A stone bridge in Greece is the oldest such structure in the world and has nothing that keeps the rocks stuck to each other. Despite this, it has managed to stay upright for 3,354 years and is so strong that it is still used today. The Arkadiko Bridge in the Peloponnese, Greece, connects Tiryns and Epidauros - popular archaeological sites - in Argolis. The bridge is 72 feet long and 18.4 feet wide. According to estimates, it was built around 1330 BC, Express UK reported.
It was constructed without the use of any binder, like mortar or cement. Yet, it was sturdy enough for the use of horse-drawn chariots. Today, over 3,000 years later, cars can safely pass through it. It belongs to the Greek Bronze Age and is the oldest preserved bridge in Europe.
Its speciality lies in its alignment and the layout. The bridge is made of limestone blocks. Their weight and the symmetrical alignment on the vertical axis play a key role in keeping it in its place. Its design has made it stable enough to endure heavy vehicles, or the chariots in those days.

<h2>The Mycenaean civilisation</h2>
The Mycenaean civilisation was the last phase of the Bronze Age in ancient Greece. It was the first advanced Greek civilisation in mainland Greece with an urban organisation system, sophisticated art and a writing system.
The civilisation ended after the Bronze Age culture collapsed in the eastern Mediterranean. Several reasons have been cited for its end, including the Dorian invasion, a hypothesis that the Dorians moved into the Peloponnese. However, this proposal is believed to be merely a myth.
Some experts believe that climate change and other natural disasters likely killed them.

Greece Faces Widespread Strikes Over Rising Costs

Greece is one of the world's largest chestnut producers but after months of searing heat and drought, most have not ripened. The chestnut harvest in Greece is expected to drop to about 15,000 tonnes in 2024 because of the extreme weather, half the average over the past five years.

A 94th-minute winner by Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a 2-1 victory on Thursday against England in a Nations League clash overshadowed by the death of Greek player George Baldock on the eve of the game, while Italy were held to a draw by Belgium. Greek striker Pavlidis netted a brace, either side of a late Jude Bellingham goal, to send Greece top of Group B2.

Greece's first-ever victory against England came in an emotionally-charged evening at Wembley, which started with a minute's silence prior to kick-off for Baldock, an English-born Greece international who drowned in his swimming pool in Athens on Wednesday.

"It was a really special day for us because of George. We are people and it's a special night because of him," Pavlidis told ITV. "A difficult moment for us because George was part of the team. Special guy. We have to play for him and it doesn't matter the score today. We gave everything for him."

The Greeks took a deserved lead in the 49th minute when Pavlidis danced through flimsy defending in the England box, before driving the ball past Jordan Pickford.

The visitors had three disallowed goals in the match -- the last of which came just minutes before Real Madrid's Bellingham hammered in an 87th-minute equaliser for England.

However, Greece were not to be denied a third win in three Nations League matches as England failed to clear the danger in their area and Pavlidis took full advantage and drilled home a late winner.

In Group A2, Italy and Belgium played out an eventful 2-2 draw in Rome. The Italians raced into the lead inside 60 seconds when Andrea Cambiaso got his first international goal by bundling home from close range.

Mateo Retegui doubled the hosts' lead on 24 minutes, sweeping home with his left foot after a spilled save.

Italy looked comfortable and were dominating the encounter until they suffered a double blow inside the final 10 minutes of the first half. Lorenzo Pellegrini initially picked up a yellow card for his late lunge on Arthur Theate in the 38th minute but, after a VAR review, the Italy playmaker was instead shown a straight red.&nbsp;

Belgium then duly halved the deficit from the resulting free-kick, with Maxim De Cuyper finishing emphatically from 25 yards following a clever set-piece move. Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard completed the Belgian comeback on 61 minutes.

A deep corner was nodded back across goal and Trossard ghosted past the static defence to prod the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma from close range.

"There are episodes that can change a game, like their goal immediately after we went down to ten men," said Italy coach Luciano Spalletti. "A result doesn't always depend on the football you play and your tactics. Certainly, we could have played better in the second half after a very good first half."

