Five men have been sentenced to several years in prison for their role in what has been dubbed the biggest art heist in modern history by German media, on Tuesday (May 16). The audacious heist made headlines across the world back in 2019 when pieces with an estimated value of over 113 million euros ($123 million) were stolen after a break-in at the Gruenes Gewoelbe (Green Vault) museum in the German city of Dresden.

About the heist

The gang belonging to the notorious criminal network, Berlin’s Remmo family, broke into the historic Green Vault in Dresden in the early hours of November 25, 2019. In what is being described as a meticulously planned heist, the theft was conducted by a gang living in the city of Berlin who have reportedly visited the site multiple times before and had prepared their entry point in advance.

According to the prosecutors, during these visits they had taken apart a section of cast-iron guttering in advance using a hydraulic cutting machine to saw through the bars of a protective window covering before taping them back into place, to get into the building as quickly as possible during the heist.

Furthermore, they have also set fire to a circuit breaker panel near the museum which effectively created a blackout on the surrounding streets of the site when two men slipped inside, the footage released by Saxony Police showed. They quickly move through the gallery using flashlights. Subsequently, one of them uses an axe to break the glass which took at least nine hits.

They went on to steal millions of dollars worth of jewels and then sprayed a foam fire extinguisher over the room to cover their tracks and left the site in an Audi. The car was then dumped in a car park before it was set on fire and took a different vehicle to get to Berlin, reported BBC.

Notably, Berlin’s Remmo family is a notorious organised crime gang of Arab roots known as a “clan” by the German media. Last year, a German court also found them guilty of stealing a giant gold coin which weighed at least 100 kilograms from the German capital city’s Bode Museum in 2017. The coin was never recovered and is said to be either broken up or melted down.

What did they steal?

Among some of the most valuable artefacts stolen from the Green Vault, the gang stole some 4,300 diamonds and other precious stones from 21 diamond-studded items, while the estimated cost was around 113 million euros, some have called these priceless as the vault was home to an astounding collection of historical jewellery and precious ornaments.

Notably, one of the most famous pieces of the collection, a 41-carat green diamond known as the Dresden Green, was not present in the museum at the time as it was loaned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The items stolen also included a 1780s hat clasp decorated with 15 large and more than 100 small diamonds as well as a 96-centimetre sword and a sheath which were decorated with more than 800 diamonds.

What happened in the court?

Out of the six members of the criminal gang, which were suspected to be involved in the heist, five men got convicted. The perpetrators are said to be in their 20s from Germany and were charged with crimes including aggravated arson and dangerous bodily injury, theft with weapons, damage to property, and intentional arson.

Their sentences ranged from four to six years with the highest being against Wissam R, 26, and Rabieh R, 29, who were handed six years and three months and six years and two months prison sentences respectively. While the sixth suspect who had an alibi and pleaded not guilty, was acquitted.

The verdict closes the year-long investigation which had led to their arrests. While a large part of the loot was returned to the museum following a confession from three of the men who agreed to give up the location of the stolen items for a lighter sentence in a deal with the prosecutors, several items remain missing.

Among which was a very rare diamond called the White Stone of Saxony. While the artefacts that were returned were also partly damaged. According to estimators, the damage caused by the break-in alone was more than one million euros ($1,088,660).

The Green Vault

The Gruenes Gewoelbe or Green Vault which is a part of the Royal Palace of Dresden gets its name from the green-coloured columns and green velvet wall coverings present in multiple rooms of the museum and consists of priceless artefacts from shimmering bowls carved out of crystal to jewelled figurines and gilded ostrich eggs.

The treasures were said to have survived bombing raids of World War II only to be carted off to the Soviet Union as spoils of war. During the war, three of the vault’s eight richly decorated exhibition rooms were destroyed in an air raid on the German city in February 1945.

Fortunately, some of the portable exhibits had already been removed and stored at a fortress in the nearby Elbsandstein mountains. The artefacts were then taken by the Red Army Trophy Commission and shipped to the Soviet Union and were returned to Dresden, the historic capital of the state of Saxony, in 1958 after Moscow passed a resolution.

