The ice shelves of Greenland have seen a disappearance of more than a third in their volume since 1978, stated the researchers.

The disintegration of the ice shelves has been accelerated because of warm ocean waters which have melted them from beneath and increased their chances of collapsing.

Among the eight ice shelves which supported the vast glaciers of North Greenland, three have completely collapsed, while the five which remain have been retreating rapidly.

Scientists have said that with the warming of the ocean, the ice shelves will continuously retreat and will have threatening consequences for global sea levels.

As per experts from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), if these ice shelves entirely disappear, they can release enough water to increase global sea levels by 6.8ft (2.1m).

Speaking to CNN, the author of the study and a glaciologist at the Grenoble Alpes University in France Romain Millan said, “These glaciers are among the most important of the ice sheet. They are the largest glaciers of Greenland.”

He stated that the glaciers in Greenland's different parts began to lose mass in the 1980s and 1990s, and so far those present in northern Greenland “have remained relatively stable.” As per the study, this, however, does not appear to be the case any longer.

Thousands of satellite images, as well as measurements from the field and climate models, were used by Millan and his co-authors to get a better understanding of the historical and current changes being observed in the ice shelves.

In the study, the scientists discovered a “substantial and widespread” increase in ice shelf disappearances.

The researchers, headed by Romain Millan, wrote in Nature Communications, “Overall, 25 per cent of the ice sheet area is drained through former or remaining ice shelves, which represents a sea level rise equivalent of 2.1 m.”

“If the glaciers located in North Greenland lose the buttressing provided by ice shelves, the increase in discharge could rival the largest contributors to Greenland ice mass loss,” they added.

Since 1978, there has been a decrease of more than 35 per cent in the total volume of ice shelves which support the glaciers of northern Greenland, as per the study.

“We can see that the ice shelves are weakening and that’s new key information that we didn’t know, because we thought that this part of Greenland was really stable,” Millan said.

4,500 women fitted with birth control devices without consent

A group of 67 women from Greenland is seeking compensation from the Danish government for a campaign of involuntary birth control that occurred in the 1960s. This campaign targeted at least 4,500 women, including teenagers, with the aim of limiting birth rates among the indigenous population of Greenland, which was a Danish colony until 1953.

The extensive nature of this campaign was exposed last year in a podcast published by Danish broadcaster DR. National archive records revealed that between 1966 and 1970, intrauterine devices (IUDs) were implanted in women, some as young as 13, without their knowledge or consent, reported BBC.

A commission established by the Danish and Greenlandic governments to investigate this programme is not due to deliver its findings until May 2025. However, the affected women, some now in their 70s, are not willing to wait for the results of the inquiry. They are demanding compensation of 300,000 kroner ($42,150) each.

Health Complications and Lack of Awareness

Some women experienced serious health complications, including infertility, as the devices inserted were often too large for their bodies. In other cases, women were completely unaware of the presence of these devices until they were discovered recently during gynaecological examinations.

Psychologist Naja Lyberth, who initiated the compensation claim, has accused the Danish government of wanting to control Greenland's population size in order to reduce welfare costs. She asserts that the government violated human rights and caused serious harm to the affected women.

Legal action

Mads Pramming, the lawyer representing the women, submitted the compensation claim to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's office. While it is expected that the government may delay the request until the commission concludes its investigation, the group is prepared to take legal action if necessary.

Greenland, with a population of approximately 57,000, is the largest island and the northernmost land area globally. While it has its own flag, language, and prime minister, aspects like currency, the justice system, and foreign and security affairs are still under Danish control.

The women affected by the forced birth control campaign are determined to seek justice and acknowledgement of the harm they endured, regardless of the ongoing commission's findings.

Cruise with 200 on board, including some with Covid, pulled free after running aground in Greenland

A luxury cruise ship carrying 206 people remained stuck in a remote Greenland location on Wednesday (September 13) as the tide failed to lift it. The Danish military's Joint Arctic Command (JAC) said the 104-metre (341-foot) Ocean Explorer needed more help from the tide to be lifted out of the position it is currently stuck in.

A large trawler attempted to pull the cruise ship during the tide but ultimately failed in the pursuit. Photos taken by the Danish military showed the cruise ship standing still in calm waters with the sun shining.

