A little more than a decade after scientists discovered the remains of a 16-year-old&nbsp;Anglo-Saxon girl in UK's Cambridgeshire who died more than 1,300 years ago, they have managed to reveal her face using facial reconstruction.&nbsp;

To succeed in their endeavour, scientists analysed the girl's skull to create a life-like reconstruction which showed how she looked prior to her untimely death. However, without DNA analysis, forensic artists could not render precise eye and hair colour.&nbsp;

The new image shows she had a fair face with pale skin, a rather petite nose, pronounced cheekbones and one eye slightly lower than the other.&nbsp;

"It was interesting to see her face developing.&nbsp;Her left eye was slightly lower, about half a centimetre, than her right eye; this would have been quite noticeable in life," said&nbsp;Hew Morrison, the facial reconstruction artist who rendered the image.&nbsp;

The girl's skeleton was found buried in a wooden bed with a gold and garnet cross on her chest. Despite being discovered in 2012 by British archaeologists, scientists are unsure about the origins of the 'Trumpington girl'. They posit that she may have migrated from Germany to England as a young girl who was part of an early Christian group, spreading the teaching of Jesus.

<h2>Her diet may have changed: Scientists&nbsp;</h2>

Some reports indicate that the girl may have died from illness but the true cause remains unknown.&nbsp;The scientists say upon arriving in England, the proportion of protein in the girl's diet decreased by a small but significant amount. Although it is not clear if it had anything to do with her death.&nbsp;

"We now know the proportion of protein dropped, suggesting she was eating more meat and dairy products when in southern Germany than on arrival in Trumpington,"&nbsp;Anglo-Saxon specialist Dr Sam Lucy was quoted as saying by BBC.&nbsp;

Germany's domestic intelligence agency has warned that Russia's spy operations are expected to increase in the nation. This comes as Moscow launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, raising concerns about the safety and security of neighboring countries.

A sword, made of bronze and estimated to be more than 3,000 years old, was unearthed in southern Germany in such a well-preserved state that it “almost still shines”, officials said.

The Bavarian state office for the preservation of historical monuments (BLfD) stated that the newly-discovered sword, which is estimated to date back to the end of the 14th century BC, which is the middle phase of the bronze age, was discovered during excavations being conducted in Nordlingen, between Nuremberg and Stuttgart, last week.

There is an octagonal hilt on the sword and it was found in a grave in which three people were buried in quick succession - a man, a woman and a boy - with bronze objects, stated the BLfD this week. The archaeologists are still not clear if the three people were related to each other or not, or if so how.

<h2>'A very rare find'</h2>

Head of the BLfD Prof Mathias Pfeil said: “The sword and the burial still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can categorise this find more precisely. But we can already say that the state of preservation is extraordinary. A find like this is very rare.”

“It is unusual to find swords from the period, but they have emerged from burial mounds that were opened in the 19th century or as individual finds,” the BLfD stated.

According to the translation of the statement release, the excavated item represents the bronze full-hilt swords (octagonal sword type) in which bronze has been used to make the entire octagonal hilt.

As per a report published by LiveScience, archaeologists emphasised that the sword, which has been estimated to belong to the 14th century BC, is a rare find as discoveries made from this era and region are rare since people have looted many Middle Bronze Age graves over the millennia.

According to archaeologists, such octagonal swords can only be made by skilled smiths. There are two rivets over the handle which were cast over the blade using a technique known as overlay casting.

“However, the blade doesn't have any visible cut marks or signs of wear, suggesting that it had a ceremonial or symbolic purpose,” as per the statement released.

The experts have suggested that the sword must have easily served as an active weapon since the centre of gravity on the front end of the blade suggests that it could have slashed opponents effectively.

An American man accused of attacking two women from the United States in the German state of Bavaria, last week, which led to the death of one of them and seriously injured the other, has been charged with murder and attempted murder, said the officials. The two women were later identified as recent college graduates from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.&nbsp;

<h2>What we know about the incident and the victims</h2>

The incident took place on Wednesday (June 14) afternoon near one of Germany’s most popular tourist sights, Neuschwanstein Castle’s Marienbruecke, which is a bridge over a gorge close to the castle. According to the German police, one American tourist, later identified as 21-year-old Eva Liu, was allegedly attacked by a 30-year-old American man she had met while hiking.&nbsp;

Liu, who had recently received her bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, was allegedly sexually assaulted before being pushed off a steep slope near the castle. In a previous statement, the police had said the 30-year-old man met the two female tourists on a hiking path, he then went on to lure them onto a hidden trail that leads to a viewpoint.

