Popularity Of Major European Heads Of States Goes Down, What Is Driving The Outrage?

President Donald Trump says current sanctions on Russia are too weak and has urged European nations to stop buying Russian oil. While signaling his willingness to impose tougher sanctions—including new measures on banks, oil, and tariffs—Trump criticized Vladimir Putin and called on G7 nations to take coordinated action. His remarks come as tensions rise over Moscow's actions in Ukraine, and as U.S. pressure extends to India and beyond.

Trump warns Europe on Russia: “Sanctions aren’t tough enough”

Trade talks between India and the European Union have entered a decisive stage. With bilateral trade already at $137 billion, negotiators are racing against a year-end deadline to seal a free trade pact that could reshape economic ties. But the talks are complicated by high tariffs, agricultural sensitivities, and US pressure over Russian oil.

India and the European Union are stepping up their efforts to finalize an ambitious free trade agreement, with two crucial negotiation rounds planned for the next month to iron out longstanding issues. These talks aim to resolve differences on key areas such as rules of origin, market access, and duties on wine and dairy products. The EU's top trade officials, including European Commission's agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen and trade chief Maros Sefcovic, are set aside differences and finalize the agreement by the end of the year.

Deadly overnight Russian missile strikes on Kyiv have killed at least 18 people and injured dozens more. Among the targets hit were buildings housing the British Council and EU delegation offices, prompting strong international condemnation.

In response, both the UK and European Union summoned Russian ambassadors, calling the attacks "deliberate" and a "blow to peace efforts." European leaders, including UK PM Starmer and EU’s Ursula von der Leyen, vowed that the attacks would not go unanswered.

Nuclear tensions escalate: Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to hold a high-stakes phone call with his French, German, and British counterparts — along with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas — in a last-ditch effort to avoid the reimposition of United Nations sanctions under the "snapback" mechanism.

The call comes just days before a looming deadline, as European signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal grow increasingly concerned about Iran's uranium enrichment, especially after Tehran cut off all cooperation with the IAEA.

Implementation Delays Raise Fears of ‘forever Negotiations’

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced she will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a key meeting with Donald Trump at the White House. This coordinated move, also involving other top EU leaders, aims to show a united European front and support for Ukraine amid concerns that Trump may push for a peace deal on Russia's terms.

The summit follows a tense February meeting between Zelensky and Trump, where the Ukrainian president faced intense pressure. With the war still raging and global attention focused on US-Russia relations, Monday’s meeting could shape the future of the Ukraine conflict and redefine Europe's role in peace negotiations.

Trump delays 50% EU tariffs until July 9 after talks with European Commission President

