Germany has decided to shut down its last three nuclear power plants, while many Germans have been vocally anti-atomic since the beginning of the civil nuclear program. The fuel shortages due to the Russia-Ukraine war also threw a spanner over the decision.

Germany to shut down last three nuclear power plants; new plan to focus on renewable energy

An era is about to draw close in Germany. The country will shut down operations in its remaining three nuclear power plants on Saturday — marking the end of the atomic age that spawned more than six decades.

An era is about to draw close in Germany. The country will shut down operations in its remaining three nuclear power plants on Saturday — marking the end of the atomic age that spawned more than six decades. The European nation and its populace have always harboured a strong anti-nuclear sentiment. The campaign to exit nuclear energy started during the Cold War after the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine and it was accelerated after the 2011 Fukushima Daichi disaster in Japan. Shutters are coming down 12 years later. "The risks of nuclear power are ultimately unmanageable," said Environment Minister Steffi Lemke as she visited the Japanese plant earlier this week. The three plants to shut down later on Saturday provided six per cent of Germany's energy last year — down from the highs of nearly 31 per cent that all nuclear plants provided in 1997. Notably, Germany has shut down 16 reactors since 2003. Extension of power plants It was last year in October that Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced to keep the three plants running till April amid a looming power crisis, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war. "The legal basis will be created to allow the operation of the nuclear power plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland beyond December 31, 2022, until April 15, 2023," said Scholz at the time. ALSO READ | Amid looming power crunch, Germany decides to extend operations of remaining 3 nuclear plants Russia supplies about 40 per cent of the European Union's gas. And Germany relies on Moscow for 55 per cent of its gas needs. Though it has managed to reduce this to 35 per cent and wants eventually to reduce imports to zero, Germany has been mulling increasing the use of coal and extending the life of power stations despite the negative environmental impact. WATCH | Germany keeps two nuclear reactors on standby amid Europe's energy crisis × Experts, however, are puzzled that Berlin is going ahead with its plan to use coal energy, despite the serious environmental ramifications it has. “At a time of heightened concern about energy security, Germany will be abandoning assets that can displace 34 billion cubic metres of gas a year," Tom Greatrex, chief executive of the UK’s Nuclear Industry Association was quoted as saying in The Guardian. To offset the loss of nuclear plants and the energy they provided, Scholz has called for installation of "four to five wind turbines a day" over the next few years. However, the ground reality remains different as only 551 wind turbines were installed last year. With the country planning to close all coal-fired power plants by 2038 with the first round of closure planned in 2030 — the clock is ticking for Scholz's administration to ensure energy stability for the public. Nuclear power phase-out: Germany switches off remaining three reactors permanently

All power plants, coal, gas & nuclear, have a finite life. Beyond a certain period, it is not economically feasible to operate them. Generally, early nuclear plants were designed for a life of about 30 years. While newer plants are designed for 40 to 60 years of operating life. At the end of the life of any power plant, it needs to be decommissioned, cleaned up & demolished. The work of dismantling a nuclear power plant is painstaking. Germany's last three nuclear reactors will go fully offline by mid-April. They will enter the slow process of decommissioning.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has slammed the 'sanctimonious' western nations for commenting on internal matters of other countries. Jaishankar was replying to a question about Germany and the USA passing unsolicited remarks on the disqualification of Indian parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi. The EAM said the West thinks it has the 'God-given' right to comment on India's internal matters. He was addressing a 'Meet and Greet' interaction in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru with BJP MP Tejaswi Surya and PC Mohan in attendance. "I will give you the truthful answer (on why we see West commenting on India). There are two reasons. It is because the West has a bad habit of commenting on others. They somehow think it is some kind of god-given right. They will have to learn only by experience that if they keep doing this, other people will also start commenting and they will not like it when it happens. And I see that happening," said Jaishankar. "The second part of the truth - In our arguments, you are inviting the people to comment on you. Then more and more people are tempted to comment. We also need to stop giving generous invitations to the world saying there are problems in India, and (urging) America and the world (by saying), why are you standing by doing nothing? So if somebody from here goes and says why are you standing by and saying nothing, then obviously they are going to comment. Part of the problem is them, and part of the problem is us. And I think both need fixing." WATCH | India has firmly responded to China: EAM S Jaishankar × What did the US and Germany say? Travellers in Germany are bracing for huge transport chaos as the country’s two major unions have called for a one-day strike seeking higher wages to cope up with the high cost of living.

