Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri has requested a replacement for Cesc Fabregas after his side's 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Spanish midfielder Fabregas has completed the transfer move to French club AS Monaco on Friday.

The move has left Jorginho as the only player Sarri considers capable of playing at the pivot position in his preferred 4-3-3 formation.

While speaking to media, Sarri said, "As you have seen today, today Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position, so I need a player for that position. I need an option for Jorginho."

Sarri also added that he has "no idea" when the club will get a suitable replacement.

"The club knows very well my opinion. I need a player there, so it depends on the club decision I think. I cannot do anything more," Sarri added.

Apart from talking about the transfer activities, Sarri has warned his Chelsea players to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought win over struggling Newcastle.

He told reporters, "Today we started very well I think, for 10 minutes, but after the goal, I think we thought 'now it's easy,' but it wasn't. And so we slept for 20-25 minutes and at the end of the first half, we were in trouble."

"Better in the second half but we need to improve in the mental reaction because, after our first goal, something happened," added Sarri.

Fourth-placed Chelsea extended their advantage over fifth-placed Arsenal to six points.

Declan Rice's first goal for West Ham United earned his side a deserved first home victory over Arsenal for 13 years on Saturday -- the youngster's 48th-minute strike securing a 1-0 win at the London Stadium.

Arsenal began brightly and then had a flurry of chances after falling behind but West Ham were good value for the three points as they put a dent in Arsenal's top-four hopes.

Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri, rebuilding his career at West Ham after a doping ban, was at the heart of much of their best work on his Premier League debut for the club.

It was the Frenchman's neat lay-off that allowed 19-year-old midfielder Rice the space to curl a superb shot past Bernd Leno.

The victory pushed West Ham into eighth place, before the rest of the weekend's fixtures, and after a difficult start manager Manuel Pellegrini appears to be turning West Ham into a side capable of challenging for the European places.

The Chilean, who steered Manchester City to the title, was happy with his former player Nasri who was given a resounding ovation when he was substituted midway through the second half.

"It was a good performance by Samir, he kept the pace for 65 minutes," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "I've spoken to him and told him I'm sure he can be the player he was."

Rice had already headed wide before halftime but the 19-year-old was lethal the next time an opportunity arrived.

Felipe Anderson's surge down the right and cross saw the ball land at the feet of Nasri who had the vision to shift it to Rice who finished like a top-class striker -- celebrating his big moment wildly with his teammates.

Special Moment

"I can't really put it into words," said Rice ahead of his birthday on Monday. "Usually I would pick a pass but I was in the box so I thought why not take it on? It went in the top corner and we beat Arsenal so it's a special moment for me."

Striker Alexandre Lacazette had a double chance for the visitors early on, forcing a save from former Arsenal keeper Łukasz Fabianski before firing the rebound over the bar.

West Ham then took control with Nasri dragging a shot wide and then setting up influential Brazilian midfielder Anderson to fire a daisy-cutter just past the post.

At the other end, Matteo Guendouzi's 25-metre effort flew just wide but Arsenal struggled to exert any sustained pressure.

After Rice's goal Arsenal did manage to raise the tempo with Alex Iwobi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang going close but West Ham weathered the storm and were worthy winners.

Fifth-placed Arsenal failed to score for the first time in 21 league matches and have now lost consecutive away games. They could find themselves six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea by the time they host their London rivals next weekend.

"We didn't impose ourselves on the game but we had enough (quality) players to win the game," manager Unai Emery said.

Declan Rice's first West Ham goal enough to sink Arsenal

Watford substitute Tom Cleverley volleyed a brilliant 74th-minute winner as they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Palace survived two shots against the same post in the third minute and went ahead seven minutes before halftime with a Craig Cathcart own goal in a goalmouth melee following a corner.

Defender Cathcart equalised in the 67th minute when he beat his marker James Tomkins to the ball at a corner and headed past substitute goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey at the far post with Watford’s first effort on target.

Cleverley then stunned Palace with the winner seven minutes later, volleying Tomkins’s clearance into the top corner.

Watford moved up to seventh on 32 points while Palace are 14th on 22, four points above the relegation zone.

Watford could have gone ahead after three minutes when Gerard Deulofeu hit the far post with a low shot from the right that beat Vicente Guaita’s dive and Roberto Pereyra hit the same upright with a follow-up shot from the left.

Palace were left to rue poor finishing when James McArthur failed to turn in Wilfried Zaha’s cross from the left when he was almost on the line in the 70th minute.

Ben Foster made decisive saves to frustrate Zaha and Luka Milivojevic.

Tough Defeat

Goal-line technology was needed for the opener to be given, with the ball having gone in off Cathcart’s thigh, handing Palace a lead that had manager Roy Hodgson believing another victory was on the way.

"Tough to lose any game especially at home," Hodgson said. "I was hoping we could get that elusive third straight victory.

"We started the second half brightly. The game evened out and while the game was still in the balance Tom Cleverley scored that wonderful volley."

