Turkiye and Greece are NATO allies, but on a historic front the two have been foes. Recently, the two nations have opened diplomatic pathways for each other. Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan even hosted Greece Prime Minister Kyriako Mitsotakis.

Archaeologists claim to have uncovered Alexander the Great's bathing quarters and combat gymnasium at the Aigai Palace in the northern part of Greece.

The discovery was first revealed in the conclusive episode of the Channel 4 series “Bettany Hughes’ Treasures of the World.”

Positioned in the heart of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, the magnificent Aigai palace is spread across 15,000 square metres and exceeds even the magnificence of the Parthenon.

Constructed during Philip II's reign, the palace comprises courtyards, temples, sanctuaries, a theatre, a palaestra (boxing school), and tombs.

“There’s a significant drain carved into the rock, along with a communal bathroom. This area is believed to be where Alexander the Great would have bathed alongside his companions, including his renowned favourite, Hephaestion, and the multitude of young men who accompanied him during campaigns and later vied for control of his empire following his demise," said Bettany Hughes, host of the series, about the discovery.

Alexander’s favourite Hephaestion was also known as his second-in-command and used to also go on trips with him.

A recent report suggests that Greece is facing a significant population decline, possibly becoming the first country to experience "population collapse." This news has sparked discussions on social media, with even billionaire Elon Musk expressing worry.

The report throws light on alarming trends, citing increased mortality rates among young, healthy individuals due to conditions like heart failure, stroke, blood clots, and cancer. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described the situation as a "ticking time bomb" and a "national threat."

Reacting to the report, Elon Musk said in a post on X, "Greece is one of dozens of countries experiencing population collapse due to low birth rates."

Population collapse, also known as depopulation, describes a sudden and irreversible decrease in the number of people living in a society.

"This is one of the most serious problems we face not only in Greece but in the EU as a whole," Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis told news agency Reuters last week, referring to the rapidly declining population in his country. "It is our priority ... whatever it takes."

Greece's birth rate fell by 30 per cent from 2011 to 2021 to under 84,000 per year, slipping below the death rate, according to the country's national Hellenic Statistical Service, also known as ELSTAT.

According to a report by Al-Jazeera, this decline represents a loss of nearly 2 billion euros a year in state revenue over the long term, considering each Greek pays on average 5,758 euros ($6,125) in taxes and social security contributions.

The data further indicates that Greece's population is projected to decrease by over a million by 2050. Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated that the country effectively recorded just one birth per two deaths in 2022.

In 1932, Greece had over 185,000 births and fewer than 118,000 deaths, according to ELSTAT.

Greece prepares for ‘population collapse’ amid rising deaths, potentially 1st country to face such crisis

Greece has launched a free seven-day holiday programme for the tourists who fled Rhodes due to deadly wildfires in July 2023.

Over 25,000 tourists, mainly from Britain, who were evacuated from their hotels during the fires, are eligible for the latest compensation scheme by the government.

Under this initiative, those particular individuals can avail their e-vouchers worth 536.58 USD (€500).

The vouchers can be used to cover the cost of accommodation for a week-long stay in the country.

The programme is set to be executed in two phases, i.e. an initial phase that will run till May 31 starting from now, and a second phase that will run until Nov 15 starting from Oct 1.

“The scheme is up and running as the prime minister promised,” the Greek tourism ministry’s general secretary, Myron Flouris, told the Guardian. “It’s been a very complicated process not least, I think, because we’re the first country in the world to do this.”

Over 5,000 travellers have already signed up for this programme, as per reports.

“Anyone who was staying in areas that were affected by the fires is eligible,” said Yannis Papavasiliou, the head of the island’s union of hoteliers.

“The response has been very good and we are told will be even stronger come the autumn,” he said.

“It will apply only to hotels, not Airbnb-style private accommodation. At the end of the day, Greece is making good on its promise to recompense all those who lost their holidays because of climate change,” he added.

Last year in the month of August, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the tourists who were forced to escape the island due to the wildfires would be given a free one-week holiday.

Speaking on a British morning show, Mitsotakis said the tourists could take up the offer in the spring or autumn of 2024.

“For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty," Mitsotakis said.

