Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made an instant impact as Manchester United caretaker manager with Paul Pogba to the fore in a transformed performance from the final days of Jose Mourinho's reign in a 5-1 thumping of Cardiff on Saturday.

Solskjaer has been put in charge until the end of the season after Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday and could not have asked for a better start in the Welsh capital thanks to Marcus Rashford's third-minute free-kick.

The visitors also had a slice of fortune when Ander Herrera's strike deflected in to double their advantage.

But United shrugged off Victor Camarasa's penalty, awarded for a dubious handball call on Rashford, with the sort of free-flowing play that appeared so scarcely under Mourinho as Anthony Martial started and finished a fine move also including Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

And Lingard struck twice more in the second half to secure United's biggest win of the season so far.

As well as getting Solskjaer off to a flying start, victory also sees United crucially close the gap on the Premier League top four to eight points thanks to Chelsea's 1-0 home defeat by Leicester earlier in the day.

Pogba was forced to watch the full 90 minutes from the bench last weekend as Liverpool inflicted the final blow to Mourinho's time in charge with a 3-1 win that left United 19 points off the top after just 17 games.

The French World Cup-winner was restored from the start for the first time in four league games and looked far more like the player United splashed a then world-record £89 million ($113 million) on in 2016 than the one that clashed with his former boss off the field and disappointed on it for much of the past two seasons.

Rashford gives United perfect start

It was Pogba who was felled on the edge of the Cardiff area early on and he stepped over the ball for Rashford to take aim with a dipping effort that deceived home goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and nestled in his bottom left-hand corner.

Solskjaer won only three of his 18 Premier League games in charge of Cardiff during an ill-fated spell that ended with relegation in 2014.

But a winning return to Wales rarely looked in doubt thereafter as the visiting fans enthusiastically chanted the Norwegian's name throughout.

The travelling hordes were enjoying their side moving the ball around with a speed and accuracy more reminiscent of Solskjaer's days as a player at Old Trafford when United dominated English football.

Pogba was at the heart of it and his intelligent pass picked out Herrera, whose shot flicked off Greg Cunningham to loop over the helpless Etheridge.

If Solskjaer's side were fortunate then, it was Cardiff who got a break nine minutes later when the assistant referee adjudged Rashford to have handled rather than control the ball with his shoulder inside the area.

Camarasa's perfectly-taken penalty could have sparked a collapse for a team short on confidence in recent times.

Instead, United responded resoundingly with a fantastic team goal as a quick interchange of passes between Pogba and Lingard freed Martial to score his ninth goal of the season.

Lingard took responsibility from the spot just before the hour mark after another soft penalty was awarded for a foul by Sol Bamba on the England international.

And the England international was the beneficiary of another defence-splitting pass from Pogba a minute from time as he rounded Etheridge and slotted into an empty net.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes instant impact as Manchester United thrash Cardiff

Manchester City suffered their first home Premier League loss in eight months as a shock 3-2 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday left Pep Guardiola's champions trailing leaders Liverpool by four points.

City, who had won all nine home games in the league this season, are in second place on 44 points with Liverpool, who won 2-0 at Wolves on Friday, on 48.

Two defeats in three games for City, who lost at Chelsea a fortnight ago, have given Juergen Klopp's Liverpool the upper hand in the title race and turned the Jan. 3 clash between the sides at the Etihad into a real showdown.

City, sorely missing injured midfielder David Silva, looked ragged and panicked at times, but Palace and their manager Roy Hodgson deserve huge credit for a magnificent performance which included a brilliant goal by Andros Townsend.

Many teams better than Palace have been unable to find the recipe for beating Guardiola's side but the London side took their chances and defended resiliently to secure a victory that belies their 14th place in the table.

"Obviously, the result is a setback. We have lost but we are only looking at ourselves game to game," said City captain Fabian Delph.

"We had a few chances which we have put away in the past, but fair play to Crystal Palace - they were stubborn and organised.

"It's hard to analyse and we will go back to the drawing board and look at it," added the England full back.

It seemed to be business as usual for City after German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan nodded them in front in the 27th minute, meeting a Fabian Delph cross from deep with a firm, downward header.

But Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner and Townsend stunned the Etihad Stadium with a sensational volley that will surely be a goal of the season contender.

Bernardo Silva's header out was met first time by Townsend who blasted his volley from 30 metres past helpless City keeper Ederson who could do nothing about the perfect combination of technique and power from the former Spurs and Newcastle player.

The air of surprise at the Etihad turned to panic in the 51st minute when Palace went 3-1 up through a Luka Milivojevic penalty after Kyle Walker brought down Max Meyer with a wild challenge.

Guardiola brought on substitutes Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne and it was the Belgian midfielder who gave the home side hope with a cross-shot in the 85th minute that caught out Palace keeper Vicente Guaita.

Gabriel Jesus missed a stoppage-time chance when he headed over a De Bruyne cross from a promising position but City were left to taste their first home league loss since the Manchester derby on April 7.

Roy Hodgson's Palace had picked up just one point from their last six away games and had not won at City since 1990.

Manchester City stunned by Crystal Palace, trail Liverpool by four points

Chelsea suffered their first home defeat since April as Jamie Vardy fired Leicester to a shock 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Maurizio Sarri's side paid the price for failing to convert their chances when Vardy netted early in the second half to hand the Blues their first defeat in five games.

Chelsea's disjointed display surrendered an 18-match unbeaten run at the Bridge dating back to Tottenham's victory in April.

Sarri has insisted he does not expect Chelsea to challenge for the title this season, the Italian rating Liverpool and Manchester City as "two steps ahead" of the Blues.

This was further evidence to support Sarri's concerns, with Chelsea left trailing 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League, but they are now above fifth-placed Arsenal only on goal difference, leaving them facing a tense bid to qualify for the Champions League in the second half of the season.

Leicester's first win at Chelsea since September 2000 was well-timed for Foxes boss Claude Puel, who has endured recent reports he could be sacked just 14 months after he arrived from Southampton.

Chelsea almost took the lead in bizarre fashion after just two minutes when David Luiz launched a long ball towards Willian.

