The telescope has clicked so many images of the cosmos and has yielded so much information, before sending another treasure-trove of celestial secrets that its almost every day that something or the other stands out from its observations. Now, scientists have found that JWST has serendipitously clicked a galaxy that's 'photobombing' other galaxies in the picture.</p>

<p>What's more, the scientists were not looking for the photobombing galaxy to start with.</p>

<p>The observation was being made under JWST's PEARLS (Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science) observing programme and the telescope was aimed at a galaxy cluster designated as CLG1212. But as the scientists trained JWST's lenses at the galaxy cluster, they found a wispy body in the background.</p>

<p>This was PEARLSDG, the galaxy responsible for photobombing the galaxy cluster in front of it. PEARLSDG is an isolated dwarf galaxy and scientists found that there was no star-forming activity in the galaxy.</p>

<p>The team, led by Tim Carleton, who is an Assistant Research Scientist at Arizona University, has published their study in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.</p>

<p>"Consistent with its low level of UV emission and the lack of emission lines in its spectrum, we find a very low sSFR, suggesting that its star formation shut off over 1 Gyr ago," say the researchers in the paper.</p>

<p>1 Gyr is equal to 1 billion years.</p>

<p>"These types of isolated quiescent dwarf galaxies haven't really been seen before except for relatively few cases. They are not really expected to exist given our current understanding of galaxy evolution, so the fact that we see this object helps us improve our theories for galaxy formation," said lead author Carleton.</p>

The observation was being made under JWST's PEARLS (Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science) observing programme and the telescope was aimed at a galaxy cluster designated as CLG1212. But as the scientists trained JWST's lenses at the galaxy cluster, they found a wispy body in the background. This was PEARLSDG, the galaxy responsible for photobombing the galaxy cluster in front of it. PEARLSDG is an isolated dwarf galaxy and scientists found that there was no star-forming activity in the galaxy. <p>Ancient groupings of stars scattered around the Milky Way galaxy, or globular clusters, are densely packed with stars more than other regions of the galaxy. In the case of 27 Tucanae, there are over one million stars in a sphere with 120 lightyears diameter and can be observed with the naked eye.</p>

<p>Researchers from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) created the most detailed image of 47 Tucanae with 450 hours of radio measurements with ATCA. They found an unusual radio wave source in the centre, around 14,500 lightyears from the Sun. They believe that a middle-sized black hole or a pulsar might be producing it.</p>

He added, "While intermediate-mass black holes are thought to exist in globular clusters, there hasn't been a clear detection of one yet."</p>

<p>Supermassive black holes at the centre of galaxies can be as gigantic as millions, or even billions, of suns. Medium-sized black holes are the missing connection between stellar black holes, left over from the deaths of giant stars and supermassive black holes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday (January 8), the ESA posted the image on its official handle on X (formerly Twitter).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The image shows 'Arp 122'. It's a galaxy that contains two galaxies that are in the process of merging. In the upper part of this merger, is the galaxy NGC 6040. It is a spiral galaxy that's currently being warped due to the merger. Immediately below it, we have LEDA 59642, another spiral galaxy that's visible in 'face-on' position.</p>

<p>A recent photo of an apparently ancient galaxy with its distinctive properties could help scientists understand the formation of and the origins of the Milky Way galaxy. The path-breaking picture of the 12 billion-year-old spiral galaxy gives more detailed information on its structure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ancient galaxy is named BRI 1335-0417 and is also known by astronomers as the furthest spiral galaxy. The new snapshot was clicked by a state-of-the-art telescope called (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) ALMA, said lead author Dr Takafumi Tsukui.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Gas is a key ingredient for forming stars and can give us important clues about how a galaxy is actually fuelling its star formation", Dr Tsukui said. But to his surprise, his team was not just only able to capture the motion of gas but also detected a seismic wave in the BRI 1335-0417. This is the first time that seismic activity has been revealed in a galaxy.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Oldest galaxy revealed galactic motion and seismic wave activity</strong></h2>

<p>The photo revealed an intriguing detail about the BRI 1335-0417 galaxy’s disk, which is a flattened mass of rotating stars, gas, and dust that moves in a way that is similar to ripples spreading on a pond after a stone is thrown into it. This can be held as a strong cue to know more about how the galaxy was formed.</p>

<p>Scientists have observed a disc of gas whirling around a star. Now this in itself may not be an uncommon thing as such a stage is reached when a star and the planetary system around it are&nbsp;forming.&nbsp;But this is the first time such a phenomenon has been observed outside our own Milky Way galaxy.</p>

