PM Narendra Modi meets Japan's Kishida on sidelines of G7 in Hiroshima

<p>Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky&nbsp;reached the Japanese city of Hiroshima on a French aircraft on Saturday to attend the G7 summit that is scheduled to run through Sunday. The Ukrainian president was escorted by a large convoy of vehicles as he arrived in Hiroshima.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>G7 position on Russia</strong></h2>

<p>G7 leaders on Friday pledged to impose more sanctions on Russia in a show of strength for&nbsp;Ukraine. The leaders vowed "to stand together against Russia's illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine."</p>

<p>The G7 countries have taken a collective stance on Russia over its Ukraine invasion. In 2014, Russia's annexation of Crimea and its involvement in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine led to its suspension from the then-G8, which became the G7. The G7 countries condemned Russia's actions as a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.</p>

<p>Since then, the G7 has maintained a firm stance on Russia. The group has consistently expressed concerns over Russia's actions in areas such as Ukraine, its destabilising activities in other countries, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and human rights issues.</p>

<p>G7 nations in a joint statement said the countries are "imposing further sanctions and measures to increase the costs to Russia and those who are supporting its war effort" to "starve Russia's war machine."</p>

<p>"We are also building on the success of our efforts to ensure that Russia is no longer able to weaponize the availability of energy against us and against the world," the statement added.</p>

<p>UK PM Rishi Sunak tweeted that ensuring Ukraine wins is the most important thing the leaders can do for global peace and security. "We are banning all imports of Russian diamonds, copper, aluminium and nickel. Sanctions are having a clear impact in degrading Putin’s war effort. The G7 stands united with Ukraine," he tweeted.&nbsp;<br />

Ukraine’s Zelensky lands in Hiroshima on French aircraft to attend G7 summit

<p>The Japanese government refrained from using the phrase "Global South" in the communiqué that the G-7 leaders issued at the summit in Hiroshima. Therefore, the term is considered inappropriate for such a document.</p>

<p>Change is slow in Japan. To nudge the country towards legally recognising same-sex marriage, on Sunday crowds of cheering, flag-waving crowds in Tokyo came together for the nation's first full Pride parade in four years. The Pride parade comes ahead of next month's Group of Seven (G7) summit.</p>

<p>Japan as per Reuters is the only G7 industrial power that does not recognise same-sex marriage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, growing support from the nation's top business lobby and major companies is putting pressure on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government and his conservative ruling party to change that.</p>

<p>As per organiser estimates, around 10,000 people marched in Sunday's Pride parade in Tokyo's Shibuya district.</p>

<p>"Japan is really far behind ... We will fight until the entire country has same-sex marriage," said Himama, one of the participants to Reuters.</p>

<p>The traditional nation's constitution refers to marriage as being between "both sexes" and mentions "the equal rights of husband and wife".&nbsp;</p>

<p>For Japan to allow same-sex marriage, an amendment to its civil code would be required.</p>

<p>However, ahead of the summit, some lawmakers have vowed to pass a law promoting "understanding of LGBTQ". Activists and business leaders have called this a good step, but say that it falls short of Japan's last year G7 commitment to ensuring equal rights and anti-discrimination measures for LGBTQ.</p>

<p>Reuters reports that in Japan, the number of municipalities allowing same-sex couples to enter partnership agreements has increased significantly from 26 to around 300 since the last pre-pandemic Pride parade in 2019, covering roughly 65 per cent of the population.&nbsp;</p>

Despite this, it is considered a positive development in a country where LGBTQ+ rights have been slow to progress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A district court in Japan's Sapporo in March 2021 ruled the nation's ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. The Sapporo court argued that laws or regulations that deprive same-sex couples of the legal benefits of marriage are discriminatory and violate Article 14 of the Japanese Constitution. The court also ruled that Article 24 of the Constitution, which defines marriage as "based only on the mutual consent of both sexes", does not prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages. However, in June 2022, another district court, this one in Osaka, upheld the constitutionality of the ban on same-sex marriage.&nbsp;</p>

Global leaders to discuss AI and ChatGPT at G7 summit

Japan will be hosting a summit of G7 leaders in May. Will it be all about bashing Putin? Will Western allies use the G7 podium for condemning Russia only? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Will G7 become a platform for bashing Russia?