Luiz's pass bounced on the edge of the Leicester area, prompting Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel to rush off his line, but when neither he or Willian could make contact, the ball bounced just wide of the empty net.

Pedro was inches away from putting Chelsea in front when he met Willian's corner with a glancing header that flashed wide as Luiz stretched in vain to turn it in.

But despite their territorial dominance, Chelsea's passing and movement wasn't precise or fast enough to prise Leicester open.

Thunderous

Significantly, Hazard was again deployed up front as Sarri continued with the experiment of using the Belgian playmaker as a 'false nine'.

Hazard has been less than effusive in his thoughts about the role so far, dropping hints that he would prefer to return to his usual wide position.

He remains by far Chelsea's most dangerous player wherever he lines up, but there is little doubt his best performances come on the flanks.

Hazard had been the midweek League Cup match-winner against Bournemouth and he should have bagged his 100th Chelsea goal after pouncing on a slip from Leicester's Harry Maguire for a fierce close-range shot that cannoned off the bar.

It was a crucial moment.

Ndidi's thunderous long-range drive forced Kepa Arrizabalaga to make a fine save before Jorginho produced a powerful effort of his own that Schmeichel punched away.

Not for the first time this season, Chelsea's miscues in attack proved fatal.

Showing the cutting edge that Sarri's team lacked, Leicester punished a moment's loss of concentration to snatch the lead in the 51st minute.

James Maddison slipped a perfect pass to Vardy, who escaped Cesar Azpilicueta before burying a cool finish past Kepa for his sixth goal of the season.

It was the first time Chelsea had conceded a goal at home in six matches and inevitably they turned to Hazard for inspiration.

Beating Leicester's offside trap, Hazard cut in from the left for a stinging strike that Schmeichel blocked at his near post.

Sarri responded by sending on Olivier Giroud and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, allowing Hazard to return to the left wing.

But Leicester were defending superbly and Chelsea's luck was out in stoppage-time when Marcos Alonso's shot hit a post and rolled along the goalline to safety.

Jamie Vardy strikes as Leicester stun Chelsea

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.

The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.

Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.

Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.

Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says playmaker Mesut Ozil is needed at the club and would be part of their squad to face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-record 42 million pounds ($53 million), has been left out of the side regularly in the last two months, at first due to a back sprain and then - according to Emery - because of the physicality of some opponents.

The 30-year-old was not in the squad for the 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday when Emery repeatedly refused to say that he wanted to hold on to the German playmaker when questioned about his future.

The Spanish coach was more positive about Ozil in a news conference on Friday, however, with fifth-placed Arsenal looking to rebound from the Spurs loss and a 3-2 defeat by struggling Southampton in the league last weekend.

"I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality. We need Mesut Ozil," Emery said, before adding that the player has a future in the team.

"Every player wants to play and be okay to help the team when we need. The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn’t play in a match," he added.

"But I spoke with him and with the regularity in the season, I am telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us when the team needs his moments in the pitch in one game.

"Tomorrow he is in the 18 players, in the squad."

Ozil's contract is due to run until 2021, yet British media have reported the club may let him leave in January. The midfielder is one of the most expensive players on the payroll, earning a reported 350,000 pounds a week.

Arsenal have three matches before the transfer window opens as the packed festive schedule gets underway.

After their home match against Burnley, they visit Brighton & Hove Albion on Boxing Day before travelling to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool three days later.

Ozil could get his big chance to impress Emery against Burnley as the manager revealed Armenian attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not be fit for the clash. Left back Sead Kolasinac is available after he recovered from a thigh injury.

'We need Ozil,' says Arsenal coach Unai Emery

Juergen Klopp said his Liverpool side may need to surpass Manchester City's record points total to win the Premier League after a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday guaranteed them top spot at Christmas.

Goals by Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were enough to take Liverpool four points clear of champions Manchester City who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Liverpool, who have topped the Premier League table on three previous occasions without winning the title, have 48 points from 18 games and only two teams -- Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season -- have had more points at that stage.

City won the title last season with a record 100 points but such has been the pace at the top this season that Klopp believes even more might be needed this time.

"Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league, but was it ever such a tight race?" Klopp said.

"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.

"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win, then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points from one down to five.

"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know!" he added.

Tottenham Hotspur, in third place, have 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea are on 37 before their home clash with Leicester City.

Liverpool's title challenge has been built on a rock-solid defence which has been breached only seven times in the League so far this season with Van Dijk outstanding.

The Dutchman even proved effective at the other end of the pitch on a rainy night in the Midlands as he scored his first Premier League goal to double Liverpool's lead.

"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," Van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I’m more focussed on winning games."

We might need 105 points to win title, says Juergen Klopp

Manchester United's caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday that he wanted to "get the players enjoying their football" after he returned to Old Trafford following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

United have turned to their former Norway international striker Solskjaer on a deal until the end of the season to inject some life into what has been a fraught campaign.

The club parted company with Mourinho on Tuesday with the club in the sixth spot in the Premier League having made their worst start to a season for 28 years, culminating in a limp 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Mourinho's final few months in charge were dominated by media reports of his falling out with the club's 90 million pounds ($114 million) France midfielder Paul Pogba while his side laboured on the pitch playing dull defensive football.

Solskjaer, who as a player was part of United's era of dominance under Alex Ferguson and scored the goal that secured an unprecedented treble almost 20 years ago, wants to return a feel-good factor to their under-performing squad.

"I am just going to be myself... get the players enjoying their football and looking forward to seeing the supporters again," Solskjaer, 45, told MUTV on Thursday in his first interview as caretaker boss.

"We are in a results business and we want to win games and that is my job. We just want to see them play the football they can."

Solskjaer, who has left his role as manager of Norwegian club Molde, said the busy upcoming schedule of matches would give all of his squad a chance to impress him.

Their game on Saturday at Cardiff City, where Solskjaer was briefly manager in 2014, begins a run of five in 15 days.

“The amount of games coming up is no problem because we’ve got an amazing squad, we’ve got 23-24 players,” Solskjaer said.

