Argentina captain Lionel Messi on Tuesday scored his 100th international goal for the reigning world champions as they romped to a 7-0 friendly win over outclassed Curacao.

Seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi opened the scoring against the Caribbean island minnows on 20 minutes in Santiago del Estero.

It came 17 years after he opened his Argentina account in a 3-2 defeat to Croatia in March 2006.

The 35-year-old soon added another just after the half-hour mark to make it 3-0, and then completed his hat-trick on 37 minutes with the fifth as Argentina toyed with their overmatched opponents.

It was his seventh hat-trick for the national team.

"You cannot describe Messi in words," said fellow goalscorer Nicolas Gonzalez.

"He's the best in the world and he shows it match after match, day after day. Every time he touches the ball, he makes you smile."

Messi came into the game not just as his country's all-time record goalscorer, but with more goals than the next two top marksmen -- Gabriel Batistuta on 56 and Sergio Aguero with 41 -- put together.

This was Argentina's second match since winning the World Cup in dramatic style against France in Qatar in December -- triumphing 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw -- and it was always going to be about Messi reaching 100 goals.

Now with 102, he remains third in the all-time list, behind great rival Cristiano Ronaldo (122) of Portugal and Iran's Ali Daei (109).

<h2>'Straight to the museum'</h2>

Messi had come up short on Thursday last week when he notched his 99th goal for the Albiceleste as Argentina toiled in their homecoming celebration match against Panama.

The Central Americans had held out until the 78th minute before 21-year-old MLS sensation Thiago Almada broke their resistence.

Messi then scored direct from a free-kick a minute from time -- his 800th goal in professional football -- in front of 83,000 delirious fans in Buenos Aires.

Curacao, ranked 86th by world governing body FIFA, could only hold out for 20 minutes before Messi took a pass from Giovanni Lo Ceslo, cut inside his marker onto his weaker right foot and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

The referee was then seen on live television throwing the ball to someone on the side of the pitch as DirecTV commentators speculated that it was heading "straight to the museum."&nbsp;

Three minutes later Gonzalez outjumped goalkeeper Eloy Room to head home from four yards.

Gonzalez turned provider as Messi scored the first of three goals in four minutes, this time with his left foot.

He then laid off the ball for Enzo Fernandez to make it four with a shot from distance before Lo Celso released Messi behind the defense to notch his treble.

Argentina took their foot off the gas in the second half, with only a generously-awarded Angel Di Maria penalty and close-range finish from Gonzalo Montiel adding to the score.

But the 42,000 fans present remained in party mood throughout, waiting for their heroes to lift the World Cup trophy in front of them.

Kylian&nbsp;Mbappe&nbsp;has succeeded the retired Hugo Lloris as France captain, a source close to the team told AFP on Monday.

Paris Saint-Germain forward&nbsp;Mbappe, 24, accepted the proposal after discussions with coach Didier Deschamps earlier in the day.

Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris brought an end to his international career in January after losing the World Cup final a month earlier.

Lloris, 36, had been skipper for more than a decade.

Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain after Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane also hung up his boots following the defeat to Argentina in December.

Mbappe, who has played 66 times for his country, had been heavily linked with the role for weeks and scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final loss after helping Les Bleus to the title in 2018.

The former Monaco attacker is vice-captain at PSG behind Brazil's Marquinhos and led the side in the defender's absence during Sunday's loss to Rennes.

His first game as captain will be Friday's Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands at the Stade de France.

Euro 2024 qualifiers: Everything you need to know

Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;set up a FA Cup semi-final against Brighton in remarkable fashion as Fulham captain Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off for pushing the referee in a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Mitrovic was shown one of three Fulham red cards in a matter of seconds as he barged into Chris Kavanagh for awarding&nbsp;United&nbsp;a penalty after a VAR review for Willian's handball on the line.

The Brazilian was also dismissed, along with Fulham manager Marco Silva on the touchline.

United&nbsp;took advantage as two goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer's first for the club kept Erik ten Hag's men on course for a treble of cup competitions.

"Mitro should control his emotions a bit," said Silva. "If he wants to give me the red card I have to accept it because he didn’t listen to me at all. As I left my area I have to accept it."

Fulham's fury was partly born out of a penalty appeal for a foul on Mitrovic in the first half that VAR did not intervene to award.