However, due to the damage to the palace parts of the collection returned were on public display in the city’s Albertinum museum. It was not until 50 years or so later that the treasure reclaimed its place in the Royal Palace in 2004.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, in 2006, officially reopened the vault following a multi-million-euro renovation. The director of Dresden’s State Art Collection, Marion Ackermann, as per CNN, said their material value doesn’t even begin to reflect their “incalculable” historical and cultural importance.

The items were amassed by Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony, back in the 18th century, who not only collected the diamond-studded pieces but also designed the Green Vault to display them. As per reports, nearly all the stolen items were forged during the rule of Frederick Augustus III, the last Elector of Saxony who later came to be known as Frederick Augustus I, the first King of Saxony.

'Moscow bound to lose', says Kyiv after Germany announces biggest arms package

The Ukrainian President Zelensky is in Germany on his first official visit since the war with Russia. He met with his counterpart followed by meeting with Germany's chancellor Olaf Scholz where he thanked Berlin for its fantastic solidarity.

Ukrainian President Zelensky meets German President Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed Germany a "true friend and reliable ally" in his country's war against Russia on Sunday, as Berlin supplied an extensive new military package for Kyiv during his visit to the EU powerhouse. Zelensky's visit to Germany comes after talks in Rome with Italian leaders and the Pope, and it coincides with Kyiv's plans for a much-anticipated counter-offensive.

"In the most challenging time in the modern history of Ukraine, Germany proved to be our true friend and reliable ally, which stands decisively side-by-side with the Ukrainian people in the struggle to defend freedom and democratic values," Zelensky wrote in the guestbook at the German president's official residence.

"Together we will win and bring peace back to Europe," he added.

Ukrainian forces have been training troops and stockpiling Western-supplied ammunition and gear, which many believe will be critical in regaining territory taken by Russia.

Germany was formerly accused of being hesitant to give military equipment to Ukraine, but it has since become a significant donor of tanks, rockets, and anti-missile systems.

On the occasion of Zelensky's visit, Berlin presented its largest weaponry package for Ukraine to date, totaling 2.7 billion euros in tanks, missile defence systems, and combat vehicles.

According to Zelensky, he "discussed the current situation and intensive cooperation between Germany and Ukraine" with Steinmeier.

He was afterwards received with military honours by Chancellor Olaf Scholz before entering negotiations behind closed doors.

He is also set to visit the western German city of Aachen, which will confer the Charlemagne honour on him and the Ukrainian people this year.

Scholz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki are expected to attend the event in Aachen.

A meeting with European leaders might help pave the stage for an EU summit in Reykjavik next Tuesday, followed by the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

Zelensky's visit caps a year of turbulent relations with Germany, which is now one of Ukraine's largest arms suppliers, but only after much pressure from Kiev.

Berlin said on Saturday that it will deliver Ukraine more fire units and launchers for the Iris-T anti-missile system, 30 extra Leopard 1 tanks, more than 100 armoured combat vehicles, and more than 200 surveillance drones in a strong show of support for Kyiv.

"We all hope for a rapid end to this terrible war by Russia against the Ukrainian people, but unfortunately this is not in sight," Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement.

"This is why Germany will supply all the help that it can, for as long as necessary," he said.

Earlier in the war, Kyiv accused Germany of being overly conciliatory to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Berlin's reliance on Russian energy became problematic.

Kyiv had similarly refused Steinmeier's visit in the weeks following the invasion, delaying Scholz's first journey to the war-torn nation.

Steinmeier and Scholz have both visited Ukraine subsequently.

Germany, the largest economy in Europe, may be in trouble after its industrial production fell more than expected in March. This has triggered fears of a recession later this year.

According to a Reuters report, industrial production tumbled 3.4 percent from the previous month, while automobile manufacturing dropped 6.5 percent. Machinery and equipment production fell by 3.4 percent, while the construction sector's output decreased by 4.6 percent in March.

