A claim has emerged against Donald Trump Jr stating that the group of people who were seen wearing Make America Great Again caps at the lunch hosted by him in Greenland were not Trump supporters. In reality, they were homeless people who were lured by free food, it is alleged.

Trump Jr, who visited the Greenland capital Nuuk last week after his father said the US must take control of the Danish territory, went to the Hotel Hans Egede with a group of people for lunch. The people were seen wearing MAGA hats, and Trump Jr. told them he was going to "treat" them well.
The hotel's management said many people in the group did not even know Trump Jr and his team found them on the streets.

Did Donald Trump Jr lure homeless people with food to appear as MAGA supporters?

Less than a week is left before United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump is officially sworn in. Post his handsome victory in the November 5, 2024, presidential election against Kamala Harris, Trump has made many proposals.
The proposals range from a demand to make Canada the 51st state of the US, regain control of the Panama Canal, and an offer to buy Greenland.
This is not the first time that Trump has offered to buy Greenland. He made the demand in 2019 as well, while serving as president.

In Washington's eyes, Greenland is vital for national security. Post-World War II, the Truman administration was reported to have offered Denmark $100 million for the island.

Denmark offers Trump a ‘third way’ on Greenland, says open to increased US military presence

Greenland is important for the United States' national security, U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz said on Wednesday, following comments by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump suggesting the U.S. should take control of the island.
During an interview with Fox News, Waltz, who was tapped to serve as Trump's national security adviser, was asked about Trump wanting U.S. control over the Arctic island.
"You have Russia that is trying to become king of the Arctic, with 60-plus ice breakers, some of them nuclear power," he said. "We have two, and one just caught on fire."
Waltz added, "This is about critical minerals. This is about natural resources. This is about, as the polar ice caps pullback, the Chinese are now cranking out ice breakers and pushing up there as well. So it's oil and gas. It's our national security."
Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, refused on Tuesday to rule out using military or economic action to acquire the island, an autonomous territory of Denmark. In his first term, Trump suggested that Denmark should sell Greenland, but the Danish government rebuffed that idea.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede has also stated that the island is not for sale.
The Arctic island's government on Wednesday acknowledged the changing security dynamics in the Arctic and said it looks forward to working with incoming Trump administration and other NATO allies to ensure security and stability in the region.
Greenland, which is part of NATO through the membership of Denmark, straddles the shortest route between Europe and North America and is strategically important for the U.S. military and its ballistic missile early-warning system.

US President-elect Donald Trump calls Greenland & Panama Canal critical to US

Greenland may become independent if its residents want, but is unlikely to become a U.S. state, Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out force to take control of the Arctic island.
Greenland's leader met with the Danish king in Copenhagen on Wednesday, a day after Trump's remarks thrust the fate of the mineral-rich and strategically important island, which is under Danish rule, to the top of world headlines.
Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, said on Tuesday he would not rule out using military or economic action to make Greenland part of the United States. The same day, Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., made a private visit to Greenland.

Greenland, part of NATO through the membership of Denmark, has strategic significance for the U.S. military and for its ballistic missile early-warning system since the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the Arctic island.
The president-elect has indicated he would pursue a more combative foreign policy that disregards traditional diplomatic formalities.
Greenland, the world's biggest island, has been part of Denmark for 600 years although its 57,000 people now govern their own domestic affairs. The island's government led by Prime Minister Mute Egede aims for eventual independence.

"We fully recognise that Greenland has its own ambitions. If they materialise, Greenland will become independent, though hardly with an ambition to become a federal state in the United States," Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said.
He told reporters the United States' heightened security concerns in the Arctic were legitimate following increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
"I don't think that we're in a foreign policy crisis," he said. "We are open to a dialogue with the Americans on how we can possibly cooperate even more closely than we do to ensure that the American ambitions are fulfilled."

Still, although Denmark itself played down the seriousness of Trump's threat to its territory, the returning president's openly stated ambition to expand U.S. borders has jolted European allies less than two weeks before he takes office.
France's foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, said Europe would not let other nations attack its sovereign borders, although he did not believe the U.S. would invade.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed surprise at Trump's comments about Greenland and Canada, underlining that European partners unanimously uphold the inviolability of borders.