"It is a shame the ref wasn’t shown VAR for the first-half moments," added Silva. "It is difficult to be Fulham at Old Trafford, the VAR feels the pressure too."&nbsp;

The Cottagers had been on course to reach the last four for the first time in 21 years when Mitrovic fired them ahead early in the second half.

United&nbsp;needed goalkeeper David de Gea to make a remarkable save to deny the Serbian a second before the tie completely turned on one incident 18 minutes from time.

Willian used his hand to deflect Jadon Sancho's shot behind, preventing a certain goal.

Kavanagh initially only gave a corner, but reversed his decision on seeing the replay to spark chaotic scenes.

Silva was first to be shown red for approaching the official near the VAR monitor.

Willian was then dismissed, but it is Mitrovic who faces the most severe ban after pushing the referee on the arm and then squaring up to Kavanagh.

Fernandes coolly sent Bernd Leno the wrong way from the penalty spot to level.

United&nbsp;quickly made the most of the two-man advantage as Luke Shaw crossed for Sabitzer to flick home.

Fernandes inflicted the final blow as he blasted home in the sixth minute of added time to take&nbsp;United&nbsp;to Wembley on April 23.

"This team has great character," said Ten Hag after his side shrugged off the fatigue of playing away to Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday.&nbsp;

"We are mentally and physically fit, and I’m happy with our progress as a team."

<h2>Brighton too good for Grimsby</h2>

Earlier, Brighton dashed League Two Grimsby's dreams of a trip to Wembley with a 5-0 thrashing.

Fourth-tier Grimsby had made history on their way to the quarter-finals by beating five sides from higher divisions.

But Paul Hirst's men were caught out by the class of in-form Brighton, who are eyeing the club's first ever major trophy.

The floodgates threatened to open when Deniz Undav scored for the Seagulls after just six minutes.

Grimsby held out to limit the damage before half-time, but ran out of steam in the second half.

Evan Ferguson scored twice and had another strike ruled out by VAR check for offside.

Brighton's free-scoring wingers Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma then rubbed salt into Grimsby wounds by scoring in the final 10 minutes.

<h2>Doyle stunner sets up City clash</h2>

Sheffield&nbsp;United&nbsp;will face&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;City in the other semi-final after a City loanee Tommy Doyle scored a stunning stoppage time winner to beat Blackburn 3-2.

Blackburn twice led at Bramall Lane through&nbsp;Ben Brereton Diaz's penalty and Sam Szmodics.

Sam Gallagher's own goal quickly levelled in the first half and Oli McBurnie equalised nine minutes from time before Doyle smashed home a long range effort into the top corner.

City booked their place in the semi-finals on Saturday as Erling Haaland scored his sixth hat-trick of the season in a 6-0 thrashing of Championship leaders Burnley 6-0.

Manchester United reach FA Cup semi-finals after chaotic 3-1 victory over Fulham

A number of women who were not top-tier football players in Afghanistan, as it was claimed, were evacuated to England along with genuine players, reported BBC. The high-profile evacuation took place in November 2021 from Pakistan to England. Women footballers were seen to be at risk after Taliban's rise to power and their strict interpretation of Islam prompting them to oppose women's participation in sports.

In November 2021, Thirty-five women and their family members (130 people in all) were flown to England. They&nbsp;were granted UK visas by the country's Home Office.

A BBC report now says that though names and other details of the evacuees were genuine, it was found that their claims of being part of national or regional football teams in Afghanistan were, in some cases, false. After speaking to former Afghan players, coaches and others related to the sport, it was found that 13 of those evacuated were identified as not being part of the teams that were listed.

"I have seen people in the list who have not even worn a football strip in Herat," said Najibullah Nowroozi, former coach of Herat Youth Team. Herat is a province in Afghanistan.

Some genuine players have been left back in Afghanistan, says the report.

"The Taliban have banned sports for women and girls... we are left behind in Afghanistan with no future. It just makes me feel very neglected and very sad because we are the real players and not some of those that got evacuated," BBC quotes one of such individuals who, it said wished to remain anonymous.

'False' footballers evacuated with Afghan women players to UK: Report

On Wednesday (March 15), violent clashes erupted&nbsp;between police and Eintracht Frankfurt fans after the Italian authorities announced the ban of German supporters from the stadium due to security concerns. It is to be noted that violent scenes had taken place&nbsp;between fans in the first leg as well. However, the story remained the same this time around as well following the announcement of the ban of the German fans.

