France, Belgium and Portugal all blinked with a Euro 2024 place in their grasps but clung on for one-goal victories on Friday night which made them the first sides to qualify for next year's tournament.

Belgium led by three goals in Vienna and won 3-2 with 10 men to ensure a top-two finish in Group F and a ticket to the finals in Germany.

France led by two Kylian Mbappe goals in Amsterdam and beat the depleted Dutch 2-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo was another to score twice but Portugal also wobbled with a two-goal lead before beating Slovakia 3-2 in Porto in Group J.

In Amsterdam, Mbappe leapt to hook home a volley after seven minutes and then added a second eight minutes into the second half with a sumptuous curler.

It was his 42nd international goal, overtaking French legend Michel Platini and putting him fourth in the all-time list.

Quilindschy Hartman replied on his Dutch debut but Mbappe almost clinched his hat-trick, when his late drive hit the crossbar.

"We mustn't get carried away, but we must appreciate and not trivialise things," said France coach Didier Deschamps.

"To qualify with two games to go, with six wins, 13 goals scored and just one conceded, I'm very proud of what the group has achieved, both in terms of spirit and on the pitch."

"We got the result we wanted, we achieved our objective."

Greece won 2-0 in Dublin to eliminate Ireland and pull clear of the Dutch.

Giorgos Giakoumakis and Giorgos Masouras scored in the first half for the 2004 European champions who moved three points clear of the Dutch.

The two nations meet on Monday in Athens.

Ronaldo double

Unbeaten Belgium survived an Austria fightback in Vienna.

Dodi Lukebakio, with his first two international goals, and captain Romelu Lukaku with his ninth of the campaign, put Belgium 3-0 up after 58 minutes.

Konrad Laimer replied with a long-range drive. With Belgium reduced to 10 men when Amadou Onana collected a second yellow card, Arthur Theate handled in his own box with six minutes left.

Marcel Sabitzer converted the penalty to make it an anxious last few minutes for the Belgians.

But they held out to secure a third straight trip to the Euros. The Red Devils' last Euro qualifying loss was a 1-0 defeat in Wales in June 2015.

Austria remains seven points clear of idle Sweden, who have a game in hand.

Cristiano Ronaldo moved to 125 international goals as the Portuguese made it seven wins from seven matches in Group J.

They have 21 points which ensures them a top two finish.

Goncalo Ramos had opened the scoring for Portugal. Ronaldo then converted a penalty.

David Hancko's deflected strike gave Slovakia hope – the first goal Portugal had conceded in qualifying – but Ronaldo soon tapped in a Bruno Fernandes cross. Stanislav Lobotka's long-range strike made for a nervy finale but Portugal held on.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is having a great time, playing a lot of minutes and scoring a lot of goals for his club," said Portugal coach Roberto Martinez.

"He has a lot of experience with the national team and he's a reference point for young players."

Slovakia stayed second in the group, but the pursuers inched closer.

Third-place Luxembourg drew 1-1 in Iceland to close to two points behind Slovakia who visit the Duchy on Monday.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are a further two points back after beating Liechtenstein 2-0 with first-half goals from Amar Rahmanovic and Miroslav Stevanovic.

Football: France, Belgium and Portugal qualify for Euro 2024 with last gasp wins

A Chechen-origin man fatally stabbed a teacher on Friday (Oct 13) in northeastern France. The attack was quickly denounced by French President Emmanuel Macron as an act of “Islamic terror.” Now, the country’s Interior Ministry has claimed that the attack in the town of Arras might be linked to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

There was “probably a link between what’s happening in the Middle East and this incident,” said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

France has subsequently raised the alert level in the country to the highest, with authorities saying it was not triggered by one particular incident. The country has also decided to deploy 7,000 soldiers across the country to maintain stability and peace. The deployment of the soldiers from Operation Sentinelle will be completed by Monday evening, according to the Elysee presidential palace.

Anti-terrorism prosecutor's office investigating the case

The investigation of the case has been handed over to the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office. The suspect, who was later arrested by police, has been identified as Mohamed M.

He was a former student of the Lycee Gambetta High School, where the attack happened. He shouted “Allahu Akbar” before killing the teacher.