Shortly before midnight on Sunday, employees working at railways, airports, ports, buses and subways walked out ahead of the 24-hour halt.

German news agency dpa reported that around 1,500 connections were affected, and take-offs and landings were only possible for emergency humanitarian flights.

Though there have been sporadic smaller walkouts by other public service sectors, Monday will be the largest strike in decades in the country

The two unions involved in the strike are Verdi and EVG— which are among the largest in Germany.

Verdi represents around 2.5 million employees across the public sector including in public transport and at airports. And EVG represents around 230,000 employees at Deutsche Bahn - Germany's national rail operator, and other bus companies.

Officials at Munich Airport, Germany's second-busiest airport, said that there would be no passenger or cargo flights on either Sunday or Monday.

Verdi is seeking a 10.5 per cent pay rise, while the EVG wants a 12 per cent raise for its staff. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Germany braces for ‘mega strike’: Bus, railways, airports to come to grinding halt on Monday

Germany woke up on Monday to a halt in the transport network, caused by a strike led by two major unions in the country. The unions have called for wage increases to combat inflation, which have been a major cause of concern. The strike was led by airport, port, railway, bus and metro staff who withdrew their services after midnight for a 24-hour walkout.

The fight for the German capital to become carbon neutral comes to an end. Turns out, not enough voters in Berlin supported a push to make the capital city carbon-neutral by 2030. The results from a referendum were declared on Sunday.

Morning news brief: Germany braces for 'mega strike', Netanyahu sacks defence minister and more

The German police said on Sunday (March 26) that two men died after a shooting late Saturday in the port city of Hamburg. The police added they had concluded an initial response and were now investigating the incident. According to the prosecutor's office in Hamburg, one of the dead was believed to be the alleged shooter, a report by DW said, adding the shooter fired several shots at the other man before turning the gun on himself.

Citing a report from the Bild newspaper, the DW reported that police were called shortly before midnight to the scene of the shooting in the Langenhorn district. Twenty-eight emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. Officers were said to have discovered the two dead men on a pathway between two apartment buildings. Both were said to have succumbed to their gunshot wounds instantly.

This shooting in Hamburg comes days after a mass shooting at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall on March (9). Thirty-five-year-old Philipp F, a former member of the congregation, went on a shooting spree and killed eight people, including himself. The police had said that the motive of the crime remained unknown. DW reported that authorities had received an anonymous tipoff that the perpetrator might have psychological issues but the police gave him the all-clear during a surprise visit to his property.

The mass shooting at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall led to a debate over the effectiveness of Germany's gun control laws, and several politicians demanded urgent reviews of restrictions on weapons ownership.

The report said that at present, the government requires only people under the age of 25 to undergo medical or psychological assessments before being granted a gun licence.

Germany: Two found killed after shooting in Hamburg, shooter likely among dead

The European Union and Germany, on Saturday (March 25), struck a deal which would decide the future use of combustion engines, said officials. In line with the agreement, a planned phaseout on the sale of cars using fossil fuels will take place by 2035. However, it also allowed some combustion engines beyond the 2035 mark, a move which has since drawn condemnation from the prominent environmental group, Greenpeace.

The deal also ends the dispute between Berlin and Brussels over the manufacturing of cars which use so-called e-fuels. This comes as Berlin wanted assurances that new combustion engine cars can be sold beyond the deadline if they run on e-fuels. In line with this, the Germany and EU have decided that they would allow cars to be registered after that date, providing that any fuel they use is exclusively carbon neutral, as per media reports.

