"This is not a question of returning artefacts… this is not an ownership question, this is a reunification argument. Where can you best appreciate what is essentially one monument? It’s as if I had told you had cut the Mona Lisa in half and you would have half of it at the Louvre and half of it at the British Museum," the Greek Prime Minister said.&nbsp;

The Greek media reported that Prime Minister Mitsotakis was going to raise the issue of the return of Parthenon sculptures back to Greece with his British counterpart.

Sunak, in a parliamentary statement, said: "It was clear that the purpose of the meeting was not to discuss substantive issues for the future, but rather to grandstand and relitigate issues of the past."

The frustration in and beyond the Greek capital Athens over what they called Sunak's 'insult' to the 'greatness of Greek culture' became a rallying point this week for the return of artefacts stolen during the era of British imperial exploitation in past centuries.

The Parthenon sculptures have been on display at the British museum since 1817 when they were sold to the London-based establishment.&nbsp;

They were removed from the Acropolis in Athens by agents of the 7th Earl of Elgin who had been the British ambassador to Constantinople -- then the capital of the Ottoman Empire -- at the start of the 19th century, when Greece was controlled by the Ottomans.

It's not that negotiations have not been initiated by Athens for the return of a crucial Greek symbol of the ancient city-state of Athens, which is often considered the birthplace of Western civilisation.

But nothing has moved beyond symbolic progress.

Last year, the chair of the British Museum, George Osborne, said that there is a "deal to be done" over sharing the Parthenon Marbles with Greece.&nbsp;

Despite a calming of the current London-Athens row over Parthenon sculptures, Greece has vowed to intensify its campaign for the reunification of these marbles amid Britain's reluctance.

The Capitals: Athens renews campaign to get back stolen pieces of Greek history

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday (Nov 29) dubbed the cancellation of his meeting with British counterpart Rishi Sunak over the Parthenon marbles as an "unfortunate event". However, he stated that this would not affect the relations between Greece and Britain in the long run.

In a meeting with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Mitsotakis, reflecting on the "positive side" of the issue said that it gave him the opportunity to further underline Greece’s request for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

He then said that the Greek-British relations have had a deep, significant, history.&nbsp;

“I returned yesterday from London. Just two words about the unfortunate event of the cancellation of my programmed meeting with my British counterpart. My first observation is that I believe it will not affect Greek-British relations in the long run, which are already relations that have a deep, significant, history," Mitsotakis said.&nbsp;

"And secondly, the cancellation of this meeting had a positive side, in that the fair request by Greece for the re-unification of the Parthenon marbles gained even greater publicity, not only in the United Kingdom but also in global public opinion,” he added.

Sakellaropoulou said the re-unification of the marbles had uncovered recognition in British as well as international public opinion, however, she said that some issues could not be solved ‘automatically’ and required time.

“We all followed the developments in London, what I find significant is that the Parthenon is a symbol not only of the Classical period but is also important for global cultural heritage, as the symbol of democracy and philosophy," she said.&nbsp;

Thus the re-unification of the marbles, which is a request by our country that goes back perhaps as early as the creation of the state - but of course the last years it has progressed - has found recognition and understanding from public opinion, international public opinion, British public opinion, and that may be the great profit, because there are some issues that cannot be solved automatically, they need their time. With that in mind we can hope that the just request of our country will find a response quickly,” she further added.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled his Tuesday's meeting with Mitsotakis after his office released a statement saying that both sides had previously decided that it should not be used as a public platform "to relitigate long, long settled matters."

"It's simply the case that if assurances are given and they're not adhered to, there are consequences for that," Sunak's spokesman told reporters.

Greece has repeatedly urged the British Museum to send back the 2,500-year-old sculptures that were removed by British diplomat Lord Elgin from the Parthenon temple in the early 19th century. During this period, Greece was under Ottoman Turkish rule.

A Downing Street spokesperson said "The UK-Greece relationship is hugely important", citing joint work within NATO and "tackling shared challenges like illegal migration" and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

"The deputy prime minister was available to meet with the Greek PM to discuss these important issues," the spokesperson added, without referencing the marbles issue.

<h2>Sculptures of the Parthenon&nbsp;</h2>

The sculptures were taken from the Parthenon temple at the Acropolis in Greece in the early 19th century by the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, then ruling Greece, Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin. For a very long time, Athens has campaigned for their return. The main sculptural decorations of the Parthenon include the Chryselephantine statue of Athena, the East and West pediments, the metopes of the peristyle, and the continuous frieze of the cellar. The sculptures were exhibited on the exterior of the temple.&nbsp;

As defined by AncientGreece.org, the pediments of the Parthenon were decorated with elaborate marble statues dedicated to mythological aspects of Athena. The report stated that the huge sculptures were arranged in dynamic compositions in order to fill the confined triangular spaces. However, the sculptures of the pediments (aetomata) were reported to be damaged severely when the Parthenon was converted to a Christian church.&nbsp;

Notably, Athens claims that the marble was stolen, however, Britain denies it. The issue remains to be discussed with an aim to arrive at a consensus and has been a source of contention between the countries for decades.&nbsp;

