More than 60 people have lost their lives and over 800 people have been evacuated from the low-lying areas of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district near the Pong Dam, where the water level on the Beas River has continued to go past the danger level due to incessant rainfall.

“Around 100 people are still trapped in Kangra, rescue operation is underway. Another body has been recovered in Shimla. The state has suffered a loss of around&nbsp;₹10,000 crores. It will take around one year for us to redevelop the infrastructure of the state,” CM Sukhu said.

In the wake of the alarming situation, the state government has ordered closure of schools and colleges.

“Whereas, weather conditions in most parts of Himachal Pradesh are still inclement; &amp; whereas, it is being felt that it would be in the interest of student's safety that school/colleges remain closed for another 1 day. Therefore, considering the above, the Government of Himachal Pradesh orders to keep all schools &amp; colleges (government as well as private) closed on dated 16th August, 2023,” the state's Education Department said in its order on Tuesday.

According to the regional meteorological department, the monsoon trough—an elongated low-pressure area that was to the north of its normal position—is causing heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand, and has gradually started moving south.

On Monday, at least one person was killed in a cloud burst that occurred near the Kayas village in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district at around 4 am, said the administration. The incident also wounded three others.

"An incident of cloud burst has occurred near village Kayas, (Raysan) Tehsil and District Kullu. In this incident, one person died on the spot and three persons got injuries," District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC), Kullu, said in a statement, adding the victims were washed away in a vehicle.

"Police Team on the way to the incident site (road is blocked at one point, JCB has been deployed for that). Further information will be shared soon," the DEOC said.

The person who died in the incident was identified as Badal Sharma from village Chansari in Kullu district, and the three injured were identified as Khem Chand from village Badogi, Suresh Sharma from village Chansari and Kapil from village Chansari in Kullu district, as per news agency ANI reports.

Earlier, IMD tweeted that Himachal Pradesh is likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers on Monday.

So far, rain-related incidents and road accidents in the state have claimed the lives of at least 122 people since the onset of the monsoon on June 24, according to the state emergency response centre. 12 people are still missing.

As per the officials, 720 roads are still blocked for vehicular traffic in the state, further adding that the work to restore the connectivity is underway.

As per local media reports, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu conducted an aerial inspection of the state and interacted with those affected.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced ten thousand rupees per family as financial help for those affected by floods in the national capital.

Taking to Twitter, he announced a series of measures to help flood-affected families in the city.

“Many very poor families living on the banks of river Yamuna have suffered a lot. In some families, the entire household goods were washed away,” he said, announcing Rs 10,000 for each flood-affected family.

"The children whose clothes and books were washed away will be given these on behalf of the schools," he added.

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for seven districts in Himachal Pradesh and an orange alert for three districts, anticipating heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. The IMD also issued alerts for flash floods and landslides in the state.

Bui Lal, Deputy Director of IMD Himachal Pradesh, stated that a red alert had been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur districts, with most places in the state expected to receive rainfall. An orange alert was issued for Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur districts. A yellow alert was issued for Lahaul and Spiti districts, and the state government was provided with a forecast update regarding the situation.

In the past 48 hours, the monsoon rains have caused the unfortunate loss of at least 12 lives in several cities and towns across northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), responsible for monitoring weather conditions in the country, has forecasted further rainfall in the coming days.

Tragically, a 58-year-old woman in Delhi lost her life when her apartment's ceiling collapsed due to the heavy rains. Additionally, in Rajasthan, four individuals lost their lives in incidents directly related to the rain.

Under its influence from January 4-7, there could be rainfall or snowfall at most places over the western Himalayan region like J-K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It will cause light to moderate rain or thundershower over plains of northwest India including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh," Mohapatra said.

He went on to say that as the western disturbance moves east, its intensity would reduce, but rainfall activity will increase into eastern India.

"As the western disturbance approaches north east India, the temperature rises. Therefore, the cold wave conditions that we are experiencing in some places over northwest India, will gradually abate. From January 4, the temperature in the planes of the country will be normal or above normal," the senior IMD official said.

If the station gets a good response, more stations would be set up. It will also help to check vehicular pollution. The magistrate further said that two women drove electric vehicles from Manali to Kaza in order to promote a clean and green environment."

"Today, two women have come from Manali to Kaza on the electric vehicle to promote a sustainable environment. The weather nowadays is changing abruptly due to an increase in air pollution and the emission of gases from vehicles is one of the main causes of this pollution," he added.

Further, one of the women who rode an electric vehicle from Manali to Kaza said that all the products including chargers in this station are made in India.

