The current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is one of the most frequent flyers in the United Kingdom. The leader of the Conservative Party in Britain has taken more domestic flights than the previous three prime ministers of the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister who often voices his concern to curb Planet warming carbon emissions said that air travel is the most effective use of his time.

As soaring temperatures continue to bake swathes of North America and Europe this month, researchers, on Tuesday (July 25) confirm what <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/temperatures-reach-new-highs-world-witnesses-record-breaking-heat-616853">many speculated</a>, that this weather phenomenon would be “virtually impossible” without human-induced climate change.&nbsp;

From record-breaking temperatures in the United States to life-threatening wildfires burning parts of Europe, we only have ourselves (and our greenhouse gas emissions) to blame as July 2023 may be the hottest month for the planet.&nbsp;

<h2>Record-breaking temperatures ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change</h2>

A new rapid analysis of the scorching temperatures was published by an international team of scientists at the World Weather Attribution which found that the heatwaves in parts of Europe and North America would have been impossible if it was not for human-induced climate change.&nbsp;

“European and North American temperatures would have been virtually impossible without the effects of climate change,” Izidine Pinto of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, one of the authors, told journalists, on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The research also noted that climate change has also caused recent record-setting heatwaves in China, which are to become 50 times “more likely,” when compared to previous years. This comes as the country witnessed its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-records-522-celsius-temperature-in-arid-northwest-616575">record-setting</a> temperature of 52.2 degrees Celsius in Sanbao township in Xinjiang’s Turpan Depression.&nbsp;

Scientists also noted how the extreme weather events witnessed in July across the world would have been “extremely rare” if it was not for climate change.&nbsp;

The rise in greenhouse gas concentrations made the European heatwave 2.5 degrees Celsius hotter than it would have been. They also helped worsen North American heatwaves by two degrees Celsius and also in China by one degree Celsius.&nbsp;

This comes nearly a week after NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt told reporters how July 2023 is not only on track to become the hottest month since records began but also the hottest in “hundreds, if not thousands, of years.”&nbsp;

<h2>Situation to worsen</h2>

“The role of climate change is absolutely overwhelming,” said climate scientist Friederike Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, Imperial College London.&nbsp;

The weather data collected was used to run through computer model simulations to compare today’s climate with that of the past years. Otto and her colleagues at the WWA said they focused on periods when “the heat was most dangerous in each region.”&nbsp;

According to Otto, in the past, it would have been “basically impossible” to witness these record-breaking temperatures and heatwaves happening around the same time. But at the same time, “It’s not surprising from a climatological point of view, that these events are happening at the same time,” said the researcher.&nbsp;

The findings were published using peer-reviewed methods but the study has yet to undergo the formal academic review process.&nbsp;

Researchers from Imperial College London, the Dutch National Weather Service and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, estimated that these severe heatwaves can now be expected once every 15 years in North America, every decade in southern Europe and every five years in China.

Scientists also expect these prolonged periods of extreme heat would be as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/extreme-heatwaves-to-continue-through-august-wmo-adviser-says-618150">frequent</a> as every two to five years if the global temperatures rise over two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;

This is expected to happen around 30 years from now unless countries fulfil their Paris Agreement and cut down emissions. Currently, the average temperatures are estimated to have risen by over 1.1 degrees Celsius.

<h2>About the cause</h2>

These effects have largely been attributed to the generation of greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. “As long as we keep burning fossil fuels we will see more and more of these extremes,” Otto. She added, “I don’t think there’s any stronger evidence that any science has ever presented for a scientific question.”

Scientists also noted that while the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-declares-onset-of-el-nino-says-itll-break-temperature-records-611836">El Nino weather pattern</a> may have contributed to the additional heat in some regions, these extreme events cannot solely be attributed to the phenomenon, as the weather pattern is not expected to strengthen until later on in the year.&nbsp;

They added that these heatwaves will become increasingly likely if measures to slash emissions are not taken.

<h2>Impact and calls for urgent measures</h2>

Recent record-breaking temperatures have also directly impacted human health, caused large-scale crop damage and livestock losses, said the scientists. These adverse effects of heatwaves seen in North America, southern Europe and China have accelerated the need for heat preparedness, they added.&nbsp;

A study published, earlier this month, in the journal Nature Medicine found that Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain saw the highest number of deaths, according to population size, when Europe was hit by the sweltering heatwaves last summer.&nbsp;

It also estimated that more than 61,600 people may have died from heat-related causes across 35 European countries between late May to early September 2022, suggesting that the countries’ heat preparedness efforts fell fatally short.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said they are particularly concerned about people with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and asthma during the heatwaves in Europe and the US.&nbsp;

Last week, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/wmo-warns-about-risk-of-heart-attacks-deaths-amid-intensifying-heatwaves-617213">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)</a> issued a warning about a high risk of deaths due to the extreme weather and said such events will only intensify and the world needs to be better prepared for them.&nbsp;

While we are focusing on the maximum day temperatures, it is the high overnight minimum temperatures that we should be worried about as they have the “biggest health risks”, particularly for vulnerable populations, said WMO senior extreme heat advisor, John Nairn, on July 18.&nbsp;

Yuan Meng, who was born in 2017 in the Beauval zoo in the Loire region of France, was cheered by visitors and zoo staff as he was driven under police escort to Charles de Gaulle airport for a 12-hour Air China flight to the Chinese city of Chengdu which took off in the early evening, an AFP reporter saw.&nbsp;

Trained for several days to get ready comfortably for the trip, the son of Yuan Zi and Huan Huan -- the first pandas loaned to France by the Chinese authorities in 2012 -- did not show much hesitation in climbing into his special cage filled with bamboo for his trip.&nbsp;

"Everything went well. He said goodbye to his parents and his sisters, with tears in the eyes of his keepers," said Rodolphe Delord, head of the zoo.

France-born panda heads to China after an emotional farewell

Gabon became the African nation to launch a debt-for-nature swap, on Tuesday (July 25) and plans to buy up at least $450 million of its government debt in exchange for an eco-friendly blue bond, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The debt-for-nature swaps have recently gained some popularity among conservation finance, particularly after Ecuador struck the biggest deal of its kind and refinanced $1.6 billion of its commercial debt.&nbsp;

<h2>What are ‘debt-for-nature swaps’?</h2>

Debt-for-nature swap is when creditors provide debt relief for developing countries who commit to taking steps towards the conservation of the environment, like decarbonizing the economy, investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, or protecting biodiverse forests or reefs, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).&nbsp;

These so-called swaps can be useful for countries that are most vulnerable to climate change and often unable to afford investment to strengthen climate change-related resilience. Typically, a country’s debt, bought up by banks or specialist investors is replaced with cheaper ones with the help of a multilateral development bank “credit guarantee” or “risk insurance”.&nbsp;

Therefore, these debt-for-nature swaps free up fiscal resources for governments to improve resilience without triggering a fiscal crisis or sacrificing spending on other development priorities, said the IMF.&nbsp;

The supporters of this concept, which was first ideated by the late “godfather of biodiversity,” Thomas Lovejoy,&nbsp;in the 1980s, call it a win-win for financiers, countries and conservationists, as per media reports.

<h2>About Gabon’s deal</h2>

The central African nation’s beaches and coastal waters are home to nearly a third of the global population and the world’s largest population of leatherback turtles, an endangered species.&nbsp;

Citing a regulatory filing, Reuters reported that Gabon on the London Stock Exchange had “launched invitations to tender for purchase by the Republic for cash its 2025 Notes and 2031 Notes”.&nbsp;

The filing has since prompted the three Eurobonds, that it referred, to rise as much as 2.2 cents on the dollar, reported the news agency. Furthermore, the February 2031 maturity rose 2.203 cents to 83.702 cents and the November 2031 maturity jumped 2.129 cents to 83.573 cents.&nbsp;

The Gabonese government offered to buy back the bonds for 85 cents per $1 of the bond. Meanwhile, the 2025 maturity, which rose 1.194 cents to 95.4 cents, is also lower than the offer price of 96.75 cents.

A report by Reuters citing industry sources also said that the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) would provide political risk insurance as it has for Ecuador and Belize.

Earlier this year, Ecuador sealed the world’s largest debt-for-nature swap on record amounting to $1.6 billion which has freed up as much as $18 million every year for the next two decades. The amount currently serves as a consistent revenue stream for the conservation of the Galapagos Islands, one of the world’s most precious ecosystems.

Gabon releases tender for Africa’s first 'debt-for-nature swap': What is it?

The Batagaika crater, the world’s biggest permafrost crater, situated in Russia’s Far East is thawing, reported Reuters on Friday (July 21), which has led scientists to raise an alarm as this “mega slump” already threatens cities and towns across northern and northeastern Russia.&nbsp;

<h2>What is a permafrost crater?</h2>

According to NASA, permafrost is any ground that remains completely frozen at zero degrees Celsius for at least two years straight. These permanently frozen grounds are made with a combination of soil, rocks and sand held together by ice.&nbsp;

Permafrosts are most common in regions near the North and South poles and cover large parts of the Earth, according to the American space agency. Notably, almost a quarter of the land area in the Northern Hemisphere has permafrost underneath but while the ground is frozen the regions with permafrost are not always covered in snow.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Gateway to the underworld’</h2>

Locals near the Batagaika crater call the one-kilometre-long massive gash in the Siberian landscape the “gateway to the underworld.” The crater which first began to appear in the 1960s was a result of deforestation in the area which led to the loss of ground ice that in turn caused the Earth to erode and the land to sink.&nbsp;

“We locals call it ‘the cave-in’,” local resident and crater explorer Erel Struchkov told Reuters. “It developed in the 1970s, first as a ravine. Then by thawing in the heat of sunny days, it started to expand,” he added.

