Police in Germany on Thursday (July 20) warned residents of Berlin's southern suburbs to watch out for a potentially dangerous animal, suspected to be a lioness, that was on the loose. Early Thursday, police in Brandenburg issued the warning of an escaped wild animal and asked people in and around Kleinmachnow, Teltow and Stahnsdorf not to leave their houses and to bring their pets indoors.&nbsp;

The warning was later extended to southern areas of Berlin and an alert was sent on an official warning app that the animal was suspected to be a lioness, news agency Associated Press reported.

Speaking to a local broadcaster, police spokesperson Daniel Keip said that two men reported seeing a big cat running after a wild boar, and they recorded this on a phone. "Even experienced police officers had to confirm it is probably a lioness," Keip added.&nbsp;

The report said that neither of Berlin's zoos nor any circuses or animal shelters in the area were missing a lioness. Police increased their presence Kleinmachnow area and warned people of the possible danger.&nbsp;

However, there was no order to stay indoors and people were seen walking dogs and cycling. The local council, meanwhile, said that child daycare centres were open, but children were not being allowed into their outside yards.&nbsp;

Traders at the town’s market were recommended not to set up stalls.&nbsp;

Germany: Cops search for 'lioness on the loose' in Berlin, thousands told to stay indoors

German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, currently on a three-day visit to India, has emphasised the complexities of Germany's partnership with China.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of India Germany business forum, he addressed the challenges posed by China being Germany's largest trading partner and highlighted the risks associated with over-reliance on a single market, particularly when economic interests intertwine with political concerns.

"Partnership with China is a complicated one," stated Dr Habeck, acknowledging the substantial investments made by German and European companies in the Chinese market.&nbsp;

However, he also stressed the importance of diversification to mitigate risks, stating, "We can't decouple from China, and nobody wants that, but de-risking, diversification is of the highest importance."&nbsp;

Dr Habeck expressed optimism about enhancing collaboration and investments between Germany and India, stating, "There's a mutual interest from the German side, from the Indian side to strengthen our cooperation, creating a common trait."&nbsp;

The German vice-chancellor strongly condemned "Russian aggression on Ukraine", and called it an "unprecedented" event that has disrupted the peace order built in Europe after World War II.&nbsp;

Dr Habeck urged all democracies worldwide to take a clear and resolute political position, explaining, "This is not acceptable. In no way, this is acceptable."&nbsp;

As a response to Russia's actions, Germany and other European nations have imposed sanctions and provided military support to Ukraine.&nbsp;

Dr Habeck clarified that the sanction system allows for the purchase of crude oil but with a price cap, ensuring that it does not directly benefit Russia's war efforts. He emphasised, "The idea is not to make money out of it, bringing more money to Russia using this sanction system to benefit from it."

The German vice-chancellor, who is also the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action will meet Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, EAM S Jaishankar. He will also participate in the G20 Energy Ministers meeting in Goa.

Since the United States&nbsp;announced that it would send the controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine for the first time amid Kyiv’s counteroffensive, it has drawn opposition and criticism from its allies in Europe, the United Nations, and international organisations. Meanwhile, Kyiv, on Saturday (July 8), welcoming Washington’s decision said that cluster bombs would be used for retaking Ukrainian territory and vowed not to use them in Moscow.&nbsp;

<h2>About cluster munition</h2>

Cluster munitions have been widely denounced for killing and maiming civilians as they typically release large numbers of smaller bomblets which had targets indiscriminately over a wide area, threatening civilians. Additionally, some of the small bomblets do not explode when deployed and can pose a danger for years after a conflict ends.

<h2>How different countries reacted to US’ decision</h2>

The announcement of sending Ukraine cluster munitions&nbsp;as&nbsp;part of an $800 million security package, was made on Friday and announced by US President Joe Biden’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan. “We recognise that cluster munitions create a risk of civilian harm from unexploded ordnance,” said the White House official.&nbsp;

He added, “This is why we’ve deferred the decision for as long as we could.” Subsequently, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-defends-decision-to-provide-cluster-bombs-to-ukraine-says-they-are-running-out-of-ammunition-613291">Biden</a> also defended his decision to provide cluster bombs to Ukraine, calling it a “very difficult” one.

Germany

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the country, as a part of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/germany-opposes-sending-cluster-munitions-to-ukraine-foreign-minister-613349">opposes</a> Washington’s decision.&nbsp;

Baerbock told reporters, “I have followed the media reports. For us, as a state party, the Oslo agreement applies."&nbsp;She made the statement in reference&nbsp;to the CCM, which was opened for signature in the Norwegian capital in 2008.&nbsp;

The CCM bans the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of cluster munitions. The US, along with countries like China and Russia, is not a part of the treaty which bans the bombs in more than 100 countries.&nbsp;

United Kingdom

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Saturday, also announced Britain’s opposition to sending cluster munitions to Ukraine in line with the CCM, while reiterating support for Kyiv. “We will continue to do our part to support Ukraine against Russia's illegal and unprovoked invasion,” said the British PM.&nbsp;

Spain

Similarly, the Spanish defence minister, Margarita Robles, on Saturday also said that cluster bombs should not be sent to help Ukraine. Spain is also a signatory of CCM, in line with which, it has also banned cluster munitions. She went on to reiterate Spain’s support for Ukraine.&nbsp;

