Scientists with NASA announced they have discovered an Earth-sized planet that is likely rocky and could be habitable. The planet, named TOI 700 e, is slightly smaller than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star called TOI 700 about 102 light-years away.

<p>The team of researchers used the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The team revealed that it is "compact, and containing large quantities of interstellar dust, it is a young galaxy, forming stars at about 1000 times the rate of the Milky Way."</p>

<p>"Very distant galaxies are real mines of information about the past and future evolution of our universe," said First Author Marika Giulietti. She was quoted by EurekaAlert.</p>

<p>"However, studying them is very challenging. They are very compact and therefore difficult to observe. Also, because of the distance, we receive very weak light from them. The cause of this obscuration is the massive presence of interstellar dust, which intercepts visible light from young stars, makes it difficult to detect with optical instruments, and re-emits it at greater wavelengths where it can be observed only with powerful interferometers in the (sub-)millimeter and radio wavebands."</p>

<p>"In this way, large celestial bodies act as a kind of enormous cosmic lens that makes the 'background' galaxies appear larger and brighter, allowing them to be identified and studied." Over the past decade, many observation programmes have been carried out with this approach. "About a hundred have been discovered so far, but there could be many more."<br />

<p>A massive blast of light considered extremely rare and is believed to have been triggered by the collision of stars with a black hole that hit the Earth recently and which could help change our understanding of the universe, scientists revealed.</p>

<p>The event called a gamma-ray burst (GRB), which lasted for only 50 seconds, came from a nearby galaxy in December 2021. These blasts are considered to be the most powerful explosions in the universe.</p>

<p>Earlier, it was believed that GRBs only resulted from the destruction of massive stars, but astronomers now believe that it can come from the combination of two neutron stars.</p>

<p>After the massive GRBs hit the Earth last year, scientists started searching for the afterglow that such blasts leave behind, as it helps to find where the blast has come from.</p>

<p>However, the researchers found something else entirely. They traced the blast from a kilonava— a rare event that happens after the merger of a neutron star with either another star or a black hole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to astronomers, these events happen very rarely.</p>

<p>“This event represents an exciting paradigm shift for gamma-ray-burst astronomy,” said Jillian Rastinejad, a doctoral candidate in the Northwestern University Department of Physics and Astronomy who led the research, in a statement.</p>

<p>According to them, the blast, which has been named GRB 211211A, was relatively long with more infrared light than expected.</p>

<p>Astronomers believe that the explosion produced elements such as gold and platinum.</p>

<p>The researchers’ findings also found that this event produced heavy elements that amounted to roughly 1000 times the mass of our Earth.</p>

<p>“When we followed this long gamma-ray burst, we expected it would lead to evidence of a massive star collapse,” said Northwestern’s Wen-fai Fong, a senior author on the study.</p>

<p>“Instead, what we found was very different. When I entered the field 15 years ago, it was set in stone that long gamma-ray bursts come from massive star collapses.</p>

<p>By studying the gravitational data collected by NASA’s Juna space probe, and the makeup of the rocky material at the gas giant’s core, the scientists suggested that Jupiter ate baby planets—often called planetesimals—to fuel its growth.</p>

<p>This theory was propounded by an international team of astronomers led by Yamila Miguel from the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research. They published their article in the journal Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics last week.</p>

<p>"Jupiter was one of the first planets to form in our&nbsp;solar system. However, we know almost nothing for certain about how it formed," Yamila Miguel, an astrophysicist at Leiden University in The Netherlands, told Live Science.</p>

<p>"Juno provided very accurate gravity data that helped us to constrain the distribution of the material in Jupiter's interior... It is very unique data that we can only get with a spacecraft orbiting around the planet," she added.</p>

<p>Jupiter may predominantly be a ball of swirling gas today, but it started its life by accreting rocky material — just like every other planet in the solar system.</p>

Scientists claim Jupiter became big after eating small planets

<p>The night sky is a sparkle to start with. The countless stars are just there for us to unravel their mystery. But just sometimes, when we are in the mood for some dreamy stargazing, weather plays a spoilsport.</p>

<p>It was to overcome this limitation exactly that Hubble Space Telescope was put in orbit. It eliminates the weather factor completely.</p>

<p>Hubble has been sending us mesmerising images for years. Another image has joined the long list. The space telescope has clicked a crisp photo of a sparkling galaxy. NASA has shared the image on Instagram and other social media feeds.</p>

