New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in the third One-Day International (ODI) against India at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval on Monday.&nbsp;

After winning the toss, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson said his team would hopefully benefit (from the pitch) in the first hour.&nbsp;

"We do know that If we play our best cricket, we can beat anybody. It's important we execute our plans as best as we can," he said.&nbsp;

There was just one change in New Zealand's playing XI with Mitchell Santner coming in for Colin de Grandhomme.&nbsp;

Williamson added that spin had been effective through the series and that the Bay Oval pitch will help spinners.&nbsp;

While Indian captain Virat Kohli, who look to seal the five-match series said, "This pitch will get slower and slower but under the lights, we felt the ball came on better, we won't mind bowling first."

India will enter the stadium with two changes in the playing XI, MS Dhoni has a sore hamstring so he has been replaced by Dinesh Karthik.&nbsp;

India have thrust recalled all-rounder Hardik Pandya as he replaced Vijay Shankar.&nbsp;

Pandya was sent home when from Australia earlier this month following allegedly sexist remarks made on a television chat show.&nbsp;

But he was rushed to New Zealand to rejoin the side after the suspension was lifted last Thursday.

"He brings great balance to the team. He can give you 5-6 overs and also play the big shots as well. It's brilliant, especially if you look at our away performances," said Virat on Pandya's addition.&nbsp;

Playing XI:

India: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli(c), Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik(w), Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal.

News brief: Big stories of the day

India captain Virat Kohli on Monday hoped all-rounder Hardik Pandya will come out a "better cricketer" and scale new heights after making a promising return from the suspension that followed his sexist remarks on a TV show.&nbsp;

Pandya, who is still facing an inquiry for his loose talk on women, did not get to bat in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/india-beat-new-zealand-in-3rd-odi-seal-series-193428">third ODI against New Zealand</a> here Monday but the 25-year-old bowled and fielded with purpose, taking two crucial wickets and a brilliant catch to send back home skipper Kane Williamson.

Kohli, after having condemned the comments made by Pandya and K L Rahul on the chat show, on Monday <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/good-to-have-hardik-pandya-back-provides-balance-to-team-says-kohli-after-3rd-odi-win-193452">reserved words of encouragement for the all-rounder.</a>&nbsp;

"In life, there are only two ways to deal with a situation like that. Either you hit rock bottom or you can learn from the situation and see it as a motivation to make things right," said Kohli after leading India to a series-sealing seven-wicket win over the Black Caps.

"For a cricketer, there is nothing more dear than game. You put all your energy in the game, if you respect the game, the game will respect you back. There is no rocket science."

The Indian skipper said Pandya showed the required intensity in his comeback game and is already on the road to redemption.&nbsp;

"You don't need do anything extra (in a situation like Pandya's). Whoever comes out of it positive, his career can scale new heights, like we have seen with many cricketers in the past.&nbsp;

"I hope he goes on that right path and emerges as a better cricketer and I think he can do that,"said Kohli.

Pandya was sent back home from Australia earlier this month after BCCI suspended him and Rahul pending an inquiry.&nbsp;

It seemed that he would also miss the entire tour of New Zealand but the Committee of Administrators (CoA) revoked their interim suspension last week and now their fate will be decided by an Ombudsman who is yet to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

Kohli said any team in the world would love to have Pandya.&nbsp;

"It is very very good to have him. He provides balance to the team. The way he bowled today showed that he went back and was practising his skills. You can tell with his intensity, he picked up two crucial wickets as well.&nbsp;

"He is someone who will give you those important contributions in all three departments. The team also looks much more balanced with him around. He is in a good head space and I hope he can continue with that," added Kohli.&nbsp;

Indian cricket team's New Zealand tour has appeared to be a one-way contest. The spin attack in skipper Virat Kohli’s arsenal has made the Kiwis batting line-up appear feeble and weak. As the two teams meet again for the third ODI on Monday, the men in blue will look to seal the series, already having a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

The third ODI is also likely to see the return of Hardik Pandya, who was suspended along with KL Rahul for his controversial remarks. The all-rounder's return will ensure balance in the ODI side, something even Kohli has admitted time and again.&nbsp;

His replacement Vijay Shankar, who was only given two overs in the second ODI, did not create the impact and Pandya, at No. 6, could prove useful in the batting department as well.

New Zealand will look to find the solution to the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who accounted for 12 of the 20 wickets in the first two ODIs.&nbsp;

While Kuldeep claimed two four-wicket hauls, Chahal returned with two wickets in both the matches. Seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami have also contributed well in New Zealand’s demolition.

Meanwhile, in the batting department, India have benefitted with the return of Shikhar Dhawan to form. He scored an unbeaten 75 in the first ODI before making 67-ball 66 in the second game. Vice-captain Rohit Sharma made up for a poor show in the first ODI by bringing up his 14th century stand with Dhawan.

