France has witnessed a disturbing surge in antisemitic acts, with over a thousand incidents reported since the deadly attack by a Hamas gunman on Israel on October 7. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has expressed deep concern over this rise.

According to Interior Minister Darmanin, the number of antisemitic acts in France has sharply risen in the aftermath of the attack on October 7.

The authorities have recorded more than a thousand such incidents. These acts have been a cause for significant worry and require immediate attention, as reported by AFP.

<h2>Arrests and international involvement</h2>

In response to these antisemitic acts, authorities have taken action, resulting in the arrest of 486 individuals who have been involved in such offenses.

Notably, 102 of those arrested are foreigners, pointing to international involvement in these disturbing incidents.

<h2>Paris becomes a hotspot</h2>

The Paris region has been a particular hotspot for antisemitic incidents, with Paris police chief Laurent Nunez revealing that 257 such acts were reported in this area alone. This concerning trend highlights the need for more focused efforts to address antisemitism in the French capital.

What's notable is that there is no typical profile for those who have been arrested in connection with antisemitic acts.

Perpetrators range from "young kids who say very serious things" to individuals associated with the pro-Palestinian cause who have crossed the line, according to authorities.

<h2>Ongoing investigations and suspicion in Lyon</h2>

Paris prosecutors are actively investigating incidents involving the defacement of buildings with Stars of David, which are perceived as threatening to the Jewish community.

Additionally, in Lyon, there are suspicions that antisemitism may have been a motive in an attack on a young Jewish woman who was stabbed in her home.

The attack is being treated as an attempted murder, but the woman's life is not in danger, and no arrests have been made at this time.

France to host Conference for Gaza civilians on November 9

France will host an international humanitarian conference for the civilian population in Gaza on Nov. 9 as it looks to coordinate aid for the besieged Palestinian enclave, four diplomatic sources said.

While Paris has offered its support for Israel over a deadly Oct. 7 attack by Hamas Islamists, there has been growing concern over civilian casualties that have soared under Israel's retaliatory bombardment that has seen thousands killed, wounded and displaced in Gaza.

President Emmanuel Macron confirmed to reporters in Brittany that the conference would take place.

The conference will be at head of state, government and foreign minister level. Key regional stakeholders such as Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf Arab countries will be invited as well as Western, European powers and G20 members, excluding Russia.

International institutions, including the United Nations and Arab League, and non-governmental organisations operating in Gaza will also be present, the diplomats said.

The Palestinian Authority would be present, but Israel was not set to be invited, they said, adding that Paris would inform Israel of the initiative and the work carried out at the conference.

The conference will aim to mobilise financial resources with several sectors identified for emergency support based on U.N. assessments of the immediate needs and the opening of strictly humanitarian crossing points into Gaza.

Re-establishing the supply of water, fuel and electricity would be under discussion, while ensuring accountability processes to ensure aid was not diverted to Hamas.

"The conference will also enable all participants to take stock of the support already being channelled to civilians in Gaza, assess requirements and announce fresh commitments, whether financial or in-kind," according to a diplomatic note seen by Reuters.

"The conference will furthermore serve as a forum for reiterating the obligation to respect international humanitarian law," it said.

France is sending two helicopter carriers off the coast of Gaza as it works with Israeli and Egyptian authorities to find a way to provide medical assistance to people affected by the bombings in the besieged area.

The diplomats said there would be a discussion to set up a maritime corridor to use sea lanes to ship humanitarian aid into Gaza, but also to see how ships could be used to help the wounded evacuated from Gaza.

"It is not so clear what results this will bring, but it is the right thing to do for Europe," said one of the diplomats.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday (Oct 29) said that he plans to enshrine abortion rights in the constitution by next year and make them "irreversible."

Taking to microblogging site X, Macron said a draft project is being readied and it would be submitted to the State Council, France's highest administrative court, next week.

"In 2024, the right of women to choose&nbsp;abortion&nbsp;will become irreversible," Macron said.

Welcoming the development, the minister for gender equality, Bérangère Couillard, said on X: “This is a victory for all women and a strong symbol sent to other countries of the world where our rights are losing ground.”

The declaration follows a promise made by Macron on March 8 (International Women's Day) in the wake of the US federal court overturning women’s abortion rights last year.

<h2>How French Constitution is amended?</h2>

In France, the constitution can be amended either by a referendum or approval by at least three-fifths of the members of both chambers of parliament united in a congress.

Post the Second World War, most of the changes to the constitution have been made through the congressional vote, notes AFP news agency.