The locals have also noted the crater’s rapid growth. “(Two years ago the edge) was about 20-30 metres away from this path. And now, apparently, it is much closer,” said Struchkov, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Scientists raise alarm over ‘mega-slump’</h2>

What locals in Russia’s Sakha Republic call the “gateway to the underworld” scientists called “a mega-slump,” is growing. A report by Reuters citing Russian scientists said that the country is warming at least 2.5 times faster than the rest of the world. This is also melting the long-frozen tundra that covers about 65 per cent of the world’s largest country in terms of land area.&nbsp;

Nikita Tananayev, lead researcher at the Melnikov Permafrost Institute in Yakutsk, said the slump’s expansion is “a sign of danger.”&nbsp;

Recently, this expansion has threatened to affect cities and towns across&nbsp;northern and northeastern Russia&nbsp;by buckling roadways, splitting apart houses, and disrupting pipelines, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Additionally, the vast wildfires which have intensified recently have reportedly exacerbated the problem. “In future, with increasing temperatures and with higher anthropogenic pressure, we will see more and more of those mega-slumps forming, until all the permafrost is gone,” Tananayev told Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Thawing permafrost to fuel climate change</h2>

While the exact expansion rate of the Batagaika crater remains unknown, the Russian scientist said the soil under the slump, which is about 100 metres deep in some places, contains an “enormous quantity” of organic carbon. This is releasing greenhouse gases stored in the thawed soil into the atmosphere further fuelling the planet’s warming.&nbsp;

“With an increasing air temperature we can expect (the crater) will be expanding at a higher rate,” Tananayev told Reuters, adding that it will lead to more climate warming in the upcoming years. &nbsp;

World’s biggest permafrost crater thaws due to climate change, threatens Russian cities

A <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-023-00795-w">new study</a> has revealed that adopting a vegan diet can have a massive positive impact on the environment, significantly reducing climate-heating emissions, water pollution, land use, wildlife destruction, and water consumption.

The study, which focused on real diets of 55,000 people in the UK and data from 38,000 farms in 119 countries, provided substantial evidence supporting the environmental benefits of vegan diets.

“Our dietary choices have a big impact on the planet. Cutting down the amount of meat and dairy in your diet can make a big difference to your dietary footprint,”&nbsp;Prof Peter Scarborough at Oxford University, who led the research told Guardian.

<h2>The impact of vegan diets</h2>

The research demonstrated that vegan diets resulted in a staggering 75 per cent&nbsp;reduction in climate-heating emissions, water pollution, and land use compared to diets that included over 100g of meat daily.

Moreover, the adoption of a vegan diet cut wildlife destruction by 66 per cent&nbsp;and water usage by 54 per cent, as reported by the Guardian.

<h2>Real diet analysis vs&nbsp;model diets</h2>

Unlike previous studies that relied on model diets and average values, this research used actual diets, providing a more accurate representation of the environmental impact.

The results showed that the types of foods consumed had a more significant effect on environmental impacts than their production methods or locations.

For instance, even the lowest-impact meat, such as organic pork, was found to cause eight times more climate damage than the highest-impact plant, oilseed.

Scientists and experts emphasise the significance of dietary choices in reducing the environmental footprint.

Encouraging individuals to reduce meat and dairy consumption, especially high-meat-eaters, can play a vital role in meeting climate targets.

The study highlighted the need for policies that support a shift towards sustainable diets, particularly in wealthy nations, where a drastic reduction in meat and dairy consumption is required.

<h2>Methane emissions and environmental benefits</h2>

The study revealed a significant difference in methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas produced by cattle and sheep.

Vegan diets showed a remarkable 93 per cent lower methane emissions compared to high-meat diets, emphasising the environmental benefits of plant-based diets.

Experts stress the urgency of adopting sustainable food production practices, encouraging labels on foods to indicate their environmental impact, regulating promotions, and taxing high-carbon foods. While individuals have a role to play in their dietary choices, policy support and innovative agricultural practices are vital in achieving sustainable food production.

The UK government maintains that individuals should make their food choices independently, while recognising the importance of achieving the net-zero target. The farming minister has expressed interest in exploring genetically modified cows that emit less methane as a potential solution.

Vegan diet cuts environmental damage massively, study finds

Spanish environmental activists associated with the group "Futuro Vegetal" recently took a stand against the excessive consumption habits of the wealthy elite, targeting a superyacht and a private jet in their latest acts of protest. In a video released by Futuro Vegetal, activists are seen protesting in front of the superyacht named "Kaos," owned by Nancy Walton Laurie, the billionaire heiress of Walmart.

Holding a banner that read,&nbsp;"You Consume Others Suffer," they expressed their concern about the environmental impact of the extravagant lifestyles of the richest one&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of the world population.

The activists also sprayed the vessel with red and black paint, symbolising the environmental harm caused by such displays of wealth.

<h2>The activists' message</h2>

The activists said&nbsp;that the wealthiest 1 per cent&nbsp;of the global population contribute&nbsp;significantly more to pollution. They assert that this level of consumption is leading humanity toward an adverse future.

“The richest 1% of the world population pollutes more than the poorest 50%,” the activists said in the video.”They are condemning us to a future of pain, misery, and desolation.”

The pursuit of excessive luxury and consumption, according to them, comes at the cost of the habitability of our planet and exceeds the limits of reason. “They are destroying our planet, compromising the habitability of the land and everything, to lead a standard of living that goes beyond the limits of reason,” the activists said.

<h2>Detainment of protesters</h2>

Following their demonstration at the superyacht, the Spanish Civil Guard detained the two activists. However, according to Futuro Vegetal, they were expected to be released on Monday. The group's message garnered significant attention.

<h2>Previous protests&nbsp;</h2>

This protest is not the first act of environmental activism carried out by Futuro Vegetal.

Earlier, the group spray-painted a private jet at the Ibiza airport, causing a temporary shutdown of the runway.

This action was part of their "Jets and Yachts, the Party is Over" campaign, convened by Extinction Rebellion Ibiza. The campaign aims to demand the prohibition of private jets and a cessation of luxury emissions,&nbsp;Futuro Vegetal said.

<h2>Extinction Rebellion's focus on 1%</h2>

Extinction Rebellion (XR), a global climate group, has pledged to target the wealthiest 1% as part of its environmental advocacy. They aim to draw attention to the excessive and wasteful consumption habits of the rich, highlighting that such luxury comes at the expense of "essential resources" that the world "cannot afford" to squander.

Earlier this month, XR activists in Spain protested the excessive water use by golf courses during one of the country's worst droughts on record.

Spanish environmental activists spray-paint Walmart heiress' $300mn superyacht in Ibiza

A year after south korea decided to step up readiness for extreme weather driven by climate change, experts say not enough work is done. Forty or more people have lost their lives in less than a week of heavy rains.

Torrential rain leads to heavy flooding in South Korea

More than 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes as the Spanish island of La Palma witnesses “out of control” wildfires,&nbsp;said the local officials. Meanwhile, the rest of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/millions-battle-record-heatwaves-as-temperatures-dangerously-soar-in-us-europe-616127">Europe</a>, including Spain, swelters amid record-breaking temperatures.&nbsp;

<h2>What is happening on the Spanish islands?</h2>

The wildfire in La Palma began early Saturday in El Pinar de Puntagorda, a wooded area in the north of the island in the Canaries, reported Reuters. This also prompted the regional government to put neighbouring islands, including Tenerife and Gran Granaria, on official alert due to&nbsp;the risk of forest fires.&nbsp;

The wildfire has also forced evacuations from the villages of Puntagorda and neighbouring Tijarafe, as per local authorities. So far, the blaze has affected an area of about 4,500 hectares.&nbsp;

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, said at least 13 houses have been destroyed since Saturday as the fire has advanced. “The fire advanced very quickly,” said Clavijo, adding that the “fire is out of control”.&nbsp;

He also went on to attribute this rapid advancement of the blaze to “the wind, the climate conditions as well as the heatwave that we are living through.”&nbsp;

“There has been some resistance by local people to leaving their homes, but I appeal to people to be responsible,” Clavijo told reporters.&nbsp;

Local officials have also reported the forced evacuation of 50 people from Tenerife, one of the eight Canary Islands since the wildfire broke out on Saturday and destroyed about 60 hectares of land in the region. &nbsp;

Puntagorda mayor Vicente Rodríguez told Spanish media that the fire started within his municipality, adding that the region in recent years has witnessed below-average rainfall.&nbsp;

<h2>Response to the wildfires</h2>

As of Sunday, ten aerial units and 300 firefighters were deployed to bring the wildfire under control on the island, reported Reuters. Meanwhile, King Felipe VI of Spain, also called Clavijo and expressed his support for the people of the Spanish archipelago off Africa’s western coast.&nbsp;

<h2>Wildfire coincides with European heatwave</h2>

The wildfire also began days after the temperature of the ground&nbsp;in some parts&nbsp;of Spain crossed over&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/europe-heatwave-spain-swelters-with-land-temperatures-crossing-60deg-celsius-615490">60 degree&nbsp;Celsius</a> during the deadly heatwave that has been sweeping across parts of Europe, the United States, and China.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/what-is-the-cerberus-heatwave-which-is-boiling-europe-616230">European countries</a> like Spain, Italy and Greece have been experiencing scorching temperatures for the past few days now.&nbsp;

Weather forecasters in Spain have also warned about the risks of more wildfires and no respite from high temperatures any time soon, as night temperatures are unlikely to fall below 25 degree&nbsp;Celsius. Additionally, temperatures in southern Spain are expected to be as high as 44 degree Celsius as the heatwave is predicted to intensify from Monday.&nbsp;

Spain: Thousands evacuated from La Palma island following ‘out of control’ wildfires

United States envoy John Kerry arrived in China on Sunday (July 16), reported the Chinese state media, as the world’s two biggest greenhouse gas emitters look to revive stalled efforts to combat global warming.

<h2>What will US and China envoys discuss?</h2>

The talks between US special envoy on climate change Kerry and his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua will begin on Monday and go on till Wednesday. “<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/heavy-rainfall-in-chongqing-unleashes-havoc-615687">China</a> and the United States will have an in-depth exchange of views” on climate issues, reported the state broadcaster CCTV upon Kerry’s arrival in Beijing.&nbsp;

The meetings will&nbsp;focus on issues such as reducing methane emissions, limiting coal use, curbing deforestation and helping poor countries address climate change, reported Reuters. The talks, observers hope, will raise the bar on ambitions ahead of the upcoming United Nations climate summit, COP28, which will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Dubai, later this year.&nbsp;

The official from Washington, during his visit to Beijing, will talk to Chinese officials “with respect to increasing implementation and ambition and promoting a successful COP28,” said the US state department. Worryingly, several regions across the world have been experiencing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/millions-battle-record-heatwaves-as-temperatures-dangerously-soar-in-us-europe-616127">record-breaking temperatures</a>.&nbsp;

<h2>Ease in diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing</h2>

It is also worth noting that the bilateral climate talks between US and China had stalled, back in August, after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the democratically-governed island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory, and the Chinese infuriated.&nbsp;

Additionally, former US president Donald Trump’s administration put tariffs on Chinese goods, including solar panels, while Washington also introduced a law blocking imports from China’s Xinjiang region where Washington believes Beijing uses forced labour.

