The World Economic Forum's annual Global Risks Report is a window into the collective anxieties of our planet. This year's edition, launched in January 2024, paints a picture of a world teetering on a tightrope, facing a precarious balance between immediate challenges and long-term existential threats.

Fake news takes centre stage

In the short term, the report identifies misinformation and disinformation as the biggest concern. With major elections looming in several countries, the potential for social unrest fueled by manipulated narratives is a clear and present danger. Imagine a world where truth becomes a casualty in the battle for clicks and shares, where fabricated headlines and deepfakes sway public opinion and exacerbate societal divisions. This is the chilling prospect that haunts the near future, warns the World Economic Forum report.

The long shadow of Environmental peril

But while the immediate firestorm of misinformation demands attention, the report also warns of a slow-burning inferno on the horizon – environmental degradation. Extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and heatwaves are predicted to become more frequent and intense, pushing vulnerable communities to the brink. Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse threaten food security and disrupt natural cycles, creating a domino effect with far-reaching consequences.

A multipolar maze: Cooperation or chaos?

Complicating the picture is the emergence of a multipolar world order. With traditional power structures shifting, the report predicts a future where middle and great powers compete for influence, potentially hindering global cooperation on pressing issues like climate change and pandemic preparedness. The question is - Can we navigate this complex labyrinth of competing interests, or will it lead to isolationism and escalating tensions?

A glimmer of hope

Despite the daunting challenges, the report doesn't paint a picture of inevitable doom. It emphasises the importance of building resilience at all levels – individual, societal, and global. Investing in digital literacy campaigns to combat misinformation, fostering international cooperation on environmental initiatives, and strengthening social safety nets are all crucial steps towards a more secure and sustainable future.

Global risks in focus: Disinformation tops short-term threats, Environmental catastrophe looms large

In a momentous decision, Norway's parliament, the Storting has given its nod to a government initiative allowing Arctic seabed mineral exploration.

This sets the course for mining exploration into parts of its seabed, including a sprawling 280,000-square-kilometre expanse, predominantly located in the icy depths of the Arctic. Despite opposition, the plan received 80 affirmative votes and only 20 dissenting voices.

Norway takes a step towards becoming a significant mineral producer

With this, Norway, a leader in oil and gas production in Western Europe, ventures into the uncharted realms of ocean floor mining — which can potentially transform it into a formidable mineral producer, reports AFP.

Norway’s Parliament approves deep-sea mineral exploration, ignites environmental debate

Scientists around the world are exploring new, innovative ways to reduce our dependence on toxic, non-renewable sources of energy while focusing on discovering viable, renewable and eco-friendly alternatives.

One such clean source of fuel is biodiesel, which is made from biological elements such as edible and non-edible oils, animal fats and waste restaurant grease. Biodiesel is renewable as well as biodegradable, making it a much cleaner, eco-friendlier source of energy.

However, the high cost of biodiesel remains the biggest hurdle in the way to its wider acceptance. The solution to this problem has now been found: cigarette butts.

How cigarette butts can help lower biodiesel cost

Previous studies have shown that adding additives like triglyceride triacetin leads to increased efficiency of biodiesel in the form of decreased air pollution and enhanced combustibility.

However producing triacetin is highly hazardous to the environment, which requires the use of a lot of chemicals and generates excessive toxic waste.

Scientists from Kaunus University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania, in collaboration with the Lithuanian Energy Institute, have developed a way to produce triacetin using cigarette butts, according to research published last month in the Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis.

“In our research group, we are working on the topics of recycling and waste management, therefore we are always looking for the waste, which is present in huge amounts and has a unique structure,” said Samy Yousef, lead and corresponding author of the study.

“Cigarettes are made of three components – tobacco, paper and a filter made of cellulose acetate fibers – and are a good source of raw materials and energy. Plus, cigarette butts are easy to collect as there are many systems and companies for collecting this waste in place,” he added.

How was triacetin produced from cigarette butts?

Scientists used pyrolysis to thermally decompose the butts at temperatures of 650, 700 and 750°C.

After conducting several experiments, the experts realised that the maximum amount of triacetin compound (43 per cent) was extracted at 750°C, with yields estimated at 38 wt per cent oil, 25.7 wt per cent char, and 36.4 wt per cent gas.

“All the products have real applications,” Yousef said.

Bitcoin has once again seized the spotlight, experiencing an almost threefold surge in value throughout 2023. Yet, the persisting criticism revolves around its perceived lack of utility. Bitcoin is merely a store of value. While environmentalists vehemently oppose bitcoin due to its energy-intensive nature, a new perspective is emerging from economists who believe the cryptocurrency's substantial market cap could serve a groundbreaking purpose: supporting climate initiatives. Can bitcoin potentially go from climate culprit to carbon champion? Take a look at this report to find out...