The economics ministry reported an unforeseen and significant drop in industrial production in March, following a solid start to the year. The statistics office also confirmed that production in the first quarter was 2.5 percent higher than in the final quarter of the previous year.

The slowdown in industrial production was partly caused by the recent global increase in interest rates, which hurt the economy as industrial orders reduced significantly. Specifically, German industrial orders dropped by 10.7 percent on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis compared to the previous month, as per Reuters.

This was the largest monthly decline since 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The risks of a recession in Germany are rising," Reuters quoted Commerzbank's chief economist Ralph Solveen as saying.

Retail sales and exports also dropped sharply, increasing the likelihood of a downward revision to first-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If this happens, Germany's economy could be considered to have fallen into a recession, which is defined as two consecutive quarters of contraction.

Carsten Brzeski, ING's global head of macro, told Reuters that there is a high risk of a downward revision to the first-quarter GDP, making a technical recession more likely.

German and Italian police on Wednesday arrested more than 100 members of the Italian ’Ndrangheta' organised crime syndicate as part of a "wide-scale" operation. In Germany, more than 1,000 officers searched dozens of homes, offices and stores across Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia. Operations also took place in Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta' is regarded as the world's richest organised crime group and European authorities have been waging a war against it for years. The mafia group has managed to earn revenues in excess of tens of billions of dollars by selling cocaine over the decades. Police in Bavaria said the arrests on Wednesday were the culmination of a three-year investigation effort codenamed 'Operation Eureka'. Michael Ebling, State Interior Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, said the arrests were an "effective blow" against organised crime. “Today sends out a very clear signal: There is no place for organised crime in Europe and there is certainly no place for it here with us in Rhineland-Palatinate,” Ebling was quoted as saying by dpa. WATCH | Italy's largest mafia trial opens for 'Ndrangheta mob group' × German state office of the criminal investigation said most of the suspects arrested are accused of money laundering, gang tax evasion, commercial gang fraud, and narcotics smuggling. According to reports, the investigators unearthed a widespread network of cafes, restaurants, pizzerias and ice cream parlours which acted as a front for the mafia organisation and took part in money laundering operations. Italian and Belgian investigators said the crime group smuggled close to 25 tonnes of cocaine worth $24.2 million between October 2019 and January 2022 from Calabria to Belgium, the Netherlands and South America. Notably, last year in November, Carmine Alfonso Maiorano, a 68-year-old leader of the mafia group was arrested in the town of Guernica in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ndrangheta's genesis The mafia group's genesis dates back to the 18th century. Unlike most modern-day mafia groups, members of 'Ndrangheta' still follow ancient rites which are passed down orally and through secret codes. To avoid clutches of the law enforcement agencies, the group members avoid speaking on phones entirely, opting to drive hundreds of miles for a meeting. A German court said on Wednesday that former Audi CEO Rupert Stadler is ready to plead guilty in the 'Dieselgate' saga. Upon reaching an agreement with the Munich district court, Stadler will make the guilty plea in lieu of receiving a suspended sentence and a fine.