Zaha should have doubled Palace's advantage just after halftime but saw his effort saved and that proved costly as Watford turned the match on its head.

Cathcart’s header made amends for his own goal before Cleverley’s first Premier League strike since October 2017 earned Watford the points.

"After conceding the first goal it was more difficult but we knew this team were conceding more goals in this period and it was our moment," Watford manager Javi Gracia said.

"We created enough chances to win the game."

Watford come from behind to beat Crystal Palace

Burnley beat Fulham 2-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday thanks to two own goals to make it three straight league wins for Sean Dyche's side and leave the visitors deep in relegation danger.

The Clarets won without a single shot of their own on target and rode their luck in a typical scrap between two teams fighting against the drop, played in cold, windy and wet conditions.

German international Andre Schurrle put Fulham, without an away win this season, ahead in brilliant fashion in the second minute, bringing down a long ball from Denis Odoi and blasting, first time, past Tom Heaton.

But Burnley got back on level terms in the 20th minute when Jeff Hendrick's low drive was turned into his own net by Fulham defender Joe Bryan.

Three minutes later and Hendrick had forced another own goal -- his drive headed in by Odoi to put the Clarets 2-1 up.

Fulham defender Calum Chambers headed against the bar just before the break -- a sign of what was to come from Claudio Ranieri's side in the second half.

Burnley defender James Tarkowski had to clear a Luciano Vietto drive off the line shortly after the interval and Fulham had most of the pressure after the break without creating many clear-cut chances.

Aside from some moments of quality from teenage winger Dwight McNeil, Burnley relied on hard work and long balls. The three points mean they move up to 15th place, while Fulham are next to bottom on 14 points, five points from safety.

"This period is very strange. We play well, we deserve minimum a draw," said Ranieri.

"The second half we play much better, move the ball quickly. They shoot at goal two or three times and one time they save on the line. These episodes change the music," added the Italian.

"There are good moments and bad moments. We never give up, we continue to believe that at the end we will be safe."

Dyche conceded his side had been lucky but felt they were due some good fortune.

"We have had a bit of luck today with the own goals but we haven't had much this season," he said.

The nine points from three games, including wins over West Ham and Huddersfield, has changed the mood at Turf Moor even if Dyche's side are still far from clear of trouble.

"It brings a feeling. There are no guarantees but it is a big shift for us. There is still more work to be done. Every game is important in the Premier League, no matter who you are playing. Usually you have to play on right until the last game," he said.

Fulham sunk by two own goals at Burnley

Liverpool went seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and bounced back from two successive defeats in all competitions after a Mohamed Salah penalty gave them a 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The result put Liverpool on 57 points from 22 games, seven ahead of closest rivals Manchester City who are at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday. Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have 48 points, host Manchester United on Sunday.

Manager Juergen Klopp was pleased with the outcome and the performance which he described as a "really nice song if not an opera of football".

"We learned from the first half and the second half was better," Klopp told the BBC.

"It was a mature performance from my side. This season it is quite a new skill and I'd like us to keep that.

"It was very hard but that is how it is. Everyone knows how difficult it is to go to Brighton."

Liverpool were clinical if unimpressive on the south coast, having lost 2-1 at City in their previous league outing before being beaten by Wolves in the FA Cup third round by the same scoreline.

After a dour first half, Salah produced a moment of trademark individual skill to win the spot-kick he converted five minutes into the second half after Pascal Gross had fouled him following the Egyptian's neat footwork in the penalty area.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who got a rare start on the right flank in a reshuffled 4-2-3-1 formation, missed Liverpool's best chance in the opening half when he headed just wide after Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.

As Brighton threw men forward in the closing stages, Liverpool twice came close to scoring again with the home team's goalkeeper David Button parrying Roberto Firmino's effort before Salah misfired wide from five metres.

Klopp singled out Alexander-Arnold, who picked up an ankle injury in the warm-up but played through the pain for the full 90 minutes.

"It was a shock in that moment," said the German. "It was the last situation of the warming up. He wants to play so he doesn't say immediately.

"On the way in we thought he couldn't play so James Milner did a warm-up but it was a brilliant decision from the medical staff and Trent. He played well."

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said that the team "lost a very great opportunity to take three points" after his side lost 1-0 at West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

Paul Pogba will be fit to return from injury for Manchester United's Premier League match at Tottenham this weekend, interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday.

The France midfielder linked up late with his team-mates for a warm-weather training camp in Dubai this week after being injured in a challenge by Jonjo Shelvey during the 2-0 victory at Newcastle on January 2.

Pogba missed last Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup victory over Reading as a result of the knock, but trained well in the United Arab Emirates, according to Solskjaer.

"He looked OK towards the end, so he will be fit. He did have some problems but he came through last couple of sessions well, so he should be OK," the Norwegian said.

Solskjaer has made a perfect start as United's coach since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho on December 19, winning each of his first five matches in charge.

The former United striker, who is on loan from Norwegian club Molde until the end of the season, has made clear since his return to Old Trafford he would love the manager's job on a permanent basis.

