IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir opts to bowl against Kolkata

The thirteenth clash of Indian Premier League 2018 will be between Kolkata and Delhi at the Eden Garden Stadium in a humid temperature (likely to rain) but still, it is expected that it is going to be a full house clash as the support for Kolkata team at their home ground has been immense.

Though, Kolkata lost their previous clash which was against Hyderabad, in which Dinesh Karthik had added under-19 stars Shubnam Gill and Shivam Mavi but they did not do much. They were definitely under pressure but still, no excuses can be made when it comes to performance in a format when like IPL.

The batsmen of Kolkata, Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa, especially the openers, will have to perform if they wish to win against Delhi because Delhi's bowling strength is massive.

Having led the Kolkata team for seven years, Gautam Gambhir has the advantage as he knows the pitch conditions and atmosphere. Its an emotional homecoming for Gautam also a strange dilemma for Kolkata fans.

Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi recently chased down the total of 194 runs against Mumbai and currently has picked up the pace and will be looking forward to winning against Kolkata to keep up the momentum.

The current playing XI of Delhi is very much sorted but Gambhir might consider swapping Shahbaz Nadeem with any other bowlers such as Jayant Yadav or Amit Mishra or he might just add one more spinner in the place of a pacer.

In the last outing, Jason Roy's innings were outstanding and if he continues the same then any total can be chased.

Though showers are expected at the Eden Garden but let's hope that the 40-overs game goes smoothly.

The Indian batsmen were struggling against the Proteas bowlers especially against Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli kept India afloat against South Africa on Day 2, after he smashed gritty 85 runs off 130 balls. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is standing with Kohli at the crease as India reached 183 for five in 61 overs in their first innings at stumps. Caught on stump mic: Virat Kohli's tips Hardik Pandya on reading Philander's bowling

India surged back into contention against South Africa after two run outs late on Saturday, including the key wicket of Hashim Amla, saw the hosts slip to 269 for six at the close on the opening day of the second test.

South Africa had seemed set for a big first innings total when they reached 246 for three but some brilliant fielding and poor decision making combined to rattle their middle order and leave the honours even after the first day.

Home captain Faf du Plessis is not out on 24 and will resume his innings on Sunday with Keshav Maharaj (10) on a slow wicket that is expected to quicken over the next few days.

Amla looked in total control of his innings and struck 14 fours in his 82 before being called through for a risky single by Du Plessis.

The bowler, Hardik Pandya, reacted quickly though and his speed to the ball, swivel and quick release to the bowlers’ end found Amla two feet short.

Quinton de Kock was then out for a first ball duck, caught at slip by India captain Virat Kohli off the bowling of hard-working spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (3-90), who sent down an impressive 31 overs on the opening day.

The hosts` misery was compounded when Vernon Philander was also out without scoring, charging down the wicket for a run as Du Plessis screamed at him from the non-striker`s end to stop. Both players ended up on the same side of the wicket.

The poor half-hour undid the excellent work of opener Aiden Markram earlier as he compiled an eye-catching 94 before being caught by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel off Ashwin, denied a third test century in seven innings.

Dean Elgar (31) was Ashwin’s other victim, while impressive seamer Ishant Sharma (1-32) induced an edge from the dangerous AB de Villiers (20) onto his own wicket.

The wicket has also shown some variable bounce already and is expected to break up on days four and five.

South Africa have selected uncapped seamer Lungi Ngidi as a replacement for the injured Dale Steyn, the only change to their side from the 72-run first test victory in Cape Town.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul or Murli Vijay, who has the better 'dab moves'?

The first innings for India was quite unfortunate when bowlers did their bit by holding the South African side for 286 but the India batting order was shattered by the Proteas pacers when Indian side somehow saved the follow-on.

The top batsmen and stars of Test cricket could not perform, only Hardik Pandya went on the thrilling counter-attack by scoring 93 crucial runs for his team but missing an elusive century. He also took 2 quick wickets of Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar before the wrap-up of the second day of the first Test against South Africa.

When all the batsmen were falling into the trap of South African bowlers then Hardik found a determined ally in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, together they made a partnership of 99 runs. He also denies the talk of pitch behaviour and additional swing by playing some handsome strokes.