“Spain, based on the firm commitment it has with Ukraine, also has a firm commitment that certain weapons and bombs cannot be delivered under any circumstances,” said Robles. She added, “No to cluster bombs and yes to the legitimate defence of Ukraine, which we understand should not be carried out with cluster bombs.”&nbsp;

Canada

Canada also expressed its opposition to Washington’s decision and reiterated its commitment to the Oslo agreement. “We do not support the use of cluster munitions and are committed to putting an end to the effects cluster munitions have on civilians – particularly children,” said the Canadian government.&nbsp;

It added, “Canada is fully compliant with the Convention and we take seriously our obligation under the Convention to encourage its universal adoption.”&nbsp;

<h2>United Nations</h2>

The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the UN chief also opposed the move and that he “does not want there to be continued use of cluster munitions on the battlefield.”

<h2>Rights groups, organisations fume&nbsp;</h2>

In a series of statements, several international human rights organisations have criticised Washington’s decision and raised alarm about how it would affect civilians’ lives.&nbsp;

Human Rights Watch said that “transferring these weapons would inevitably cause long-term suffering for civilians and undermine the international opprobrium of their use.”&nbsp;

Similarly, Amnesty International said that the Biden administration should understand that “any decision enabling the broader use of cluster bombs in this war will likely lead to one predictable outcome: the further death of civilians.” It added, “Their (cluster munitions) transfer and use by any country under any circumstances is incompatible with international law.”&nbsp;

“This is a death sentence to civilians over the long term. There are people who have not yet been born who will fall victim (to cluster bombs),” said Baptiste Chapuis of Handicap International, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

Vice-chair of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munition Coalition Governance Board, Paul Hannon said, “The Biden administration’s decision to transfer cluster munitions will contribute to the terrible casualties being suffered by Ukrainian civilians both immediately and for years to come.”

He added,&nbsp;“Russia and Ukraine’s use of cluster munitions is adding to Ukraine’s already massive contamination from explosive remnants and landmines.”&nbsp;

Director of the US-based Arms Control Association, Daryl Kimball, said that Washington’s decision would be “escalatory, counterproductive, and only further increase the dangers to civilians caught in combat zones”.&nbsp;He added, “Cluster munitions will not differentiate a Ukrainian soldier from a Russian one.”

Kimball also spoke about how the effectiveness of cluster bombs is “significantly oversold” and while its impact on civilians is “widely acknowledged,” it is “too often overlooked”.

<h2>Ukraine responds to criticism&nbsp;</h2>

Amid criticism, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov took to Twitter and welcomed US’ decision and said it would help in the “de-occupation of our internationally recognised territories” and vowed that the munitions would not be used in “officially recognised territory of Russia.”

“Our position is simple - we need to liberate our temporarily occupied territories and save the lives of our people,” said Reznikov. He also spoke about how the munitions would help save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and that Kyiv will keep a strict record of their use and exchange information with its partners.

<h2>US decision on cluster bombs for Ukraine shows ‘weakness’: Russia</h2>

Russian Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in a statement, said that the US decision to send cluster munitions is an “act of desperation and shows weakness against the backdrop of the failure of the much-touted Ukrainian counteroffensive.”&nbsp;

She added, “The latest ‘miracle weapon’ which Washington and Kyiv are betting on, without thinking about the grave consequences, will have no effect on the special military operation,” referring to what Moscow officially calls its campaign in Ukraine.

The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman also went on to warn that the decision by Washington showed&nbsp;an “aggressive anti-Russian course…aimed at prolonging the conflict in Ukraine as much as possible”.

Zakharova also went on to call Kyiv’s promises to use the controversial munitions responsibly “not worth anything”.&nbsp;Notably, Russia&nbsp;has also been accused of using&nbsp;cluster munitions in Ukraine.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Cluster Munition Monitor&nbsp;reported that the cluster munitions were&nbsp;actively being used&nbsp;by Russia in August last year.&nbsp;

Blow to Meta as top EU court backs German antitrust regulator on privacy breaches

French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his state visit to Germany due to growing unrest in the country, following instances of riots, loot and arson. Macron approached the&nbsp;German presidency and asked for a postponement of the 'planned visit'.&nbsp;

"French President Macron spoke today by telephone with German President (Frank-Walter) Steinmeier and informed him of the situation in his country," a presidency statement said.

"President Macron asked for a postponement of his planned state visit to Germany," it added, without divulging if a new date had been agreed for the postponed visit.&nbsp;

The German president regretted the "cancellation" but said he "has full understanding given the situation in our neighbouring country". He hoped that&nbsp;"the violence on the streets will end as soon as possible and that social peace can be restored".&nbsp;

The state visit was scheduled to begin on Sunday (July 2) at the invitation of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It was supposed to be the first state visit by a French president in 23 years, since Jacques Chirac travelled to Berlin in 2000.