We just want to see them play the football they can." Solskjaer, who has left his role as manager of Norwegian club Molde, said the busy upcoming schedule of matches would give all of his squad a chance to impress him. Their game on Saturday at Cardiff City, where Solskjaer was briefly manager in 2014, begins a run of five in 15 days. “The amount of games coming up is no problem because we’ve got an amazing squad, we’ve got 23-24 players,” Solskjaer said. “They are all quality and they’ll all get a chance now with the amount of games coming up. Arsenal said Thursday they have identified a man they suspect of throwing a plastic bottle at Tottenham's Dele Alli during Spurs' 2-0 League Cup quarter-final victory over their bitter North London rivals.

The England midfielder - who scored a delightful goal to put Spurs 2-0 up at the Emirates - was hit on the head as he took a throw-in in the second half.

Arsenal said in a statement that the club had been "embarrassed" by the incident, promising the individual concerned would face a lengthy ban.

The club statement said that the suspect left the stadium immediately after throwing the bottle at Alli in the 73rd minute of the match but an image of him has been found by analysing CCTV footage of the crowd.

"We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit," the club added.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised 22-year-old Alli for the control he showed during the incident.

"It was an amazing reaction," he told reporters on Thursday.

"In another country the player was going to be down on the pitch. Dele behaved really well. Arsenal should be grateful to him because the player could have gone down and created a massive problem."

And the Spurs boss said he did not think Arsenal should be punished.

Earlier this week a Tottenham fan was handed a four-year football banning order after throwing a banana skin towards Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when the teams met in an acrimonious clash at the Emirates on December 2.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players in that Premier League derby, which Arsenal won 4-2.

Both sets of players were involved in a fracas after Eric Dier celebrated his goal in front of Arsenal's substitutes.

Spurs have been fined £50,000 ($63,000), with Arsenal receiving a £45,000 ($57,000) sanction.

Manchester United had not lost to Liverpool in the Premier League for eight games and over four years prior to Sunday's 3-1 defeat, but the current chasm between the two sides was exposed as Jose Mourinho's men fell 19 points behind the league leaders at Anfield.

Match-going United fans have been reluctant to turn on Mourinho, instead often pointing fingers at executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's reluctance to back the manager in the transfer market this summer or the club's American owners, the Glazer family.

However, by the end of proceedings on Sunday, as two deflected Xherdan Shaqiri strikes in the final 17 minutes sealed a thoroughly deserved victory for the hosts, it was Liverpool fans who sarcastically sang "don't sack Mourinho".

The Portuguese coach said he accepted responsibility for a fifth defeat of the season that leaves the 20-time champions of England 11 points adrift of even a top-four finish.

But he also pointed the finger at what he described as "permanently injured" players and claimed both sides played "in relation to their qualities".

That does not say much for Mourinho's management as despite Liverpool spending more than any other Premier League club this summer to mount a title challenge, United's transfer spend under Mourinho in recent years still dwarfs that of any side other than champions Manchester City.

"Not one of the United midfielders can pass a football," said former United captain Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

"Not one of them. I find it staggering. United were awful."

Wasted millions

The wasted millions that have led United to this position were laid bare at Anfield as Paul Pogba, who cost a then world-record £89 million ($112 million) in 2016, was left on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Another near £100 million of attacking talent in Juan Mata and Anthony Martial also started on the sidelines, while £50 million close-season signing Fred did not even make an injury-hit matchday squad.

"If you came down from the moon today and knew nothing about football you'd say United are an average Premier League side," said another former United captain Roy Keane in a withering assessment of the Red Devils' predicament.

"They are Manchester United of the 1980s, they can be a decent cup team."

Liverpool dominated United, England and most of Europe in the 80s, but have not won a league title since 1990.

An end to nearly three decades of hurt could be in sight, though, as victory took Jurgen Klopp's men back to the top of the table, a point clear of City.

As Klopp bounded onto the field to hug his players and rouse the home fans in one final celebration after the final whistle, the German epitomised the differing mood at the two clubs personified by their managers.

Mourinho had successfully parked the bus to come away from Anfield with 0-0 draws in each of the two previous seasons.

Yet, this United side are not even capable of mastering that gameplan anymore with a defence that has conceded 29 goals in 17 Premier League games.

United must now watch their two fiercest rivals battle it out for the title, while already a top-four finish looks like a tall order for Mourinho's men.

Ultimately, it was failure to qualify for the Champions League that cost Mourinho's predecessors Louis van Gaal and David Moyes their jobs.

The same fate is likely to meet Mourinho, despite extending his contract to 2020 earlier this year.

"Will Mourinho leave? I think it will happen," added Neville, who reserved much of the blame for Woodward and the board.

"Nobody above him can handle him. They don't know what to do with him, they don't know what to say to him. They don't know what he's going to say at every press conference.

Jose Mourinho running out of time at Manchester United?

Crystal Palace moved five points clear of the bottom three in the Premier League when Luka Milivojevic scored to give the south London club a 1-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.

Roy Hodgson's side had suffered a nightmare spell in the top flight, winning just one of their previous 11 Premier League games, but they broke the Wilfried Zaha curse by triumphing for the first time in 14 games without their influential forward.

Leicester had the ball in the Palace net after 27 minutes but Jamie Vardy's effort was disallowed.

The former England striker made the most of a poor touch from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita on his Premier League debut and slotted the ball into the back of the net but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.

Leicester were made to pay as Milivojevic put Palace into the lead after 39 minutes with a stunning strike.

The Serbian midfielder picked up the ball 25 metres from goal and fired a powerful shot which flew past Kasper Schmeichel into the top left-hand corner.

Another Vardy shot was kept out after 79 minutes. Kelechi Iheanacho fed the ball into the path of the Leicester forward who, from a tight angle, looked to have equalised but his effort was pushed on to the inside of the post by Guaita and back into the arms of the Palace keeper.

Crystal Palace beat Leicester City to earn crucial points

Liverpool may be top of the Premier League but Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said that it is trophies in the cabinet that count ahead of the sides' showdown at Anfield on Sunday.