The 20-year-old man featured on a state watchlist of people identified as a potential security risk. The list carries thousands of names but only some hundreds are monitored. Mohamed M was amongst those being monitored and his phone had also been tapped. However, there was no indication that he could carry out such a fatal attack.

Macron’s appeal

Only a day earlier, Macron had urged the French to remain united and refrain from bringing the Israel-Hamas conflict home.

Visiting the site of the attack, Macron paid his respects to the dead teacher, Dominique Bernard, whose body still lay under a cover surrounded by a pool of blood.

France: Teacher killed in knife attack at school, two injured; police start ‘terror’ probe

France's hopes that captain Antoine Dupont will be fit to face South Africa in the World Cup quarter-final were boosted on Wednesday when the scrum-half trained for the second day wearing a headguard. Dupont, 26, was given the green light to return to full contact sessions earlier this week after undergoing surgery on a fractured cheekbone he suffered during the pool match against Namibia on September 21.

Dupont is now in line to feature for the hosts against the Springboks on Saturday after first trying out the protection during Tuesday's session. "Antoine, is someone who is intelligent, sensible," France No. 8 Gregory Alldritt told reporters on Wednesday. "If he says he can play again, it means that he's fully able to do so," he added.

Dupont spent a few days at home following surgery before returning to France's set-up last week to participate in some running and bike exercises. "He's doing well," said France scrum coach William Servat. "He's always been involved, even during his rest period.

"Now he's even more involved. He's back with us, he is taking part in a very active way." Les Bleus will name their team to face the World Cup holders on Friday.

France assistant coach Laurent Labit opined on the clash vs SA and said: "We know what we're up against and who we're up against. We have a lot of respect for this team and what they've done. They're an inspiration to us in terms of what they've achieved."

Labit added that France would maybe be more ambitious than they were 11 months ago. "When we played them last November we decided to close down the game and try to take as few risks as possible," he explained.

"We had opportunities to play but we were so stuck in the pattern that we lacked ambition. We took that into account. In a World Cup quarter-final will the space be there or not? The priority will be to contain this team and find the space." In their only World Cup meeting, in the 1995 semi-finals, France played with ambition against the Springboks but were denied victory after having three tries ruled out.

"We were denied three tries. I don't see why those tries weren't valid," former France winger Emile Ntamack told RMC Sport. "But it was decided otherwise. We still have a bitter taste in our mouths because we feel robbed."

Rugby WC: France captain Antoine Dupont trains with headguard before quarter-final tie vs South Africa

The leaders of a coup in Niger have ordered the first convoy of French troops to depart the Sahel country on Tuesday, according to the country's military rulers. The declaration was made in response to Algeria's decision to "postpone" attempts to mediate a resolution to the issue.

French exit from Niger comes in compliance with Junta's demands

Niger's military rulers have said a first convoy of French troops will on Tuesday begin preparations to leave the Sahel country, after the leaders of a coup ordered them out.

The announcement comes as Algeria decided to "postpone" mediation efforts to find a way out of the crisis.

"Operations for the departure of the first convoy escorted by our defence and security forces will begin tomorrow," said a statement read on state television Monday.

The statement did not specify the destination of the convoy.

The withdrawal of some 1,400 French troops had been demanded by Niger's ruling generals shortly after they seized power at the end of July.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who had sought to make a special ally of Niger, said in September that the troops would exit "by the end of the year", complying with a demand by the new regime.

The French soldiers are in Niger as part of a wider fight against jihadists across the Sahel region.

After some meetings and "exchanges between our authorities and the French side, a timetable for the withdrawal of their troops has been determined with mutual agreement", Monday's statement said.

Niger's military rulers have said a first convoy of French troops will on Tuesday begin preparations to leave the Sahel country, after the leaders of a coup ordered them out.

The French soldiers are in Niger as part of a wider fight against jihadists across the Sahel region. After some meetings and "exchanges between our authorities and the French side, a timetable for the withdrawal of their troops has been determined with mutual agreement", Monday's statement said. Israel-Hamas war: Several foreign nationals killed, abducted amid attacks on Israel

Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in France and a symbol of the Alps, has seen a decrease in its height over the past two years, according to new research reported the BBC. This decline has been attributed to the impact of climate change on the region.