The visit was to take place from July 2 to 4 and according to Steinmeier's office, it was intended&nbsp;"to honour the close friendship of the two countries in the 60th year of the Elysée Treaty" on bilateral relations.&nbsp;

Macron was supposed to visit "several regions of Germany"&nbsp;in order to "underline the unique ties" between the two countries and its citizens, particularly the youth.&nbsp;

Macron postpones state visit to Germany as riots escalate across France

Germany’s coalition government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is split down the middle on whether or not to allow the production of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets for Saudi Arabia. Riyadh had reached a deal with British arms producer BAE Systems five years ago to acquire 48 such fighter jets. However, Berlin’s approval is also required since one-third of the components that go into manufacturing a jet are sourced from Germany.&nbsp;

The fighter jet deal was put on hold following Saudi’s increasing role in the Yemen war, where it first intervened in 2015. Efforts are being made to resuscitate the deal following the signing of a truce between Riyadh and Tehran, which could pave the way for the war in Yemen to come to an end.

Germany imposed a blanket ban on arms sales to Saudi Arabia following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, as a result of a deal signed between the then-Chancellor Angela Merkel and the SPD party. Germany’s approach was considered way tougher than that taken by its allies like Britain, US and France.&nbsp;

A Catholic church in Germany revealed it's been losing followers like never before. More than half a million people decided to renounce their membership in 2022.

A Catholic church in Germany revealed it's been losing followers like never before. More than half a million people decided to renounce their membership in 2022. According to the German Bishops' Conference in Bonn, 522,821 people left the church last year. The number was way more than the forecasts made by the institution. In 2021, the number of people who left was under 360,000. Thoman Schuller, a canon lawyer, told the German media the church was "dying a painful death" and would grapple to recover from the fallout. Why are people in Germany renouncing church membership? According to the 2022 figures, the church has 21 million members, 24.8 per cent of the entire population. The departures happened after a series of child abuse scandals and accusations of a widespread cover-up. The evidence collected by the authorities shows that the departures revved after an expert report on abuse got published in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. There was also discussion about Pope Benedict XVI's alleged involvement in the scandal. In 2022, there were legal battles over compensation for abuse victims in Cologne and Traunstein in Upper Bavaria. Cologne's cardinal, Rainer Maria Woelki, reportedly gave the wrong information about the abuse cases. However, Woelki has denied the accusation. He was the prime focus of the police raids on properties linked to the church, including his residence. Besides the Catholic church, the Protestant church has also been losing members following the abuse scandals. According to the 2022 figures, the number of members in the Protestant church was 19.5 million, and the number of people who left was 380,000. Kirchensteuer (Church Tax) The departure of members means a sizeable loss of income for the church. Every German affiliated with the Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish denominations is liable to pay the Kirchensteuer (church tax) or Kultursteuer (cultural tax), amounting to eight to nine per cent of a person's income tax. The tax office draws the tax from their monthly income. Germany first introduced the church tax in 1919. However, the law was reaffirmed in 1949. After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, Austria also introduced a compulsory tax for Catholics in 1939. People who wish to leave can officially renounce their membership through Kirchenaustritt. In Kirchenaustritt or church withdrawal, the person has to visit a local register office and pay the administrative fee. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

German Catholic church loses half a million members in one year. Here's why

MY LETTER:

When they took our child away, our life just…changed. Can you imagine that a child who was still at her mother’s breast was snatched away from her? Can you imagine the amount of mental agony that a mother or any mother in a situation like this, must have gone through? There was no permission to give her my milk. I used to wake up at night thinking of Ariha being hungry.&nbsp;

They said when they took her away…that Ariha was very stubborn. She used to keep crying for hours until she learnt how to keep quiet herself. Can any parent imagine such a situation? It’s a nightmare.
We Indians are such an emotional race that if we see a crying child on the road, we will ask why is that child crying and tell the caretaker to give him/her what they want so that the child stops crying. We care for each person, especially children.

Ariha was 7 months old at that time when the German authorities snatched her away she was still being breastfed and it was her primary food, so you can imagine how agonising this whole thing was for me, my husband, and our family. My child must be wondering silently: why did you abandon me, mumma? What answer will I give her?

The child welfare authorities in Germany who took her away, the court -- for all of them, it’s a job they are doing. How can they look after my child who needs emotional sustenance? There can be no comparison with a family.&nbsp;

In these dark moments, the only thing that gives us hope is Ariha’s silent wish to be together with us again. Because during our visitations she kept saying: Mumma come with me or I want to go with Mumma Papa.
We are very much worried about what her future will be like, in a foreign country?

As I was dealing with all of this and our family was heartbroken, so many things happened to break our resolve.&nbsp;The authorities in Germany kept saying the mother’s mental state is not good as she keeps crying so I stopped crying. Now they say that the mother doesn’t cry so she is emotionless. There is a twist to everything. And nothing we do seems right to them.

They say they have the best interests of our child at heart but in this inhuman system, how can they say they care? In front of our child, whenever we would meet her, we would laugh with her and be cheerful so that she doesn’t pick up on the vibes about how we are actually feeling. But then when she would go away after our visiting hours were over, our hearts would break and we couldn’t stop our tears.&nbsp;

They want to keep her in the care of a German family and they feel that we have neglected her. I ask you, how can anybody who has seen us with Ariha say that. Everybody has seen her videos too and if a child is not bonded with her parents, how can that child laugh and play and be happy?&nbsp;

When our visa expired this month, in June, we had requested to please let her come to India and be in the supervision of child welfare services, if they didn’t trust us. Instead, they said to inform them when we are leaving so that our child can say goodbye to us! This was even before the court order so it was like they knew what the order was going to be like, even before we were intimated.

