Even as shockwaves run through Cuba, Greenland and Colombia over the next move by the United States after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged America to stop "threatening" Greenland. Trump has claimed, again and again, that making the Danish territory part of the United States would serve US national security interests, given its strategic location on the Arctic. Frederiksen clearly stated that the US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom. Greenland has a population of 57,000 people, has had extensive self-government since 1979, though defence and foreign policy remain in Danish hands. It is also rich in key critical minerals used in high-tech sectors. "I have to say this very clearly to the United States: it is absolutely absurd to say that the United States should take control of Greenland…It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland…The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom," Frederiksen said in a statement late Sunday. She also added, “I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have very clearly said that they are not for sale.” Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also criticised Katie Miller's post calling it “disrespectful." "Relations between nations and peoples are built on mutual respect and international law -- not on symbolic gestures that disregard our status and our rights," he stated on X. But he also said that “there is neither reason for panic nor for concern. Our country is not for sale, and our future is not decided by social media posts.” Denmark's ambassador to the US, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, also reacted saying “we expect full respect for the territorial integrity.”
Is Greenland next?
Even as Danish PM pushed back, Trump, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said, “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.” Addressing the media after the capture of Maduro, Trump had said, “We need Greenland. Meanwhile, Katie Miller, wife of Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted the contentious image of the Danish autonomous territory in the colours of the US flag on her X feed. Trump from the start of his presidency in 2025 has maintained that Greenland is essential for US national security. Trump has earlier dismissed Denmark's historical claim to the territory, remarking, "They say that Denmark was there 300 years ago... well we were there with boats too, I'm sure". In December 2025, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. Landry has publicly stated his role is to help "make Greenland a part of the US." Back in 2019, Trump had first proposed the idea of "buying Greenland" describing it as a "strategic real estate acquisition."

US bombs Venezuela, captures and jails Maduro
In an operation titled Operation Absolute Resolve, the US, on Saturday (Jan 3), entered Venezuela, bombed Caracas and captured Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores from their presidential palace. Maduro was flown to USS Iwo Jima, then to Guantánamo Bay, and finally by government plane to Stewart Air National Guard Base in NY. He is held at Brooklyn’s notorious Metropolitan Detention Center, and he faces narco-terrorism charges. He is set to appear in Manhattan federal court on Jan 5.

The real reason why Trump wants Greenland to become a US state?

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 22) reiterated that the United States “needs” Greenland for national security and not for minerals. The EU has also voiced support for Denmark, saying that the 27-nation bloc stands in “full solidarity” with member country Denmark.“Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law,” European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa said on X.

"These regions are certainly remote, but they are now affected by a form of conflict, a new form of aggression, which is why France, a major maritime power, is present there today," Barrot said. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly said the United States needs strategically located, resource-rich Greenland for security reasons, and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it. Both Denmark and Greenland have insisted the island is not for sale and that it will decide its future itself. Most of Greenland's 57,000 people want to become independent from Denmark, according to a January poll, but do not wish to become part of the United States.

Denmark summoned the US charge d'affaires on Wednesday after the report of the interference operation aimed at gathering information on issues that have created tension between Greenland and Denmark. France's foreign ministry said Barrot's trip will "demonstrate France's solidarity with Denmark, Greenland and the Greenlandic people in the face of current challenges", according to a statement. The foreign minister visited a French naval vessel, the BSAM Garonne, in the port of Nuuk, Greenland's capital, on Saturday. "These regions are certainly remote, but they are now affected by a form of conflict, a new form of aggression, which is why France, a major maritime power, is present there today," Barrot said. He will meet Sunday with his Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen before holding a press conference. French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland in June, expressing European solidarity with its people and criticising Trump's threat to annex the Arctic island.

France expresses 'solidarity' to people of Greenland amid Trump's takeover plan

Denmark summoned the US charge d'affaires on Wednesday, (Aug 27) in response to reports alleging American attempts to interfere in Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The move came amid rising concerns about US interest in the strategically important, resource-rich island—a territory US President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to acquire for national security purposes. According to Danish public broadcaster DR, at least three American officials with close ties to Trump were reportedly spotted in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, seeking individuals who could potentially support US-backed influence efforts aimed at weakening Danish control. Speaking to Danish television, Frederiksen remarked, “I note that the Americans have not clearly rejected the DR report today, and that is of course serious.” She had previously reacted strongly to similar allegations, stating firmly: “You cannot spy against an ally,” underlining the fundamental breach of trust such actions would represent between close partners. Trump's 'Greenland takeover' plans: Denmark summons US diplomat over 'spying' reports, America says 'calm down' - What's happening

A massive iceberg is drifting towards a small Greenland village and has been flagged as a major threat by authorities. The iceberg could crash into the island, destroying homes and injuring residents. There is a chance it could break apart, which would also be bad news. The large chunks of ice would trigger massive waves when they fall into the water. The waves would wash ashore, sweeping everything in their range. People in Innaarsuit are watching the iceberg, as big as the one that the Titanic hit, approaching their island. It is on a collision course with the tiny landmass. Residents are worried about its impact. Authorities have warned people to remain vigilant. However, the bigger problem is that instead of continuously drifting towards Innaarsuit, it has remained stationary.
People warned to be alert at sea and on land
The people in the island village of Greenland largely depend on fishing as a source of income. They have been warned not to get too close to the iceberg when traversing the waters while sailing to or leaving the island. Those on land, going about daily activities, have also been advised to remain alert as there are chances the iceberg could break up. If this happens, a large swell will be triggered, which could cause structural damage and wash away low-lying areas. “Emergency services encourage families not to go in a group towards the store, while at the same time asking people with walking difficulties to be extra careful when walking towards the store,” the New York Post reported them as saying. Greenland’s new prime minister said on Sunday (Apr 27) that the Arctic island would never be a “piece of property” to be bought, criticising US President Donald Trump’s plans of seizing the Danish autonomous territory as lacking respect.
“We will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone, and that's the message I think is most important to understand,” Jens-Frederik Nielsen told reporters alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during his first visit to Denmark since taking office.

“Our message to Denmark is very simple — you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance had said.

During the interview, the president also said that he “couldn’t care less” if automakers raised their prices due to 25 per cent tariffs on all foreign-made automobiles.
When asked his recent message to automobile industry CEOs, the president said: “The message is congratulations, if you make your car in the United States, you’re going to make a lot of money. If you don’t, you’re going to have to probably come to the United States, because if you make your car in the United States, there is no tariff.”
