LA wildfires: Biden pledges federal aid as death toll rises to 10; National Guard called in to battle 'nightmare'

The death toll from the devastating wildfires rampaging the United States Los Angeles area has risen to five, said officials on Wednesday (Jan 8), warning that it may rise further.
In America's second-biggest city, over 1,000 buildings have been incinerated by wildfires that have left firefighters overwhelmed by their speed and ferocity. In the upmarket Pacific Palisades, an area known for its luxurious and celebrity residents, winds have led to fireballs leaping from one house to the next, destroying some of the most desirable real estate.

Death toll grows

Updating the media on the death toll, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that his crews were overwhelmed by the scale and the speed of the disastrous fires.
“We're doing the very best we can. But no, we don't have enough fire personnel in LA County between all the departments to handle this,” he said.

Talking to radio station KNX, Luna said that the death toll has unfortunately “grown to five,” warning it could rise further.
“Remember, this is still a very fluid situation. There's zero containment on this fire. I'm really praying we don't find more, but I don't think that's going to be the case,” he added.

Climate change is a term that has become increasingly common over the years. With many heatwaves, natural disasters and extreme weather conditions being attributed to the climate crisis, it is hard to ignore its grim presence in our lives. But what does it mean exactly?

What is climate change?

Climate change is a long-term shift in the weather patterns and temperatures globally. While it can also happen naturally, human activities like the burning of fossil fuels have been the driving cause of it since the 1800s.
According to the United Nations, the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has surged by 1.2 degrees Celsius. Experts have warned of limiting global temperature rise to not more than 1.5 degrees Celsius to prevent catastrophic environmental impacts, with various international agreements and frameworks in place, such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, projections based on current global policies indicate the Earth could experience warming of up to 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Extreme weather events wreaked havoc globally

The year 2024 saw deadly natural disasters fueled by climate change. Increasingly frequent heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, droughts and floods left thousands dead and millions affected with damages in billions.
The Atlantic hurricane season recorded 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes–five of which were Category 3 or higher. Deadly hurricanes Beryl, Debby, Helene, and Milton claimed over 330 lives and caused damage costing hundreds of billions of dollars.
More than 670 people died in Papua New Guinea after an earthquake and landslide hit northern parts of the country. Floods and landslides also wreaked havoc in Southern Brazil killing nearly 60.
In Afghanistan and Pakistan, more than 300 people died in May when flash flooding damaged or completely destroyed at least 6,000 homes after heavy rainfall.
In southern India, landslides in Kerala followed by torrential rain resulted in nearly 400 deaths in the Wayanad district. Super typhoon Yagi killed nearly 600 people in Southeast Asia in September. Flash floods in southeast Spain and western Europe in late October resulted in over 200 deaths.
Climate change also increased droughts, torrential rainfall, and heat that damage crops resulting in food shortages, increased prices and losses for the agriculture industry globally.

Deadly heatwaves claimed lives across the world

While natural disasters resulted in an increased death toll this year, heatwaves across the Earth were felt by the majority of people during the summer of 2024.
Most parts of the world experienced record-high temperatures and heatwaves that claimed thousands of lives, although the exact number cannot be determined.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the global mean surface air temperature was 1.54 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average from January to September.
July 22 marked the hottest day on Earth after the global average temperature reached a record high of 17.15 degrees Celsius, according to NASA, the previous record being 17.09 degrees Celsius observed a day earlier on July 21.
Hundreds of deaths have been reported across Asia due to heatwaves, with people most impacted in countries including India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar after experiencing temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius for several days due to climate change and El Niño effect.
A report released by HeatWatch claims that India recorded over 700 deaths and over 40,000 heatstroke cases attributed to climate change.
According to reports, over 1,300 people lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June after temperatures soared to 52 degrees Celsius.
Similar trends were seen in Western African countries like Nigeria and Ghana which witnessed an increase in patients with heat-related illnesses after temperatures recorded over 40 degrees Celsius in February. Australia also experienced an intense heatwave that affected several areas of the country with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.
Southern and Southeastern nations of Europe recorded over 19 deaths due to a heatwave after several regions recorded scorching high temperatures, especially in Greece and Italy, where most fatalities were recorded.
Southern and Western regions of the United States were severely hit by heatwaves, recording over 1,000 deaths, with the hottest temperature recorded at 54 degrees Celsius at Furnace Creek, Death Valley.
Mexico recorded over 150 deaths that could be linked to heat-related illnesses.