We love you Ariha and we will never tire of saying this.&nbsp;

We are worried about her, We have not hurt her and we will fight for her.

I know Ariha’s case has been widely covered in the media and most people are familiar with the details but I would still like to put it all forward here again on this platform.

Ariha had suffered an external perineal injury in September 2021 after which we had gone to the doctor. Two sets of doctors: her regular paediatrician and in the hospital, almost 4 to 5 doctors including the surgeon checked Ariha and said there was nothing to worry about as it seemed like hormonal bleeding. Then we came back home. After 5 days when we went for a follow-up checkup, the doctor said Ariha has an injury and called Child Services and reported the matter.&nbsp;

They took Ariha from the hospital when we were talking to doctors and later we came to know that they were suspecting us of sexual abuse of our own child! We were shocked because we had brought her to the doctor and hospital ourselves. If there was anything to hide, why would we do that?&nbsp;

Much later, in December 2021 that year, the same hospital ruled out sexual abuse, after many examinations and we were relieved. We also voluntarily gave our DNA for tests. In February 2022, the police closed the case of sexual abuse of the child without any charges. But the German Child Services – Jugendamt continued their case for terminating our parental rights.

As the days flew and the case progressed, the family court said that there will be a psychological assessment for us (Parental Ability Report). It took almost a year for a court-appointed expert who hardly talked to us for only a maximum of 12 hours, to write her report that came in December 2022. It was mostly written about the differences between Indian culture and Western culture, but an important thing was that it agreed that parents are very important in a child’s life. And the court-appointed expert recommended that the baby should stay with her parents in a parent-child facility. That gave us hope.

The court hearing took place over 2 days but the judge hardly gave us any time. For almost the entire 2 days, the judge heard only the court-appointed psychologist and gave us only an hour at the end. We had submitted expert medical reports on the injury as well as on language and other issues. But the judge refused to let the experts testify. He also refused to let us take him through the reports.

They claimed that the parents had no explanations. But we were not allowed to see any of our baby’s medical documents and it was only after 13 months that we actually got to see them. If the German doctors were right in their assessment, why did they not let us see her medical records?

It was clear that Ariha had an external injury and external injuries can be accidental. Our medical expert quoted at least 30 cases from medical journals in which this kind of external perineal injury has happened, accidentally to baby boys and baby girls. The court totally ignored this fact and did not even acknowledge it in the court verdict.&nbsp;

Then again, we are native Gujarati speakers and they gave us an Urdu-Punjabi-speaking translator. Therefore, the fact that we were having language difficulties as we did not understand German and our Hindi and English is also not that great, was said to be an excuse.

Coming back to that fateful night, I still shudder when I think of it that it was an accident that brought all this about.&nbsp;Our baby had a persistent case of diaper rash so we would let her play without the diaper for a few hours every evening. One evening she cried out suddenly while playing, I put her to sleep thinking she was tired. The next day I saw the blood in the diaper.

Maybe she fell or sat down on some toys with a sharp edge that could have hurt her; anything could have happened. That’s why we took her for a checkup.

One revelation even we didn’t know about was when many weeks later, her dadi (paternal grandmother) confessed that on that same evening, she had hurt the baby by mistake. This happened right after I had put Ariha to sleep. What happened was that once the baby fell asleep, my husband and I left her dadi in charge and went for a short walk. When we came back the baby was up and crying with her. I had to put her to sleep again.
&nbsp;
What she did not tell us at that time was that when the baby woke up crying, she opened the diaper to check if it needed a change. While doing so she remembered that the astrologer she had consulted when Ariha was born had said the baby might have some bleeding issue in infancy. So she subjected the baby to an unduly invasive examination and accidentally hurt her in doing so. She did not say anything at the time as she was embarrassed.

I and my husband were both shocked when we learnt of this and we told the doctors about it, but it was too late and they refused to believe us.&nbsp;

Later, once we got the medical records, our own experts explained that the injury was consistent with the baby having hurt herself on something when playing diaperless and the grandmother's action would have aggravated it. They said that the German doctors’ repeated invasive examinations of the baby could also have extended the injury.

I want to ask them many questions. The most important one was that the first time on 17th September 2021, when we got Ariha to the doctor, they said its hormonal bleeding and when we took her to the hospital after 5 days on 21st September 2021 for a follow-up checkup, they said Ariha had an injury. Now the judge has also confirmed that Ariha was injured on 16th September 2021, then why did the German doctors misdiagnose it as hormonal bleeding on 17th? and instead of accepting their mistake on the 21st, they blamed us the parents for the injury.&nbsp;

Even on the 21st of September also, I had to wait so long at the doctors as she was treated many hours later after we came in. If it was a serious injury, wouldn’t they have immediately rushed her for treatment?

And then one more surprising thing too. When Ariha was 3 months old, I had given her an oil massage as is our Indian custom, before her bath. At that time, she had slipped from my grip as I was trying to put her in the bathtub which was on the tabletop. Luckily I managed to save her from falling down but bumped her head on a tabletop. The German doctor we consulted, said there was no need for treatment for this. That whole thing, many months later was blown out of proportion in court.