It led to the Frankfurt fans taking on the police in Naples with the supporters throwing objects towards riot police and setting fire to a police car. Here's the shocking video of the horrific incident:

It is to be noted that around 400 ticketless Eintracht Frankfurt supporters reached Naples on Tuesday (March 14) via train, from Salerno, and arrived at a&nbsp;hotel next to the one where their team was placed. This isn't the first time such an incident took place as the situation went out of hands during the first leg as well. Back then,&nbsp;fans of both teams squared off against each other, in Frankfurt, with police having labelled that game as high risk.

In a statement, Frankfurt director Philipp Reschke said: "About 150 Napoli fans came and attacked ours (at Piazza del Gesu). Then it was set in motion. It ended in a relatively long confrontation with a lot of pyrotechnics. It seemed a bit like that was where the groups that were looking for each other found each other. After winning the first leg 2-0, Napoli defeated Frankfurt 3-0 in the second leg&nbsp;with Victor Osimhen striking twice and one goal from Piotr Zielinski.

An&nbsp;Indonesian court on Thursday&nbsp;jailed&nbsp;a&nbsp;policeman&nbsp;but cleared two other officers of negligence&nbsp;over&nbsp;crowd control measures at a local soccer match that led to one of the world's deadliest&nbsp;stadium&nbsp;stampedes. The October 2022 derby in Malang, East Java, between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in chaos with 135 spectators killed, many&nbsp;crushed as they fled for exits after police fired tear gas into the crowd.

Last week, two Arema FC match officials were also&nbsp;jailed&nbsp;for negligence, in the first verdicts&nbsp;over&nbsp;the stampede. One of the policemen, Hasdarmawan, was on Thursday sentenced to one and a half years in prison. Authorities had earlier said Hasdarmawan had ordered police to fire tear gas, which soccer's world governing body FIFA has banned as a crowd control measure.

Two other officers, Bambang Sidik Achmadi and Wahyu Setyo Pranoto were cleared of wrongdoing and freed by the judge. Their lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment. An investigation by&nbsp;Indonesia's human rights commission found the main cause of the stampede was police firing into the crowd 45 rounds of tear gas.

Investigators also said the&nbsp;stadium&nbsp;was filled beyond capacity. Indonesia's top soccer league suspended matches for several months following the incident but most games have since resumed, with some fixtures played behind closed doors due to security concerns. "There is the presumption of innocence until there is proof to the contrary, we and all Moroccans are backing him," Regragui told a press conference in Rabat.

"He is unfazed and that's important," he said. "We are all behind him and it would do him good to return to Morocco and feel that everyone supports him."&nbsp;

The match against Brazil will be held on March 25 in Tangiers while the game against Peru is due for March 28 in Madrid.

"He is someone who is strong on and off the field," Regragui said, adding that he had spoken to Hakimi after the rape allegations surfaced.

Cristiano Ronaldo-starrer Al-Nassr lost, 0-1, to Al-Ittihad&nbsp;in the top-of-the-table clash in the Saudi Professional League match, held at&nbsp;the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.&nbsp;With the defeat, Al-Nassr's four-match-winning streak came to an end. They also got replaced by Al-Ittihad from the top spot with the loss on their home ground. After the match, Ronaldo -- who has been in top form for the Riyadh-based club -- was evidently frustrated before the rival fans irked him further.

After Al-Nassr players were making their way out of the ground, following the loss, Ronaldo was seen visibly frustrated with the result and in anger. To make matters worse, Al-Ittihad fans mocked him further with 'Messi, Messi' chants. Soon after, the Portugal star kicked a bottle in anger following his side's loss and the rival fans mocking him. Canada Soccer say their pay proposals for their men's and women's national teams will ensure equality and make the women's team the second-best paid in the world. The governing body, which faced a strike threat from their women's team last month, said their plan was awaiting agreement from players unions. The plan features a pooling of prize money from the men's and women's World Cups with the income divided out equally between the two teams.

The statement from Canada Soccer was issued shortly before a hearing to parliament's Heritage Committee where women players will testify. "If accepted by the Player Associations, the collective bargaining agreements will pay both National Teams the same amount for playing a 90-minute match and both National Teams will share equally in competition prize money," the organisation said. "Additionally, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team will become the second-highest paid women’s national team among FIFA’s 211 Member Associations," they added.