The latest measurements of Mont Blanc's peak indicate that its height now stands at 4,805.59 metres, which is 2.22 metres shorter than the measurement recorded in 2021.

These periodic measurements are conducted by climate scientists to monitor the effects of climate change on the Alps.

Jean des Garets, the Chief Geometer involved in the research, told the BBC that the reduced height might be due to lower levels of rainfall during the preceding summer.

Des Garets stressed that Mont Blanc's summit is dynamic, with its altitude and position constantly changing by as much as five meters. He speculates that in another two years, the mountain's height might differ significantly.

While some experts agree with the recent findings, claiming that Mont Blanc has been losing approximately 13 centimetres in height annually, others highlight the complexity of the issue. The most recent survey was conducted by a team from the Haute-Savoie regional administration, using a drone for precision.

In comparison, the summit's height in 2021 was recorded as 4,807.81 meters, almost a meter less than the measurement taken in 2017. Denis Borel, one of the surveyors involved, underscores the significant loss of ice and snow, approximately 3,500 cubic metres, which is equivalent to the volume of an Olympic swimming pool. This loss is considered substantial in comparison to historical measurements.

Climate change impact

Climatologists assert that while there is evidence of a slight decline, around 15 to 20 centimetres since 2001, in Mont Blanc's snowy summit, it would require approximately 50 years of measurements to draw definitive conclusions about global warming's influence at such high altitudes, around 4,800 metres.

France has agreed on future contracts with Armenia to supply it with military equipment to help ensure its defences, Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said on Tuesday during a visit to Yerevan.

It was the first trip to Armenia by a Western government minister since Azerbaijani forces captured Nagorno-Karabakh, a separatist ethnic Armenian region within Azerbaijan, in a lightning military operation on Sept. 20.

Colonna travelled to Armenia to assess its immediate needs amid an influx of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh and fears of Azerbaijani military action against Armenia following Karabakh's fall, diplomats said.

During a live-streamed joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Colonna said she had also asked European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to include Armenia in the scope of the European Peace Facility (EPF), an EU military aid fund.

"France will be vigilant regarding the territorial integrity of Armenia," Colonna said. "I hope that (EU) member states will send a clear signal to all those who would be tempted to call into question the sovereignty of Armenia."

She declined to elaborate on what sort of military aid was envisaged for Armenia under future supply contracts.

France and its Western allies fear that Armenia and its government could be destabilised after its historical military ally, Russia, appeared to abandon it over the last few weeks.

The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is a delicate subject in Paris. A week after Baku took control of the enclave, prompting more than 100,000 people to flee to Armenia, French lawmakers from across the political spectrum criticised President Emmanuel Macron's government for not doing enough to help Karabakh's Armenians.

France's population includes between 400,000 to 600,000 people of Armenian origin, a powerful lobby group during election periods.

Paris has already provided 12.5 million euros ($13.08 million) in humanitarian aid to Armenia and French officials have backed the idea of imposing EU sanctions on Baku.

But they concede that there is a reluctance within the EU to do so just a year after the bloc agreed a major energy deal to replace Russian supplies following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Karabakh is viewed internationally as part of Azerbaijan but had been run as a breakaway ethnic Armenian statelet since the 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Previously a subject of ridicule, bedbugs have become a contentious political matter, with reports of infestations in trains, the Paris metro, and movie theatres.

With France hosting major sporting events like the Rugby World Cup and the upcoming 2024 Olympics, concerns are mounting, reported AFP.

In recent weeks, France has witnessed a surge in reported bedbug cases, causing alarm among citizens. Infestations have been reported in various public spaces, including trains, the Paris metro, and cinemas.

As France gears up to host the Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympics, these concerns have taken on added significance. Notably, two schools—one in Marseille and another in Villefranche-sur-Saone—had to be closed for extensive cleaning due to bedbug infestations.

France to hold emergency meetings amid major bedbug infestation

European Union foreign ministers convened in Kyiv on Monday (Oct 2) for the first-ever meeting outside the 27-nation bloc and reiterated its long-term support for the war-torn country. The move is being seen as a show of support after Slovakia recently elected a pro-Russian candidate and the United States Congress passed a temporary spending bill with no aid for the Ukraine war.