"The crew and passengers are in a difficult situation, but under the circumstances the atmosphere on the ship is good and everyone on board is doing well," the JAC said.

The JAC added that it was in contact with nearby ships to see whether they would be able to help free the Ocean Explorer.

Greenland was once as green as its name, oldest DNA discovery reveals

A new report says, Greenland's melting 'zombie ice' could raise global sea level by 10.6 inches. This could make floods more frequent & erode coastlines the world over. What's worse, scientists say there's no way to stop the ice from melting. Why? Palki Sharma Upadhyay explains.

Gravitas: Greenland's 'zombie ice' to raise sea level by 10 inches

As tourists flock to Greenland to take in its breathtaking icebergs and natural beauty, authorities are mulling ways to control crowds. This is done to protect the fragile environment which is already threatened by global warming.

A new species of fish found in an Arctic iceberg has left researchers fascinated because of its looks and its abilities to glow green. The scientists, who found the variety of snailfish, described it as “extra-terrestrial-looking” and said that the anti-freeze proteins present in their blood allows them to glow bright green. David Gruber, a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History and a biology professor at City University of New York's Baruch College, headed the study.

"The snailfish was one of the few species of fish living among the icebergs, in the crevices. It was surprising that such a tiny fish could live in such an extremely cold environment without freezing."

"Antifreeze proteins stick to the surface of smaller ice crystals and slow or prevent them from growing into larger, and more dangerous, crystals,” Gruber said in his research paper.

"Fish from both the North and South Poles independently evolved these proteins," he added.

The discovery, which was made off the coast of Greenland, is a clear indication of the evolutionary changes in marine organisms. The glow is considered to be a feature which was developed by the species to maintain body its body temperature in the harsh conditions of the Arctic region.

"The fact that these different antifreeze proteins have evolved independently in a number of different — and not closely related — fish lineages show[s] how critical they are to the survival of these organisms in these extreme habitats," John Sparks, co-author of the study, told Live Science.

WION Climate Tracker: Tourists wish to travel to Greenland 'before it disappears'

In a new study, scientists have identified an isolated subpopulation of polar bears in Southeast Greenland that make use of freshwater ice pouring into the ocean from the region's glaciers, suggesting this particular habitat is less susceptible than others to climate change. Their findings, described in the journal Science on Thursday, open up the tantalizing possibility that at least some pockets of the species might be able to survive further into this century when Arctic sea ice is expected to disappear completely during the summer months.

Polar bears face an existential threat from the rapid decline of Arctic sea ice, which they rely on as platforms to hunt seals. "One of the big questions is where in the Arctic will polar bears be able to hang on, what we call 'persist,'" first author Kristin Laidre, a polar scientist at the University of Washington and Greenland Institute of Natural Resources says.

"I think that bears in a place like this can teach us a lot about where those places might be," she adds.
Laidre and colleagues first spent two years interviewing Inuit subsistence hunters who provided input and ecological knowledge, including harvest samples for analysis. They then began their fieldwork, which lasted from 2015 to 2021, in a harsh region long understudied because of its unpredictable weather, heavy snowfall and jagged mountains.

Each year, the team would spend one month in springtime, staying in the nearest settlement Kuummiit, which is a two-hour helicopter ride from where the bears live. Fuel depots had to be staged along the route in advance down the coastline, creating a hopscotch-like commute to work.

The team tagged the bears with satellite tracking devices and collected genetic samples by either capturing bears or firing biopsy darts into their rumps. Thought to number a few hundred individuals, "they are the most genetically isolated population of polar bears anywhere on the planet," said co-author Beth Shapiro, a geneticist at the University of California, Santa Cruz and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, in a statement.

We know that this population has been living separately from other polar bear populations for at least several hundred years. Unlike their cousins, the Southeast Greenland polar bears were found to be homebodies, seldom straying far to hunt. Their isolation arises from the geography: they live in a complex landscape of fjords on the very edge of their range on the southern tip of Greenland, well below the Arctic circle, with nowhere to go.

To the west, there are an enormous set of mountains and the Greenland Ice Sheet and to the east the open water of the Denmark Strait all the way to Iceland. They also have to contend with a rapid current that flows southward along the coast. "We see that when they get caught in this current they jump off the ice and they walk back home to their fjords," said Laidre. The team found that some of the tracked bears accidentally caught in this situation had to trek more than a hundred miles back home.

