A Harvard model successfully predicted 75 per cent of suicide attempts and 87 per cent of suicide-related events a week before they happened. The study answers a crucial question: Who is most likely to attempt suicide and when? Boston Globe reported that Harvard researchers followed 619 adults and adolescents who had visited two Boston hospitals after having suicidal thoughts. They used frequent phone check-ins to predict suicide attempts in the next seven days. Participants answered 20-question surveys on their phones six times a day for three months. They were asked to rate how hopeless and agitated they felt, how strong their urge to kill themselves was and how capable they felt of resisting that urge on a scale of 1 to 10. By the end, they had 80,000 surveys. The data was fed into machine-learning models and revealed that agitation, not depression, was the main trigger for suicide.
Agitation, not depression, was the trigger for suicide attempt
For every one-point increase in agitation among adults, the chances of a suicide attempt the next week went up by 11 per cent. Agitation is a feeling of extreme irritability and discomfort which caused people to take the extreme step. "While depression is an important risk factor, agitation also seems to be a really strong predictor of near-term suicide attempt risk," study author Matthew Nock said. Harvard psychology professor Matthew Nock is a leading expert in studying suicide risk. His latest study will be published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science in October. Nock’s studies show that half of those who died by suicide visited a clinician in their final month. While even a one-point increase in agitation increased the chances of a suicide attempt by 11 per cent, a person’s admission that they were able to resist suicidal urges was associated with lower risk.
Those who did not respond were also at higher risk
But not every participant opened every questionnaire, even though they were paid $1 for each of them. Nock said fewer than half of the surveys sent were opened, and participation fell as the weeks progressed. He stated that those who did not answer were also at a higher risk of suicide, and they are trying to understand whether knowing about them can prove useful. The study predicted nonfatal suicide attempts and suicide-related events. However, two people died during the study, Nock said. He will now develop “just-in-time interventions” to provide help during the time the risk is extremely high. “Now that we’re getting better at identifying when people are at risk, we’re taking steps to try and test out what the most effective ways are to intervene with people in moments of suicidal crises,” he said. He reiterated that studies have shown that simply bringing up or asking someone about suicide does not trigger them, or make them more likely to end their life. So talk when you think it is important, and seek help.

A Harvard study asked people with suicidal thoughts a series of questions, which led them to pinpoint who is most likely to attempt suicide within a week. It also found that the key trigger is not necessarily suicide, but something else.

Harvard University has agreed to a $53 million class-action settlement to resolve civil lawsuits brought by families whose loved ones' remains were stolen and sold on the black market. The scandal centers around Cedric Lodge, the former manager of the Harvard Medical School morgue, who systematically stole body parts—including brains, skin, bones, and dissected heads—from cadavers donated for medical research between 2018 and 2020.

Harvard morgue scandal: Harvard to pay $53 million over theft & sale of human remains

The globally-acclaimed Harvard University has now come under the lens for an organ-selling racket. It has now agreed to pay a staggering 53 million US dollars to settle the civil lawsuits in this regard. Now, this pertains to the dead bodies donated by families to the Harvard medical school for research and teaching purposes. However, a big scandal unfolded from 2018 to 2020. The then morgue manager, Cedric Lodge, removed organs, brains, skin, hands, and other parts from the donated bodies before they could be disposed of.Without the knowledge of his employer or the donor, he and his wife sold and even shipped the body remains to different locations in US which were resold. In December last year, Lodge was sentenced to eight years in prison, whereas his wife got a one-year jail term. After Lodge was arrested, the aggrieved families started filing lawsuits against Harvard accusing it of failing to adequately protect the remains entrusted to it.

In wake of this, the settlement is seen as a bid to avoid prolonged litigation. Apart from the monetary compensation, the Harvard Medical School will make a statement, affirming that the convict's conduct was morally reprehensible. It has also made a number of changes to its anatomical gift programme, and will establish an annual financial aid scholarship for medical students in the next academic year. While the Harvard Medical School dean, George Daley, has expressed deep sorrow and empathy for the families of donors, their future course of action remains to be seen.

Trump administration files second lawsuit against Harvard, this time over antisemitism

As part of stepping up pressure on Ivy League institutions, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Harvard University over federal funding to the school. The Department of Justice (DOJ) accused the university of failing to comply with a federal investigation by not providing sufficient documents to ascertain whether the elite school has illegally considered race in its admission process. According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, the data is required to ensure the admission process of Harvard remains free of discrimination, in accordance with the 2023 Supreme Court ruling that suspended the race-based affirmative actions. The DOJ further claimed that the university has not provided the applicant-level data requested nearly 10 months ago. The development comes less than two weeks after the US President Donald Trump stated that the government is seeking $1 billion in damages from Haravard to to settle federal probes into the school's polices.

