Markets are flooded with E-cigarettes or commonly known as vapes. Its easy availability and being a cheaper alternative to cigarettes make it popular amongst people. With vapes being in high demand, it has led to a new problem of how to dispose of them properly. Alyson Le Grange reports.

A new environmental problem: E-Cigarettes

Environmentalists condemned Brazil for sinking a six-decade-old aircraft carrier “Sao Paulo” in the Atlantic Ocean saying that the ageing warship was packed with toxic materials and will cause destruction to the marine food chain. The decommissioned aircraft carrier was sunk in the ocean late in the afternoon on Friday by the Brazilian Navy after authorities failed to find a port ready to welcome the vessel.

Brazil’s Navy statement called the sinking “planned and controlled" which was at about 350 km (220 miles) off the Brazilian coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The Navy added that the sinking took place in an area with an approximate depth of 5,000 metres (16,000 feet).

According to environmentalists, the sinking of the warship will harm and pollute the marine food chain as the aircraft contained tonnes of asbestos, heavy metals and other toxic materials that would leach into the water. However, defence officials defended the sinking saying that the vessel was to be lowered down in the safest area.

The move by the Navy also received a strong reaction from Basel Action Network, a charitable non-governmental organisation, which champions global environmental health and justice by catalyzing a toxic-free future.

The Basel Action Network called out newly-elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asking him to immediately halt the "dangerous” plan to scuttle the ship. This comes as Lula, who took office last month, vowed to reverse spike in environmental destruction under former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Brazil sinks six-decade-old aircraft carrier 'Sao Paulo' in Atlantic, why it got flak from environmentalists?

By 2050 electric vehicles could require huge amounts of lithium for their batteries, causing damaging expansions of mining. U.S. would require three times as much lithium as is currently produced for the entire global market, causing needless water shortages, Indigenous land grabs, and ecosystem destruction inside and outside its borders.

Watch: 30-foot humpback whale washes up at the Jersey Shore; experts launch investigation

A study, published in the journal Science on Thursday, found that 80 per cent, or 4 out of every 5 glaciers, would likely disappear by the end of this century at current climate change trends. The findings showed that the world's glaciers are shrinking and disappearing faster than scientists previously thought and in the coming years, that could be a key contributor to sea level rise, a threat to the millions of people living near the coastlines.

But if the world manages to fulfil international goals and meet the best-case climate scenario, technically possible but unlikely according to several experts, less than half the globe's glaciers will move towards extinction, the study concluded. Well-known and small glaciers will be the first to go extinct, the authors of the study stated.

The study examined all of the world's 215,000 land-based glaciers, except the ones on ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, with the help of computer simulations that calculate, using different levels of warming, how many glaciers could disappear and how much it would contribute to sea level rise.

Projected glacial mass loss by 2100 ranges from 38.7 trillion metric tonnes to 64.4 trillion tonnes, which depends on several factors including how much the globe warms and how much coal, oil and gas is burned.

Since the world is currently on track for a 2.7-degree Celsius (4.9-degree Fahrenheit) temperature rise since pre-industrial times, we could be losing 32 per cent of the world’s glacier mass or 48.5 trillion metric tonnes of ice by 2100. This means that about 68 per cent of the glaciers might disappear by the end of this century.

The study calculates that all that melting glaciers can raise the world’s sea level anywhere from 90mm (3.5 inches) in the best-case scenario to 166mm in the worst-case scenario, which is an increase of four per cent to 14 per cent to previous projections. The study’s lead author David Rounce confirmed that the sea level can rise by 115 millimetres (4.5 inches) in present scenarios.

Researchers also stated that future sea level rise will be driven more by melting ice sheets than glaciers. And, added that the loss of glaciers is about more than just rising seas. It means increased risk from flood events, shrinking water supplies and losing historic ice-covered spots from Alaska to the Alps to the area near Mount Everest’s base camp.

4 out of 5 glaciers projected to disappear by 2100, study finds

Marine ecologists in their research have observed that many species of fish lost food as a result of mass coral bleaching. This particularly affected the 38 species of butterflyfish. The colourfully patterned reef fish are amongst the first to be hit by the effects of bleaching primarily because they eat coral, which means their food source is directly under threat. Sally Keith, a marine ecologist at Britain's Lancaster University who spoke to AFP said that the history's worst global bleaching events in 2016 offered a perfect opportunity to study fish behaviour.

After returning to the same spot after a year, researchers were shocked to see the devastation of the reefs and the subsequent dearth of food for the butterflyfish.

"That changed the playing field of who's eating what," Keith said, putting different species of butterflyfish in increased competition for other types of coral.