However, both countries have recently said that they should be able to collaborate on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/what-is-the-cerberus-heatwave-which-is-boiling-europe-616230">climate change</a> despite other disagreements. The informal talks about climate issues resumed during the COP27 summit in Egypt in November.

Prior to his trip to China, the US envoy addressed his objectives at a US House subcommittee hearing on Thursday and said, “What we’re trying to achieve now is really to establish some stability with the relationship without conceding anything.”&nbsp;

Kerry’s visit also follows two other high-level visits from Washington officials&nbsp;– Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen – to Beijing, in a bid to reestablish and stabilise US-China ties.&nbsp;

The talks between Washington and China will be closely watched, including by Republican lawmakers, who criticised Kerry’s trip and reportedly said how he is flying a carbon-spewing private jet halfway across the world to discuss climate change with a political adversary.

However, observers and environmental groups see it as a good sign and have hoped for a positive outcome from these meetings. The scheduled talks showed&nbsp;that climate change “is still the touchstone for the most important bilateral relationship of the world,” said Li Shuo from Greenpeace in Beijing, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

Washington envoy Kerry arrives in Beijing as US, China aim to revive climate cooperation

‘Plastic is everywhere’ is one statement that may be said without any discussion or argument. Plastic’s versatility and affordability have found its way into every part of our lives. It is also no secret that its widespread use has resulted in significant pollution. Plastic comes from fossil fuels and is produced through energy-intensive procedures which depletes resources and emits greenhouse gases. It takes hundreds of years for plastic garbage to disintegrate, and a significant amount of it ends up in landfills or as litter in ecosystems like seas and waterways. This pollution harms wildlife, damages ecosystems, and disrupts the natural balance of our planet.

Being someone who cares about preserving the environment and also having witnessed the many benefits of trees first-hand, I believe that planting trees is one of the pillars in tackling the environmental problems we are facing today. Eco-friendly or sustainable products not only have a lower environmental impact and focus on waste reduction but also promote awareness of the environmental impact of our choices and encourage responsible consumer behaviour.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/new-zealand-takes-lead-in-plastic-bag-ban-expands-restrictions-to-thin-bags-611480">ALSO READ| New Zealand takes lead in plastic bag ban, expands restrictions to thin bags</a>

What can you pick to replace plastic?

There are numerous plants that can serve as plastic substitutes and aid in the restoration of the ecosystem and the habitats of species that have been seriously harmed by plastic pollution. Bioplastics can be made from plants like hemp and bamboo and have a lower environmental impact because they are made from renewable resources and can be composted. The fibres and cellulose obtained from these trees can be processed to create bioplastic materials that can be used as an alternative to traditional plastic in various applications.

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth, capable of reaching maturity within 3 to 5 years. Its rapid growth rate makes it an excellent alternative to plastic and other traditional wood sources which take much longer to grow and produce. It has a lower environmental impact than other crops because it needs less water, pesticides, and fertilisers. Bamboo is a highly versatile material that can be used to make a variety of things, including furniture, flooring, cutlery, apparel, construction materials, and more.&nbsp;

Another important reason to use it instead of plastic is its biodegradable nature. Unlike plastic, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, bamboo products naturally decompose, reducing the burden on landfills and minimising pollution. This biodegradability ensures that bamboo products have a lower long-term impact on the environment compared to non-biodegradable materials and therefore bamboo is extensively grown at many of our sites.

Another plant-based substance that is frequently used as a plastic substitute is a cork, which is also used for flooring, insulation, and as a replacement for synthetic foams. It is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, which is a natural and renewable resource. Cork has great insulating qualities, and is lightweight, buoyant, and impermeable to liquids and gases. The cork tree can regenerate and continue to produce cork for many years as the harvesting procedure is sustainable and does not harm the tree. Cork is biodegradable, and compared to plastic, cork production has a smaller carbon footprint.

The rubber tree is primarily cultivated for latex production, which is used to make natural rubber. Natural rubber is often used as an alternative to synthetic rubbers derived from petroleum. It has a wide range of applications, including tyres, footwear, and various industrial and consumer products.

Tree-based alternatives require awareness and a mind-set change

We can save non-renewable resources like fossil fuels, which are heavily utilised in the manufacture of plastic, by using tree-based alternatives. This encourages the sustainable use of renewable resources while preserving these scarce resources for other crucial applications. As tree-based materials may be recycled or repurposed into new products, these alternatives can also aid in our transition to a circular economy. For instance, cork may be ground and used again in a variety of products, including flooring and insulation. Tree-based alternatives can be recycled and upcycled to increase their lifespan, decrease waste production, and conserve resources.

Understanding the need to change to a sustainable lifestyle for both our sake and the planet is necessary to give up plastic, recognise its effects, and convert to alternatives made of trees. One of the biggest environmental crises today is plastic pollution. Due to its non-biodegradable nature and chemical discharge, it has been causing risks to the environment, wildlife, and people for many years now.&nbsp;

This month is even more important to show our commitment to preserving the environment, with Plastic Free July being a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.&nbsp;

If we don't alter our behaviour for the benefit of the earth, the use of plastic will be another activity that is associated with humanity's disregard for the environment.

ALSO READ| New Zealand takes lead in plastic bag ban, expands restrictions to thin bags What can you pick to replace plastic? There are numerous plants that can serve as plastic substitutes and aid in the restoration of the ecosystem and the habitats of species that have been seriously harmed by plastic pollution. Bioplastics can be made from plants like hemp and bamboo and have a lower environmental impact because they are made from renewable resources and can be composted. The fibres and cellulose obtained from these trees can be processed to create bioplastic materials that can be used as an alternative to traditional plastic in various applications. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth, capable of reaching maturity within 3 to 5 years. Its rapid growth rate makes it an excellent alternative to plastic and other traditional wood sources which take much longer to grow and produce. It has a lower environmental impact than other crops because it needs less water, pesticides, and fertilisers. Bamboo is a highly versatile material that can be used to make a variety of things, including furniture, flooring, cutlery, apparel, construction materials, and more. Environment Watch: Opting for bio-plastics is the way forward

In recent years, the concept of responsible investing has gained significant traction in the world of finance. More and more investors are seeking to align their investment portfolios with their personal values and social concerns. However, the term "responsible" can be subjective and open to interpretation. What does it truly mean to be a responsible investor?

Here, I talk about the depths of responsible investing, exploring its various dimensions and shedding light on the true definition of "responsible."

At its core, responsible investing involves integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into the investment decision-making process. ESG factors encompass a wide range of issues, including climate change, human rights, labour standards, corporate governance, and more. Responsible investors aim to generate financial returns while simultaneously creating a positive impact on society and the environment.

The true definition of "responsible" in responsible investing goes beyond simply avoiding investments in industries or companies that have a negative impact. It encompasses a proactive approach that seeks to identify and support companies that are actively working towards sustainable practices and positive social change. Responsible investors not only consider the risks associated with unsustainable practices but also seize opportunities to invest in businesses that are aligned with their values.

One key aspect of responsible investing is engagement. Responsible investors recognise the power of their capital and actively engage with companies to encourage better practices. Through dialogue, voting on shareholder resolutions, and collaboration with other stakeholders, responsible investors seek to influence corporate behaviour in a positive direction. By doing so, they contribute to the long-term sustainability of companies and the broader economy.

Responsible investing also involves robust research and analysis. Investors need to assess the ESG performance of companies and understand the potential risks and opportunities associated with their operations. This requires access to accurate and reliable data on ESG factors. Fortunately, in recent years, there has been a growing availability of ESG data and rating frameworks that enable investors to make informed decisions. By considering these factors, responsible investors can better identify companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices and good governance.

Another important aspect of responsible investing is diversification. Responsible investors understand that focusing solely on one ESG factor or one industry may not yield the desired impact. By diversifying their portfolios across various sectors and asset classes, responsible investors can spread their influence and support a broad range of sustainable initiatives. This approach helps to mitigate risks and maximize the potential for positive change.

In addition to the financial aspects, responsible investing also recognises the importance of transparency and accountability. Responsible investors expect companies to disclose relevant ESG information and performance metrics. This transparency allows investors to evaluate a company's sustainability practices and make informed investment decisions. Furthermore, responsible investors hold themselves accountable by regularly assessing the impact of their investments and adjusting their strategies as needed.

It is essential to note that responsible investing is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Different investors may have varying priorities and interpretations of what it means to be responsible. Some investors may focus on climate change and renewable energy, while others may emphasize social justice or corporate governance. Responsible investing allows for customisation based on individual values and preferences, enabling investors to align their portfolios with the issues they care about most deeply.

As responsible investing continues to gain momentum, it is crucial to establish clear standards and frameworks. Organisations such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) have been working to develop reporting guidelines and industry standards. These initiatives contribute to the evolution and standardisation of responsible investing practices, enhancing transparency and comparability across companies and sectors.

Responsible investing goes beyond avoiding "sin" industries and encompasses a proactive approach to create positive change. It involves integrating ESG factors into investment decision-making, engaging with companies to promote better practices, conducting thorough research, diversifying portfolios, and prioritising transparency and accountability. Responsible investing recognises the power of capital to drive sustainable outcomes and allows investors to align their financial goals with their personal values. As the field continues to evolve, it is crucial for investors, companies, and regulators to collaborate and refine the true definition of "responsible" in responsible investing.

The true definition of "responsible" in responsible investing extends far beyond mere compliance with regulations. It encompasses a comprehensive approach that considers the environmental, social, and governance aspects of investment decisions. Responsible investors aim to make a positive impact by supporting companies that prioritise sustainability, social responsibility, and good governance practices. By actively engaging with these companies, responsible investors strive to foster positive change and create a more sustainable and equitable future.