US President Donald Trump on May 23 reignited fears of a transatlantic trade war, announcing plans to impose a 50 per cent tariff on all European Union (EU) imports starting June 1, unless the bloc makes major concessions in ongoing trade talks. The surprise move, made via Trump’s Truth Social account, sent shockwaves through global financial markets and drew sharp rebukes from EU leaders. The announcement comes as negotiations between Washington and Brussels have stalled, with the US pushing for more favourable terms for the trade deal and the EU resisting unilateral demands. In his post on Truth Social, Trump said, “The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on trade, has been very difficult to deal with. Their powerful trade barriers, VAT taxes, ridiculous corporate penalties, non-monetary trade barriers, monetary manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against American companies, and more have led to a trade deficit with the US of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable.”“Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50 per cent tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025. There is no tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States,” he added. The comments marked a dramatic shift after weeks of de-escalation and a temporary 90-day pause in reciprocal tariffs that had offered a brief reprieve for global markets. The markets responded with immediate volatility. US and European stocks plunged, with Germany’s DAX down 2.4 per cent, France’s CAC falling 2.2 per cent, and the STOXX600 sliding 1.7 per cent. The US dollar weakened sharply, while gold prices surged as investors sought safety. US Treasury yields also fell amid fears of a potential economic slowdown. The White House’s plan to double down on tariffs was reportedly driven by frustration over slow EU negotiations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the president is dissatisfied with the EU’s offers.“The president believes the EU’s proposals have not matched the quality of offers we’ve seen from other key partners,” Bessent told Fox News. “I would hope this would light a fire under the EU.”The proposed tariff also threatens to raise costs for a broad swath of consumer and industrial goods in the United States, ranging from German cars to Italian olive oil and French cosmetics. In 2024, the EU exported goods worth approximately €500 billion ($566 billion) to the US, led by Germany (€161 billion), Ireland (€72 billion), and Italy (€65 billion). Many of these goods are crucial components in American manufacturing supply chains.Ocean freight data from logistics platforms indicate that after a dip earlier in the year, EU-to-US shipments had begun to recover. Analysts now warn that the threat of a 50 per cent tariff could cause ocean freight orders to contract again, complicating logistics and increasing costs for US-based producers. The US ran a $236 billion goods trade deficit with the EU in 2024, according to data from the Commerce Department, with key imports including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and aircraft components.American manufacturers have already raised concerns that key inputs from Europe would become significantly more expensive. This could erode competitiveness, delay production timelines, and reduce investment incentives for companies that rely on transatlantic supply chains.Trump had previously lowered his 145 per cent tariff on Chinese goods to 30 per cent and retained a 10 per cent baseline tariff on most global imports. The 50 per cent figure now proposed for the EU significantly exceeds previous reciprocal tariffs, which had peaked at 20 per cent earlier this year. EU pushes back European leaders swiftly denounced the move and warned of possible retaliation. EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič emphasised that Brussels remains committed to a deal but will defend its interests if provoked.“EU-US trade must be guided by mutual respect, not threats,” Šefčovič posted on X. “We stand ready to defend our interests.”French Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin criticised Trump’s comments as “unhelpful”, and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin warned the tariffs would “grievously damage one of the world’s most dynamic and significant trading relationships.”The EU has already paused tariffs on €23 billion ($26.15 billion) worth of US goods and has prepared up to €95 billion ($1.08 trillion) in countermeasures if talks fail. These could affect sectors ranging from aviation to spirits and technology services—a crucial part of the US economy.Julian Hinz, a researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, estimated that a 50 per cent tariff could reduce US GDP by 1.5 per cent, while Capital Economics projected Ireland, the EU’s most trade-dependent country with the US, could see a 4 per cent hit to its economy. Strategic tensions and policy uncertainty Beyond the economic costs, the proposed tariffs have strategic implications. The Trump administration is pushing the EU to align more closely with US policy on China, including coordinated tariffs on Chinese goods and curbs on market access. However, EU policymakers have been cautious, concerned that a confrontational stance toward China could hurt their own export-dependent economies. The US has also expressed frustration over Europe's insistence on mutual tariff reductions and its proposed digital services taxes targeting American technology giants. Negotiations have been hindered by the EU’s need to secure consensus among its 27 member states, a process that the Trump administration views as too slow and fragmented.Experts say the lack of a clear negotiating framework and Trump’s erratic style add further uncertainty. In prior trade disputes, such as with China and Mexico, Trump has escalated tariffs quickly and then reversed course when faced with market backlash. The unpredictability has made long-term planning difficult for companies and weakened confidence in the US as a stable trade partner. The broader geopolitical context also looms large. With tensions rising across multiple fronts, including with China, Mexico, and now the EU, analysts warn that prolonged tariff battles could result in global supply chain disruptions and a downturn in cross-border investment. Deadline pressure and potential economic fallout The June 1 deadline now looms as a critical flashpoint in global trade. While trade talks are expected to continue in Paris, the positions remain far apart. The EU has already suspended tariffs on $26 billion worth of US goods and has prepared retaliatory measures on up to $108 billion in exports should negotiations break down.Economic projections underscore the stakes. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy estimates a potential 1.5 per cent drop in US GDP if the tariff is implemented. Capital Economics projects that Ireland could see a 4 per cent hit to its output, with Germany, Italy, France, and Spain also suffering notable slowdowns.Adding to the fragility, Moody’s recently downgraded the US credit outlook, citing concerns about rising debt and the erratic nature of trade and fiscal policy. With a $36 trillion debt burden and uncertainty surrounding the future of US tax policy, investor sentiment remains fragile. As June 1 approaches, businesses, policymakers, and financial markets are bracing for what could become the most disruptive episode in US-EU trade relations in decades. Whether the tariff is ultimately a bargaining tactic or a firm policy shift, the fallout—economic, political, and strategic—could reshape transatlantic commerce well beyond 2025.

Top 10 world news: Trump slaps 50% tariffs on EU; Delhi issues fresh Covid advisory, and more