The big meat companies as well as lobby groups have been planning to make their major presence at the Cop28 climate conference with their communications plan which is aimed at making a pro-meat statement in front of policymakers across the summit.

As reported by The Guardian, the meat industry has been planning to “tell its story and tell it well” at the Dubai conference. In the file, the details showed how the world’s largest meat company JBS has been planning to come out in “full force” during the summit, along with other big industry leaders like the Global Dairy Platform and the North American Meat Institute.

The documents, which belonged to the industry-funded Global Meat Alliance (GMA), emphasise the desire of the industry to promote “our scientific evidence” at the summit.

The members of the alliance have been appealed to stick to the main comms message which says that meat is beneficial for the environment.

Dairy and meat companies have been under increasing pressure because of their large greenhouse gas footprints. It has been said that the dairy industry is responsible for nearly 3.4 per cent of global human-induced emissions, which is more than aviation's share.

In the documents, the trade groups have given some indication of how they plan to shape conversations in Dubai. One stated that it will “push” the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization to host “positive livestock content” at Cop28.

Recently, it was reported by The Guardian that the pressure from the industry resulted in the censorship of FAO reports on the role played by cattle in increasing the emission of greenhouse gases. Animal agriculture is one of the biggest emitters of methane, a greenhouse gas which is 80 times more potent in comparison to carbon dioxide when measured across 20 years.

Scientists stated that unless they take swift action, methane emitted from agriculture will alone push the world beyond a 1.5C (2.7F) increase in temperature which is above preindustrial levels and increases the risk of pushing the world into irreversible climate breakdown.

“These companies are stepping up their game because the exposure they are facing is stepping up,” said Jennifer Jacquet, professor of environmental science and policy at the University of Miami, while speaking to The Guardian. “It used to be that they were caught on the back foot, but now they’re completely prepared," she added.

The world’s first transatlantic powered by 100 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) took off on Tuesday (Nov 28) from London and is currently en route to New York. The flight operated by Virgin Atlantic, dubbed Flight100, marked the first step in a potential low-carbon option as the world continues to grapple with the impact of climate change and is looking for ways in which it can lower the release of Earth-warming gases.

The large passenger powered by only alternative fuels operated by a Virgin Boeing 787 and powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines plans to show that SAF is a safe replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel compatible with today’s engines, airframes and fuel infrastructure.

The flight took off from London’s Heathrow Airport at 1149 GMT and is scheduled to arrive at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport at 1940 GMT.

The maiden flight also comes days ahead of the beginning of COP28 climate talks in Dubai which are expected to focus on the future role of fossil fuels, and whether countries should commit to phasing out the use of carbon emitting coal, oil and gas.

What is SAF?

The so-called SAF is typically made from renewable biomass and waste resources but is said to have the potential to deliver the performance of petroleum-based jet fuel but with a fraction of its carbon footprint. SAF can be made from a variety of sources, including crops and household waste.

The SAF for Flight100 is made from a “unique duel blend” which includes 88 per cent of HEFA and 12 per cent of SAK, the former is said to be made from waste fats, while the latter is rest from the wastes of corn production in the United States, said Virgin Atlantic.

The fuel used by Flight100 also includes a small amount of synthetic aromatic kerosene made from waste corn, said the company. While the SAF is not unheard of since it is used in jet engines as part of a blend with traditional kerosene, this is the first time that a flight will only run on this type of fuel.

About Flight100

The one-of-a-kind flight is not carrying any paying passengers or cargo but includes passengers like Virgin Atlantic’s billionaire founder Richard Branson, its chief executive Shai Weiss, and United Kingdom’s Transport Minister Mark Harper.

“The world will always assume something can’t be done, until you do it. The spirit of innovation is getting out there and trying to prove that we can do things better for everyone’s benefit,” said Branson, in a statement ahead of the take-off.

Boeing 787 has been filled with 50 tonnes of SAF and will become the first time a commercial airline has flown long haul on 100 per cent “green fuel”. The Flight100’s departure follows the Gulfstream G600 business jet’s successful transatlantic crossing using the same fuel last week.

The milestone also comes after successful ground tests and analyses conducted as well as following the approval by the UK regulator the Civil Aviation Authority earlier this month.

The Virgin Atlantic-led, partly government funded, project involves a number of major companies including Rolls-Royce, Boeing and energy giant BP.

The consortium also includes Imperial College London, the University of Sheffield, ICF, and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). Researchers from Imperial and Sheffield will be leading the scientific work to assess the climate effects of the Flight100.

How much difference does SAF make?

As countries across the world have sought to decarbonise in the upcoming decade the aviation industry is relying on SAF as the most effective tool available to help bring its net emissions down to zero.