Klopp's side remain the only unbeaten team in the league this season, but the German has yet to clinch an honour in his three years on Merseyside.

United languish 16 points behind their rivals in sixth place, but Mourinho led the Old Trafford outfit to Europa League and League Cup victories in his first season in Manchester in 2017.

"I think trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy," the Portuguese told a news conference on Friday.

"I think Juergen told already they want to win the Premier League, is their objective," he added.

United travel to their rivals with a depleted squad after their injury list grew in their 2-1 defeat by Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Marcos Rojo was forced off at halftime, joining the likes of Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez on the sidelines.

Defenders Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and attacker Anthony Martial were all due to be assessed in training on Friday having missed the trip to Spain. Yet the manager has said that Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young are all set to start at Anfield.

United's last two trips to Anfield have resulted in goalless draws after Mourinho adopted an ultra cautious approach, yet the Portuguese said his side are capable of fighting for victory despite their injuries.

"We know that we are going to play against the leaders, against a team on a high, but we have our qualities, we have our potential," he said.

"Even with the problems we have and the doubts in terms of team choice, of tactics, approach, philosophy, we have doubts about everything.

"We are going to arrive with the players we have available and going to have a team capable of going there and fight for the victory."

Liverpool are looking to pick up a sixth successive victory in the league. However, Klopp has yet to get the better of Mourinho's United having not beaten them since the Portuguese took charge in 2016, drawing three and losing once.

The fixture is never short of drama and Mourinho usually enjoys the big occasion as an underdog, as he showed in last month's impressive 2-1 victory over Juventus in Turin.

Trophies matter, insists Jose Mourinho ahead of Liverpool clash

The alleged racist abuse of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans has rekindled bitter memories for his club mate Ilkay Guendogan, who suffered similar treatment during the World Cup earlier this year.

Sterling was shouted at by supporters behind the goal in City's 2-0 Premier League defeat last Saturday and Chelsea later banned four fans from matches pending a police investigation.

Guendogan, who is of Turkish descent, said he can empathise, having faced jeers in warm-up games ahead of the World Cup after he and former international team mate Mesut Ozil were photographed with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil quit international soccer in July following Germany's group-stage exit in Russia citing "racism and disrespect", but Guendogan has continued to play for the national team.

"It's not easy because I lived it in the summer as well. I know how that feels and it hurts," Guendogan told reporters.

"This is obviously something that doesn't belong anywhere in the world ... we have no other choice but to stay strong and try to go through that period and try to do our best on the pitch. Yeah, to keep being successful, that's what matters."

Sterling, however, did not take the alleged abuse lying down and posted a statement on Instagram last Sunday in which he said newspapers were fuelling racism in soccer due to their negative portrayal of young black players.

His comments were echoed by the Professional Footballers' Association and former players.

"I think he (Sterling) got a lot of support this week," Guendogan said. "I think the way Chelsea reacted was good.

Ilkay Guendogan feels Man City team mate Sterling's pain

Maurizio Sarri has described the alleged racist abuse of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans as "disgusting" and condemned discrimination in any form in his first public comments on the incident.

Chelsea said on Monday they had banned four supporters from their matches pending a police investigation into the incident which occurred during City's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

"First of all, I want to say that I condemn any form of discrimination, of course. I think that I have to stop here," the Chelsea manager told reporters ahead of Thursday's Europa League match against Vidi in Budapest.

"Because there is an investigation so I think it's better not to say something more. Of course, my opinion is that I condemn every sort of discrimination.

"It was disgusting. You know very well my opinion, the opinion of the club, but now we have to go on."

One of the Chelsea supporters who has been banned admitted directing abuse at Sterling but said the vitriol was 'not racist in nature'.

Sterling's England teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek said a strong response was needed to rid the sport of the problem.

"It doesn't happen a lot in England, but obviously still happens. Most people don't like this and it needs to be out of the game as quick as possible," Loftus-Cheek said.

"He (Sterling) was right to say what he said. I don't think it should be in the game or anywhere. Him speaking out was the right thing. If it happened to me I would do the same."

Alleged racist abuse of Raheem Sterling 'disgusting', says Maurizio Sarri

The Professional Footballers' Association said Monday it stood "shoulder to shoulder" with Raheem Sterling after the Manchester City player suffered alleged racial abuse during his side's defeat against Chelsea.

Chelsea and the police are investigating the incident at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, which was highlighted on social media.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Sterling accused British newspapers of helping to "fuel racism" with the way they portray young black footballers.

Simone Pound, PFA head of equality and diversity, said: "Football is a microcosm of society and incidents such as this highlight the current political climate.

"Raheem has made a stand by speaking out and we stand shoulder to shoulder with him against the discrimination of which he speaks."

A statement from the organisation on Monday added: "The PFA condemn, in the strongest terms, the increase in racial abuse our members have been receiving from the terraces.

"We encourage all clubs to take the strongest possible action for fans found guilty of racially abusing players.

"We commend Raheem for his professionalism during the incident and the statement he made via Instagram on Sunday," it added.

"We stand with him in calling for the press to consider the coverage of all footballers carefully, and to end their imbalanced coverage aimed at young, black players."

In his Instagram post Sterling, 24, referred to a story from January about City teammate Tosin Adarabioyo reportedly buying an expensive house despite never having started a Premier League match.

"The young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an(d) aggressive behaviour," Sterling wrote.

"So for all the newspapers that don't understand why people are racist in this day and age all I have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an(d) give all players an equal chance."

The PFA was also critical of the media's portrayal of Sterling, who has previously faced negative publicity, often for non-football issues.

"We have been aware for a few months of the targeting Raheem faces in the press -- it is evident that he is often singled out and treated more harshly than his colleagues," its statement said.

"As such, these stories are fuelling racism within the game, as reports of racist abuse continue to rise."