ESG Greenlight: Bringing about change through responsible investing

A study published on Tuesday (July 11) found that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-perils-of-deep-sea-mining-demand-for-green-technologies-threatens-marine-life-613959">deep-sea mining</a> could interfere with the expected change of migration patterns of tuna driven by climate change, to areas of the Pacific where mining activities are set to take place. The findings of the research were published alongside a letter by the seafood groups calling for a halt to deep-sea mining plans.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the study find?</h2>

The study published in the Nature Journal npj Ocean Sustainability shows that the migration patterns of tuna would likely alter due to climate change. Three species of tuna and the future biomass of these types of fish were studied in two climate change scenarios with the emissions being moderate and one with high emissions.&nbsp;

According to the study, the total biomass of bigeye (10-11 per cent), skipjack (30-31 per cent) and yellowfish tuna (23 per cent) will increase by 2050 in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/more-than-5000-new-species-discovered-in-planned-mining-zone-of-pacific-ocean-596583">Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ)</a>, an area of the Pacific Ocean south-east of Hawaii, which may soon be subjected to deep-sea mining operations.&nbsp;

The study’s co-author Dr Juliano Palacios Abrantes from the University of British Columbia said, “The high seas harbour a trove of biodiversity, and there are critical sectors of our economy that depend on this biodiversity.”&nbsp;

He added, “There is already uncertainty about the impact of climate change on the health and geographic range of tuna. Deep-sea mining will only add to this uncertainty, further threatening tuna species and associated fisheries.”&nbsp;

<h2>Impact on fish</h2>

Some of the potential <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/deep-sea-mining-pose-risk-to-ocean-ecosystems-study-561965">impacts</a> on the fish, according to the study, could be plumes of sediment, which can travel long distances, preventing feeding or visual communication, not to mention the possible absorption of toxic metals by the species.&nbsp;

Additionally, noise and light pollution from mining activities could disrupt behaviour, affect reproduction rates, cause stress and force changes in migratory routes.&nbsp;

<h2>Seafood industry and deep-mining</h2>

The CCZ could potentially also become a battleground between some of the world’s most valuable fisheries and mining companies. Global Tuna Alliance, which accounts for 32 per cent of global tuna sales, joined hands with the Sustainable Seafood Coalition, made up of 45 British seafood firms, to criticise the 167-nation, United Nations body which regulates seabeds on the high seas.&nbsp;

The groups, citing the study, have expressed deep concern over the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/study-shows-deep-sea-mining-could-disrupt-a-whales-ability-to-communicate-562127">potential impacts</a> of deep-sea mining on sustainable fisheries considering the “significant overlap” between the location of future fishing grounds and areas licensed for mineral exploration.&nbsp;

The groups have called for a halt ahead of the next <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-row-erupts-amid-talks-to-regulate-seabed-mining-heres-what-happened-574488">International Seabed Authority (ISA)</a> meeting&nbsp;later this month given the environmental and economic risks. “In the vast expanse of the high seas, critical for tuna species, we find ourselves sailing into uncharted territory with the unknown risks posed by deep-sea mining,” said the executive director at Global Tuna Alliance, Daniel Suddaby.&nbsp;

Similarly, the co-author of the study, Professor Douglas McCauley said, “These fishing grounds may be distant, but the food they produce is consumed by millions. We would be horrified at dumping mining waste across our food-producing regions on land.”&nbsp;

He added that decisions which could “significantly harm” ocean ecosystems, essential not only for the environment but also for planetary health and global food security, should not be rushed.&nbsp;

The pale blue dot in the vast darkness of universe, also referred to as Earth or our home planet has been around for billions of years. Alone in its orbital stillness, the planet has undergone a multitude of changes. Its layers carry evidence of ice age, dinosaurs roaming around, asteroid hits, mass extinctions, continental ruptures and whatnot. Humans, who have been around a tiny fraction of that time on the cosmic scale, have also made a significant impact on the planet. Now, a special team of scientists has pointed out the timeframe when the new geologic epoch began, influenced by us - the Homo sapiens. What is Anthropocene? Members of the Anthropocene Working Group on Tuesday designated a small body of water near Toronto, Canada as ground zero for the Anthropocene. The word derived from Greek terms for "human" and "new" refers to the current geological age of the planet when human activity has been the dominant influence. The data states that Earth moved into its new age about 73 years ago (1950). The layered sediments deposited at the bottom of Crawford Lake — laced with microplastics, fly-ash spread by burning oil and coal, and the detritus of nuclear bomb explosions, is being regarded as the global example of the beginning of the Anthropocene. “The data show a clear shift from the mid-20th century, taking Earth’s system beyond the normal bounds of the Holocene," said working group member Andy Cundy, a professor at the University of Southampton, referring to the epoch that began 11,700 years ago after the end of ice age. “The sediment found at the bottom of the Crawford Lake provides an exquisite record of recent environmental change over the last millennia,” said Simon Turner, chairman of the working group. Also read | Welcome to the Anthropocene, Earth's new chapter How did scientists find out the baseline? Scientists are linking the new epoch to what is known as the Great Acceleration. It is the period after World War II when human activity went into overdrive. The population surged, industries expanded, more fossil fuels started to burn, nitrogen-based fertilisers became the norm and weapons of mass destruction i.e. nuclear bombs were tested. The scientists arrived at the conclusion that plutonium cast off by hydrogen bomb tests provided that global fingerprint. “The clearest marker for a single year – which gives an abrupt and effectively instantaneous snapshot – is plutonium, because there’s so little of it naturally present," said Cundy, referring to the year 1952 when the US first detonated a huge hydrogen bomb in the Marshall Islands which could become the new epoch's boundary year. WATCH | WION Climate Tracker: Biodiversity suffers from global warming × Crawford Lake's competition Crawford Lake was up against 11 other environmental spaces, spanning five continents, including Antarctica, to be regarded as the ground zero of human footprint. The scientists involved in the study said they were surprised that each of the 12 sites consistently showed the global marks of human activity. Combing them, it paints a clear picture that humans have caused a rapid change to the environment in a very short period of time. If the scientists are able to have their way, they may proclaim that the planet has entered the Crawfordian age (named after the lake of course, following the protocol). However, the recommendations must be approved by a supermajority vote of two separate committees before final validation by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). Point of no return? Succinctly put, the Crawfordian age represents the point of no return in geological terms. The planet endured a long period of climate stability where human civilisation was able to grow but the future might not hold similar conditions for the generations to come. Such has been the devastating impact of humans on Earth that last month, a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal by the American Geophysical Union stated that the planet had tilted as much as 80 centimetres (31.5 inches) between 1993 and 2010. The reason was attributed to humans pumping out indiscriminate amounts of groundwater and moving it elsewhere. Also read | ‘Surprised and concerned’: Scientists find groundwater extracted by humans has shifted tilt of Earth’s axis Climate change has become a routine phenomenon during this epoch. Currently, USA's southwestern states are sweltering under extreme heat with temperatures touching three figures. Meanwhile, in India, China, Japan and other Asian countries, floods have devastated human lives. The power of humans is being classed in the same category as the meteorite that crashed into Earth 66 million years ago and wiped out dinosaurs, starting the Cenozoic Era. For the first time in Earth's history, a single species has not only radically changed the planet's morphology, chemistry and biology, but is aware of having done so. And yet, little to nothing is being done to reverse the damage. The scientists may or may not be able to convince their peers towards the Anthropocene, mostly on technical grounds but one thing is clear, the Earth has changed, and not for good reasons. Protests intensify in Japan and South Korea over Fukushima water release

The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea.

As envoys gathered in Bonn in early June to prepare for this year's annual climate talks in November, average global surface air temperatures were more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for several days, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said.

Though mean temperatures had temporarily breached the 1.5C threshold before, this was the first time they had done so in the northern hemisphere summer that starts on June 1. Sea temperatures also broke April and May records.

"We've run out of time because change takes time," said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climatologist at Australia's University of New South Wales.

As climate envoys from the two biggest greenhouse gas emitters prepare to meet next month, temperatures broke June records in the Chinese capital Beijing, and extreme heatwaves have hit the United States.

Parts of North America were some 10C above the seasonal average this month, and smoke from forest fires blanketed Canada and the U.S. East Coast in hazardous haze, with carbon emissions estimated at a record 160 million metric tons.

In India, one of the most climate vulnerable regions, deaths were reported to have spiked as a result of sustained high temperatures, and extreme heat has been recorded in Spain, Iran and Vietnam, raising fears that last year's deadly summer could become routine.

Countries agreed in Paris in 2015 to try to keep long-term average temperature rises within 1.5C, but there is now a 66% likelihood the annual mean will cross the 1.5C threshold for at least one whole year between now and 2027, the World Meteorological Organization predicted in May.

<h2>'Quadruple whammy'</h2>

High land temperatures have been matched by those on the sea, with warming intensified by an El Nino event and other factors.

Global average sea surface temperatures hit 21C in late March and have remained at record levels for the time of year throughout April and May. Australia's weather agency warned that Pacific and Indian Ocean sea temperatures could be 3C warmer than normal by October.

Global warming is the major factor, said Piers Forster, professor of climate physics at the University of Leeds, but El Nino, the decline in Saharan dust blowing over the ocean and the use of low-sulphur shipping fuels were also to blame.

"So in all, oceans are being hit by a quadruple whammy," he said. "It's a sign of things to come."

Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on Texan beaches and heat-induced algal blooms have also been blamed for killing sea lions and dolphins in California.

Warmer seas could also mean less wind and rain, creating a vicious circle that leads to even more heat, said Annalisa Bracco, a climatologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Though this year's high sea temperatures are caused by a "perfect combination" of circumstances, the ecological impact could endure, she said.

"The ocean is going to have a very slow response as it accumulates (heat) slowly but also keeps it for very long."

<h2>The road to Dubai</h2>

Climate experts say the extent and frequency of extreme weather are increasing, and this year has also seen punishing droughts across the world, as well as a rare and deadly cyclone in Africa.

The Worldwide Fund for Nature, however, warned of a "worrying lack of momentum" during climate talks in Bonn this month, with little progress made on key issues like fossil fuels and finance ahead of November's COP28 climate talks in Dubai.

"It was very detached from what was going on outside of the building in Bonn - I was very disappointed by that," said Li Shuo, Greenpeace's senior climate adviser in Beijing.

"We are really getting to the moment of truth ... I am hoping that the sheer reality will help us change people's moves and change the politics."

The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea.

'Quadruple whammy' High land temperatures have been matched by those on the sea, with warming intensified by an El Nino event and other factors. "It's a sign of things to come." Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on Texan beaches and heat-induced algal blooms have also been blamed for killing sea lions and dolphins in California. "The ocean is going to have a very slow response as it accumulates (heat) slowly but also keeps it for very long." The road to Dubai Climate experts say the extent and frequency of extreme weather are increasing, and this year has also seen punishing droughts across the world, as well as a rare and deadly cyclone in Africa. I am hoping that the sheer reality will help us change people's moves and change the politics." Talks between the United States and China could resume next week with U.S. climate envoy John Kerry set to visit Beijing, though few expect it to add momentum to climate negotiations. "This is more a trust-building exercise," Li said. "I don't think either side will be able to push the other side to say much more than they are willing to do - the politics won't allow that." World hits record land, sea temperatures as climate change fuels 2023 extremes

The United Kingdom witnessed its hottest June since recordkeeping&nbsp;began 139 years ago, said the country’s Met Office, on Monday (July 3). The recent record also surpassed the last hottest June by nearly a full degree.&nbsp;

The British weather agency also noted that the UK, as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, surpassed their respective warmest June in a series which dates back to 1884 some by a “significant margin".

