Despite aggressive sanctions to counter Russia's war chest, the European Union continues to import Russian fossil fuels in significant volumes. According to the latest report by the Centre for Research on Energy &amp; Clean Air (CREA), the EU spent $23 billion on Russian fuels in 2024. This is a 6 per cent value drop year-on-year but only a 1 per cent reduction in volume. Notably, the EU's fossil fuels from Russia exceeded the $19.5 billion in financial aid it provided to Ukraine in 2024. &nbsp;
<h2>Oil revenues fuel Russia's war chest</h2>
According to CREA, Russia's total fossil fuel revenues in the third year of the invasion reached $253 billion. The total earnings since 2022 have surpassed $885 billion. Despite Western sanctions targeting Russia's oil fleet, the revenues have only dropped by 8 per cent compared to pre-invasion levels.
Meanwhile, Europe has scrambled to reduce its dependency on Russian energy. While gas imports have fallen from 45 per cent in 2021 to 18 per cent in 2024, the EU still accounts for almost one-quarter of Russia's fossil fuel revenues. EU recently came up with the latest sanctions on Russia against the backdrop of Trump-Putin 'peace talks.' While the US is considering a softer stance on Russia, the EU continues to maintain a sanctions grip on Russia's war revenues.
<h2>Russia's 'sanctions evasion' tactics</h2>
Russia has adapted to sanctions by re-routing oil exports using a growing 'shadow' fleet. A total of 558 Russian shadow vessels worked overtime in 2024 to deliver oil worth $87 billion. China, India, and Turkiye bought the bulk of Russia's oil, with China leading with $81.6 billion. Indirect flow of Russian oil to G7 countries via India and Turkiye also surged, with imports worth $18.8 billion.
The report highlights 'ship-to-ship' transfers conducted on EU waters. Russia trans-shipped 5.2 million tonnes in 2024, with 43 per cent involving shadow tankers. The highest STS activity was recorded in Greece, Romania, Italy, and Malta. Over 87 'hub tankers' have been identified since 2022, with 68 still active.
The report also raises environmental concerns around shadow tankers, with damages reaching over $1 billion dollars.&nbsp;

Europe's 'Russian energy' paradox: Russian gas purchases in 2024 exceed aid sent to Ukraine

European electric transport organisations have asked the EU to maintain ambitious CO2 emission goals for 2025 with their related penalty system. Published through a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen E-Mobility Europe alongside ChargeUp Europe demanded the preservation of environmental guidelines to maintain the European EV market evolution process. &nbsp;
A Reuters-reviewed letter insisted that the automotive industry should not be allowed to implement delayed CO2 restriction targets or use multi-year average computation of penalties. The letter advocated that EU organisations dedicate all fines they received towards supporting the quick advancement of EV technology through government aid and network expansion efforts. &nbsp;
The growing competition from Chinese EV manufacturers along with U.S. tariffs has forced European automakers to warn about facing &euro;15 billion (USD 15.7 billion) in fines due to non-compliance of 2025 emissions targets. Industry leaders indicate that poor consumer interest in EVs because customers worry about charging infrastructure makes maintaining compliance difficult. &nbsp;
Electric transport supporters do not agree with this assertion. Electra CEO Aurelien de Meaux called this argument misleading as the present European charging network has capacity to serve up to seven times more vehicles beyond its current density. He stated that infrastructure development throughout the sector receives substantial funding for additional expansion. &nbsp;
Defense policy revisions would create an absolute disaster according to de Meaux who emphasised that regulatory weakening might damage EU electric vehicle market competition with China while discouraging investments in battery supply and charging network development. &nbsp;
The letter demonstrated that the 2025 CO2 targets remain achievable because of 11 new EV models priced below &euro;25,000 and a 40% annual sales growth observed during January 2025. It also challenged automakers&rsquo; fine projections, suggesting penalties would likely be closer to &euro;4-6 billion, and could be reduced further through trading emission credits with other companies. &nbsp;
The groups also called for stronger policies to encourage corporate fleet electrification, noting that fleets account for approximately 60% of new car sales in the EU.