The aviation industry is arguably one of the most difficult to decarbonise and accounts for around three per cent of emissions which contribute to human-induced climate change as a result of carbon dioxide and non-carbon dioxide emissions.

The use of SAF is not going to stop planes from emitting carbon, but the industry says the “lifecycle emissions” of these fuels can be up to 70 per cent lower compared to fossil-based jet fuel over its lifecycle.

ALSO READ | Study finds that media's climate crisis coverage sparks fear and favours avoidance

But while SAF is key to reducing those emissions it comes at a cost which is about three to five times higher than regular jet fuel right now and accounts for less than 0.1 per cent of total global jet fuel in use today.

The planes releasing carbon dioxide also release particulate matter (PM) which causes contrails which are said to contribute significantly to climate change since they trap heat causing a greenhouse effect – particularly those that persist at night.

Therefore, researchers believe that we can reduce the aviation industry’s contribution to global warming by taking steps like using SAF altering flight altitude and flying during the daytime.

Researchers who are leading the scientific work, ahead of the take-off on Tuesday, measured particulate matter (PM) emitted by a smaller-scale aircraft engine and found that SAF reduces the emissions of PM.

As per the Imperial College in London the researchers will also reportedly analyse the effect of using SAF after the flight with on-board flight data, weather data and satellite imagery to estimate the amount of particulate matter released and track any contrails formed by the flight.

Last month, the head of the International Airlines Group (IAG) said the risk of the aviation industry not meeting the European Union mandate for SAF availability in 2025 is higher than 90 per cent.

Similarly, a report by Reuters citing analysts said that the 2030 target looks challenging given SAF’s small volumes and its high cost.

‘Greenwashing’

While many have hailed the maiden flight as a success story that, according to the UK’s transport minister, could inspire the “next generation of solutions” others, like environmental advocacy group Stay Grounded have described it as a “greenwashing distraction.”

“(Fuel substitutes) are nowhere close to being scalable in the necessary timeframe to avoid climate collapse. What is urgently needed is to reduce the burning of fossil jet fuels, which means reducing flights wherever possible,” said Magdalena Heuwieser, who represents the network, as quoted by Reuters.

The spirit of innovation is getting out there and trying to prove that we can do things better for everyone’s benefit,” said Branson, in a statement ahead of the take-off. ALSO READ | Study finds that media's climate crisis coverage sparks fear and favours avoidance But while SAF is key to reducing those emissions it comes at a cost which is about three to five times higher than regular jet fuel right now and accounts for less than 0.1 per cent of total global jet fuel in use today. ALSO READ | Explained | What are the key issues in the upcoming COP28 summit in UAE? Similarly, a report by Reuters citing analysts said that the 2030 target looks challenging given SAF’s small volumes and its high cost. ‘Greenwashing’ While many have hailed the maiden flight as a success story that, according to the UK’s transport minister, could inspire the “next generation of solutions” others, like environmental advocacy group Stay Grounded have described it as a “greenwashing distraction.” “(Fuel substitutes) are nowhere close to being scalable in the necessary timeframe to avoid climate collapse. What is urgently needed is to reduce the burning of fossil jet fuels, which means reducing flights wherever possible,” said Magdalena Heuwieser, who represents the network, as quoted by Reuters. Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is once again under scrutiny, this time for allegedly "harassing" a humpback whale while riding a jetski during a public holiday.

This investigation adds to a series of probes into Bolsonaro's actions, ranging from environmental offences to political misconduct, reported the Guardian.

Known as "Captain Chainsaw" for his anti-environmental policies during his four-year administration, Bolsonaro now faces allegations of environmental misconduct during a jetski excursion near São Sebastião on Brazil's south-eastern coastline.

In June, a man resembling Bolsonaro was reportedly filmed within 15 metres of a humpback whale, using a mobile phone to capture the distressed behaviour of the whale.

Brazilian law prohibits the deliberate harassment of cetaceans, including humpback whales, and mandates a minimum distance of 100 metres for vessels with engines running.

Environmental agency Ibama enforces regulations that prohibit vessels from approaching marine animals too closely and engaging in activities that may disturb them. Such regulations include maintaining a distance of 300 metres from dolphins or whales and avoiding excessive noise in their vicinity.

Global fossil fuel production in the next seven years will be more than double the levels pushing the world far beyond the climate goals, including the 1.5 degree Celsius target, set under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, said the United Nations and researchers, on Wednesday (Nov 8).

The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Production Gap report comes ahead of the COP28 climate conference which will take place later this month, where the future of fossil fuels is set to be a key point of discussion.

What did the UNEP report find?

The report assesses the gap in fossil fuel production cuts and what’s needed to meet climate goals. “Fossil fuel phase out is one of the pivotal issues that will be negotiated at COP 28,” said Ploy Achakulwisut, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) scientist and a lead author of the report said in a press briefing.