The most common tactic of a butterfly fish to signal to a competitor that a particular reef is theirs is by pointing its nose down and raising its spiny dorsal fins.

The team observed 3,700 encounters between butterflyfish. Before the coral bleaching event, different species of butterflyfish were able to settle disputes using signalling around 28 per cent of the time. But, those numbers plummeted to 10 per cent after the bleaching event, indicating many 'unnecessary fights' according to the new study in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

United Kingdom's Notpla: Amongst the winners, one was a project based in the UK that provides a waste-free solution by creating bio-degradable and natural plastic, which is made of seaweed. The company, which is run by Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, has supplied more than a million takeaway food boxes to Just Eat, a food delivery platform.

Australia's Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef: The Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef from Australia were selected for running a programme under which 60 women were trained in both digital and traditional ocean conservation methods.

Oman's 44.01: Talal Hasan's project 44.01 in Oman has a unique proposition for its clients where it ensures to turn carbon dioxide into peridotite, a rock found in abundance globally as well in Oman. The project offers safe and low-cost alternative methods for storing carbon, like burying it in disused oil wells.

What is the annual Earthshot Prize?

Prince William founded the Earthshot Prize in 2021 to provide funds for projects that work towards saving the planet.

This is the second edition of the Earthshot Prize after the first edition was held last year. The name of the prize takes reference from the "Moonshot" ambition of US President John F Kennedy in the 1960s to make a man land over the Moon in a decade.

Every year five Earthshot Prizes worth $1.2 million will be awarded till 2030 to extend support to environmental innovation projects that can help build a better future. On December 5, nominations will be open for the 2023 edition of the Earthshot Prize.

They make stoves which are fired using processed biomass which constitutes wood, charcoal and sugarcane instead of solid fuels, which can lead to accidents and air pollution. India's Kheyti: Greenhouse-in-a-Box, founded and run by Kaushik Kappagantulu in India, is helping small-hold farmers in protecting their crops from pests and harsh weather conditions of the country, which has suffered the severe impact of climate change. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East has increased its activity and is now in danger of erupting violently, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team said on Sunday.

"As growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumaroles activity, an incandescence of the lava dome, explosions, and hot avalanches accompanies this process," the observatory said on its website.

"Ash explosions up to 10-15 kilometres (9.32 miles) ... could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft."

For the fourth time in the past six years, Scotland is entirely snow-free. The Sphinx in the Cairngorms, which had previously been the UK's longest-lasting snow patch, has melted.

The infamous patch had vanished in the last 24 hours, according to snow expert Iain Cameron's report on Friday.

Records show that it has already dissolved completely in the years 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017, 2018, and this year, 2022.

It is believed that the last time it melted completely was in the 1700s, before 1933.

Since the 1960s, researchers have also noticed a tendency toward warmer weather, and they predicted that by the 2080s, Cairngorm would experience some years with little to no snowfall.

'Snow-free' Scotland: No snow in the country for fourth time in six years

According to a report by BBC Panorama, the company that runs Britain’s biggest power station and burns millions of tonnes of imported wood pellets has been using some wood from Canada’s primary forests. This is after Drax takes billions of pounds of taxpayer money in green energy subsidies.

This use of wood pellets is classed as renewable energy and while burning wood is considered green, environmentalists argue otherwise. The company had earlier claimed that they only use sawdust and waste wood. However, the investigation unearthed evidence that Drax has been felling environmentally-important forests in Canada’s British Columbia. The team from BBC analysed satellite images, traced logging licences and used drone images to support its claims.

The Drax power station, in Yorkshire, was previously a coal-powered plant and is now responsible for producing 12% of all of the UK’s renewable electricity. They have reportedly received at least 6 billion pounds in green energy subsidies from the country’s taxpayers. Drax has also bought logging licences for two environmentally-important forests in Canada the BBC alleged.

Meanwhile, the provincial authorities in Canada have reportedly highlighted the importance of old-growth forests and asked the companies to avoid logging in the area. Drax’s own responsible sourcing policy echoes a similar note saying that they will avoid “damage or disturbance” of primary and old-growth forests, said the report.

The company has reportedly told Panorama that most of the trees in the region were dead and they were logged to reduce the risk of wildfires. However, the satellite images that analysed during the investigation shows otherwise, said the report. On other hand, Drax also told the BBC they have transferred the logging licences to other companies and did not cut the forest down themselves. However, the authorities in British Columbia told reporters that the logging licences still belong to Drax.

The company later admitted that they did use logs from the forest to make wood pellets, but only species of timber not required by the industry. Furthermore, Drax reportedly asserted that the forests that Panorama has referred to are not primary forests given that they are near the roads, but BBC argues that the United Nations’ definition of primary forests does not include a provision for their proximity to roads. One of the sites was six miles away from the nearest paved road, the report said.