Five years after the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, both parties have signed a comprehensive agreement aimed at revitalising their relationship. This deal addresses key sectors such as trade, defence, energy, and fisheries, marking a significant step in UK-EU relations. The agreement comes at a time when global trade dynamics are shifting, notably with the United States imposing new tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration. Key components of the 'reset' deal 1. Trade and food exports A central element of the agreement is the easing of trade frictions, particularly concerning food and agricultural products. The UK and EU have agreed on a veterinary deal that reduces red tape and checks on animal and plant products. This move is expected to benefit UK food exporters, who have faced significant challenges since Brexit. According to the BBC, UK food exports to the EU have fallen by 34 per cent compared to 2019, largely due to increased paperwork and regulatory barriers. The new agreement aims to reverse this trend by simplifying export procedures. 2. Fisheries access In a notable concession, the UK has granted EU fishing vessels continued access to British waters for an additional 12 years, extending the existing arrangements until 2038. This extension is part of the broader trade-off to facilitate smoother trade relations and reduce barriers for UK exporters. While this move has been welcomed by EU member states, it has drawn criticism from UK fishing communities who view it as a compromise on national sovereignty. The BBC reports that the fishing rights extension was a key component in reaching the overall agreement. 3. Defence and security cooperation The agreement also encompasses enhanced cooperation in defence and security. Both parties have committed to regular strategic dialogues and joint initiatives to address shared security challenges. This renewed collaboration signifies a mutual recognition of the importance of collective security in an increasingly complex global landscape. 4. Energy collaboration Energy cooperation forms another pillar of the deal. The UK and EU have agreed to work closely on energy matters, including the integration of energy markets and joint efforts to achieve climate goals. This collaboration is expected to lead to more efficient energy distribution and support the transition to renewable energy sources. Economic implications The UK government projects that the agreement could yield economic benefits of up to £9 billion annually by 2040, with a modest boost of 0.3 per cent to the UK’s GDP. However, analysts caution that while the deal represents progress, it only partially mitigates the economic impact of Brexit. The Financial Times notes that the agreement recoups only a fraction of the economic losses incurred since the UK’s departure from the EU. Political reactions Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hailed the deal as a pragmatic step forward, emphasising the need to move beyond past political disputes. “It’s time to look forward,” he stated at the summit, highlighting the importance of practical solutions to improve the lives of British citizens. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed this sentiment, describing the summit as a “historic moment” and a “new chapter” in UK-EU relations. However, the agreement has faced criticism from some UK political figures. The European Commission has issued burner phones and stripped-down laptops to senior officials travelling to the US, over spying risk. This level of precaution was previously reserved for trips to China and Ukraine, according to the UK-based Financial Times. EU scared of US spying into commission systems? Issues burner phones to officials over security fears

Luxury goods giant LVMH reported a 2% decline in first-quarter sales. The dip comes amid mounting uncertainty sparked by Donald Trump’s global tariffs, including a 20% duty on European goods. The United States, which accounts for a quarter of LVMH’s total revenue, saw a slight overall sales decline, despite resilience in fashion, watches, and jewellery.

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg on Monday (April 14), with Ukraine topping the agenda, following a deadly Russian strike on the city of Sumy that left at least 34 people dead and more than 100 injured.
The attack, which took place on Palm Sunday, has drawn strong condemnation from European leaders, many of whom see it as a direct response to recent peace efforts. Russia has so far dismissed the proposed ceasefire, and EU leaders say this only proves why Ukraine must be fully supported.
“It reminds us why we must keep maximum pressure on Russia,” said EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, warning against letting up as President Vladimir Putin continues to reject diplomatic overtures.

Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski called the strike a “heinous” act, describing it as “Russia’s mocking answer” to President Trump’s attempts at brokering peace. “I hope the US administration realises that the leader of Russia is mocking their goodwill,” Sikorski added.

'The Russian version of a ceasefire'

The airstrike on Sumy has rattled Europe, coming at a time when talks of peace are still on the table. German Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz accused Moscow of “serious war crimes” and “perfidy” in how the attack was carried out.

Despite widespread outrage in Europe, US President Donald Trump offered a much more subdued response.

Trump: 'This is not my war'

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described the Sumy attack as “terrible,” but suggested it may have been unintentional. “I was told they made a mistake,” he said. “But I think it’s a horrible thing. I think the whole war’s a horrible thing,” he added.
Pressed to clarify if he believed the bombing was accidental, Trump said, “They made a mistake, I believe it was, look, you gotta ask them.” He then shifted blame, insisting, “This is Biden’s war. This is not my war.”
Trump repeated his longstanding claim that the war would not have happened under his presidency. “That war would have never taken place. But remember this: This is Biden’s war,” he said during a brief outburst that notably avoided mentioning either Putin or Russia by name.

Zelensky urges Trump to see the devastation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with CBS, warned that “Russian narratives are prevailing in the US,” and appeared to criticise US Vice President JD Vance for seemingly defending Moscow during a recent clash in the Oval Office.
Zelensky also made a direct appeal to Trump, asking him to witness the destruction before making any further decisions on peace talks. “Before any kind of decisions, any kind of forms of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead,” he pleaded.