Strained relations

Greenland's relations with Denmark have lately been strained by allegations of mistreatment of Greenlanders. Egede has said the island is not for sale, while in his New Year speech he stepped up his push for independence. Denmark says the territory's fate can be decided only by Greenlanders.
Greenland's Finance Minister Erik Jensen repeated that Greenland is not for sale. "Our wish is to become independent one day. But our ambition is not to go from being governed by one country to another."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday she could not imagine Trump's ambitions would lead to U.S. military intervention in Greenland. Denmark's military capabilities there are limited to four inspection vessels, a Challenger surveillance plane and dog sled patrols.
Responding to Trump's threat of tariffs against Denmark, which according to analysts at Danske Bank could potentially be "quite harmful to Danish companies, Frederiksen said she did not think a trade war with the United States was a good way forward.
Denmark is home to Novo Nordisk, Europe's most valuable company, which makes weight-loss drug Wegovy that has become hugely popular in the United States, the Nordic country's biggest trading partner.
The Danish royal palace gave no details of King Frederik's meeting with Greenland's Egede.
While many Greenlanders dream of independence from Denmark, the king remains popular on the island, having spent extended periods there, including a four-month expedition on the ice sheet. Last month, the royal court modified its coat of arms, enlarging a polar bear that symbolises Greenland.
"He's popular in Greenland. So he can clearly be helpful to the Danish-Greenlandic relationship," Damien Degeorges, a Reykjavik-based consultant specialising in Greenland, told Reuters.
Trump already raised the issue of the U.S. taking over Greenland during his first presidency, but his latest remarks still left many Danes baffled.
"I find it extremely ridiculous," said Jeppe Finne Sorenson, a data engineer in the Danish capital. "We have an alliance, we're allies. So this doesn't really respect that."

So this doesn't really respect that." Denmark says Greenland can be 'independent' but not part of United States

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Wednesday (Jan 8) rubbished President-elect Donald Trump’s idea to take over Greenland, terming it “not a good one”. At a press conference in Paris held alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Blinken argued that the US should refrain from propagating narratives that may “alienate” American allies.
“I think one of the basic propositions we brought to our work over the last four years is that we’re stronger, we’re more effective. We get better results when we’re working closely with our allies, not saying or doing things that may alienate them,” the top US diplomat said.
He added that the annexation of Greenland is “obviously” not going to happen.

House Democrats also reject Trump's Greenland push

Blinken’s statement came after Democratic House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries declared that his party would not back Trump’s expansionist agenda because Republican lawmakers were not elected to pursue such policies.
“House Democrats believe that they are not sent to Washington to invade Greenland, rename the Gulf of Mexico or seize the Panama Canal by force. America becomes Trumperica: Grab for Canada, Greenland is battle for wealth not wasteland

France, Germany and the EU have issued a cautious warning to Donald Trump, urging the US president-elect to refrain from actions that threaten the “sovereign borders” of the European Union. This comes after Trump refused to rule out using military force to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, a member state of the EU.
“There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be... attack its sovereign borders,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said during an interview with France Inter radio.

Barrot also said that he believes that the US is “inherently not imperialistic” and he doubts that this fundamental nature is changing. However, French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas said, “Today we are seeing the rise in blocs, we can see this as a form of imperialism, which materialises itself in the statements that we saw from Mr Trump on the annexation of an entire territory.”

'Thanks, but no thanks': EU nations strike cautious tone over Trump's Greenland plan

US President-elect Donald Trump has refused to rule out the use of military force to seize control of the Panama Canal and Greenland. He declared that US control over both territories would be crucial to American national security.

Donald Trump escalates threats against Greenland, Panama canal

Donald Trump Jr.’s recent trip to Greenland has sparked speculations about what the US President-elect Donald Trump is planning. His visit came two weeks after Trump suggested that he wanted to acquire Greenland.
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said in a post on his Truth social media platform.

During a press conference on Tuesday (Jan 7), Trump was asked whether he would use military or economic coercion to acquire Greenland. To this, he responded by saying, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two, but I can say this: We need them for economic security.”
The president-elect has suggested that having Greenland will benefit the US in security. However, some experts believe that he may also be looking to use the natural resources that are found on the world’s largest island.

Geopolitical position

Home to 56,000 people, Greenland is a former Danish colony with a unique geopolitical position. The country lies between the US and Europe, with its capital, Nuuk, closer to New York than Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
The location of Greenland also offers a strategic maritime region of Northwest Passage shipping lane between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom.