Last week the body announced an interim funding agreement for the women's team to cover their run-up to the Women's World Cup which is being held in New Zealand and Australia in July. Canada won gold in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and are among the contenders to challenge defending World Cup champions, the United States.

Canada Soccer said they had agreed to all nine demands made by women's team players last month covering flights, hotels as well as transparency over finances. Former Olympic athlete Charmaine Crooks was named acting president of Canada Soccer after former president Nick Bontis quit after the row with the women's players.

Canada Soccer General Secretary Earl Cochrane said he hoped the players would sign up to the proposals. "The deal in front of our players today is unprecedented in Canadian sport and will make us a leader among FIFA Member Associations," he said. "We have appreciated the conversations with the two Players’ Associations and we believe serious progress has been made. With fresh leadership, now is the time to conclude those discussions and finalize a deal. Together, we can get this done.” added&nbsp;Cochrane.

An Indonesian court on Thursday jailed two football match officials for negligence over one of the worst stadium disasters in the sport's history. The crush in October at a venue in the East Java city of Malang killed 135 people after police fired tear gas into packed stands when supporters invaded the pitch. Hundreds of people fled for narrow exits, resulting in a stampede that left many trampled and suffocated to death, including more than 40 children.

Abdul Haris, the head of the organising committee for the match, was found guilty of negligence and handed 18 months in prison. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of six years and eight months.

"The defendant did not read the situation and played down the possibility of an emergency situation or chaos," presiding judge Abu Achmad Sidqi Amsya told the court in the city of Surabaya.

The verdict is Indonesia's first ruling on the tragedy. Moments later, security official Suko Sutrisno was also found guilty of negligence and sentenced to one year in prison. Prosecutors had also sought six years and eight months in his case.

The judge said Sutrisno "did not anticipate the chaos because there had never been an emergency situation before". He also "did not understand his job as a security official well", the judge added.

Cholifatul Noor, a mother who lost her 15-year-old son in the tragedy, said the sentence was too lenient and was hurtful to families of the victims.

"I am not satisfied with the verdict because this concerned many lives, not just the life of one or two people," she told local channel Metro TV tearfully.

A lawyer representing another family who lost two children told AFP that prosecutors must appeal.

"If they don't it will prove that justice is out of reach for the families," Imam Hidayat said.

Sutrisno's lawyer denied his client did not do his job properly and said he is an expert in his field who had been working in the profession since 2008.

The security official has previously said he did not have the authority to open the doors of the stadium when the crush took place.

Both men, dressed in white shirts in court, have seven days to appeal.

SHOCKING: 21-year-old Ivory Coast football player Moustapha Sylla collapses, dies during match - Watch

It was a horror outing for Erik Ten Hag-led Manchester United as they were hammered 7-0 by hosts Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (March 05). With a massive win, Liverpool strengthened their top-four chances in the 2022/23 Premier League season.&nbsp;Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah struck twice whereas Roberto Firmino also scored once as the Red Devils had no answers and were left clueless versus the hosts in front of a jam-packed stadium.&nbsp;

While Salah, Gakpo and Nunez scored twice each, it was the Egyptian who made heads turn. Not only did the 30-year-old&nbsp;become the Merseyside club’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 129 goals, he also toyed with Man United's&nbsp;Lisandro Martinez. Here's the video of Salah outfoxing Martinez with his skills during Liverpool's big win over the Old Trafford club:

Salah’s skill left the Argentine clueless as the defender slipped and slided on the turf and failed to keep up with the former's rapid movement with the ball. Salah eventually passed the ball to Nunez as Jurgen Klopp's men scored the third goal.&nbsp;

After the match, Klopp said, "It was one of the best performances for a long, long time. Everybody saw what the boys can be. The second half couldn't start better. From that moment on we were flying and it was really difficult to play against us."

Erik Ten Hag, on the other hand, was left fuming and stated, "The result is quite obvious. It is unprofessional. There are many things which make me angry. To concede so easy the goals is definitely one."

After this win, Liverpool remain below fourth-positioned Tottenham Hotspur, by three points, whereas Man United is at the third spot with 49 points.

A tenacious Barcelona frustrated&nbsp;Real&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;to secure a 1-0 win over their bitter rivals in an ill-tempered Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Thursday. The visitors defended superbly after&nbsp;Real&nbsp;centre back Eder Militao scored an own goal in the first half, managing to overcome the loss of key players like Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele who missed the game due to injuries.