For the Black Caps, none of the other batters could convert their starts except captain Kane Williamson had top-scored in the first ODI with his 36th half-century, and all-rounder Doug Bracewell made a 46-ball 57.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to join India's touring squad in New Zealand after his suspension over sexist comments on a TV show was <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/provisional-suspensions-on-hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-revoked-by-coa-192520">lifted by the country's cricket board</a>.

Pandya talked about his encounters with multiple women in a chat show earlier this month as teammate KL&nbsp;Rahul sat next to him, prompting uproar on social media that led to the duo being suspended pending an inquiry.

The Committee of Administrators (CoA), after consulting new amicus curiae PS Narsimha, decided to lift the suspension pending an inquiry, for which an ombudsman is to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

The apex court has listed the matter tentatively for February 5.&nbsp;

"The above matter and decision has been taken with the concurrence of the Learned Amicus Curiae, Mr PS Narasimha. In view of the above, the suspension orders dated 11.01.2019 is immediately lifted pending appointment and adjudication of the allegations by the BCCI Ombudsman," read a statement of CoA, issued by the BCCI.&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Thursday allowed Pandya to participate in the ongoing one-day international series in New Zealand and Rahul to join the India A squad in Thiruvananthapuram.&nbsp;

"Hardik Pandya will be sent to New Zealand to join the team at the earliest and K.L. Rahul will join India A squad to play the last three one-day games against England Lions," the BCCI said in a news release.

The final call on the duo's fate will be taken by an ombudsman whose appointment has been stuck in a legal wrangle.

Virat Kohli's India lead the five-match series against the Kiwis after their opening win in Napier and will face the hosts on Saturday in the second match.

The tourists will also play three Twenty20 internationals in New Zealand.

In what many will call Karan Johar’s late realisation, the filmmaker has now apologised for the controversial ‘Koffee With Karan’ episode starring cricketers Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Karan admitted that the conversation “may have crossed boundaries” as he spoke of feeling “responsible”.&nbsp;

He told ET Now in an interview, "I'm not justifying the conversation that happened on the episode. I'm saying that perhaps things were said that may have crossed boundaries and I apologise because it was my platform where it happened."

Karan Johar apologises for Hardik Pandya's 'Koffee With Karan' episode: I feel responsible as it was my show

India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday stressed on the importance of all-rounder Hardik Pandya's presence in the ODI side in order to get the ideal bowling combination for the World Cup.

Pandya has been suspended pending inquiry after his sexist comments on a TV chat show and already the Indian team have had issues with their third specialist pacer ahead of the five-match ODI against New Zealand starting Wednesday.

Rookies Khaleel Ahmed and Mohammed Siraj both got a fair amount of stick against Australia in the first two ODIs before Hardik's replacement Vijay Shankar bowled a steady spell of six overs in the series decider in Melbourne.

When asked if there can be an ideal bowling combination, the skipper said: "Depends on the all-rounder to be honest. If you see the strongest sides in the world, they have two all-rounders at the least, some sides have three, so that gives you a lot of bowling options."

For Kohli, a third fast bowler is an option only when a specialist all-rounder is unavailable.

"Only if someone like a Vijay Shankar or a Hardik doesn't play, then (only) three fast bowlers makes sense. Because if an all-rounder can chip in with a few overs of seam up, then you don't necessarily need a guy bowling 140kmph as the third bowler along with the two fast bowlers," Kohli said ahead of the first ODI at McLean Park.

Kohli, in a very subtle yet strong manner, put across his point about Hardik's absence from the side.

"So whether it's me backing three bowlers or during Asia Cup, every time it happened when Hardik wasn't available. We have had to play three fast bowlers. So every time, the all-rounder is there, you are not thinking about a third fast bowler unless you are playing in conditions which are totally against spin bowling," the skipper said.

While winning the series is important, the Indian captain made it clear that he would like to remain flexible about team combination keeping the World Cup in mind.

"Look winning is always going to be a very important factor but the main thing is not to be desperate at this stage. There needs to be a good atmosphere in the change room, there needs to be calmness and collective effort towards just refining ourselves as a team approaching the World Cup."

Kohli indicated that a few players could be tried here and there, raising hopes of young Shubman Gill getting an opportunity during the series.

"Also to try a few players here and there and see how they react to different situations or different positions in the team. We are open to doing that as well.&nbsp;

"You don't want to be too rigid because you want to be flexible in your mind and in your preparation to be able to competitive during a big tournament like the World Cup," the skipper explained.

"I think we need a good balance of both even if we back a few players to play at some stage, the idea is still to win the games and not just think of it as an experiment," he set priorities right.

New Zealand grounds presents a different challenge for bowlers with the boundaries on the shorter side.

"You have to aware of side boundaries being really short in most of the grounds, so targeting the right areas of the ground becomes very important but I think bowlers require more composure here in terms of which are the shots that batsmen want to play, so you have the best chance of getting them out or restricting boundaries," the skipper observed.

The current batting group is much more experienced compared to the one in 2014, said the skipper.