According to a court spokesperson, the ex-Audi chief will receive a prison sentence of up to two years and a fine of $1.2 million. Stadler's trial began in late 2020 and up until last week, he refused to plead guilty. However, after pleading guilty, the auto executive's confession is expected to be read out in two weeks. Notably, Stadler joined the company in 1990 and had been with Volkswagen ever since. He became Audi's CEO in 2007 and joined VW's management board three years later. However, after the scandal broke out, Stadler went to jail temporarily in 2018 before being laid off by the company. The emissions-cheating scandal first broke out in 2015 and rocked the entire automobile world. Audi's parent company Volkswagen, which also operates subsidiaries such as Porsche and Skoda, admitted it had installed software to rig emission levels in 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide. During the court proceedings, VW admitted that the cheating dated back to 2006. The cheating device allowed vehicles to appear less polluting in lab tests than they were on the roads. Research conducted by the University of West Virginia discovered that certain VW cars emitted up to 40 times the permissible levels of harmful nitrogen oxide when tested on the road. ALSO READ | Volkswagen 'dieselgate' fraud: Timeline of a scandal Former Audi exec pleads guilty Stadler's admission comes barely a week after Wolfgang Hatz, a former top executive at Audi pleaded guilty. Hatz confirmed that he and two other colleagues arranged the installation of banned software to rig emissions in diesel vehicles. Hatz's lawyer said the defendant "recognised and accepted" that in Germany the software would be considered an illegal defeat device and could also violate American laws. In March, the Paris Court of Appeal rejected a request by VW to dismiss charges of deception in a separate diesel emissions investigation in France. The auto giant argued that it could not be charged a second time for a similar offence, having already paid $1.1 billion in fines in Germany in 2018. Starting Monday (May 1st) people in Germany can now use the nation's public transport system — buses, metro system, as well as local and regional trains — at the flat rate of 49 euros (54 dollars). As per France 24, the German government has launched this new initiative to encourage people to use public transport instead of cars as a way to reduce carbon emissions.

The "Deutschlandticket" or the "Germany ticket" initiative offers travellers a flat-rate travel card that costs €49 ($54) per month — €588 ($645) per year and allows unlimited travel on public transport across the country, including buses, trams, and trains. However, it does not cover long-distance travel on buses or high-speed trains, such as the Intercity Express (ICE).

The German government has expressed a hope that this initiative will help to reduce the number of people using cars and, as a result, cut down the country's carbon footprint.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing labelled the initiative "the biggest public transport reform in German history."

However, the initiative's success is far from assured. According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), it is expected that only about 16 million people out of Germany's total population of 84 million will take advantage of the new flat-rate travel card.

Around 750,000 tickets have already been sold, but this number does not include those who plan to switch from their current transport subscriptions to the new initiative.

The travel card has been welcomed by environmental groups as an important step towards fighting climate change.

However, critics have argued that the card is too expensive and that it will not be accessible to everyone — for the poorest people in society — they also point to the fact that there are no concessions for students or people on low incomes.

Talking to AFP, transport expert Oliver Wittig said that the 49-euro ticket will particularly benefit "urban residents who already have a more expensive subscription."

The financing of Germany's new flat-rate travel card was the subject of lengthy debate, which contributed to the delay in its rollout.

Eventually, an agreement was reached between the federal government and the country's states to each contribute 1.5 billion euros towards the financing of the initiative. This was done to avoid adding to the national rail operator's existing debt pile.

Despite this, the expenditure has faced criticism from the opposition, who argue that the money could have been better spent to " improve and renovate rail infrastructure."

The criticism of the expenditure on the flat-rate travel card has highlighted the significant investment needed to fix Germany's rail network. Official estimates suggest that around 8.6 billion euros a year will be required over the next decade to maintain and improve the network.

Germany is likely to put limits on export of chemicals to China that are used to manufacture semiconductors. The move is seen as part of the government's efforts to reduce its economic exposure to the world's second largest economy, Bloomberg news reported on Thursday.

The move is currently in the early stages of discussion in Berlin's corridors of power.

What does it mean?

Such a move could damage Berlin's ties with Beijing as Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government continues to press for fairer market access while viewing China as a strategic rival.

If Germany pressed ahead with the curbs, it would be following partner countries of the European Union that have taken similar steps. These steps are seen to have been taken with a view to cut China off from certain supplies for micro-chip making.

The quickest and most practical way to implement the export controls would be to put the respective goods and services on Germany's national dual-use list, one of the people cited by Bloomberg said.