<h2>Warmest June on record in the UK</h2>

According to the data by the Met Office, in June, the average monthly temperature of 15.8 degree&nbsp;Celsius exceeded the previously recorded highest average in 1940 and 1976 by 0.9 degree&nbsp;Celsius.&nbsp;

The records were broken in 72 of 97 areas in the UK from where temperature data is collected, reported the Met Office. Additionally, the mid-month heat, last month, was 15.8 degree Celsius which is also 2.5 degree&nbsp;Celsius higher than average.&nbsp;

“It’s officially the hottest June on record for the UK, for mean temperature as well as average maximum and minimum temperature,” said Met Office’s Mark McCarthy, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “June started with a good deal of high pressure and temperatures initially around average for many, but once that subsided, warm, humid air began to influence temperatures, with 32.2 degree&nbsp;Celsius the highest temperatures reached.”&nbsp;

<h2>Less rain and more sunshine across the UK</h2>

This also comes as rain was in short supply across the UK in the month of June with just 68 per cent of the monthly average rainfall. According to the Met Office data, it was also the fourth sunniest June on record and drier than usual in the country.&nbsp;

The UK witnessed its sunniest June since 1957. The report noted that Wales was “particularly dry”, receiving 51 per cent of its average monthly rainfall. Meanwhile, Scotland witnessed its third sunniest June on record with 231.4 hours of sunshine and England had its fourth sunniest with 259.8 hours.&nbsp;

This has been attributed to periods of high pressure which has not only helped temperatures to rise but also created long periods of sunshine in many parts of the country.

<h2>Why is this happening?</h2>

A study conducted by Met Office scientists has attributed this rise in temperatures to both natural causes as well as human-induced climate change. “We found that the chance of observing a June beating the previous joint 1940/1976 record of 14.9 degree Celsius has at least doubled since the 1940s,” said Paul Davies, Met Office climate extremes principal fellow and chief meteorologist.&nbsp;

He added, “Alongside natural variability, the background warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to human-induced climate change has driven up the possibility of reaching record high temperatures.”&nbsp;

Furthermore, he also explained how using the UKCP18 (UK Climate Projections) climate projections scientists noted a “difference in the frequency of these sorts of extremes depending on the emissions scenario we follow in the future.” Therefore, by the 2050s, the chances of crossing 14.9 degree&nbsp;Celsius increase by as much as 50 per cent.&nbsp;

“Beyond the 2050s the likelihood is strongly governed by our emissions of greenhouse gasses, with the chance increasing further in a high emissions scenario but levelling off under mitigation,” said Davies.

<h2>'Unprecedented': Thousands of fishes killed due to heat</h2>

Speaking to BBC, Mark Owen, the Angling Trust’s head of fisheries, said how the high temperatures have already killed thousands of fish across the UK in the month of June.&nbsp;

“The reports of the number of fish death incidents in rivers for this time of year have been unprecedented. I would normally expect rivers to be affected later in the summer when it’s hotter and drier,” Owen told the British media outlet.&nbsp;

Owen also spoke about the chain reaction this type of change has on the ecosystem. “If July is like June, if August is like June, then we will get far more fish kills than we’ve ever seen. There is a knock-on effect,” as quoted by PA media. He added, “The fish are the visible bit because that’s what people see floating on the surface but it is also (about) what is happening to the ecosystem.”

UK witnesses hottest June since recordkeeping began nearly 140 years ago: Met Office

Two environmental groups, the Nordic branch of Greenpeace and Natur og Ungdom (Nature and Youth or Young Friends of the Earth Norway), on Thursday (June 29) said that they are suing the Norwegian state for violating the country’s constitution and international human rights commitments. This comes as Norway recently approved three offshore oilfields and new oil and gas projects worth nearly $19 billion.

<h2>What have the environmental groups sought?</h2>

The two environmental groups have sought a court injunction against the government, calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing development of three Norwegian offshore oilfields – Equinor’s Breidablikk and Aker BP’s Yggdrasil and Tyrving fields.&nbsp;

The groups have based their arguments on the Norwegian constitution and its international human rights commitments. In a joint statement, the environmental groups said, “Their recent approvals violate the Norwegian constitution and Norway’s international human rights commitments, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.”

This also comes after the groups previously lost a similar lawsuit, back in 2020, which objected to the planned development of new oil fields approved by the government. Both Greenpeace and Nature and Youth have long sought the court’s intervention against Norway’s oil and gas production.&nbsp;

The recent lawsuit also comes a day after the country’s petroleum and energy ministry green-lit another 19 oil and gas fields worth more than 200 billion Norwegian crowns ($18.5 billion).&nbsp;

The two groups have argued that the government has failed to assess the global impact of the three oil fields – Yggdrasil, Tyrving and Breidablikk – and alleged that they were “either non-existent or highly inadequate, rendering the approvals invalid.”&nbsp;

They added, “The organisations demand that the development cease until the court has assessed the legal basis.”

In a statement, the head of Greenpeace Norway, Frode Pleym, said that the “Norwegian government is hellbent on opening new oil fields that will produce fossil fuels decades into the future.” He added, “It is blatantly disregarding the climate, the science, and even our own Supreme Court in its effort to please the oil industry.”

Notably, Norway is western Europe’s largest oil-producing nation as well as the biggest supplier of natural gas to the continent. The government has also previously argued that its petroleum resources are vital to Europe’s energy security.

<h2>How has the government responded?</h2>

In a statement to Reuters, State Secretary and Energy Minister, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said that while they are confident that the approval of the recent projects has not violated the law, “Still, it’s the right of environmental organisations to try this before the court.”&nbsp;

In the context of violations of rights and the law, Eriksen also said, “The government is respecting its commitments in the Paris (climate) treaty,” as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;

He added, “At the same time, we need to contribute to energy security during the transition...The authorisations we have granted ensure that Europe will continue to have access to energy in the future as well.”&nbsp;

Environmental groups sue Norwegian state, ask court to halt billion-dollar oil projects

UK environment minister Lord Zac Goldsmith has tendered his resignation citing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's lack of interest in addressing climate change, media reports said. Lord Goldsmith expressed his dismay for "uninterested" Sunak and the government's indifference towards environmental issues, which led him to find it "untenable" to continue serving as the environment minister.&nbsp;

His resignation letter strongly criticised the government's abandonment of environmental commitments and withdrawal of global leadership. Lord Goldsmith highlighted the abandonment of the flagship animal welfare bill and the failure to fulfil a pledge to allocate £11.6 billion ($14.7bn) of UK aid to climate and environmental initiatives.

This comes after Lord Goldsmith was accused of undermining a parliamentary investigation into former UK prime minister Boris Johnson's actions in the Partygate scandal. The committee identified Lord Goldsmith as one of ten Conservative Party members involved in an effort to interfere with the probe.

"The problem is not that the government is hostile to the environment, it is that you, our prime minister, are simply uninterested," he wrote in the resignation letter, adding, "That signal, or lack of it, has trickled down through Whitehall and caused a kind of paralysis."

The resignation follows a warning from the Climate Change Committee, a government climate watchdog, which stated that the UK had lost its leadership position on climate issues.&nbsp;

<h2>Political responses</h2>

Both the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties had called for Lord Goldsmith's resignation following the publication of the Privileges Committee report.&nbsp;

A verbal spat&nbsp;unfolded between Lord Zac Goldsmith and Rishi Sunak, following Sunak's claim that Lord Goldsmith refused to apologise for criticising a Commons investigation into Prime Minister Boris Johnson.&nbsp;

"You were asked to apologise for your comments about the Privileges Committee as we felt they were incompatible with your position as a Minister of the Crown. You have decided to take a different course," Sunak said adding, Lord Goldsmith had been "a vocal advocate of some of the most important issues that the UK and the world face today".

Sunak also assured that "UK continues to play an important role globally in tackling climate change and preserving the environment."

<h2>Lord Goldsmith's response</h2>

Lord Zac Goldsmith has responded strongly to Rishi Sunak's allegations that the former minister&nbsp;declined to apologise and asserted that the prime minister's claim was "wrong".

"I am happy to apologise for publicly sharing my views on the Privilege Committee," said Lord Goldsmith adding, "I firmly believe our parliamentary democracy can only be strengthened by robust scrutiny, and parliamentarians should of course be free to be critical of its reports and proceedings.

"But as a minister I shouldn't have commented publicly. No 10 asked me to acknowledge that, and made clear that there was no question of my being 'sacked' if I did so. I was - and am - happy to do so. My decision to step down has been a long time coming," he said.&nbsp;

UK environment minister Zac Goldsmith resigns, accuses Rishi Sunak of neglecting climate change

A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, on Wednesday (June 28) found that an increase in temperatures leads to a substantial rise in domestic violence against women.&nbsp;

The South Asia-based study looks at three countries,&nbsp;India, Pakistan, and Nepal&nbsp;between 2010 and 2018, where thousands of girls and women spoke about their experience of emotional, physical and sexual violence.&nbsp;

It also noted that without any steps taken to limit emissions which contribute to global warming and climate change, in the 2090s, India might experience the highest rate of violence against women&nbsp;among the three countries studied.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the study find?</h2>

According to the study, one degree Celsius rise in average annual temperature was linked to an increase of more than 6.3 per cent in incidents of physical and sexual domestic violence across the three countries.&nbsp;

The researchers tracked 194,871 girls and women aged between 15 and 49 to study the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its types which include physical, sexual, and emotional violence across India, Pakistan and Nepal.&nbsp;

“A significant association was found between high ambient temperature and the prevalence of IPV against women,” said the study, adding that with every one degree Celsius increase in the annual mean temperature, they noted a total of 4.49 per cent IPV prevalence.&nbsp;

The research also projected that IPV prevalence would increase by as much as 21 per cent by the end of this century under the “unlimited emissions scenarios.” However, if steps are taken to curb emissions contributing to climate change and global warming, the IPV prevalence would “moderately increase,” said the researchers. &nbsp;

In its projected increase in violence, the study also found that physical (28.3 per cent) and sexual violence (26.1 per cent) were significantly higher than emotional (8.9 per cent).&nbsp;

Speaking about the findings of the research, Michelle Bell, a professor of environmental health at Yale University and a co-author of the study, said there were “many potential pathways, both physiological and sociological, through which higher temperature could affect risk of violence”.&nbsp;

Extreme heat sets off a chain reaction of socio-economic effects like crop failures, and effects on income, and forces people to stay at home without any means to earn a daily wage, which puts a lot of pressure on households and gives rise to violence against women.&nbsp;

The study also found that IPV is significantly more prevalent in lower-income and rural households when compared to heat-related increases in violence in higher-income groups. The research was conducted across all income groups.