He then “physically attacked” the 21-year-old.&nbsp;This prompted her friend, later identified as 22-year-old&nbsp;Kelsey Chang, to intervene and he choked her and pushed her down a steep slope. After the incident, both women were taken to a hospital by helicopter where Liu succumbed to what is being described as serious injuries. As per the initial investigation police also found that Liu fell some 50 metres while a tree reportedly broke Chang’s fall.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the suspect?</h2>

So far, the officials in Germany have not revealed the identity of the alleged attacker except that he is 30 years old and also an American tourist. He was arrested shortly after the incident after fleeing from the scene after the crime.&nbsp;

Germany: American man charged with murder for attacking US women near Neuschwanstein castle

Ukrainian saboteurs may have been involved in the destruction of the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline that was subjected to intense shelling earlier this month, according to classified German defence ministry documents accessed by The Bild.&nbsp;

The report, citing experts from the German defence ministry claims that Ukrainians are sabotaging far beyond the line of contact in order to weaken the Russian forces. The report notes "participation of the Ukrainian side in the destruction of the pipeline [Togliatti-Odessa]" cannot be ruled out. It added that the facility was located in the territory controlled by the armed forces of Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>Moscow blamed Kyiv for the attack</h2>

The revelation by the publication matches the version of the Russian authorities who had blamed Ukrainian forces for the destruction job.&nbsp;Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov claimed the attack on the pipeline&nbsp;was a terrorist act.&nbsp;

“At about 9:00 p.m. Moscow time on June 5, a Ukrainian subversive and reconnaissance group blew up the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline near the settlement of Masyutovka in the Kharkov Region. Civilians were injured as a result of this terrorist act,” the spokesman said.&nbsp;

"At present ammonia residues are being blown out of the damaged sections of the pipeline from Ukrainian territory. There are no casualties among Russian servicemen," he added.&nbsp;

The destroyed pipeline is the world's largest ammonia pipeline and sustained damage after heavy shelling in a contested part of the country's northeastern Kharkiv region.

Ammonia is a key ingredient used in nitrate fertiliser, of which Russia is a leading producer. However, ammonia&nbsp;is also highly toxic and can cause severe irritation of the lungs, throat, nose and eyes.&nbsp;

Ukrainian saboteurs may have destroyed Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline: Reports

India urged Germany to send Indian baby&nbsp;back to the country at the earliest asserting that it is important for the child to be in her linguistic, religious, cultural and social environment.

The child has been living in foster care in Berlin for over 20 months. The German authorities had taken her custody on September 23, 2021, when she was seven months old.

As per ANI reports, the baby was accidentally hurt by her grandmother in September 2021 after which the German authorities took her away.

While addressing the briefing on Friday, EAM spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "We are dismayed to learn that the child was abruptly shifted away from her current foster parent to a specialised foster care arrangement. The manner in which this shift was carried out is a matter of concern. We and the parents believe that this rapid change is not in the child's best interest and could have far-reaching consequences for her emotional and mental development."

He further stated, "We would like to reiterate that the baby is an Indian national and her nationality and socio-cultural background is the most important determinant of where her foster care is to be provided. We urge German authorities to do all that is necessary to send the baby&nbsp;to India at the earliest, which is also her inalienable right as an Indian national. We remain committed to ensuring the return of the child to India."

Talking about the case, Bagchi said that the Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India, Berlin, have been persistently advocating for the return of the child&nbsp;to India, "The child is an Indian national and she was placed in the custody of Germany's Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) on 23 September 2021, when she was 7 months old. She has now been in foster care for more than 20 months," he said. &nbsp;

"Cultural background is the most important determinant of where her foster care is to be provided. We urge German authorities to do all that is necessary to send [name of the child] to India at the earliest, which is also her inalienable right as an Indian national. We remain committed to ensuring the return of the baby to India."