2024: A wake-up call

The number of lives lost due to just weather events directly is alarming. Many other innocent lives are lost due to climate change indirectly when it takes the form of deadly illnesses such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases due to air pollution, stroke, cancer and many other leading causes that can be linked to climate change.
The year 2024 should be a wake-up call for governments, policymakers, and us as individuals. Climate change is a pressing issue and we need to look for solutions that can only be addressed by global cooperation and commitment.
Global bodies and governments should implement strict environmental measures like transitioning to renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.
Although this requires significant investments, we cannot ignore the immediate need to adapt to sustainable solutions and technologies to reduce our carbon footprint.
Looking back at 2024, if we don’t take urgent actions, one day our planet may not be fit for humanity to live on.
Every life matters. Every action counts, even at an individual level.

New Delhi, India
2024 was undoubtedly a nightmare for allergy sufferers. Climate change has led to unpredictable temperatures and smoke-filled cities, pushing allergy seasons to new extremes.
Let's analyse why 2024 was a perfect storm for allergies and what is next.

How does climate change fuel allergy seasons?

Climate change is reshaping and changing the allergy seasons worldwide. The ideal condition for plants to generate more pollen is created by rising temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels.

Recent research indicates that certain allergic plants, such as ragweed, are now releasing pollen for much longer periods, which makes those sensitive to it suffer for a longer time.

Record-breaking temperatures and their impact on allergies

Extreme hot summers have been recorded for the last few years, with very huge consequences for allergic patients. The year 2024 is one of the warmest years on record, with temperatures reaching extreme highs on the globe. These extreme temperatures have thereby hastened the growth of plants, particularly due to the heat island effect in urban areas.
Additionally, dry landscapes caused by high temperatures made it easier for dust and pollen to fly into the atmosphere. All allergy patients claimed that they experienced worse symptoms, from watery eyes to asthma attacks, due to the extended exposure.

A trigger for allergens: Unpredictable weather patterns

Except for the temperature, 2024 welcomed a series of storms and dry spells that did a lot to disturb the entire ecosystem with sudden floods of allergens. Flooding left a pool of stale water and debris of dead plants around which thrived mold spores.

Meanwhile, dry and windy conditions spread allergens over larger areas. Nandini, a 22-year-old, says, "In November, my allergies were relentless. The rise in pollution made my health even worse. I could not escape the mold inside or the pollen outside."

Air pollution and it's role in aggravating allergies

In November 2020, the maximum AQI reported was 518. In 2021 November, the maximum reached 700. In 2022, it was 555, and 528 in 2023. But the highest was reported in November 2024, when the AQI reached a record high of 795.
Numbers are telling a death story. On Diwali 2024, Delhi recorded its 24-hour average AQI as 330, higher compared to previous years, and in fact, the most polluted Diwali in the last three years.
And it didn't stop there. November 2024 saw AQI levels consistently reach hazardous levels. Hospitals were overwhelmed by patients with pollution-related illnesses, and many residents, especially those having pre-existing respiratory conditions, had a hard time breathing.
On November 14, GRAP Stage 3 was activated, which wasn't put into the more severe Stage 4 restrictions until AQI increased to 400 on November 18.
25-year-old Palak says, “My allergies turned into constant coughing and sneezing, even air purifiers didn’t help. My skin also suffered a lot.”
Mehar, an asthma patient, said, "The hazardous air of 2024 unleashed a hell for my allergy. Cough, sneezing, and congestion were like a never-ending thing."

Why allergy seasons are getting longer every year

Climate change makes pollen seasons start earlier and last longer. In some regions, pollen counts were observed in November 2024, a month that is typically free of allergens.
Scientists attributed this shift to warmer winters and frosts that delay the plants' dormancy, allowing them to continue producing allergens. If left unchecked, this trend could indicate nearly year-round allergy seasons in the coming decades.

Asthma rise: A silent crisis of 2024

Allergies and asthma go hand-in-hand, and it is one of the years in which there was an increase in asthma attacks. This time, with pollen, pollution, and smoke all contributing factors, it was experienced by those who never had one. Experts say this will continue unless climate change is stopped
The connection between climate change and worsening allergies is no longer a distant concern. This is a reality we are living by. 2024 has shown us that inaction costs us not just melting glaciers and increasing sea levels, but also our health that we are losing, the air we breathe, and the lives that are affected by seemingly insignificant things like allergies.
The question now is no longer how are we adapting, but how far are we willing to protect ourselves and our coming generations. Addressing the situation is not just about saving the country or planet, it is saving our health, ourselves, and where every breath feels like a battle we have to fight for.
So, should we act, or will we let the seasons grow longer, the air grow heavier, and the suffering worsen? The choice is ours, but the clock is ticking.