"All the products are made in India here and we travelled from Manali to Kaza to promote sustainable energy. Also, there is a myth that we can not cover long-distance journeys on electric vehicles. So, we both wanted to prove it wrong by riding these electric scooters today from Manali. We had a very comfortable journey," the woman added.

Congratulating both the women for completing their journey to Kaza, the SDM appealed to everybody to promote electric vehicles for a clean and green environment.

He further informed that the personnel manning the Gulaba barrier and those stationed at Marhi have been instructed to be on high alert. 
"This snowfall is the harbinger of the onset of winters in Manali and as such, all the stakeholders in the area are requested to sensitise the tourists about the same," he said. 
 
He also requested the people to cooperate with the administration so as to avoid any untoward incident in the area. "The administration is continuously monitoring the situation and would require the assistance of the people so as to no unsavoury situation arises due to any negligence," he said. 
The traffic movement on Monday was affected on Manali-Leh Highway between Rani Nallah and Rohtang Pass after the area witnessed snowfall in the area. 
 
The higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts have also received snowfall. All routine buses on Keylong-Manali route have been stopped.

The ANI further reported that a rescue team has already been constituted which has proceeded towards Kinnaur on Tuesday morning and it would start trekking Sangta from Jakha on Wednesday.

Kinnaur police have also been intimated and a police rescue team along with the jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has proceeded towards the Rupin pass.

Due to incessant rains for the last two days, massive landslides occurred along the National Highway 44. Work to remove debris due to landslides is also being affected due to the incessant rains.&nbsp;

The landslide brought in massive mound of mud and boulders triggered by incessant rain over the past couple of days and several earth movers have been pressed into service to clear the debris, the release said.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms and heavy rain continued to lash across the state damaging houses, felling trees and disrupting electric supply in several districts of Assam since yesterday.&nbsp;

Rajasthan may see dust storms again

The IMD has predicted that dust storms are “very likely” at isolated places in Rajasthan even though not at the same scale as last week. Some places in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura can expect heavy rains. Down south, gusty winds along with moderate to heavy rains are also likely to sweep through Telangana, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

IMD alert for northern India: Himachal receives fresh snowfall; landslide in Meghalaya

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condemned the bus accident in Himachal Pradesh which led to loss of lives of 30 people including 27 children.&nbsp;

A 10-year-old child had a miraculous escape after the window he was sitting next to broke and he fell out after the loud bang before the bus rolled down, reports said. He has now been admitted to a hospital and its getting treatment after sustaining injuries.&nbsp;

He said the accident occurred in a fraction of second and he can’t recall how it actually happened, reports said.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur announced an immediate relief of Rs 500,000 to the next of kin of each deceased.

A magisterial probe was ordered and preliminary inquiries suggested the accident occurred as the driver lost control over the bus which veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge, an official said.

PM Modi took to Twitter and wrote: "I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident."

27 children were among 30 killed when a school bus ferrying them back home plunged into a deep gorge near village Gurchal on the Nurpur-Chamba highway, about 100 km from the district headquarters at Dharamsala.

The deceased children were students of Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School, police said. Thirty persons, including 27 children, have lost their life, Himachal Pradesh transport minister Govind Singh Thakur said.

School bus driver, 67-year-old Madan Lal, and two women teachers also died in the accident, Kangra SP Santosh Patial said.&nbsp;

Eyewitnesses said the bus, carrying around 40-45 passengers, fell into the gorge after the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp curve in the road.

At least 13 seriously injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot where one of them succumbed to injuries, an official said. The condition of other injured persons was also critical, an official said.

India&#39;s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki was in top gear, with a maximum rise of 5.33 per cent. Other auto stocks were also in demand.

NTPC, ONGC, ICICI Bank, HUL and PowerGrid ended in the green.

On the sectoral front, barring the IT index, all others ended the day with gains.&nbsp;

The Election Commission officials have&nbsp;said that it is highly likely that the final count could cross the 75%&nbsp;mark.&nbsp;

The voting&nbsp;began on Thursday at almost 500 polling stations which were open till late evening, encouraging every individual to cast their vote.

In the previous polls held in 2012, the total count came to 73.5%, Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena said. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, it was 64.45%.

Polling for all 68 constituencies in Himachal Pradesh commenced at 8 am on Thursday.

Over&nbsp;37,000 poll officials, 17,770 policemen, home-guards and 65 companies of the paramilitary have been deployed in the state for election duty, the Election Commission said on Wednesday.

The highest polling percentage was reported around 82% in Sirmour, while lowest 69.5% in&nbsp;Hamirpur.&nbsp;
