The Greece wildfire has been declared the "largest ever" recorded in the European Union's history as the country struggles to tame the raging flames.

“This wildfire is the largest in the EU since 2000, when the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis) began recording data,” the EU’s civil protection service said on Tuesday (Aug 29).

The forest fires, which began on August 19, have burned more than 310 sq miles (810 sq km) – an area bigger than New York City, it said.&nbsp;

At least 20 people have lost their lives, 18 of them are migrants whose bodies were found in a region that is often used as an entry point from neighbouring Turkey.

Greece’s fire service told AFP news agency that the blaze was “still out of control” in the north-east region’s Dadia National Park, which is a vital sanctuary for birds of prey.

European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari has said that the bloc has mobilised almost half of its firefighting air wing to help tackle the raging forest fires, which began on August 19.

“We decided to boost cooperation in defence, security, infrastructure, education, and emerging technologies. In areas of defence and security, India and Greece have agreed on strengthening defence industrial cooperation apart from military ties,” Modi said.

“We have decided that there should be institutional India-Greece dialogue framework at the level of National Security Advisers (NSAs)…,” he said, adding that the two countries have set the target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

Both the leaders also discussed the Ukraine situation, with PM Modi asserting that “India and Greece support dialogue and diplomacy on the issue.”

"It is the combination of high temperatures, drought and winds that unfortunately create the ideal conditions for wildfires with extreme behaviour," Marinakis said.

"It is a very difficult summer."

In a post&nbsp;on social media platform X (formerly Twitter),&nbsp;Copernicus said&nbsp;that the wildfire in northeastern Greece that began on Saturday near the city of Alexandroupolis in northeastern Greece was "the largest recorded on European soil in years," burning a total of 72,344 hectares so far.

As of Friday, the fire was still burning.

Hundreds of people have had to flee their homes to escape the wildfires. Even hospital patients were briefly evacuated by a ferry earlier this week.

On Friday, authorities said that a charred body believed to be of a migrant was found in a forested area of Evros region. It is a region in northwestern part of the country.

This has brought total number of those who have been killed by the fire outbreak of the summer to 21. Almost all of them are presumed to be migrants. Eighteen bodies were found together, burnt beyond recognition, near the village of Avantas. The discovery was made on Tuesday.

<h2>79 arsonists arrested: Report</h2>

BBC has reported that Greek authorities have arrested 79 persons on the charge&nbsp;of arson related to wildfires. Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias has said that arsonists have made several attempts to start new fires.

"You are committing a crime against the country," Kikilias said in a televised emergency briefing.

"Arsonist scum are setting fires that threaten forests, property and, most of all, human lives."&nbsp;

The superb climate in our political relations is confirmed by, among others, the frequent exchange of high-level visits. During the tenure of the previous Greek government, and despite the pandemic, there have been two visits between our countries' Foreign Ministers as well as several one-on-one meetings between them at various international fora. Apart from meetings at the highest state level, consultations at a political or economic level are also ongoing. Just recently, the 13th round of Political Consultations between Greece and India was held on June 14 at the level of the Secretaries General of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs. Greece enjoys more than 250 days of sunshine and has a strong wind capacity. Therefore, our country offers significant untapped electricity generation potential. In this respect, Greece is proud to be amongst the countries that have signed and ratified the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Agreement, an initiative by India and France aimed at the deployment of solar energy technologies in order to combat climate change.

Greece can become India's gateway to Europe, says Foreign Minister Gerapetritis

At least 18&nbsp;suspected migrants were found dead on Tuesday (August 22)&nbsp;in a forest fire raging in northeastern Greece, said a&nbsp;fire department official. This comes after dozens of patients were evacuated from a hospital onto a ferry after out-of-control wildfires continued to rage near the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis for a fourth day.

The blaze also continued to spread in the Greek islands of Evia and Boeotia in central Greece, which has since prompted the evacuation&nbsp;of several villages.&nbsp;

<h2>Migrant deaths&nbsp;</h2>

Fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopios, as per AFP, said that the&nbsp;bodies were found in a rural area south of the village of Avantas in northern Greece.

"Given that there have been no reports of disappearances or missing residents from the surrounding areas, the possibility that these are people who entered the country illegally is being investigated," said the&nbsp;fire brigade official.&nbsp;

He added, "Searches throughout the entire area where the fire broke out are ongoing."&nbsp;

<h2>Hospital evacuated</h2>

A report by Reuters citing officials said that at least 65 patients had been evacuated from the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, on early Tuesday as a precaution onto a ferry &nbsp;– turned into a makeshift hospital – in the port, while others were reportedly taken to other hospitals in northern Greece.&nbsp; 
 
Firefighters have been struggling to contain the blaze that broke out near Alexandroupolis, a major port close to Greece’s north-eastern border with Turkey, on Saturday and quickly spread.