The German court declared that this was also another incident of grievous injury and despite a social worker who had cleared us after spending time in our house, this issue came back to haunt us all over again. A minor head bump was played up as a multiple blunt force trauma. I ask all of you who are new parents is it not possible that we may have a few mishaps as we raise a child considering that we are also new to the process and still learning how the whole parenting thing works? There could be some issues and some accidents but that does not qualify us to be bad parents.

There are more issues of this unfair treatment being meted out to us. Ariha has sensitive skin because of that she had a skin allergy so there were marks on her back since the pediatric doctor in Germany couldn’t give us satisfactory answers, we sent her photos to an Indian doctor for treatment. That was also turned against us. The court said that was also proof of us ill-treating our child.&nbsp;

Ariha has got the same skin allergies now as she is in foster care and her German foster carer takes her to the doctor for it. But if a German foster carer takes Ariha for the same marks to doctors, no one suspects her but if the parents do the same, then these marks are injuries?

If the German court has to listen to just one side and give a verdict then why have a trial at all? They are not listening to the Indian government’s pleas too and ignoring all of ours. Why can't they let her be in her own country in foster care if that is what is safe for her instead of putting her in paid German foster care? This has no logic, no validation.

She is a Jain child and being fed eggs. If a Jewish child was in German custody, would they dream of giving her non-kosher food? Never. It is our child’s right to be in tune with her culture and country, linguistically and religiously and all trials can happen here and yet Germany is not letting that happen. No reason justifies this atrocity on a small child who cannot speak up for herself.

We are fighting many&nbsp;battles.

One is for our child to be with us. She has been in foster care for so long in a remote German village with no access to Indians. She will speak a different language as she will pick up speech now, cultivate different food habits and slowly forget her roots, her culture and her parents as she is in a formative stage now; her most crucial stage. How will all that be set right, ever?

We are losing her, despite our dogged fight and our determination against all odds. In such a situation, all we can do is ask for the personal involvement of our Prime Minister Modi ji in this. If he can intervene, only then will this be solved.&nbsp;

It is my earnest appeal to the government of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modiji and Indians the world over for their support in Ariha’s case so that our baby is safe, happy and comes back home.

CASE UPDATE: There was a police investigation that was closed in February 2022, without any formal charges being filed. Yet the baby is still in the custody of the Child Welfare Services, Jugendamt in Germany, who filed a civil custody case for the termination of parental rights and permanent custody of the child. Since then, both Dhara and Bhavesh, the parents have been fighting a legal battle for the custody of their child, who now is over two years old.

This was even before the court order so it was like they knew what the order was going to be like, even before we were intimated. We love you Ariha and we will never tire of saying this. We are worried about her, We have not hurt her and we will fight for her. I know Ariha’s case has been widely covered in the media and most people are familiar with the details but I would still like to put it all forward here again on this platform. Ariha had suffered an external perineal injury in September 2021 after which we had gone to the doctor. Two sets of doctors: her regular paediatrician and in the hospital, almost 4 to 5 doctors including the surgeon checked Ariha and said there was nothing to worry about as it seemed like hormonal bleeding. Then we came back home. After 5 days when we went for a follow-up checkup, the doctor said Ariha has an injury and called Child Services and reported the matter. They took Ariha from the hospital when we were talking to doctors and later we came to know that they were suspecting us of sexual abuse of our own child! We were shocked because we had brought her to the doctor and hospital ourselves. If there was anything to hide, why would we do that? It was clear that Ariha had an external injury and external injuries can be accidental. Our medical expert quoted at least 30 cases from medical journals in which this kind of external perineal injury has happened, accidentally to baby boys and baby girls. The court totally ignored this fact and did not even acknowledge it in the court verdict. Then again, we are native Gujarati speakers and they gave us an Urdu-Punjabi-speaking translator. Therefore, the fact that we were having language difficulties as we did not understand German and our Hindi and English is also not that great, was said to be an excuse. Coming back to that fateful night, I still shudder when I think of it that it was an accident that brought all this about. Our baby had a persistent case of diaper rash so we would let her play without the diaper for a few hours every evening. I and my husband were both shocked when we learnt of this and we told the doctors about it, but it was too late and they refused to believe us. Later, once we got the medical records, our own experts explained that the injury was consistent with the baby having hurt herself on something when playing diaperless and the grandmother's action would have aggravated it. They said that the German doctors’ repeated invasive examinations of the baby could also have extended the injury. I want to ask them many questions. The most important one was that the first time on 17th September 2021, when we got Ariha to the doctor, they said its hormonal bleeding and when we took her to the hospital after 5 days on 21st September 2021 for a follow-up checkup, they said Ariha had an injury. Now the judge has also confirmed that Ariha was injured on 16th September 2021, then why did the German doctors misdiagnose it as hormonal bleeding on 17th? and instead of accepting their mistake on the 21st, they blamed us the parents for the injury. There are more issues of this unfair treatment being meted out to us. Ariha has sensitive skin because of that she had a skin allergy so there were marks on her back since the pediatric doctor in Germany couldn’t give us satisfactory answers, we sent her photos to an Indian doctor for treatment. That was also turned against us. The court said that was also proof of us ill-treating our child. We are fighting many battles. We are losing her, despite our dogged fight and our determination against all odds. In such a situation, all we can do is ask for the personal involvement of our Prime Minister Modi ji in this. If he can intervene, only then will this be solved. Gravitas Global Headlines: Germany to station troops in Lithuania

Germany will be permanently stationing 4,000 of its troops in NATO ally Lithuania to help secure the country’s eastern flank, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said, while referring to the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Germany is ready to permanently station a robust brigade in Lithuania," Pistorius said during a visit to the Lithuanian capita, Vilnius, on Monday.