As the 3rd-day play was called off due to the heavy rains. Now, Indian bowlers have less time to strike again because fewer overs now, around 200 overs are left in the game. Though, the rain proved to be a salvation for India side. If the Proteas had taken a huge lead on Day 3 then it would have become impossible for India side to save the game from there.

Hashim Amla and Kagiso Rabada will continue their game on day 4 as the weather reports say zero precipitation and a bright sunny day to have a game of cricket.

India vs South Africa: India under pressure on Day 4

Heavy showers in Cape Town delayed the start of day three play between India and South Africa on Sunday.

The Virat Kohli-led Indian team is under immense pressure as the hosts have been dominating the proceedings so far.

On day 2, South Africa was able to build a sizeable second-innings lead after reaching 65 for the loss of two at stumps.

Hashim Amla and night-watchman Kagiso Rabada will seek today to extend the host's advantage of 142 runs with remaining eight wickets.

The South African seamers had bowled India out for 209 on a lively wicket offering plenty of assistance for the bowlers.

For India, Hardik Pandya played a blistering knock of 93 runs to save its drowning team which at one point were 92/7 after lunch.

Watch: Dhoni beats Hardik Pandya in 100-metre dash, Twitter goes berserk

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya recently revealed in an interview that he used to hide his car for almost two years as he could not pay the EMI.

Pandya, who also plays for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, came up through the ranks in the domestic circuit and soon found himself donning the coveted blue jersey.

The cricketer also spoke about how he struggled before gaining recognition and how his and his brother's hard work paid off.

"No one knew that we had struggled for three years when we didn't have a single penny. Saving five to ten rupees was a big trouble for us. I still remember during IPL, before that we won the national T20 in South Africa, Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament and Krunal and I got around Rs 70 thousand each. I had told my brother that we would survive on this money for some time because we were struggling for three years," Pandya told a television channel.

"We hadn't paid the EMI of our car for two years and used to hide the car as we did not want the car to be taken away. Everything we earned in those three years was about paying the EMI and having food at the table and nothing else," he said.

But life took a u-turn for Hardik, when he featured for MI in the IPL in 2015 as they lifted the title for the second time.

"God is kind. My first year with MI, we won the IPL and then I got a cheque of Rs 50 lakhs. From there, I paid off the EMI of our old car and bought a new car as well. Imagine, three months back we were struggling and fighting for money and within three months I have Rs 50-60 lakhs in my pocket. It was all about saving at that time. From there, things changed," Hardik was quoted as saying.

The Baroda all-rounder has played 37 matches for MI, scored 406 runs and recorded an impressive strike-rate of 142.45 and also has 10 wickets to his name. Apart from this, the right-handed batsman has played three Tests, 29 ODIs and 24 T20s for India and scored 178, 584 and 140 runs respectively.

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has said that he needs a rest, and that he'll ask for it when he wants it.

Kohli was speaking in Kolkata on the eve of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

"Definitely I do need a rest, why don't I. When I think of the time my body should be rested I will ask for it, why not. I'm not a robot, you can slice my skin and check if I still bleed," PTI reported Kohli as saying.

Kohli has earlier warned of burnout.

"For example all cricketers play 40 games a year. Three guys who should get rest, their workload(s) are to be managed. Not everyone in the XI would have batted 45 overs or not everyone would have bowled 30 overs in a Test. But the guys who are doing that regularly are the ones who need to be assessed," PTI quoted Kohli as saying.

"I don't think people look at the time spent on the crease, the number of runs, the number of overs, the conditions etc. I don't think people will go into that analysis," Kohli added.

"For example Pujara will have maximum workload because he spends maximum time at the crease as his game is built that way. You can't compare that to a counter-attacking batsman because the workload would have been lesser," Kohli said.

"All these things have be taken into consideration purely because of the fact that we have built such a strong core team now of 20-25 players. You don't want important players breaking down at important times, that's where the balance needs to be maintained going forward," Kohli added.

India will be playing three Tests, three ODIs, and three T20s against the Lankans.

The first Test will be played Thursday at Eden Gardens.