While European Nations tout ambitious climate agendas, the ultra-wealthy are jetting off on lavish holidays, emitting staggering CO2 levels. A recent report reveals that private jets contributed over 520,000 tonnes of emissions in 2023, with a single flight releasing nearly as much CO2 as an average European citizen does in a year. Can Europe’s leaders reconcile their climate promises with this blatant hypocrisy?

Private Jets: Environmental Impact Exposed

The alarming rate at which the environment is changing around us is something to be taken note of. Climate change is no more a term that we loosely discuss but something that we are experiencing and adjusting to daily. Flooding of cities is now a common occurrence even as cities and towns grapple with water shortages. Hills are no longer as cool as they used to be during our childhood as deforestation and lack of water create an unprecedented resource shortage. The drastic climate changes are mostly due to humans, as we continue to overexploit and undervalue resources. Something that is beautifully highlighted in the series of documentary shorts that have been backed by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water. The 17-part docu-series Faces of Climate Resilience highlights the work of unsung heroes in remote villages and towns of India.

Some tackling forest fires, to some raising awareness of climate change among slum dwellers in big cities, to some providing weavers with proper infrastructure after floods, to some planting trees to save their villages, the stories are truly heartening.

Each episode spans a little over 3 minutes but gives a solid account of how some Indians are taking the initiative to make their environment and neighbourhood a better place to live in.

From villages of Uttarakhand, and Orrissa, to towns of Kerala and Rajasthan and Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, these samaritans have been spreading awareness, educating the next generations on how to preserve resources and stop the degradation of natural habitats through scientific but easy steps.

The project is in collaboration with India Climate Collaborative, Edelgive Foundation, and Drokpa Films and strives to make climate change more tangible through the lived experiences of people.

Shot in various states in nine months from 2021 -22, these short episodes give one hope that all is not lost just yet, thanks to the initiative of a handful of good citizens who are not only taking strides to make their environment better but also passing their knowledge to the next generations for a better tomorrow.

Faces of Climate Resilience docu-series: An important watch on climate change

South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday that much of the country's climate goals were unconstitutional, handing a landmark victory to young environmental activists, who wept for joy on the court steps.

The first such case in Asia, brought by children and teenagers who named an embryo as a lead plaintiff, claimed that South Korea's legally binding climate commitments were insufficient and unmet, violating their constitutionally guaranteed human rights.

"Just now, the Constitutional Court ruled that it is unconstitutional that there is no government goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 2031 to 2050," Yoon Hyeon-jeong, one of the young activists involved, said.

"It was ruled that our right to live a safe life from the climate crisis should be guaranteed," she added, barely managing to finish her sentence as she choked up with tears.

The court ruled that the government's limited climate targets violate the constitution as they do "not sufficiently protect the basic rights of the people," the legal representatives of the plaintiffs said after the hearing.

The case, known as "Woodpecker et al. v. South Korea" after the in-utero nickname of an embryo, now a toddler, involved -- included four petitions by children.

In 2021, South Korea made a legally binding commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 290 million tonnes by 2030, and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

To meet this goal, the country needs to reduce emissions by 5.4 per cent every year from 2023, a target they have so far failed to meet.

As a result of the ruling, Seoul will now have to revise its climate goals, said Youn Se-jong, a lawyer for the plaintiffs

"The National Assembly and the government of the Republic of Korea will have to revise regulations related to the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and present greenhouse gas reduction goals considering the rights of future generations," Youn said.

"With today's ruling, we have confirmed that climate change is a matter of our fundamental rights and that everyone has the right to be safe from it," he said.

Seoul's Ministry of Environment said in a statement that it respected the court's decision.

The ministry said it plans "to faithfully implement follow-up measures".

The plaintiffs had argued that unless Seoul moved more quickly on climate goals, future generations would not only have to live in a degraded environment, but also have to bear the burden of undertaking massive greenhouse gas reductions.

This, the case claims, would mean that the state has violated its duty to protect their fundamental rights.

"Just as Germany has further strengthened its reduction targets for 2040 and revised the goal for 2045 after their ruling, we expect Seoul's 2030 reduction targets will be strengthened" and expanded, he said.

Outside the Seoul court, 12-year-old plaintiff Han Jeah, who started the case aged 10 -- said the verdict was "like a wish came true."

"So I wanted to show people through this lawsuit how much we (young people) know and how deeply we worry about climate change."