He said that facilities would first&nbsp;need to be built to accommodate the troops, state-run Deutsche Welle (DW) reported.

Berlin already leads NATO's battlegroup in&nbsp;Lithuania, a reinforced battalion of some 1,000 troops.

"We agree that the brigade will grow step-by-step as the infrastructure is established," Pistorius said, adding that such a deployment could not be completed within "a few months".

<h2>Long-pending demand</h2>

For long, Lithuania had sought the permanent presence of German troops in the country, which borders the Russian region of Kaliningrad.

But Germany resisted permanently stationing its brigade in Lithuania, arguing that the troops could be rapidly deployed from bases in Germany.&nbsp;

"We agree that the brigade will grow step-by-step as the infrastructure is established," Pistorius said, adding that such a deployment could not be completed within "a few months".

Pistorius stressed that the deployment should be compatible with NATO's (&nbsp;North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) regional plans detailing how it would respond to a Russian attack.

<h2>Better Infrastructure</h2>

In response, Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda said he was the required infrastructure is expected to be in place by 2026.

"We are simplifying the procedures...in order to be able to finalize the building of infrastructure by 2026," he said. "But I will not be angry if the minister of defence will finalise in 2025."

In June 2022, Berlin pledged to have a full brigade ready to defend Vilnius in case of an attack.&nbsp;

Currently, only the brigade's command post with about 20 German soldiers are in Rukla, Lithuania. The rest remain at various locations within Germany.

<h2>NATO chief welcomes move</h2>

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg though welcomed Germany's announcement, he rejected calls for an immediate bolstering of troops along the alliance's eastern flank in response to the mutiny in Russia.

"It's not all about presence, it's all about the ability to have early warnings and indications, and then react quickly if there is a need - and this exercise demonstrates exactly that," he said.

With eyes on Russia, Germany to permanently station 4,000 troops in Lithuania

Deutsche Bank&nbsp;has told clients it can no longer guarantee full access to Russian stocks that belong to them, underlining the challenges global investors face to recover stranded investments in the country's companies.

Germany's largest bank said in a note dated June 9 and viewed by Reuters that it had uncovered a shortfall in the shares that back the depositary receipts (DRs) the bank had issued before the Ukraine invasion. The shares have been held in Russia by a different depositary bank.

In the circular, Deutsche attributed the shortfall to a decision by Moscow to allow investors to convert some of the DRs into local stock. The conversion was carried out without the German bank's "involvement or oversight" and Deutsche was unable to reconcile the company shares with the depositary receipts.

It is the first major bank to formally inform depositary receipt holders that they may not get take ownership of precisely all the shares they are entitled to, two sources advising investors who continue to hold Russian DRs told Reuters.

DRs are certificates issued by a bank representing shares in a foreign company traded on a local stock exchange. Swapping DRs for shares in the Russian company is a first step towards an effort to recover their money.

Shares affected include those in national airline Aeroflot, construction firm LSR Group, mining and steel firm Mechel&nbsp;and Novolipetsk Steel. Mechel declined to comment, while the remaining companies did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comments.

The German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) on Monday opened the way to further compensation claims against carmakers that installed illegal diesel exhaust treatment software, following a landmark European ruling.

Diesel owners whose cars had the "thermal window" programme would be entitled to damages if their vehicles risked being taken off the road as a result, the court in Karlsruhe ruled.

If successful, claimants would be entitled to between five and 15 per cent of the price of the automobile.&nbsp;

German courts okay claims against carmakers over illegal diesel exhaust software

In Germany, on Sunday, a far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate won a vote to become a district leader, marking a significant breakthrough for the party. The AfD, which is considered radical by mainstream parties and faces refusal of cooperation, secured victory in the Sonnenberg district in Thuringia with 52.8 per cent of the vote.&nbsp;

<h2>What does AfD's success mean for Germany?</h2>

This success, as per Guardian, follows the party's record-high national poll ratings and reflects popular discontent with the governing coalition led by Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which has faced challenges over policy and the budget.

<h2>What's the secret of AfD's success?</h2>

The AfD, which was polling at around 19 per cent-20 per cent, has tapped into voter concerns regarding economic recession, migration, and the transition to green policies.&nbsp;

German Parliament on Friday (June 23) passed a reform to immigration law&nbsp;aimed at encouraging non-EU jobseekers to seek jobs in Germany.

"This draft law secures prosperity in Germany," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) as quoted by German news outlet DW. She presented the reforms in the parliament. She said that the reform would only work if bureaucratic hurdles were dismantled while implementing it.

"It's unacceptable that you have to fill in 17 different applications to bring a new care worker into the country," she said.