Rare minerals

Greenland is rich in deposits of natural resources, which may be appealing to Trump. The island has oil, gas, and other rare metals that could be used in the production of green technologies like electric cars and wind turbines, as well as military equipment.

Opportunities amid loss of ice

The melting of ice in Greenland and Arctic regions due to climate change has created some economic opportunities. The loss of ice has led to the opening of new shipping routes, that could make shipping faster and increase its frequency. This also makes access to the natural resources easier.

Trump is not the only US president to suggest gaining ownership of the island country. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson bought the Alaskan territory. He also considered buying Greenland and offered $100 million to Denmark for its ownership, but the deal was not made.
Currently, the US has an air base, Pituffik Space Base, in northwest Greenland under the 1951 defence treaty.

On Wednesday (Dec 18), Trump had proposed that Canada should join the United States. “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”, he wrote on his social media.

His comments have sparked discussions, especially given the ongoing tensions over trade and tariffs between the US and Canada.

The recent post comes just a day after Donald Trump reiterated his longstanding desire to purchase Greenland, calling it an “absolute necessity” for US national security. Trump has previously made similar remarks about the self-governing territory, arguing that it would be strategically important for the US to own it.

Earlier on Tuesday (Dec 10), Trump also mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him the "Governor of the Great State of Canada." Sharing a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said, "It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada."

"I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! ," he added.

#GRAVITAS | President-elect Donald Trump said the US should seek to gain control of Greenland after he threatened to take over the Panama Canal by force. Few days back, Trump had trolled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state of the US. Watch this video to find out more.

GRAVITAS: Trump Wants To Take Control Panama Canal, Greenland, Include Canada As 51st State

Washington, United States
US President-elect Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy by suggesting that the United States should buy and take control of Greenland, calling it an "absolute necessity" for national security.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." Greenland, while geographically part of North America, is an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark.
Responding to Trump's comments Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede said, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

This is not the first time Trump has shown interest in buying Greenland. During his first term as president, he suggested the idea of purchasing the island and even cancelled a state visit to Denmark after Danish officials dismissed the proposal.
At the time, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,” during a visit to the island in 2019.
The United States already maintains a presence in Greenland through the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) on the island’s northwest coast. The US has considered acquiring Greenland on multiple occasions since 1867.
Trump’s recent comments about Greenland come after another controversial demand, where he called on Panamanian authorities to lower transit fees for US ships using the Panama Canal or return control of the canal to the United States.

In response to Trump’s comments, Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino posted on social media platform X, “I want to express precisely that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to Panama, and will continue to.”
Mulino added, “The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable. Every Panamanian, here or anywhere in the world, carries it in their heart, and it is part of our history of struggle and irreversible conquest.”

Something incredible happened in Greenland in 2023, when a mountaintop collapsed into the sea, triggering a mega-tsunami about 200 metres (650 feet) tall. The giant wave was so strong that it rocked inside the narrow Dickson Fjord for nine days.

The event generated seismic waves that cut through the Earth's crust and also lasted for a whopping nine straight days.

When scientists recorded a mysterious seismic signal in 2023, they were unsure of what was happening. Instead of the frequency-rich rumble typical of earthquakes, they noticed only a monotonous hum, with only a single vibration frequency.

An international team of scientists decided to solve the mystery. They traced the origin of the seismic signal back to the tsunami waves in Greenland. The study has been published in the journal Science.

"When we set out on this scientific adventure, everybody was puzzled and no one had the faintest idea what caused this signal," said Kristian Svennevig, a geologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and the study's lead author.

"All we knew was that it was somehow associated with the landslide. We only managed to solve this enigma through a huge interdisciplinary and international effort."

Rock and ice that could fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools had plunged into the fjord. A 200-metre-high mega-tsunami was triggered, along with a phenomenon known as a seiche.

Siche is when a wave continues to slosh around in an icy fjord back and forth. This one rocked some 10,000 times over nine days. It was 200 metres tall, the tallest wave recorded anywhere on Earth since 1980.

It was many times higher than the tsunami waves triggered by an undersea earthquake in Indonesia in 2004, and in Japan in 2011, the authors wrote in the paper.

Stephen Hicks, Research Fellow in Computational Seismology, UCL and Kristian Svennevig, Senior Researcher, Department of Mapping and Mineral Resources, Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, informed that 66 other scientists from 40 institutions across 15 countries worked together to find the source of the mysterious signal.

What caused the fall?

