Women will soon be granted permission to swim topless in public pools in Berlin in accordance with a ruling of the city's authorities.

The step has been taken after a woman took legal action after being thrown out of an open-air pool because of sunbathing topless.

The complainant, whose identity was not revealed by the authorities, reached the senate’s ombudsperson’s office where she demanded equal treatment and argued that women must be allowed to go topless if they choose to do so.

The authorities accepted that the victims have faced discrimination and said that all visitors to the pools of Berlin are now free to go topless, irrespective of their gender.

As a result of the complaint, the Berliner Baederbetriebe, which has been running the public pools of Berlin, made changes in its clothing rules accordingly.

“The ombudsperson’s office very much welcomes the decision of the Baederbetriebe, because it establishes equal rights for all Berliners, whether male, female or non-binary, and because it also creates legal certainty for the staff at the Baederbetriebe,“ Doris Liebscher, the head of the ombudsperson's office, said

“Now it is important that the regulation is applied consistently and that no more expulsions or house bans are issued,” Liebscher added.

The outcome is likely to be received as a piece of good news by those who follow Germany’s freikörperkultur, or “free body culture”.

In 2022, various cities of the country brought the concept of topless swimming in public pools, including Gottingen in Lower Saxony and Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Berlin to permit women to swim topless in public pools

The gunman who went on a shooting rampage in Hamburg, Germany, killing seven people and injuring several others before turning the gun on himself, was visited by the police weeks before after they received a tip-off which raised concerns about the man's mental health.

The police said that the man co-operated with them and that they did not have enough grounds to seize the gun at the time. The 35-year-old suspected gunman, Philipp F, had been issued a licence to own a gun for sporting purposes.

A new law is being prepared by the government which will have tighter curbs on ownership of the gun, said the interior minister.

Seven people, which included an unborn baby, were killed by the gunman in the attack which took place at a Jehovah's Witness meeting hall in the city.

The first emergency call was received at 21:04 local time (20:04 GMT) to report that gunshots were fired and the police officers reached the site four minutes later.

A video later appeared in which the gunman was seen firing through a window. He then entered the building where many people had gathered and fired nine magazines of ammunition before he apparently turned the gun on himself.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that there can be a rise in the death toll. German Senator Andy Grote said that many lives were saved by police officers' "fast and decisive actions". He added that the attack was the "worst crime" in the recent history of Hamburg.

Hamburg Police Chief Ralf Martin Meyer on Friday said that the police officers had visited the man in February after an anonymous letter was sent to them claiming that he "bore particular anger toward religious believers, in particular toward Jehovah's Witnesses".

The letter also stated that he "might be suffering from a mental illness, although it had not been medically diagnosed".

The U.S. and Germany have worked closely to supply Ukraine with military and humanitarian assistance, but there has also been friction over issues such as providing tanks. Washington has occasionally grown frustrated with berlin's hesitance. Maintaining a steady flow of weapons to Kyiv will be critical in the war's second year, especially with both sides planning spring offensives. Meeting Scholz, Biden said the two nations are making the NATO alliance stronger, as the U.S. announced a new military aid package for Ukraine.

An 81-year-old man opened fire on Tuesday (February 28) near a primary school in the north-western town of Bramsche in Germany and critically injured a teen, police said, adding that the shooter also critically injured himself with the weapon. Both of them were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, a police spokesperson in the city of Osnabrueck further informed, asserting that "there was no danger to the public".

The shooting took place near the Martinusschule Primary School. However, it was not related to the school, an official statement, roughly translated from German, highlighted. "The elementary school was not affected by the use of firearms and at no time was there any danger to the students or teachers," the Osnabrueck Police stated. The scene was cordoned off, and the police investigation is ongoing. "Perpetrators and victims were apparently known, a connection with the school can be ruled out according to the current status of the investigation," the police further stressed.