Barca earned a much-needed win after arriving in the Spanish capital under pressure having been knocked out of the Europa League and losing at lowly Almeria to halt a seven-game winning streak in LaLiga. "We would have liked to have the ball more, to control de game a little more but we fought hard and competed in a high level. They had the ball but didn’t create many chances. We got the advantage for the second leg and that’s&nbsp;really important," Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets told TVE.

Real&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;started better and dominated the first 15 minutes, but Barcelona started to turn things around as they took control the midfield and their defensive game plan worked brilliantly. Barca centre back Ronald Araujo did a great job at right back to neutralise the threat of the dangerous Vinicius Jr. and Karim Benzema was left alone up front.

Real&nbsp;became frustrated and tempers flared before the hosts made the crucial mistake which gave Barca the winner. Madrid&nbsp;midfielder Eduardo Camavinga gifted a back pass to Ferran Torres who reacted quickly to slide the ball to Franck Kessie.

His point-blank strike was saved but bounced off Militao and into the net. The assistant referee signalled offside but the VAR replay showed Kessie was fractionally onside and the goal stood.

Barcelona locked&nbsp;Real&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;into an even tighter situation during the second half and although the hosts dominated possession, they rarely threatened to equalise.

Real&nbsp;did not record a single shot on target despite having almost 70% of possession in the second half and Barca should have extended their lead in the 71st minute when a Kessie shot that beat the goalkeeper was blocked by Ansu Fati.

Substitute Rodrygo had&nbsp;Real’s best chance with a late long-range strike that flew narrowly wide of the post. The teams meet again in Barcelona on April 5 with the winners to face Athletic Bilbao or Osasuna in the final.

Copa del Rey: Barcelona earn gutsy 1-0 win vs Real Madrid in semi-final first leg

The Premier League will have a big weekend on offer as the credentials of the teams chasing top four spots will be tested as Liverpool host Manchester United while Spurs will be playing against Wolves away.

However, the weekend will start with Newcastle United paying a visit to the Etihad Stadium as they take on title-challenging Manchester City. Spurs, who is currently sitting in the pole position will look to make sure they consolidate as both their nearest opponents face a tough challenge.

<h3>Liverpool face stern United challenge</h3>

While Jurgen Klopp and his men will look for a win against Manchester United, the Reds will have to be optimistic about their chances as Erik Ten Hag and his side are in a rich vein of form. Manchester United&nbsp;have lost only one match in the PL in 2023 -&nbsp;a defeat to Arsenal, and will now look to put a spanner in the work for their arch-rivals.

However, if both Spurs and Newcastle fail to win their away games, the United game will come in as a bonus considering the ramifications on the top four battle. Interestingly, Liverpool&nbsp;have never finished outside the top four in a full Jurgen Klopp season and will look to continue the trend this season as well.

<h3>Spurs face Wolves</h3>

On the other hand, Spurs will look to make it three wins in a row in the PL when they take on Wolves on Saturday and will have the opportunity to open a seven-point gap over Newcastle if the latter fails to win. Spurs faced a horrible FA Cup exit at the hands of second-tier Sheffield United on Wednesday evening and will look to bounce back before they host AC Milan in the Champions League. A failure for Spurs could see them hand over the initiatives to Newcastle and Liverpool as they have games in hand.

<h3>Newcastle face Man City</h3>

Newcastle United have put on a great run in the top four battle and will look to reach Champions League&nbsp;for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Eddie Howe's side will be targeting Europe as they could close the gap on Spurs to just one point if they beat Manchester&nbsp;City. If they do manage to finish in the top four this season, this will be their best season in the top flight since 2012, when they finished fifth under Alan Pardew.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Arsenal will face Bournemouth at home as a crunch battle at either side of the PL table takes place.&nbsp;

Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;fought back to overpower West Ham&nbsp;United&nbsp;3-1 and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals as Premier League Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton suffered shock defeats on Wednesday. Three days after they won the League Cup,&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;trailed to Said Benrahma's 54th-minute goal at Old Trafford but an own goal by West Ham's Nayef Aguerd and late strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and Fred sent the hosts into the last eight.

Manchester&nbsp;manager Erik Ten Hag was delighted with his players. "The resilience from this team and the belief they're going to win it was magnificent," the Dutchman told ITV. West Ham, who have won only once at Old Trafford in their last 22 visits, took advantage of sloppy defending to open the scoring.