She added, “We need countries to commit to a phase out of all fossil fuels to keep the 1.5C goal alive.” Leaders from across the world are set to convene for the global COP 28 climate meeting starting November 30, in the oil-rich nation of United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Under the Paris climate deal, nations have committed to a long-term goal of limiting average global temperature to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and even try to limit them further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

However, the report analysed 20 major fossil fuel producers and found they plan to produce a total of 110 per cent more fossil fuels than what would be consistent with limiting the degree of warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and 69 per cent more than would be consistent with two degree Celsius.

The report also noted that none of the 20 countries – which account for 82 per cent of production and 73 per cent of consumption of the world’s fossil fuel supply – have committed to reducing coal, oil, and gas production in line with limiting the warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

This comes as burning fossil fuel has been attributed as the main cause of climate change as it accounts for most of the planet-heating carbon pollution driving global warming.

Calls for unity ahead of COP28

“Governments’ plans to expand fossil fuel production are undermining the energy transition needed to achieve net-zero emissions, throwing humanity’s future into question,” said UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen.

She also called for nations to “unite behind a managed and equitable phase-out of coal, oil and gas – to ease the turbulence ahead and benefit every person on this planet.” The countries analysed include Australia, China, Norway, Qatar, Britain, the UAE and the United States.

Out of the 20 countries, 17 have pledged to reach net zero emissions but continue to promote subsidies, support and plan the expansion of fossil fuel production, said the report.

In fact, the US which aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050 has accelerated domestic production of oil and gas since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Global fossil fuel production plans threaten 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold: UN report

In a bid to manage its rapidly increasing population of more than 100 hippos, Colombia has taken on a multi-pronged approach that includes surgical sterilisation, the potential relocation of hippos to other nations, and, as a last resort, euthanasia.

The hippos are descendants of animals illicitly introduced to the country by the late drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s. Following Escobar's death in 1993, these so-called "cocaine hippos" have roamed freely, posing significant challenges for environmental authorities.

What is the real concern?

The hippos, originating from Escobar's estate, have expanded into nearby rivers where they have thrived without natural predators.

This has led to their classification as an invasive species capable of disrupting the local ecosystem.

The Colombian authorities estimate there are 169 hippos in the country, particularly in the Magdalena River basin, with projections indicating a potential population of 1,000 by 2035 if no action is taken.

The initial step of the plan involves the surgical sterilisation of 40 hippos annually, commencing the following week. However, this procedure is both costly, at approximately $9,800 per sterilisation, and presents risks for both the hippos, including allergic reactions to anesthesia or death, and the animal health personnel.

Hippos are dispersed across a vast area, are territorial, and often exhibit aggressive behaviour.

Experts are of the opinion that sterilisation alone will not suffice in controlling the growth of the invasive species. Therefore, the Colombian government is exploring the possibility of relocating hippos to other nations, a plan proposed earlier in the year.

However, the cost of deporting the hippos is estimated at $3.5 million, reported CBS News. Colombian officials have engaged with authorities in Mexico, India, and the Philippines, with the evaluation of sending 60 hippos to India. The ministry underscores the need for authorisation from the recipient country's environmental authority for any such export.

As a last resort to manage the population, the ministry is developing a protocol for euthanasia.

The unchecked population growth of hippos in Colombia has already had several consequences, including altering the composition of rivers and threatening the habitat of local wildlife such as manatees, otters, and turtles. The hippos' faeces are a significant contributing factor to this environmental disruption, potentially poisoning the rivers.

Groundwater is a major source of pollution on Great Barrier Reef: Study

A new plan which is aimed at reducing the environmental risks from chemicals and waste was adopted by the United Nations conference on Saturday (Sep 30), with several countries committed to phasing out the most harmful ones in the next 12 years or so. The framework adopted also aims to enhance the safety management of hazardous chemicals where they are needed.

What is the framework about?

The framework called the ‘Global Framework on Chemicals – For a planet free of harm from chemicals and waste’ was adopted by governments, companies, and NGOs at the fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management, held in the German city of Bonn.

The plan in question sets out 28 concrete targets and guidelines for key sectors across the lifecycle of chemicals starting from production to waste.

Some of the steps include preventing illegal trafficking of chemicals and waste, introducing and implementing national legislation and phasing out the highly hazardous pesticides in agriculture by 2035.

To address the pressing issue of air pollution in India during winter months, the revised Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) was officially put into action on Sunday (October 1). GRAP was revised in July 2023 with the aim to strengthen measures against deteriorating air quality.

Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, while speaking on the importance of the implementation of revised GRAP, said, "In view of the possibility of an increase in pollution level in winter, GRAP has been implemented in Delhi from today... Implementation of the GRAP system is our priority under the Winter Action Plan... There are a total of four stages of GRAP. After AQI reaches the poor category, measures will be taken as per the steps of GRAP. Currently, AQI in Delhi is below 200... As the situation would change, the rules of GRAP would get stricter..."