"Well we have seen a lot of things that happened from the last series (2014) that we played here, like what were patterns and how the guys were trying to get us out last time, we were probably not an experienced a side back then in terms of batting group," he stated.

"The key is not to panic too much in the field, when you see 300 being posted regularly as you have to back yourself as batting group to get those runs or set a big target when batting first, which I believe when we played last time, we didn't have the composure," he reasoned.&nbsp;

IND vs NZ: Hardik Pandya's absence forces us into playing three seamers, says Virat Kohli

When the outspoken Sreesanth says Karan Johar should also take the blame for the disastrous aftermath of Hardik Pandya's declarations on Koffee With Karan he is not off the mark.

Fact is, the channel is "extremely concerned" about its image after Pandya's misogyny was outed. And if sources are to be believed, axing the show has also been contemplated. But we now hear there would be no such grave ramifications, only an apology on the show for the careless and insensitive man-talk.

But a more far-reaching repercussion awaits the show as the guests would have to watch their mouth. And if they shoot it off nevertheless, Karan Johar would have to ensure the smut sleaze and innuendos are kept out of range.

Fact is, the show's underlining mood of sexiness was simmering to a boil for some time now. Both the men and the women celebrities were being asked what would be termed as improper questions and it was considered okay since, "Karan is like that only," as one of his indulgent female star guests told me.

Crossing the line comes naturally on "Koffee With Karan". It comes with the territory. The show is an extension of Karan Johar's personality. Everyone loves Karan, even if he is a little leery. No one minds if he asks what would be considered improper in other circumstances. He is a part of the super-privileged elite of Bollywood who have access to everyone who counts. And that makes him more powerful than almost anyone else in Bollywood.

Karan's own love life is zilch. But he is a love guru to many of the biggest actors and actresses. Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor are some of the stars who lean on Karan for heart-related advice. Karan has solved more love tangles than Mike Myers in Love Guru.

I once asked him about his status as Bollywood's resident love consultant and said, "I don't have a love life of my own. So I invest all my unused energy in others' love life."

This was long before the twin towers of his existence. His children, Roohi and Yash, have given him a reason to come home quickly after work. And Karan, who made sure he makes his presence felt at every happening-do in Mumbai, is no longer that wild a party animal. He would rather have dudhoo with his babies than Koffee with the stars.&nbsp;

If for no other reason, he should now curb his naughty instincts for the sake of his children. Would Karan like his son Yash on the sofa one day talking the way Hardik was heard talking?

Maybe he would. But then the normal lines of decorum are not sketched for Karan. This unsavoury incident has taught him not to look for a mischievous pun in the name 'Hardik'.

It's time to stop playing the field.

Karan Johar is as much to blame for Hardik Pandya-KL Rahul controversy

BCCI acting President CK Khanna Saturday urged the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to lift the suspension on Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul for their much-criticised sexist remarks and refused to convene a Special General Meeting on the matter.

Khanna said calling the SGM to appoint an ombudsman to investigate the two players' conduct, as demanded by Board officials, wouldn't be right as the Supreme Court is due to take up the issue next week.

Pandya and Rahul have been suspended pending an inquiry for their sexist comments on a TV chat show.

"They made a mistake, and they have already been suspended and called back from the series against Australia. They have also submitted an unconditional apology,"

Khanna write in a letter to the Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the BCCI.

"I suggest that pending inquiry we reinstate both the cricketers into the Indian squad immediately and allow them to join the team in New Zealand at the earliest," he added.

The CoA wants the Supreme Court to appoint an ombudsman to decide the fate of the two players, who have already missed the ODI series against Australia and are set to sit out of the tour of New Zealand as well.&nbsp;

They have also been thoroughly lambasted for their comments on hooking up with multiple women and joking about it on the show.

Around 14 state units, mainly former BCCI president N Srinivasan's loalists, had requested Khanna to convene an emergent SGM, which needs to be called in 10 days.

BCCI Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry also wrote to Khanna requesting for an early SGM, so that board members can take a call on the appointment of ombudsman.

"As per constitution of the BCCI, an ombudsman can be appointed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). And moreover the matter (appointment of ombudsman) is already sub-judice," Khanna replied to Chaudhry.

Khanna also sought BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary's view.

"Why would Khanna or Amitabh sign the notice for convening Special General Meeting when the matter is in Supreme Court. There would be a risk of Contempt of Court," a senior BCCI official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

However, the official agreed that CoA chief Vinod Rai should have vetoed co-member Diana Edulji's demand for provisional suspension and taken a call on quantum of suspension for the two suspended cricketers.

"As per protocol, Mr Rai sought Diana's suggestion but he could easily overrule her view of getting a legal opinion, which started this mess. He (Rai) could have easily done what he did in the women's coach selection case," the official observed.

The acting president urged the CoA and BCCI office-bearers to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

"What Mr. Hardik Pandya said and Mr. K.L. Rahul acted as a by-stander to is inappropriate and absolutely wrong, but in my personal opinion, to treat them like lawbreakers is wrong too," he wrote.