EU foreign ministers on Monday agreed to begin easing sanctions on Syria after the ouster of Bashar al-Assad, as the West looks to build bridges with the war-ravaged country's new leadership.&nbsp;
"This could give a boost to the Syrian economy and help the country get back on its feet," foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas said after a meeting in Brussels.&nbsp;
"While we aim to move fast, we also are ready to reverse the course if the situation worsens, and in parallel, we will scale up humanitarian aid and recovery efforts."&nbsp;
The 27-nation EU imposed wide-ranging sanctions on the Assad government and Syria's economy during its civil war.
Kallas said ministers had signed up to a "roadmap" for lifting the sanctions, starting with key sectors such as energy, where relief is needed most urgently.&nbsp;
France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the EU could begin by suspending sanctions on the energy, transport, and banking sectors.

Amid Syria's civil war that resulted in the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, Germany has suspended its decisions on asylum requests from Syrians on Monday, December 9, the interior minister said.

Germany is home to Europe’s largest diaspora from the country after taking in nearly one million Syrians during 2015-16 under former chancellor Angela Merkel.

“The end of the brutal tyranny of the Syrian dictator Assad is a great relief for many people who have suffered from torture, murder and terror,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a statement.

However, “the situation in Syria is currently very unclear,” she cautioned.&nbsp;

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has paused the decisions for asylum procedures that are ongoing until the situation becomes clearer.

According to the interior ministry, 974,136 Syrian nationals were living in Germany. While 5,090 of these were acknowledged as eligible for asylum, 321,444 were granted the status of refugee, and 329,242 were given subsidiary protection, a temporary stay of deportation. Tens of thousands of other cases remain pending.

<h2>EU 'not currently engaging' with Syrian rebels</h2>

The European Union said on Monday&nbsp;that it is not in contact with the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew the rule of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The EU has also urged for a peaceful political transition in the country.

Although HTS broke ties with Al-Qaeda in 2016, the group and its leader, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, remain under EU sanctions.

“The European Union is not currently engaging with HTS or its leaders, full stop,” EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni said.&nbsp;

“As HTS takes on greater responsibilities, we will need to assess not just their words but also their actions.”

<h2>UK will 'quickly' decide on terror status of HTS&nbsp;</h2>

The UK will “quickly” decide whether to remove the Islamist group HTS from the list of terrorist organisations, Pat McFadden, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations of the United Kingdom, said on Monday, December 9.

The group is classified as a terror group in the UK and the United States.

“If the situation stabilises, there'll be a decision to make about how to deal with whatever new regime is in place there,” he told BBC Radio 4.

However, “the situation in Syria is currently very unclear,” she cautioned. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has paused the decisions for asylum procedures that are ongoing until the situation becomes clearer. Tens of thousands of other cases remain pending. EU 'not currently engaging' with Syrian rebels The European Union said on Monday that it is not in contact with the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew the rule of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The EU has also urged for a peaceful political transition in the country. Although HTS broke ties with Al-Qaeda in 2016, the group and its leader, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, remain under EU sanctions. “The European Union is not currently engaging with HTS or its leaders, full stop,” EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni said. “As HTS takes on greater responsibilities, we will need to assess not just their words but also their actions.” Also read | Who are the Alawites, Assad's community, who dominated Syria despite being a minority UK will 'quickly' decide on terror status of HTS The UK will “quickly” decide whether to remove the Islamist group HTS from the list of terrorist organisations, Pat McFadden, Minister for Intergovernmental Relations of the United Kingdom, said on Monday, December 9. Pro-EU Protest In Georgia: Police Use Rubber Bullets, Tear Gas, Water Cannon On Protesters

Georgia's president said Monday that pro-EU protests involving tens of thousands of people showed no sign of stopping after police fired water cannons and tear gas on a fourth night of demonstrations.