German magazine Der Spiegel has come under heavy scrutiny from Indians after it published a cartoon that many deemed to have racist undertones. After a UN report stated that India was set to overtake China as the world's most populous country by mid-year, the magazine published a cartoon on the topic but could not hide its casual racism in the garb of creative freedom. The cartoon showed a dilapidated, overcrowded Indian train with passengers sitting atop the roof overtaking a modern Chinese bullet train running on the parallel track with just two drivers inside. The image attempted to portray that India had gone ahead of China in the population count but used a stereotypical view of things. As soon as the cartoon went viral, netizens made it a point to remind the German magazine that India had changed considerably in the last few decades. Germany: At least three killed after train hits vehicle at rail crossing near Hannover

In response to Berlin's claim that some Russian diplomats had departed Germany, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced on Saturday that Moscow was expelling around 34 German diplomats, according to RIA Novosti.

Following the expulsion announcement of German diplomats by Russia, a German foreign ministry official said Berlin and Moscow had been in touch about their respective representations in the last few weeks with the aim of reducing Russia’s intelligence presence in Germany, Reuters reports.

"Today's departure of Russian embassy staff is related to this," said the official. The German ministry declined to say how many Russian diplomats had left.

Since Moscow deployed its armed forces into Ukraine in February 2022 and the West responded with sanctions and weaponry for Ukraine, relations between Russia and Germany, which used to be the main customer of Russian oil and gas, have deteriorated.

Commenting on Germany's expulsions, the Russian Foreign Ministry said: "We strongly condemn these actions by Berlin, which continues to demonstratively destroy the entire array of Russian-German relations."

According to the German daily Bild, 34 of the 90 German diplomats still stationed in Moscow have been ordered to leave the country.

The maximum number of staff at German diplomatic missions will also be restricted, according to Moscow, which claimed that Germany's ambassador, Geza Andreas von Geyr, was informed of the measures on April 5.

Oil and natural gas are major industries in the energy market. They play an influential role in the country's economy. These oil and gas industries are, however, in a looming state in Germany. Germany plans to ban the installation of most oil and gas heating systems from next year. The proposal was approved, triggering angry divisions in the cabinet. The radical plans are designed to transform Germany’s heating systems.

Why is Germany planning to ban the installation of most oil & gas heating from 2024?

After having changed the French President Emmanuel Macron's stance regarding the Taiwan issue, China is hoping that Germany starts accepting its version as well. Beijing's top diplomat Wang Yi said he “hopes and believes” Germany will support China’s “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan.

Wang made the statement during his meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock who is on a state visit to the country.

“To maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait, it is necessary to firmly oppose separatist activities related to ‘Taiwan independence’,” said Wang, who added that Taiwan's 'return to China' was an important part of post-World War II international order.

Baerbock, meanwhile, did not deviate from the normal and stated that any escalation in the region would not be an ideal situation.

"A military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, through which 50 per cent of world trade goes every day, would be a horror scenario for the entire world," said Baerbock.

The German side's comments were seemingly different from what Macron had said following his three-day state trip to Beijing.

Macron warned that the European Union must not take the US or Chinese side when it comes to the Taiwan issue. It was the first instance that Macron had displayed such clarity on the issue which has not gone down well with the allies.

“The question Europeans need to answer...is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction,” Macron was quoted as saying in an interview after his recent visit to China.

“Stability in the Taiwan Strait is of paramount importance. The threat [of] the use of force to change the status quo is unacceptable," said the French president.

China 'hopes' Germany will support its 'peaceful reunification' with Taiwan

There seems to be a divide in Europe regarding the usage of nuclear power plants while on one hand Germany has put an end to nuclear energy after shutting down its last remaining nuclear power plants on the other hand Europe's largest nuclear reactor will start regular output in Finland the question that arises here is how divided is Europe on nuclear power?

Europe divided on nuclear power

On the one hand, Germany has ended its reliance on nuclear energy by shutting down its last remaining nuclear power plants. On the other hand, Europe's largest nuclear reactor will begin producing electricity on a regular basis in Finland in an effort to boost energy security in the area that has been impacted by Russia's conflict in Ukraine.

Gravitas Global Headlines: German foreign minister on China-Taiwan

After a decades-long dispute which had divided Germany, the country has finally decided that on Saturday (April 15), it will pull the plug on its last three nuclear power stations and there has been a range of reactions. Europe’s largest economy which is also one of its biggest emitters of carbon will, in the short term, go back to using coal.

