<p>Tiger&nbsp;Woods struggled late to fire a three-over par 75 on Thursday in the opening round of the Hero World Challenge, his first competitive round since the Masters last April. The 15-time major winner followed birdies with bogeys three times in the first 12 holes at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas before closing with a double bogey at 15, bogeys at 16 and 17 and a par at the 18th hole.</p>

<p>"I made a lot of shots. I don't think I got a lot out of it," Woods said. "I was rusty, I didn't have my feels and conditions were tough early. "I kind of hung through there and I did not finish off my round the way I needed to and consequently it kind of went sideways at the end."</p>

<p>Woods, who said he was curious how he would play after undergoing right ankle surgery last April, found six of 13 fairways and 10 of 18 greens in regulation while making 30 putts. While Woods stood 18th in the field of 20, Americans Brian Harman and Tony Finau shared the lead with 67s and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth was another stroke adrift.</p>

<p>Woods, who turns 48 on December 30, has struggled since suffering severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash but says he feels well enough to play once a month in 2024. He blamed his late struggles on a lack of commitment to his shots. "The middle part of my round it was just a lack of commitment and it kind of carried over into some of the final holes," Woods said.</p>

<p>"Didn't commit over some of the shots. I was kind of squirrelly on whether or not I should hit this shot at this height, this trajectory, the wind is puffing up or it's not or it's laying down -- all the things you normally take for granted with feels and adjustments I had a lack of commitment on a number of different shots.</p>

<p>"It was a lack of commitment to what I was doing and feeling. I've got to do a better job of it."</p>

<p>Woods appeared to move well across the layout but admitted he was taxed physically by the end of the round. "I'm a little bit sore, that's for sure," Woods said. "We've got some stuff to do tonight to get ready for tomorrow. Get back in the gym and get right after it tomorrow and hopefully post a better number."</p>

<p>Asked exactly where he was sore, Woods replied, "Everywhere." "My leg, my back, my neck, just from playing, hitting shots and trying to hold off shots," Woods said. "It's just different at game speed, too. Game speed's a lot different than at home speed."</p>

<p>Woods was hungry to get back into competition, even at a 20-player invitational rather than a US PGA Tour event. "I felt like I was ready to compete and play. <p>Viktor Hovland won the Hero World Challenge the last time and also claimed his second DP World Tour title in Dubai this year over Richie Bland and Rory McIlroy. Such wins not only put him in the right spotlight but also in contention to be among the best around. During the interview, when asked how 2022 fared for him, the Norwegian said, “It (2022) has been interesting, started off with a win in Dubai (DP World Tour Title), which was an awesome win. I also won here 12 months ago, something that was interesting too. Now since then, I have started to put myself in contention a lot, there are a lot of good memories from this year. I have also improved a lot this year.”</p>

<p>The current world number 12 was further asked about his thoughts on what Tiger Woods recently said on the rise of youngsters on the PGA scene. Seemingly impressed, Viktor said, “With every young guy that's winning and doing well that's proving to the guy younger than him that this is possible, now that's like everyone is just pushing each other. There's so much information out there from which you can learn, and with that, you can grow at an exceptional rate in comparison to before, and that's why you see a lot of young guys out there.”</p>

<p>Viktor Hovland was open to talking about the year 2022, where the sport had some ups and downs. He was of the opinion that despite a tough year overall, there are still a lot of things that hook him up with golf. He said, “I just want to see how good I can become, my goals are always to get better at golf and that's what drives me. Obviously, money and other things are nice, but I want to see how good I can become.”</p>

<p>Besides playing golf and rubbing shoulders have some of this sport’s greatest ever, Viktor is also believed to be following what stars from his country are up to. Although he was honest in accepting that it’s hard not to see what others are doing, with his busy schedule he cannot keep a tab of everything.</p>

<p>“We follow the region media and try and follow up upon what's happening with other stars from the country, it's hard not to see what others including Erling are doing. I don't get to go back much or meet them but I am still supporting them on the sidelines. It's cool for a winter nation to do well in summer sports," he concluded.</p>

<p>Earlier, on Tuesday (November 29), Woods didn't mince his words while talking about LIV CEO Greg Norman during a&nbsp;press conference ahead of the Hero World Challenge.</p>

<p>“As Rory said, I think Greg’s got to leave and then we can eventually, hopefully, have a stay between the two lawsuits and figure something out. But why would you change anything if you’ve got a lawsuit against you? They sued us first. I see that there’s an opportunity out there if both organisations put a stay on their litigation but that’s the problem, they’ve got to put a stay on it."</p>

<p>“I think it has to start with leadership on their side. Understanding that what is happening right now is not the best fit or future for the whole game of golf. Now, what is the best way for our game to grow? It’s not this way. You need to have the two bodies come together. If one side has so much animosity, someone trying to destroy our tour, then how do you work with that?", Woods pointed out.</p>

