Thousands of flights to and from German airports were canceled as workers walked out to press their demands for inflation-busting pay increases. The strikes at seven German airports, including Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, affected almost 300,000 passengers and forced airlines to cancel more than 2,300 flights.

Political leaders from some 40 nations will opened the Munich Security Conference on 17th Feb, where US Vice President Kamala Harris, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are expected to speak.

More than 2,000 flights were cancelled in Germany on Friday (February 17) as workers at eight airports in the country went on a strike to demand better pay. Around 295,000 passengers were affected by the cancellation of 2,340 flights at Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Stuttgart and Leipzig airports, the German airport association ADV said and called the strikes completely unacceptable. According to a statement, ADV chief Ralph Beisel said that solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not at the expense of passengers, news agency AFP reported.

The strike was announced by the Verdi trade union on Wednesday (February 15). Verdi said the walkout was expected to have a strong impact, especially on domestic air traffic, ranging from delays to cancellations and even a partial shutdown. However, it pointed out the nationwide strike would not impact flights delivering aid to earthquake-ravaged Turkey and Syria, or aircraft carrying leaders to the annual Munich Security Conference.

Verdi has been leading negotiations for public sector workers, airport ground crew and aviation security staff, demanding better pay at a time when workers are seeing their incomes eroded by a higher cost of living. The next round of talks has been scheduled for February 22-23.

Defending the strike, Verdi said a combined day of action was less inconvenient for passengers than several strikes on different days. Speaking to Inforadio on Friday, its Deputy Chair Christine Behle said, "If nothing is done about pay now, we will all be in for another chaotic summer."

Earlier, on Wednesday, Lufthansa was forced to cancel or delay flights due to a major IT outage caused by construction work in Frankfurt. And on Thursday, the websites of seven airports in Germany were hit by a suspected cyber attack.

Borussia Dortmund's young superstar Karim Adeyemi has revealed how he was able to torpedo through the Chelsea defence during the first leg of the round of 16 tie against the London-based team. Adeyemi scored a superb solo goal during which he beat Chelsea's new $100 million signing Enzo Fernandez in the footrace. The 21-year-old attributed African food as the reason for his blistering pace which was at full display on Wednesday night in front of a packed Signal Iduna crowd. "I eat a lot of African food! I have good genetics from my dad so I think it will be difficult," Adeyemi told CBSSportGolazo in a post-match interview. When further quizzed as to what kind of African food he ate, Adeyemi revealed, “It is called fufu, and it’s a Nigerian food which is very good.” Read more: World Cup model who went viral for her boldness reveals her Premier Club allegiances With the game deadlocked at 0-0 till after the hour mark, it was Adeyemi that seized upon a counterattack opportunity and beat Fernandez who just could not gather the pace to catch him. Asked if he was the fastest player in Germany, Adeyemi laughed and said, “I don’t know. But it’s one thing I can do good but the other players can also do other stuff better.” Read more: 'It's a shame...': Mikel Arteta blasts Arsenal for shipping three goals against Manchester City Dortmund manager Edin Terzić was full praise of Adeyemi and even started his post-match conference with 'Meep Meep', referring to the Roadrunner cartoon. “This is the quality of Karim. It was a corner kick and we defended it quite well – it was a dangerous situation – but then when you see his acceleration, this is something we showed him at halftime," Terzić told BT Sports. "His first touch was there to accelerate the game and then, if you’re quick like this, it’s going to be very tough for any defense to defend him. And it was a great goal. It was very important as it was the winning goal.” Despite winning the first leg, the men in yellow and black will be wary of the danger of such a slender lead. The team will travel to Stamford Bridge next month for the second leg. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Germany decides to not excavate remains of soldiers who died during WWI: Report

One of the coalition parties of the ruling government has proposed that English be adopted as the second official language of Germany in a bid to attract more skilled labourers from other English speaking nations in the European country. The Free Democratic Party (FDP), which is in alliance with the three-party government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, had unveiled its own version of a “green card” — called Chancenkarte or “opportunity card” — to address a critical shortage of skilled labour.

“Skilled workers who want to come to Germany should be able to successfully apply for our new points-based ‘green card’ scheme from abroad even if they don’t yet speak fluent German,” Johannes Vogel of the FDP told the Guardian.

He said that the new system has been designed in such a way that makes it possible for applicants to qualify even if they were not fluent in German.

“And the offices where they have to register once these workers are here should be able to offer them English application forms and caseworkers who are fluent in English,” he added.

The latest push comes against the backdrop of rising demand for skilled workers as the country tries to drive up the economy following the pandemic.

According to the Federal Employment Agency, a record 764,326 vacancies at German businesses was reported in January this year. Last year, the annual average was 844,000, with desperate shortages in sectors like pharmaceutical, engineering and IT.

The head of the agency, Andrea Nahles, had suggested last November that Europe’s largest economy would need an annual intake of about 400,000 skilled workers from abroad to fill the gap.

The call to make English a second language found resonance within the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, whose president Peter Adrian, recently told Münchner Merkur newspaper: “English is the world language and should suffice for anyone to achieve great things in many German businesses.”

The idea was first floated by the FDP when it entered the government in December 2021. However, it was rejected by the organisation responsible for those working in administrative offices.

“When it comes to ordinances and laws, the official language in this country applies for reasons of legal certainty, and that is German,” a spokesperson for the Civil Servants’ Association (DBB) told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland last year.

Germany's prosecutor general said on Sunday (February 5) that his office was in possession of 'hundreds' of pieces of evidence that point to war crimes by Russian forces in Ukraine. He called for international effort to bring leaders to justice. "At the moment, we are focusing on mass killings in Bucha and attacks on Ukraine's civil infrastructure," prosecutor Peter Frank told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

Frank said that most of the evidence was gathered from interviews with Ukrainian refugees. He added that the goal was now to "prepare for a possible later court case — whether in Germany or with our foreign partners or an international court".

Frank's office has previously used the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows the prosecution of certain grave crimes regardless of where they took place, to try Syrians over atrocities committed during the country's civil war.

Under the same principle, a group of people from Myanmar last month filed a criminal complaint in Germany, accusing their country's military of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Frank said his office had begun its Ukraine inquiry in March 2022.

"We are not targeting certain specific people in the investigation but rather are collecting information and evidence," he said.

He acknowledged, however, that prosecution of suspected war criminals in Germany was possible only if they were in the country.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock last month called for a tribunal to get around the fact that the International Criminal Court (ICC), despite launching it own investigation last year, cannot prosecute Russia for any possible war crimes since neither Russia nor Ukraine are members of the Hague-based court.

The ceremonial 'steel cutting' was performed for two 7000-ton vessels being built by India's government-run Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), for a German firm. Steel cutting is the first tangible step of the shipbuilding process, where the shipbuilder and customer press the start button of a laser cutter that cuts that steel sheet that ends up on the vessel's hull.