"Raheem has made a stand by speaking out and we stand shoulder to shoulder with him against the discrimination of which he speaks." A statement from the organisation on Monday added: "The PFA condemn, in the strongest terms, the increase in racial abuse our members have been receiving from the terraces. "We encourage all clubs to take the strongest possible action for fans found guilty of racially abusing players. "We commend Raheem for his professionalism during the incident and the statement he made via Instagram on Sunday," it added. "We stand with him in calling for the press to consider the coverage of all footballers carefully, and to end their imbalanced coverage aimed at young, black players." In his Instagram post Sterling, 24, referred to a story from January about City teammate Tosin Adarabioyo reportedly buying an expensive house despite never having started a Premier League match. "The young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an(d) aggressive behaviour," Sterling wrote. "So for all the newspapers that don't understand why people are racist in this day and age all I have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an(d) give all players an equal chance." The PFA was also critical of the media's portrayal of Sterling, who has previously faced negative publicity, often for non-football issues. Chelsea launch investigation into racist abuse aimed at Raheem Sterling

Manchester City have fallen out of first place in the Premier League after suffering a 2-0 loss here Saturday to Chelsea in Matchday 16 action.

The Citizens controlled possession early on at Stamford Bridge and created a handful of chances, but Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga corralled a shot by Raheem Sterling in the ninth minute and blocked an attempt by Leroy Sane shortly after the half-hour mark.

Chelsea then stunned the visitors with a goal shortly before halftime by N'Golo Kante, who fired a shot into the roof of the goal off a pass from Belgian star Eden Hazard.

City continued to control possession in the second half but could not break down Chelsea's well-organized defense, a situation that only worsened when David Silva limped off the field with an injury.

The visitors ceded the reins of the contest after the Spanish midfielder's exit and ended up allowing the second goal at the 78-minute mark on a header off a corner kick by David Luiz.

Manchester City fall from top spot with 2-0 loss to Chelsea

Lucas Torreira scored with a bicycle kick in the 82nd minute to earn Arsenal a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town in a scrappy Premier League game on Saturday.

The Uruguayan leapt to volley the ball from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pass across the face of goal, securing all three points for the Gunners who otherwise only distinguished themselves by having three players booked for diving.

The first half was a comedy of errors for Arsenal, with strikers Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missing clear scoring opportunities and midfield lynchpin Granit Xhaka frequently passing the ball straight to the opposition.

Referee Paul Tierney dished out seven yellow cards in the half, and nine in the whole match. Arsenal's Xhaka, Shkodran Mustafi and Matteo Guendouzi were all booked for simulation.

Lacazette appeared to break the stalemate just before halftime, latching on to a sloppy backpass and sidestepping keeper Jonas Lossl to slot the ball into the net, only to be ruled offside. Lossl then tipped a Torreira shot from outside the area just over the bar.

Huddersfield, who have not beaten Arsenal since 1971, were unable to register a shot on goal.

In the end, it fell to a moment of acrobatics from the little Uruguayan to rob the visitors of a much-needed point.

Arsenal climbed to third in the table ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur's matches later on Saturday, while Huddersfield slipped back into the relegation zone, in 18th place.

Arsenal beat Huddersfield after Lucas Torreira's stunning goal

Manchester United earned their first Premier League win in five games with a comfortable 4-1 victory over bottom side Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

With record signing Paul Pogba on the bench once more, United wasted no time in finding their rhythm, as Ashley Young scored his first goal in all competitons for United since 2017 to break the deadlock in the 13th minute.

Juan Mata stroked home a second to score his 50th Premier League goal in the 28th minute, before Romelu Lukaku scored his first home goal since March to make it 3-0 before halftime.

Coming into the encounter with a negative goal difference, United were in need of a confidence-building performance and a contest against the Premier League's most porous defence was just what the doctor ordered.

Fulham remained under the cosh after the break but managed a consolation through Aboubakar Kamara's penalty.

But Andre-Frank Anguissa was sent off for Fulham before Marcus Rashford scored a fourth late on to complete a miserable afternoon for Claudio Ranieri's strugglers.

A first three points in the league since early November ensured United climbed to sixth, seven points off the top four, with Chelsea in fifth not in action until later on Saturday.

Fulham remain bottom, three points from the safety zone.

"The players have shown they can be a better team than they are," manager Jose Mourinho said. "At times it was beautiful football. The first half was perfect. We were really good. We needed it."

Lukaku's inclusion was one of four changes to the side that drew against Arsenal in midweek, meaning Mourinho has made 50 changes to his starting line-up already this season.

One of those other changes, Young, got the ball rolling, nutmegging his marker to slot home, before an equally fine finish from Mata saw him reach his goalscoring half century.

Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico was then called into a action once more, keeping out a fierce Rashford strike, before Mata cut the ball back for Lukuku to score his first Old Trafford goal in 997 minutes in all competitions.

"The first half was only Manchester United with powerful qualities," Ranieri said. "Second half was much better. We had the desire to do our best."

After the break, Ander Herrera missed a glorious chance to make it four, before the Spaniard felled Kamara in the box to concede a penalty, which Kamara converted with ease.

Anguissa's red card after earning his second yellow made things yet more difficult for Fulham, before Rashford completed the rout eight minutes from time, squeezing his effort in at the near post.

Manchester United crush Fulham for first league win in five games

Burnley earned a badly-needed three points to move out of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

On a rainy, windy afternoon at Turf Moor, nothing was going to wipe away the smiles of manager Sean Dyche and the Burnley fans as James Tarkowski's goal late in the first half proved decisive.

"I think it is a bit of relief, and enjoyment," Dyche, whose side had lost their last three fixtures at Turf Moor while conceding nine goals, told the BBC.

"It was a hard-earned and hard-fought win. We never thought it would come from being free-flowing. We thought we would have to dig in and we have done that today."

Though the goal was credited to Tarkowski, it was Jack Cork who was responsible for the 40th-minute breakthrough when his shot deflected off the England defender's midriff into the net.

It was a scruffy goal but Dyche was not complaining.

"A goal is a goal. When you find wins and clean sheets hard to come by, 1-0 is a very pleasing result," he said.

"Performances have been suggesting we were getting back to that hardy edge we know we have got. We created chances but it wasn't about that. It was about fight and spirit. We know we can get better but sometimes you've got to grind."