"The German authorities have been made aware of India's child protection system and the details of potential foster parents have also been shared with them," he said.

"The child's continued placement in German foster care and infringement of her social, cultural and linguistic rights is of deep concern to the Government of India and the parents."

<h2>Jaishankar conveys concerns over bringing child back to his German counterpart</h2>

Last year, in the month of December, Indian EAM Jaishankar conveyed to his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock the concerns over bringing the baby girl back to India.

"Our efforts have been guided by the best interests of the child, which we believe can be fully realised only when she is in her home country where her socio-cultural rights can be safeguarded," Bagchi said.

"Accordingly, we have been requesting Germany to return the child to India. The embassy has repeatedly requested German authorities to ensure that [child's name]'s connection with her cultural, religious and linguistic background is not compromised and sought consular access to the child," he added.

Bagchi said Baerbock, during her visit to India, had also conveyed that the German side was also bearing in mind the cultural identity of each child that is taken care of by the youth offices in Germany.

"Unfortunately our requests in this regard for safeguarding the child's national and cultural identity have not been met," he said.

We and the parents believe that this rapid change is not in the child's best interest and could have far-reaching consequences for her emotional and mental development." He further stated, "We would like to reiterate that the baby is an Indian national and her nationality and socio-cultural background is the most important determinant of where her foster care is to be provided. We urge German authorities to do all that is necessary to send the baby to India at the earliest, which is also her inalienable right as an Indian national. We remain committed to ensuring the return of the child to India." Talking about the case, Bagchi said that the Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India, Berlin, have been persistently advocating for the return of the child to India, "The child is an Indian national and she was placed in the custody of Germany's Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) on 23 September 2021, when she was 7 months old. She has now been in foster care for more than 20 months," he said. "Cultural background is the most important determinant of where her foster care is to be provided. We urge German authorities to do all that is necessary to send [name of the child] to India at the earliest, which is also her inalienable right as an Indian national. We remain committed to ensuring the return of the baby to India." "The German authorities have been made aware of India's child protection system and the details of potential foster parents have also been shared with them," he said. "The child's continued placement in German foster care and infringement of her social, cultural and linguistic rights is of deep concern to the Government of India and the parents." Jaishankar conveys concerns over bringing child back to his German counterpart Last year, in the month of December, Indian EAM Jaishankar conveyed to his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock the concerns over bringing the baby girl back to India. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

India presses Germany to send back Indian baby in Berlin foster care, calls it ‘infringement of rights’

German authorities have arrested an American man after he allegedly assaulted two female tourists also from the United States near southern Germany’s Neuschwanstein castle and pushed them down a steep slope. The incident led to the death of one woman, said the local officials on Thursday (June 15).&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the incident so far?</h2>

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon near one of Germany’s most popular tourist sights, Neuschwanstein Castle’s Marienbruecke which is a bridge over a gorge close to the castle. As per the officials, a 30-year-old man allegedly attempted to sexually assault two women and is said to have pushed both of them off a steep slope.&nbsp;

In a statement, the police said that the 30-year-old man met the two female tourists, ages 21 and 22, on a hiking path, he then went on to lure them onto a hidden trail that leads to a viewpoint. He then “physically attacked” the 21-year-old and the 22-year-old intervened and he choked her and pushed her down a steep slope.

After the incident, the 21-year-old woman was taken to a hospital by helicopter but succumbed to what is being described as serious injuries. Meanwhile, her 22-year-old companion who was described as “responsive” is still in the hospital but details about her injuries or condition were not immediately known. According to prosecutors, the 22-year-old remained hospitalised as of Thursday.&nbsp;

“According to the current state of knowledge, an attempted sexual offence to the detriment of the 21-year-old must be assumed,” said the local officials. The police also said that the 21-year-old was also pushed down the slope and fell nearly 50 metres.&nbsp;

<h2>Where is&nbsp;the suspect?</h2>

Police in the German state of Bavaria later said that the alleged attacker is a 30-year-old US national who had fled the scene after the crime, but was later caught and is in custody. The suspect is also said to be an American tourist, as per the police. The authorities have not identified the victims as well as the suspect.&nbsp;