Italy remain top of their group with France sitting second after they beat Israel 4-1 in Budapest. Eduardo Camavinga gave France a seventh-minute lead when the goalkeeper fumbled his tame effort, allowing the ball to bounce over the line.

Omri Gandelman levelled on 24 minutes, before Christopher Nkunku restored France's advantage four minutes later with a sharp finish.

As the clock wound down, the visitors added two more goals to their tally via Matteo Guendouzi and Bradley Barcola. Erling Haaland scored a brace as Norway eased past Slovenia 3-0 in Oslo to sit top of Group B3, three points ahead of Austria who beat Kazakhstan 4-0.

Republic of Ireland came from behind in Helsinki to beat Finland 2-1, they sit third in Group B2 behind England. On Friday, Germany visit Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary host the Netherlands in Group A3, while Iceland take on Wales in Group B4.

Greece stun England in Nations League, Italy vs Belgium ends in 2-2 stalemate

Greece, which saw its lowest number of births in 2022, plans to spend 20 billion euros ($22 billion) through 2035 on incentives to halt the decline, including cash benefits and tax breaks. Greece currently spends around 1 billion euros a year on pro-child measures but, like other European countries, to little effect.

A devastating wildfire has torn through a forest in southern Greece, claiming the lives of two firefighters battling the blaze. The fire, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, has spread rapidly, threatening nearby villages and wildlife. Emergency crews are working around the clock to contain the flames, while residents in affected areas have been evacuated as a precaution. The tragedy highlights the ongoing struggle against wildfires in Greece, which has faced increasingly severe fire seasons in recent years.

A village in Greece that disappeared underwater 45 years ago has re-emerged due to the ongoing drought. Lake Mornos in central Greece is drying up, exposing the remains of the buildings that once stood there.

The man-made lake is bearing the brunt of heatwaves, little rain and drought. The lake that supplies water to nearly half the Greek population has dipped to its lowest in the past decades.

The artificial lake submerged the village of Kallio in the 1970s&nbsp;and the Mornos reservoir was brought up in its place. The deliberate act was undertaken to construct a dam that would supply water to Athens. However, people are shocked to see that the village has re-appeared as the water level touches a scary low.

The community that lived there was forced to move upland, but they are now shocked to see the situation. “It’s a nightmarish situation,” Apostolos Gerodimos, the head of the group, told The Guardian.

They were compensated and moved to other urban centres and started a new community.

“The more water levels fall, the more buildings that were submerged back then are re-emerging. If it doesn’t rain this winter the problem is going to get much worse," he added.

“Day by day, the water goes down,” Dimitris Giannopoulos, mayor of the broader Dorida municipality, told CNN. He said that he had not seen anything like this&nbsp;in the past 33 years.

The village of Kallio comprised 80 buildings, including an Evangelist&nbsp;church and primary school. The drought has not yet revealed the church remains, although parts of the stone building where the school was are now&nbsp;becoming visible.&nbsp;

Kostas Koutsoumbas, the village’s vice-mayor, says the water levels “have fallen 40 metres” this year and it looks like they will continue to fall further.

<h2>Greece's weather and global warming</h2>

The surface area of the lake has shrunk from around 16.8 square kilometres in August 2022 to just 12.0 square kilometres this year, as per satellite images released by Greece’s National Observatory.

Greece has an arid Mediterranean climate and is at higher risk of being affected by global warming. There was not much snow during the winter, and the summer season witnessed heatwaves and was marred by wildfires. Some of the fires reached the outskirts of Athens.&nbsp;

The mercury hit record levels in June, July and August in Greece. Scientists say climate change has made the weather in the country worse and this now causing the decline of the lake.

Greece witnessed its warmest winter last year and Mount Giona, that towers over the lake, lost its snow because of that, Giannopoulos said. Trees near the lake have turned yellow. “They lack water. This has never happened before,” he said.

(With inputs from agencies)

Greek village deliberately submerged 45 years ago reappears. 'A nightmarish situation'

The port city of Volos in central Greece declared a state emergency following an inundation of dead fish that local residents say could threaten their livelihoods, the state news agency announced Saturday.