NASA's Hubble Telescope clicks crisp image of a sparkling galaxy

<p>The Hubble Space Telescope has been crucial in charting out the universe and since its launch in 1990, the telescope has sent a huge number of pictures for NASA to study. Over the years, the pictures have helped NASA and a number of researchers to understand the universe much better and with time, the technology has also advanced by leaps and bounds. An international team of scientists have now released what is being considered as the largest near-infrared image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It covers a huge amount of area, and the researchers believe that the image can help in understanding star-forming regions of the universe and extremely distant galaxies.</p>

<p>The researchers at the University of Toronto came up with a new technique known as Drift and Shift (DASH) to catch the image and according to their study, it was able to create an image almost eight times larger than the normal pictures taken by the Hubble telescope.</p>

<p>According to a paper to be published in The Astrophysical Journal, the technique helps the Hubble to take eight pictures per orbit instead of one picture resulting in a massive increase in data and the images are finally put together to create a panoramic view.</p>

<p>"The 3D-DASH programme extends Hubble's legacy in wide-area imaging so we can begin to unravel the mysteries of the galaxies beyond our own," he added.</p>

<p>As much as we love our Milky Way Galaxy, it is on collision course with an even bigger galaxy. Andromeda galaxy is racing towards Milky Way&nbsp;at an unimaginable speed.</p>

<p>We can breathe a little sigh of relief though because the galactic collision will take place billions of years from now. This collision of galaxies may not be as apocalyptic as movies have us believe. But immense gravities of Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will tear material out from the cosmic dance partners. After a merger process that will last billions of years still, both galaxies will lose their spiral shapes and the resulting 'Milkdromeda' galaxy will have an elliptical shape just like NGC 474 which Hubble has clicked! &nbsp;</p>

Hubble clicks photo that shows future of Milky Way Galaxy

<p>The mysteries of the universe continue to fascinate scientists all around the world and one of the major points of contention over the years have been the placement of the galaxies all around the cosmos. While the existing theories suggest that there is no pattern when it comes to the various galaxies, a Vice report said that a new study shows that small galaxies create disk-like structures around their host galaxies which allows them to maintain a certain structure in their entirety.</p>

<p>Two researchers from the University of Nottingham have suggested that the smaller galaxies are creating ‘invisible walls’ out of a new class of particles called symmetrons and that is the maintaining the core structure of all the massive bodies existing in the universe. The study is mainly based on dark matter, but no previous study suggests this kind of behaviour from any dark matter.</p>

<p>The study states that the smaller galaxies are reacting to the gravitational pull of the bigger galaxies and as a result, that allows them to stay in a proper orbit. However, the new observations in the study can finally answer the question of why they sometimes create unusual orbits for themselves.</p>

<p>Photo of such a cosmic dance has been captured. It is a collision between a barred spiral galaxy and a lenticular galaxy. These two galaxies are merging to form a single galaxy. As they swirl around each other, both of them are affecting one another.</p>

<p>NGC 1512, the galaxy in the middle&nbsp;of the picture, is larger of the two galaxies. It is a barred spiral type of galaxy. NGC 1510, is a smaller lenticular (lens-like) galaxy which can be seen in lower right part of the image.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both of these galaxies are located in the direction of the constellation Horologium. The pair is about 60 million light-years away from Earth.</p>

Check out the cosmic dance of these colliding galaxies

<p>Although James Webb Space Telescope is soon to open entirely new vista of space research for us, good ol' Hubble deserves its due. Humanity's very firt eye in the sky has been steadfast in sending pictures of far corners of space for last three decades. And to commemorate its 32nd year of operation, a unique image has been released.</p>

<p>The image shows five galaxies that are eventually going to collide. The galaxies are so closely situated (well in galactic terms) that it in itself is a thing of wonder.</p>

<p>This group of galaxies is called Hickson Compact Group 40. These galaxies are situated unusually close.</p>

<p>These galaxies are on a collision course, about a billion years from now, all five galaxies would collide to form a single elliptical galaxy.</p>

<p>So what are the types of galaxies present in the photo?</p>

<p>We can see three spiral galaxies, marked by orange colour visible due to space dust. The one in the middle is an elliptical galaxy. The one in the bottom right corner is a lenticular (lens-like) galaxy.</p>

<p>This galactic huddle is sitting somewhere in the direction of constellation Hydra.</p>