<p>This may point to the possibility that our understanding and model of star formation is widely distributed throughout the Universe.</p>

<p>The phenomenon was spotted by astronomers and researchers as it took place in LMC, the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is a dwarf galaxy about 179,000 light-years away from our galaxy.</p>

<p>"When I first saw evidence for a rotating structure in the ALMA data I could not believe that we had detected the first extragalactic accretion disc, it was a special moment," says astronomer Anna McLeod of Durham University in the UK as quoted on the European Southern Observatory (ESO0 website).</p>

<p>“The frequency of light changes depending on how fast the gas emitting the light is moving towards or away from us,” explains Jonathan Henshaw, a research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “This is precisely the same phenomenon that occurs when the pitch of an ambulance siren changes as it passes you and the frequency of the sound goes from higher to lower.”&nbsp;</p>

NASA shares image of 'Hidden galaxy' which is 11 million light-years away from Earth

<p>Residents within an 80-kilometre&nbsp;radius of Beltrami County, Minnesota, reported witnessing a bright flash and hearing a "sonic boom" in the sky on Monday night (Nov 13).</p>

<p>To uncover this mysterious episode, NASA astronomers and local astrophysics professors are collaborating. Footage from an airport captured a "horizontal" object streaking across the sky, leading experts to believe it was not a typical meteorite.</p>

<h2><strong>What do NASA scientists suspect it to be?</strong></h2>

<p>NASA examined airport footage displaying a distinctive object's trajectory as the sonic boom resonated.</p>

<p>A meteorite specialist estimated the object's size as that of a refrigerator, entering the atmosphere at speeds ranging from 48,000 -&nbsp;2,09,300&nbsp;kilometres<strong>&nbsp;</strong>per hour.</p>

<p>Despite initial concerns, Beltrami County Emergency Management dismissed it as a meteorite due to its proximity to Earth.</p>

<p>Called the Maisie's Galaxy, it is said to have formed about 390 million years after the Big Bang. For reference, the universe as a whole is about 13.77 billion years old.</p>

<p>Maisie’s Galaxy was named after the daughter of the project’s principal investigator, Steven Finkelstein, an astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin.</p>

<p>The image was first taken in June 2022 as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS), and it was recently confirmed that the galaxy that was detected last summer is in fact among the earliest ever found.</p>

<p>“The exciting thing about Maisie's galaxy is that it was one of the first distant galaxies identified by JWST, and of that set, it's the first to actually be spectroscopically confirmed," Steven Finkelstein said.</p>

<p>It is touted to be one of the four earliest confirmed galaxies observed.</p>

<p>The latest analysis was led by Pablo Arrabal Haro, a postdoctoral research associate at the National Science Foundation's National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory.</p>

<p>The CEERS team is currently evaluating about 10 other galaxies that might be from an era even earlier than Maisie's.</p>

<p>Most objects that are outside of our galaxy appear to be receding and take&nbsp;a bit of time to figure out.</p>

<p>Hence to calculate&nbsp;how old it is, astronomers&nbsp;measure its redshift—the amount that its colour has been shifted due to its motion away from us.</p>

Scientists observe glowing black holes in colliding galaxies 

<p>A supermassive blackhole has changed its direction and is now facing Earth, scientists at the Royal Astronomical Society discovered, after they reclassified a galaxy that is 657 million light-years away from the blue planet.</p>

<p>According to scientists, this galaxy— called PBC J2333.9-2343— has a blazar (active galactic nucleus) in its core with a relativistic jet (which is also known as a super-massive black hole).</p>

<p>Blazars are very high energy objects and are considered to be one of the most powerful phenomena in the universe.</p>

<p>Researchers have said that the galaxy now stretches nearly 4 million light-years across — nearly 40 times the size of the Milky Way.</p>

Their research published on March 21 has revealed that the galaxy—which was earlier classified as a radio galaxy—drastically turned its direction by up to 90 degrees, and is now directly pointing towards Earth.</p>

<p>“We started to study this galaxy as it showed peculiar properties,” spokesperson, Dr Lorena Hernández-García said.</p>

<p>"Our hypothesis was that the relativistic jet of its supermassive black hole&nbsp;had changed its direction, and to confirm that idea we had to carry out a lot of observations.”</p>

<p>“The fact that we see the nucleus is not feeding the lobes anymore means that they are very old. They are the relics of past activity, whereas the structures located closer to the nucleus represent younger and active jets.”</p>
