As per the format of the tournament, the table-toppers from the four pools will directly qualify for the quarterfinals while the second and third-placed teams will play in the cross-overs for a place in the last-eight round.&nbsp;

"I don't feel any pressure. If you enjoy that pressure you will succeed. What I feel is that for me tomorrow is our pre-quarterfinal match and if we want to directly go into the quarterfinals we will have to win tomorrow," Harendra said in the pre-match press conference on Saturday.&nbsp;

"We have discussed that in our team meeting and we will take one match at a time."&nbsp;

Since 2013, India do not have a good record against Belgium, having won just five and suffered defeats on 13 occasions with one game ending in a draw.&nbsp;

Asked about Belgium's threat, Harendra said India need to play to its strength to come out victorious on Sunday.&nbsp;

"If we look at their graph in the last 4-5 years, Belgium is a good team. We have to play according to the situation," he said. &nbsp;

"In the last 5-6 months the Indian team has set a trademark of playing attacking hockey which is our weapon and we won't compromise on that."

Speaking about the areas that India need to guard against Belgium on Sunday, the India coach said: "We need to take care about the vertical hockey Belgium plays. They don't play parallel hockey of playing the ball back. So, we need to concentrate on that."

Harendra said the World Cup is a new tournament for his team and past results will hardly have any impact.

"I don't think about past. I never focussed on mistakes of past but what we do is point out the good things we have done in the past matches. Past is history. Every tournament you have to look it in a new way as new chapter," he said.

"Our fault is we discuss a lot about the past but are not willing to live in the present moment. We tend to destroy our future by discussing about past.

"Tomorrow is a new day, a new tournament, a new team, a new World Cup which is being watched and blessed by 15,000 spectators at home."

Harendra said the Indians don't look at the crowd support as pressure, instead he considers them as "12th man".

"The crowd is our 12th man. Many teams (opponents) can feel the pressure. We should take advantage of that," he said.

Striker Akashdeep Singh, who has been entrusted with the new role of a linkman in the side, said he is enjoying his new position.

"I am enjoying my new role. When the coach joined us he suggested me to drop a little down and play as an attacking midfielder because I have a good vision and I share a good understanding with other strikers," he said.&nbsp;

New Zealand defeated France 2-1 in a tight Pool A clash to open their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory at the Kalinga Stadium on Thursday.

Kane Russell scored for New Zealand in the 17th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead which was fursther extended by Stephen Jenness. He powered the ball home to extend the lead 2-0 in the fourth and final quarter with a controlled long pass.

Hockey World Cup: Thrilling start as India vanquish South Africa

Belgium defeated Canada 2-1 in the first match of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/hockey-world-cup">Men's Hockey World Cup 2018</a> on Wednesday.

The Olympic silver medallist Belgium's created the pressure in the first quarter itself through a fine field strike by Felix Denayer in the third minute of the game.

In the second quarter, they did not only saved a penalty corner but also scored again, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the 12th minute, captain Thomas Briels found the back of the net again for Belgium but the goal was disallowed after Canada went for the referral, claiming the ball hit his hand before rolling on to the goal.&nbsp;

Aiming to win a rare hat-trick of titles, Australia chief coach Colin Batch said a disastrous outing here could seriously affect its preparations for the Tokyo Olympics as its government may not release additional funds.

By virtue of the national team's impressive performances over the years, which includes back-to-back world titles in 2010 and 2014 besides the Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games gold earlier this year, hockey is one of sports identified by the Australian government to get additional funding till the 2020 Olympics.

"It's very important that we continue to get the funding. Of course, it's linked to our performance. It was good to have the funding consolidated right till Tokyo 2020. The team has earned that with their performances over the last two years. It has given a lot of encouragement," Batch said at the Kalinga Stadium here ahead of his side's World Cup opener against Ireland on Friday.

"We would like to perform well here, because then the players will get more funding as well. They know that, so it goes on. If we are knocked out in the early part of the tournament here, then that can affect our funding. So, it's very important to play well here and be successful," he added.

Being the two-time defending champions, there is pressure on Australia to become first hockey playing nation to win a hat-trick of World Cup crowns, but the coach said they are taking it as a challenge.

"The Aussie group has a proud history. We are defending our title here and we are looking it as a challenge. That's our approach,? Batch said.

Australia's last success on Indian soil was when they won the Hockey World League (HWL) Final here last year and Batch said the Kookaburras drew heart from that campaign.

"We continued to improve during the tournament (HWL Final). We could not win a game in the group stage but we drew three games against quality opposition. We made it to the quarterfinals and our hockey improved significantly from there," he said, summing up Australia's showing in the HWL Final.

"We have got some belief from that tournament that we can continue to improve at whatever level we start at. Earlier this year we have got some success in the Commonwealth Games and the Champions Trophy. Each tournament creates different obstacles."

Talking about hosts India, Batch said India have already earned back its respect in world hockey with their upward rise in the recent years.