"Both these cricketers need game time before the World Cup which starts in four months time. We should give these growing cricketers chance to correct themselves morally," he signed off.&nbsp;

"Both these cricketers need game time before the World Cup which starts in four months time. We should give these growing cricketers chance to correct themselves morally," he signed off.

Let Pandya, Rahul play while inquiry is on: BCCI president urges CoA

The Supreme Court Thursday took note of a plea of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) seeking urgent appointment of an ombudsman in the BCCI to decide on the fate of Team India members Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, who have been <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">suspended pending inquiry</a> over their "insensitive" remarks against women.&nbsp;

Senior advocate Parag Tripathi, appearing for the CoA, said that the court should direct appointment of ombudsman in the BCCI urgently as the fate of two young promising cricketers needs to be decided immediately.&nbsp;

CoA asks SC to appoint ombudsman to decide fate of Pandya, Rahul

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly Thursday said "we should move on" from the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya</a> and KL Rahul's sexist comments because he is sure the two will learn from it and become better persons.&nbsp;

Speaking at an event here, Ganguly said he hasn't seen the 'Koffee with Karan' episode in which Pandya and Rahul's misogynistic comments on women led to a provisional suspension on them. But he offered a sympathetic view on the under-fire duo.&nbsp;

"People make mistakes, let's not go too far here. I am sure, whoever has done it will realise and come out a better person. We are human beings not machines that we will always be perfect. We should move on and make sure it doesn't happen again," Ganguly said on the raging controversy.&nbsp;

Pandya and Rahul were forced to return midway through the ongoing ODI series against Australia and India captain Virat Kohli condemned their statements on hookups with multiple women as "inappropriate".&nbsp;

They have been show caused twice by the BCCI since then and are also being put through an inquiry.

Ganguly said most cricketers are "great guys".

"...They (cricketers) are humble, every now and then one or two make mistakes but I know most of them personally and they are great guys," Ganguly said during the trailer launch of '22 Yards' at a suburb.&nbsp;

Pandya and Rahul, pending the outcome of the inquiry, will not be a part of the Indian team. After missing the ongoing ODI series, they are set to miss the upcoming New Zealand Tour as well.&nbsp;

Ganguly, who has been credited with shaping Indian cricket during his captaincy stint, said it's not that modern-day cricketers are not obedient.&nbsp;

"Look at Virat Kohli, he is such a fantastic role model. India is a fortunate country, every generation produces players who all of us cherish, there was (Sunil) Gavaskar, then came (Sachin) Tendulkar, when Tendulkar finished people thought who's next, now it's Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

"A lot of these cricketers are fantastic human beings because they come from middle-class backgrounds and fight their way up. Can you imagine 11 selected out of the millions play the game."

Hardik Pandya loses Mumbai's Khar Gymkhana membership over his sexist comments on TV show

Appealing that another chance be given to Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, who have drawn flak for their outrage-evoking comments on women during a chat show, renowned umpire Simon Taufel Monday said&nbsp;that "we all make mistakes".&nbsp;

Pandya, 25, and Rahul, 26, have been <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-out-from-1st-odi-amid-recommendation-of-suspension-189599">suspended by the BCCI</a> and sent home from the tour of Australia following their sexist remarks in popular celebrity talk show 'Koffee with Karan', which is hosted by Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar.

"Look what I would say in every team and in every business and every sport, is that good people make a good team. And that we all make mistakes from time to time. We all learn as we go," Taufel, 47, told reporters on the sidelines of a local cricket tournament where he was the chief guest.

"Although I didn't see the show, I have read little bit about some of the complaints. I have made plenty of mistakes in my career and I have learnt along the way.

In the show, they spoke about hookups with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents.

"These players may have made some mistakes with some of the things that they have said. But they too will learn and all the other players and all the other people that have seen this event will also learn," he said.

Taufel added that they have their careers lying ahead and remained hopeful they will come out of the incident as better persons.

"I think we really need to be careful about being overly critical. People do make mistakes but if we learn from that and we are genuine about wanting to do better, and commit to doing better then that's a good thing.

"These players have got their careers to get through like you make a mistake in the first ball but you still got the day to get through. And I am sure they have got some good people around them and some good advice.

"I am sure they will come out of this okay and they will get through it. If they are genuine and they learn from that, I think they will become better as a result."

Taufel, who recently gave a keynote lecture at the Institute of Technology Bombay's (IIT-B) Techfest in Mumbai, stressed on the importance of education.

"It's important that we invest in training and we invest in education. Because it is about the person as much as it is about the player. And it's a real challenge in modern sport where players are thrust into environments and opportunities that they have never seen before.

"And the amount the scrutiny that cricketers and umpires are on to these days, its huge.

"My work going forward with a lot of businesses and lot of sporting organisations and a lot of people is about how do we prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead."

Taufel lavished praise on Virat Kohli, singling out an innings in the 2012 CB series against Sri Lanka in Hobart, where the Indian captain made an unbeaten 133.