One of the major contributors to air pollution in northern India is the practice of stubble burning, primarily seen in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. This annual practice exacerbates air quality issues during the winter months.

Understanding the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)

GRAP is a comprehensive strategy designed to combat air pollution in cities across India. It consists of four stages, each tailored to address specific air quality concerns. The plan's flexibility allows for adjustments based on the severity of pollution and regional differences.

There are four stages of GRAP:

Stage 1 - 'Poor' (AQI 201-300): Initial measures to address deteriorating air quality.

Stage 2 - 'Very Poor' (AQI 301-400): Focused actions and intensified remedial measures in identified hotspots.

Stage 3 - 'Severe' (AQI 401-450): Stricter restrictions on "plying of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel LMVs (4 wheelers) in Delhi and in the districts of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar."

India: Centre implements revised GRAP to combat air pollution during winters

The formation of the next “supercontinent” on Earth could wipe out most mammals, including humans and cause our planet, as we know it, to become uninhabitable. But there are still around 250 million years left for this to possibly happen, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience on Monday (September 25).

First-ever supercomputer climate model

A study led by researchers from the University of Bristol, in England, suggests that the shifting of continents may spell doom for mammals that have lived on Earth for more than 330 million years and are often known for being the world’s great evolutionary success story since the death of dinosaurs.

The research also was the first-ever attempt to model how extreme the climate might become during the formation of the next supercontinent – Pangea Ultima, which is expected to form when all the current continents merge together in the distant future.

It is believed that mass extinction would be caused primarily due to heat stress, and while mammals have had the ability to adapt to it in the past, we might be too slow this time around.

The recent model predicts that Earth’s greenhouse gas effect could reach a tipping point during the formation of the Pangea Ultima which is supposed to happen in the next 250 million years or so, rendering most of the planet “uninhabitable to mammalian life”.

The heat stress would also be marked by greater volcanic activity which would pump twice as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and as the sun gets older it would emit more radiation.

“The formation and decay of Pangea Ultima will limit and…ultimately end terrestrial mammalian habitability on Earth by exceeding their warm thermal tolerances, billions of years earlier than previously hypothesized,” said the researchers.

What would happen?

There is very little known about what happens to Earth’s climate when its continents get smooshed together to form one big landmass which our planet has experienced on more than a few occasions.

The last one, Pangea, which happened around 310 million years ago and researchers know most about, served as a case study for this paper.

During the so-called Pangea Ultima era, the temperature is expected to be as high as 15 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and up to 30 degrees Celsius on land.

The Sun would emit around 2.5 per cent more radiation while the supercontinent would drastically alter the global climate system and possibly dry out large swathes of land which, in turn, would trap more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

The study also predicts the worst-case scenario where Pangea Ultima could result in a warm month mean temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius. This period, marked by high temperatures, would also lead to severe food supply problems due to the collapse of vegetation.

The paper also notes that most plants become stressed at temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius and break down completely if exposed to 60 degrees Celsius for prolonged periods.

“The Earth has a very changeable environment. Humans are very lucky with what we have now and we should not be pushing our own climate beyond the cooler climate that we evolved through,” said the paper’s lead author, Alexander Farnsworth, from the University of Bristol, as quoted by the Guardian.

He added, “We are the dominant species but Earth and its climate decide how long that lasts.”

Next ‘supercontinent’ formation could wipe out humans: Study

Six Portuguese youths are taking 32 nations to the European Court of Human Rights this month for not doing enough to stop global warming, the latest bid to secure climate justice through the courts.

The move was sparked by the massive wildfires that struck Portugal in 2017, killing over 100 people and charring swathes of the country.

Aged 11 to 24, the young people say they are suffering from anxiety over their health and "having to live with a climate that is getting hotter and hotter" with more natural disasters.

Some claim allergies and breathing problems both during the fires and after, conditions at risk of persisting if the planet keeps warming.

Underscoring the potential impact of the case in terms of forcing countries to act, the Strasbourg-based court's Grand Chamber will examine the arguments on September 27, something that is reserved for exceptional cases.

The youths argue that excessive carbon emissions are infringing in particular the right to life and the right to the respect of private and family life.

"This is truly a David and Goliath case," said Gearoid O Cuinn, director of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), which is supporting the youths' case.

An ECHR ruling, expected in several months, in favour of the plaintiffs would be binding on the 46 member states of the Council of Europe and potentially constitute legal jurisprudence on climate cases.

Nations would have to "rapidly accelerate their climate mitigation efforts", said Gerry Liston, a GLAN lawyer assisting the youths.

"In legal terms, it would be a game changer."