<p>While the LIV Golf-PGA Tour tussle is far from over, looks like it has also severely hit the equation between Woods and Norman. At present, the former remains firm on his stance that both LIV Golf and PGA Tour cannot exist simultaneously.&nbsp;</p>

Exclusive | LIV Golf-PGA tour issue was not handled well, says Tiger Woods

<p>Tiger Woods on Monday announced that he will be withdrawing from this weekend's&nbsp;Hero World Challenge. Woods said he developed&nbsp;an injury to his right heel which forced him to sit out the charity tournament, here in the Bahamas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the&nbsp;announcement, the fans and the organisers were left rather disappointed as Woods hadn't been seen in action after appearing at St Andrews for The Open Championship in July.</p>

<p>The 15-time Major champion&nbsp;hosts the Hero World Challenge and it was supposed to be one of the three events he had been pencilled to take part in, till the end of the year. Skipping the event in the Bahamas is expected to affect Woods' official World Golf Ranking.&nbsp;</p>

<p>WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with&nbsp;Martin&nbsp;Dempster, chairman of the Association of Golf Writers and analysed the impact of Woods' withdrawal and if his 'aura' was fading.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Two hours ago we were still&nbsp;confident that Tiger Woods was going to play this weekend. Then to see him put out a statement that he has got a problem...he will still be here as the host but we all are feeling a bit disappointed," said&nbsp;Dempster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked if the buzz that the 46-year-old commanded on the golf turf was fading with&nbsp;injuries not healing and him being forced out of tournaments, Dempster said age was catching up with Woods.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Very much so. No doubt age is a factor. All the injuries he has had, they are catching up now. But what we have seen from him this year -- I'm not surprised. He played at Masters and&nbsp;he did really well to play four rounds at Augusta. It was cold. Then the US PGA Championship. He struggled there. Sat out the US Open but was determined to be at St. Andrews for the 150th Open," said Dempster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is a reminder to everyone that Tiger Woods is fragile these days. He is not Superman. He has never been. People have thought he is Superman. But as you get older, these things catch up."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Quizzed if&nbsp;Tiger Woods still believed that he can come around and win major trophies by being on the tour for weeks, Dempster sounded optimistic,&nbsp;"If Tiger is fit on a given week, he still has the game. He hasn't been able to do that on a regular basis but Phil Mickelson won a major at 50. Tiger Woods would love to take that record away from him."</p>

<p>"Tiger has proved strong in the past when he came back and won the masters. We should never write off. But as he gets older with the injuries, especially that car crash -- we have to be careful what we expect from him in the next year or coming five years," added Dempster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With injuries taking a toll on Woods' body, questions have been arising if the golfing talisman might be transitioning to a leadership role on the PGA tour. Dempster said that PGA may be looking to lean on him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All through his career, he has been a big influence. All the players look up to him. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, all these players have so much respect for him. They know that the platform they play on today has been created by Tiger. He has had a lot more time on his hands lately.&nbsp;There has been a lot of good things going around in golf. He&nbsp;has been to meeting and PGA may be looking to lean onto Tiger to get his advice and support over the next few weeks."</p>

<p>Asked if Woods will be doing exhibitions as his playing career draws to a close,&nbsp;Dempster said,&nbsp;"Tiger Woods does not do exhibitions. Never has. Never will. He is not going to come up and make the numbers. Ever."</p>

<p>If Woods' injuries subside, he is expected to&nbsp;take on Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in a rather hotly-anticipated edition of 'The Match' scheduled to take place in Florida on December 10. <p>The 15-time major champion posted a Twitter message confirming his involvement in the 20-man tournament, where he is the host, at the Albany course in the Bahamas, from December 1-4.</p>

<p>Woods, a five-time winner of the event, is joined by American compatriot Kevin Kisner and England's Tommy Fleetwood in completing the field.</p>

While all eyes were on American golfer Collin Morikawa -- who had a five-stroke lead over the remainder of the field and was on the verge of becoming the fourth-youngest World No. 1 in golf history --&nbsp;Norway's Viktor Hovland came from behind and emerged on top to capture&nbsp;his second title of the fall at the tournament in Albany, Bahamas.</p>

<p>Hovland carded back-to-back eagles at the par-4 14th and par-5 15th holes, with a birdie following suit at No. 16 to reach 20 under. There were more twists and turns as he nearly gave away the lead with a bogey on the final two holes at Albany Golf Course, however, the 24-year-old youngster held his nerves to return victorious.<br />

He added, "But after I made three birdies in a row at the end of the front nine and I got to No. 9 and I was in the greenside bunker and I looked up at the leaderboard and I saw I believe I was tied for the lead, maybe one shot behind or something like that, that's when I knew, 'OK, if I play really well on the back nine, I've got a chance."</p>

<p>For the unversed, this was Hovland's third victory in the calendar year. Earlier, he had notched up victories in Mexico in November and in Germany on the European Tour.