According to a spokesperson from Drax at least 80% of their wood is in the form of Canadian pellets and is sawmill residue which would be eventually disposed of. They further asserted they have a stringent policy regarding sustainability standards of both their own pellet production as well as their suppliers which is verified by third-party certification schemes. These revelations come ahead of the UK government's new biomass strategy which is set to be published later this year and will determine policies surrounding natural fuels including wood.

Environment ministers from about 50 countries will gather in the Democratic Republic of Congo for a pre-cop 27 Climate Summit with rich nations likely to come under pressure to raise spending to combat climate change.

WION Climate Tracker: Environment ministers to attend 'pre-cop27' summit

King Charles III will not travel to next month's COP27 climate summit in Egypt after UK Prime Minister Liz Truss "objected" to the avid environmentalist attending the meet, a report late Saturday said.

Britain's new monarch, who assumed the throne when his mother Queen Elizabeth II died last month, had intended to deliver a speech at the November 6-18 gathering, the Sunday Times reported.

But the plan has been axed after Truss -- who was appointed the Prime Minister by the late Queen just two days before she died -- opposed it during a personal audience with the new monarch at Buckingham Palace last month.

The report comes amid speculation that Britain's new leader, already under fire over her economic plans that have sparked market turmoil, could controversially scale back the country's climate change commitments.

Her newly assembled cabinet contains a number of ministers who have expressed scepticism about the so-called 2050 net zero goals, while Truss herself is seen as less enthusiastic about the policy than her predecessor Boris Johnson.

The Sunday Times said Truss is unlikely to attend COP27 -- the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) -- at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Britain hosted the last summit in the Scottish city Glasgow, when Charles, the late queen and his son William all addressed the event.

Both Downing Street and Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the report.

The newspaper said the episode was "likely to fuel tensions" between Charles and Truss, but cited a government source who claimed the audience had been "cordial" and there had "not been any row".

Meanwhile, a royal source told the paper: "It is no mystery that the King was invited to go there. He had to think very carefully about what steps to take for his first overseas tour, and he is not going to be attending COP(27)."

Under convention in Britain, all overseas official visits by members of the royal family are undertaken in accordance with advice from the government.

However, despite not attending in person, reports said the monarch still hopes to be able to contribute in some form to the conference.

The temperature outside of Paris’ Garnier Opera house reached 56 Celsius on urban planning expert Tangui Le Dantec’s thermometer as a third heatwave roasted France this week. There was hardly a tree in sight, and there was no shade.

The Place de l’Opera is one of many so-called “urban heat islands” in the French capital that lack the trees that can shade cities and cool them down, offering a crucial line of defence against the heatwaves that meteorologists warn are becoming more intense due to global warming.

Le Dantec’s thermometer registered 28 Celsius just a minute’s walk away, in the shade along the Boulevard des Italiens’ tree-lined path.

“Immediately, there’s a bit of a breeze ... You can breathe,’ Le Dantec, who founded Aux Arbres Citoyens, an action group opposed to tree felling.

Paris has a low percentage of green space compared to other major cities. The World Cities Culture Forum reports that only 10% of Paris is made up of green space, such as parks and gardens, compared to 33% in London and 68% in Oslo.

According to the national weather service Meteo France, last month was the warmest July on record in France. The scorching temperatures highlighted the need to improve the capital’s natural defences against climate change.

By 2026, Paris City Hall hopes to establish “islands of freshness” and will have planted 170,000 trees. Additionally, it is removing the concrete from dozens of school yards and replacing it with dirt and plants.

“In Paris, Schoolyard Oases account for nearly two hectares of vegetation over 100 schoolyards, so it is already significant. And then, we also make the streets greener,” said Jacques Baudrier, deputy Paris mayor tasked with the green ecological transition in buildings.

However, City Hall’s environmental goals have led to a number of demonstrations. Le Dantec and other environmental activists claim that numerous decades-old trees had been cut down by the local government to make place for garden areas.

In reshaping the city’s landscape, the authorities’ own goals are at odds with the removal of mature trees since new saplings are less effective at fending off heat radiation and are more susceptible to drought.

In order to fulfill Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s idea for a “green belt” around the city, Thomas Brail captured video of more than 70 trees being cut down in April on the city’s northern borders.

Paris cannot be remodelled to better combat climate change, according to urban planners at City’s Hall, without cutting down some trees, but Brail disagreed.

“These trees had a role to play (in fighting heat),” the activist said.

The temperature outside of Paris’ Garnier Opera house reached 56 Celsius on urban planning expert Tangui Le Dantec’s thermometer as a third heatwave roasted France this week.