"Every shot in the innings was in the middle of the bat. He was almost faultless," Taufel said.

Taufel added that Kohli has now found out how to bring the best out of him and he is comfortable in being who he is.

"Virat's now finding or has found what it takes to be a good leader. He grew up idolising Sachin Tendulkar and under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

"They have had a huge impact on his career. But Virat Kohli is his own man. He has found out what it takes to be the best Virat Kohli he can be," he concluded.

Give Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul another chance, appeals umpire Simon Taufel

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-out-from-1st-odi-amid-recommendation-of-suspension-189599">Suspended cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul</a> Monday tendered "unconditional" apologies for their sexist comments during a TV chat show amid CoA chief Vinod Rai saying that the BCCI should correct the two players, not end their careers.&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, despite the apologies tendered by the duo, 10 BCCI units demanded a Special General Meeting to appoint an ombudsman for carrying out an inquiry. Rai's fellow Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji wants an inquiry done by CoA and the BCCI office-bearers.

"Yes, Hardik and Rahul have submitted their reply to the fresh showcause notices that were served to them. They have tendered unconditional apology.

The CoA chief has instructed the CEO to conduct an inquiry as per clause 41 (c) of the new BCCI constitution," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Brought back midway from the tour of Australia, Pandya and Rahul's immediate fate hangs in balance with the World Cup less than four months away.

Rai, in an e-mail to Edulji, said that the "BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers".

"Please be assured that the desire to conduct the inquiry is not a desire to 'cover up'. The interest of cricket in India has to be kept in mind. The off the ground act of the players was deplorable. It was crass as I said immediately after reading the comments," Rai wrote.&nbsp;

"It is our responsibility to reprimand them, take corrective action, sensitise them of their misdemeanour and then get them back on to the ground once they have suffered the consequences," he said.

The former CAG stated in his mail that players have been "shamed" after being recalled from an international tour, the ongoing ODI series against Australia, and principles of natural justice demand that they be heard.

"We have shamed them by recalling them from an ongoing tour. We have suspended them from further games. We need to correct them and not bring their career to a cul de sac by indefinitely delaying a decision. These misdemeanours require swift action, with a corrective approach," he added.&nbsp;

The road to redemption for the duo could prove to be tricky. Rai has instructed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to carry out a preliminary inquiry but Board members along with Edulji want otherwise.

Rai justified Johri intitiating the probe, citing the BCCI constitution. Edulji feels Johri, because of past allegations of sexual harassment against him, should not be entrusted with the task.&nbsp;

"The CEO must fulfil his duty as per Rule 41(C) and conduct the inquiry after receiving the explanation of the players. He must ensure that the norms of natural justice are fulfilled," Raid said.&nbsp;

The e-mail also states that a request has been made to the Supreme Court to appoint an Ombudsman for the case, on the advice of the legal team.

"During the 17th (January) hearing, we request the hon Court to appoint an Ombudsman. However, in the unlikely event of the Hon. Court not being able to appoint the Ombudsman in the hearing scheduled for the 17th January 2019, we must go ahead and appoint an ad-hoc ombudsman as per legal advice received by us.&nbsp;

"The Ombudsman, so appointed, can take a final view on the players based on the inquiry report submitted by the CEO," he wrote.
In another development, acting president CK Khanna received requisitions from 10 state units demanding a Special General Meeting at the earliest.

As per the new constitution, the secretary -- in this case the acting secretary -- can call an SGM on 21 days' notice but if it has to be an Emergent SGM within 10 days, the board president (acting president) in this case has to convene the meeting.

"It will be interesting what call Khanna will take. If I remember, he once didn't sign the minutes of SGM fearing that it would be in violation of Supreme

Court orders. On another occasion, he didn't even attend an SGM," a state unit member, who was present during both the meetings, said.

"There is a possibility that Khanna may instruct Amitabh Chaudhary to call a normal SGM with 21 days' notice which a secretary is allowed to," he added.&nbsp;

The e-mail also states that a request has been made to the Supreme Court to appoint an Ombudsman for the case, on the advice of the legal team. "During the 17th (January) hearing, we request the hon Court to appoint an Ombudsman. However, in the unlikely event of the Hon. Court not being able to appoint the Ombudsman in the hearing scheduled for the 17th January 2019, we must go ahead and appoint an ad-hoc ombudsman as per legal advice received by us. If I remember, he once didn't sign the minutes of SGM fearing that it would be in violation of Supreme Court orders. On another occasion, he didn't even attend an SGM," a state unit member, who was present during both the meetings, said. "There is a possibility that Khanna may instruct Amitabh Chaudhary to call a normal SGM with 21 days' notice which a secretary is allowed to," he added.

Esha Gupta on Hardik Pandya after sexist comments: 'Who told you he is my friend?'

Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji Friday recommended "suspension till further action" against India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul after the BCCI legal team refused to declare their<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173"> outrage-evoking comments on women</a> a violation of the code of conduct.&nbsp;

Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after CoA chief Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same.&nbsp;

"It is imperative that players be put under suspension till further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in case of (BCCI) CEO (Rahul Johri) when he was sent on leave on sexual harassment matter," read Edulji's response to the legal opinion which is in possession of PTI.&nbsp;

"Based on legal opinion and final procedure is laid down to address this issue, will recommend that a communication is sent to concerned players and team immediately," Edulji wrote in response to recommendations from the Board's legal firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.&nbsp;

The legal firm made it clear that the cringe-worthy comments made by Pandya do not fall under the Code of Conduct ambit.&nbsp;

The copy of the legal opinion, in possession of PTI, states: "We feel that present matter doesn't fall under the ambit of Code of Conduct and procedure of Code of Conduct can't be invoked in present circumstances."&nbsp;

The firm said the behaviour in question was neither a criticism of any match or against a player or support staff or match official.&nbsp;

"In any case the procedure set by the BCCI constitution will have primacy over procedure set out under Code of Conduct," it said.&nbsp;

A senior BCCI official seconded Edulji's view and said that there should be suspension pending inquiry.&nbsp;

"It's not just about Code of Conduct but about bringing the institution to disrepute. Just understand that ICC had given maximum sanction of one Test ban to Steve Smith for ball tampering charges as per its code of conduct," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"But Cricket Australia banned them for one year for the disrepute they brought to the game. When you look at their crass comments, look at the larger picture," he added.&nbsp;

If they are suspended pending inquiry, the legal team has recommended the appointment of an ad hoc Ombudsman, which could well mean more trouble for the duo.&nbsp;

With skipper Virat Kohli also distancing himself from the comments, it will now depend on the decision taken by the warring duo of Rai and Edulji based on this legal opinion.

CoA recommends 'suspension pending inquiry' against Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul

Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul will be sent home on the first available flight from Australia as the BCCI suspended them Friday for their outrage-evoking comments on women, hours after the duo's on-field leader Virat Kohli expressed his disapproval.

The under-fire players have been suspended pending an inquiry into their sexist comments on a TV show, ruling them out of the three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning Saturday in Sydney.

"Both Pandya and Rahul have been suspended pending an inquiry," the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai told PTI.

A few hours later it was confirmed that a decision has been taken to send them home from Australia.

"It's confirmed. The duo is being sent back. If they can book tickets then tomorrow they will be leaving (for India) or latest by day after," a senior BCCI official said.

He added that at this point their chances of making the squad for the New Zealand tour is also "bleak".

The suspension letter, as per clause 41 (6) of BCCI, states: "CoA suspends Pandya, Rahul from participating in 'any match or function or event or activity that is authorized, organized, sanctioned, recognized or supported in any way by the BCCI, the ICC or any State Association, until final adjudication of the matter'."

The 'Koffee with Karan' episode featuring the cricketers has since been taken down by the channel's online platform.

On the show, Pandya had boasted about hooking up with multiple women and being open about it with his parents. Rahul was, however, a shade more restrained in his responses on relationships and women.

A source in the BCCI said the two will be issued fresh show-cause notices before a formal enquiry begins.

"Whether it will be an internal committee of the BCCI or an ad hoc ombudsman who will conduct an inquiry, is yet to be ascertained," the official said.

Pandya has regretted his comments twice since the show went on air on Sunday -- first on his official Twitter page and then in response to the BCCI show cause notice on Wednesday.

Rahul, on the other hand, is yet to react to the controversy.

The decision to hand them suspensions came after Rai's CoA colleague Diana Edulji recommended the same till further action against the two. This was after the BCCI's legal team refused to declare the comments a violation of the code of conduct.&nbsp;

In Sydney, on the eve of the ODI series, captain Kohli condemned the two for what he termed "inappropriate" comments but said he was not too stressed about the possibility of a ban on the all-rounder.

"...It's good that we have someone like (Ravindra) Jadeja who can do the all-rounder's role if a scenario like that occurs," Kohli said.
Days after their historic maiden Test series triumph, Kohli asserted that the side does not stand by the "individual opinions", which have triggered a social media storm.

The likes of Rishabh Pant and Manish Pandey will now be in contention to be their replacements. While Pandya was a certainty in the playing XI, an out-of-form Rahul was not in contention to play on Saturday.

It is speculated that the BCCI might bar players from appearing on entertainment shows owing to the ongoing furore.

Suspended Pandya, Rahul to be sent home; Kohli condemns comments

Indian captain Virat Kohli said today that he is <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/how-hardik-pandya-got-carried-away-comments-that-led-to-storm-and-show-cause-189240">waiting on the&nbsp;decision by the BCCI </a>on Hardik Pandya's match ban after the cricketer made inappropriate remarks in a TV show recently leading to a showcause notice being sent to him and cricketer KL Rahul who also appeared on the weekly TV show.