The goal was only what Burnley deserved, though, after they took control in the second part of the opening period with Chris Wood and Robbie Brady, who had also volleyed narrowly over, forcing fine saves from Mat Ryan.

Burnley also felt they should have earned a second-half penalty when Yves Bissouma's extravagant bicycle kick in his own box caught Phil Bardsley.

Yet on a special day for Burnley's Joe Hart, who was making his 400th league appearance in English football, the former England goalkeeper proved his quality as the home side held on under increasingly severe pressure.

Brighton's manager Chris Hughton, whose side lie 11th in the table, felt the Seagulls deserved more.

Burnley out of relegation zone with win over Brighton

West Ham United continued their fine recent form with a 3-2 come-from-behind derby win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Palace came into the contest having won once in their last 10 league games but got off to a perfect start with James McArthur breaking the deadlock with six minutes on the clock.

However, the introduction of striker Andy Carroll at halftime revitalised West Ham, who turned the match on its head with goals from Robert Snodgrass -- his first in the league for the club -- and Javier Hernandez.

Close-season signing Felipe Anderson fired a stunning third in the 65th minute -- his fifth goal in his last six league games -- to calm the nerves around the London Stadium.

But the hosts had to hang on for their third successive win -- the first time they have done so since December 2016 -- with Jeffrey Schlupp getting Palace back in it with 14 minutes left.

West Ham climbed to 10th while Palace's woeful run of form leaves them 16th, two points above the relegation zone.

"It is the third game in a row where we score three goals and that reflects what we are trying to do," West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

"I always say to the players we must have a winning mentality."

Good Fortune

Injured Austria striker Marko Arnautovic was missing for West Ham, but it was defence that was their undoing early on, with McArthur stealing in unmarked from a set piece to break the deadlock.

The hosts really struggled to create any openings of note in response, and were fortunate not to fall further behind when Luka Milivojevic thundered an effort against the bar on the stroke of halftime.

That good fortune proved to be a turning point, as West Ham came out for the second period with added impetus, and levelled through a fine Snodgrass goal, before Hernandez pounced to put his side in front in the 62nd minute.

In-form Anderson then found the net three minutes later to put the hosts in control, before Schlupp ensured a nervy finish.

"After they equalised we started to play better and had good control but after the free kick and strike from Anderson we find ourselves 3-1 down," Palace manager Roy Hodgson said.

"We continued to ask questions but the two goals after the equaliser did for us."

Three wins in a row for West Ham with success over Palace

Mauricio Pochettino challenged his Tottenham squad to fight for silverware on two fronts after seeing his team thrust themselves back into the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory at Leicester City ahead of a Champions League trip to Barcelona in midweek.

The Tottenham manager saw his side brush the Foxes aside despite Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, two of his most potent attacking players, playing only cameo roles off the bench.

The pair will now be fresh for Tuesday’s crucial Champions League trip to Catalonia with Spurs needing to win at the Camp Nou to guarantee progress to the last 16.

And Pochettino believes all of his players will have a role in the hectic weeks ahead.

"To show the belief you have in the squad is massive," said Pochettino.

"There's no point players playing every three days. It's not healthy, they need to rest and need some time to breathe.

"For some teams it's so difficult to manage. The most important thing is being genuine in the trust you have in the squad.

"We are showing we trust all the players. In this busy period everybody needs to be focused."

Victory in the East Midlands moved Tottenham back into third, just six points off the top of the Premier League, now headed by Liverpool following Manchester City’s first defeat of the season at Chelsea.

By staying in the race despite a host of injury problems and delays over moving into the club's new stadium, Pochettino now believes his players can keep pace with the league leaders.

"The three points are massive to keep our position in the table," he added.

"It's a massive win for us. The reality is we are there, fighting Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Arsenal - that's the reality.

"It was a tough place so I’m very happy with the performance. I am so pleased and it allows us to start thinking about Barcelona."

Son on the rise

In the absence of Kane and Eriksen, Son Heung-min came to the fore by opening the scoring with a left-footed rocket from the edge of the penalty area before crossing for Dele Alli to head home Spurs' second just before the hour mark.

Son's impact in the first few months of the season was limited by his participation in the Asian Games, but the South Korean has been in fine form in recent weeks after skipping international duty last month.

"The first few months of the season I was a little bit disappointed because he travelled a lot, but after a rest and not going with the national team he was so focused on trying to improve," added Pochettino.

"Today he improved a lot from (the) Chelsea (game) and we’re so happy with his contribution and performance and that is the player we want."

The only blight on a bright night for Pochettino was an injury to right-back Serge Aurier that could rule the Ivorian out for the Barcelona match.

However, Pochettino is confident Spurs can produce on the biggest stage to cap a remarkable comeback after picking up just one point from their opening three Champions League games.

"It will be a massive game. They are qualified for the next stage but in the Champions League nobody gives you a present.

"We need to win and deserve to win and the mentality has got to be 200 percent to try to win because it’s a game we must win.

"We will arrive in the best condition but in front of us will be Barcelona, one of the best teams in Europe."

Pochettino urges Spurs to fight for title and Champions League

Chelsea bounced back from the disappointment of losing at Wolves in midweek as they defeated Manchester City 2-0 in Premier League's Matchday 16 action on Saturday.

City dominated the first half but failed to profit with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane missed big chances.

Despite the victory, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri complained about his side's level of motivation.

While interacting with media, Sarri said, "I think that we have a team with some difficulties to be motivated and in this kind of match, it is easy to have great motivation, a very good level of determination, the right level of aggressivity."

"But then during the season, you will also have to play against the small teams."

Sarri had lost all of his previous three meetings against Guardiola and was growing increasingly frustrated at his side's inability to hold possession as the visitors dominated the first half.

Chelsea players have 'some difficulties to be motivated': Maurizio Sarri

Liverpool maintained their best start to a season as Mo Salah, back at his dazzling best, scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth that took them, temporarily at least, to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Salah set them on their way in the 25th minute, latching on to the rebound after Roberto Firmino's 30-metre shot was palmed into his path by Asmir Begovic, even though television replays showed the Egyptian to be marginally offside when he pounced.