According to Macron's office, Article 34 of the constitution would be amended to include that "the law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed."

<h2>Abortion laws in France&nbsp;</h2>

France decriminalised abortion in 1975 after passing a law in this regard. However, no changes were made in the constitution that could have guaranteed fundamental rights to pregnancy termination.

They marked the occasion by claiming their first points in Group A as Harry Maguire's 72nd-minute header secured a 1-0 win.

The result keeps alive their chances of advancing to the last 16 but they needed Onana to produce a brilliant save from Jordan Larsson's 97th-minute penalty to see the game out.

The spot-kick was awarded when Scott McTominay caught Mohamed Elyounoussi as he tried to hook a ball clear in the box, but Larsson -- whose father Henrik briefly played for United in 2007 -- could not convert the chance.

"It is incredible and a great night. Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana," coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster TNT Sports.

<h2>- Kane nets in Bayern win -</h2>

United are now back in contention to qualify but Bayern look set to run away with the group after making it three wins out of three with a 3-1 victory in Istanbul.

Kingsley Coman's early opener for the German champions was cancelled out by a Mauro Icardi penalty on the half-hour mark.

But Bayern pulled away in the second half, with Kane finishing in the 73rd minute to restore the visitors' lead with his 11th goal in 12 games for his new club.

He then set up Jamal Musiala to wrap up the win.

Bayern have now won 16 consecutive matches in the Champions League group phase and have not lost at this stage in over six years.

"I don't know how many group stage matches I've done as a coach, but it's always super difficult -- so it's great to find ourselves with nine points after three matches," said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

<h2>- 200 up for Ancelotti -</h2>

Madrid, the record 14-time European champions, also have three wins out of three in Group C after Rodrygo and Bellingham scored in a 2-1 victory over Braga in Portugal.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti was taking charge of his 200th game in the competition and he saw Rodrygo open the scoring on 16 minutes before Bellingham fired in just past the hour mark.

It was the England midfielder's third goal in as many Champions League games for his new club, and his 11th in 12 matches altogether since signing from Borussia Dortmund.

Alvaro Djalo pulled one back for Braga, but Real can secure qualification for the last 16 when they host the Portuguese side next.

Napoli are second in the group after a 1-0 win at Union Berlin, who are still without a point.

Giacomo Raspadori scored the only goal in the second half as the Italian champions won without star striker Victor Osimhen.

<h2>- Arsenal win in Seville -</h2>

In Group B, Arsenal bounced back from losing 2-1 to Lens in France in their last game as they beat Sevilla by the same scoreline on a sodden surface at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Gabriel Martinelli ran clear to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time and a fantastic strike by Gabriel Jesus made it two.

Nemanja Gudelj pulled one back for Sevilla but last season's Europa League winners have won just twice in 13 games in this campaign.

"There are not many teams to have won here in the last ten years in Europe and we've done it," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports.

Lens are second, a point behind Arsenal, after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven with Elye Wahi cancelling out Johan Bakayoko's opener.

Last season's beaten finalists Inter Milan are joint top of Group D with seven points after defeating Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 at San Siro.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s second-half penalty won it for Inter after Alexis Sanchez's opener was cancelled out by young Israeli Oscar Gloukh.

Real Sociedad are level with Inter thanks to a 1-0 win over Benfica in Lisbon secured by a Brais Mendez goal.

Benfica are still without a point and staring at an early exit.

Following that incident, Macron was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convey France's "complete solidarity" with Israel, according to the French presidency.

Israel-Palestine war: France President Macron says, 'Terrorism a common enemy for Israel & France'

French President Emmanuel Macron, on Tuesday (Oct 24), called for the international coalition fighting against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria to be widened in order to combat the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza after it launched an unprecedented attack on Israel.

While speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Macron said the countries fighting the Islamic State "should also fight against Hamas."

"We should build a regional and international coalition to battle against terrorist groups that threaten us all," he said while addressing a joint news conference.

He also highlighted that France and Israel shared terrorism as their "common enemy".

"France is ready for the international coalition against Daesh in which we are taking part for operations in Iraq and Syria to also fight against Hamas," he told reporters, referring to Islamic State.

Macron warned against the potential risks of regional violence while also stating that the battle against Hamas "must be without mercy but not without rules".

Though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not directly comment on Macron's proposal but said the fight was a battle between the "axis of evil" and "the free world".

"This battle is not merely our own ... it's everybody's battle," he said.

