Europe, as per a recent report, is increasingly facing bouts of heat so intense that the human body is unable to cope, and subsequently, deaths related to heat have increased by 30 per cent in the last 20 years.

On Monday (Apr 22), the EU's Copernicus climate monitoring service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that extreme heat poses particular health risks to outdoor workers, the elderly, and people with existing conditions like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

In its report, Copernicus and WMO noted that in 2023, heatwaves pushed almost half — 41 per cent — of Southern Europe into strong, very strong or extreme heat stress. This, AFP reports, was the biggest area of Europe under such conditions in any day on record.

North Africa has also been sweltering and the Moroccan meteorological service issued an extreme heat red alert for southern parts of the country.&nbsp;

Some regions of China, including the capital Beijing, are also experiencing sweltering temperatures and a major Chinese power company said its single-day power generation hit a record high on Monday.&nbsp;

Secretary-General Petteri Taalas of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that extreme weather resulting from a warming climate is "unfortunately becoming the new normal".&nbsp;

WMO said that excessive heat is one of the deadliest meteorological events and a recent study estimates over 61,000 people died from heat during Europe's record-breaking summer last year.&nbsp;

Europe experienced its hottest summer on record in 2022, with blistering heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires affecting several countries. While the European Union's statistics agency, Eurostat, had previously reported a high number of excess deaths during the summer, the specific deaths directly linked to the heat had not been quantified until now.

Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and France's health research institute INSERM analysed temperature and mortality data from 2015 to 2022 for 823 regions across 35 European countries, covering a population of 543 million people.

Using models, they estimated the weekly number of deaths attributable to temperature for each region during the summer of 2022.

The study revealed that 61,672 deaths were linked to the heat between May 30 and September 4 of that year. The week of July 18-24 alone accounted for over 11,600 deaths due to an intense heatwave.

Hicham Achebak, an INSERM researcher and co-author of the study, described the number of deaths as "very high" and emphasised the need for further measures to protect the population.

Talking to AFP, he said: "We knew the effect of heat on mortality after 2003, but with this analysis, we see that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to protect the population."

<h2>Which regions were the hottest?</h2>

The study highlighted that France — a jump of 2.43 degrees Celsius — experienced the largest increase in heat compared to its previous summer average, followed closely by Switzerland (2.30C), Italy (2.28C), and Hungary (2.13C).

Italy at 18,010, however, recorded the highest death toll associated with the heat, followed by Spain (11,324) and Germany (8,173).

While the majority of deaths occurred among individuals over the age of 80, overall, women represented around 63 per cent of the heat-related fatalities.

The gender disparity became more significant in the 80-plus age group, with women having a mortality rate 27 per cent higher than men.

<h2>Future heat projections</h2>

The research predicted future scenarios if no action is taken to protect people from rising temperatures. As per the study, by 2030, Europe could witness over 68,000 heat-related deaths every summer.

By 2040, this number could rise to over 94,000, and by 2050, it could surpass 120,000.

"These predictions are based on the current level of vulnerability and future temperatures," said Achebak adding that "if we take very effective measures, that vulnerability can be reduced."

In 2022, Europe experienced the worst drought since the Middle Ages; it killed around 15,000 people: WHO

On Wednesday, scientists indicated that climate change has contributed to making record drought across the northern hemisphere this summer at least 20 times more likely. These findings are especially alarming considering without human-induced global heating they would expect such an event only once every four centuries.&nbsp;

“The 2022 summer has shown how human-induced climate change is increasing the risks of droughts in densely populated and cultivated regions,” said Professor&nbsp;Sonia Seneviratne&nbsp;of ETH Zurich, Switzerland, who is also a part of the analysis team. She also warned that we need to phase out burning fossil fuels to prevent “more frequent and more intense droughts”.&nbsp;