The opposition parties had some objections, though they welcomed some of the government's ideas. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) criticised the government's plans to lower qualification hurdles for foreign workers. Andrea Lindholz of the CSU said plans to lower the required German language skills would encourage low-skilled workers.

Lindholz argued that reforms do nothing to tackle what she described as the main problem: Bureaucratic bottlenecks.

She added that plans to provide opportunities for asylum seekers who were already inside Germany had a risk of "turning the asylum process into a kind of state-financed job-seeking opportunity in Germany".

<h2>Far-right complains</h2>

&nbsp;Alternative for Germany (AfD), the far-right party, opposed the reforms vehemently.

"What you have put together in a 100-page draft law could be summed up in one sentence," said Norbert Kleinwachter "Everyone gets in, but no one gets thrown out."

Kleinwachter was quoted by DW.

Green Party's Lamya Kaddor rejected AfD's assertions. She said that speaking German was not the most important prerequisite to working in Germany.

"You integrate best when you have to speak German at work — ever noticed?" she asked sarcastically.

"This is finally, finally, really good news for this country. In the competition with other successful countries of immigration like the US or Canada, we have made some crucial steps forward," she said.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) which is part of the German government's three-party coalition, supported the law.

"It's ridiculous that it's easier in Germany today to emigrate into the asylum system than the job market," said the FDP's Konstantin Kuhle. "We're turning that around with this law."

German Parliament reforms immigration law in relief to non-EU jobseekers

During a session in the German parliament, Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered a strong warning to China, emphasising the need to avoid the use of force in achieving territorial changes, specifically with regard to Taiwan.

Scholz's statement came following face-to-face talks earlier this week between Germany and China, represented by a high-level Chinese delegation led by Premier Li Qiang, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

As geopolitical tensions between the West and China escalate, Scholz made it clear that Germany firmly rejects any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo through coercion or military means. Taiwan, in particular, was highlighted as a concern for Germany.

"We firmly reject all unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East and South&nbsp;China&nbsp;Seas by&nbsp;force&nbsp;or coercion. This is especially true for&nbsp;Taiwan,"&nbsp;Scholz&nbsp;said, according to prepared remarks, as reported by Reuters.

By raising these concerns, Germany demonstrates its commitment to upholding fundamental rights and principles, while acknowledging the need for open dialogue and constructive engagement.

<h2>China's assertive actions and Taiwan's defence stance</h2>

China's military activities in the vicinity of Taiwan have been a cause for concern, as it aims to assert control over the island. However, Taiwan strongly disputes Beijing's sovereignty claims and vows to protect itself in the event of an attack. The ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan highlight the complex geopolitical landscape in the region, where maintaining stability and avoiding conflict remain paramount.

<h2>Scholz&nbsp;calls for Sweden's inclusion in NATO</h2>

Chancellor Scholz also addressed the issue of Sweden's membership in the NATO alliance. He urged Turkey, a NATO member, to support Sweden's inclusion and emphasised the importance of Sweden having a seat at the table during the upcoming NATO summit. By advocating for Swedish representation, Germany highlights the need for broader participation and collaboration within NATO to effectively address global challenges and ensure collective security.

A court in Germany's Koblenz, over 600 km southwest of Berlin, has jailed a woman for more than nine years for keeping a Yazidi woman as slave as well as aiding and abetting war crimes and genocide as a member of the ISIS.

The 37-year-old German defendant, identified as Nadine K, was also found guilty of crimes against humanity.

<h2>Who is Nadine K?</h2>

Nadine K was reportedly a member of the ISIS between December 2014 and March 2019. Nadine travelled to Syria to join the ISIS with her husband.

In 2015, the couple moved to Mosul in Iraq, then back to Syria.

From April 2016, the pair kept as a slave a Yazidi woman who had been imprisoned by ISIS since 2014, according to an Al Jazeera report.

<h2>How Nadine K kept Yazidi woman as a slave?</h2>

Nadine K, who kept the unnamed Yazidi woman as slave when she was 22 at the time, forced her to do housework. She was also forced to observe strict Islamic rituals.

Nadine K’s husband also regularly raped and beat the Yazidi woman.

"All of this served the declared purpose of IS (Islamic State/ISIL), to wipe out the Yazidi faith," prosecutors said at the trial’s opening earlier this year, Al Jazeera reported.

Nadine K and her family reportedly took the woman with them when they moved back to ISIS-controlled territory in Syria in 2016 where they remained until March 2019.

In March 2019, the concerned Yazidi woman was finally freed, after Kurdish fighters arrested the family.

The convict returned to Germany last year in one of several repatriation operations and was arrested on arrival.

Earlier in October 2021, ISIS member Jennifer Wenisch was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Munich court over the death of a five-year-old Yazidi girl she and her husband had enslaved. The five-year-old was chained beneath the hot sun and left to die of thirst.

Earlier this year in January, Germany’s lower house of parliament recognised the 2014 massacre of Kurdish-speaking Yazidis by ISIS as genocide, condemning "indescribable atrocities" and "tyrannical injustice" carried out by ISIS fighters "with the intention of completely wiping out the Yazidi community".