“We have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars,” EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans wrote on Twitter. He added, “We will work now on getting the CO2 standards for cars regulation adopted as soon as possible, and the Commission will follow up swiftly with the necessary legal steps.”

Meanwhile, German Transport Minister Volker Wissing had also taken to the microblogging platform and said that “the way is clear” after the agreement was reached, late Friday. He added, “Vehicles with internal combustion engines can still be newly registered after 2035 if they fill up exclusively with CO2-neutral fuels.”

The EU diplomats are yet to vote on the formal approval of the 2035 phase-out law. Sweden, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, said that the voting will take place on Monday.

The landmark deal will prohibit new sales of fossil fuel cars from 2035, however, in an unprecedented move earlier this month a leading car producer blocked the agreement at the last minute after it had been approved through the EU’s legislative process, reported AFP.

“This stinky compromise undermines climate protection in transport, and it harms Europe,” said Benjamin Stephan of Greenpeace, as per Reuters. He added that it dilutes the needed focus of the auto industry on efficient electromobility.

The development of the synthetic fuels that Berlin had sought an exemption for, is said to be produced using low-carbon electricity but the technology remains unproven. While German manufacturers hope it will lead to the extended use of combustion engines, Environmental NGOs have disputed its value to the transition towards clean energy sources and said that it is expensive, polluting and energy-intensive.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the response of Germany to the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions shows that the country is still "occupied" and not able to independently act decades after it surrendered at the climax of World War Two.

In an interview on Russian television, Putin said that the leaders in European countries have been browbeaten into losing their sense of independence and sovereignty.

Western nations, including Germany, have declined to comment on who they think was responsible for the blasts.

"The matter is that European politicians have said themselves publicly that after World War Two, Germany was never a fully sovereign state," Putin was quoted saying.

"The Soviet Union at one point withdrew its forces and ended what amounted to an occupation of the country. But that, as is well known, was not the case with the Americans. They continue to occupy Germany,” he added.

Putin claimed that the blasts on the Nord Stream gas pipelines were carried out on a "state level" and called the suggestions that it was carried out by an autonomous pro-Ukraine group "complete nonsense".

"One should always look for those who are interested. And who is interested? Theoretically, of course, the United States is interested. An explosion of this kind, of this power, at this depth, can only be carried out by specialists, and supported by the full power of the state, which has certain technologies," Putin stated.

Israeli army veterans are participating in a large demonstration at Ben-Gurion Airport to prevent prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu from leaving for Germany to a state-visit scheduled on Thursday.

A convoy of former hostages and members of the Israeli army who participated in the Entebbe Operation in Uganda in 1976 arrived to demonstrate at the airport against Netanyahu's judicial overhaul.

Benny Davidson, who was 13 years old when he and the other passengers on board were taken hostage in the 1976 hijack, stated at the protest site on Wednesday that “there needs to be more than those fighters in Entebbe; we need tens, hundreds, or millions to make it clear that civil war is out of the question," reported Israeli newspaper.

An old black Mercedes led the convoy. It was a reference to the then-Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s official car, a replica of which the Israeli commandos used to reach the hijacked plane.

Operation Entebbe was initiated after German and Palestinian hijackers took control of an Air France jet from Tel Aviv for Paris. The hijackers diverted the plane to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda.

They presented their demands to Israel for the release of a sizable number of Palestinian detainees in exchange for the release of the 247 hostages.

The Israeli mission involved flying Hercules aircraft to Uganda underneath the radar's detection and donning Ugandan military uniform. They also flew an exact copy of Amin's vehicle as a decoy to the terrorists. A total of 248 captives, primarily Israeli and Jewish, were freed.

The operation resulted in the deaths of four civilians and one Israeli soldier, including Yoni Netanyahu, Benjamin Netanyahu's brother. On Thursday, there will be another day of nationwide protests against the government's judicial coup, called "The day of escalating resistance."

The largest street protests in Israel's history, according to organisers, took place on Saturday night when hundreds of thousands of Israelis demonstrated against the government's judicial plans. In recent months, there has been a noticeably increased level of violence between Israel and the Palestinians.