Tomas Soucek kept the ball in play on the left touchline and as&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;players appealed for a throw-in, the Czech played the ball to Benrahma who fired a shot past David De Gea into the top corner. United&nbsp;thought they had equalised when Bruno Fernandes found Casemiro with a pin-point free kick, but his headed effort was disallowed for offside.

The game looked set for extra time until Argentine forward Garnacho controlled the ball inside West Ham's penalty area before curling a shot past keeper Alphonse Areola. Brazilian Fred added a third and the 12-times FA Cup winners advanced to a sixth-round home tie against Fulham. "I had a strong feeling that we still could win the game, you saw the belief, there was composure, there was never a moment of panic," Ten Hag said.

Grimsby led 2-0 soon after halftime but Southampton pulled one back through Duje Caleta-Car to ensure a tense finale.

Phil Foden's brace eased Manchester City to a 3-0 victory over second-tier Bristol City as they moved into the FA Cup sixth round but Leicester City's hopes of repeating their 2021 triumph were dashed on Tuesday. Foden struck in the seventh minute but it was not an entirely comfortable night for Pep Guardiola's side until the England forward's deflected effort made it 2-0 late on.

Kevin De Bruyne then gave the scoreline an emphatic look with a sublime finish from 25 metres although it was harsh on Bristol City who had been on a 12-match unbeaten run and pushed the Premier League champions hard. Leicester were booed off after a 2-1 home defeat by second-tier Blackburn Rovers for whom Tyrhys Dolan and Sammie Szmodics were on target before a Kelechi Iheanacho reply.

Fulham reached the sixth round for the first time in 13 years with superb goals by Joao Palhinha and Manor Solomon earning them a 2-0 win over fellow top-flight side Leeds United. Brighton and Hove Albion's hopes of a first ever major trophy remained intact as Evan Ferguson's first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win over second-tier Stoke City. Guardiola named a strong side, as he invariably does in domestic cup competitions, and City began the game in dynamic style with Kalvin Phillips hitting the crossbar. City did not have to wait long to take the lead though with Foden firing high into the roof of the net from Riyad Mahrez's pass across the face of goal.

The hosts did not buckle though and had a good shout for a penalty declined when Mark Sykes went down under a challenge from Rico Lewis in the area while Alex Scott forced a decent save from City keeper Stefan Ortega. Bristol City, who were spared having to deal with rested Erling Haaland, were still very much in the game until De Bruyne split their defence with a ball to Nathan Ake whose pass eventually fell to Foden whose shot deflected into the net off of Zak Vyner.

"It was really tough. Bristol showed us how good they can be. I was impressed by some players, I didn't know them. The second half was much better," Guardiola said. Promotion-chasing Blackburn thoroughly deserved their win at Leicester whose form remains wildly unpredictable. "It's just consistency and mentality and ambition to succeed. That's been too up and down for us," Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said. "I'm really disappointed for the supporters. It's been a real challenge for them this season. The FA Cup was an opportunity to get to a quarter-final, against a Championship team at home, but they were a lot better than us, and we have to be worried about that."

Fulham's magnificent season continues under Marco Silva with the Cottagers still chasing a European qualification spot on two fronts. They were not at their best against Leeds who had a host of chances and a goal disallowed but still showed their quality. Palhinha struck a superb curled effort after winning the ball after 21 minutes and Israeli Solomon's 56th-minute goal was almost as impressive.

"It is great for us to go to the quarter-final," Silva, whose side are sixth in the Premier League, said. "We know our story with the FA Cup is not great and we are here to try and change it." The remaining four fifth-round ties are on Wednesday with League Cup winners Manchester United at home to West Ham United.

Under-fire Chelsea manager Graham Potter has received emails threatening him and his family. Potter revealed on Friday he has been targeted by an anonymous account after Chelsea's dismal season hit a new low with a 1-0 home defeat against Southampton last weekend.

Chelsea are languishing in 10th place and have won only two of their last 14 matches. Supporters called for Potter to be sacked throughout the Southampton debacle, with personal attacks towards him on social media also increasing.

But worryingly for Potter, threats are now being sent directly to the former Brighton boss, who succeeded the sacked Thomas Tuchel in September.

"You could ask my family how life has been for me and for them. It's been not pleasant at all. I understand supporters go home and they're annoyed because the team aren't winning," Potter said.

