Denmark has responded sharply to US Vice President JD Vance after he accused Copenhagen of neglecting Greenland. His comments, made during a visit to the Pituffik Space Base in north-west Greenland, were seen by both Denmark and Greenland’s capital Nuuk as provocative.

What did JD Vance say?

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Vance stated, “Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.”

“I think Greenland understands that the United States should own it. And if Denmark and the EU don’t understand it, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,” Vance said.
When asked about whether force might be used, Vance replied that he didn’t think it would be necessary. “We think this makes sense, and because we think the people of Greenland are rational and good, we think we’re going to be able to cut a deal, Donald Trump-style, to ensure the security of this territory but also the United States of America.”

How did Denmark react?

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen took to social media on Saturday to voice his disapproval. “We are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it’s being delivered,” he wrote on X.

“This is not how you speak to your close allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies,” he added.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s incoming prime minister, urged solidarity. “It is very important that we put aside our disagreements and differences … because only in this way will we be able to cope with the heavy pressure we are exposed to from outside,” he said.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also responded to Vance’s statements. “For many years, we have stood by the Americans in very difficult situations,” she said, referencing Denmark’s military involvement alongside the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The vice president’s reference to Denmark is not accurate,” she added.

'This is not how you speak': Denmark slams JD Vance after US VP says US should ‘own’ Greenland

US Vice President JD Vance has expressed confidence in striking a deal over Greenland without the use of force, emphasizing a "Trump-style" negotiation approach. He has criticized Denmark for failing to ensure Greenland’s security and reiterated that any agreement will prioritize stability in the region. Stay tuned for updates on this developing geopolitical move.

US Vice President JD Vance eyes Greenland deal for security, stability

US Vice President JD Vance paid a visit on Friday (28 March) to the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, making him the first American vice president to travel to the Danish territory. He was joined by his wife, Usha, and senior US officials.
Vance opened his address by thanking the troops for giving him a "warm reception in a very, very cold place." He said he carried a message from President Donald Trump, who is "thankful for your service" and "proud of you."

Referring to the strategic importance of the base, Vance said, “If, God forbid, to my fellow Americans, if a missile was fired from an enemy country or an enemy submarine into the United States, it is the people here before us, who would give notice to our brave men and women further south... to let people know what was coming, and God willing to try to shoot it down and prepare for it.”
He raised concerns about growing interest from Russia and China in the Arctic region, saying, “The US needs to lead in the Arctic because we know that if America doesn’t, other nations will fill the gap.”

Vance blasts Denmark for neglecting Greenland

Turning his attention to Denmark, Vance directly criticised the country for what he described as neglect over the past two decades. He said that Greenland had been “less important” to allies who had “not kept up as China and Russia have taken greater and greater interest.”
“We know that too often our allies in Europe have not kept pace. They haven’t kept pace with military spending,” he said.
“And Denmark has not kept pace in devoting the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view, to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and from other nations,” he added.
Vance claimed there had been “underinvestment in the infrastructure” of Greenland and criticised Denmark’s response to earlier warnings. “There was a lot of criticism from Denmark” for saying “the obvious, which is that Denmark has not done a good job at keeping Greenland safe,” he said.
Although he recognised Denmark’s contributions during the “war on terror”, he insisted the focus should now be on what lies ahead.
He added, “There is no amount of bullying, no amount of obfuscating, no amount of confusing the issue. Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have under invested in the people of Greenland, and you have under invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. ‘You failed to keep it safe’: JD Vance blasts Denmark during first US vice-presidential visit to Greenland

US President Donald Trump on Friday renewed his push for the United States to take control of Greenland, describing the move as essential for global peace and security.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “We are not talking about peace for the United States. We are talking about world peace. We are talking about international security.”
His comments came as Vice President JD Vance and other American officials visited a military base in Greenland, a large, resource-rich territory currently under Danish control.

He stressed that the US interest in Greenland was not about national gain but broader global stability. “We’re not talking about peace for the United States. We’re talking about world peace. We’re talking about international security,” he repeated.
Trump also argued that Greenland has become more strategically important due to advances in military technology and the opening of new maritime routes. “Modern day weaponry makes Greenland” more critical than ever, he said, adding that “Greenland’s very important for the peace of the world, not us, the peace of the entire world.”

Trump says the US must take over Greenland for ‘world peace’, warns China and Russia are ‘all over it’

US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, are expected to arrive in Greenland on Friday (March 28) for a significantly pulled-back visit, following backlash over the original plans. The initial itinerary triggered a diplomatic stir between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
The American delegation includes White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah.

“It’s safe to say we would rather not have him [Vance] in Greenland,” a source from the Danish government told The Guardian.

The visit began as what was described as a personal trip by Usha Vance. She had planned to attend cultural events in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, including a dog-sledding race, and spend time with her son. However, the scale of the security arrangements quickly suggested the trip was more than just a private tour.
Protests were anticipated, and the people of Greenland expressed unease which stemmed from President Donald Trump’s remarks about wanting to acquire Greenland, which he considers vital for American national security.
The announcement that National Security Advisor Waltz would join the group only added to the controversy.