There was no argument about his second strike straight after the interval when Firmino again freed him to maraud on goal and fire into the corner, with the help of the slightest nick off Nathan Ake's heel.

After the unfortunate Steve Cook diverted Andy Robertson's cross past Begovic for an own goal, Salah worked his real magic, outmuscling Cook to get to Adam Lallana's through ball before dancing nimbly around Begovic and slotting home late on.

Salah's treble at the Vitality Stadium put him on 10 league goals this season, matching Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the top of the scoring charts that he dominated last season.

Against tough, seventh-placed opponents, Juergen Klopp's side went a 17th straight league match unbeaten, equalling their club record set 10 years ago, and emulated the 4-0 thrashing of the Cherries in the corresponding fixture last season.

It put them a point clear of Manchester City at the summit on 42 points, though Pep Guardiola's men have the chance to regain top spot later when they visit Chelsea.

Amazing Career

It was a splendid afternoon for Liverpool's James Milner to celebrate becoming only the 13th player to make 500 top-flight appearances in the Premier League era.

Salah even gave his own man-of-the match award to his 32-year-old team mate to mark his achievement.

"He's had an amazing career. I have to congratulate him on an amazing career -- he deserves this today," Salah told Milner on Sky Sports. "I will not take it."

As he clutched the match ball after his second Liverpool hat-trick, the Egyptian added: "It wasn't a bad way at all (to get back among the goals)...I enjoyed the last one the most. I was calm."

Now getting back into his most imperious stride after a slow start to the campaign, Salah added: "My expectations are very high.

"I know everyone else's expectations of me are also very high but the most important thing is for us to win each game and be top of the table."

For Milner, it was a special afternoon after 16 years of excellence in the Premier League. "It's the perfect way to celebrate it (the 500th appearance)," he said.

"It wasn't our best performance of the season by any means but we were efficient, got the job done and this fella (Salah) is unbelievable... He can win you a game on his own."

Superb Salah treble at Bournemouth sends Liverpool top

Mesut Ozil has missed Arsenal's last four matches and it is expected that he might be absent when the Gunners host Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery gave an update on the fitness of attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

While speaking to media, Emery said, "He had backache and now he is working with one physio. We are going to look when he can come with us."

Ozil is being treated for a back problem and manager Unai Emery has hinted that he could be passed fit on Friday if he comes through sessions with the club's physiotherapist unscathed.

He said, "Tomorrow is the training, the last training before (Saturday's match), today, this morning, he was working with a physio, but on the pitch, running and touching the ball. And tomorrow is the decision."

Ozil's absence mattered little as the Gunners' unbeaten run simply carried on without him.

Emery called on the club's supporters to get behind the team, to help finish off a series of three games in seven days with seven points following the 4-2 victory in the North London derby last Sunday and the 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Wednesday.

Mesut Ozil to face fitness test

Naby Keita has started to show he can add creativity to Liverpool's midfield but Jurgen Klopp may question his squad's strength in depth despite securing two Premier League wins in four days.

Klopp is likely to revert to his tried-and-trusted first choices at Bournemouth on Saturday, having been a little lucky on Wednesday to emerge with a 3-1 win at Burnley after making seven changes to his line-up.

There were good reasons for so many changes - the match came hot on the heels of Sunday's dramatic late derby victory over Everton, at the start of a frantic month that features home games against Napoli, Manchester United and Arsenal.

In addition, full-back Andy Robertson and forward Sadio Mane were injured, and so Klopp would have had to shuffle his players around even if rotation had not been on his mind.

Yet Liverpool were second-best for the opening hour at Turf Moor against opponents without a victory since September 30, and only turned the match around in the final 30 minutes, when Klopp brought on Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

It was evidence of just how important Salah, Firmino and Sane are to the Liverpool cause, even if they have not necessarily been at their best this season.
During Liverpool's struggles on Wednesday, though, the performance of Keita did give Klopp reason to be positive.

The Guinea midfielder's impact has been restricted by injury problems since his arrival from RB Leipzig in July but he is starting to look at home in the English game.

His creativity is likely to be crucial, given that Liverpool have been short of such a player following the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January and because of the long-term knee injury suffered by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in April.

Keita makes his case

Of the seven players brought into the starting line-up by Klopp at Burnley, Keita made the strongest case to retain his place at Bournemouth, where there will have to be at least one change, with defender Joe Gomez sidelined for up to six weeks after fracturing his leg.

At Turf Moor, Keita showed he was willing to fight for the ball but also provided forward impetus once he got it, almost scoring with a shot that Joe Hart saved brilliantly.

"He started the season brilliantly and obviously then getting an injury set him back a little bit. But you can see how good a player he is," said captain Jordan Henderson.

"That shot with the left foot and the save from Hart was fantastic. In his overall play he is comfortable on the ball and he helps build up play from the back. He drives the ball forward, which is big for us. I thought he was outstanding."

As a whole, though, Liverpool lack the strength in depth of Manchester City, the team they will have to surpass in order to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.

City had a rather more comfortable night at Watford on Tuesday, despite only winning 2-1, as Pep Guardiola rotated his squad.

It raises the question as to whether Liverpool can afford to go full out for both the Champions League and Premier League. Fail to get the right result against Napoli in their final European group-stage game next Tuesday, and the decision will be made for them.

Henderson, though, is remaining positive.

"The games are coming thick and fast, a lot of games in a short space of time but we showed we can use the squad and still perform to the level we know we are capable of and win games - and that's a big plus for us," he said.

Do Liverpool have squad depth to compete on two fronts?

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri said that he is "very worried" after losing 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday as the Blues lost more ground in the Premier League title race.

During the post-match interview, Sarri said, "I don't know why but I am very worried, not for the result, but for the fact that we didn't react of the first goal of the opponent. We didn't react at all."

Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota scored goals in a four-minute span around the hour mark to condemn Chelsea to a second loss in three games, after a recent 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.