Can polar bears survive without Arctic ice? Scientists think so. Here's why

A new study has revealed that Greenland's ice sheet is melting rapidly from its base, and as a result, the melting water is contributing to sea level rise around the globe.

The research study claims that Greenland's ice sheet, the biggest ice sheet in the world after Antarctica, has melted so much in the past decade that global sea levels rose by 1 centimetre.

During warmer months, meltwater meanders into lakes and streams on the surface of the ice sheet. Some of that water drains to the bottom of the ice sheet, falling through cracks and large fractures that form in the ice with movement and stress.

That meltwater contributes to more melting at the bottom of the ice sheet, which in turn promotes faster flow and increases the quantity of ice discharged into the ocean.

The study, published in the journal Nature Communications on Monday, says that 3.5 trillion tonnes of Greenland's ice sheet melted from 2011 to 2020.

Researchers from the University of Leeds Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling in Northern England found that it is melting at an exceptional rate, increasing 21 per cent in the past 40 years.

"Observations show that extreme melt events in Greenland have become more frequent and more intense—as well as more erratic—which is a global problem," Lin Gilbert, co-author of the study, said in a statement.

The team used satellite data from the European Space Agency to estimate the elevation of the ice sheet.

It's a method that has previously been used on floating ice sheets around Antarctica.

They found that from 2011 to 2020, the runoff from Greenland's ice sheet averaged about 357 billion tonnes a year.

New data released by Danish researchers suggest that Greenland's ice sheet has lost an immense level of ice in the past 20 years, enough to submerge the entire United States in half a metre of water.

Climate Change is pushing Greenland over the edge. As the planet grows warmer, the volume of Greenland's ice sheet is growing smaller every year.

Scientists have found evidence of an extreme solar 'tsunami' deep within the Earth's ice through analyses of ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica.

The study, conducted by a research team led by Lund University in Sweden, has been published in Nature Communications.

The sun, essentially a hot ball of hydrogen and helium, is an average-sized star that formed more than 4.5 billion years ago and is roughly halfway through its lifespan. Its diameter is about 864,000 miles (1.4 million km). Its surface temperature is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius).

When there is strong activity on the surface of the sun, more energy is released, something that can give rise to geomagnetic storms. This in turn can cause power outages and communication disturbances.

“We have studied drill cores from Greenland and Antarctica, and discovered traces of a massive solar storm that hit Earth during one of the sun's passive phases about 9,200 years ago”, says Raimund Muscheler, geology researcher at Lund University.

Solar flares are intense, short-lived releases of energy. They show up as bright areas on the sun, producing high levels of radiation and charged particles that can intensify solar winds, electrically charged particles continuously spewing outward from the sun.

The Earth’s magnetic field largely protects the planet from space weather. But massive solar flares can disrupt power grids, interfere with high-frequency airline and military communications, disrupt Global Positioning System signals and interrupt civilian communications, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which tracks solar flares.

The researchers scoured the drill cores for peaks of the radioactive isotopes beryllium-10 and chlorine-36. These are produced by high-energy cosmic particles that reach Earth, and can be preserved in ice and sediment.

“This is time consuming and expensive analytical work. Therefore, we were pleasantly surprised when we found such a peak, indicating a hitherto unknown giant solar storm in connection with low solar activity”, says Raimund Muscheler.

The strong geomagnetic storm is racing from the Sun toward Earth, and its expected arrival could affect power grids, airplane routes and space-based satellite navigation systems, US space weather experts said.

The storm, a big cloud of charged particles flung from the Sun at about 4.5 million miles per hour (7.2 million km per hour), was spawned by a pair of solar flares, scientists said.

“These enormous storms are currently not sufficiently included in risk assessments. It is of the utmost importance to analyse what these events could mean for today's technology and how we can protect ourselves”, concludes Raimund Muscheler.

Vikings have an aggressive image in popular perception. The warriors wearing their characteristic horned helmet really did have a fearsome reputation in northern Europe centuries ago. Their raids terrorised towns and villages.