Greenland’s acting Prime Minister, Múte B Egede, criticised the visit, calling it a “provocation” and a “demonstration of power”. He urged the global community to pay attention.
“Just for the record, the government of Greenland has not extended any invitations for any visits, neither private nor official,” Egede said.

However, after statements from Greenland’s leadership and Prime Minister Frederiksen, the US scaled back the plans. The updated schedule now features just one stop, Pituffik Space Base, a remote American military installation in Greenland.

In Sisimiut, the mayor declined to organise a meeting with Mrs Vance, citing the upcoming local elections. Locals were also preparing a silent protest, planning to turn their backs on the American visitors.
Within two days of the trip’s announcement, the cultural events were cancelled. Instead, the focus shifted solely to the military base visit and Vice-President Vance himself was added to the trip. Although Waltz had briefly been removed from the official list, his name was later reinstated.

'Leaders in US, Denmark ignored Greenland for far too long'

Speaking ahead of the visit, JD Vance said, “Leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That’s been bad for Greenland. It’s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction.”
Vance is now the most senior American official to ever visit Greenland. While Denmark appears relieved by the trimmed-down nature of the trip, his presence still stresses the Trump administration’s growing focus on the island.
President Trump has continued to express interest in acquiring Greenland, recently saying that the United States will “go as far as we have to go” to pursue that goal.

‘Cold reception’ awaits JD Vance, wife Usha in Greenland as scaled-back trip draws global attention: What to know

Usha Vance's visit to Greenland has triggered controversy, and the residents are clearly not happy with the news of her trip. According to a Danish media report, American officials were in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, recently and knocked on the doors of people to ask them if they would be willing to host the Second Lady. Almost everyone said "No".
Jesper Steinmetz, a correspondent for Denmark’s TV 2, reported that they offered residents to let their home be a stop-by for Usha Vance but they were just not interested. According to Steinmetz, no one accepted the offer. "No, otherwise thank you," was the response of the majority of the people.

Usha Vance's visit plans changed after this

The White House was forced to change its plans about the Greenland visit, according to the station. The earlier itinerary included attending a dogsledding race and meeting Nuuk locals.

However, an official who spoke to The Hill denied the report.
“This is categorically false. The Second Lady is proud to visit the Pituffik Space Base with her husband to learn more about arctic security and the great work of the Space Base,” a White House official told the publication.

A travel agency based in Nuuk also pulled out after agreeing to host Usha Vance. Now, the second lady and her husband, Vice President JD Vance, are visiting the military installation instead.
“After closer consideration, however, we have now informed the consulate that we do not want her visit, as we cannot accept the underlying agenda and will not be part of the press show that, of course, comes with it,” the company said in a Facebook post. “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”

Donald Trump wants to control Greenland, and people are angry

Greenland’s elections have delivered a fractured mandate, with no party securing a majority in the 31-seat parliament. The Democrats emerged as the largest party but must now negotiate a coalition government. The results could impact Greenland’s path toward independence amid past territorial ambitions from the US under Trump.

Greenland voted Tuesday in legislative elections which could yield a timeline for independence for the Danish self-governing territory coveted by US President Donald Trump.
Trump, determined to get his hands on the vast Arctic island "one way or the other", tried until the last minute to influence the vote, sparking astonishment, rejection, and, to a small degree, enthusiasm among the 57,000 Greenlanders, most of whom favor independence.
After waiting in a long line with other voters, Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede -- who celebrated his 38th birthday on Tuesday -- cast his ballot shortly after polls opened at 9:00 am (1100 GMT).

Independence now or later?

Some, such as the nationalist Naleraq party, the main opposition faction, want to seek independence quickly.
Others prefer to wait until the island is financially independent, including the two parties that make up the outgoing coalition, IA and social democratic Siumut.
The island, covered 80 percent by ice, depends on its fisheries sector, which accounts for almost all of its exports, and annual Danish subsidies of more than $565 million, equivalent to a fifth of its GDP.

More polarisation

Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland during his first mandate, a bid swiftly rejected by Danish and Greenlandic authorities.
Back in the White House, he has circled back on the ambition with greater fervour, refusing to rule out the use of force and invoking US national security.
Late Sunday, Trump invited Greenlanders "to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America", promising to make them "rich".
The most recent polling on the issue, published in January, shows 85 percent of Greenlanders are opposed to Trump's idea.
"I've had enough of his empty threats," Anders Martinsen, a 27-year-old tax service employee, told AFP.
"There are a lot of Greenlanders who see the US differently with Trump as president, who are a little less inclined to cooperate even if that's what they would really want to do," he said.
"They can't own us," insisted Aka-Mark Thor-Moller, a 28-year-old accountant.
He said Greenland should seek independence "as soon as possible but not right now. We have to plan our economic development first."
The statements by Trump -- whom Prime Minister Egede has described as "unpredictable" -- sent a jolt through the election campaign.
Naleraq's nationalists say his remarks have given them leverage ahead of independence negotiations with Denmark.
But the comments have also chilled some independence supporters, making continued ties with Copenhagen more attractive to them, at least for now.
"Staying with Denmark is more important than ever right now because I think Denmark has mostly been good to us," said one voter who identified himself only as Ittukusuk.
"If we become independent, then Trump might get too aggressive and that's what scares me."
Political analysts say Trump's meddling in the election contributed to a more polarised debate by reinforcing each side's convictions, but overall it was not expected to influence the result.