Germany's leading newspaper, Bild, is set to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in place of various editorial positions as part of a cost-cutting initiative totalling around US$113 million.&nbsp;This move is expected to result in numerous job redundancies, affecting tasks that can now be performed by AI and automated processes in the digital realm.

Axel Springer SE, Europe's largest media publisher and owner of Bild, informed its staff via email that positions such as editors, print production staff, subeditors, proofreaders, and photo editors will undergo significant changes or cease to exist altogether, according to a report from the rival newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ), reported the Guardian.

It said the roles of “editors, print production staff, subeditors, proofreaders and photo editors will no longer exist as they do today”, according to the email.

In February, CEO Mathias Döpfner announced the company's transition into a "purely digital media company." In line with this, the recent message emphasises the potential role of AI tools, including ChatGPT, in revolutionising independent journalism. Döpfner stated that these tools have the capability to greatly improve the quality of journalism or even replace it entirely.

<h2>AI's impact on journalism: A shift towards content creation and aggregation</h2>

CEO Mathias Döpfner predicted that AI would excel in tasks such as aggregating information, emphasising the need for publishers to focus on delivering exceptional original content, including investigative journalism and unique commentary, to stay relevant in the evolving media landscape.

This perspective echoes the belief that only publishers capable of producing the highest quality original content will thrive amidst the growing influence of AI technologies. Axel Springer SE joins other news publishers, such as BuzzFeed, the Daily Mirror, and the Daily Express, in exploring the potential of AI in their operations.

While AI tools like ChatGPT can generate sophisticated texts across various genres, from essays to poems, it is important to note that these responses can sometimes be inaccurate or even fabricated. The use of AI in journalism raises important questions about the future of content creation, the role of journalists, and the accuracy and integrity of AI-generated content.

Men's Journal and tech website Cnet have embraced the use of AI to produce articles, which are subsequently reviewed for accuracy by human editors.

However, Cnet admitted limitations in January when it was discovered that over half of the articles required corrections. In another instance, the publishers of the German magazine Die Aktuelle faced repercussions after publishing an entirely AI-generated "interview" with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

The seven-time F1 world champion, who has been out of the public eye since a skiing accident in 2013, suffered a severe brain injury. His family has taken legal action against the magazine's publishers, leading to the editor's dismissal and an apology to the Schumacher family.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the benefits of free trade between their nations. Scholz said climate goals could be reached more easily with fair competition and open market access in China. Meanwhile, li warned that 'de-coupling' from China's economy would harm long-term growth globally. As the trade talks unfold, the european union launches its economic security plan, seeking to strengthen controls on exports and emerging technologies that could potentially be used by rivals like China.

Germany and China forge ahead with trade talks

Amid mounting geopolitical tensions and growing security concerns, Germany and China engaged in crucial trade talks, seeking to balance economic interests and national security, Reuters reported. The discussions, led by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Berlin, highlighted the potential benefits of free trade but drew criticism from skeptics who question the appropriateness of such talks at this juncture. As both countries face complex challenges, the delicate relationship between Germany, China, and the wider European Union (EU) is under scrutiny.

Security Concerns and Technological Risks

Germany's domestic intelligence agency issued a warning, underscoring China's ongoing campaign to acquire German technology for military purposes. The agency's annual report cited by Reuters highlighted the increasing risk of sophisticated cyber-spying operations, further raising concerns about national security and the potential compromise of sensitive technologies.

EU's Economic Security Plan

Simultaneously, the European Union's executive body unveiled an ambitious economic security plan. The plan aims to convince the 27 member states to adopt stricter controls on exports and emerging technologies that rival nations, including China, could utilize. While not explicitly naming China, the proposal emphasizes the need to reduce economic reliance and "de-risk" certain partnerships, signaling a shift in the EU's approach toward safeguarding strategic technologies.

Navigating the Balancing Act

As China's largest trading partner in Europe, Germany faces a delicate balancing act in formulating its China strategy. Despite China's significance as a vital market for German companies and a key source of materials for exports, concerns over national security and technology transfers have prompted a reevaluation of the relationship. The trade talks between Chancellor Scholz and Premier Li underscored the potential advantages of fair competition and open market access for achieving climate goals. Yet, critics argue that geopolitical tensions warrant a more cautious approach.

EU Member States Dilemma

The European Commission's economic security plan addresses the EU member states' concerns over certain nations' potential misuse of emerging technologies. However, implementing stricter export controls and screening outbound investments poses challenges, as nations are reluctant to relinquish their powers to grant export licenses, citing the need to balance economic interests with security considerations.

Future Debates and Funding

The EU's economic security plan sets the stage for an upcoming summit in Brussels, where EU leaders will engage in a critical debate on relations with China. The discussions will shape the EU's stance and policies towards China moving forward, considering the intricate dynamics of economic cooperation and security risks. Additionally, the European Commission has called for an extra €10 billion in funding to support industry development in strategic technologies.

Future Debates and Funding The EU's economic security plan sets the stage for an upcoming summit in Brussels, where EU leaders will engage in a critical debate on relations with China. The discussions will shape the EU's stance and policies towards China moving forward, considering the intricate dynamics of economic cooperation and security risks. Additionally, the European Commission has called for an extra €10 billion in funding to support industry development in strategic technologies. (With Inputs from Reuters)