An Elysee Palace source said Macron's proposal "draws inspiration from the experience of the Global Coalition against Daesh and seeing what aspects can be replicated against Hamas".

<h2>Freeing hostages&nbsp;a priority,&nbsp;says Macron</h2>

Macron, who met the families of French victims at Tel Aviv airport, said freeing nine French hostages was a priority.

"The first objective we should have today is the release of all hostages, without any distinction, because this is an awful crime to play with the lives of children, adults, old people, civilians and soldiers," Macron said after meeting Israel's President Isaac Herzog.&nbsp;

He added that the battle must be fought without "enlarging this conflict."

Macron's visit was aimed at preventing an escalation of the war, freeing hostages, guaranteeing Israel's security and working towards a two-state solution, said the presidential advisers. He will push for a humanitarian ceasefire, they added.

His official visit to Jerusalem comes after the European Union foreign ministers struggled to agree on a call for a "humanitarian pause" in the war on Monday (Oct 23).&nbsp;

The French government is talking to Saudi Arabia about selling the kingdom Rafale fighter jets, France's defence minister said on Monday.

Sebastien Lecornu told reporters there were "discussions" between Rafale maker Dassault Aviation and Saudi Arabia about a potential sale but gave no details.

Weekly La Tribune Dimanche reported that Saudi Arabia -- whose airforce is mostly equipped with American F-15s and Eurofighters built by Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain -- had asked Dassault for a cost estimate for 54 Rafales by November 10.

The Rafale, a twin-engine multirole fighter aircraft, is a bestseller for the French arms industry, and helped push French weapons exports to a record high last year.

France, the world's third-biggest arms exporting nation after the United States and Russia, sold 80 of the fighters to the United Arab Emirates for an estimated 16 billion euros ($17 billion) in 2022.

Indonesia, Greece, India, Qatar and Egypt are also Rafale customers.

France has sold more than half its Rafale production to date abroad.

NGOs often criticise France for delivering arms to what they say are authoritarian regimes.

But the defence ministry said in a report last year that France always respected its "international commitments" and weapons exports were subject to "very strict rules" and export controls.

Saudi Arabia, already a major buyer of French weapons, is regularly accused of human rights violations which NGOs and others say include mass executions and the targeting of individuals exercising their right of freedom of expression and association.&nbsp;

France says talking to Saudi about Rafale fighter sale

A Paris judge on Monday (Oct 23) charged two men suspected of having links with the Islamist gunman who killed two Swedish football fans in Brussels last week, reported AFP.

The men were charged with forming a terror group and getting involved in murder linked to a terror plot. France's anti-terror prosecutor's office said that both men were placed in detention.

The two men were amongst four people arrested by French authorities over the last week following a deadly attack in Brussels. All of them were suspected of having links with Abdesalem Lassoued, the terrorist behind the killing of two fans just before the start of a Belgium-Sweden international football match.

Out of those four, two were released without charges.

French prosecutors said they opened a formal investigation into a suspected "criminal terrorist conspiracy" after receiving information on the case from the Belgian judiciary.

<h2>About Abdesalem Lassoued</h2>

BBC reported that Abdesalem Lassoued had earlier escaped from prison in Tunisia and sought refuge in Europe.

He had been sentenced to 26 years in prison in 2005 for crimes including attempted murder. In 2011, he is believed to have escaped prison and arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

He applied for asylum in Belgium. His application was rejected and since then, authorities around Europe have failed to keep track.

The Tunisian authorities had asked Belgium to return Lassoued home in August 2022. Belgian officials received the extradition request but failed to process it.

The man was eventually shot dead by French police Tuesday morning (Oct 17) after he killed two fans.

Four years after a devastating fire destroyed much of Notre Dame, Paris's Louvre Museum is holding an unprecedented exhibition of the treasures of the famed 12th-century cathedral.

<h2>The Treasures of Notre Dame</h2>

As restoration efforts for the Notre Dame de Paris near&nbsp;their final stages, the Musée du Louvre is hosting a remarkable exhibition dedicated to the treasures of the cathedral.

This treasury encompasses a wide array of religious and sacred objects, vestments used in worship, relics, manuscript books, and various precious artefacts.

According to the Louvre museum's website, after the exhibition, the priceless treasures will return to the cathedral's neo-Gothic sacristy, which was originally designed by the architects Jean Baptiste Lassus and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc between 1845 and 1850.