The 30-year-old man, as per police, is currently in jail after a judge in nearby Kempten issued an arrest warrant on Thursday and ordered them to keep him in custody pending a potential indictment.&nbsp;

The country’s criminal police have taken over the investigation and are looking into suspicion of murder, attempted murder and a sexual offence. However, their investigation is reportedly being hampered due to the steep terrain where the alleged attack took place.&nbsp;

The police as well as the prosecutors are in the midst of reconstructing exactly how the incident took place, said officials. Neuschwanstein castle is located in the German state of Bavaria and close to the Austrian border.&nbsp;

Germany: US woman killed in attack near Neuschwanstein castle, suspect arrested

The organisation that handles claims on behalf of Jews who endured torture at the hands of the Nazis, said on Thursday (June 15) that Germany has agreed to extend another monetary support of $1.4 billion overall to Holocaust survivors all over the globe for the year 2024.&nbsp;

<meta charset="utf-8" />

The compensation was a result of negotiations with Germany's finance ministry and entails $888.9 million to provide housing care and supportive services for weak and the most vulnerable Holocaust survivors.

“Every year these negotiations become more and more critical as this last generation of Holocaust survivors age and their needs increase," Greg Schneider, the Claims Conference’s executive vice president told the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Increases of $175 million to symbolic payments of the Hardship Fund Supplemental program have also been achieved, impacting more than 128,000 Holocaust survivors globally, as per the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, also referred to as the Claims Conference.

"Being able to ensure direct payments to survivors in addition to the expansions to the social welfare services is essential in making sure every Holocaust survivor is taken care of for as long as it is required, addressing each individual need,” Schneider added.

The Hardship Fund Supplemental payment was originally set to be a one-time payment, negotiated during the COVID-19 lockdowns and eventually resulted in three supplemental payments for eligible Holocaust survivors.&nbsp;

In 2023, Germany again agreed to offer the hardship payment, which was set to expire in December 2023, through 2027.

The amount for each of the additional years was set at approximately $1,370 per person for 2024, $1,425 for 2025, $1,480 for 2026 and $1,534 for 2027, reported the Associated Press.

The survivors getting these payments largely are Russian Jews who weren't in camps or ghettos, and aren't eligible for pension programs, the Claims Conference said.

They fled the so-called Einsatzgruppen — Nazi mobile killing units charged with murdering entire Jewish communities as juveniles.&nbsp;More than one&nbsp;million Jews lost their lives in these units, which worked&nbsp;largely by shooting hundreds and thousands of Jews at a time and burying them in mass pits.

“For those who were able to flee and survive — they are some of the poorest in the survivor community; the loss of time, family, property and life cannot be made whole,” the group said.

“By expanding payments to these survivors, the German government is acknowledging that this suffering is still being felt deeply, both emotionally and financially,” the group said in a statement. “While symbolic, these payments provide financial relief for many ageing Jewish Holocaust survivors living around the world,” it added.

At present, the Holocaust survivors are all elderly and many suffer from various medical issues because of the lack of proper nutrition in their growing years.

As the number of survivors plummets, the Claims Conference also negotiated continuing funding for Holocaust education, which has been extended for two more years and puffed up every year by $3.3 million. The newly negotiated funding amounts stand at approximately $41.6 million for 2026 and $45 million for 2027.

Germany on Wednesday (June 14) approved an advance payment for the purchase of the sophisticated Arrow 3 air defence system from Israel. The go-ahead has been given by the lawmakers for nearly $4.3 billion, news agencies reported.&nbsp;

According to the procurement documents by the finance ministry that were prepared for the parliament, Berlin is focusing on finalising a government-to-government deal with Israel on the purchase of the Arrow-3 system at the end of the year with this move. The Arrow-3 system has been produced by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).&nbsp;

According to the papers cited by news agency Reuters, Germany will lose part or all of its advance payments if the deal fails. It is mentioned that the money would be used to compensate Israel for costs incurred in such a scenario.&nbsp;

The German air force is supposed to take delivery of Arrow-3 by the fourth quarter of 2025 and the final deal will cost about one billion euros more than originally planned.&nbsp;

A committee source told the news agency AFP that around 950 million euros were also approved for the purchase of six German-made Iris-T SLM air defence systems.&nbsp;

The deal comes after a landmark 100-billion-euro fund unveiled by Chancellor Olaf Scholz to bolster the country's defences. The announcement marked a major turnaround for Germany after years of under-investment in the armed forces.