"Not a single human life was lost in Rhodes, and no injuries were reported... We understand that guests have been inconvenienced, but I am happy to tell you that Rhodes is more welcoming than ever. The island is back to normal."

Local people as well as tourists were forced to flee their homes and hotels during the wildfires that ravaged the island in July 2023.

As many as 20,000 tourists were rescued from danger in what was the largest evacuation undertaken by the country.

Greece, whose economy has been heavily battered over the past decade, relies heavily on tourism to generate revenue. Rhodes, the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean, is a popular holiday spot and Mitsotakis wants tourism to quickly return to previous levels.

The Greek Orthodox church has erupted in outrage over the government's decision to legalise same-sex marriage, calling it "demonic." This move has sparked intensified protests from clerics, who demand punitive actions against the lawmakers who supported this groundbreaking legislation.

Clerics are urging for the ostracism of what they deem as "immoral lawmakers" from the church. Authorities in Corfu have even taken steps to ban two local MPs from participating in any religious ceremonies. These measures come as a response to what the bishopric of the island perceives as a grave spiritual and moral transgression.

Exclusion from religious rites

The bishopric of Corfu has explicitly stated that the two deputies who supported the same-sex marriage bill cannot be considered active members of the church.

Unless they repent for their actions, they face exclusion from crucial church practices, including communion and other religious events.

Greece made history by becoming the first Orthodox Christian nation to pass legislation allowing same-sex marriage.

This landmark move, supported by 175 MPs from diverse political backgrounds, signifies a significant shift in societal norms.

Despite facing criticism from religious authorities, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis backed the law, which also expanded parental rights for gay couples.

Opposition from the orthodox church

The Orthodox Church, led by Archbishop Ieronymos, strongly opposed the legislation, denouncing it as "pure evil."

Suggestions were made for a popular referendum on the issue, reflecting the church's discontent with the government's decision. Concerns were raised about potential societal ramifications, with leading church figures fearing the erosion of traditional family values.

Church-government standoff

Tensions between the church and government escalated, with the Holy Synod, the church's governing body, announcing symbolic gestures of dissent.

The decision to move Orthodox Sunday service away from the capital's cathedral and the refusal to attend a meal with the president signal a growing rift. Archbishop Ieronymos expressed distress over the president's participation in a celebratory dinner after the legislation's passing.

Church bells tolled, a 24-hour strike halted rail services, and tens of thousands of workers and students marched through the Greek capital city of Athens, on Wednesday (Feb 28) to mark the anniversary of the country’s deadliest train crash which killed 57 people and injured dozens more.

Protesters demand justice for victims

More than 30,000 striking Greek workers and students took to the streets in Athens while a 24-hour strike halted rail services across the country and disrupted urban transport in the Greek capital to commemorate the head-on collision on February 28, 2023.

The protesters demanded justice and bigger pay raises as they blamed official failings and an unsafe rail system for the deadly incident. “We don’t forget, we demand justice,” read the banner of those who marched in Athens.

A year ago, a passenger train from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki collided head-on with a freight train. The collision led to the death of 57 people, many of them young students returning home after a long weekend.

The collision, which many see as the result of government neglect of railway safety systems and protocols despite years of warnings from rail workers, led to days of mass and often violent protests.

Churches across the country rang their bells 57 times, on Wednesday to represent the number of those killed.

24-hour strike

The strike on Wednesday was called by Greece’s largest public-sector union ADEDY which represents around half a million workers.

However, over the day, many others, including students joined the march and wrote the names of the people who lost their lives in front of the heavily guarded parliament.

Brief clashes were also reported between police and protesters in Athens and during a similar protest in Thessaloniki.

The union workers, including air traffic controllers, taxi drivers and public transport workers, were also protesting against what they said were insufficient pay rises, the first after 14 years in the public sector.

They said that the increases were not enough to offset the impact of rising living costs and called for a 10 per cent across-the-board hike.

‘Day of pain’

“Today is a day of pain,” Antonis Psaropoulos, whose 19-year-old daughter Marthi died in the collision, told AFP. “For all of us, time stopped on February 28, 2023, a cursed day... a black hole in time,” Psaropoulos added.