A brief history

Germany began its commercial nuclear sector with the Kahl reactor in 1961 which was later joined by seven commercial plants in the early years and with the 1970s oil crisis it garnered public support.

Former West Germany has long supported the anti-nuclear movement even before the German unification where hundreds of thousands of mostly young people would take to the streets. As of 20 years ago, 19 nuclear power plant units supplied up to a third of the country’s electricity.

It was not until the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the then-Soviet Union that some of the warnings and dangers of nuclear power were confirmed. However, various governing parties in Germany like the Christian Democrats (CDU), the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) have still stood firmly behind the use of nuclear power for decades now.

However, it is also worth noting that the governing SPD, Greens, and the FDP in their coalition agreement had decided to stick to former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision for Germany’s nuclear phase-out.

Why is this a big deal?

At midnight, Berlin would mark the six-decade programme which has witnessed some of the strongest protest movements in the continent. The smoking towers of Isar II, Emsland and Neckarwestheim II reactors will be shut as Germany will enact its plan for fully-renewable electricity generation by 2035.

The nuclear-phase out plan has been in motion since 2002 but gained momentum when Merkel was chancellor in 2011 and following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

Additionally, Germany’s strong anti-nuclear movement which still holds lingering fears from the Cold War conflict and nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl in Ukraine had pressured successive governments to end the use of a technology that critics have argued is unsafe and unsustainable.

What was the holdup?

The three plants were scheduled to be turned off by December 2022, however, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine over a year ago, they received a brief extension. Europe’s largest economy like others was also grappling with the fallout of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and scrambled to find substitutes for Moscow’s cheap pipeline gas.

The government in Berlin, like the rest of Europe, was not sure if they would be able to power themselves through the winter. Notably, the situation in Germany was relatively stable when compared to others which can be attributed to the country’s natural gas buying spree and the firing up of old coal power plants.

But given the uncertainty over power supply, incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced he would keep the nuclear plants going for three and a half more months, extending the initial December deadline to April 15.

Does everyone agree with this decision?

According to Deutsche Welle (DW), the shutdown also comes at the end of 22,596 days and plenty of heated debate. Many lawmakers across the political spectrum took to Twitter and expressed their views on the decision. “Goodbye nuclear power! Goodbye insecure, unclean, uneconomical energy policy!” said Scholz. While his party SPD on their official page showed an image of a collapsing nuclear power plant cooling tower.

On the other hand, the FDP leader and Finance Minister Christian Lindner took to the microblogging platform and said he was not happy with the decision. While agreeing that renewable energy is the future he said that “in the meantime we have to secure our supply until we have sufficient capacity,” adding that if it were up to him Germany would retain the last three power plants in reserve.

Environmental groups celebrate

Environmental groups marked the day with celebrations outside the three reactors and rallies in major cities, including Berlin. Greenpeace, an environmental NGO, organised a demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate on Saturday and said, “Finally, nuclear energy belongs to history!”. Meanwhile, Munich celebrated a “nuclear exit festival” which witnessed the presence of several hundred people to mark the milestone.

What next?

Germany’s government has previously agreed that in the short term, the country would have to rely on coal and natural gas to meet its energy needs. This comes as Germany aims to be carbon neutral by 2045 and has been ramping up its electricity production from solar and wind. As of last year, the three soon-to-be dismantled plants accounted for only six per cent of the country’s energy.

Meanwhile, several nuclear power plants will undergo the costly process of dismantling while figuring out what to do with the highly radioactive material accumulated over six decades. Germany still needs to find a permanent repository for around 1,900 highly radioactive casks of nuclear waste by 2031.

“Nuclear power supplied electricity for three generations, but its legacy remains dangerous for 30,000 generations,” said Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, as per Euronews. He added that many risks of civilian atomic facilities were unconsidered, including their becoming targets during conflicts.
