In August 1945, the United States detonated two atomic bombs over Japanese cities. American bombing raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki marked the first use of atomic weapons in a war. Tens of thousands were killed in the initial explosions. Many more later succumbed to radiation poisoning. The incident altered the life of a survivor.