According to experts, the intensity of the summer heat in 2022 would have been “virtually impossible” without global heating. In Europe&nbsp;alone, heat waves caused nearly 24,000 heat-related fatalities. These heat-related drought conditions have led to food shortages in the Western US and critically low water levels in rivers in countries like Germany. These conditions have also caused food prices to soar across the world.&nbsp;

The new study is published by 21 members of the World Weather Attribution group, using peer-reviewed methods. The group is a global collective of scientists who examine and analyse ties between extreme weather events and human-caused climate change.&nbsp;

According to reports, their key drought metric is calculating the changes in soil moisture and for this study, they analysed soil moisture levels in June, July and August of this year, in the top metre of soil, where plants take up water. Subsequently, the scientists used weather and soil data with computer models to compare and predict the likelihood of summer drought in the context of today’s global warming and in a world without it. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This comes amid the record drought already affecting crop production and power supplies, this is in addition to the food and energy crisis sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These dry conditions have been assessed by collecting and using data on soil moisture and have been attributed to heatwaves that swept across North America, Europe and Asia, with lower rainfall relatively less important.&nbsp;

The study examined conditions across the northern hemisphere excluding the tropical regions. Scientists also focused on western and central Europe where the drought was particularly severe and led to a significant reduction in crop yields. Reportedly, the summer in Europe this year was the driest on record which dates back to 1950 and it was the second driest on record in the northern hemisphere after 2012.&nbsp;

The primary cause for an increase in drought likelihood has been attributed to warmer temperatures, said the study. “In Europe, drought conditions led to reduced harvests. This was particularly worrying as it followed a climate change-fuelled heatwave in (India and Pakistan) that also destroyed crops, and happened at a time when global food prices were already extremely high due to the war in Ukraine.” said team member, Dr Friederike Otto, at Imperial College London, UK.&nbsp;

Speaking about South Asian countries, scientists had already found that the deadly heatwave in the region was made 30 times more likely by human-induced climate change. Additionally, the intense rainfall, which caused devastating floods across Pakistan, earlier this year, was made 50% worse due to global warming, said the study.&nbsp;

“This new study clearly points to the fingerprint of climate change and should be another wake-up call to reduce emissions, but also to invest more in resilience,” said professor and director of the Red Cross’s Red Crescent climate centre, Maarten van Aalst.&nbsp;

In a world with climate change, the record northern hemisphere drought of 2022 would be expected at least once every 20 years. On the other hand, without climate change, such an event would be experienced only once every 400 years. The study also indicates that the drought experienced in western and central Europe was made at least three to four times more likely by global warming.&nbsp;

The analysis is complicated and carries uncertainties, but the estimates in the study are conservative, said the scientists. They added, with the real influence of human activities likely they might even be higher than what the study shows.&nbsp;