"I've had some not particularly nice emails come through, that want me to die and want my kids to die.&nbsp;

"That's obviously not pleasant to receive. If you've been asked for four months if you're under pressure, because (the media) need to sell stuff - what do you expect, in the end?

"You know there's a problem when the email address it's been sent from is 'Potter bastard at Gmail dot com'."

Despite the abuse, Potter is trying to remain positive ahead of the London derby at Tottenham on Sunday.

"I want to succeed here. There's nonsense (being said) that I don't care. Where does that come from? Where's your evidence on that? Ask my family. People have a perception I don't care - what's that based on? How do you know?" he said.

"If you go to work and somebody's swearing abuse at you, it's not going to be pleasant.&nbsp;

"You can answer it two ways. I could say I don't care, but you know I'm lying. Everyone cares what people think, because we're hardwired to be socially connected."

Not pleasant at all: Chelsea manager Graham Potter on receiving threatening emails

Erik ten Hag described Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Barcelona on Thursday night as the biggest of his tenure and said that if his team can beat the five-times European champions they can beat any side.

Are the glory days back at Manchester United?

Ministers have announced plans for an independent&nbsp;football&nbsp;regulator to oversee the financial sustainability of the men's game in England, with powers to prevent clubs from joining breakaway leagues. The regulator would license clubs, requiring them to demonstrate sound financial business models, run robust owners' and directors' tests and give fans a greater say in the running of clubs.

It would also have the power to block clubs from joining breakaway leagues, appearing to prevent a repeat of any attempt to form a Super League such as the one that proved so unpopular with supporters in 2021.

"Despite the success of the sport both at home and abroad, we know that there are real challenges which threaten the stability of clubs both big and small," said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

"These bold new plans will put fans back at the heart of&nbsp;football, protect the rich heritage and traditions of our much-loved clubs and safeguard the beautiful game for future generations."

Football&nbsp;Association CEO Mark Bullingham said the FA welcomed the plans, set out in a government white paper -- a policy document setting out proposals for future legislation -- to be published on Thursday.

"Our response will highlight a critical point made repeatedly by the fan-led review, which recommended that the professional game increases funding of the grassroots game," he said.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Supporters' Association also welcomed the proposals.

"The&nbsp;football&nbsp;governance white paper clearly addresses our key concerns around ownership, rogue competitions and sustainability and of course we support any proposals that offer fans a greater voice in the running of their clubs," said FSA chief executive Kevin Miles.

But the Premier League warned it was vital that regulation did not damage the game.

"We will now work constructively with stakeholders to ensure that the proposed government regulator does not lead to any unintended consequences that could affect the Premier League's position as the most-watched&nbsp;football&nbsp;league in the world, reduce its competitiveness or put the unrivalled levels of funding we provide at risk," it said in a statement.

<h2>Terrible idea</h2>

West Ham owner David Sullivan echoed previous concerns expressed by some owners of Premier League clubs, describing the plans for greater regulation as a "terrible idea".

"The regulator will have a huge staff that&nbsp;football&nbsp;will have to pay for," he told Sky Sports News. "It will be a total waste of money. I bet it grows in size and cost every year.&nbsp;

"The Premier League is the best run and most successful league in the world. It gives more to the lower leagues and the PFA (Professional Footballers' Association) and the grassroots than any other top league in the world. It's a fantastic export."

The proposals are based on the recommendations of a fan-led review that ministers commissioned earlier than originally planned in the immediate aftermath of the Super League scandal.

The body's main purpose would be to oversee a licensing system to ensure clubs are run sustainably, following the collapse of Bury and Macclesfield in recent years.

But it would also be able to step in and force arbitration if the Premier League, the EFL (English&nbsp;Football&nbsp;League) and the&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Association are unable to reach a new settlement on how top-flight finances support the game at lower levels.

The government also plans to introduce a new owners' and directors' test, with a focus on the fitness and propriety of new owners and enhanced due diligence.

It is not clear whether there will be any human rights element to the test, despite calls for one from Amnesty International during the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle.

The issue is again in the spotlight as a result of a Qatari bid for Manchester United.

The government said it would embark on further consultation, with plans to bring forward legislation to be announced as soon as parliamentary time allows.