The Acropolis Museum was built by Greece in 2009 to keep the historic sculptures that remained in the country, along with other artefacts. The Greeks wanted the rest of the sculptures&nbsp;to complete the collection.&nbsp;

UK-based media reports said that Mitsotakis had said that he would raise the issue with Sunak during the now-cancelled meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;His remarks came after he met with the Labour leader Keir Starmer. As reported by The Financial Times, Starmer said he would not block a "mutually acceptable" loan deal between both countries for the sculptures. An important point - Starmer represents the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, where the British Museum is located.&nbsp;

Earlier this year in March, Sunak ruled out any change to a law that stops the British Museum from handing the marble back to Greece permanently. Sunak's spokesman said earlier Monday that the UK has "no plans" to facilitate their return to Athens.&nbsp;

However, it can happen as the legislation won't deny a loan.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Dr Karsten Haustein, a climate scientist at Leipzig University told UK newspaper the Guardian: "While no formal attribution of the role of climate change in making Storm Daniel more intense has been conducted yet, it is safe to say that the Mediterranean sea surface temperatures have been considerably above average throughout summer."&nbsp;

'Beach towel revolt' sweeps Greece as locals reclaim their beaches from wealthy tourists

Hundreds of people have been killed after Storm Daniel swept through the Mediterranean over the weekend, bringing strong winds and heavy floods to several countries, including Libya, over the past two days. The death toll was not immediately clear amid conflict reports ranging from hundreds to thousands of people, said a report by Reuters, on Monday (September 11) citing senior officials.&nbsp;

The storm in question also brought torrential rains and wreaked havoc in Turkey, Bulgaria and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/greece-at-least-15-killed-after-storm-daniel-brings-most-intense-rainstorms-since-1930-634668">Greece</a>.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims</h2>

According to the head of the eastern Libyan government, Osama Hamad, more than 2,000 people have died in the coastal city of Derna and thousands of others were reported to be missing.&nbsp;

However, he did not give a source for his data and the figures could not be verified independently since the country is politically split east and west with two rival administrations in charge and crumbling public services since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising.

Hamad is the head of the government which is not internationally recognised and operates in the eastern regions of the country that are controlled by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).&nbsp;

The head of the Red Crescent aid group in the region said Derna’s death toll was expected to rise. “We recorded at least 150 deaths (in Derna) after the collapse of buildings. We expect death toll to rise to 250. The situation is very catastrophic,” Red Crescent’s Kais Fhakeri told Reuters.&nbsp;

Mohamed Massoud, a spokesman for the Benghazi-based administration in Libya, said that at least 150 people have been killed due to “flooding and torrential rains left by storm Daniel in Derna, Jabal al-Akhdar region and the suburbs of Al-Marj,” as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

Massoud said that hundreds of residents are said to be trapped and rescuers, backed by the army, are trying to come to their aid. He added that the east Libyan authorities had “lost contact with nine soldiers during rescue operations”.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the damage?</h2>

Reports citing images and videos by residents in the flood-stricken areas said that parts of the country are witnessing swamping roads and some buildings were also destroyed in Derna. The storm also swept through other settlements along the coast, including Libya’s second-biggest city of Benghazi.

Some images also show massive mudslides, collapsed buildings and entire neighbourhoods submerged under muddy water, reported AFP. Images posted by Almostkbal TV show a collapsed road between Sousse and Shahat, home to the Greek-founded and UNESCO-listed archaeological site Cyrene.

“Entire neighbourhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents...swept away by water,” Hamad told al-Masar TV.&nbsp;

Derna resident Saleh al-Obaidi told Reuters how he managed to flee with his family after houses in a valley near the city had collapsed. “People were asleep and woke up and found their homes surrounded by water,” he added.&nbsp;

Reuters citing witnesses said that the water level in Derna had reached three metres (10 feet).&nbsp;

<h2>Officials respond to disaster</h2>

Libya’s eastern-based parliament declared three days of mourning after the disaster. Reuters citing witnesses also said that search-and-rescue operations were ongoing and the authorities have declared a state of extreme emergency, closing schools and stores and imposing a curfew.

The United Nations in Libya said it was following the storm closely and would “provide urgent relief assistance in support of response efforts at local and national levels”.&nbsp;

Greek civil protection authorities said Saturday evening that seven people were officially listed as missing, including an Austrian couple visiting the area around the picturesque peak of Pelion in the Thessaly region of northeastern Greece. &nbsp;

Several houses remain under water in the village of Palamas and rescue workers were trying to reach marooned people, an AFP journalist said.&nbsp;

"It was truly hellish," said 54-year-old Palamas resident Eleni Patouli. &nbsp;

"We were stuck without help or information for hours. The (emergency services) 112 message to evacuate arrived just as we were facing up to the flooding and we had no means of escape," she told AFP.&nbsp;

The situation also remains worrying near the city of Larissa, a few kilometres to the east.  &nbsp;

"We are having great difficulties with the Pinios river, next to the city of Larissa, which has overflowed and reached a height of 2.5 metres (eight feet) on the outskirts of Larissa," Artopios said.&nbsp;