However, his opponent on Sunday, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino, is believed by many observers to be the likeliest person to get the United job.

Solskjaer praised the Argentinian and justified the reports.

"He has done a very good job. That speculation is there for a reason -– because he has done well -– but it's not my job to rate managers. My focus is on me and my team."

Tottenham test

The interim boss, though, has rejected the idea that this match represents his first serious challenge in charge of United, following wins over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading.

"We've had tests. Newcastle away is a test and the first game was a test as to how everyone reacted. The first home game with the crowd is a test," he said.

"We are not going to get as many chances to attack against these as we had before so when we have the ball we have to be ready to play well with it and we have to use the whole pitch because Wembley is a decent size pitch as well," he added.

One of United's biggest test will be containing the threat of Tottenham striker Harry Kane, the joint-leading scorer in this season's Premier League, with 14 goals.

"He's not bad is he? He is a fantastic goal scorer and one of the best in the world, but I have got a couple that I'm happy to work with," Solskjaer said

"He is a top professional. Sure, whoever plays with him and trains with him can talk more about him, but from the outside he is a fantastic finisher," the 1999 treble winner said.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, revealed defender Marcos Rojo has returned to his native Argentina as he continues to recover from a leg injury that has kept him out for a month.

"He has gone back to Argentina for a while because of his injury. How long will he be out for? How long is a piece of rope? For him it was mentally important to go away and come back fresh again."

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has defended his side's youth development record after academy graduate Brahim Diaz left for Real Madrid, saying he only wants to work with players who are committed to the club.

The 19-year-old Diaz completed a move to the Spanish capital on Monday, following in the footsteps of English winger Jadon Sancho, who left City in 2017 for Borussia Dortmund to make a huge impact in the German Bundesliga.

City failed to keep both players at the Etihad Stadium due to a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said youngsters must be patient if they are to make a breakthrough at any of the Europe's elite clubs.

"They win the opportunity (to play) on the field but you have to take a look at all the big clubs in Europe how many young players are in the first team," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's League Cup semi-final first-leg against Burton Albion on Wednesday.

"The young players need time. David Silva, for example, was loaned to others before he became what he is right now, before he came us. Some have patience, some trust what the club want to do, and some don't."

England under-21 playmaker Phil Foden committed his long-term future to City last month, having received a public backing from Guardiola this season.

"Like I said many times, I don't want people that don't want to stay here," the Spanish coach added.

"We did with Brahim everything we have done with Phil (Foden) and with Jadon - important players and we did absolutely everything. The only one who decides to stay is Phil."

Foden is set to feature against Burton with Guardiola having almost his full squad available to cope with the demands of the Premier League and domestic cup competitions this month.

Guardiola said French full back Benjamin Mendy, who is on the sidelines with a knee injury, could return to first-team action in two-to-three weeks.

"He's training alone," Guardiola added. "Two weeks, three weeks maybe (until he returns). Everybody else is fit."

City will return to league action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday as they continue to chase Liverpool, who are four points clear at the top of the table.

Don't want players who don't want to play for Manchester City, Pep Guardiola defends Brahim Diaz departure

Stoke City have sacked manager Gary Rowett with immediate effect after eight months in charge, the English Championship (second-tier) club announced on Tuesday.

The decision comes from the Stoke hierarchy after a run of one win in six matches across all competitions.

Rowett left Derby County to join Stoke in the close-season as the club eyed an immediate return to the Premier League having been relegated after 10 years in the top division, where they had mostly been a comfortable mid-table team.

However, instead of dominating England's second-tier, Stoke's struggles have continued as they have won just eight of their 26 league fixtures.

"Stoke City have terminated the contract of manager Gary Rowett," the club said in a statement.

"Members of his immediate coaching staff have also left the bet365 Stadium.

"The club would like to thank Gary and his staff for their efforts over the past eight months.

"A new managerial appointment will be made as swiftly as possible but in the meantime Rory Delap, Kevin Russell and Andy Quy will take charge of first-team affairs."

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is unsure whether midfielder Cesc Fabregas has played his last game for the club but he feels the Spaniard must leave for the good of his career.

Fabregas appeared to say goodbye to Chelsea after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, where he applauded all sides of the ground.

The 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season, with British media reporting the player is close to securing a move to AS Monaco this month.

"I don't know if he is able to play tomorrow because in the last match he had cramp in the calf so he needs to rest I think," Sarri told reporters ahead of Chelsea's League Cup semi-final first-leg clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

"Yesterday he had a free day for the injury but I don't know (if he is going to Monaco). I can say only my opinion, I don't know the decision of the club. In my opinion he needs to go."

Fabregas, who has won two Premier League titles since joining Chelsea in 2014, has struggled for first-team opportunities under Sarri, making six appearances in the league this season.

"You know very well the situation and in our club there is a rule, the renewal for players over 30 is usually for a year," Sarri added.