‘Historic’ gathering in Kyiv

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell described the gathering in Kyiv as “historic” but also said no concrete announcements would be made.

“It is the first time that we met in a candidate country. And, unfortunately, it was also the first time that the foreign ministers of the European Union met in a country at war,” said Borrell.

The meeting also comes amid growing disagreements among EU members over support for Ukraine and Kyiv’s high-stakes counteroffensive against the Russian forces with no major success so far.

“I am sure that Ukraine and the entire free world are capable of winning this confrontation. But our victory depends directly on our cooperation with you,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the ministers.

Kyiv brushes off US and Slovakia issues

The US Congress recently passed an emergency bill, to stop the government from shutting down, which excluded aid to Ukraine. However, Kyiv has said that they have been assured by the US officials that their support for Ukraine will continue.

“We don’t feel that the US support has been shattered...because the United States understands that what is at stake in Ukraine is much bigger than just Ukraine,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters.

US President Joe Biden said Republicans had pledged to provide Ukraine aid through a separate vote and assured that American support could not be interrupted “under any circumstances.”

Speaking about the election victory of pro-Russian Robert Fico in Slovakia, Kuleba said that it was “too early to judge” the impact of politics there.

This comes a day after Fico, following his win, said that the EU and NATO member nation is ready to help Ukraine in a “humanitarian way” but has rejected the prospect of providing any further military aid to Kyiv.

Kuleba also told Borrell that the Kremlin was investing “huge resources” to stir disunity among its allies and urged them to stand firm.

“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s greatest expectation is precisely that the West and the world will tire of standing on the side of Ukraine in this war,” said the Ukrainian official.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said that their being in Kyiv is a signal to Russia indicating the bloc’s determination to support Ukraine over the long term and “until it can win. It is also a message to Russia that it should not count on our weariness.”

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for measures like air defence and guaranteed energy supplies to prepare Ukraine for winter after Russia bombed energy infrastructure last year, saying, “We must prevent this together with everything we have, as far as possible.”

Russia on Western ‘fatigue’ over Ukraine war

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the US congressional vote was a sign of increasing divisions in the West over the war, but expects Americans to continue support calling it a “temporary phenomenon.”

“But we have repeatedly said before that according to our forecasts fatigue from this conflict, fatigue from the completely absurd sponsorship of the Kyiv regime, will grow in various countries, including the United States,” said Peskov.

He also defended Fico, saying it was “absurd” to label politicians who support their own country’s national interests as “pro-Russian”.

EU pledges support for Ukraine war at ‘historic’ meeting in Kyiv amid US, Slovakia issues

Russia uses artillery as its primary form of lethality in deep and close battles. Its combined arms elements are charged with positioning themselves so that the artillery can deliver destructive effects against their opponents. Now, NATO member France is sending additional Caesar howitzers to boost Ukraine’s defences. Moscow has been accusing the west of leading a war against Russia by proxy. Here's all you need to know.

The Capitals: Islamabad's game of thrones stacked against Imran Khan

France began vaccinating millions of ducks on Monday (Oct 2), becoming the only European country with a vaccination campaign against bird flu in a bid to avoid mass culls. The move comes despite countries like the United States and Japan saying that they would impose import restrictions on French poultry.

France has been one of the countries worst affected by the unprecedented global spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu.

“There’s high pressure from the virus, but vaccination should mean we only face individual cases, avoiding the tidal wave sweeping through farms,” said Jocelyn Marguerie, poultry chief at the SNGTV farm vets’ association, as quoted by AFP.

What is France planning to do?

Around 60 million ducks are to be vaccinated across the country over the next year after France made the two-jab course for ducklings as young as 10 days on farms raising more than 250 birds mandatory from October.

The first shots were administered on Monday morning to ducks on a farm in the Landes, a region in southwestern France in the presence of Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau. “It’s a moment of optimism, we have the feeling of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,” Fesneau told reporters there.

The total cost to vaccinate the millions of birds is estimated to be $102 million (96 million euros), out of which 85 per cent will be funded by the government.