"We as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers don't align with those views, those were individual opinions. We are still waiting for a decision to be made, Indian captain Virat Kohli said ahead of the first one-day international against Australia at Sydney.

While appearing as a guest for a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">TV show Koffee with Karan, Pandya</a> made derogatory comments against women in which he said: ""When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, "Main karke aaya hai aaj (I did it today)."

When Johar asked Pandya why he didn't ask women's name at nightclubs?", Pandya replied that he didn't remember their names, instead, he added that "I like to watch and observe how they move. I'm little from the Black side so I need to see how they move."

The Committee of Administrators(CoA) chief Vinod Rai recommended a two-ODI ban on India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul for their controversial comments. On the show, Pandya boasted about hooking up with multiple women and also how open he has been about it with his parents.

"Diana has sought legal opinion whether the duo can be banned. So, obviously, a decision will be taken once she gives her nod. As far as I am concerned, the comments were crass, in bad taste and unacceptable," Rai said.&nbsp;

Indian captain Virat Kohli said today that he is waiting on the decision by the BCCI on Hardik Pandya's match ban after the cricketer made inappropriate remarks in a TV show recently leading to a showcause notice being sent to him and cricketer KL Rahul who also appeared on the weekly TV show. "We as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers don't align with those views, those were individual opinions. We are still waiting for a decision to be made, Indian captain Virat Kohli said ahead of the first one-day international against Australia at Sydney. While appearing as a guest for a TV show Koffee with Karan, Pandya made derogatory comments against women in which he said: ""When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, "Main karke aaya hai aaj (I did it today)." When Johar asked Pandya why he didn't ask women's name at nightclubs?", Pandya replied that he didn't remember their names, instead, he added that "I like to watch and observe how they move. I'm little from the Black side so I need to see how they move." The Committee of Administrators(CoA) chief Vinod Rai recommended a two-ODI ban on India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul for their controversial comments. On the show, Pandya boasted about hooking up with multiple women and also how open he has been about it with his parents. "Diana has sought legal opinion whether the duo can be banned. So, obviously, a decision will be taken once she gives her nod. As far as I am concerned, the comments were crass, in bad taste and unacceptable," Rai said. "From the Indian cricket team's point of view, this changes nothing in our beliefs in the change room, it does nothing to the spirit we have have been able to create. Combinations will have to be thought of once the decision comes out," Kohli said even as Indian team gets set to take on Australia on Saturday in the 3-match one-day series. Ahead of first ODI, Kohli says waiting for BCCI to decide on Hardik Pandya's fate

Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine-tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning here on Saturday.&nbsp;

On the eve of the opening game, the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-sends-suspension-notes-to-hardik-pandya-over-misconduct-and-indiscipline-189663">BCCI suspended Hardik Pandya</a> and KL Rahul pending an inquiry for their inappropriate remarks on women during a TV show, effectively ruling them out of the series.&nbsp;

While Pandya was a certainty in the playing XI, an out-of-form Rahul was not in contention to play on Saturday.&nbsp;

Skipper Virat Kohli on Friday condemned the comments made by his two teammates and said the team does not align with the "individual opinions".&nbsp;

"The two concerned players (have) felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what's happened," he said in the pre-match press conference.&nbsp;

Rahul was unlikely to get a go owing to both his poor form and the presence of a well-settled opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. More significant is Pandya's absence as the all-rounder provides crucial balance to the ODI side with his ability to bowl 10 overs as well as bat in the middle order.&nbsp;

Pandya's absence means that India will have to rejig their attack. Jasprit Bumrah has already been rested for this series, as well as the tour of New Zealand, and this allows the think-tank to conduct one final experimentation with their bowling attack.&nbsp;

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a shoe-in, and thereafter it depends if Kohli wants to go in with a three-man pace attack to compensate for Pandya's loss.&nbsp;

In such a scenario, Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed are expected to get the nod, as India continue zeroing on the pace quartet for the World Cup squad. There is a sprinkling of grass on the SCG pitch and it could push the Indian skipper to opt for a three-pacer and two-spinner combination.&nbsp;

Kohli also stated that, in Pandya's absence, Ravindra Jadeja would step up as the all-rounder. He would partner up with left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as India's five-pronged attack, with Kedar Jadhav fulfilling any part-time bowling duties if needed.&nbsp;

With the two openers, and Kohli at number three, the remaining batting line-up picks itself. Jadhav, MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu will form the middle order, and there will be keen interest in the latter duo's form here.&nbsp;

Dhoni had an off-colour 2018, managing 275 runs in 20 ODIs at average 25 without a half-century. While this is a meagre return for a batsman of his stature, the worrying aspect is Dhoni's strike-rate of 71.42, which is remarkably lower than his ODI career strike-rate of 87.89.&nbsp;&nbsp;

India brought in Rayudu for the all-important number four role, and since the Asia Cup last September, have given him a long run in the middle order. In this interim, Rayudu scored 392 runs in 11 ODIs in the Asia Cup and against West Indies at average 56 including a hundred and three half-centuries.&nbsp;

While he put in a more consistent showing than any of the other previously tried contenders, this run came in conditions different from those in England.