The Black Sea nation has been rocked by turmoil since the governing Georgian Dream party claimed victory on October 26 in parliamentary elections that the pro-European opposition said were fraudulent.

More rallies were planned on Monday and strikes and other protests also started. Ukraine joined countries that have condemned the government crackdown on rallies that have left injuries and arrests.

"Another powerful night of Georgians standing firm to defend their constitution and their European choice," President Salome Zurabishvili posted on X.

"The determination in the streets shows no signs of stopping!" the pro-EU leader wrote.

Troubles deepened after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced Thursday that Georgia was shelving accession talks with the European Union until 2028. There has been a wave of protests in the capital, Tbilisi, and other cities.&nbsp;

Kobakhidze further angered protesters Sunday by ruling out new elections, saying "the formation of the new government based on the October 26 parliamentary elections has been completed".

The opposition is boycotting the new parliament, and Zurabishvili has asked the constitutional court to annul the election result, declaring the new parliament and government "illegitimate".

Critics accuse Georgian Dream, in power for more than a decade, of having steered the country away from the European Union and moving closer to Russia, an accusation it denies.

Russia on Monday defended the crackdown on protesters, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying authorities are taking "measures to stabilise" the situation, accusing protesters of trying to "stir up" unrest.

Russia sees "the most direct parallel" with Ukraine's "Maidan" protest that ousted a Kremlin-backed leader in 2014 after he suspended talks on closer EU ties, Peskov said.

Tens of thousands rallied outside parliament in Tbilisi on Sunday waving European and Georgian flags.

Some demonstrators threw fireworks and stones at riot police, while others built barricades from dustbins and set them ablaze.

During the night, riot police moved in using tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds.

Dozens have been injured since Thursday, including demonstrators, police and journalists, according to officials and activists, though the exact numbers were unclear.

<h2>'Systematic beatings'&nbsp;</h2>

Zurabishvili said Monday that those detained by police "have been subjected to systematic beatings" after arrest.

The "majority of the arrested protesters have injuries to their heads and faces, broken face bones, eye sockets, open wounds," she said.

The leader of the opposition United National Movement party, Levan Khabeishvili, told journalists he was attacked by around 15 masked police attempting to detain him but managed to escape with the help of protesters.

Tens of thousands head back to streets in Georgia over pro-EU protests, prez says protesters 'standing firm'

Police in&nbsp;Georgia&nbsp;arrested dozens of people overnight and early Friday in a violent crackdown on protests against the government's decision to delay EU membership talks.

The Black Sea nation has been rocked by turmoil since the ruling party declared victory in October parliamentary elections that the pro-EU opposition decried as falsified.

On Thursday night and Friday morning, riot police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons to disperse gatherings outside parliament in Tbilisi, beating peaceful protesters and journalists, an AFP reporter witnessed.

The interior ministry said 32 of its staff were injured and "43 individuals were detained by law enforcement for disobeying lawful police orders and for petty hooliganism".

Thousands of people took to the streets after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of the ruling Georgian Dream party shelved plans to pursue membership of the European Union until 2028.

The opposition has accused Georgian Dream of steering Tbilisi away from its long-held dream of joining the bloc and gravitating towards Russia.

Two politicians from the opposition Coalition for Change, Elene Khoshtaria and Nana Malashkhia, were reportedly injured during the protests.

Khoshtaria sustained a broken arm, while Malashkhia suffered a broken nose, the coalition said.

Prominent poet Zviad Ratiani was among those arrested, the PEN Writers' association in Georgia said, demanding his immediate release.

Ukraine said Friday it was "disappointed" by Tbilisi's decision to pause EU accession talks, accusing the Georgian government of trying to "please Moscow".

Opposition lawmakers are boycotting the new parliament, while Georgia's pro-EU president Salome Zurabishvili has sought to annul the election results through the country's constitutional court.