"He has an offer for two years and I don't want a very important player like Cesc to be unhappy."

Sarri ruled out Ruben Loftus-Cheek from the Spurs clash at Wembley Stadium after the midfielder was substituted against Forest with a back injury.

The Italian coach said the club will look to boost their midfield options if Fabregas leaves this month.

"Now with the midfield we are in trouble because I don't know about the situation with Loftus-Cheek, if it's serious or not," Sarri added.

"Without Cesc we only have five so we need a replacement."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits the "outstanding" Naby Keita has yet to reproduce the form that persuaded him to sign the midfielder -- but says he has a bright future at Anfield.

The 23-year-old started his Liverpool career brightly and has made 18 appearances so far this season but he has failed to feature in the past three matches for the Premier League leaders.

However, Klopp is prepared to give the Guinea international, who arrived from RB Leipzig during the summer, time to adapt.

"I spoke to Naby. Everything is fine. I am completely happy with Naby," said the Liverpool boss.

"Could he be a bit more confident in the games? Yes. Is he exactly the player in his best time at Leipzig? No. He is still adapting, that's how it is.

"Everyone saw at the beginning of the season how brilliant he played."

Klopp said minor injury problems had held the player back but he was a welcome addition to the squad.

"It is so good and I am looking forward to our common future," he said. "You see it every day, wow, there is so much to come and there is so much influence he can have on each game."

He added: "There is really no doubt about the boy, he is an outstanding player."

Keita is likely to get a start in the FA Cup tie at Wolves on Monday as one of a number of players in need of pitch time.

Another of those is Adam Lallana, who has also had his struggles with injuries.

"I can tell you it is a good opportunity for all the players," added Klopp. "Adam is actually in outstanding shape. It's unbelievable. It was close in the last game whether we started him or not. He is really, really good."

Premier League champions Manchester City began their FA Cup campaign with a 7-0 thrashing of Rotherham on Sunday but Fulham, battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League, were beaten 2-1 by fourth-tier Oldham.

Barnet ensured there would be a non-league presence in the fourth round with a 1-0 win away to second-tier Championship club Sheffield United.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola may have made eight changes from the team that beat Premier League leaders Liverpool on Thursday but still fielded a strong side for the visit of Championship club Rotherham, with Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus all starting as playmaker Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury.

De Bruyne played in Sterling for a 12th-minute opener and City then scored twice in the closing stages of the first half.

Phil Foden, the England Under-21 international, got on the end of a cross from Ilkay Gundogan in the 43rd minute before Rotherham defender Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net.

Jesus made it 4-0 early in the second half before Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane added further goals.

Denis Odoi put Fulham ahead in the 52nd minute at Craven Cottage but Sam Sturridge drew Oldham level with a penalty before Callum Lang's header two minutes from time sealed a comeback win.

Daniel Iversen compounded Fulham's misery by saving an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty just moments earlier.

Elsewhere, Barnet beat Championship high-flyers Sheffield United thanks to Shaquile Coulthirst's 21st-minute penalty.

Watford manager Javi Gracia changed his entire starting side from the team that drew 3-3 at Bournemouth, with Venezuela forward Adalberto Penaranda making his Hornets debut against non-league Woking.

But hopes of Woking, 110 places adrift of the Hornets, enjoying a shock win suffered a setback when Will Hughes curled in a 13th-minute shot from the edge of the area.

Watford made it 2-0 16 minutes from time when Troy Deeney scored from close range.

Millwall came from a goal down to beat Championship rivals Hull 2-1, substitute Shane Ferguson scoring twice inside the closing eight minutes.

QPR beat Championship leaders Leeds by the same scoreline, Jake Bidwell scoring a 75th-minute winner for the west London club.

Fourth-tier Newport County are at home to Premier League Leicester in Sunday's 1630 GMT kick-off.

On Saturday, FA Cup holders Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in what seems certain to have been Cesc Fabregas's final match for the Blues.

Arsenal, the record 13-times FA Cup winners, won 3-0 at Blackpool, West Ham beat Birmingham 2-0 but Everton had to work hard to see off Lincoln 2-1.

Saturday also saw Championship club Bristol City beat top-flight basement club Huddersfield 1-0.

Elsewhere, in an all-Premier League clash, Brighton won 3-1 away to south coast rivals Bournemouth.

Second division Derby, managed by former England midfielder Frank Lampard, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Southampton.

Newcastle were also held to a draw, 1-1 against second-tier Blackburn.

Premier League leaders Liverpool will complete a third round that started with Tottenham's 7-0 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday when they travel to top-flight rivals Wolves on Monday.

Manchester City score seven in FA Cup stroll, Oldham knock out Fulham

Huddersfield Town have signed midfielder Jason Puncheon on loan from Crystal Palace for the rest of the season, the Premier League clubs said on Friday.

Puncheon has struggled for game time at Palace this season, making five substitute appearances in the league and starting three League Cup games, but Huddersfield manager David Wagner backed the versatile 32-year-old to hit the ground running.