The country’s first 80 million doses will come from pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim.

Bird flu in France

France’s liver for foie gras or meat-producing duck sector is especially sensitive to the virus. The country’s poultry population saw a wave of bird flu in 2015-17 and has suffered nearly constant outbreaks since 2020.

“This vaccination plan...is a world first: its goal is to protect all farmed birds and should put an end to the preventive slaughter of animals, which no one wants to live with anymore,” said duck and fois gras makers group CIFOG.

The discovery of one case would mean culling for the whole farm and others nearby, often bringing a heavy financial toll on French farmers.

“I’ve been caught up in four culls since 2016. I hope we’ll get back to being unscathed. (vaccination) has to work!” Thierry Dezes, who raises ducks in Landes and plans to jab some 5,000 ducklings, as quoted by AFP.

There has been some backlash about the move as one farmer told AFP how customers don’t want meat from “vaccinated ducks”.

US, Japan import restrictions

The US imposed restrictions on imports of French poultry starting October 1 citing a risk of introduction and spread of the virus into the country since vaccinated birds may not show signs of infection.

Meanwhile, a senior official at the Japanese ministry of agriculture told AFP that Tokyo would suspend imports of French poultry products after the vaccination campaign had started.

France to vaccinate millions of ducks against bird flu despite risk of import restrictions

The government of France took the vow to take action to “reassure and protect” the public after a “widespread” rise in bedbugs was reported in Paris.

In recent videos shared by residents of Paris, bedbugs are seen infesting movie theatres, public transportation, and other areas which have led to increasing demands for government action.

Speaking to French news station LCI, Deputy Mayor of Paris Emmanuel Gregoire said that the phenomenon is “widespread.”

"You have to understand that, in reality, no one is safe. Obviously, there are risk factors, but in reality, you can catch bedbugs anywhere and bring them home," he said.

Earlier, French Transport Minister Clement Beaune said that he would “bring together transport operators next week” to “undertake further action” to “reassure and protect” the public from increasing numbers of the blood-sucking insect.

An anti-bedbug campaign was launched by the French government three years ago which includes a dedicated information hotline and website.

However, Gregoire stated that despite that plan, “there are 3.6 million people who come into Paris every day, and bedbugs do not stop on the outskirts of the city.”

France’s national health and sanitary body's expert Johanna Fite said that the problem was “an emerging phenomenon in France and almost everywhere in the world.”

“It’s mainly due to the movement of people, populations travelling, the fact that people stay in short-term accommodation and bring back bedbugs in their suitcases or luggage,” said Johanna Fite, who belongs to Anses Department of Risk Assessment, while speaking to CNN.

“Professional companies which intervene in residential areas are telling us that currently the proportion of interventions for bedbugs is atypical compared to normal and is increasing rapidly,” he stated.

In recent videos shared by residents of Paris, bedbugs are seen infesting movie theatres, public transportation, and other areas which have led to increasing demands for government action. Speaking to French news station LCI, Deputy Mayor of Paris Emmanuel Gregoire said that the phenomenon is “widespread.” "You have to understand that, in reality, no one is safe. Spain, France, Brazil and even Australia are being looked at as possible future sites for NFL regular season games as the league ramps up its efforts to grow the game abroad, a league official said.

The NFL kicks off the first of this season's international games on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London before the series shifts for the first time to Frankfurt for two games starting Nov. 5.

"A major focus of the league and our clubs has been bringing our game abroad, connecting with fans, and growing the next generation of fans outside the U.S.," NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly told Reuters. "It's a long term commitment that we've been at for a while, but now we're doubling down."

While easily the most popular and profitable league in the U.S., the NFL's growth in soccer-obsessed Europe has been more modest.

NFL Europe, which began in 1991 with 10 teams, shuttered in 2007 and was replaced by regular season NFL games starting with a contest at Wembley in October 2007.

O'Reilly said the league now has a firm foothold in London, as well as in Mexico and Germany, and said passionate locals will outnumber expats and American tourists when Wembley hosts its 25th NFL game this weekend.

"This is not a novelty anymore," he said. "It may have been back at the very first game at Wembley, but now this is a really educated fanbase."