The month-long emergency declaration issued by the climate ministry's secretary general of civil protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, will inject funding and resources to speed up the cleaning of the Pagasetic Gulf port where tons of dead fish have piled up along the coast and in rivers, according to Athens News Agency.&nbsp;

<h2>Second environmental catastrophe&nbsp;</h2>

It is the second environmental catastrophe to hit the port of Volos, a three-and-a-half-hour drive north of Athens after catastrophic floods hit the Thessaly region last year.

Those floods refilled a nearby lake that had been drained in 1962 in a bid to fight malaria, swelling it to three times its normal size.

"After the storms, Daniel and Elias last autumn, around 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of plains in Thessaly were flooded, and various freshwater fish were carried by rivers" to the sea, Dimitris Klaudatos, a professor of agriculture and environment at the University of Thessaly had said.

Since then the lake waters have receded drastically, forcing the freshwater fish toward the Volos port that empties into the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea, where they cannot survive.

On Tuesday alone, authorities had removed 57 tons of the dead fish washed up on beaches near Volos.

Most of the thousands of dead fish that flooded the Pagasetic have been recovered, while two boats are completing the process Saturday, Ertnews channel reported.&nbsp;

Special nets have been placed at the mouth of the Xiria River to contain the large volume of dead fish.

Tourist traffic to the area has already plunged by nearly 80 per cent since last year's flooding, according to the local association of restaurants and bars.

"The situation with this dead fish will be the death of us," said Stefanos Stefanou, the president of the association earlier this week. "What visitor will come to our city after this?"

The environmental crisis has prompted an investigation by the public prosecutor.

Greece declares state of emergency over flood of dead fish

Northern Greece is facing a significant water crisis due to prolonged drought conditions exacerbated by successive heatwaves this summer. Like other areas, it has experienced below-average rainfall for up to three years and drought spots on the map of the region have expanded.

Hundreds of thousands of dead fish washed up on a tourist port in Greece. The fish started collecting in the central city of Volos this week after they were expelled from their freshwater regions due to flooding the previous year.

The floating remains of the fish have covered the port with a silvery blanket that "spans kilometres". The residents and authorities rushed to the site to remove them before the stench reached hotels and restaurants in the area.

The fish were collected using nets by trawlers and were put in the back of trucks on Wednesday. According to the authorities, over 40 tonnes of fish have been piled up in the last 24 hours.

Achilleas Beos, the mayor of Volos, said the odour was unbearable. In a press conference on Wednesday, he blamed the government for not handling the issue before it reached the city. The rotting fish could pose an environmental threat to other species in the region, he added.

<h2>Aftermath of last year's flood</h2>

According to experts, the historic floods in the Thessaly plane farther north last year was the cause behind this incident. The flood water refilled a lake drained in 1962 to prevent the spread of malaria, causing it to swell by three times more than its normal state.

The water in the lake receded and pushed the fish to the Volos port that drains into the salt water of Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The river flowing to Volos did not have any net placed at its mouth to stop the fish from going into saltwater of the sea, which likely killed them, said the experts.

“They didn’t do the obvious, to put a protective net,” Mayor Beos said, blaming the government authorities.

The environment ministry has not commented on the issue yet. An investigation has been ordered by the local prosecutors.

Scientists have linked the disaster to climate change which caused extreme weather in Greece. This resulted in scorching high temperatures and unpredictable rainfall that caused wildfires and floods in the country.

<h2>'Too late' for local restaurants</h2>

“Closing the barrier now doesn’t help,” said Dimosthenis Bakoyiannis, a beach restaurant owner near Volos. “Now it’s too late, the tourist season is over.”&nbsp;

Bakoyiannis claims his turnover has significantly dropped by 80% this season as tourists did not want to visit after the floods.

“The situation with this dead fish will be the death of us,” said the president of the local association of restaurants and bars, Stefanos Stefanou. “What visitor will come to our city after this?”