A memorial service was also held at the crash site in the valley of Tempe, which is around 273 kilometres from Athens where grieving families of the victims and survivors left wreaths and flowers. “Fifty seven souls want justice,” read a placard at the ceremony.

‘National trauma’

Greece: Church bells, 24-hour strike and protests mark a year since country’s worst train crash

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, in an exclusive interview with WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Siddhant Sibbal, commented on Indo-Greek ties, which in reality go back centuries. But in the modern sense, the foreign minister said, Greece wanted to be India's gateway into Europe. During the interaction on the sidelines of Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis spoke about many aspects of relations between the two countries and also the bearing India has on world affairs.

WION: How to do you see India-Greece relationship?

Gerapetritis: We are two nations with great history, we are nations that are based on principles, we share common things...We have upgraded our relations to a strategic one. There is a huge upside when it comes to economic and cultural ties with India. India is the fifth largest economy... We expect for significant upgrade in bilateral ties. We have more than 100 businesspeople in India and they have the opportunity to interact with Indian entrepreneurs in various sectors. There is an excellent opportunity for nations to develop.

WION: If you can comment on India-Middle East-Europe corridor?

Gerapetritis: We need to work closely...we consider that the IMEEC is not only an economic corridor but also a corridor of peace and culture. People-to-people relationship is the main important thing. This corridor takes us back to history. The corridor facilitates interconnection between India, the Arabic states and Europe in every aspect. Greece possesses very strong ports. This could save more than seven days of the trip. We have strong data transfer facilities. We have become an energy hub, a pioneer state when it comes to green transition. We’re concerned about with climate crisis. We have taken significant steps. We are in the process of developing connectivity with Egypt and central and northern Europe. The IMEEC connection will be a strong tie of friendship and peace.

WION: Do you think the IMEEC project is being impacted by the ongoing Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine conflicts? Will it lead to delay in the project?

Gerapetritis: The situation is appalling. We need to take significant steps to stop it and allow humanitarian aid. When it comes to connectivity projects, there could be some delays...this is a visionary project. We will lay down the next steps for the IMEEC project but will be taking other economic and cultural steps as well. The two governments are going to have a very close relationship. We have MoUs and agreements to follow up on. And we have established a multi-layer approach.

Greece wants to be the gateway of India into Europe. It is very significant. We made some progress in discussions concerning the use of Greek ports. India is already present in Greece with some significant projects. We consider these pioneers of huge investment opportunities for India.

WION: How do you see India when it comes to multilateralism?

Gerapetritis: Democratic values should be embedded in all international arenas. India is leading in this aspect. India connects the south, north, west and east and could be a focal point when it comes to international discussions. India presents a model of economy which is an important one. India has an active role.

Greece has become the first Orthodox Christian country to legalise same-sex marriage despite opposition from the church and some politicians. Watch in for more details!

Greece becomes first Orthodox Christian country to legalise same-sex marriage

Greek lawmakers on Thursday legalise same-sex marriages in the country. Greece is now the first Orthodox Christian country to have a law that will also guarantee equal parenting rights for same-sex couples. Take a look.

Win for LGBTQIA+ supporters as Greece legalises same-sex marriage

In a historic decision, the Greek parliament on Thursday (Feb 15) passed a law which legalised same-sex marriage and made it the first majority Orthodox Christian country where marriage equality for all has been established.

In spite of opposition from Orthodox Christian clergy and conservative segments of society, the decision received the support of 176 out of 300 lawmakers in the parliament. The bill introduced by the centre-right government was opposed by 76 lawmakers, after months of polarised political and public discourse.

The country’s LGBTQ+ couples welcomed the parliament's decision as the onlookers in parliament cheered and dozens celebrated on the streets of Athens.

“This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece - a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values,” said Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a post on X after the voting.

"People who have been invisible will finally be made visible around us, and with them, many children will finally find their rightful place," said the prime minister in the parliament, ahead of the vote.

"The reform makes the lives of several of our fellow citizens better, without taking away anything from the lives of the many,” he added.

The historic law has given the right to wed and adopt children to same-sex couples, decades after the LGBT community campaigned for marriage equality in the socially conservative country.

Even though civil partnerships for gay couples were introduced by Greece nearly a decade ago under the left-wing Syriza government, the government recognised only the biological parents of children in those relationships as legal guardians.