These findings are especially alarming considering without human-induced global heating they would expect such an event only once every four centuries. “The 2022 summer has shown how human-induced climate change is increasing the risks of droughts in densely populated and cultivated regions,” said Professor Sonia Seneviratne of ETH Zurich, Switzerland, who is also a part of the analysis team. She also warned that we need to phase out burning fossil fuels to prevent “more frequent and more intense droughts”. According to experts, the intensity of the summer heat in 2022 would have been “virtually impossible” without global heating. In Europe alone, heat waves caused nearly 24,000 heat-related fatalities. These heat-related drought conditions have led to food shortages in the Western US and critically low water levels in rivers in countries like Germany. These conditions have also caused food prices to soar across the world. The new study is published by 21 members of the World Weather Attribution group, using peer-reviewed methods. The group is a global collective of scientists who examine and analyse ties between extreme weather events and human-caused climate change. ALSO READ: 'Significant milestone': Hole in the ozone layer will close in the next 50 years According to reports, their key drought metric is calculating the changes in soil moisture and for this study, they analysed soil moisture levels in June, July and August of this year, in the top metre of soil, where plants take up water. Subsequently, the scientists used weather and soil data with computer models to compare and predict the likelihood of summer drought in the context of today’s global warming and in a world without it. This comes amid the record drought already affecting crop production and power supplies, this is in addition to the food and energy crisis sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These dry conditions have been assessed by collecting and using data on soil moisture and have been attributed to heatwaves that swept across North America, Europe and Asia, with lower rainfall relatively less important. The study examined conditions across the northern hemisphere excluding the tropical regions. Scientists also focused on western and central Europe where the drought was particularly severe and led to a significant reduction in crop yields. Reportedly, the summer in Europe this year was the driest on record which dates back to 1950 and it was the second driest on record in the northern hemisphere after 2012. The primary cause for an increase in drought likelihood has been attributed to warmer temperatures, said the study. “In Europe, drought conditions led to reduced harvests. This was particularly worrying as it followed a climate change-fuelled heatwave in (India and Pakistan) that also destroyed crops, and happened at a time when global food prices were already extremely high due to the war in Ukraine.” said team member, Dr Friederike Otto, at Imperial College London, UK. Additionally, the intense rainfall, which caused devastating floods across Pakistan, earlier this year, was made 50% worse due to global warming, said the study. “This new study clearly points to the fingerprint of climate change and should be another wake-up call to reduce emissions, but also to invest more in resilience,” said professor and director of the Red Cross’s Red Crescent climate centre, Maarten van Aalst. In a world with climate change, the record northern hemisphere drought of 2022 would be expected at least once every 20 years. On the other hand, without climate change, such an event would be experienced only once every 400 years. The study also indicates that the drought experienced in western and central Europe was made at least three to four times more likely by global warming. The analysis is complicated and carries uncertainties, but the estimates in the study are conservative, said the scientists. They added, with the real influence of human activities likely they might even be higher than what the study shows. Rome's oppressively high temperatures are being braved by visitors with a little help from fans and the city's abundant fresh water fountains.

The capital of Italy has been experiencing highs of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), and as a result, people are lining up at the numerous fountains and drinking fountains to cool off.

Cyclists in the Tour de France in southern France had to puff their way over the course in well over 30C.

In the Netherlands, farmers have been leaving their cows outside to sleep, rather than bringing them in at night, while Dutch media said hundreds of pigs died when a ventilator failed at Middelharnis.

On Wednesday, the southern Dutch town of Gilze-Rijen experienced 38.8C heat, surpassing a record dating back 75 years.

Belgium registered an all-time high of 39.9C at the Kleine-Brogel military base, beating a record that dated back to June 1947.

And Germany's western town of Geilenkirche sweltered through 40.5C.

Rail woes&nbsp;

Trains in Britain and France were slowed in response to the extreme weather.&nbsp;

French rail operator SNCF advised travellers in the worst affected areas to delay journeys planned at the peak of the heatwave Thursday.

Thalys and Eurostar train services between Brussels, Paris and London were on Wednesday disrupted by a failure on an overhead power line, although it was not immediately clear if this was due to the heatwave.

A Eurostar train bound for London tore down part of the cable support just outside Brussels. The 600 passengers were eventually taken back to Brussels, the Belga news agency said.

Across the area affected by the unusually high heat, people tried to cool off in lakes and rivers.

In London, police were searching for three people who went missing in the River Thames after going swimming while three people have drowned in Germany since Tuesday.

'Take care of others'&nbsp;

France's weather office said the scorching conditions "require particular care, notably for vulnerable or exposed people" with almost the entire country under an orange-level weather alert, the second-highest level.

Paris, in particular, remains haunted by the early summer of 2003 when 15,000 deaths were blamed on the heat and the authorities were bitterly criticised for not mobilising fast enough.

"We need to take care of ourselves but above all others especially those who are alone, and be able to detect the first symptoms of heat stroke," said Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

Local authorities have placed restrictions on water usage in many areas due to drought-like conditions that have seen the ground and river water levels fall dramatically.