But first, the court will rule on the admissibility of the case, since the Portuguese youths filed directly to the ECHR without first seeking recourse in domestic courts.

They argue that trying to file separate cases in all 32 countries would be an "excessive and disproportionate burden" on an issue requiring urgent attention.

An ECHR source confirmed that it was a "unique case" in terms of the number of nations targeted by a single complaint.

The court has not previously ruled on member obligations with regard to climate change.

The youths say governments are contributing to warmer temperatures with carbon emissions that are provoking heat waves and wildfires in their country in particular.

"Governments around the world have the power to stop this, and Europe's governments are choosing not to stop this," said Catarina dos Santos Mota, one of the young Portuguese.

Two other climate cases involving France and Switzerland were examined by the ECHR in March, though no rulings have yet been issued.

According to the UN Environment Programme, the number of legal cases worldwide linked to climate challenges doubled between 2017 and 2022.

Six young people sue 32 European states over climate change

A recent study showed that individuals who worked remotely full-time produce less than half the greenhouse gas emissions of their office-bound counterparts. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focused on employees in the United States and presented insights into the environmental implications of remote work arrangements.

Greenhouse gas reduction for full-time remote workers

The research found that employees in the US who worked from home exclusively were projected to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial 54 per cent when compared to their office-working counterparts. This reduction stems from several factors, primarily a decrease in office energy consumption and the elimination of daily commuting emissions.

Challenges for hybrid workers

However, the study also highlighted a significant distinction for hybrid workers—those who split their time between remote and office work. These individuals did not achieve the same level of emissions reduction as full-time remote workers. In fact, one day of remote work per week only led to a minimal two per cent reduction in emissions.

This is because the energy savings from not being in the office were offset by factors like increased non-commuting travel when working from home. Researchers from Cornell University and Microsoft used extensive datasets, including Microsoft employee data, to model the predicted greenhouse gas emissions of various work arrangements. They analysed five categories of emissions, encompassing office and residential energy usage. Surprisingly, the study found that IT and communications technology had a negligible impact on individuals' carbon footprints related to work, reported the Guardian.

While remote work presents a notable opportunity for reducing emissions, it's essential to plan carefully to maximise these benefits. The study revealed that remote workers tend to increase non-work-related travel, including more driving and flying. Additionally, homes are not always optimised for decarbonisation, and some appliances may be less energy-efficient than their office counterparts.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a remote work revolution, with many individuals relocating from high-density commuting zones to rural, low-density areas. However, this shift may result in longer commuting distances for hybrid workers and increased use of private vehicles, potentially leading to a greater carbon footprint.

While the study's findings are specific to the United States, the underlying modelling and trends are likely applicable to other regions, including Europe and Japan.

Greenhouse gas reduction for full-time remote workers The research found that employees in the US who worked from home exclusively were projected to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial 54 per cent when compared to their office-working counterparts. This reduction stems from several factors, primarily a decrease in office energy consumption and the elimination of daily commuting emissions. Challenges for hybrid workers However, the study also highlighted a significant distinction for hybrid workers—those who split their time between remote and office work. These individuals did not achieve the same level of emissions reduction as full-time remote workers. In fact, one day of remote work per week only led to a minimal two per cent reduction in emissions. This is because the energy savings from not being in the office were offset by factors like increased non-commuting travel when working from home. Yet, individuals who worked remotely for two or four days a week saw substantial emissions reductions of up to 29 per cent when compared to their on-site counterparts. Remote work is great for the environment as emissions are massively reduced. Here's how

The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement - 197 nations agreed to limit global temperature rise. The goal can only be reached if net emissions can be reduced to zero by 2050 and to do that bit the UK government has made some provisions but there is still a long way to go.

UK falls behind its Paris Agreement goals as it needs to reduce its emissions by 68% by 2030

The British government and the water regulator might have violated the environmental law regarding the regulation of untreated sewage releases, said the country's environmental protection watchdog on Tuesday (September 12). The officials might have done so by failing to stem the raw sewage dumped into the rivers by water companies in England, said the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP).

Public authorities may have misinterpreted the law: OEP

The OEP believes the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), regulator Ofwat and the government’s Environment Agency may have misinterpreted the law by allowing raw sewage to be discharged by water companies more frequently than legally allowed.

“Where we interpret the law to mean that untreated sewage discharges should generally be allowed only in exceptional circumstances...it appears that the public authorities may have interpreted the law differently,” said the OEP Chief Regulatory Officer Helen Venn.

The exceptional circumstances for discharging raw sewage from storm overflows on the network include ‘very heavy rainfall,’ to stop it from backing up into homes. However, campaigners have alleged that the water companies are discharging much more often than they should.