Gun violence in Germany is not as rampant as the United States but several incidents have made headlines in the recent times. Last year, in January, a shooter opened fire at the Heidelberg University in the south-western part of the European country, killing one and injuring several others, before killing himself. Months later, two people were found dead in another shooting incident at a supermarket in Frankfurt. "Based on consistent witness statements, a man first shot a woman in the grocery store and then apparently took his own life," a police statement said at the time. The man was 58 while the woman was 53.

Germany on Wednesday (February 22) dismissed issues, if any, surrounding India buying Russian oil as "none of our business. German Ambassador to India Dr Phillip Ackermann noted that decision to purchase Russian oil rested with Indian government. He added that India is a very appropriate candidate to come up with solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict but said that that stage was not now.

"That`s something which the Indian Government decides and as you get it at a very low price, I cannot blame any government who buys it," Ackermann said in response to queries at a press conference about the upcoming visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to India on February 25 and 26.

"But we would like to see some Indian engagement at some stage. India is a very appropriate candidate at some stage may be to come up with some solution. But, I don`t think this is the time now. I say this with all due caution because we have listened to what Putin said yesterday. When you want to find a solution to the conflict, you need two parties to be prepared to find this solution," he added.

He referred to President Putin`s remarks at Russia`s Federal assembly.

"What we heard yesterday, Putin said...he didn`t mention the word - negotiation or peace, one single time. India has very, very skilled diplomacy, very good diplomacy, if they want to step up they will have to find a good moment to step up. What I can say is the moment is not now," the German envoy added. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said that Moscow wanted to solve the conflict in Ukraine but the Western countries had prepared a "different scenario" behind its back, Reuters reported.

"We were doing everything possible to solve this problem peacefully, negotiating a peaceful way out of this difficult conflict, but behind our backs, a very different scenario was being prepared," Putin said while addressing the federal assembly.

About German efforts to find solution to the conflict, Ackermann said that Germany is on phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin every now and then.

"There`s uninterrupted communication between the Kremlin and some European capitals. We have to be honest, this communication has delivered nothing, but we believe the Ukraine crisis must be resolved diplomatically," he said.

Ackermann said Germany "will continue to help Ukraine to defend its territory".

"The Russian side is surprised by the unity and strategic patience of the West. It is important to sustain the international order. Our position on Crimea is clear too. It is an integral part of Ukraine," he said.

Talking about Scholz`s India visit, he said the German leader will also visit Bengaluru besides Delhi." German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will arrive in India on Saturday on a bilateral visit. This is his first visit in his current tenure to India. He will visit New Delhi and Bengaluru.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel may no longer be at the helm but she returned to headlines on Monday when her office said that the 68-year-old leader received a call in January from someone posing as Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's ex-president. Two Russian pranksters - Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, known as Vovan and Lexus - are believed to be linked to the call, highlighted a report by German state-run broadcaster Deutsche Welle. The duo released excerpts of the call on Telegram during which the German ex-chancellor reportedly said that the Minsk agreement bought precious time for Ukraine.

They have so far targeted Polish President Andrzej Duda (twice in two years), former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Elton John and Prince Harry. The conversation, which they claim to have with Merkel, was assisted by German-Ukrainian interpreter from the German Foreign Ministry's language service, reports suggest. What is Minsk agreement
Merkel and former French President Francois Hollande brokered the 2014 Minsk deal with Poroshenko and Russian president Vladimir Putin. The details have been revealed at a time when Russia's invasion of Ukraine is set to complete a year on February 24. While the first agreement was signed in 2014, the second agreement was signed in 2015. The deal - aimed at resolving geopolitical tensions between the two nations - was also signed to stop the fighting in the rebel-held region of Donbas.

A ceasefire, military withdrawal from the line of contact and prisoner exchange were among the highlights of the first section. In the second section, deals with the Ukrainian government - to restore control over its eastern border and holding local elections in the occupied territories - were underlined. This was expected to be followed by the political reintegration of Donbas into Ukraine.

However, despite involvement of France and Germany, it failed to bring peace in Ukraine in the years that followed. While some critics suggested the deal was in favour of Moscow, others said it was convoluted.

Merkel, however, has been a supporter of the agreement.