The flooding has laid waste to thousands of hectares of rich agricultural land and farmers have also lost substantial livestock numbers.&nbsp;

'Extreme' weather event

"We are devastated. More than 1,500 pigs have drowned -- 70 percent of our farm suffered damage," said 58-year-old Thomas Kasos. &nbsp;

In the port city of Volos, the water supply has become a problem, since pumping stations and a large part of the supply network were damaged. The health ministry has warned that the water is not suitable for drinking. &nbsp;

"Gastroenteritis cases have appeared and there is a risk of that increasing if people don't have enough water. Authorities need to distribute at least two litres of drinking water to everyone," Elena Riza, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Athens School of Medicine, told public broadcaster ERT. &nbsp;

Traffic also remained challenging Saturday with the highway connecting Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city, and the capital Athens cut off in several places. &nbsp;

The storm, named "Daniel", struck the central coastal region of Magnesia on Monday and Tuesday before hitting other towns such as Karditsa and Trikala further inland on Wednesday. &nbsp;

Experts have described the event as "extreme in terms of the amount of water falling in a space of 24 hours".  &nbsp;

The heavy rains and flooding follow devastating fires in Greece this summer that killed at least 26 people.&nbsp;

As the world warms, the atmosphere contains more water vapour which increases the risk of heavy precipitation in some parts of the world, notably in Asia, Western Europe and Latin America.&nbsp;

Combined with other factors such as urbanisation and land-use planning, these more intense rainfall events contribute to flooding.&nbsp;

The storm prompted a surge in emergency service calls for water pumping, mere days after firefighters managed to bring a devastating wildfire, burning for over two weeks, under control in northern Greece.

In another incident, approximately 94 residents of a nursing home in Volos were relocated to safety after torrential rains damaged a portion of the facility.

India has been invited to be a part of the next trilateral summit involving Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.

In a joint press conference on Monday (Sept 4), Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the country is interested in natural gas exports partnership with countries such as India, who may even be invited to the next trilateral summit&nbsp;expected next year.

The summit took place in the Cypriot capital Nicosia to discuss regional energy cooperation to focus on exports to Europe, especially natural gas and renewables.

Echoing similar sentiments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked about plans to expand the 3+1 format beyond the United States and potentially include India.

“There’s something else that could develop, and we discussed it at great length,” the Israeli leader said.

“There is now the possibility that we might have the expansion of the Abraham Accords to normalisation with Saudi Arabia.”

Likewise, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said they reaffirmed “strong commitment to the 3+1 format with the United States and agreed on the value of intensifying 3+1 cooperation, with concrete deliverables also with other countries and we talked specifically about India.”

The leaders said they wanted to promote "energy synergies" such as an electricity interconnector between the three countries and a possible natural gas pipeline, according to the joint statement.

"We reaffirmed the common interest to advance prospects for a reliable energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean basin to Europe," the statement added.

Netanyahu said Israel and Cyprus were working on exporting his country's gas reserves to Europe via the island.

Later in a joint statement following the conclusion of the 9th trilateral summit, the leaders&nbsp;“agreed that the energy sector, and in particular, natural gas, electricity and renewable energy, is a solid foundation for cooperation in the region, based on international law including the law of the sea and the respect of all states to exercise their rights in their respective Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.”&nbsp;

This comes a day after officials in Greece reported that the firefighters were gaining the upper hand on a massive blaze as deadly wildfires dubbed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/greece-wildfires-dubbed-largest-ever-recorded-in-european-unions-history-630342">“largest ever”</a>&nbsp;in European Union history ravaged the country.&nbsp;

Since Monday (Sep 4), Storm Daniel has battered western and central Greece, prompting hundreds of calls to emergency services to pump out the water that caused flooding in several areas.&nbsp;

A day earlier Greek officials said they were making headway in bringing the wildfire which experts have classified as a “megafire” in Dadia National Park, also in the northern part of the country.&nbsp;

“A man died after a wall collapsed near Volos city, probably due to bad weather,” a fire brigade official told Reuters. The Athens News Agency identified the man as a cattle breeder who was trying to reach his animals.

Fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios told Skai television that a man was missing from Volos, a port city on the Pagasetic Gulf after his car was swept away by the rainstorm. “His son came out (of the car) but the father was carried away and there is a search operation under way right now,” said Artopoios.&nbsp;

Multiple cars in Volos were seen being washed away by torrential rain onto muddy shores, reported Reuters, citing footage from the state broadcaster ERT. Officials have also restricted traffic in the wider area of Volos due to the floods.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Megafire’ in northeastern Greece</h2>

The heavy rain-triggered floods were reported just days after deadly wildfires ravaged areas in northern Greece. The “megafire” blaze in Dalia has destroyed more than 81,000 hectares of the forested area, protected by the European agency Natura 2000, as of Monday (Sep 4).&nbsp;

“According to the latest information from our firefighters, the Dadia fire front is on its way to being completely under control,” said government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.&nbsp;

The European climate service Copernicus had previously said that the devastation in Dadia accounts for almost half the total area burned by wildfires in Greece since the beginning of this summer.&nbsp;