"It's important our additions in January have the ability to arrive and make an immediate impact in our team, which I'm sure Jason can," Wagner said.

"He's played in this division for nearly a decade now and knows what it takes to be successful... as well as being a very good player, he's a great character."

Huddersfield are bottom of the standings with 10 points from 21 matches and Wagner believes the former Southampton, Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers player will add much-needed experience in their quest to remain in the top division.

"He's been the captain of Palace and is a real leader in the dressing room, which is something we wanted to add too," the German manager added.

"He's now totally fit after the knee injury that he suffered last season and he's been very keen to come here and show that he is still capable of performing at the top level, which is great news for us."

Huddersfield sign Puncheon on loan from Crystal Palace

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he will be judged on playing style rather than trophies if he is to land the Manchester United manager's job on a full-time basis.

Solskjaer, appointed as interim boss last month to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho, has made clear that he would love to stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season, when his temporary arrangement is set to expire.

The former United striker, on a managerial loan from Norwegian club Molde, has not spoken to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about a longer stay.

However, he feels that the key to being seen as a success is to return to the attractive, attacking football that the club played for much of Alex Ferguson's near 27-year reign as manager.

Ferguson won 38 trophies before retiring in 2013 but his United team were also renowned for their positive football, which many fans felt went missing in the final year of Mourinho's reign.

Solskjaer, when asked what would constitute success and improve his chances of getting the job permanently, said: "If we get to the summer and people are talking about the way Manchester United are playing.

"If the style we're playing, it reminds us of Sir Alex's team, if it reminds us of the successful times."

Solskjaer said he is keen to win trophies this season but suggested that the style, for now, was more important.

"It has to start with the way we play because results you cannot control," he said. "You can control how you approach the game and how you play.

Trophy hunt

"And of course, it's about trophies -- if you can get to the final of the FA Cup and get a trophy. Let's see in May if it's a success or not."

Solskjaer has won his first four matches at the helm, including a 2-0 victory at Newcastle on Wednesday, and hopes to extend that run when Championship strugglers Reading visit Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Saturday.

However, he expects there to be setbacks as he attempts to improve United's Premier League position from sixth over the second half of the season.

"When you win games of football, you're happy," he said. "There will be tougher times coming, there will be tougher games coming up, we know that.

"I thought the Newcastle game was a great example of us not just getting the first goal and sitting back to counter. We had to work for it and defend."

One of Solskjaer's priorities is to improve the players' fitness, something he plans to work on when he takes his squad to Dubai for a warm-weather training break after the Reading match.

The former United striker said that high-intensity fitness training was a key part of United's success under Ferguson, allowing them to build momentum late in the season when chasing trophies.

"We can get fitter and we have to do that through the training sessions here but Dubai is a good chance because now is the first time we get a week of work together," he said.

"I still have pictures in my mind every January, the gaffer (Ferguson) with the stopwatch timing us -- all of those runs," he added.

"That stood us in good stead towards the end of the season, so it is a time to work hard. Even though we've got plenty of games, we need to work."

Things we learned from Manchester City vs Liverpool

The four-point lead Liverpool have at the top of the Premier League even after a 2-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City on Thursday was still impressive given their lack of title-winning experience, according to manager Juergen Klopp.

The match in Manchester was billed by many as an early title decider, where a Liverpool victory would have given them a 10-point lead at the top with 17 games to go, having played City home and away.

However, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, either side of a Robert Firmino equaliser, ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League season and moved City to within touching distance of top spot.

"I have so much faith in players you cannot imagine," Klopp said. "If somebody would have said after both games against Man City that we would have had a four point lead I would have paid good money for this, as I thought it was not possible.

"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, then things would be different. We don't have the experience like this. We are still in a very good position so I have happy for this.

"I knew that City could beat us, that is not new. They beat us 5-0 last year. It did not have anything to do with mental strength on one side or the other. It was just unlucky."

Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Mohamed Salah, a decision Klopp was not in agreement with.

"I loved him (Kompany) already when he was at Hamburg," Klopp added. "But situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. If Mo (Salah) is on his feet, not jumping, then we all know what happen. Mo can go through. I don't blame anybody.

"We were here last season there was a red card (against Mane), and nobody thought about it. Yes it was red card, but did he want it? He did not even see him? Kompany saw him, hit him, and you can make your own opinion."

It was just unlucky." Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Mohamed Salah, a decision Klopp was not in agreement with. "I loved him (Kompany) already when he was at Hamburg," Klopp added. "But situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. Juergen Klopp says he would have paid for four point lead over Manchester City

Manchester City topped Liverpool 2-1 in a thriller but City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that his clubs's title challenge could have come to an end on Thursday.

Sergio Aguero put City in front just before the break only for Roberto Firmino to level midway though the second half before Leroy Sane struck the winner in the 72nd minute.

After winning the match, Guardiola hailed his "incredible" squad as the champions cut the gap at the top to four points.