The West has been accusing Russia's blackmailing Europe over gas supplies ever since the Ukraine war started and now Germany has said that it may have to shut down industrial capacity if Ukraine's Gas Transit agreement with Russia is not extended. The deal is expected to end by 2024 and German economy Minister Robert Habeck says that lawmakers should avoid making the same mistake of assuming that the economy will be unaffected without any precautions to safeguard energy supplies.

In a new survey, the data collected revealed that a third of young men in Germany believe that using violence against women is acceptable. The study led to outrage among gender equality campaigners.

Children’s charity Plan International Germany had commissioned the survey and the regional newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung had published its findings.

In the study, which was carried out online, a group of 1,000 men and 1,000 women between the age of 18 to 35 from across the country were asked to submit their views on masculinity.

<h2>Violence to 'instil respect' in women, say men</h2>

In the study, 34 per cent of men accepted using violence against their female partner in the past years to “instil respect in them”. Meanwhile, 33 per cent said that they found it acceptable if their “hand slipped” occasionally during an argument with their female partners.

The study, which explored attitudes ranging from victim-blaming and double standards, found that 50 per cent of men stated they would not like to be in a relationship with a woman who previously had many sexual partners, while 20 per cent of the women in the survey also agreed with this fact.

The survey also stated that there was difference in the expectations of men and women within a relationship.

More than half of men – around 52 per cent – looking for a relationship in the form of a “breadwinner-housewife model,” where most of the money for the household was earned by them and household tasks as well as childcare were primarily the woman’s role.

More than two-thirds of the women disagreed with these views in the survey and said that they wanted equal partnerships and shared decision-making.

Less than half of respondents – 48 per cent– said that they disliked public displays of homosexuality, adding that they felt “disturbed” by it.

Taking to Twitter, the German group Federal Organisation for Equality said that the findings were “shocking.”

It added, “According to a survey by Plan International Germany, every third young man finds violence against women ‘acceptable’. This urgently needs to change!”

Karsten Kassner from Federal Forum Men, an organisation which stands for gender equality, called for change and said, “It’s problematic that a third of the surveyed men trivialize physical violence against women.”

As per data collected by Germany’s Federal Criminal Police (BKA), 115,000 women in the country have been victims of domestic violence in 2021.

The survey also stated that there was difference in the expectations of men and women within a relationship. More than half of men – around 52 per cent – looking for a relationship in the form of a “breadwinner-housewife model,” where most of the money for the household was earned by them and household tasks as well as childcare were primarily the woman’s role. More than two-thirds of the women disagreed with these views in the survey and said that they wanted equal partnerships and shared decision-making. Taking to Twitter, the German group Federal Organisation for Equality said that the findings were “shocking.” It added, “According to a survey by Plan International Germany, every third young man finds violence against women ‘acceptable’. This urgently needs to change!” Karsten Kassner from Federal Forum Men, an organisation which stands for gender equality, called for change and said, “It’s problematic that a third of the surveyed men trivialize physical violence against women.” As per data collected by Germany’s Federal Criminal Police (BKA), 115,000 women in the country have been victims of domestic violence in 2021. Germany has recorded&nbsp;that climate activists from the Last Generation or Letzte Generation have allegedly committed 580 criminal offences, reported German weekly Bild am Sonntag, citing the country’s interior minister, on Sunday (June 11). This comes weeks after the German police carried out raids across seven states targeting activists from the climate advocacy group.&nbsp;

<h2>What can the activists&nbsp;be accused of?</h2>

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the German weekly that the country’s Federal Criminal Police Office in its first-ever report of the situation has said 580 criminal charges can be assigned to the Last Generation since the beginning of last year. This comes as some 740 people have “come to the attention of the police,” Faeser told Bild.&nbsp;

The climate activist group has been using controversial methods of protest in Germany which have included glueing themselves on the road. Faeser also told Bild that most of the potential charges are “mainly about coercion and property damage”.&nbsp;

<h2>Interior minister criticises group’s methods of protest&nbsp;</h2>

During the interview with the German newspaper, the interior minister spoke about how it is unacceptable for the activists to “violate the rights of others”.&nbsp;