Viking culture mainly flourished in Scandinavian countries. However, historians aren't sure about how this distict culture faded away. There are no definitive historical records.

But researchers now think that Vikings abandoned their settlements in Greenland due to rising sea levels. They reported this in recently held (December 15) American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting in New Orleans.

Vikings arrived in Greenland in the year 985. This was the medieval warm period. But climate changed in 1350 and Europe started experiencing what's called 'little ice age' that lasted well into the 19th century.

This resulted in Greenland's ice sheets expanding rapidly and sea levels rose.

But sea levels rise when the ice melts right? How can sea levels around Greenland rise when ice is being formed?

Ice sheets have massive weight. It has been seen in Greenland that when an ice sheet forms on ground, the ground gets pressed downwards due to enormous weight on it. This means the seawater gets chance to flood areas that were previously dry.

Expansion of ice sheets sounded death knell for their settlements in Greenland. The rising sea levels may have flooded towns, pastures, farms. Even the trade routes which were previously above water may have got submerged.

Vikings were a seafaring culture and hence their settlements were near the sea. It can be easily imagined that rising sea levels would have constituted a major problem for them in Greenland.

And it is perhaps why when a Norwegian missionary travelled to Greenland to spread Christianity among Viking descendants, he found ruins belonging to the culture that once mastered these seas and struck terror in hearts of its enemies.

Greenland: Promise of a brighter, greener future

The 3.5 trillion tonnes of Greenland's ice sheet that has melted over the past decade has raised global sea levels by one centimetre and is heightening worldwide flood risks, new research showed on Monday.

The ice sheet atop the world's largest island contains enough frozen water to lift oceans some six metres (20 feet) globally, and extreme melting events there have been increasing in frequency for at least 40 years.

Although it is one of the most studied places on Earth by climatologists, Monday's research is the first to use satellite data to detect Greenland ice sheet runoff.

Writing in the journal Nature Communications, researchers said that Greenland's meltwater runoff had risen by 21 percent over the past four decades.

More strikingly, the data provided by the European Space Agency showed that the ice sheet had lost 3.5 trillion tonnes of ice since 2011, producing enough water to raise oceans globally and put coastal communities at higher risk of flood events.

One-third of the ice lost in the past decade came in just two hot summers -- 2012 and 2019 -- the research showed.

The images showed significant annual variation in ice melt and, combined with temperature data, showed that heatwaves were increasingly a major cause of ice loss above and beyond global temperature rises.

In 2012, for example, when changes in atmospheric patterns caused unusually warm air to hover over the ice sheet for weeks, 527 billion tonnes of ice was lost.

Extreme Greenland ice melt raised global flood risk: Study

After striking Canada as a Category 1 hurricane and causing widespread power outages in Newfoundland, Larry is moving north toward Greenland, where residents are bracing for a hurricane season oddity: a blizzard caused by the remnants of a tropical storm.

Forecasters said the storm could bring up to 4 feet of snow in parts of the subarctic island, an event meteorologists described as rare and emblematic of a year filled with extreme weather that has been intensified by climate change.

“It was unusual in itself that Larry made landfall in the Canadian maritime,” said Ben Gelber, a meteorologist with WCMH-TV in Columbus, Ohio. “But this is extraordinary.”

Larry weakened to a post-tropical cyclone Saturday morning, but it was still racing toward Greenland at 48 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

Moving at a high latitude, Larry was expected to transition into a winter storm before hitting the island by Sunday, causing up to 18 inches of snow to fall in the eastern parts, and up to 4 feet in higher elevations, according to the weather station at the airport in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

The Hurricane Center said Larry would lose its tropical storm characteristics and then become a potent winter storm near Greenland by the end of the weekend. Gelber said the storm’s transition into extratropical status means it will have a cold core.

“It’s going to be a blizzard and bring winds of 60 to 70 mph, buffeting the coast and bringing higher gusts over the mountains,” Gelber said.

While it’s not unusual for Greenland to have blizzards, it is rare for a blizzard to occur in early September from the remnants of a hurricane.

“It’s remarkable,” Gelber said. “We’ve run out of adjectives this year.”

Several forecasters noted the storm’s transformation on Twitter or on daily forecasts, describing it as a “snow-cane.”