"It's a good moment to congratulate, to say thank you to these incredible players for what they have done in 16 months, and today they show(ed) for everybody how good they are, which hurt they play, against an incredible team," he told reporters.

He further added, "I think it was a good spectacle and both teams played to win, and nothing - so it's not a final, it was a final for us because losing today (the title race) was almost over, and winning today we are already there so now the Premier League is tight again so we'll see what happens in the future, relax, rest because in three days we have another big test in the FA Cup."

Pep Guardiola's reaction after Manchester City defeat leaders Liverpool 2-1

The 11-centimetre portion of the ball that Manchester City defender John Stones kept from crossing the goal line on a Liverpool chance in the first half turned out to be decisive here Thursday as the Premier League defending champions defeated the current leaders 2-1.

The match at Manchester's Etihad Stadium had the atmosphere and intensity of a final.

For Liverpool, it was not only the first loss of the Premier League season but it was also their first time conceding more than one goal.

City, meanwhile, delivered a brilliant performance after losing three of their last five Premier League matches and dropping to third place behind Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The result lifts City to second place with 50 points, 4 behind the Reds and 2 ahead of Spurs.

The play that may have decided the contest came in the 18th minute, as Mo Salah found Sadio Mane in the area with a deft pass and the Senegal international went for goal.

Mane's strike bounced off the post, but Stones' attempt to clear collided with goalkeeper Ederson and the ball bounced back toward the goal as Salah was closing in.

Stones somehow managed to get his foot to the ball before it completely crossed the line. The goal-line technology system found that all but 11cm of the ball made it over the line.

Five minutes before the break, Sergio Agüero scored from a seemingly impossible angle to give City a 1-0 lead and set off pandemonium at the Etihad.

Roberto Firmino brought the visitors level in the 64th minute, heading in unmarked from the far post on a cross from Andrew Robertson.

A re-energized Liverpool looked set to take command until the 72nd minute when a City counter led to a beautiful goal by Leroy Sane to put the hosts ahead to stay.

A Chelsea fan has been banned from football matches for three years after being ejected from their Premier League game against Brighton for shouting homophobic abuse.

The 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to the offence of using threatening, abusive or insulting words during Chelsea's 2-1 win at Brighton's Amex Stadium on December 16.

As a result, the fan has been banned and fined £965 ($1219).

A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Albion said in a statement: "We would like to thank Sussex Police for their assistance in dealing with this unsavoury incident, and we are very pleased with the outcome.

"It underlines both their and our commitment to a zero tolerance policy on any form of abuse from those attending matches at the Amex. We would remind all fans that we will not tolerate any form of abusive behaviour at the stadium and will always take the strongest possible action."

N'Golo Kante insists he is finally growing into his new role in Chelsea's midfield as the France star prepares for Wednesday's clash with Southampton.

Kante earned a reputation as the world's best defensive midfielder after playing a key role in Chelsea and Leicester's Premier League title triumphs, as well as France's World Cup victory.

But the 27-year-old has had to adapt to a change of position this season under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri, who replaced Antonio Conte in the close-season, brought Jorginho with him from Napoli to play the pivotal midfield role in front of the defence that used to be Kante's domain.

Sarri believes Jorginho's superior passing makes him more suited to launching Chelsea's attacks than Kante, who is now operating in a slightly more advanced role on the right of midfield.

Kante has sometimes looked out of sorts in his different position this season, but he showed signs of getting to grips with it on Sunday, scoring the winner at Crystal Palace with a well-timed run and cool finish.

"This role is something I am enjoying and in a game I try to make that run sometimes," Kante said.

"David (Luiz) gave me a good ball and I am happy to score with my left foot and give something to the team."

Away wins at Watford and Palace made it a happy Christmas for Chelsea.

But with the Blues still trailing 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, their title ambitions have been put on the back burner as they focus on securing a place in next season's Champions League via a top four finish.

Currently in fourth place -- five points ahead of fifth placed Arsenal -- Sarri's side will be expected to consolidate that position against a Southampton team struggling to avoid relegation.

Yet Chelsea shouldn't be complacent after some inconsistent displays of late, including a surprise 1-0 defeat in their last home match against Leicester.

Work in progress

They could be hampered by fitness problems, with Olivier Giroud, Cesc Fabregas, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi all suffering injuries over Christmas.

Sarri has questioned Chelsea's mental strength and cutting edge at various times this season and it would be no surprise to see new faces arrive in the January transfer window.

Blues defender David Luiz admits Chelsea are still a work in progress, but he believes Sarri's philosophy is starting to take hold.

"It's the connection, training together every day, understanding the philosophy and trying to improve," Luiz said.

In their first match of 2019, Chelsea are keen to banish the spectre of anti-semitic chants from a section of their support after they were criticised for an offensive song about Tottenham fans during recent matches.

Sarri slammed the "stupid" people involved and the club have vowed to take action against the offenders.

The chant has a long history with Chelsea supporters and the issue is complicated by Tottenham fans also singing the offensive word themselves.