However, as per the new law, same-sex parents can now be recognised as legal parents of the children.

"This is a historic moment," said Stella Belia, the head of same-sex parents group Rainbow Families, while speaking to Reuters news agency. "This is a day of joy,” she added.

LGBT communities rallied outside parliament and one of the banners read: "Not a step back from real equality."

"I'm very proud as a Greek citizen because Greece is actually - now - one of the most progressive countries," said Ermina Papadima, who is a member of the Greek Transgender Support Association.

"I think the mindset is going to change... We have to wait, but I think the laws are going to help with that,” she added.

Celebrating the law, many people sang passages from the Bible, read prayers, held crosses and displayed banners in the capital's Syntagma Square.

However, the head of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop Ieronymos, said that the measure would "corrupt the homeland's social cohesion".

Greece Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said that the country is willing to part with some of its greatest treasures so as to “fill the void” present in the British Museum if they are handed over the Parthenon marbles.

While speaking to the Guardian at the end of the year which marked their campaign for retrieving the fifth-century BC masterpieces, Mendoni vowed that the revered Greek galleries of London institution will never go empty.

“Our position is clear. Should the sculptures be reunited in Athens, Greece is prepared to organise rotating exhibitions of important antiquities that would fill the void,” she said.

Speaking about any particular works which have been requested by London, the minister - who is a classical archaeologist by training - said that the discussions between the two countries have not extended to “specific artefacts”.

However, the minister for the first time gave a glimpse of how far Athens was willing to compensate to the British Museum in return for the sculptures - which are seen as a high point of art in the classical age – adding that any antiquities sent to the UK will also attract a lot of attention.

“[They] would fill the void, maintain, and constantly renew, international visitor interest in the Greek galleries of the British Museum,” said Mendoni, although she cautioned that “any agreement and all its particulars, would have to be in accordance with the Greek law on cultural heritage”.

UK, Greece discuss cultural exchange

Although the plan of cultural exchange was mooted after Greece Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis' centre-right New Democracy party came to power in 2019, there have been speculations that treasures, which include Agamemnon’s Mask – the gold funerary mask which has been called the “Mona Lisa of prehistory” by some historians - will be sent to Britain in return for the marbles.

Currently, the two sides have started to speak about “a partnership” which can offer a “win-win” solution in resolving the row. British Museum’s chair George Osborne, while speaking about the steps taken by Athens to reunite the marbles, appeared more determined to handle the issue head-on compared to any of his predecessors.

In 1816, the marbles were bought by the museum from a bankrupt Lord Elgin, who was a former ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Lord Elgin had himself got the marbles removed from the Parthenon temple and other places on Athens’ Acropolis with the use of marble saws.

This year, the former chancellor has more than once hinted that a compromise settlement is likely to be in the offing. “We want to create a proper partnership,” said Osborne, while speaking to MPs on the culture, media and sport committee in October. “[One] that would mean objects from Greece coming here, objects that have potentially never left Greece before and certainly never been seen before, and objects from the Parthenon collection potentially travelling to Greece," he added.

Great Greek compromise for Parthenon marbles? Athens agrees to give away its ‘greatest treasures’ to Britain

In a significant stride towards economic recovery, greece has given the green light to its 2024 budget. With a forecasted surge in growth fueled by robust tourist revenues and crucial eu funds, the nation aims to achieve a 2.9% economic upswing.

Greece's journey from debt crisis to investment-grade status

Greece has approved its 2024 budget, anticipating a boost in economic growth to 2.9 per cent from this year's 2.4 per cent, propelled by robust tourist revenues and increased EU funds for investment.

According to Reuters, the approval, backed by 158 votes, reflects the majority support from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's conservative government in the 300-seat house.

The Greek government, aiming to strengthen its financial position, sets a target of a 2.1 per cent primary budget surplus next year, an increase from the 1.1 per cent surplus recorded in the current fiscal year. The nation, once the most indebted in the euro zone, has seen a robust recovery since emerging from international bailouts in 2018, culminating in the restoration of its investment-grade status in 2023 after a 13-year hiatus.

The 2024 budget allocates 1.4 billion euros to enhance income, including the long-awaited pay raises for civil servants, marking the first increase since 2010.