Just last month, it rained for the first time at the frigid high point of the Greenland ice sheet, which is 2 miles in the sky and more than 500 miles above the Arctic Circle.

The Greenland Department of Environment and Contingency Management did not return emails seeking comment Saturday.

In Newfoundland, the city of St. John’s asked residents to stay off the roads as workers assessed the damage from the storm. Tens of thousands of customers lost power in St. John’s and surrounding areas because of “severe weather conditions,” according to the Newfoundland Power website.

Visitation at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, one of the larger hospitals in the area, was suspended because of a power failure. No injuries have been reported, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the province’s police.

Various roads and parks in St. John’s were closed to allow debris to be cleared, and the St. John’s airport experienced delays Saturday morning, the Canadian Broadcasting Association reported.

Larry made landfall near South East Bight on the Burin Peninsula at 11:45 p.m. Friday, the National Hurricane Center said. Videos on Twitter showed eastern parts of Newfoundland being pelted by heavy rain as the storm neared its coastline, bringing increasingly powerful winds to the area.

In the past 70 years, only 23 hurricanes or post-tropical storms of hurricane strength have made landfall in Canada, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center.

Larry, which formed on Sept. 1, strengthened to a Category 3 storm two days later. It has has since weakened to a Category 1 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. Larry passed Bermuda Thursday but had otherwise posed little threat to land. Some meteorologists estimated Friday that the hurricane’s eye was 90 miles wide.

Although the hurricane was well east of the United States early Friday afternoon, large swells generated by the storm threatened to cause dangerous surf and rip currents along the East Coast, the National Weather Service said.

It has been a dizzying few weeks for meteorologists who have monitored several named storms that formed in quick succession, bringing stormy weather, flooding and damaging winds to parts of the United States and the Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Mindy hit the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday night, just hours after it formed in the Gulf of Mexico. It was downgraded to a tropical depression on Thursday but brought heavy rain to parts of the southeastern United States before moving into the Atlantic Ocean.

Ida battered Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane on Aug. 29 before its remnants brought deadly flooding to the New York area. Two other tropical storms, Julian and Kate, both fizzled out within a day.

Not long before them, in mid-August, Tropical Storm Fred made landfall in the Florida Panhandle and Hurricane Grace hit Haiti and Mexico. Tropical Storm Henri knocked out power and brought record rainfall to the northeastern United States on Aug. 22.

The quick succession of named storms might make it seem as if the Atlantic is spinning them up like a fast-paced conveyor belt, but their formation coincides with the peak of hurricane season.

The links between hurricanes and climate change are becoming more apparent. A warming planet can expect stronger hurricanes over time, and a higher incidence of the most powerful storms — though the overall number of storms could drop, because factors like stronger wind shear could keep weaker storms from forming.

Hurricanes are also becoming wetter because of more water vapor in the warmer atmosphere; scientists have suggested storms like Hurricane Harvey in 2017 produced far more rain than they would have without the human effects on climate. Also, rising sea levels are contributing to higher storm surge — the most destructive element of tropical cyclones.

Ana became the first named storm of the season on May 23, making this the seventh year in a row that a named storm developed in the Atlantic before the official start of the hurricane season on June 1.

In May, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast that there would be 13 to 20 named storms this year, six to 10 of which would be hurricanes, including three to five major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher in the Atlantic.

NOAA updated its forecast in early August, predicting 15 to 21 named storms, including seven to 10 hurricanes, by the end of the season on Nov. 30.

Last year, there were 30 named storms, including six major hurricanes, forcing meteorologists to exhaust the alphabet for the second time and move to using Greek letters.

It was the most named storms on record, surpassing the 28 from 2005, and the second-highest number of hurricanes.

“But this is extraordinary.” Larry weakened to a post-tropical cyclone Saturday morning, but it was still racing toward Greenland at 48 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. “We’ve run out of adjectives this year.” Several forecasters noted the storm’s transformation on Twitter or on daily forecasts, describing it as a “snow-cane.” Just last month, it rained for the first time at the frigid high point of the Greenland ice sheet, which is 2 miles in the sky and more than 500 miles above the Arctic Circle. Hurricane Larry to bring heavy snow to Greenland

Rain poured on the highest point of the Greenland ice sheet for the first time in recorded history in August.

It didn't even make the news.