Southampton are outside the bottom three only on goal difference after losing successive home matches last week.

They will be without suspended captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at Stamford Bridge after his red card against Manchester City.

"We will miss him, he's our best midfielder at the club," Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said.

N'Golo Kante growing into new role with Chelsea

The re-born Paul Pogba scored twice, for the second time since Jose Mourinho's departure from the club, as Manchester United beat Bournemouth 4-1 to make it three wins in a row for caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After emphatic wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, the manner of the victory was further evidence of the return of attacking football under Solskjaer and of the liberated way in which the players are performing.

None seem to be relishing their football again more than World Cup winner Pogba, who has netted four of the 12 goals that rejuvenated United have scored in the three matches since their former Norwegian striker took the reins.

It took Pogba just five minutes to strike for sixth-placed United, sliding the ball in at the back post after a wonderful piece of dribbling and a precise low cross from Marcus Rashford.

The Frenchman, who scored twice against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day, then burst into the box to head home an Ander Herrera cross from deep to make it 2-0.

"It is different, we still won games with the old manager but it is just a different style of playing," said Pogba.

"We are more offensive and we are creating more chances and that is how we want to play. I always want to do more, but I want to play for the team and play simple."

Not only was Pogba appearing in more advanced positions but he looked back to his confident self on the ball, strutting while in possession and constantly looking to create.

There was real class about United's third, in the 45th minute, as Anthony Martial delivered a low cross with the outside of his boot and Rashford guided it home off the outside of his outstretched foot.

Bournemouth pulled a goal back in stoppage-time at the end of the first half though when David Brooks skipped around the United defence and placed a cross on the head of Nathan Ake who nodded past David De Gea.

Romelu Lukaku made it 4-1, two minutes after coming on as a 70th-minute substitute, latching on to a Pogba through ball and hooking the ball past the advancing Asmir Begovic.

Pogba was inches away from a hat-trick with a low drive from 20 yards out that struck the post.

The relaxed and positive mood was slightly undone by a wild lunge in the 79th minute from United defender Eric Bailly on Ryan Fraser, with the Ivorian rightly being shown a straight red card.

"In the first half we attacked the game with a high tempo and high energy but the response to their goal was great. We managed the game much better than against Huddersfield," said Solskjaer.

"We are still looking for a clean sheet - you can't switch off for one second in this league.

"It's a very very good performance, the crowd was enjoying it but now Newcastle, the next one, is a different kind of test."

Paul Pogba doubles again as Solskjaer extends perfect start

Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday.

Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.

David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.

For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.

Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.

But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.

Austin's first touch, however, was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.

Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.

The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.

Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.

And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.

But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.

Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.

City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.

And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.

And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.

In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.

Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.

Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Manchester City stop the rot against Southampton

Chelsea kept up their pursuit of the Premier League's top three clubs with a 1-0 win away to London rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday, thanks to a strike by N'Golo Kante early in the second half.

Chelsea had to work hard to break down Palace who had taken seven points in their previous three matches, including a shock win over champions Manchester City, but seemed content to allow their visitors most of the possession.

After a sterile first 35 minutes, Willian smacked the post with a swinging free-kick and Ross Barkley hit the same upright soon afterwards with an acrobatic overhead effort.

Kante broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when his darting run into the Palace penalty area was spotted by defender David Luiz who fed the France World Cup winner to score from close range.

Palace substitute Connor Wickham spurned the hosts' best chance of the game when he toe-punted a shot over the bar in the dying minutes.

Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League, one point behind Manchester City -- who were playing later on Sunday -- and two points adrift of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, but 11 behind leaders Liverpool. Crystal Palace remain in 14th spot.

The win also gave Chelsea an important five-point cushion over Arsenal, their nearest challengers for the fourth Champions League spot who were hammered 5-1 by Liverpool on Saturday.

"It is never easy to play here or control it here especially when they (Palace) play long balls but we did well. We could have scored early but they also did a great match defensively which is why it was so difficult," Chelsea's Luiz told reporters.

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud had two goals ruled out for offside and then was forced off injured.

Coach Maurizio Sarri said the Frenchman had an ankle problem which looked set to rule him out of Wednesday's game against Southampton and adds to the team's fitness problems, particularly in attack with Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Ruben Loftus Cheek also currently sidelined.

"We played against a dangerous opponent so we had to have possession, we played well in the first 45 minutes and even better in the second half, the only thing I didn't like is that we didn't kill the match off," added the Italian.

"That meant it was hard to defend the match in the box in the final minutes."

"After our goal, I think we started well. At the beginning we are good positioning, but after our goal they push it and when they push it here, they play with great determination and they have players to make the difference in all the pitch, but especially in our box.

Emery added, "They scored two, three quick goals and it's a difficult moment for us but we spoke in the dressing room, it's another experience for us. Bad experience, to learn."