Former Chelsea player Timo Werner has slammed ex-boss Thomas Tuchel for forgetting his achievements and putting a striker like Lukaku in front of him when he was in form.&nbsp;

“When you come from the kind of success I had in Germany or with Chelsea — playing nearly every game in the first season, winning the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, making a lot of goals," Werner told The Sun.&nbsp;

“Then all this gets a little bit forgotten by the manager, it was not really fair. That was also a reason I had to move back to Leipzig, to get the enjoyment again," added Werner.&nbsp;

Werner, who now plies his trade for Bundesliga club&nbsp;RB Leipzig said parachuting a player like Lukaku in front of him in the attack was one of the toughest moments of his Chelsea career.&nbsp;

"The biggest problem was he put a striker like Lukaku in front of me in the second season after I won the Champions League by nearly playing every game in the first squad."

“That was the toughest moment for me to get a player, a very good player, in front of me for 120 million euros. Romelu was a big striker and had to play after costing so much and I didn’t feel honoured enough."

Timo Werner slams ex-boss Thomas Tuchel for playing Lukaku in front of him

Barcelona and&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie on Thursday, while Juventus were left frustrated by Nantes in a 1-1 stalemate. The game at the Camp Nou brought together two European giants who met in two Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011, and who are both in excellent form domestically. After a goalless first half, La Liga leaders Barcelona went ahead five minutes into the second half thanks to a Marcos Alonso header at a corner.

However,&nbsp;United&nbsp;drew level just three minutes later when Marcus Rashford beat Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his near post to score a 13th goal in 15 games since the World Cup. The Premier League side then took the lead just before the hour mark through a Jules Kounde own goal, but a Raphinha cross flew in inside the final quarter of an hour to secure a draw for Barca before a crowd of more than 90,000.

"I think it was a great game. Two attacking teams, I think it was a Champions League game, even more than that,"&nbsp;United&nbsp;boss Erik ten Hag told broadcaster BT Sport. "We have to finish it in Old Trafford." Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez was left complaining that his side should have had a penalty for a handball by Fred. "It's a stolen penalty," said Xavi. "I don't know why they don't whistle for penalties for handball now. It seems incredible to me. Incredible."

Winning the Europa League may represent the best chance for Juventus to return to the Champions League next season after they were handed a 15-point deduction in Serie A. That punishment, for what the Italian Football Federation ruled was illicit transfer activity designed to artificially boost their accounts, has left the Turin giants 12 points adrift of the top four at home.

Against Nantes they looked on course for a comfortable win when Federico Chiesa nodded a ball across the face of goal for Dusan Vlahovic to open the scoring early on. But French Cup holders Nantes equalised on the breakaway on the hour when Ludovic Blas ran through to finish emphatically. A Chiesa shot then hit the underside of the bar and bounced down without quite all of the ball crossing the line, before it struck the post and rebounded away.

Nantes also survived a VAR penalty check for a handball deep in injury time, the referee instead giving them a free-kick and leaving Juventus with work to do in the return.

Elsewhere, Monaco came from behind to&nbsp;triumph 3-2 away against Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen, with Axel Disasi scoring the winner in the 92nd minute. An own goal by Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had put Monaco ahead early on only for second-half goals by Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz to turn the game around. However, Krepin Diatta pulled the principality team back level before France defender Disasi's strike.

Shakhtar Donetsk were 2-1 winners against Rennes as the Ukrainian club played their first European game since selling star winger Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea. Playing in the Polish capital Warsaw, Dmytro Kryskiv put Shakhtar ahead and Artem Bondarenko netted a penalty before Karl Toko-Ekambi pulled one back for Rennes.

Jose Mourinho's Roma went down 1-0 away to Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg with Argentine midfielder Nicolas Capaldo scoring a late winner. Sevilla, the competition's most successful club, beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in Spain as Youssef En-Nesyri, Lucas Ocampos and Nemanja Gudelj all netted.

Ajax drew 0-0 with Union Berlin, while Sebastian Coates scored deep into stoppage time to earn Sporting a 1-1 draw with Midtjylland of Denmark in Lisbon. The second legs will be played next Thursday with places in the last 16 up for grabs alongside the eight teams who topped their groups. Fiorentina were the biggest winners in the first legs of the Europa Conference League play-offs as they trounced Braga 4-0 in Portugal.

Ciro Immobile gave Lazio a 1-0 victory against CFR Cluj while there were also first-leg wins for Qarabag, Trabzonspor, AEK Larnaca, Partizan Belgrade and Ludogorets.