<p>On June 26, in the picturesque venue of Bavaria's Schloss Elmau castle, the cameras captured the leaders of the G-7 showing signs of unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. With hubris, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson extolled, <em>"Ride for life, G-7!</em>" In all this grandiose, what the cameras failed to capture was the bleak political situation back home for President Biden, Prime Minister Johnson, President Macron, and Chancellor Scholz.</p>

<p>In an endeavor to align democracies against the autocracies of Russia and China, Joe Biden visited Germany and Spain, but the democracy he leads has been dealing with the ramifications of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the right to abortion. Meanwhile, if the polls are to be believed, President Biden's approval rating is at its lowest because of a sharp rise in energy and food prices, making his party's road to winning the midterm elections an improbable task. If he and his party lose the November midterm elections, he will be a lame-duck president. And given how polarised American lawmakers are at present, it will probably make it impossible for Biden to pass a legislation, resulting in political paralysis.</p>

<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's approval rating has taken a serious beating after the Partygate scandal came to light. The polls as of June 2&nbsp;suggest that 69 per cent&nbsp;of the British public feel that their leader is performing badly. As a result of breaking COVID lockdown rules, he goes down in history as the first incumbent Prime Minister to be fined. In a no-confidence vote pushed by the backbenchers, the British Prime Minister, to his surprise, witnessed 148 (41 per cent) members of his conservative party vote to oust him. Although Johnson survived the no-confidence motion by a thin margin, history indicates that his political future is still uncertain. In recent times, three leaders hailing from the conservative party who survived the no-confidence vote were never the same after the process. Among the three, both Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher were ultimately forced out. John Major survived but lost to Tony Blair in two years. On top of this, there is the rising inflation that is hitting new records every day. The last time the British public became a victim of this level of rising inflation was in the 1800s as a result of the Napoleonic wars that drained the country's resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there is the French President, Emmanuel Macron, who presided over a successful presidential campaign and managed to get re-elected to be the only President to do so in twenty years. He assumed office for the second time, bridging huge divisions among voters who were concerned about rising inflation, the Ukraine crisis, the repercussions of immigration on the French national identity, etc. But despite the tide being on his side, Macron squandered the opportunity to capitalize on his resounding victory. In the subsequent parliamentary elections, he and his party faced a major setback in gaining an absolute majority in Parliament. President Macron is now increasingly compared to a lame-duck president, who, going forward, will have to entreat consensus from other parties, including that of Marine Le Pen's far-right party and Jean-Luc Melenchon's left party, to pass any legislation. At home, Macron is now challenged with complex political arithmetic in the parliament, explained by his Prime Minister as a <em>"risk to our country."</em></p>

<p>In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been struggling to find his footing after succeeding Angela Merkel who served for 16 years. Scholz, unlike the other leaders in the US, UK, and France, has experienced internal setbacks in part due to the way he has been handling the Ukraine situation. Scholz has been criticized by the lawmakers in the Bundestag and the European Union for his lukewarm, ambiguous, and slow walking policies in assisting Kyiv.</p>

<p>Despite initial hiccups, German heavy weapons were delivered to Ukraine as Olaf Scholz was hosting the G7 leaders. However, in light of Ukraine's military defeats, the chancellor is under pressure from EU lawmakers to take further action, who are vociferously demanding to know what is stopping him. Recently, a letter was penned by six MEPs calling upon Germany to ramp up supplies to Ukraine. The letter stated, <em>"We either show united strength or the war continues. Half hearted support out of fear of Russian reprisal will only prolong human suffering and increase the economic fallout of the conflict."</em>&nbsp;Given that Scholz succeeded a stalwart leader like Angela Merkel of such high stature, who was also well-liked in other capitals of Europe, it is quite obvious that he would be expected to meet the challenges of keeping Germany's image in good stead.</p>