Following the fire, the sacristy — a place for sacred objects has been meticulously renovated in anticipation of the cathedral's grand reopening in 2024.

The exhibition, which includes over 120 selected works, "provides a condensed history of the treasury".&nbsp;

It will be up till 29 January 2024. These exhibits provide a unique opportunity to understand the treasury's rich heritage, tracing its origins back to the Middle Ages and its remarkable revival in the 19th century.

<h2>Notre Dame fire</h2>

In 2019, the cathedral's iconic spire burned and fell to the ground right in front of thousands of Parisians who could only watch as the beloved French landmark was destroyed.

The iconic cathedral had survived years of wars and revolutions, and understandably not just in Paris but people all over the world were dismayed at the huge loss.

However, Parisians will soon once again roam the halls of the iconic building. As per a statement by the French culture minister from earlier this year, Notre Dame's restoration is on track to be completed by the end of next year.

The authorities have previously given December 8 – the Feast of the Immaculate Conception – as a likely deadline.&nbsp;

Six airports across France were evacuated, on Wednesday (Oct 18), after the authorities received an email of "threats of attack", news agency AFP cited a police source as saying.&nbsp;

This is the latest threat in a spate of such incidents reported in the country.

The evacuations at Lille, Lyon, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse and Beauvais airports near the French capital Paris would allow authorities to "clear up any doubts" if the threats were real, the source said.

As per AFP reports, France's DGAC aviation authority spokesman also confirmed the evacuations made over the bomb threats at Lille, Lyon, Toulouse and Beauvais but did not give any further details immediately.

The DGAC's online dashboard displayed noteworthy delays at Lille, Lyon and Toulouse airports respectively.

Nice Airport also took to its official X account and shared a post saying that after "an abandoned baggage item... a security perimeter was set up to allow the usual checks. The situation has now returned to normal".

Six airports across France were evacuated, on Wednesday (Oct 18), after the authorities received an email of "threats of attack", news agency AFP cited a police source as saying. Following an abandoned baggage item in terminal 1, a security perimeter was set up to allow the usual checks to be carried out. Six airports evacuated in France after 'threats of attack'

In northern France, researchers are analysing mysterious markings on a Bronze Age rock as they hope to find some hidden ancient sites. The rock is now being hailed as a "treasure map" and has been unstudied for 4,000 years.&nbsp;

Bronze Age rock is known as the Saint-Bélec slab. In 1990, when local archaeologists were digging at a prehistoric site in Finistère, France, the slab was discovered. However, it disappeared for over a century, to be later found in 2014.&nbsp;

Researchers in 2021 called it the oldest map of Europe as they probed its origin and the etchings. The finding will help them understand the date of the slab, which will be the catalyst to rediscover lost monuments.&nbsp;

As quoted by news agency AFP, Yvan Pailler, a professor at the University of Western Brittany (UBO), said: "Using the map to try to find archaeological sites is a great approach. We never work like that."&nbsp;

Sophisticated radar equipment and aerial photography are used to locate ancient sites, but sometimes they are uncovered by accident in cities when the foundations for new buildings are being dug.&nbsp;

Pailler's colleague, Clement Nicolas from the CNRS research institute, said the team has just begun its journey and they would need to survey the entire territory and cross-reference the markings on the slab.&nbsp;

<h2>'Treasure map'</h2>

The ancient map marks an area roughly 30 by 21 kilometres. Pailler said that it's a "treasure map" and the job could take 15 years.&nbsp;

Notably, Nicolas and Pailler, both were part of the team that rediscovered the slab in 2014. They were also joined by colleagues from other institutions in France and overseas so that they could decode its mysteries.&nbsp;

Pailler said that "there were a few engraved symbols that made sense right away", but in 1900 a local historian did not understand its significance when it was first uncovered.&nbsp;

In the coarse bumps and lines of the slab, they could see the rivers and mountains of Roudouallec, part of the Brittany region about 500 kilometres west of Paris. The researchers scanned the slab and compared it with current maps, finding a roughly 80 per cent match.&nbsp;

The rock has tiny hollows, which researchers believe could point to burial mounds, dwellings or geological deposits.&nbsp;

It is believed that discovering their meaning could lead to a whole flood of new finds.&nbsp;

This Bronze Age slab is a 'treasure map' to hunt ancient sites in France

Twenty-year-old Mohammed Moguchkov, who killed a school teacher in France last Friday, said that he was acting for the Islamic State (IS), the news agency AFP reported on Tuesday (Oct 17) citing a source. The source said that Moguchkov also made a "very marginal" reference to the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel in the video before stabbing 57-year-old Dominique Bernard of the Lycee Gambetta High School in Arras.&nbsp;

Moguchkov, a former student of the school, made these claims in a video recorded before the attack. He was due to appear before an investigating magistrate later in the day to be charged.