The prime minister's announcement to delay EU accession came hours after the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution rejecting the results of Georgia's October 26 elections, alleging "significant irregularities".

The resolution called for a new vote within a year under international supervision and for sanctions to be imposed on top Georgian officials, including Prime Minister Kobakhidze.

Accusing the European Parliament of "blackmail", Kobakhidze said: "We have decided not to bring up the issue of joining the European Union on the agenda until the end of 2028."

Georgia: Dozens arrested as pro-EU protesters clash with police

European leaders are panicking over the historic victory of Republican leader Donald Trump in the 2024 United States presidential elections, with calls growing for economic overhaul and reforms to boost growth. As European leaders gather in Hungary’s Budapest to discuss pressing economic issues these days, Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned it was high time the 27-nation bloc found a “balance”.

“Don’t ask what the US can do for you, ask what Europe should do for itself,” the Italian leader said. “Europe must find a balance. We know what we have to do,” she added.

The European Union has ample reasons to be worried over a Trump presidency in the US, amid fears over his policies concerning Ukraine war, NATO and trade protectionism. Trump previously warned the EU will have to pay “a big price” for not allowing wider market access to the US companies.

Earlier, former Italian prime minister and European Central Bank chief, Mario Draghi, also warned in a report that the 27-nation bloc faced a “slow and agonising decline” if it failed&nbsp;to act fast.

In a details report, Draghi proposed to inject a massive €800 billion&nbsp;investment booster shot into the European economy in a year, almost equal to five per cent of the EU’s total annual economic output. To implement this proposal, the EU may have to rely on more borrowings, something that remains a red line for a few economies.

“We have postponed too many important decisions in order to find consensus [among EU member states],” Draghi warned while talking to reporters. “That consensus did not come, and as a result we have suffered lower economic growth, and now stagnation,” he added.

Additionally, fears of instability within the EU bloc have grown as political crises weigh down two of the biggest European economies: France and Germany. Germany’s coalition government collapsed Wednesday (Nov 6) whereas Emmanuel Macron, the French president, continues to function without a parliamentary majority.

EU in panic after Trump’s victory, Italy’s Meloni warns can’t rely on US

A report by campaign group Transport &amp; Environment (T&amp;E) said Europe will need to spend an extra 39 billion euros a year to meet its net zero targets for the transport sector by 2050. Five key recommendations are made in the report to enable European Union decarbonisation of transport and fulfilling its climate targets.

In its T&amp;E report, the organisation stresses the need for an urgent coordinated EU level investment strategy to helping the transition to greener transport. Funding clean technologies and infrastructure forms part of a raft of moves following former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's September report calling for more coordinated industrial policy within the EU.

That's the equivalent of 39 billion euros of annual investment, not far off what the EU currently spends on fossil fuel transport subsidies every year, which is 34 billion euros. T&amp;E campaigns for those subsidies to be phased out and money from them to be spent on green transport alternatives. The report follows growing debate inside Europe over the future of electric vehicles (EVs) as some politicians and industry chiefs including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and BMW CEO Oliver Zipse urge a rethink on the EU's proposed 2035 end to the sale of new fossil fuel cars.

As well the proposals to allocate 772 billion euros (662.5 billion pounds) of EU funding to the green transition, T&amp;E is also pushing for a new EU budget with streamlined access to funding, for the creation of a '1tn pounds Social and Climate Investment Plan for 2024-2034', and a stronger role for the European Investment Bank. In addition, private investment will have to play a key role as well, T&amp;E suggesting that investment should be some 310 billion euros per year in 2030 and rise to some 507 billion euros in 2040, amounting to some 7.6 trillion euros over the coming decades.

If the investments occur early enough, the transition will be cheaper, T&amp;E noted, urging action to avoid tomorrow's big ticket environmental costs, and kick start the shift to a sustainable transport system.