Climate change. Study authors say that global heating had "thinned the glacier by several tens of metres, meaning that the mountain towering above it could no longer be held up."

"The landslide travelled down a very steep glacier in a narrow gully before plunging into a narrow, confined fjord," they wrote.

Scientists say that this is not the last time something like this has happened. "As permafrost on steep slopes continues to warm and glaciers continue to thin we can expect these events to happen more often and on an even bigger scale across the world's polar and mountainous regions," they said.

In present times, Greenland's 98 per cent area is covered with ice, however, less than a million years ago, it was almost ice-free and was filled with green tundra, as per the new research. After studying a new fossil discovery from Greenland, the study has stated that the evidence "provides the first direct evidence that the centre — not just the edges — of Greenland's ice sheet melted away in the recent geological past". This was part of the statement released by the University of Vermont. "Our new data is the strongest confirmation yet that the ice in the centre of the island vanished and was replaced by a tundra ecosystem," said study lead author Paul Bierman, who is a geologist at the University of Vermont, while speaking to Live Science. For studying the Greenland's past, a sample of ice core which was extracted in 1993 was reexamined by the research team. In the analysis, the scientists discovered a plethora of fossils, which included fungi, willow and insect body parts. However, the scientist's most spectacular discovery was made in the preserved Arctic poppy seed, which left the team astonished. Also Read: Days are becoming longer as climate change is altering Earth's axis of rotation "The original plan with the sample was to measure [carbon-dating] isotopes, we didn't know we were going to find fossils," said Bierman. The scientists also found important evidence in the specimen of rock spike moss (Selaginella rupestris) which is still present in sandy and rocky places. "They need the things all plants need to grow, and they can't get those on top of an ice sheet," said Halley Mastro, a graduate student at the University of Vermont and co-author of the study, while speaking to Live Science. "They just wouldn't grow," he added. Scientists detect loss of ice in Greenland million years ago In a 2016 study conducted on the core, it was suggested that the current Greenland ice sheet was almost 1.1 million yeas old. The scientists also estimated that the loss of the ice at a site, known as GISP2, will mean that 90 per cent of Greenland was nearly ice-free at that time. Bierman and Mastro reexamined the 1993 core which was kept at the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility in Colorado for nearly 30 years. "The ice part of the core has been extensively analysed," said Bierman. Watch: Impact of Climate Change on Vineyard: High temp force grapes to mature early "The people who were taking the ice cores weren't thinking much about what was beneath. After one set of analysis on the sediment, it was put in a bag on a shelf. We would not have known to check if we didn't already have a project working on sediments below the ice," he added. "It will take decades, if not centuries, to lose its ice completely, but most of the sea level rise, more than other places, is coming from Greenland," said Bierman. (With inputs from agencies)

Greenland once had no ice, was green tundra filled with flowers a million years ago: Study

Predicting the weather months in advance has long been a challenge for meteorologists, but a recent study published in the journal Weather and Climate Dynamics has made a surprising prediction: the melt rate of the Greenland ice sheet.

According to Dr Marilena Oltmanns from the UK National Oceanography Centre, who spoke to the Guardian, the melting rate of Greenland's ice sheet could offer insights into Europe's summer weather patterns.

A complex chain of events

Dr Oltmanns, the lead author of the study, outlined the intricate sequence of events that connects Greenland's melt rate to Europe's summer weather.

Warmer temperatures in Greenland result in increased glacial meltwater entering the Atlantic Ocean. This freshwater, being less dense than seawater, accumulates on the ocean's surface, disrupting the exchange of heat between the air and the sea.

Also read | Why do cheetahs run so fast? Scientists reveal reason behind the animal's speed

Consequently, stronger winds form around the region of meltwater. During the winter months, these winds drive a northward shift in the North Atlantic current, an extension of the Gulf Stream.

Come summer time, the prevailing winds align with the direction of the North Atlantic current, redirecting northward.

This sets the stage for the development of large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns that typically bring warmer and drier conditions to Europe.

Dr Oltmanns suggested that by analysing the location, extent, and intensity of freshwater events, researchers can estimate the likelihood of warm and dry weather in Europe during the subsequent summer.

Drawing from their findings, Dr Oltmanns anticipated that ocean-atmosphere conditions will favour an unusually warm and dry summer across southern Europe this year.