He was already on a French national register as a potential security threat and under surveillance by France's domestic intelligence agency, the DGSI. His father, who was also on the list, was deported in 2018.

<h2>France again raises security following attack</h2>

Moguchkov is from the northern Caucasus region. As per the AFP report, French President Emmanuel Macron told Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin to focus especially on young men between the ages of 16 and 25 from the Caucasus. Macron will attend the funeral of Bernard on Thursday.

France again raised its security level after Friday's attack, deploying 7,000 troops. A day back, the Lycee Gambetta High School was evacuated over a bomb threat which proved to be a false alarm.

While there were no classes scheduled on Monday the school's doors were open for students and staff to pay tribute to the teacher.&nbsp;

Also on Tuesday, the Palace of Versailles -- one of the country's most recognisable historic landmarks -- was also evacuated after a bomb threat, according to a post from its account on X.

French teacher stabbing: Killer claims attack for Islamic State

France international Jean-Clair Todibo on Monday (Oct 16) apologised for laughing during a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the Israel-Hamas conflict and a murdered French teacher before a Euro 2024 qualifier last week.

"I had a nervous laugh in relation to this minute of silence but in no case did I make fun of the current situation," the 23-year-old Nice defender told journalists.

Cameras caught Todibo laughing during the tribute, which took before France's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam last week, to the victims of the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The minute's silence also remembered a teacher killed last week in the northern French city of Arras in what the government called an Islamist terror attack.

Todibo, who is in the France team for Tuesday's friendly match against Scotland in Lille, said he had never intended to offend.

"I wanted to express myself today in relation to the extent of the situation and the interpretation of the situation which is quite crazy," he said before France's press conference in Lille.

"The context was unusual, we were among rival fans who had made certain jokes and I had this nervous laugh that came out. I wanted to apologise to all the people who I could have offended, that's the least I can do. Let there be no mistake about that."

"I'm hurt because it taints the education that my mother gave me," he continued.&nbsp;

"Some said that I laughed during this minute of silence because I was making fun of the death of a teacher, you should know that my mother has worked in National Education for 20 years and I have enormous respect for these people.

"This could have happened to my mother. It bothers me because it reflects an image which is not mine.

"I think I'm a boy with a very good education and with respect for people."

Before Todibo's apology, the national ethics council of the French Football Federation had sent a letter to the player to ask him to explain himself, reserving the right to refer the matter to the FFF disciplinary committee.

French footballer apologises for nervous laugh during minute's silence for Israel-Hamas conflict victims

The Lycee Gambetta High School in Arras, where a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/france-teacher-killed-in-knife-attack-at-french-school-say-police-646335">French teacher was fatally stabbed last week</a>, was evacuated on Monday (Oct 16) following a bomb alert, the news agency Reuters reported. While there were no classes scheduled on Monday the school's doors were open for students and staff to pay tribute to teacher Dominique Bernard, who was killed by a 20-year-old man, a former student.

The suspect, identified by prosecutors as Mohamed M, was arrested. One of the attackers' brothers was also detained nearby. The attacker was on a state watchlist of people known as a potential security risk, a police source told the news agency.&nbsp;

Reuters reported on Monday that following the bomb alert, teachers and students left the building as they had come to pay tributes to Bernard. As a police bomb squad arrived, teachers and students gathered in the courtyard of a building opposite their school as civil protection personnel comforted them.

Tributes were also paid to the teacher on Sunday and people could be seen laying down roses at the school. "The educational community must be united, so it was important to be there. A large part of our school will be there today to pay tribute to a colleague," Celine Cailleret, a teacher for students with learning difficulties, told the news agency.&nbsp;

"We will be strong, united, to continue to transmit beautiful values to our students," Cailleret added.

The French government placed the country on its highest state of alert. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the killing as "barbaric Islamic terrorism." On Monday, President Macron shared a message on X to students and teachers by saying, "If I'm speaking to you, it is to assure you all that we stand with you."

"We will always counter blind hatred with the inextinguishable thirst to teach. The thirst to learn. The thirst to live freely," he added.

According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the Arras attack bore a link to events in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military offensive to root out Hamas fighters after their deadly attack on October 7.