Among those evacuated were newborn babies and intensive care patients. The reports of explosions in the hospital area were blamed on oxygen bottles, reported BBC. Images and videos from near the hospital show a massive wall of flames racing through the forest towards the city.

The coast guard evacuated 14 people by sea overnight from a nearby coastal area to&nbsp;Alexandroupolis. This comes after a school, several homes and a cemetery were damaged in two villages near the port city.&nbsp;

More than 200 firefighters were battling the flames supported by four aeroplanes and three helicopters in Alexandroupolis and nearby areas, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Media reports citing officials said&nbsp;the blazes have also left two firefighters injured in northern and central Greece, as of Monday. Separately, a&nbsp;local police official told Reuters, that they found&nbsp;the burned body of a man believed to be a migrant in a rural area in Lefkimi, near Alexandroupolis.&nbsp;

While the firefighting efforts across Greece continue, the flames, fanned by gale-force winds and high temperatures, sent plumes of smoke above the city and turned the night sky bright red.&nbsp;

Wildfires were also reported on the island of Evia near Athens, as well as on the island of Kythnos and in Viotia in central Greece. Officials have also ordered evacuations near the Aspropyrgos area on the western fringes of the Greek capital, on Tuesday morning, after a new fire broke out.&nbsp;

According to a report by The New York Times on Tuesday (August 15), a phalanx of lounge chairs with red umbrellas is covering the sand on the Monastiri beach in Paros. A pair of front-row seats near the crystalline waters costs At $76 (70 euros) and less than half were taken on a recent day, the report said. Speaking to NYT, a local resident said that in some cases, the chairs covered 100 per cent of the beach. "We feel we’re being pushed off the island," the resident said and pointed out that people were being made to feel unwelcome unless they use the services of the beach bars that own the chairs. Many businesses on beaches expanding illegally While beaches are public in Greece, local authorities lease sections of them to bars, restaurants and hotels. The report said that though no more than 50 per cent of beaches are supposed to be occupied, many businesses are expanding illegally. The NYT report said that in Paros, the businesses have become predatory with up to $130 being charged for VIP sun loungers. Apart from local residents, tourists are also not happy about the proliferation of the chairs. Local residents have said that seaside businesses have left them hardly a scrap of sand on which to lay their towels. 'Towel Movement' spreading quickly The "Towel Movement" demonstrations are spreading quickly- from Paros to the nearby island of Naxos, and to other holiday spots in the north and the south of Greece. A report by the news agency Reuters on August 10 said that an investigation has been launched into the Paros case. Meanwhile, in Naxos, more than 5,000 people have joined the Facebook group "Save Naxos Beaches" which has filed a legal complaint. Eleni Andrianopoulou, the group's spokesperson, said the beaches were so full of this furniture since the beginning of the tourist season that many people didn't want to sit on a bed or in a chair they didn't have any space anymore to sit." “People started complaining, sending letters, sending complaints, filing complaints and gathering signatures but nothing happened they were not heard. The situation continued and got worse and worse and so they felt also angry and many of these angry people were going every day to the beach ready for (a) fight," Andrianopoulou added. Greek Prime Minister&nbsp;Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that tourists who were forced to escape the island of Rhodes after recent wildfires will be given a free one-week holiday there.&nbsp;

Speaking on a British morning show,&nbsp;Mitsotakis said the tourists could take up the offer in the spring or autumn of 2024. He, however, did not specify details of how the free week could be claimed, or how the logistics would work.&nbsp;

“For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty," said&nbsp;Mitsotakis on the show.&nbsp;

"Not a single human life was lost in Rhodes, and no injuries were reported... We understand that guests have been inconvenienced, but I am happy to tell you that Rhodes is more welcoming than ever. The island is back to normal."

Local people as well as tourists were forced to flee their homes and hotels during the wildfires that ravaged the island last month. As many as 20,000 tourists were rescued from danger, in what was the largest evacuation undertaken by the country.&nbsp;

Greece, whose economy has been heavily battered over the past decade, relies heavily on tourism to generate revenue. Rhodes,&nbsp;the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean, is a popular holiday spot and&nbsp;Mitsotakis wants tourism to quickly return to previous levels.

<h2>Climate change increasing the intensity of wildfires</h2>

Up until last week,&nbsp;Mitsotakis was seen warning the Greek parliament that the Mediterranean was in peril due to climate change.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"For the next few weeks, we must be on constant alert. We are at war. We will rebuild what we lost, we will compensate those who were hurt,"&nbsp;Mitsotakis told parliament, as quoted by Reuters.

"The climate crisis is already here, it will manifest itself everywhere in the Mediterranean with greater disasters," he said.

Mitsotakis mentioned that the region was always prone to wildfires, but in recent years, climate change had greatly increased the intensity of the natural calamity.&nbsp;

According to experts, the Mediterranean burning like a blowtorch may have never happened without human-induced climate change. July was recorded as the hottest month in human history, with the UN stating that the "era of global warming" was over as we had entered the era of "global boiling".&nbsp;