The OEP, a watchdog set up after Brexit to replace the enforcement powers of the European Commission, was called upon to investigate by the charity WildFish, which said that the regulators were failing in their duty to enforce the law.

“The guidance provided by government to regulators, and the permitting regime they put in place for the water companies, possibly allow untreated sewage discharges to occur more regularly than intended by the law without risk of sanction,” said the OEP.

Last year, water companies in England alone released raw sewage 301,091 times – an average of 825 times a day – into rivers and the sea, according to data from the Environment Agency.

Not the first time

The recent possible failure to comply with the law by the three agencies is related to urban wastewater treatment laws, which derive from European Union law.

A small coastal town in Portugal has become the talking point on internet after viral videos showed red wine spilling through its streets on Sunday (September 10).

The town of São Lourenco do Bairro and its streets were painted red after two tanks owned by Levira Distillery – a local winemaker, carrying a whopping 600,000 gallons of the booze, suddenly gave way, according to a report in the New York Post.

The locals, as surprised as the netizens, looked on with bewilderment as the wine, nearly enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool, flowed down a steep hill and onto the myriad streets of the town.

The spill, although accidental, was so massive that the local authorities had to trigger an environmental alert. They were later forced to divert the wine to stop it from contaminating the nearby Certima River. The Anadia Fire Department stepped in, blocked off the road and diverted the wine into a nearby field.

Invasive species are wreaking havoc and upending ecosystems faster than ever before. Humans have been unable to stop its spread, costing the global economy over $400 billion every year, according to a report by the United Nations published on Monday (September 4).

‘Gross underestimation’

With the rise in the spread of invasive species, the world has seen economic damages quadruple every decade since 1970, the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) noted in its findings.

The failure to stem the tide of the so-called “alien species” in the world’s ecosystems also costs the world at least $423 billion in damages and income every year, according to the UN assessment. To put this number into perspective, the amount is equivalent to the GDP of Denmark or Thailand, but the scientists have called it a “gross underestimation”.

The findings are based on a four-year assessment of the global impacts of some 3,500 harmful invasive species conducted by a team of 86 researchers from 49 countries. Notably, so-called alien invaders also played a key role in 60 per cent of recorded plant and animal extinctions.

‘Alien species’ wreak havoc across the world

From water hyacinths choking fishing grounds and water bodies to rats and snakes gobbling up bird eggs and wiping out entire species in the Pacific and non-native grasses that helped fuel and intensify the deadly wildfires in Hawaii; environmental chaos has been sown by invasive species across the world.

Not to mention the mosquitoes exposing new regions to Zika, yellow fever, dengue and other diseases. The report also noted the role of more than 37,000 so-called alien species that have taken root far away from their places of origin.

At least three-quarters of the negative impacts from invasive species occur on land, particularly in forests, woodlands, and farmed areas, said the UN report.

Simply put, invasive species are plants or animals, often moved due to human activity, which can take root – literally in some cases – and have detrimental effects on an environment. While the effects are slow to materialise they can be catastrophic.

“We also know this is a problem that is going to get much, much worse,” said ecologist Helen Roy, co-chair of the IPBES. This comes as warmer temperatures due to climate change are expected to make things worse and drive the expansion of invasive species.

The report has also concluded by saying that factors such as economic expansion, population increase and climate change “increase the frequency and extent of biological invasions and the impacts of invasive alien species.”

But we only have ourselves to blame. According to the researchers, whether by accident or on purpose non-native species end up on the other side of the world due to human activity.

More often than not, invasive species are accidental arrivals like ballast water of cargo ships or a tourist’s suitcase.

They also said that this is hard evidence of the rapid expansion of human activity which has radically altered natural systems and tipped the Earth to a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene.

How big is threat of invasive species?

“Invasive alien species are a major threat to biodiversity and can cause irreversible damage to nature, including local and global species extinctions, and also threaten human wellbeing,” wrote Roy, Professor Anibal Pauchard and Professor Peter Stoett, who led the research.

The researchers also noted that while “specific species that inflict damage vary from place to place, these are risks and challenges with global roots but very local impacts facing people in every country, from all backgrounds and in every community – even Antarctica is being affected.”

“Invasive species are affecting not only nature but also people and causing terrible loss of life,” said Pauchard who is also the report co-chair.

One of the most recent examples of this is the wildfires in Hawaii last month which claimed the lives of at least 115 people and are said to be driven by flammable invasive grasses which, scientists say, were brought over from Africa as livestock pasture.

According to Roy, invasives can show up in several forms, including microbes, and invertebrates but plants, and animals often have the greatest environmental impact, particularly predators.

What can we do about it?

Once introduced and established in an environment, getting rid of invasive species is difficult. While some small islands have witnessed some success in eradicating invasive rats and rabbits with trapping and/or poisoning; larger populations pose a challenge.