Speaking about their methods of protest, Fraser also said it is not helping climate protection and on the contrary activists are “massively damaging” their chances of being accepted or raising awareness.&nbsp;

However, the Last Generation activists have previously said that their rights are being violated by companies, lawmakers, and people who are not doing enough to protect the environment.&nbsp;

The group has been making headlines in different countries with protests like road blockades to throwing soup on famous artworks, steps which have garnered both support and criticism. Additionally, last week, a member of the climate advocacy group was charged a $430 fine for damage to property after a protest at the Audimax of Hamburg University.&nbsp;

<h2>Police crackdown last month</h2>

The police in Germany, in late May, conducted raids shortly after the group’s street blockades which aimed at investigating seven people aged between 22 to 38, for allegedly supporting or attempting to create a criminal organisation. In a statement, the police said that the suspects have been accused of “organising a fundraising campaign to finance the criminal acts committed” by Last Generation.&nbsp;

It added that they were “propagating these acts on their website and collecting a sum of at least 1.4 million euros ($1.5 million) in donations”. According to environmentalists in the country, the lawmakers in Germany have put their climate policies on the back burner as Europe was grappling with an energy crisis.&nbsp;

Speaking of their demands from the German government, Last Generation told WION, shortly after the raids, that there is a need for a “social council that leads us out of the climate crisis in a socially just way.”&nbsp;

Climate activists in Germany accused of 580 offences

The eurozone entered a technical recession in the first three months of 2023 as soaring energy prices and rising interest rates drove inflation higher. The eurozone is made up of 20 member countries of the European Union (EU) that have adopted the euro (€) as their primary currency and sole legal tender.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is riding high in the polls to the alarm of mainstream parties and is on track to win three state votes in the east of the country with calls to stop migration and curb what it sees as a costly green agenda.

AfD is polling 17-19% nationwide, around a record high for the party that now vies with Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats for second place in some surveys, up from fifth in the 2021 election when it secured 10.3% of the vote.

It was last at such highs in 2018 after Europe's migrant crisis. This time, the nationalist, anti-immigrant party has also benefited from infighting in Scholz's three-way coalition.

Far-right parties have gained ground across Europe. In France, the far-right has become a stronger rival at the ballot box, while in Italy and Sweden, they are now are in government.

But the rise of the AfD, which lambasts the German government for high immigration levels, surging inflation and a costly green transition, touches a particularly sensitive nerve in Germany because of the country's Nazi past.

Germany's domestic spy agency has branded the AfD's youth wing "extremist", saying it propagated "a racial concept of society". The spy agency's head has also accused the AfD, which opposes sanctions on Russia, of helping spread Russian propaganda about the Ukraine war.

Germany's main parties have ruled out cooperating with the AfD to keep it out of government, but the AfD's critics worry that it is dragging mainstream politics further right.

"We are seeing the rhetoric on topics like migration get shriller," said Stefan Marschall, political scientist at the University of Duesseldorf.

Migration is moving up Germany's political agenda. Michael Kretschmer, the premier of the east German state of Saxony and who is from the right of centre Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said last week that the number of migrants was "too big", calling for limits on refugees allowed in and cuts to benefits.

<h2>The cost of transition</h2>

The CDU's national leader, Friederich Merz, has however dismissed any comparisons with the AfD, saying in comments on Sunday that his party's language was "nothing like" the AfD's.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has partly blamed the AfD for stoking anti-immigrant attitudes that have fuelled a rise in attacks on refugees. The AfD denies this.

The AfD, which disputes that human activity is a cause of climate change, has also tapped into concerns among some voters about the cost of the transition away from fossil fuels.

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla said more voters appreciated that the policies of the Greens, Scholz's junior coalition partner which wants a swifter shift away from hydrocarbons, brought "economic war, inflation and de-industrialisation."

"We are the only party that would not form a coalition with these dangerous Greens," he said.

In Thueringen, Saxony and Brandenburg, the east German states that are holding state elections in 2024, the AfD is on track to top voting for the first time, with surveys showing its support at 23%-28%.