'I am very worried,' says Chelsea's boss Maurizio Sarri after losing to Wolves

Manchester United remain distant spectators in a Premier League title race in which Liverpool continue to chase Manchester City but showed plenty of spirit as they twice equalised in a 2-2 draw with in-form Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Liverpool also fell behind but stormed back to beat Burnley 3-1 and cut the gap on leaders Manchester City to two points.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed to third with a 3-1 win over Southampton while Chelsea hung on to fourth spot, above Arsenal on goal difference, despite a 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers who ended a run of six games without a win.

Storm clouds have been gathering over Jose Mourinho's misfiring United side and on a wet night in the north west they again looked well short of being contenders for the top four.

It was the first United v Arsenal clash since 1986 not featuring either Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger in the dugout.

On this occasion it was Wenger's successor Unai Emery who would had more to be satisfied as his Arsenal side stretched their unbeaten run to 20 matches -- although United boss Jose Mourinho also took comfort from a result that left his side 18 points behind leaders Manchester City.

"This is a performance of big soul and heart," Mourinho said. "But even from our bench you could feel the little panic when the ball comes to our defensive third."

Mourinho, who left Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku out of his starting lineup, said his side "scored all four goals".

He could not have expected keeper David de Gea to suffer the sort of panic that keeps undermining his side.

De Gea should have comfortably held Shkodran Mustafi's 26th-minute downward header but merely juggled it over his head and over the line.

Anthony Martial levelled six minutes later from close range, Ander Herrera pulling the ball back after Marcos Rojo's free kick was well-saved by Bernd Leno.

Rojo forced Leno into a fine save but it was Arsenal who led again in the 68th minute when Alexandre Lacazette got the final touch but the advantage lasted less than a minute as Arsenal's defence allowed Jesse Lingard to steal in and slide a shot under Leno.

De Gea made crucial late saves to deny Arsenal a first league win at Old Trafford since 2006.

"I think we controlled the game, the second half better than the first," Emery said. "We could have won this match in certain moments, but they equalised very quickly after both our goals."

Best Start

After Manchester City beat Watford on Tuesday to go five points clear, Liverpool responded well as their best start to a top-flight season continued after falling behind at Turf Moor.

James Milner levelled for the Reds after Jack Cork's surprise opener and substitute Roberto Firmino set Liverpool on course for a 12th win in 15 league games with his first touch before Xherdan Shaqiri rounded things off.

"I was really happy we could just adjust a few tactical things (at halftime)," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said after his side's 12th in 15 games.

"I shouted a lot in the first half but I wasn't angry."

His only concern was a nasty-looking ankle injury sustained by Joe Gomez in the first half.

"But even from our bench you could feel the little panic when the ball comes to our defensive third." Mourinho, who left Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku out of his starting lineup, said his side "scored all four goals". "We could have won this match in certain moments, but they equalised very quickly after both our goals." Best Start After Manchester City beat Watford on Tuesday to go five points clear, Liverpool responded well as their best start to a top-flight season continued after falling behind at Turf Moor. "I shouted a lot in the first half but I wasn't angry." His only concern was a nasty-looking ankle injury sustained by Joe Gomez in the first half. Tottenham Hotspur shook off their north London derby defeat by Arsenal with Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min all on target for Mauricio Pochettino's side at Wembley where new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl watched from the stands. Video: Jurgen Klopp 'apologised to Silva' for wild celebration after Liverpool's late winner

Manchester City maintained their unbeaten run with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table as Manchester United fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

City top the standings by five points from Liverpool who face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday after Tottenham Hotspur, who are third, face north London rivals Arsenal.

Crystal Palace beat Burnley 2-0 to end a run of eight matches without a win and there were victories for Leicester City, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

City were without Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez at the Etihad but normal service resumed as they took the lead against Bournemouth after 16 minutes through Bernardo Silva.

The visitors went into halftime level, however, thanks to a header from in-form England striker Callum Wilson.

Bournemouth's hopes of a stunning upset were dashed as the champions struck again with goals by Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Guendogan.

"Bournemouth are a good side, so strong up front, so we could not press," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "They played long balls, attacked the channels. They were taller than us and stronger than us.

"In the last 20 minutes we were flat and that is why I am delighted to win in that way."

Guardiola's side are 16 points ahead of neighbours United whose poor season continued with a draw against struggling Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong fired an unstoppable shot past David de Gea after 13 minutes and the Spanish goalkeeper was beaten again by a curling Cedric Soares free kick into the top corner.

Southampton let a two-goal lead slip against Fulham last week and United quickly hit back through Romelu Lukaku who was set up by Marcus Rashford.

The goal was the Belgian striker's first for his club since the middle of September, a drought lasting 981 minutes.

Ander Herrera equalised before halftime to bring United fully back into the contest but the match petered out into a draw, a result that will not please either manager much.

"We did so well in the last 10, 15 minutes of the first half... good spirit, good fight, good comeback from 0-2 to 2-2 and great examples of players fighting to the limits," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"Positive examples include Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and many others showing that respect for the shirt and showing respect for the club. Not the result we wanted but a performance that had positive things."

Huddersfield Town looked set to continue their recent upturn in form by scoring after 58 seconds at home to Brighton, Mathias Jorgensen heading in the fastest goal of the Premier League season.

However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Steve Mounie was sent off for a high challenge and Brighton took full advantage with goals by Shane Duffy and Florin Andone.

PALACE JOY

Palace leapt above Huddersfield in the standings by beating Burnley at Selhurst Park to lift the pressure on manager Roy Hodgson.

Strikes in each half from James McArthur and Andros Townsend were Palace's first goals from open play at home all season. Burnley remained in the relegation zone having slipped down to 18th after Cardiff City's 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

Leicester recorded their first home win in the league since September with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Watford.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with a penalty after 12 minutes before James Maddison netted a brilliant volley to move Leicester up to eighth.

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez scored twice and Felipe Anderson grabbed another as the London side won 3-0 win at Newcastle United, halting the recent momentum of Rafa Benitez's side.