US President Trump's buyout plan clouds Greenland polls | Greenland elections

Greenland heads to the polls on Tuesday in what is being called the most significant election in the Arctic island’s history. While issues such as education, healthcare, and independence remain central to the debate, one factor that has drawn international attention is US President Donald Trump’s determination to acquire Greenland “one way or the other”.
Denmark, which ruled Greenland as a colony until 1953 and still oversees its foreign and security policy, is watching closely, concerned about the potential loss of a key part of its kingdom.

Even before his second term began in January, Trump had revived his earlier ambitions, making it clear that he would not hesitate to take military action or impose tariffs if Denmark refused to cooperate. This has intensified global interest in Greenland’s elections.

Who are the two big contenders in the Greenland polls?

The election is mainly contested between two major political alliances, the coalition led by Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede of Inuit Ataqatigiit, a democratic socialist and pro-independence party, and the opposition party Naleraq, which has been gaining ground with its strong push for independence and openness to US collaboration.

Political analysts say the race is too close to call. Naleraq’s rising popularity signals a shift in Greenland’s political mood, with some voters seeing Trump’s interest as an opportunity to negotiate better terms with Denmark or even accelerate Greenland’s path to independence.
Security concerns have also come into play, with politicians now requiring protection while campaigning, something unprecedented in Greenland’s elections. This political tension includes growing public anger revelations of the alleged mistreatment of Greenlanders by Denmark.

Trump, since he returned to the White House, has been firm on his plan to acquire Greenland even if he would have to use military or economic power to do that.
In an interview on Thursday (Jan 30), Rubio said although the Trump administration is not conducting military action against Denmark, it can be assured that the inrest of the United States in Greenland is real.

France floated sending troops to Greenland

US President Donald Trump has voiced confidence that the United States will gain control of Greenland, after renewed discussions about acquiring the autonomous Danish territory.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday (Jan 25), Trump said, “I think we're going to have it,” claiming that the island’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us.” He reiterated, “I think the people want to be with us,” when asked about Greenland during the press briefing.

Trump questioned Denmark’s claim over the island, describing any refusal to transfer control as “a very unfriendly act.” He added, “It has to do with freedom of the world. It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we're the ones that can provide the freedom. They can't.”

Heated phone call between Trump and Danish PM Mette Frederiksen

His comments follow reports of a heated phone exchange with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during which she reportedly insisted that Greenland is not for sale. While recognising Trump's significant interest in the region, Frederiksen maintained that the territory was not up for negotiation.
Trump’s interest in Greenland dates back to 2019, during his first term, when he described the island as crucial for global security. According to reports, he recently revived the idea and allegedly threatened Denmark with tariffs if it refused to relinquish Greenland.
Frederiksen reportedly proposed enhanced military and economic cooperation between the US and Greenland, including access to the island’s mineral resources. However, Trump is said to have rejected this, insisting on full US control.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede responded by emphasising that decisions regarding the island’s land use rest solely with Greenland. While open to closer collaboration with the US, particularly in defence and mining, Egede underscored the island’s autonomy.
Frederiksen echoed this sentiment earlier this month, stating, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” and reaffirmed that only its people can decide the territory’s future.
When asked if military or economic measures were off the table in pursuing Greenland, Trump declined to rule them out.

Trump allegedly threatened Denmark with tariffs if it refused to give up control of the island, which is an autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen tried to offer closer military and economic cooperation between the US and Greenland, including access to mineral resources, but Trump reportedly dismissed the proposal, insisting on full US control.
“It was horrendous,” one source familiar with the call told Financial Times. Another source said, “He was very firm. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But now, it seems serious and potentially very dangerous.”
A former Danish official told the Financial Times that the conversation was “very tough,” adding that Trump specifically mentioned possible tariffs targeting Denmark.
“The intent was very clear. They want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,” one official briefed on the call told FT. Another European official said, “The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.”
Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland during his initial term as president and revived the proposal before his inauguration. He posted on his social media platform Truth Social that American control of the territory is essential for US national security.

Earlier Greenland government had said that it is open to higher defence and trade cooperation with the US, but it has remained firm on retaining its autonomy. The island, with a population of approximately 57,000, hosts a US military base.
Greenland Prime Minister, Mute Egede, welcomed US investment in mining and tourism but said that decisions about Greenland’s future lie with its people. “We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t want to be Americans. Of course, we want to be Greenlanders,” Egede said.

Meanwhile, the European Union has also shown interest in placing its troops on Greenland. Robert Brieger, the chairman of the European Union Military Committee, suggested that EU forces could join US troops already stationed on the island. In an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Brieger said, “In my view, it would make perfect sense not only to station US forces in Greenland, as has been the case to date, but also to consider stationing EU soldiers there in the future.”