"They (India) have improved. We have played them at the Champions Trophy and that was the best Indian team we had seen for a while," the Aussie coach said.

"I think they will play well here, but again the best teams will play consistently right through the tournament. There will be pressure on India for sure, but they have a good team. I think everyone in world hockey respects them enormously."

Australia's co-captain Aran Zalewski too agreed with his coach and said they were taking the tournament as a challenge.

"It's great that Australia has such a proud history in World Cups. We have taken experiences from the past but this is completely different group. We have now got 10 guys making their debut at World Cup," he said.

"For us as a team this is our first real chance of winning a World Cup as a group. We are not taking it as pressure but as a challenge."

"We are coming into the World Cup with players needing to pay from their own pocket. They paid to be part of the camps. Our challenge is to get the funding in place. We are lucky to have a few sponsors but the sponsorships we have don't really cover the budget of the World Cup.&nbsp;

"We currently have a shortfall at the moment and if we don't get to cover that shortfall, then there is a possibility the players might also have to pay for the World Cup trip," he added.&nbsp;

With world ranked fifth India at the other end in their first match, South Africa have a tough task at hand but Hopkins is looking at the positives.&nbsp;

"Every game at the World Cup is a big match. You try to start the tournament as well as you can. It's exciting that we are playing our first match against the host nation. We will go into the game fairly confident. We feel we have the squad, skill set and tactics to play really good hockey and get results from the match," he said.&nbsp;

"I think the pressure is on both sides. Being the host nation there is more pressure on India than us. We will just go out there and play the brand of hockey that is successful for us."&nbsp;

Hopkins said his side's goal coming into the tournament is to be become the most successful South African hockey-playing nation in the history of the World Cup.&nbsp;

Shahrukh Khan was the centre-forward of St. Columba's team and Harendra Singh was a goalkeeper and forward for Union Academy school.

"Shah Rukh used to come at Hanuman Temple, Connaught Place after school and stay with Pandit Jugal Kishor Sharma house. He was St&nbsp;Columbus student and I was with Union Academy School," revealed Harendra Singh.

Today at the opening ceremony India's reel life and real hockey coaches were present together once again.

Harendra expressed confidence that his young side in which seven out of 18 players are from the junior World Cup squad.

Conceding last-minute goals has been India's perennial problem in the last few years but Harendra said it' is with all hockey playing nations.

"We always discuss India concede a last-minute goal to lose. It has happened in the last 4-5 years, including the Asian Games. But that doesn't only happen with the Indian team. I can give you history where other teams also have lost the same way," he said.

The Indian hockey team is all set to rewrite history as it attempts to clinch the elusive gold again in the 14th edition of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/hockey-world-cup">Men's Hockey World Cup</a> which is scheduled to take place at home in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

India are placed in Pool C with Belgium, Canada and South Africa and will play their first match against South Africa on the opening day, i.e. November 28.

In an <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/ready-to-take-up-world-cup-challenge-says-indian-goalkeeper-sreejesh-to-wion-179589">exclusive interview</a>, WION's sports editor Digvijay Singh Deo spoke to Indian hockey coach Harendra Singh, who said that it is the right place and right platform for every player in the team to deliver their best on the field and win gold.&nbsp;

In this edition, 16 teams, which are drawn into four groups, each containing four teams, will play a total of 36 matches within a span of 18 match days.&nbsp;

Each team plays each other in its group once. The first-place team in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, while the second and third-placed teams in each group go into the crossover matches. From there on a single-elimination tournament will be played which gives the weaker teams a chance to qualify further.

Coach Harendra said, "The crucial match in this kind of format is the quarter-final." He further added that if the Team India manages to enter the semis then the chances of winning the tournament will be higher.

"I can guarantee you that's the only match that will change the history of India hockey," he told WION.

"The moment they will enter the semi-final, I can guarantee you that this team [team India] will stand at the centre of the podium," added the confident coach.

On being asked about the joy of playing at home, the coach said that it is something every sportsperson and coach looks forward in life.&nbsp;

AR Rahman will be performing live, the Hockey World Cup 2018 official song during the ceremony with Shah Rukh Khan accompanying him in the act.

Madhuri Dixit is going to be the lead performer of the ceremony theme song called "Earth Song" in which she will be joined by another 1100 participants. It is with this song that the opening ceremony is slated to begin.

The song will represent a take on eastern culture meeting the west. The concept and premise of the act rests on the two halves that have polarised the world.

Created by Nupur Mahajan, the Earth Song will address the divide and showcase the blend through this act.

The 'Earth Song' act is choreographed by Aruna Mohanty for the eastern elements and Shiamak Davar offered his expertise for the western elements.&nbsp;

The act will be a perfect exhibition of fusion performances. The diverse performances will include Indian classical versions of Odissi, Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam, Sattriya, Kathak and Kuchipudi and western versions of Ballet, Samba, Jazz, Afro, Balinese, Capioera and Contemporary.

The act will aim to connect the commonalities of the two cultures while displaying a full array of dance performance.