Sweden on Wednesday (Aug 21) began a killing spree to eliminate nearly 500 brown bears, or 20 per cent of the animal's population in the Nordic country, despite outcry by environment activists who call it more of a 'macho pride' issue than something motivated by real ecological concerns.

The brown bears can be shot dead as part of the annual license to kill. The hunting season will go into October 15. For this season, 486 brown bears can be killed in the so-called licensed hunt.

Activists say that a century of conservation efforts will go to waste after campaigns and laws had brought back the population of brown bears that were once killed to near-extinction by hunters.

But after the licensed hunt of 2023, the population dropped to 2,450.

Kindberg noted that only a few cubs are born at a time, and that too once in two to three years. “During the hunt, it is very difficult to tell females from males, and the females are much more valuable to the population. Therefore, you risk ending up in a situation that may take a very long time to repair.”

In addition to the annual licensed hunts, brown bears are allowed to be killed in 'protective' hunts if they're considered damaging to property or threat to life.

Last year, 648 bears were shot during licensed hunting, while 74 more were killed during protective hunting.

Climate change making wildfires intense

Days are becoming longer because of the climate crisis, a new analysis has suggested. This has happened due to the mass melting of polar ice, which is reshaping the planet. Scientists have said that the phenomenon is a striking demonstration of how humanity's actions are transforming the Earth and even affecting its rotation speed and axis.

The Moon's gravitational pull and internal processes in the core and mantle were the main forces governing these motions. However, the melting of ice sheets is currently interfering with these natural processes.

The latest paper, published on Monday (Jul 15) in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that water flowing from Greenland and Antarctica is resulting in more mass around the equator.

According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift".

The movement of the Earth's rotating axis with respect to the crust is known as polar motion. In the latest study, researchers at ETH Zurich have improved their basic understanding of the same by using state-of-the-art AI models.

They found that if greenhouse gas emissions keep rising, they will eventually become more powerful than the Moon's tidal force. The Moon has been regulating the constant lengthening of days for billions of years.

Also read: NASA warns against 180-ft asteroid hurtling towards Earth at scary speed According to the study, which was also published in Nature Geoscience on July 12, the underlying mechanics of the planet and climate change are causing Earth's spin axis to "shift". "We humans have a greater impact on our planet than we realize. And this naturally places great responsibility on us for the future of our planet," said Benedikt Soja, Professor of Space Geodesy at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich. Studies on how climate change affects mating patterns of animals have been coming out in the recent past. Now, a new analysis has posited that certain insects may be facing difficulty in finding mates because sexual behaviour is connected to their body colour, which in turn is often affected by atmospheric temperatures.

One insect in question is the ambush bug. Darker male ambush bugs warm up more easily on cold mornings. That will help them get sexual partners faster than their brighter counterparts.

A review article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution pointed out how sexual selection is affected by colour patterns in male ambush bug.

The expression of insect colours in terms of quantity and quality can be impacted by environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, and solar radiation, noted the study. Temperature directly affects pigment production.
Insects in colder environments tend to be darker, as melanin production is greater.

"The selective advantage of this response to environmental temperature is that darker bodies can absorb more solar radiation than lighter bodies, allowing darker individuals to remain active for longer periods in colder regions, which may increase reproductive success and feeding rates," said the study, citing earlier research.

Climate crisis may be costing some insects their sex lives, suggests study. Here is how

“Summarise this text for me.”

“Make me an image of Mars, but goofy.”

“Can birds think?”

These are some of the useful and outlandish requests that we frequently make to AI software like ChatGPT, Dall E and Bard.

Some of us even talk to chatbots like Meta AI just for fun or to kill time.

But somewhere in a data centre in a remote part of the world, all our requests are being processed. The answers presented on our screens, to be hurriedly consumed, do not appear out of thin air. They are processed using massive computing power, often on what are called ‘supercomputers.’

These supercomputers are run on real-life resources like water, fossil fuels, and even nuclear energy.

Sasha Luccioni, the climate lead for the AI company Hugging Face, and her team conducted research and found that 500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide was produced just in the training of ChatGPT’s GPT3 model—the equivalent of over a million miles driven by average gasoline-powered cars.

So why are we not focusing on artificial intelligence’s not-so-hidden cost to the environment? How does this fare in the era of the climate crisis?

The Data Centre: A massive fuel-eating system

Contrary to popular belief, each colourful WhatsApp sticker that we ask Meta AI to generate is processed at a physical data centre.

A data centre is a large group of linked computers used for remote storage and processing.