According to the study, India is projected to witness the highest IPV prevalence in the 2090s among the three countries with 23.5 per cent when compared to Nepal (14.8 per cent) and Pakistan (5.9 per cent). This comes as India witnessed several&nbsp;heat-related deaths, earlier this year, with temperatures up to 45&nbsp;degree&nbsp;Celsius in certain parts of the country.&nbsp;

A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, on Wednesday (June 28) found that an increase in temperatures leads to a substantial rise in domestic violence against women. The South Asia-based study looks at three countries, India, Pakistan, and Nepal between 2010 and 2018, where thousands of girls and women spoke about their experience of emotional, physical and sexual violence. It also noted that without any steps taken to limit emissions which contribute to global warming and climate change, in the 2090s, India might experience the highest rate of violence against women among the three countries studied. What did the study find? According to the study, one degree Celsius rise in average annual temperature was linked to an increase of more than 6.3 per cent in incidents of physical and sexual domestic violence across the three countries. India might witness rise in domestic violence against women due to climate change: Study

It's cheap, recycled, and has centuries of tradition: "shimogoe" or "fertiliser from a person's bottom" is finding new favour in Japan as Ukraine&nbsp;war has led to hike&nbsp;in the price of chemical alternatives.

As in several parts of the world, the use of "night soil" to fertilise crops was once common in Japan.

However, the advent of sewage systems and treatment facilities, as well as chemical fertilisers, saw it fall out of fashion.

About a decade ago, Japanese treatment facilities wondered if they could revive interest to avoid sewage sludge disposal — a costly and potentially environmentally damaging process.

But enthusiasm was limited until Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent the cost of chemical fertilisers soaring.

That has been a bonanza for a facility in northern Japan's Tome, where sales of shimogoe were up 160 per cent year-on-year by March 2023.

For the first time since the city began producing the fertiliser in 2010, it has sold out.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/japanese-join-ukraine-war-609522">Despite government's warning, Japanese men join Ukraine war</a>

The demand is easy to explain, said facility vice president Toshiaki Kato. "Our fertiliser is popular because it is cheap, and it is helping farmers cut soaring costs," he told AFP.

"It is also good for the environment."

Made of a combination of treated sewage sludge from septic tanks and human waste from cesspits, the fertiliser goes for 160 yen ($1.10) per 15 kg.

That's about a tenth of the price of products made from imported raw materials.

In southwestern Japan's Saga too, officials report sales are up two to three times.

And dozens of tour groups from municipalities elsewhere in the country have visited, eager to replicate their programme.

<h2>Historic origins</h2>

Shimogoe was a key fertiliser in Japan's pre-modern Edo era, said Arata Kobayashi, a fertiliser specialist who has written journal articles on the subject.

In the early 18th century, the one million residents of Tokyo — then called Edo — "produced" an estimated 500,000 tonnes of fertiliser a year.

It was big business, involving gatherers, transporters and farmers, "and all of them benefited from the recycling system," Kobayashi said.

They "didn't create a recycling system on purpose... it was the result of everyone pursuing profit."

Japan's government has encouraged the revival, citing environmental benefits and concerns about food security since Russia's invasion.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries hopes to double animal manure and human waste use by 2030, with a goal of them accounting for 40 per cent of all fertiliser use in Japan.

In Miura outside Tokyo, vacuum trucks carrying human waste arrive one after another at a treatment facility.

Water is removed and then bacteria ferment the remaining solids in huge tanks.

Methane produced during the process is burned to supply the facility's hot water and electricity, and the final product is a soil-like powder that can be spread on fields.

"We produce 500 tonnes of fertiliser annually," said Kenichi Ryose, facility manager at Miura Biomass Centre.

"This fertiliser is particularly good for leaf vegetables, like cabbage," he added.

Ryose said "harmful materials like heavy metals are removed from processed sewage sludge before arriving," at the plant.&nbsp;

In the United States, there have been recent concerns about the levels of so-called forever chemicals (PFAS) in fertiliser made from sewage.

An environment ministry official said similar concerns had not been reported in Japan, but noted there are no current guidelines for PFAS levels in soil.

"We're in the process of developing a scientifically reliable way to measure PFAS and studying how to regulate it," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

<h2>'Dirty mud'</h2>

The sun is shining as the trucks arrive, and despite the facility's odour-absorbing machines, a distinct aroma fills the air.

The smell has proved something of a problem, admitted Nobuyoshi Fujiwara, 41, who runs a lettuce farm in Yokosuka, north of Miura.

He started using Shimogoe last year, "because I wanted to cut costs and for the social good" of recycling waste.

But "we can't use it in fields near houses, because there are complaints about the smell".

"Also, you have to spread four or five times the volume that you use with regular chemical fertilisers," he explained.

That's the case for any type of manure but can be a turnoff for some farmers because it is more work.

He concedes that the fertiliser faces something of a branding issue.

"The Chinese characters that are used for sludge — 'dirty mud' — are not great," he said.

"Even though we produce safe food, I imagine that for those who don't know much about it, the impressions people have of fertiliser made from human faeces might not be good."

He doesn't want to hide his use of the fertiliser though. In fact, he would like to see it publicised.&nbsp;"An official certification system would be helpful to promote our produce," he said.

Preliminary global average temperatures taken at the beginning of June were the warmest on record for the period, said the European Union’s climate monitoring unit, on Thursday (June 15). This comes as last week, scientists at the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the arrival of an expected El Nino climate phenomenon has raised fears of extreme weather and temperature records.

<h2>‘Remarkable global warmth’ in early June: EU monitor</h2>

A report by Copernicus, the EU’s observation agency, said that they have noted a “remarkable global warmth” in the first week of June this year. The report cited the data provided by ERA5 which found that the first few days of the month even breached a 1.5 degree Celsius increase when compared with pre-industrial times.&nbsp;

The report suggests that this might be the first time this breach of high temperature had occurred in the industrial era. “Global-mean surface air temperatures for the first days of June 2023 were the highest in the ERA5 data record for early June by a substantial margin,” said the report, with the data collection going back as far as 1950.&nbsp;

The temperature recorded in early June is&nbsp;also nearly one degree Celsius above levels previously recorded for the same month back in 1979. “The world has just experienced its warmest early June on record, following a month of May that was less than 0.1°C cooler than the warmest May on record,” said Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Deputy Director Samantha Burgess.&nbsp;

<h2>US announces the arrival of El Nino</h2>

Last week, NOAA said that the El Nino conditions are now present and will “gradually strengthen” into early 2024. The weather pattern in question is marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean near the equator that last occurred in 2018-19.&nbsp;

“The global surface temperature anomaly is at or near record levels right now, and 2023 will almost certainly be the warmest year on record,” said Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, as quoted by The Guardian. He added, “That is likely to be true for just about every El Niño year in the future as well, as long we continue to warm the planet with fossil fuel burning and carbon pollution.”

However, Ellen Bartow-Gillies, a climate scientist at NOAA said that the agency is yet to process its temperature data for June but it is not looking good as higher temperatures may continue.&nbsp;

“We are off to a pretty warm start to the year, it’s not unprecedented, but we could be getting even warmer due to El Niño,” said Bartow-Gillies, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

Global temperatures rise above average in early June amid fears of 2023 being hottest year on record

A first-of-a-kind trial is underway in Montana, the United States where 16 young people have filed a lawsuit which has sought to hold the officials in the state accountable over inaction on climate change. The young plaintiffs hope that this lawsuit would bring changes to the fossil fuel-friendly state.

<h2>Plaintiffs feel a sense of 'betrayal'</h2>

In his opening statement, Roger Sullivan, an attorney for the young plaintiffs, from non-profit Our Children’s Trust, reportedly listed the costs and consequences of Montana’s fossil fuel-friendly policies which he said are also in violation of the state constitutional provision that guarantees a right to a “clean and healthful environment.”

The trial is set to go on for two weeks and is being presided over by District Judge Kathy Seeley who the 16 young plaintiffs and their attorneys will try to convince that the state policies which supposedly favour fossil fuels not only endanger their health and livelihoods but also threatens the future generations.

It is also worth noting that the lawsuit centres around the state’s constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment.” In line with this, Sullivan also said that Montana’s ongoing permitting of polluting fuels like coal and gas is contributing to a global crisis including, “heat, drought, wildfires, air pollution, violent storms, loss of wildlife, watching glaciers melt.”&nbsp;

The lawyer for the plaintiffs also went on to argue that because of these effects, the young people he represents are disproportionately suffering psychologically and healthily. Speaking on behalf of the plaintiffs, Sullivan said they felt a sense of “betrayal,” with some expressing reluctance to have their own children because they fear the world they would grow up in.

He also claimed that the state had pursued a ruinous energy policy which led to the release of 166 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually, which is equivalent to the emissions of countries like Argentina, the Netherlands, or Pakistan.

<h2>Montana youth testify in court</h2>

One of the plaintiffs, a 19-year-old Montana resident, Grace Gibson-Snyder told the court that the smoke from wildfires which have worsened due to climate change and became a “defining experience” of her playing soccer in high school.&nbsp;

She spoke about how her hometown Missoula was regularly shrouded in smoke which forced cancellations of soccer practices and kept her teammates with asthma away from the field. “It’s not pleasant,” said the 19-year-old, as quoted by The Associated Press. She added, “It’s so uncomfortable as you’re breathing deeper and deeper.”

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old lead plaintiff Rikki Held also spoke about how climate change has affected the conditions on her family’s ranch in eastern Montana. Droughts have left “skinny cows and dead cattle” while wildfires make ash fall from the sky, said Held, speaking about the wildfires in 2021.&nbsp;

She said that wildfires had burned some 70 miles (113 kilometres) of power lines in her town which led to a month-long power cut and choked the air “all summer”. The incident also triggered mass evacuations and impacted the family’s motel business.&nbsp;

However, she remains optimistic. “We have the technology and knowledge, we just need empathy and willingness to do the right thing,” said Held. Notably, the trial is expected to see testimonies from all but the four youngest plaintiffs.&nbsp;

<h2>'Minuscule': US state of&nbsp;Montana about its carbon emissions</h2>

Montana Assistant Attorney General Michael Russell said that the state produces “minuscule” emissions and that the harms alleged by the plaintiffs can’t be traced to specific actions by state officials.