Analysts say voters in the east, where party loyalties are less well-established, have been more receptive to the AfD in part because they blame mainstream parties that have rotated through various governments over the years for lower incomes that persist in the east, three decades after reunification.

Even if the AfD's is kept out of power, its rise has sucked votes from other parties, forcing them into more unwieldy coalitions at state and national levels, particularly in the east where the AfD is strongest.

<h2>Wave of discontent</h2>

Marc Debus, a political scientist at Mannheim University, said it could bolster calls among some voters for conservatives in particular to work more closely with the AfD, even if not in a formal coalition, rather than aligning with the left.

Some AfD initiatives have won backing from mainstream voters on the more local level. In December, members of the CDU in the small town of Bautzen in Saxony voted in favour of an AfD proposal to cut some benefits, such as language courses for migrants whose asylum applications had been rejected.

"This dogmatic way in Berlin of excluding the AfD, saying they are all Nazis, is wrong," said Matthias Grahl, head of the CDU in the Bautzen district council.

Others say the AfD is riding a wave of discontent because of a confluence of crises that will not last. Inflation has already dipped from its peak and sky-high energy prices over the winter, fuelled by the Ukraine war, have eased.

Wolfgang Buechner, a Scholz government spokesman, said he was confident the coalition could whittle away at AfD support.

"The chancellor is optimistic that if we do good work and solve the problems of this country ... then we will not need to worry much longer about this topic," he said.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday (June 6) that the process related to India's proposed procurement of six submarines was yet to be completed and that the German industry was at a "good place" in the race for the contract.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday (June 6) that the process related to India's proposed procurement of six submarines was yet to be completed and that the German industry was at a "good place" in the race for the contract. Pistorius arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a four-day visit to India, the first by a German defence minister since 2015. After holding wide-ranging talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Pistorious addressed a press conference where he was asked about the submarine deal. "The procedure is not finished yet, but I think the German industry is at a good place in that race," he told reporters. One of the top contenders for the contract is Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). Submarine project figures in talks between Pistorious, Singh According to a report by the news agency PTI, officials earlier said that India's plan to procure six stealth conventional submarines at a cost of around Rs 43,000 crore figured in the talks between Pistorius and Singh, and the former showed Germany's interest in the project. In June 2021, the Indian Defence Ministry cleared the project to domestically build six conventional submarines for the navy. The submarines would be built under the much-talked-about strategic partnership model that allows domestic defence manufacturers to join hands with leading foreign defence majors to produce high-end military platforms to reduce import dependence. Germany can do more in Indo-Pacific: Pistorious German Defence Minister Pistorious also said on Tuesday that his country could and ought to do more in the Indo-Pacific in a partnership with India given the sense of unpredictability surrounding it. "And we need strategic partners like Indonesia, like India, for example, to make sure that the law of free navigation and the free trading routes will be achievable during the next decade too," Pistorious said during the press conference and pointed out that Europe has a role to play in the Indo-Pacific region. "We have totally agreed about the German and European role in the Indo-Pacific. We agreed that more engagement of Europe and Germany is necessary to play a relevant part in that game — it is not a game, but you know what I mean," he added. The German defence minister also indicated that his country will deploy military assets in the Indo-Pacific next year as well. A German court has given an 82-year-old man a "last warning"&nbsp;to avoid imprisonment after he was found guilty of drug dealing for yet another time.

The court announced its verdict after discovering that the man had already been convicted 24 times for committing the very same crime.

As per the AP reports, the retired seaman was handed a suspended sentence by a court in the northern town of Aurich on Monday.

The accused said that he wanted to improve his sparse monthly pension, which was around 800 euros ($855), by selling marijuana.

The prosecutors had asked the court to impose a jail term of a minimum of 34 months in view of the man's lengthy criminal record and an existing suspended sentence, AP cited German news agency dpa as saying.

But, according to the reports, the judges said that taking the man's recent health problems and particular circumstances into consideration, they would make an exception and classify the latest crimes as "less serious offences".