According to the Associated Press, Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed optimism, aiming for a 3 per cent economic growth based on the anticipated increase in investment spending. The forecasted GDP, adjusted for inflation, is expected to surpass 200 billion euros, a notable achievement since 2010.

Mitsotakis addressed concerns over inflation, projecting an average of 2.8 per cent and allocating approximately 2.5 billion euros in subsidies to mitigate the impact on lower incomes, especially with soaring electricity prices.

Despite the positive projections, Mitsotakis acknowledged persistent challenges, emphasising the need for bolder and deeper reforms to address structural weaknesses in the economy. The minimum wage is set to rise for the fourth time in three years in April, aiming to counter opposition claims of a job market dominated by low-paying precarious positions. Furthermore, civil servants, numbering 660,000, are set to witness real pay hikes in January, the first in 14 years.

WION Business Wrap | Chinese semiconductor firms, Greece’s 2024 budget, Business travel emissions & more

In a shocking revelation, Greece emerges as an unexpected hub for covert oil trading activities, defying Western sanctions against Russia.

According to Bloomberg, two aging oil tankers, the Turba and Simba, were recently caught on camera engaging in suspicious ship-to-ship fuel transfers off the Greek coast, these vessels, sailing under a flag deemed "very high risk", are part of a vast shadow fleet responsible for handling approximately 45 per cent of Russia's oil shipments this year.

The Greek-owned vessels, operating under the $60 per barrel price cap imposed by sanctions, handled more of Moscow's oil than those of any other individual country except Russia itself.

Sanctions intended to constrain, but profits escalate

The Western sanctions, designed to cut funding for Russia's military assault on Ukraine, included a $60 per barrel price cap for seaborne Russian oil. However, rather than achieving its intended goal, the sanctions have inadvertently created a lucrative business for elusive traders and shipping companies.

Bloomberg quoted Eddie Fishman, a senior research scholar at Columbia University’s Centre on Global Energy Policy, as saying that without concerted action, these substandard alternatives to Western services will become a structural feature of the world oil trade.

The unexpected consequence of reshaping the financial architecture of oil and maritime trade raises concerns about environmental risks and the funds potentially flowing back into Kremlin coffers to finance the Ukraine conflict.

Greek diplomacy and regulatory powerlessness

Despite tentative Western efforts to thwart Russia's workarounds, Greece, the world's single largest oil tanker-owning nation, remains a crucial outlier. Greek-owned vessels have carried 20 per cent of all Russia's oil shipments in 2023, primarily due to diplomatic efforts that watered down measures restricting shippers' ability to trade with Russia.

While Spain successfully stamped out similar activities earlier this year, Greece claims powerlessness to prevent clandestine shipping off its coast, as these activities occur in international waters.

Shadow fleet entrenched and growing

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has expressed "grave concern" over the shadow fleet's illegal activities, calling for a global clampdown to prevent environmental disasters. The shadow fleet, responsible for moving about 45 per cent of Russia's oil this year, is becoming increasingly entrenched, as per Lars Barstad, CEO of Frontline Limited’s management arm.

The fear is that regulators' inability to act against these covert operations could make them a permanent feature of the global oil trade.

Shadowy traders and obscure affiliations

The sanctions' unintended consequences have seen a shift from dominant forces like Vitol Group, Glencore Plc, and Trafigura Group to an army of smaller, difficult-to-trace organisations with unclear affiliations. Entities like Bellatrix Energy and Nord Axis Ltd., previously unknown, have emerged and now handle a significant portion of Russian oil shipments.

The lack of transparency has raised concerns about the environmental and financial risks associated with these obscure traders and their involvement in the oil trade.

US and allies' response and the unanswered question

Amid increasing concerns, the US Treasury has sanctioned oil tankers and expressed a desire to push up costs for Russia. President Joe Biden's energy security adviser, Amos Hochstein, said that the US Treasury and others are taking measures to ensure Moscow's profits from the oil trade fall.

However, the ultimate question remains: Do the US and its allies truly want to curtail Russian oil flows, considering the potential impact on global fuel prices in an election year?

The possibility of Moscow employing workarounds, from the shadow fleet to manipulating Western service providers, suggests a complex challenge for policymakers.