“Climate change is a global issue that effectively relegates Montana’s role to that of a spectator,” said Russell. He also said the trial “will hear lots of emotion, lots of assumptions, accusations... and notably fear about what the future may hold, including sweeping and dramatic assertions of doom that awaits us all,” but the reality is “far more boring” than what the youth have claimed.&nbsp;

According to Russell, Montana’s greenhouse gas emissions are decreasing and the plaintiffs are not challenging policies that would, if invalidated, meaningfully change the state’s impact on the climate.&nbsp;

The constitutional provision that the case is centred around is a part of the Montana Environmental Policy Act, which Russell has said is a “procedural” law which requires environmental reviews of any big projects in the state but does not mandate specific outcomes.

<h2>What do we know about the lawsuit?</h2>

The landmark trial that began on Monday is being closely watched since it could potentially set a legal precedent in climate change-related lawsuits. This comes as while there are several constitutional climate cases filed on behalf of youth plaintiffs across the US it is the first case to head to trial.

The case, Held v. Montana, was first filed in 2020 by plaintiffs who were aged between two and 18, at the time, and it finally went to trial three years later. The lawsuit has sought to declare that the state’s policies violate their rights and hope to set a legal precedent, as per their lawyers, which would encourage lawmakers to take action to fight climate change.&nbsp;

The lawsuit claims the government’s “systemic authorization, permitting, encouragement and facilitation” of fossil fuel use is exacerbating the climate crisis. Meanwhile, the US state has repeatedly sought to delay or dismiss the case calling it “meritless” and a publicity stunt aimed at “shutting down responsible energy development in our state.”

The state had also argued that the issue would best be addressed through the political process and not the courts. Notably, plaintiffs had originally sought an injunction which would force the state to develop a remedial plan or policies to reduce emissions, however, their bid was rejected by Judge Seely in 2021.&nbsp;

Judge Seeley said that she could rule that the US state’s climate change exception in its environmental law is at odds with its constitution but cannot tell the legislature how to remedy the violation. Therefore, the plaintiffs are now seeking financial compensation, but rather a declaration that their rights are being violated.

A first-of-a-kind trial is underway in Montana, the United States where 16 young people have filed a lawsuit which has sought to hold the officials in the state accountable over inaction on climate change. The young plaintiffs hope that this lawsuit would bring changes to the fossil fuel-friendly state. Plaintiffs feel a sense of 'betrayal' In his opening statement, Roger Sullivan, an attorney for the young plaintiffs, from non-profit Our Children’s Trust, reportedly listed the costs and consequences of Montana’s fossil fuel-friendly policies which he said are also in violation of the state constitutional provision that guarantees a right to a “clean and healthful environment.” The trial is set to go on for two weeks and is being presided over by District Judge Kathy Seeley who the 16 young plaintiffs and their attorneys will try to convince that the state policies which supposedly favour fossil fuels not only endanger their health and livelihoods but also threatens the future generations. ALSO WATCH | Climate change lawsuit: Montana youth file climate case It is also worth noting that the lawsuit centres around the state’s constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment.” In line with this, Sullivan also said that Montana’s ongoing permitting of polluting fuels like coal and gas is contributing to a global crisis including, “heat, drought, wildfires, air pollution, violent storms, loss of wildlife, watching glaciers melt.” The lawyer for the plaintiffs also went on to argue that because of these effects, the young people he represents are disproportionately suffering psychologically and healthily. Montana youth testify in court One of the plaintiffs, a 19-year-old Montana resident, Grace Gibson-Snyder told the court that the smoke from wildfires which have worsened due to climate change and became a “defining experience” of her playing soccer in high school. She spoke about how her hometown Missoula was regularly shrouded in smoke which forced cancellations of soccer practices and kept her teammates with asthma away from the field. “It’s not pleasant,” said the 19-year-old, as quoted by The Associated Press. She added, “It’s so uncomfortable as you’re breathing deeper and deeper.” ALSO READ | Explained | World Environment Day: 5 international agreements that would affect the planet in years to come Meanwhile, the 22-year-old lead plaintiff Rikki Held also spoke about how climate change has affected the conditions on her family’s ranch in eastern Montana. Droughts have left “skinny cows and dead cattle” while wildfires make ash fall from the sky, said Held, speaking about the wildfires in 2021. She said that wildfires had burned some 70 miles (113 kilometres) of power lines in her town which led to a month-long power cut and choked the air “all summer”. The incident also triggered mass evacuations and impacted the family’s motel business. However, she remains optimistic. “We have the technology and knowledge, we just need empathy and willingness to do the right thing,” said Held. Explained | Montana youth take US state to court in landmark trial over climate change

In an era where environmental consciousness is on the rise, businesses are increasingly seeking ways to showcase their sustainability efforts. However, a concept known as "green hushing" has emerged, casting doubt on the transparency of these eco-friendly claims.&nbsp;

Green hushing refers to the intentional silence or omission of important environmental information by companies. This deceptive practice sets it apart from greenwashing, which involves exaggerating or misleading consumers about environmental initiatives. In this article, we will explore the insidious nature of green hushing, its implications, and how it differs from greenwashing.

Understanding Green Hushing

Green hushing is a strategy employed by companies to withhold or downplay negative environmental aspects associated with their products or practices. While greenwashing aims to create a positive image by exaggerating eco-friendliness, green hushing seeks to maintain a neutral stance by avoiding any mention of the environmental impact entirely. This silence prevents consumers from making informed choices and inhibits their ability to hold companies accountable for their actions.

A 2022 survey compiled by South Pole revealed that one in four companies surveyed have set science-based emission reduction targets, but they do not plan to publicise them. If a side effect of setting a goal is that a bunch of people are yelling at companies from the outside for not getting there fast enough, that creates an incentive to be a little quieter. Increased scrutiny by the media, NGOs, the public, and consumer and market authorities may have made companies more wary than ever about communicating their targets.

France is one of the few countries that has explicit regulation in place on corporate climate claims. In contrast, Singapore-based companies were the most open to publicising their reduction targets. Among big, publicly traded companies in the US and Europe, well-established sustainability norms would dull the impact of. green hushing. But among smaller businesses in these places, and for bigger firms in other regions, those norms are less established; in that sense green hushing could be a problem, if it slows the expansion of the norms into that new terrain.

Green hushing often manifests in various ways. For instance, a company might market a product as "green" without disclosing the materials used or the manufacturing processes involved. Another example could be a business withholding information about its waste management practices or pollution levels. By selectively sharing information, companies create an illusion of sustainability without addressing their true environmental impact.

Implications of Green Hushing

Green hushing has several detrimental effects on both consumers and the environment. Firstly, it erodes trust and transparency between businesses and their customers. Consumers who genuinely care about the environment rely on accurate information to make responsible purchasing decisions. When companies engage in green hushing, they undermine this trust, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish genuine eco-friendly products from those making false claims.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-world-environment-day-5-international-deals-that-would-affect-environment-in-the-years-to-come-600963">ALSO READ|&nbsp;5 international agreements that would affect the planet in years to come</a>

Moreover, green hushing perpetuates the status quo of unsustainable practices. By silencing information about harmful production methods or their ecological footprint, companies avoid the scrutiny and pressure to improve their environmental performance. This obstructs progress toward a more sustainable future and inhibits the development of innovative solutions to address environmental challenges.

Additionally, green hushing can hinder regulatory efforts to enforce environmental standards. When companies obscure or fail to disclose critical environmental information, it becomes challenging for regulatory bodies to assess compliance and hold businesses accountable. This lack of transparency undermines regulatory efforts, ultimately weakening the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.

Distinguishing Green Hushing from Greenwashing

Although green hushing and greenwashing share similarities, they differ in their approach and intent. Greenwashing involves making exaggerated or misleading claims about a product's environmental benefits. It is a deliberate marketing strategy designed to attract environmentally conscious consumers. On the other hand, green hushing is characterised by the omission or concealment of crucial environmental information, preventing consumers from fully understanding the true impact of a product or company.

While greenwashing misleads consumers by creating a false perception of environmental responsibility, green hushing keeps consumers in the dark altogether. Greenwashing attempts to capitalise on the demand for sustainability, while green hushing aims to maintain a veneer of neutrality and avoid scrutiny.

A fear of being called out

It remains to be seen if green hushing will have the same sort of staying power as its antithesis greenwashing. That term was coined nearly 40 years ago to describe the way companies exaggerate about their environmental credentials and has become so commonplace it was recently added to the dictionary. One assessment of greenwashing in the European Union last year found that nearly half of the “green online claims” being made by companies were exaggerated, deceptive, or false.&nbsp;

Glaring data points like this have triggered legal crackdowns; Australia’s competition watchdog recently made greenwashing an enforcement priority , and new EU Directive could prohibit environmental performance claims that can’t be backed up. Heightened sensitivity to such scrutiny might speak to the idea of not speaking at all.

There are other practical reasons for green hushing. One is a perception that green products will require undesirable trade-offs: If I tell you I’m buying a green cleaning product for my house, you might not expect it to get mildew off the shower tiles.There’s also a perception issue related to timing. If I’m the first company to go net-zero then I get more press for it, if I’m the 347th company to go net-zero, nobody cares and if I’m the 1,500th company then I’m actually seen as a laggard.

Accountability has to be fostered

Green hushing represents a troubling trend in the corporate world, as it stifles transparency and hampers progress toward sustainability. By intentionally withholding environmental information, companies impede consumer choice and hinder efforts. to address pressing ecological challenges. It is crucial for businesses to embrace genuine transparency, providing accurate and comprehensive information about their environmental practices.

As consumers, we have the responsibility to remain vigilant and demand transparency from the companies we support. By fostering a culture of accountability and encouraging open dialogue, we can help dismantle the deceptive practices of green hushing and foster a truly sustainable future.

