‘It’s not an upset’ – Cricket world reacts to Afghanistan’s historic win over Australia in Super 8s of T20 WC

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has revealed that he received texts from England players before their last league stage match against Scotland in ongoing T20 World Cup. It is to be noted that England needed arch-rivals Australia to beat Scotland and a win over Namibia in their own match to qualify for the knockout stage.

A comment by Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood before the match where he suggested that keeping England out of tournament would be in their best interest sparked 'spirit of game' debate. Australia's Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, however, maintained that a comment made in jest was taken out of context.

"Yeah, just a couple of texts here and there. It was actually quite funny. There was a lot of chat out in the ground like 'Are we doing this? Are we seriously going to let England back in?" said Maxwell on ESPN's 'Around the Wicket' podcast.

Australia eventually won the game with five wickets and two balls to spare in chase of 181.&nbsp;

"There was almost this interesting part where they dropped Tim David's catch when there was 3 required off 3. When it gets down to the last 2-3 balls, who knows what's going to happen? Luckily enough, we got over the line and luckily enough, they got through. But I heard it was absolutely chaos. They were in the hotel and there was a fair bit of panic. Guys booking flights and cancelling etc. Would have been fun being a fly on the wall watching that," he added.

England, on the other hand, won their match against Namibia despite the rain interruption and kept their title defence campaign on track. England are in Group 2 of Super Eight stage with South Africa, USA and West Indies.

While most players feel drained with continuous travel and the issues that come with it, the feel-good factor is still intact in the squad, said the left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.&nbsp;

"I think mentally, once you've done that, you go into the sessions ready to go because you've already enjoyed what the Caribbean has to offer."

Maxwell revealed he approached RCB Captain Faf du Plessis and head coach Andy Flower and addressed the elephant in the room, admitting he didn’t feel he was doing any good to the side with the underconfident approach he went ahead with, thus deciding to rest himself.

"I was pretty low on confidence," Maxwell said.&nbsp;

"I had a good couple of net sessions and just went out to the ground and felt really tentative. I wasn't able to really commit to my game plans and just felt like if I had kept playing and playing that role, I don't think the results would change too much.

"So, I just went to Faf and said, look, I think we need to try someone else in my position and had the same conversation with Andy Flower, the coach, and to me, it was a bit of a no-brainer. I think it sort of saves the tough conversation they might have to have about dropping me,” he continued.

Although Maxwell’s absence didn’t help the cause, as RCB lost to SRH by 25 runs in a high-scoring game, Maxwell feels someone else making the most of that position could perhaps alter RCB’s fortune, which continues to suffer big time in IPL 2024.&nbsp;

"I felt really at peace with it. Obviously, I'm frustrated that I wasn't able to get the results I would have liked but comfortable in the fact that I know I feel like I've made the right decision for the team, and it's certainly not like I'm taking an extended break away from the game.

"I just think it's a better opportunity for someone else to have a crack at my position. I know I'm an important part of this side, but at the moment, I'm not playing well enough to, I suppose warrant a spot,” Maxwell added.

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has backed Glenn Maxwell after the latter announced his decision to take a mental health break during the ongoing IPL season. Ponting said being one of the 'top dogs' of the star-studded Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team had weighed heavy on the fellow Australian.&nbsp;

Maxwell on Monday (Apr 15) decided to step away from the firing line as his performances remained underwhelming while RCB struggled in the tournament.&nbsp;

"For someone like Glenn if you talk about, in that team (RCB), him being one of the 'Big Dogs' along with Virat, a lot of pressure comes on a couple of players playing in that team if they don't perform, the results tend to not follow them. If you see what they have done in the tournament so far, pressure builds up on an individual player as well," Ponting was quoted as saying by PTI.

Ponting said coaches and team management should have players' health and well-being as&nbsp;the topmost priority when dealing with the serious rigors of professional cricket.&nbsp;

I went to Faf [du Plessis] and the coaches after the last game and said I felt it was probably time we tried someone else. I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole."

The big-hitting Aussie, who comes to bat in the middle order, acknowledged his shortcomings where he was not able to score runs in the post-powerplay period and said it's time for someone else to come in.

"We have had a pretty big deficiency straight after the powerplay, which has been my area of strength over the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn't contributing in a positive way with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it's a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own."