As per AP, dpa quoted the presiding judge as telling the accused that it was his “very last warning.”&nbsp;

German defence minister says Thyssenkrupp AG is likely to bid for a project to supply 6 submarines for Indian navy. India is looking to boost domestic defence manufacturing as it aims to counter China's growing presence in Indian Ocean. In march, India approved a budget of $6.8 billion for its navy. Indian navy has 16 conventional submarines, 11 of them over 2 decades old, along with 2 indigenous nuclear-powered submarines. Western military manufacturers are attempting to wean new Delhi from its dependence on Russian gear. Thyssenkrupp AG’S marine arm & india’s mazagon dock shipbuilders are likely to jointly bid for the project. In anticipation of the pact, shares of the indian shipbuilding yard rose as much as 7.7% to a record high. Submarines are a key element of maritime strategy for modern naval warfare planners. Remember, germany is among india's indo-pacific allies. A bilateral defence cooperation agreement was signed in 2006, which provides framework for annual consultations.

China's growing presence in Indian Ocean: Germany nears deal to build submarines in India | Details

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on Monday said that the continuing dependence of India on Russian weapons is not in the interest of his country. The statement was made by the German minister ahead of his visit to New Delhi which is aimed at bolstering security ties.

Pistorius embarked on his first Asia tour after he became the country's defence minister in January.&nbsp;

He participated in the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday and held discussions with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Monday. On Tuesday, Pistorius will be meeting his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh.&nbsp;

In an interview with a German state-owned broadcaster, while speaking about if Germany will increase arms sales to India to alter the dependence of the country on Russian weapons, Pistorius said, “It is not up to Germany to change that on our own. This is an issue we have to solve jointly with other partners."

“But of course, we can’t have an interest in the long run that India is so dependent on Russia’s delivery of weapons or other materials. Therefore, we have to think about that, what we can do," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Sale of German submarines to India</h2>

Pistorius further hinted at German submarines' possible sale to India.

“When I will arrive in India, I will be accompanied by representatives of German defence industry companies and I want to send a signal that we are willing to support our reliable partners like Indonesia, and India. And that includes the possibility of delivering submarines, for example,” he added.&nbsp;

According to reports, Germany is a contender for the plan of the Indian Navy to acquire six conventional submarines worth $5.2 billion in an expected deal. The chances of Germany have increased since France’s Naval Group backed out of the project a year ago.

A major defence deal was signed by Germany with India in 1981 which included four HDW Type 209 submarines.&nbsp;

Speaking about German policies on defence exports, Pistorius stated, “We have to find a balance between delivering weapons, on the one hand, to our reliable partners, and on the other hand, to control and to limit delivering weapons all over the world. Because we don’t need really so many weapons anymore in the world.”

Pistorius further explained the focus of Germany on the Indo-Pacific by stating that the 21st century will be shaped by the region in terms of freedom of navigation, international economic challenges and security.&nbsp;

"Germany, which has adopted its own Indo-Pacific guidelines, may not have an “active role” in the region but will show a presence by deploying warships in the area," he stated.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on Monday said that the continuing dependence of India on Russian weapons is not in the interest of his country. The statement was made by the German minister ahead of his visit to New Delhi which is aimed at bolstering security ties. Pistorius embarked on his first Asia tour after he became the country's defence minister in January. He participated in the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday and held discussions with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Monday. On Tuesday, Pistorius will be meeting his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh. In an interview with a German state-owned broadcaster, while speaking about if Germany will increase arms sales to India to alter the dependence of the country on Russian weapons, Pistorius said, “It is not up to Germany to change that on our own. This is an issue we have to solve jointly with other partners." “But of course, we can’t have an interest in the long run that India is so dependent on Russia’s delivery of weapons or other materials. Therefore, we have to think about that, what we can do," he added. And that includes the possibility of delivering submarines, for example,” he added. According to reports, Germany is a contender for the plan of the Indian Navy to acquire six conventional submarines worth $5.2 billion in an expected deal. The chances of Germany have increased since France’s Naval Group backed out of the project a year ago. A major defence deal was signed by Germany with India in 1981 which included four HDW Type 209 submarines. Because we don’t need really so many weapons anymore in the world.” Pistorius further explained the focus of Germany on the Indo-Pacific by stating that the 21st century will be shaped by the region in terms of freedom of navigation, international economic challenges and security. "Germany, which has adopted its own Indo-Pacific guidelines, may not have an “active role” in the region but will show a presence by deploying warships in the area," he stated.