Liverpool thrash Arsenal 5-1 to widen lead in Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur's status as Premier League title chasers was seriously harmed on Saturday as they fell to a first defeat in seven league games, losing the lead to go down 3-1 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Harry Kane fired a largely unimpressive Spurs side in front midway through the first half, picking the ball up from deep out wide, cutting inside and finding the top corner from outside the area with a sumptuous strike on his weaker left foot.

The goal was Kane's fourth in three league games but was not enough to see off the dogged visitors, who have taken points off some of the biggest teams such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in their return to the top flight.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side levelled in the 72nd minute with a towering header from a corner from French defender Willy Boly after a period of sustained pressure around Tottenham's area.

Mexican forward Raul Jimenez then gave them the lead in the 83rd minute on the break, squeezing a perfectly struck shot under the diving Hugo Lloris and into the bottom corner. Helder Costa sealed the win with another counter-attack goal in the 87th.

A first home defeat since late October leaves second-placed Tottenham six points adrift of Liverpool, who can widen that gap when they host Arsenal later on Saturday. Manchester City could move second if they win at Southampton on Sunday.

"We decided the game was over"

Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino criticised his side for easing off in the second half and assuming they had the victory wrapped up.

"In the second half we decided that the game was over and when you start to think that you run into problems," he told a news conference.

"We dominated possession in the first half then we missed that freshness to kill the game, instead we tried to manage it at 1-0. We know from experience that if you aren't at 100 percent in every game this can happen, it's not enough to play well for 60 or 70 minutes, you have to do it for 90."

Wolves coach Nuno said he would have been happy to settle for a draw but praised his side for their hunger in searching for the win.

"We had a lot of belief after the equaliser, I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them," he said.

"It is good for the dressing room but to play like this at Wembley, the home of football, is the big thing."

Mauricio Pochettino dismisses Spurs title talk after Wolves defeat

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has urged the club to "solve the problem" of Eden Hazard's future, amid speculation that the Belgian winger will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Hazard, who has one-and-a-half years remaining on his Chelsea deal, said he will not make a decision on his long-term future until the end of the campaign, which did nothing to stop the persistent rumours linking him to Real Madrid.

Asked what he thought Hazard would do, Sarri told a news conference on Friday: "I don't know. I speak to him only about the position on the pitch. But I think that it's time to decide.

"I think we have to solve the problem. If we want to plan the future, we have to solve this problem."

Hazard boasts a hand in 19 Premier League goals this season, more than any other player, and was again on the scoresheet with a brace in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Watford on Boxing Day.

While Hazard prefers to play on the wing, Sarri has used him in a central "false-nine" role during the last few matches and may do so again for Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace.

With strikers Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata struggling to score on a regular basis, the Italian manager expects Hazard to shoulder most of the goalscoring responsibility.

"He played four matches as false number nine, and he scored three goals and two assists," Sarri said.

"I am really very happy with him in this position, because he's very able to score, first of all, but he's very able to open spaces for the team mates, to come and play with the team mates.

"But in the future he can also play as a winger of course."

Sarri also ruled out Pedro for at least 10 days with a hamstring problem.

The Spanish forward picked up the injury in the first half at Vicarage Road and was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has been nursing a hamstring problem of his own and was taken off in the 85th minute.

"We have two problems, the first more serious with Pedro," Sarri said. "A hamstring injury and I think that he will have to rest for about 10 days.

"The second problem was Odoi, it's not as serious but I don't think he will play in the next match."

A superb brace by Felipe Anderson gave West Ham United a 2-1 comeback win at Southampton in a pulsating Premier League match on Thursday.

The result lifted West Ham to ninth in the table on 27 points from 19 games while Southampton stayed 16th on 15 points, three above the relegation zone after suffering their first home defeat in five matches.

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini was delighted to see his team in the top half of the standings midway through the campaign after starting with four defeats.

"All the credit (to the players)," he told the BBC.

"We played a very good game from the first minute to win it and we were very balanced. We worked mostly in the opposition half and we defended very well.

"December has been a good month for the team, not just for me, for the team. I think one of the most important things is that we play the same way away as at home."

The game sprung to life when Southampton forward Nathan Redmond bundled the ball home with his shoulder in the 50th minute after visiting keeper Lukazs Fabianski parried his initial shot and Oriol Romeu's rebound.

In the absence of first-choice strikers Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, West Ham lacked cutting edge until Brazilian midfielder Anderson turned the match on its head.

Anderson equalised in the 53rd minute with a stinging first-time shot from 20 metres and completed West Ham's comeback in the 59th when he buried the ball into the top right corner from 13 metres to cap a lightning break by the visitors.

Fabianski had kept out a long-range effort by forward Stuart Armstrong at the other end and marshalled his defence superbly in the closing stages as the Saints threw men forward in search of an equaliser.

The West Ham keeper clawed out Mario Lemina's shot while livewire Anderson twice went close for West Ham in a see-saw last 15 minutes, with Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl left to rue a missed chance to steer clear of the bottom three.

"If you give it away like we did then you don't deserve to (win)," he said.

"We were not so fresh and not so speedy, sharp to win the second balls. The way we lost today was too easy."
