overlapping. The result is a marvellous image.

Although the two galaxies appear to be overlapping, they are not actually so. They look like they are overlapping but just because how Hubble is looking at it. These are in reality, two separate galaxies.

These two galaxies have been designated SDSS J115331 and LEDA 2073461 respectively. Both of these galaxies are a billion light years away from Earth.

The two galaxies were classified as part of Galaxy Zoo Project. This is a massive citizen science project which lets thousands of volunteers across the world classify galaxies. Such a classification is done by using images taken by robotic telescopes.

"A US military MQ-9 remotely-piloted aircraft was shot down off the coast of Yemen by Houthi forces," AFP quoted an unnamed US official.

Houthi rebels captured Yemen's capital Sanaa in the year 2014. They still control a large part of the country. The rebels had claimed responsibility for shooting down the US drone earlier on Wednesday.

While Hubble does not possess the same quality of cameras as that on the James Webb telescope, the Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys were able to capture the image.

The cluster contained of millions of stars and although the image quality was quite advanced, it was not possible to understand individual bodies. Due to the proximity of Hubble to the cluster, the image did not get as distorted as the ones that are taken by telescopes from the earth’s surface.

The cluster has become quite popular among the researchers since its discovery, and it has added to the number of new celestial bodies that the Hubble Telescope has captured in the recent past.

In a statement released by University of Toronto, Lamiya Mowla, the lead author on the paper, said that the Hubble has brought about a “renaissance in the study" in how the researchers study the galaxies. He also said that the 3D-DASH system has also improved its wide-area imaging.

During a spectacular head-on collision between two galaxies, the Cartwheel, which is located around 500 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Sculptor, gained its shape.

As per a joint statement by NASA and the ESA, the impact sent two rings expanding from the galaxy's centre.

What is gravitational lensing?

A large celestial body having huge amount of mass, a galaxy for example, has an effect on the spacetime fabric around it. The massive gravity ‘bends’ the fabric of the space. This is called gravitational lensing. Due to this bending, some rays of light emanating from the same object cause the lensing (or an object placed behind the object causing the lensing) travel along the bent space-time fabric. This forms a mirror image of, either the same object or the object behind it. 
In this case, the mirror-image is of the same galaxy. 
Another feature of such a lensing is that it magnifies the image of the object. This makes it&nbsp;easier for us to study the celestial body in detail.

A galactic gem: Hubble Space Telescope captures an unusual multi-armed galaxy merger

A rogue black hole has been found wandering through space aimlessly 5,000 light-years away from Earth, scientists have said. It is the&nbsp;first known isolated stellar-mass black hole.&nbsp;

Moreover, their discovery also suggests that the nearest rogue black hole to Earth might be as close as 80 light-years away.

The astronomers spotted the lone stellar object through NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The black hole first revealed itself in 2011, when its gravity briefly magnified the light from a more distant star.

But at the time, its true nature eluded researchers. Now, two teams of astronomers—led by astronomers Casey Lam and Jessica Lu of the University of California, Berkeley—have analysed Hubble Space Telescope images to unmask the object’s identity — and have come to somewhat different conclusions.

But the new study suggests that it could be a neutron star, rather than a black hole, given the mass range of the object.

"This is the first free-floating black hole or neutron star discovered with gravitational microlensing," Lu told Science Alert.

"With microlensing, we're able to probe these lonely, compact objects and weigh them. I think we have opened a new window onto these dark objects, which can't be seen any other way."

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes form when massive stars — at least several times the heft of the sun — collapse under their own gravity at the end of their lives.

Astronomers believe that there are about a billion neutron stars and around 100 million stellar-mass black holes in our galaxy. But these objects aren’t easy to spot. Neutron stars are so tiny — about the size of a city — that they don’t produce much light. And black holes emit no light at all.

The researchers at the University of Toronto came up with a new technique known as Drift and Shift (DASH) to catch the image and according to their study, it was able to create an image almost eight times larger than the normal pictures taken by the Hubble telescope.

According to a paper to be published in The Astrophysical Journal, the technique helps the Hubble to take eight pictures per orbit instead of one picture resulting in a massive increase in data and the images are finally put together to create a panoramic view.

"The 3D-DASH programme extends Hubble's legacy in wide-area imaging so we can begin to unravel the mysteries of the galaxies beyond our own," he added.

We can breathe a little sigh of relief though because the galactic collision will take place billions of years from now. This collision of galaxies may not be as apocalyptic as movies have us believe. But immense gravities of Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will tear material out from the cosmic dance partners. After a merger process that will last billions of years still, both galaxies will lose their spiral shapes and the resulting 'Milkdromeda' galaxy will have an elliptical shape just like NGC 474 which Hubble has clicked! &nbsp;

Hubble clicks photo that shows future of Milky Way Galaxy

The study of the universe’s expansion rate has been a topic that has fascinated scientists and astronomers for a very long time. Since the initial studies conducted in the 1920s by astronomers Edwin P. Hubble and Georges Lemaitre to the discovery of ‘dark energy’ towards the end of the 1990s, the advancement in the field has been slow but steady. However, the Hubble Space Telescope has been providing a huge amount of data for the scientists to study and NASA believes that something strange is happening in the universe considering how fast it is expanding.

According to NASA, the data provided by the Hubble Space Telescope shows that the rate of expansion has become much quicker in comparison to the expected rate. But NASA was not able to provide a concrete reason behind the discrepancy and went on to call it “something weird”.

“You are getting the most precise measure of the expansion rate for the universe from the gold standard of telescopes and cosmic mile markers,” said Adam Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in a statement.

Riess is currently leading a team of scientists who have published a paper regarding the data collected from the Hubble Space Telescope and it was seen that other galaxies are moving away quite fast from ours – showing a clear increase in the rate at which the universe is expanding.

The Hubble telescope has been gathering data for the last 30 years and it shows that although it was predicted that the rate of expansion will be 67.5 kilometers per second per megaparsec with a margin of error of 0.5, the current rate of expansion is somewhere around 73.

NASA has identified 'something weird' happening to the universe

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured some of the mesmerising pictures of outer space over the years. It had been in operation since the 1990s and since then, it has allowed astronomers to view galaxies of all shapes and sizes from nearly every angle.

One such stunning image captured by one of the greater observatories was shared by NASA—the ‘Sombrero Galaxy’, which is roughly around 40 million light-years away from earth.

Set against a backdrop of remote galaxies, the Sombrero, also known as ‘Little Sombrero’, ‘NGC 7814’ or ‘Caldwell 43’, features a bright central bulge, a thin disk full of dust, and a glowing halo of gas and stars.

In its blog post, NASA stated that a few years ago ‘Sombrero’ galaxy, which is billions of years old, had a bright central bulge and a halo of glowing gas extending out into space.

Dusty spiral arms that appeared in ‘Sombrero’ Galaxy are made of dusty material that absorbs light from the galactic centre.

The galaxy is named Sombrero because it resembles a Mexican hat. Sombrero lies at the southern edge of the rich Virgo cluster of galaxies.

In the 19th century, some astronomers speculated that the galaxy was simply an edge-on disk of luminous gas surrounding a young star, which is prototypical of the genesis of our solar system.

But in 1912, astronomer V M Slipher discovered that the hat-like object appeared to be rushing away from us at 700 miles per second.

This enormous velocity offered some of the earliest clues that the Sombrero was really another galaxy, and that the universe was expanding in all directions.