A conservative magazine at Harvard University, The Harvard Salient, was shut down earlier this week. Harvard scientist Avi Loeb wants to send a message to the interstellar object, which he claims could be an alien spacecraft that has come to probe Earth and the other planets. He has suggested sending a very specific message to the aliens who he thinks have sent the interstellar object that is hurtling towards us. Loeb has openly claimed on several occasions that the interstellar object is not a natural space rock that was shaped in the universe, but an alien "mothership" that has entered the solar system to probe not only Earth but also other planets. If this is the case, Loeb has suggested humans should reach out to the extraterrestrial beings. He told reporters that the message sent to aliens should be in Morse code. This is what the message should read - "Hello, welcome to our neighbourhood. Peace!" These are the precise words Loeb says humans need to send across to make contact with the alien civilisation. Loeb has pointed to several things that don't make sense for a comet, according to him. He cited data from the Hubble Space Telescope to state that there is no tail on the object. "There were claims of a tail. But since 3I/ATLAS is accelerating and its current size is not much larger than the angular resolution of Earth-based telescopes, it is not easy to avoid fictitious elongation of the image as a result of the object's motion." Loeb wrote in a blog that those who are not open to the idea that the object could be something other than a space rock would be quickly canned as non-intelligent by the aliens. Almost all astronomers agree that the object is a comet, except Loeb. He says that its size, speed, and the light around it all indicate that it is not natural. Firstly, interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is quite large, and Loeb is convinced it could not have taken the trip from interstellar space if it were a space rock. Secondly, he cites its strange trajectory, which is abnormal for a naturall-occurring space rock.

Morning news brief: Federal judge blocks Trump administration's proclamation, Trump-Musk row and more

Allison Burroughs, U.S. District Court Judge, temporarily restrained the Trump administration's decision to suspend visas for International Students. The decision comes shortly after the university urged the court to step in on an emergency basis to block the proclamation issued by the Trump administration a day prior. This judgment is an extension of the earlier restraining order issued by the Obama-appointed Allison Burroughs. Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Tricia McLaughlin, in a mailed statement, said that the ruling "delays justice and seeks to kneecap the President's constitutionally vested powers". It has set a date for the hearing on the judgment in mid-June. Earlier, on June 4, the Ivy League School filed a lawsuit claiming, "The Proclamation denies thousands of Harvard’s students the right to come to this country to pursue their education and follow their dreams, and it denies Harvard the right to teach them. Without its international students, Harvard is not Harvard.”This Presidential proclamation to ban visas for international students was the most recent development in the feud between President Trump and Harvard. President Trump's crackdown on the oldest university started following the University's reluctance to share audio-visual records of students who were participating in pro-Palestinian protests. Trump also froze approximately $2.6 billion in federal funding to the university earlier. The DHS also attempted to block Harvard's ability to enrol foreign students for the next academic year, which was subsequently blocked by a Federal Court.Harvard President Alan Garber called the ban a retaliation "for our refusal to surrender our academic independence and to submit to the federal government's illegal assertion of control over our curriculum, our faculty, and our student body." In the brief judgment, Burroughs stated that it became imperative to intervene now or else the grand old institution would incur substantial damages. The next hearing in mid-June will decide the fate of the President's proclamation, whether it will be blocked indefinitely.

US President Donald Trump has aimed at Harvard University, demanding to know more about its international student population and why the countries they come from are not contributing financially. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday (May 25) morning, Trump wrote, “Why isn’t Harvard saying that almost 31% of their students are from FOREIGN LANDS, and yet those countries, some not at all friendly to the United States, pay NOTHING toward their student’s [sic] education, nor do they ever intend to.” The comment comes just days after his administration attempted to block Harvard from admitting international students. Trump had earlier ordered to cut $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard, a move the school sued the administration for.

"Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!," he added.
However, the university has said that the Trump administration has no legal basis to take such an action.

What does it mean to revoke 'tax-exempt status'?

Trump has been wanting to take away Harvard's tax exempt status ever since it refused to comply with his administration's demands.
The long list of Trump's demands includes broad government and leadership changes, and audits of how diversity is viewed on the campus. It further wants the university to eliminate its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, and ban masks at campus protests.
Until now, no such prestigious university has ever had its tax-exempt status revoked due to political reasons.
Harvard spokesperson Jason Newton said that the Trump administration has "long exempted universities from taxes in order to support their educational mission" and that there was no legal basis to revoke its status.

"The tax exemption means that more of every dollar can go toward scholarships for students, lifesaving and life-enhancing medical research, and technological advancements that drive economic growth," he said.
He added that revoking the university's tax-exempt status "would endanger our ability to carry out our educational mission."