About 82% of tickets sold for two London games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month went to fans in the United Kingdom, the NFL said.

There are no immediate plans to add a club in London, or an entire four-team division in Europe, but O'Reilly said expanding the game's reach helps lay the groundwork in case that opportunity arises.

And while Saudi Arabia has controversially poured hundreds of millions of dollars into sports including golf and Formula One, O'Reilly said there were no discussions about hosting a game there, although he did not rule out the possibility.

"More broadly, the Middle East is an important part of the world and that's an area where we want continue to grow our fanbase," he said.

The NFL is also looking to add more international players and recently announced it would expand practice squads for all 32 teams to include one player born outside North America as part of its International Player Pathway (IPP) program.

Thirty-seven international players have signed with NFL teams since the program launched in 2017, including Australia's Jordan Mailata, who started at tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles in last season's Super Bowl.

O'Reilly said he expects that number to rise.

"There's a pathway to 150 foreign born players in the NFL in the not-so-distant future," he said.

This season's five international games are:

* Atlanta Falcons vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, Oct. 1, WembleyStadium * Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills, Oct. 8, Tottenham HotspurStadium * Baltimore Ravens vs. Tennessee Titans, Oct. 15, TottenhamHotspur Stadium * Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs, Nov. 5, FrankfurtStadium * Indianapolis Colts vs. New England Patriots, Nov. 12, Frankfurt Stadium

Six migrant women have been rescued from the back of a refrigerated lorry in France after they text-messaged a BBC reporter - setting off a desperate cross-border search.

Six migrant women have been rescued from the back of a refrigerated lorry in France after they text-messaged a BBC reporter - setting off a desperate cross-border search. Four Vietnamese and two Iraqi women were aboard the lorry, having spent more than 10 hours in a cramped space, surrounded by boxes of bananas, hoping to make it to UK or Ireland, when they realised the lorry was heading in the opposite direction. According to the women, the lorry doors had been sealed shut with an iron bar, meaning they were trapped inside. Desperate and running out of clean air to breathe, it was a race against time for the women. Watch | Gravitas: Essex Lorry Mystery: Who Were The 39 Migrants Victims That Died? × At around midday on Wednesday (Sep 27), Luu received a text on her phone which read: "There are some people who crossed the border from France to England in a refrigerated van." Before she could answer, a call came in and a panicked voice asked her: "Are you in Europe? Please help, it's urgent." The voice on the call was of a male and Luu was unable to recognise him. However, she understood that it was someone who knew her from when she covered the 2019 Essex lorry deaths. Authorities track the lorry Although the man was unable to provide proper details about the location of the lorry, he put one of the women in contact with the reporter. “It’s so cold, it [the cooler] keeps blowing,” one of the migrants told Luu over text, before sending two short videos showing the cramped space and the few dozen centimetres of floor space where the women could sit. After some communication, the texter was able to share her live GPS location, allowing the reporter to determine that the lorry was on the E15 highway near Dracé, north of Lyon. Luu then contacted a colleague in France and asked them to contact the closest police station. "We're so suffocated," came another message from the women, as the authorities attempted to track the lorry. The BBC reporter assured the women that they would be saved and told them to keep calm and avoid talking in order to save air. France's ambassador to Niger, on Wednesday (Sept 27), landed in Paris weeks after the post-coup regime in the West African country demanded the diplomat's expulsion.

As per news agency AFP reports, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna met Sylvain Itte "to thank him and his teams for his work in the service of our country under difficult conditions," the ministry said in a written statement.

Itte left Niamey along with six colleagues "around 4:00 am" (0300 GMT), a diplomatic source told AFP.

President Emanuel Macron, on Sunday (Sept 24), in a TV interview had announced that “France has decided to withdraw its ambassador.”

“In the coming hours our ambassador and several diplomats will return to France,” he added.

The French president further said that the military cooperation with the Niger was over and the troops would be withdrawn in “the months and weeks to come” with a full pullout by the end of the year.

“We will consult the putschists because we want this to be done peacefully,” he added.

Macron said that the junta “no longer wanted to fight against terrorism”.

Born in the Malian capital Bamako in 1959, Itte had been serving in the position of ambassador to Niger for a year.