These galaxies are situated unusually close. These galaxies are on a collision course, about a billion years from now, all five galaxies would collide to form a single elliptical galaxy. So what are the types of galaxies present in the photo? We can see three spiral galaxies, marked by orange colour visible due to space dust. The one in the middle is an elliptical galaxy. These galaxies are at least ten times fainter than the night sky around them. The galaxies are faint in their appearance because of low disc density.</p>

<p>The newly discovered galaxy is around 136 light-years away from Earth.</p>

<p>"The researchers measured the distance of NGC6902A, a previously known galaxy and the faint star-forming regions using emission lines in the spectra. They found that these star-forming regions are at a distance of around 136 million light-years, whereas the distance of NGC 6902A is around 825 million light-years. This means that the diffuse blue emission was from a foreground galaxy," said India's Ministry of Science and Technology.</p>

<p>The research has been published in the journal ‘Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics’.</p>

<p>Scientists from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found evidence of water in a galaxy named SPT0311-58. The galaxy is 12.8 billion light-years away from Earth.</p>

<p>The scientists used Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile to gaze at the galaxy. The galaxy is located in younger part of the universe and it is about 780 million years old. Considering universe is 13.8 billion years old, the galaxy is fairly young.</p>

<p>Lead investigator of the study has been quoted in media reports as saying that evidence of presence of carbon dioxide has also been found in this galaxy. The scientists have also found that stars in this galaxy have completed their life span relatively quickly. Considering oxygen comes from dying stars, this galaxy would have oxygen too. This also logically explains presence of water.</p>

Water has been found and even predicted to be present elsewhere in out solar system but now scientists have found a galaxy that represents farthest distance from Earth where water has been found. Scientists from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found evidence of water in a galaxy named SPT0311-58. The galaxy is 12.8 billion light-years away from Earth. The galaxy is located in younger part of the universe and it is about 780 million years old. Considering universe is 13.8 billion years old, the galaxy is fairly young. Lead investigator of the study has been quoted in media reports as saying that evidence of presence of carbon dioxide has also been found in this galaxy. The scientists have also found that stars in this galaxy have completed their life span relatively quickly. Considering oxygen comes from dying stars, this galaxy would have oxygen too. This also logically explains presence of water. Even if they are travelling at the speed of light (300,000 km per second) it will taken 12.8 billion years to reach us. It can hence be said that we are safe for now.

<p>Franco and his collaborators spotted fluorine (in the form of hydrogen fluoride) in the large clouds of gas of the distant galaxy NGP–190387.</p>

<p>Since stars expel the elements, they form in their cores as they reach the end of their lives, this detection implies that the stars that created fluorine must have lived and died quickly.</p>

<p>The team believes that Wolf–Rayet stars, very massive stars that live only a few million years, are the most likely production sites of fluorine.</p>

<p>They are needed to explain the amounts of hydrogen fluoride the team spotted, the astronomers say.</p>

<p>Wolf–Rayet stars had been suggested as possible sources of cosmic fluorine before, but astronomers did not know until now how important they were in producing this element in the early Universe.</p>

<p>“We have shown that Wolf–Rayet stars, which are among the most massive stars known and can explode violently as they reach the end of their lives, help us, in a way, to maintain good dental health!” Franco said.</p>

<p>Astronomers have&nbsp;published the most detailed images yet seen of galaxies beyond our own, revealing their inner workings in unprecedented detail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After almost a decade of work, the images were created from data collected by the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), a radio telescope.</p>

<p>LOFAR is a network of more than 70,000 small antennae spread across nine European counties, with its core in Exloo, the Netherlands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new images&nbsp;push the boundaries of what we know about galaxies and supermassive black holes.</p>

<p>According to&nbsp;Dr. Neal Jackson of The University of Manchester,&nbsp;“These high-resolution images allow us to zoom in to see what’s really going on when super-massive black holes launch radio jets, which wasn’t possible before at frequencies near the FM radio band.”</p>

<p>Scientists believe that at some point, high-energy ultraviolet radiation from exploded stars split the intergalactic hydrogen atoms into electrons and protons. Once ionised, the hydrogen would be electrically conductive and no longer scatter light.</p>

<p>Those elements are forged by nuclear fusion inside stars, so either the galaxy contains the exploded remains of lots of massive stars or it formed in a region of space that had been previously seeded with the remnants of a prior generation of stars, scientists said.</p>

<p>“Our aim is that this allows the scientific community to use the whole European network of LOFAR telescopes for their own science, without having to spend years to become an expert,” said lead author&nbsp;Dr. Leah Morabito from&nbsp;Durham University.</p>