The report also noted that only 17 per cent of countries have measures, laws or regulations to manage this onslaught of invasive species.

“Birds in New Zealand had no experience with rats until humans came and brought rats. Their nests are at ground level,” said Pauchard, speaking about how many island species had previously evolved without predators which made them “very naive”.

Meanwhile, invasive plants often reportedly leave their seeds lying dormant in the soil for years.

Therefore, the IPBES outlines general strategies to combat invasive species which include prevention, eradication and then, failing that, containment. However, prevention measures through border biosecurity and import controls are most effective, said the scientists.

In a bid to save biodiversity, at least 190 countries have committed to placing 30 per cent of land and water under protection by 2030, in line with a global treaty hammered out in Montreal last December.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework also aims to reduce the rate at which invasive alien species spread by half by 2030.

Environmental activists have sued the South African environment minister and the national air-quality officer and a regional unit of ArcelorMittal South Africa for failing to take action against the company over its air pollution, according to a report by Bloomberg.

According to a statement sent through email on Tuesday, the Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance and groundWork filed the lawsuit at the South African High Court. They assert that the government has not taken any action to reduce emissions from ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited’s largest steel plant, located in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.

The lawsuit is similar to one that was filed against the government in 2022 and won by activists including groundWork because of air pollution from coal-fired plants run by Eskom Holdings SOC Limited and Sasol Limited.

Judge Colleen Collis of the South African High Court concluded in that in the 2022 case, the Environment Minister Barbara Creecy was required by the Constitution to adopt and enforce laws to promote cleaner air.

Presently, the activists claim that Arcelor’s South African branch has failed to reduce air pollution for years, even after installing technology to control emissions. The parties filing the action assert that the government acted leniently and lowered emission restrictions for the company.

“The minister, instead of bringing industries into compliance, continues to allow for weaker limits,” Bloomberg quoted the activists as saying in the court papers. “This erodes the rights of the people living in the area, who are breathing dangerous levels of pollution.”

The southern and eastern regions of Johannesburg have the highest concentration of coal-burning enterprises, contribution to severe air pollution. Coal being the primary fuel for manufacturing petrochemicals, steel, and ferroalloys, provides more than 80 per cent of South Africa’s electricity, has also played a role in the economic development of the continent’s most industrialised country.

“This erodes the rights of the people living in the area, who are breathing dangerous levels of pollution.” The southern and eastern regions of Johannesburg have the highest concentration of coal-burning enterprises, contribution to severe air pollution. South African environment authorities sued over Arcelor pollution: Report

A judge in Montana, United States, who heard the country’s first constitutional climate trial earlier this year, has ruled in favour of the more than a dozen young plaintiffs, on Monday (August 14). This comes after 16 young people filed a lawsuit that sought to hold the officials in the state accountable for their inaction on climate change, in the US state.

About the court order

In the order, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley ruled that Montana’s continued development of fossil fuels violates a clause in the state constitution that guarantees its citizens the right to a “clean and healthful environment.”

“Plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life-support system,” said Seeley in more than a 100-page ruling after the case closed on June 20.

Notably, Montana is one of several states that have explicit environmental guarantees in their state constitution.

While the verdict will not stop the state from burning fossil fuels, it will reverse a recently passed state law that prevented government agencies from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for development projects involving fossil fuels.

What was the case about?

The case, Held v. Montana, has been closely watched as similar litigations have been filed across the country. The lawsuit centres around the state’s constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment,” and was filed by plaintiffs whose ages range from five to 22.

Roger Sullivan, an attorney for the young plaintiffs, from the non-profit Our Children’s Trust, had alleged that Montana’s ongoing permitting of polluting fuels like coal and gas is contributing to a global crisis, including, “heat, drought, wildfires, air pollution, violent storms, loss of wildlife, watching glaciers melt.”

He also argued that because of these effects, the young people he represents are disproportionately suffering psychologically and healthily. While some plaintiffs testified, the trial also witnessed the rare instance in which climate experts were questioned on the witness stand.

Lawyers are ‘over the moon’

“My initial reaction is, we’re pretty over the moon,” said Melissa Hornbein, an attorney who represented the plaintiffs in the 2020 lawsuit, according to The Guardian. She added, “It’s a very good order.”

In a statement, the attorneys for the plaintiffs called the court’s decision a “sweeping win”.

Julia Olson, chief legal counsel and executive director of Our Children’s Trust said, “Today, for the first time in US history, a court ruled on the merits of a case that the government violated the constitutional rights of children through laws and actions that promote fossil fuels, ignore climate change, and disproportionately imperil young people.”

It added, “This is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy, and for our climate. More rulings like this will certainly come.” Notably, the non-profit has brought similar youth-led constitutional climate lawsuits in four other states, including Hawaii, which is set to go to trial in June 2024.