By understanding the complex interplay between Greenland's melt rate and Europe's weather patterns, scientists hope to improve the accuracy of long-range weather forecasts and provide valuable insights for planning and preparation.

Greenland's melting rate of ice sheets can predict Europe's summer weather. Here's how

With Arctic sea ice shrinking from climate change, many polar bears have to shift their diets during parts of the summer. A study looking at Hudson bay polar bears suggests they are at risk of starvation.

Greenland ice cover shrinking & under threat of runaway greenhouse effect

Significant regions of Greenland are seeing a rise in vegetation as a result of the ice sheet melting, raising the possibility of problems including increasing sea levels, higher greenhouse gas emissions, and unstable terrain. Large ice-covered areas have changed into marshes, shrub growth, and bare rock, according to a research conducted between the 1980s and the present.

A study conducted since the 1980s has recorded significant changes, revealing that extensive ice-covered areas have been transformed into barren rock, wetlands, and shrub growth. This transformation is bringing about a noticeable shift in the environment.

Satellite records analysis indicates that in the last thirty years, approximately 11,000 square miles of Greenland's ice sheet and glaciers have melted. This area is comparable to the size of Albania and represents 1.6% of the total ice cover in Greenland.

The amount of land covered by vegetation has increased by 33,774 square miles as a result of the ice retreating. This expansion covers an area that is more than twice as large as it did when the study first started.

The results indicate that wetlands, a source of methane emissions, are nearly quadrupling throughout Greenland.

According to scientists, the ice is receding due to rising air temperatures; during the 1970s, the area has warmed up twice as quickly as the rest of the world. The average yearly air temperature on Greenland from 2007 to 2012 was 3C higher than the average from 1979 to 2000.

The results show indications that additional ice loss is being caused by the growing vegetation.

The report's lead author, Dr. Michael Grimes, stated, "The flow of sediments and nutrients into coastal seas is being considerably altered by the expansion of vegetation, which is happening in tandem with the retreat of glaciers and the ice sheet."

Dr. Grimes emphasised the significance of these changes, especially for Indigenous populations whose traditional subsistence hunting practices depend on the stability of these fragile ecosystems. Additionally, the loss of ice mass in Greenland plays a substantial role in contributing to global sea level rise, presenting significant challenges both in the present and for the future.

In order to keep an eye on the situation, the researchers have utilized their data to create a model that will identify Greenland regions that are most likely to undergo marked and fast change in the future.

Significant regions of Greenland are seeing a rise in vegetation as a result of the ice sheet melting, raising the possibility of problems including increasing sea levels, higher greenhouse gas emissions, and unstable terrain.

Climate experts warn of concerns arising from robust plant growth on Greenland ice sheet

A startup based in Greenland is selling what they call the "purest ice in the world." It is harvested directly from the rapidly melting glaciers of Greenland and distributed to upscale cocktail bars in Dubai. This has sparked concerns among some who fear its catastrophic impact on the environment.

Scientists from University of Copenhagen said on Friday (November 10) that global warming has increased the speed of melting of Greenland glaciers fivefold in last 20 years. Greenland's ice cover is closely monitored because these ancient ice sheets contain so much water that if they were to melt completely, sea levels would rise by at least 20 feet.

Anders Anker Bjork, who is assistant professor at the department of geosciences and natural resource management at the University of Copenhagen, told Reuters that the rate of melting of ice has entered a new phase in past 20 years. The conclusion was arrived at after a study of a thousand glaciers in the area.

"There is a very clear correlation between the temperature we experience on the planet and the changes we observe in how rapidly the glaciers are melting," Bjork said.

The scientists studied the development of the glaciers over the past 130 years with the help of satellite imagery and 200,000 old photos.

Global warming has already taken average global temperatures 1.2 degrees Celsius above that in pre-industrial years. Scientists from the European Union have said earlier this month that 2023 is "virtually certain" to be the warmest in 125,000 years.

If we truly want to lower the global temperature, it will take a global push to limit and even minimise greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, said Jørgen Eivind Olesen, Director of the Climate Institute at Aarhus University.

"I believe we can prepare for those glaciers to continue to melt at increasing speeds," Olesen said.

In order to study effects on climate change on Greenland's ice sheet, glaciers here are often studied as an indicator.

"If we start to see glaciers losing mass several times faster than in the last century, it can make us expect that the ice sheet will follow the same path just on a slower and longer time scale," William Colgan, senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) said.