In a nutshell, it processes our requests and gives us the final products.

But these centres consume massive amounts of energy and use natural resources.

They run on fossil fuels, which stress an already overused planet.

The Cost of Cooling

All machines, including massive groups of computers, produce a lot of heat while working.

Just like an air conditioner cools the room while producing heat, a processor or a computer also produces heat while computing.

This heat needs to be cooled down.

To do this, water, often fresh water, is used by companies. Traditional air conditioning systems, which use less water but more electricity, are also used to reduce the temperature.

This creates further pressure on the environment where the data centres are located, causing local communities to face acute water shortages.

After a lengthy legal battle, it was revealed that Google’s data centres in the city of Dalles, Oregon, used a quarter of the town’s water supply.

The environmental costs of AI are high, but can humanity function without this advanced technology?

Necessary Evil?

Artificial intelligence has done wonders in battling the climate emergency, to an extent. Using AI models, scientists can now create detailed maps of flood-affected areas, identify at-risk communities, and help authorities take action.

Meteorological departments across the globe depend on advanced AI to predict the weather, making such technology crucial for the world's food system.

“AI useful to aid in the prediction of which areas are identifiable as most vulnerable to heat waves and flash floods, but is not likely to support any meaningful mitigation measures” says Maulik, a climate activist.

Artificial intelligence is now essential to human well-being, but the conscious and sustainable use of AI is the need of the hour if we are to continue reaping its benefits.

Sustainable AI

Considering the amount of resources that AI uses (some call it ‘planet-guzzling tech'), it is high time that we stop using it to finish our book reports, create goofy pictures of fictional characters, and entertain us when we are bored.

Responsible use of technology will free up the space for data centres to work on things that benefit humankind while also reducing their carbon footprints.

Old wine in a new bottle?

The world has seen the environmental cost of technology many times before. From the invention of the steam engine to commercial aviation, it is now common knowledge that any advancement increases environmental distress.

This was also on display during the era of cryptocurrency. Crypto-mining also consumes massive amounts of energy, often sourced from resources like coal.

Illegal ‘crypto-farms’ in countries like China became massive sinks of precious resources.

This was strongly opposed and caused governments to take action against such establishments.

But have we learned nothing from history?

Is there a way for us to climb out of this AI-generated hole we find ourselves in?

Way Forward

Apart from the sustainable individual use of AI, it is also essential that big tech companies be forced to reveal their carbon footprint before they launch shiny new products.

But “it would be fanciful to suggest that companies invested in developing artificial intelligence with the overarching goal of maximising profit by trying to cut down on payroll are at all motivated by the climate emergency” says Maulik.

AI supercomputers run on fossil fuels, water, even nuclear energy: How hard is it hitting our planet?

A recent study published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health has revealed that even short-period exposure to air pollution levels meeting the Indian standards can result in deaths. About 33,000 deaths each year can be attributed to PM 2.5 pollution levels across 10 major cities in India.

The study was conducted between 2008 and 2019 in cities including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Shimla. Delhi recorded the highest number of deaths which can be attributed to air being 11.5 per cent of the total deaths, about 12,000 every year. Varanasi recorded 10.2 per cent of the deaths, 830 every year.

The states meeting the national standards also witness numerous death cases attributed to pollution each year. Chennai, Bengaluru, and Shimla recorded about 4.8 per cent (2,100), 4.9 per cent (2,900), and 3.7 per cent (59) of total deaths each year, respectively.

The national standard set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for PM 2.5 particles is 60 micrograms per cubic metre, while WHO states only 15 micrograms per cubic metre in its guidelines. PM 2.5 particles are fine particles of pollution with diameters generally about 2.5 micrometres or smaller.

The researchers studied the data obtained from meteorological instruments, air quality monitors, satellites, and other sources to examine the PM 2.5 pollutants exposure over time. They compared the air quality data with the death records obtained for the 10 cities for the same period.

According to the researchers, the nature of sources of pollution and population may have resulted in a higher number of deaths in cities like Delhi, Varanasi, and Kolkata. However, the main objective of the study was not to compare the numbers but rather to emphasise the need to understand that relatively even low levels of pollution have a significant impact on people's health in the country.

“The insights signal an urgent need to revisit our air quality management strategies that currently focus only on ‘non-attainment cities’, rethink current air quality standards accounting for the lower risk thresholds, and shift from addressing regional to local sources to protect human health effectively,” said Poornima Prabhakaran, director of the Centre for Health Analytics Research and Trends (CHART) at the Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, one of the authors of the research.