Green Hushing: Unveiling the deceptive silence beyond greenwashing

In pics | Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg participates in pre-COP28 protest in Germany

In November 2022, following the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Egypt, over 100 leaders from nearly 200 nations signed a contentious final deal. Meanwhile, the future of fossil fuels rests on an Emirati oil chief who the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has chosen to head the upcoming COP28 climate summit in Dubai.&nbsp;

The importance of these international treaties is reiterated time and time again when countries vow to step up their response to the climate crisis or take measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degree&nbsp;Celsius from pre-industrial levels and their carbon emissions.&nbsp;

Every year, since 1973, World Environment Day has been celebrated by millions of people across the world, led by the UN Environment Programme. Since last year, for better or for worse, five prominent international agreements and treaties have been decided upon which&nbsp;are set to affect environment-related decision-making in the years to come.&nbsp;

<h2>COP27 summit: A contentious deal</h2>

Last year, the UN climate conference was hosted in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh and after days of debates and talks, nearly 200 nations finally announced the historic agreement on the “loss and damage” fund from climate change and the final declaration wrapping up the weeks-long conference.&nbsp;

The summit had to be extended by a day in a bid to break the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop27-un-climate-talks-extended-by-one-day-to-end-on-saturday-535390">deadlock </a>over the creation of a fund for developing countries which have been devastated by the fallout from global warming which the richer nations had previously declined to do. The COP27 cover decision or Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan for the first time incorporated specific sections on forests and “nature-based solutions,” which includes steps like restoring the mangroves.&nbsp;

COP27 was more focused on implementation, while COP26, held in Glasgow was about target setting. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop27-major-takeaways-from-the-un-climate-summit-reactions-from-global-leaders-535830">Key takeaways</a> from the two not legally binding papers included steps to limit greenhouse gas emissions; not cross the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold; hold businesses and institutions accountable for emissions and ensure transparency; financial aid for developing countries to lower emissions and climate-resilient development.&nbsp;

The goals fell short of pushing for the urgent “drastic” carbon-cutting needed to tackle global warming. “Our planet is still in the emergency room. We need to drastically reduce emissions now, and this is an issue this COP did not address,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/disgruntled-un-chief-antonio-guterres-calls-out-cop27-for-failing-to-meet-ambitions-535726">criticising</a> the nations.&nbsp;

<h2>COP15 summit: Historic billion dollar deal to save biodiversity</h2>

The UN biodiversity conference&nbsp;COP15 took place in December amid intense pressure where at least 190 countries agreed to raise $200 billion by the end of the decade to protect land and marine areas as well as save biodiversity in the developing world after it was dubbed as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop15-summit-rich-countries-oppose-creation-of-10bn-biodiversity-fund-542946">“last chance”</a> to address the issue.&nbsp;

The draft, 30 by 30, agreed upon in Montreal, Canada had four broad goals and 22 targets which committed to protecting 30 per cent of land and water which are considered pillars of biodiversity by 2030. Prior to this, only 17 per cent of terrestrial and 10 per cent of marine areas were protected.&nbsp;

During the summit, finance was one of the most contentious issues after some&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/countries-sign-historic-deal-at-cop-15-commit-billions-by-2030-to-save-biodiversity-544511">70 delegates</a> from African, South American and Asian countries staged a walkout and did not return for hours. The deal also accounted for the rights of Indigenous peoples and reaffirmed that they will have a voice in decision-making, a move which was praised by many.&nbsp;

<h2>UN High Seas Treaty approved after over a decade</h2>

Over 15 years of discussions and five rounds of protracted UN-led discussions later, more than 100 countries, in March, signed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-un-ocean-treaty-talks-resume-why-the-deal-to-protect-the-worlds-oceans-is-so-important-564112">legally binding pact</a> to protect and manage nearly two-thirds of the world’s oceans that lie beyond countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), known as the high seas. Notably, the high seas make up more than 60 per cent of the world’s oceans and almost half of the planet’s surface but receive little to no attention since there are no borders.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/15-years-of-discussions-later-the-ship-has-reached-the-shore-nations-bag-global-treaty-to-protect-high-seas-568720">long-awaited</a> treaty will work to reverse marine biodiversity losses and ensure sustainable development. The discussions ran as long as they did due to the economic interests which included developing nations wanting larger shares of the so-called "blue economy"&nbsp;and an agreement on the sharing of “marine genetic resources”.&nbsp;

<h2>Deep sea mining might begin with no regulations</h2>

In March, the UN associated, 167-nation body, International Seabed Authority (ISA) convened in Kingston, Jamaica to negotiate on creating a legally binding document which would set the rules for how deep sea mining would be regulated in the high seas. As the discussions began, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-row-erupts-amid-talks-to-regulate-seabed-mining-heres-what-happened-574488">ISA chief</a> was criticised by diplomats who claimed that he has been pushing them to accelerate the process of beginning deep-sea mining.

The ISA&nbsp;recently faced pressure from the tiny Pacific nation, Nauru, which triggered a clause in 2021 that would allow it to demand the adoption of the rules which are still being negotiated within two years.&nbsp;

The decision to allow permit applications by July 9 came by the end of March after the ISA’s governing council formulated a draft decision due to the triggered clause. As per a document seen by Reuters, the council plans to meet virtually before July to debate if the approval of these permits can be delayed.&nbsp;

<h2>UN to deal with world’s plastic problem&nbsp;</h2>

Last month, a UN committee met to negotiate a landmark legally binding global plastics treaty in Paris which would ideally end global plastic pollution. The debate was about whether the countries should limit the production of more plastics or recycle plastic waste, with the plastic-producing and oil and gas companies supporting the latter and environmental groups in favour of the former.&nbsp;

At the end of the recently concluded <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-plastic-recycling-in-focus-as-countries-meet-in-paris-for-treaty-talks-598037">second meeting</a> in France, the decision to come up with a “zero-draft” by the end of November came at the 11th hour ahead of a third round of talks in Nairobi after some reported “nit-picking” and “delaying tactics” by countries, said the French foreign minister

<h2>COP28 summit: The way forward?</h2>

It has been a year of historic decision-making and passing contentious deals involving hundreds of countries across the world. So what’s next? The next COP meeting is already garnering criticism and has come under scrutiny after its host UAE selected Sultan al-Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to lead the upcoming climate summit.

As per AFP, while Al-Jaber favours the rapid development of renewable energy he has also supposedly focused more on the use of controversial technologies to capture carbon dioxide as opposed to reducing emissions by limiting fossil fuels. The COP28 climate summit is set to take place in December.&nbsp;

The importance of these international treaties is reiterated time and time again when countries vow to step up their response to the climate crisis or take measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius from pre-industrial levels and their carbon emissions. Every year, since 1973, World Environment Day has been celebrated by millions of people across the world, led by the UN Environment Programme. Since last year, for better or for worse, five prominent international agreements and treaties have been decided upon which are set to affect environment-related decision-making in the years to come. COP27 summit: A contentious deal Last year, the UN climate conference was hosted in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh and after days of debates and talks, nearly 200 nations finally announced the historic agreement on the “loss and damage” fund from climate change and the final declaration wrapping up the weeks-long conference. The summit had to be extended by a day in a bid to break the deadlock over the creation of a fund for developing countries which have been devastated by the fallout from global warming which the richer nations had previously declined to do. The COP27 cover decision or Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan for the first time incorporated specific sections on forests and “nature-based solutions,” which includes steps like restoring the mangroves. COP27 was more focused on implementation, while COP26, held in Glasgow was about target setting. Key takeaways from the two not legally binding papers included steps to limit greenhouse gas emissions; not cross the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold; hold businesses and institutions accountable for emissions and ensure transparency; financial aid for developing countries to lower emissions and climate-resilient development. The goals fell short of pushing for the urgent “drastic” carbon-cutting needed to tackle global warming. “Our planet is still in the emergency room. We need to drastically reduce emissions now, and this is an issue this COP did not address,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, criticising the nations. COP15 summit: Historic billion dollar deal to save biodiversity The UN biodiversity conference COP15 took place in December amid intense pressure where at least 190 countries agreed to raise $200 billion by the end of the decade to protect land and marine areas as well as save biodiversity in the developing world after it was dubbed as the “last chance” to address the issue. The draft, 30 by 30, agreed upon in Montreal, Canada had four broad goals and 22 targets which committed to protecting 30 per cent of land and water which are considered pillars of biodiversity by 2030. Prior to this, only 17 per cent of terrestrial and 10 per cent of marine areas were protected. During the summit, finance was one of the most contentious issues after some 70 delegates from African, South American and Asian countries staged a walkout and did not return for hours. The deal also accounted for the rights of Indigenous peoples and reaffirmed that they will have a voice in decision-making, a move which was praised by many. UN High Seas Treaty approved after over a decade Over 15 years of discussions and five rounds of protracted UN-led discussions later, more than 100 countries, in March, signed the legally binding pact to protect and manage nearly two-thirds of the world’s oceans that lie beyond countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), known as the high seas. Notably, the high seas make up more than 60 per cent of the world’s oceans and almost half of the planet’s surface but receive little to no attention since there are no borders. The long-awaited treaty will work to reverse marine biodiversity losses and ensure sustainable development. The discussions ran as long as they did due to the economic interests which included developing nations wanting larger shares of the so-called "blue economy" and an agreement on the sharing of “marine genetic resources”. Deep sea mining might begin with no regulations In March, the UN associated, 167-nation body, International Seabed Authority (ISA) convened in Kingston, Jamaica to negotiate on creating a legally binding document which would set the rules for how deep sea mining would be regulated in the high seas. As the discussions began, the ISA chief was criticised by diplomats who claimed that he has been pushing them to accelerate the process of beginning deep-sea mining. The ISA recently faced pressure from the tiny Pacific nation, Nauru, which triggered a clause in 2021 that would allow it to demand the adoption of the rules which are still being negotiated within two years. The decision to allow permit applications by July 9 came by the end of March after the ISA’s governing council formulated a draft decision due to the triggered clause. As per a document seen by Reuters, the council plans to meet virtually before July to debate if the approval of these permits can be delayed. UN to deal with world’s plastic problem Last month, a UN committee met to negotiate a landmark legally binding global plastics treaty in Paris which would ideally end global plastic pollution. The debate was about whether the countries should limit the production of more plastics or recycle plastic waste, with the plastic-producing and oil and gas companies supporting the latter and environmental groups in favour of the former. At the end of the recently concluded second meeting in France, the decision to come up with a “zero-draft” by the end of November came at the 11th hour ahead of a third round of talks in Nairobi after some reported “nit-picking” and “delaying tactics” by countries, said the French foreign minister COP28 summit: The way forward? It has been a year of historic decision-making and passing contentious deals involving hundreds of countries across the world. So what’s next? The next COP meeting is already garnering criticism and has come under scrutiny after its host UAE selected Sultan al-Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to lead the upcoming climate summit. As per AFP, while Al-Jaber favours the rapid development of renewable energy he has also supposedly focused more on the use of controversial technologies to capture carbon dioxide as opposed to reducing emissions by limiting fossil fuels. The COP28 climate summit is set to take place in December. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