<p>All four leaders are faced with roughly similar kinds of challenges at home, that is, increased populism against the backdrop of a weak global economy, besieged institutions, a polarised political landscape, and rising inflation rates driven by the Russian war. Although unity against an aggressor could be widely sought after and pleasing on the world stage, ultimately, it could boil down to what's happening at home.</p>

On June 26, in the picturesque venue of Bavaria's Schloss Elmau castle, the cameras captured the leaders of the G-7 showing signs of unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. With hubris, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson extolled, "Ride for life, G-7!" In all this grandiose, what the cameras failed to capture was the bleak political situation back home for President Biden, Prime Minister Johnson, President Macron, and Chancellor Scholz. In an endeavor to align democracies against the autocracies of Russia and China, Joe Biden visited Germany and Spain, but the democracy he leads has been dealing with the ramifications of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the right to abortion. Meanwhile, if the polls are to be believed, President Biden's approval rating is at its lowest because of a sharp rise in energy and food prices, making his party's road to winning the midterm elections an improbable task. If he and his party lose the November midterm elections, he will be a lame-duck president. And given how polarised American lawmakers are at present, it will probably make it impossible for Biden to pass a legislation, resulting in political paralysis. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's approval rating has taken a serious beating after the Partygate scandal came to light. The polls as of June 2 suggest that 69 per cent of the British public feel that their leader is performing badly. The last time the British public became a victim of this level of rising inflation was in the 1800s as a result of the Napoleonic wars that drained the country's resources. Then there is the French President, Emmanuel Macron, who presided over a successful presidential campaign and managed to get re-elected to be the only President to do so in twenty years. At home, Macron is now challenged with complex political arithmetic in the parliament, explained by his Prime Minister as a "risk to our country." In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been struggling to find his footing after succeeding Angela Merkel who served for 16 years. Scholz, unlike the other leaders in the US, UK, and France, has experienced internal setbacks in part due to the way he has been handling the Ukraine situation. Scholz has been criticized by the lawmakers in the Bundestag and the European Union for his lukewarm, ambiguous, and slow walking policies in assisting Kyiv. Despite initial hiccups, German heavy weapons were delivered to Ukraine as Olaf Scholz was hosting the G7 leaders. However, in light of Ukraine's military defeats, the chancellor is under pressure from EU lawmakers to take further action, who are vociferously demanding to know what is stopping him. Recently, a letter was penned by six MEPs calling upon Germany to ramp up supplies to Ukraine. The letter stated, "We either show united strength or the war continues. Half hearted support out of fear of Russian reprisal will only prolong human suffering and increase the economic fallout of the conflict." Given that Scholz succeeded a stalwart leader like Angela Merkel of such high stature, who was also well-liked in other capitals of Europe, it is quite obvious that he would be expected to meet the challenges of keeping Germany's image in good stead. All four leaders are faced with roughly similar kinds of challenges at home, that is, increased populism against the backdrop of a weak global economy, besieged institutions, a polarised political landscape, and rising inflation rates driven by the Russian war. Although unity against an aggressor could be widely sought after and pleasing on the world stage, ultimately, it could boil down to what's happening at home. Shirtless western leaders would be a 'disgusting sight': Putin

What did the G7 Summit 2022 achieve? For all its optics, the summit fell short on substance. The promises made were vague, the policies drafted unclear. Does this defeat the very purpose of this body? Does the G7 hold any relevance today? Palki Sharma reports.

Gravitas: What did the G7 Summit achieve?

Germany hosted the G7 summit for three days and along with the leaders, diplomats, delegates and representatives, a large number of people assembled to protest against the leaders. One of them was the brave movement, a group of protesters demanded for action against child sexual violence. WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Siddhant Sibbal brings you this ground report.

Demonstrators rally in Munich against G7

The leaders of the G7 countries had a lot to talk about but very little to offer. WION brings you the biggest highlights from the G7 summit and explains why was it high on optics and low on substance.

G7 Summit's biggest highlights: High on optics, low on substance?

Before Russia-Ukraine war, climate change was meant to be the main focus of this year's G7 Summit but a crippling food and energy shortage eclipsed climate priority. However, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised climate action at G7 Summit