However, rain in a country known for its severe cold foreshadows a future that would alter global coastlines and submerge entire towns.

The US Snow and Ice Data Center stated that rain was seen for many hours on August 14 at a measurement site more than 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) above the sheet.

"This is an extreme event as it may never have happened before. This is probably a sign of global warming.," Martin Stendel, a researcher at the Danish Meteorological Institute, said.

Only nine times in the past 2,000 years have temperatures at the pinnacle of the sheet reached above freezing. Three of those incidents have occurred in the last ten years, although there was no rain on the prior two occasions, in 2012 and 2019, he said.

Temperatures must be above or just below zero degrees Celsius for the rain to fall, indicating the danger that rising temperatures pose to the world's second-largest ice sheet, behind Antarctica.

Outside of Antarctica, the Greenland ice sheet has four times the amount of ice as all other glaciers and ice fields combined.

Greenland, the world's largest island, is more than 36,000 times the size of Manhattan and is covered in ice that is thousands of feet thick in many areas.

The ice sheet disintegrates as carbon dioxide and methane collect in our atmosphere, causing our planet to heat (the last six years have been the warmest on record).

In the last decade, Greenland has lost more ice than it did in the previous century.

In a paper published two years ago in Nature, a respected scientific publication, a group of climate scientists estimated that if Greenland continues to melt, tens of millions of people might face annual floods and displacement by 2030 – less than nine years from now.

By the end of the century, when Antarctica, which has far more ice than Greenland, begins a phase of catastrophic melting, the number of people at risk of flooding might have risen to about half a billion.

Experts warn first-ever rain in Greenland ice sheet shows risks of climate change

Scientists last month set foot on a tiny island off the coast of Greenland which they say is the world`s northernmost point of land and was revealed by shifting pack ice.

The discovery comes as a battle is looming among Arctic nations the United States, Russia, Canada, Denmark and Norway for control of the North Pole some 700 km (435 miles) to the north and of the surrounding seabed, fishing rights and shipping routes exposed by melting ice due to climate change.

"It was not our intention to discover a new island," polar explorer and head of the Arctic Station research facility in Greenland, Morten Rasch, told Reuters. "We just went there to collect samples."
The scientists initially thought they had arrived at Oodaaq, an island discovered by a Danish survey team in 1978. Only later, when checking the exact location, they realized they had visited another island 780 metres northwest.

"Everybody was happy that we found what we thought was Oodaaq island," said Swiss entrepreneur Christiane Leister, creator of the Leister Foundation that financed the expedition.

"It`s a bit like explorers in the past, who thought they`d landed in a certain place but actually found a totally different place."

The small island, measuring roughly 30 metres across and a peak of about three metres, consists of seabed mud as well as moraine - soil and rock left behind by moving glaciers. The team said they would recommend it is named "Qeqertaq Avannarleq", which means "the northernmost island" in Greenlandic.

Several U.S. expeditions in the area have in recent decades searched for the world`s northernmost island. In 2007, Arctic veteran Dennis Schmitt discovered a similar island close by.

Though it was exposed by shifting pack ice, the scientists said the island`s appearance now was not a direct consequence of global warming, which has been shrinking Greenland`s ice sheet.

Rene Forsberg, professor and head of geodynamics at Denmark`s National Space Institute, said the area north of Greenland has some of the thicket polar sea ice, though he added it was now 2-3 metres thick in summer, compared with 4 metres when he first visited as part of the expedition that discovered Oodaaq in 1978.

Any hope of extending territorial claims in the Arctic depends on whether it is in fact an island or a bank that may disappear again. An island need to remain above sea level at high tide.

"It meets the criteria of an island," said Forsberg. "This is currently the world`s northernmost land."

But Forsberg, an advisor to the Danish government, said it was unlikely to change Denmark`s territorial claim north of Greenland.

"These small island come and go," he said.

The discovery was first reported earlier on Friday by Danish newspaper Weekendavisen.

Global warming and the buzz around it is not new. But when we get constant reminders how it is affecting our planet, it becomes a scary thing. Nature itself sends these reminders our way. Sometimes they are in the form of tornados or melting ice caps.

