This comes after IMF expressed concern over the PKR 2,600 billion power tariff. The Fund had suggested the government immediately privatize the public-owned profitable DISCOs, reported ARY News. As reported by ANI, keeping in mind the debilitating state of loss-making DISCOs, the fund advised the handover of these DISCOS to the provinces. "The hike in power tariff will be applicable from July 01," said the sources privy to the matter. The decision may cost the new coalition government popular support adding to the political uncertainty that has taken over the country since Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament early last month. Last week Mr Khan held a huge political rally, drawing huge crowds and heavily criticizing the current coalition government and the military. At least 1,700 protesters were arrested by the police in Punjab. Some officials now fear that the government’s move to appease the I.M.F. could hand Mr Khan a wave of public outrage that he could manipulate on the streets. Mr Khan’s government had also applied for a bailout package from IMF but had failed to meet loan conditions. Mr Sharif had been reluctant to end government electricity subsidies and oil subsidies fearing a public backlash that could affect his party’s chance of success in the next general elections. Those elections are scheduled to be held next year, but the new government has come under mounting public pressure from Mr Khan’s supporters to hold them earlier. As protests over a regional energy price hike engulfed other regions of the vast former Soviet country, Kazakhstan's president declared states of emergency in Almaty and an oil-rich western region Wednesday.

Kazakstan's financial capital Almaty has been in chaos since late Tuesday after police fired tear gas and stun grenades to quell protests that began in the west of the country over a spike in Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices.

According to the presidential website, President Qasym-Jomart Tokayev declared states of emergency in Almaty and the hydrocarbon-rich western region of Mangystau from January 5 until January 19. &nbsp;

In both territories, a curfew will be in effect from 23:00 to 7:00.

Earlier, Tokayev had called for the return of the order in a video posted on Facebook by his press secretary Berik Uali.

"Don't submit to provocations from within and without. Do not heed calls to assault government buildings. This is a crime for which you will be punished. The government will not be felled, but we don't need conflict," Tokayev said in the address.

As protesters marched through Almaty's central streets shouting anti-government slogans and sometimes attacking vehicles, police fired stun grenades and tear gas at a crowd of over five thousand people.&nbsp;

"Old man out" was chanted in reference to Tokayev's still-powerful predecessor and mentor Nursultan Nazarbayev. "Government resign" was screamed before police moved in, sparking battles between protesters and police in the city square.&nbsp;

Two independent news websites that reported on the protests appeared to have been blocked, as well as the messaging apps Telegram, Signal and WhatsApp.&nbsp;

Across the country of 19 million, smaller protests have been taking place since Sunday, beginning in Zhanaozen in Mangystau. &nbsp;

On Monday, the central bank said it would provide fuel importers with dollars at a rate of 3,900 pounds to the greenback instead of the official rate, in compliance with a government decision issued last week.

The move effectively reduces subsidies on fuel as the central bank tries to shore up fast-diminishing foreign currency reserves.

The energy ministry said it would issue revised fuel prices on Tuesday based on the new exchange rate.

It said fuel tankers docked in Lebanese waters had started offloading fuel shipments that would boost supply in the coming days.&nbsp;

Lebanese have flocked to the gas pumps ahead of the price hikes, causing major congestion and massive queues.