As such, how Rayudu fares on this twin tour of Australia and New Zealand will be a closer representation of whether the Indian team has finally cracked the number four quandary.&nbsp;

Similar middle-order issues plagued the visitors when they last toured here for an ODI contest, losing 4-1 in January 2016 when Dhoni was still captain. Sharma and Kohli topped the charts with 441 and 381 runs in the five-match series, respectively, while Dhawan also scored 287 runs.&nbsp;

But there were no sizeable contributions from the middle, and only Manish Pandey's fighting hundred in the final ODI had saved India from a 5-0 scoreline.&nbsp;

India's ODI record in Australia is quite poor. Apart from the 1985 World Championship and 2008 CB Series wins, they have lost 35 out of 48 ODIs played against Australia on their home soil.&nbsp;

The absence of David Warner (220 runs in three matches in 2016) and Steve Smith (315 runs in five matches in 2016) might help them again though, as also the absence of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, with the trio rested from this series.&nbsp;

Australia have named their playing eleven ahead of the first ODI, with Nathan Lyon featuring as the lone spinner and Peter Siddle returning to this format for the first time since 2010. Keeper-batsman Alex Carey will open in ODI cricket for the first time, and will pair up with skipper Aaron Finch, while Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb will form the middle order.&nbsp;

The hosts bat deep with Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell lined up at numbers six and seven, albeit their pace attack seems weak on paper. With Siddle returning to the format after eight years, left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff will make his ODI debut on Saturday.&nbsp;

BCCI sends suspension note to Hardik Pandya over sexist remarks made on TV show

Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul were Friday suspended pending an inquiry into their <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">comments on women</a> during a TV show, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai told PTI.&nbsp;

Amid controversy, Star's OTT platform removes Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul's 'Koffee With Karan' episode

India skipper Virat Kohli has said that the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-issues-showcause-notice-against-hardik-pandya-k-l-rahul-for-comments-on-women-in-tv-show-189173">sexist comments</a> made by his teammates KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya are "inappropriate" from Indian cricket team's the point of view.&nbsp;

He further added, "we definitely, as the Indian cricket team, do not support views like that and that has been communicated."&nbsp;

Team India scripted history in the recently concluded Test series after clinching the series for the first time on Australian soil.&nbsp;

But ahead of the one-day series, India have been hit by an unsavoury off-field controversy due to Pandya and KL Rahul's controversial comments on women on a TV show. The two are facing the prospect of being banned for a couple of matches.&nbsp;

"The two concerned players felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude," Kohli told reporters.

Virat Kohli said he was not aware of any sanctions being handed down but as per the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/coa-recommends-suspension-pending-inquiry-against-hardik-pandya-kl-rahul-189549">latest reports</a>, Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji Friday recommended "suspension till further action" against both the players. Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after CoA chief Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same.&nbsp;

"From the combination and team balance point of view, yes, you'll have to think about the combination you'll need now," Kohli said.

"We played in India against the West Indies with a finger spinner and a wrist spinner. So it's good that we have someone like Jadeja who can do the all-rounder's role if a scenario like that occurs," Kohli said on the eve of the first ODI against Australia.&nbsp;

"So we are not too stressed as a team (about the Pandya situation) because you'll always have things that you can do in terms of creating that balance for the side. And hence, we keep players who can provide balance with bat and ball as a backup anyway," he added.&nbsp;

"I don't think we will have too much of trouble if we have to change our combinations. We are pretty comfortable as a side and any combination that we go in with," he said.&nbsp;

India skipper Virat Kohli has said that the sexist comments made by his teammates KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya are "inappropriate" from Indian cricket team's the point of view. He further added, "we definitely, as the Indian cricket team, do not support views like that and that has been communicated." Team India scripted history in the recently concluded Test series after clinching the series for the first time on Australian soil. But ahead of the one-day series, India have been hit by an unsavoury off-field controversy due to Pandya and KL Rahul's controversial comments on women on a TV show. The two are facing the prospect of being banned for a couple of matches. "The two concerned players felt what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude," Kohli told reporters. Virat Kohli said he was not aware of any sanctions being handed down but as per the latest reports, Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji Friday recommended "suspension till further action" against both the players. Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after CoA chief Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same. "We played in India against the West Indies with a finger spinner and a wrist spinner. So it's good that we have someone like Jadeja who can do the all-rounder's role if a scenario like that occurs," Kohli said on the eve of the first ODI against Australia. "So we are not too stressed as a team (about the Pandya situation) because you'll always have things that you can do in terms of creating that balance for the side. And hence, we keep players who can provide balance with bat and ball as a backup anyway," he added. "I don't think we will have too much of trouble if we have to change our combinations. We are pretty comfortable as a side and any combination that we go in with," he said. (With inputs from agencies)