Rain is generally a good thing. But when it rains where it usually should snow, alarm bells ring. At the summit of Greenland, it rained for the first time on record. The precipitation at the summit is usually in the form of snow. But thanks to global warming, another warning has come our way. The rain means that Greenland is warming up fast.

As per a report on CNN, temperature at the summit rose above the freezing point for just third time in the decade. The warm air fuelled the extreme rain event. This resulted in 7 billion tons of water falling in the form of rain. The report quotes a scientist as saying that this was "unprecedented"

A major United Nations climate report released earlier this month that Greenland's ice has been melting for the last two decades because of burning of fossil fuels.

Global warming is not an unknown concept even to the masses now. Its effect on ice-sheets in Earth's polar regions is well known. The Arctic is already warming up three times faster than other regions in the world. And now another news can make all of us rethink our priorities.

On Tuesday (July 27), a massive amount of ice melted in Greenland. It was so much, that the whole state of Florida in the US can be submerged in two-inch layer of water!

To put things in perspective, Florida spans more than 60,000 sq miles!

The disturbing fact has been shared by Polar Portal. It represents Danish Arctic research institutions studying ice sheets and sea ice in Greenland.

The melting of ice is a worrying sign as Greenland alone has an ice cover that would raise global sea levels by 23 feet.

The US wants to strengthen its relationship with Greenland, especially commercially, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday, but stressed that they, unlike Donald Trump, don't want to buy it.

Blinken visited the Danish autonomous territory as he ended a four-day trip that included a meeting of the foreign ministers of countries bordering the Arctic in Reykjavik.

"I am in Greenland because the United States deeply values our partnership and wants to make it even stronger," Antony Blinken told reporters on his final stop of the Arctic tour.

Last year, the US reopened a consulate in Greenland's capital Nuuk and pledged $12 million in aid for civilian projects.

While he spoke of potential additional funding, Blinken was vague about new US projects, even though the new Greenlandic local government had floated the idea of a free trade agreement earlier in the week.

The then US president Donald Trump's 2019 proposal to buy the Arctic territory, described as "absurd" by the Danish government, caused a diplomatic kerfuffle but meanwhile signalled in clear terms the US' renewed interest in the region.

US wants 'stronger' ties with Greenland without buying it, assures Blinken

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed Thursday that the United States was no longer interested in buying Greenland, scuttling for good a quixotic 2019 proposal by the Trump administration to annex the self-governing Danish territory.

“I can confirm that’s correct,” Blinken said during an appearance in Greenland with Danish officials and the premier of Greenland, Mute Egede, in response to a reporter who asked him to “definitively say that the United States does not seek to buy Greenland.” Earlier in the day, the secretary of state toured the territory and met privately with the premier to discuss “bilateral trade and investment.”

Blinken’s brief remarks closed the book on a bizarre episode in U.S. foreign policy. The Wall Street Journal had first reported in August 2019 that President Donald Trump had repeatedly asked aides to pursue a purchase of Greenland, in part to exploit the territory’s abundant natural resources. Trump’s advisers were highly sceptical of the idea but agreed to investigate the matter.

News of Trump’s interest in annexing Greenland quickly became the butt of jokes online while receiving a cold reception both from residents of the semiautonomous territory and among Danish leadership, who took umbrage at the then-president’s suggestion that the territory could be bought as, essentially, “a large real estate deal.”

“Greenland is not for sale,” Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark, told a Danish newspaper at the time. “Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously.”

Trump, angered at the Danish response to his idea, abruptly cancelled a diplomatic visit to Denmark and described Frederiksen as “nasty,” sparking an international incident.

“All they had to do is say, ‘No, we’d rather not do that or ‘We’d rather not talk about it,’” Trump said to reporters on the day he cancelled the trip. “Don’t say, ‘What an absurd idea that is.’”

Pele Broberg, Greenland’s foreign minister, alluded to the diplomatic rupture during his appearance with Blinken on Thursday.

“We will underscore this is not considered a real estate deal,” Broberg said of talks with U.S. officials, quoting Trump. “Secretary Blinken has made it very clear that he is here for the people living in the Arctic, for the people living in Greenland.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed Thursday that the United States was no longer interested in buying Greenland, scuttling for good a quixotic 2019 proposal by the Trump administration to annex the self-governing Danish territory.