Heatwave in Paris reveals paucity of trees in the city

An internet initiative named Birds and Debris received photos from contributors from all over the world.

According to the project's experts, they frequently observe birds caught in various objects, such as rope, fishing line, balloon ribbon, and flip-flops, where they are either nesting or entangled.

Birds are depicted nesting or tangling in disposable face masks in about a quarter of the photos.

The project's main objective is to document how garbage, especially plastic pollution, affects the avian community.

According to Dr. Alex Bond, a researcher with the Natural History Museum in London and one of the study's authors, "basically, if a bird constructs a nest utilising long fibrous materials—like seaweed, branches, or reeds—the odds are it will have human garbage in its nest someplace."

He and his colleagues have been working on this initiative for four years in an effort to raise awareness of the pervasive issue of plastic garbage in the environment.

You'll find this stuff everywhere once you start looking for it, he continued. We received reports from Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, and North America, demonstrating the issue's really worldwide scale.

The team recently conducted research to determine how many photographs submitted contain personal protective equipment connected to the epidemic (PPE). They discovered that it was present in approximately a quarter of the pictures.

"Almost everything is a mask," Dr. Bond stated. "And if you consider the various components that go into making a surgical mask, you might consider the elastic that gets twisted around the legs of birds or the hard piece of plastic that holds it over your nose that may cause injury to birds trying to consume it.

So, even though we refer to a variety of different polymers collectively as "plastic," masks are a fantastic example of that.

According to the researchers, they want to draw attention to the "systemic problem" that causes such a large amount of waste to enter the ecosystem.

Justine Ammendolia, the lead researcher from Dalhousie University in Canada, told BBC News that it was "devastating" to witness the scope of the impact on species worldwide.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the transcontinental relocation of cheetahs from Africa to India was signed on Tuesday by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and Indian Oil Corporation. According to the MoU, the IOC would fund Rs 50.22 crore over four years for the project. The project now costs Rs 75 crore in total.

In a statement from the Union Environment Ministry, the MoU is a continuation of the agreement on wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity exploitation that the governments of India and Namibia signed on July 20 in order to rehabilitate the cheetah to its former range in India.

The money donated by Indian Oil as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme will be utilised to restore the cheetah's habitat and reintroduce it to its former range.

In the presence of Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IOC Chairman SM Vaidya and NTCA Member Secretary and Additional Director General (Project Tiger), Dr. S P Yadav.

“Indian Oil is the first corporate which has come forward to support the ‘Project Cheetah’ under CSR, as the project has not only national importance but is also essential for balancing the ecosystem. Cheetah has a very special significance for the national conservation ethic and ethos. Cheetah restoration will be part of a prototype for restoration of original cheetah habitats and their biodiversity, helping to stem the degradation and rapid loss of biodiversity,’’ said the ministry statement.

The Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus), a subspecies of the cheetah, went extinct in India, and the African Cheetah has since been imported (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus). These two subspecies have the same genes, according to studies.

A 500-hectare predator-proof enclosure is being built as part of the cheetah introduction project in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh in preparation for the cat's "soft release." There will be several phases to the introduction. A small number of people will be released at first following the creation of the "soft-release enclosure" and improvement of security.

It should be emphasised that Indian Oil has supported rhino conservation efforts and last year chose the Indian single-horned rhino as its emblem.

Indian Oil Corporation to give Rs 50 crore for Cheetah relocation from Africa

Sprite is ditching its signature green bottle—which has been in use for more than 60 years—and replacing it with a more sustainable clear container.

The Coca-Cola Co.—Sprite’s parent company—in a statement on Wednesday said that the new design will start rolling out on August 1 and is part of an effort to “support a circular economy for plastic packaging."

The current green plastic is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is often converted into single-use items such as carpets and clothing.

But the company said that it is easier to reuse clear plastic than green one for new bottles.

“When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into [new] bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic," Julian Ochoa, chief executive officer of R3CYCLE —a recycling company that works with Coca-Cola Consolidated, said in a statement Wednesday.

However, cans and packaging graphics of Sprite will still be green, but its logo will change.

The lemon-lime soft drink has been packaged in green colour ever since it was first launched in the US in 1961. According to Coke, the drink has been one of its bestselling products.

Coke said the move to switch to the clear plastic bottle would help support “a circular economy for plastic packaging”.

In some foreign countries, Sprite has already switched to clear plastic bottles with specific flavours like cherry and sugar-free.

Coca-Cola also announced that the bottled water brand Dasani will be made from 100 per cent recycled PET plastic. The move will reduce plastic waste by 20 million pounds compared with what was used in 2019, according to the release.

Sprite ditches its signature green bottle for clear white, cites environmental reasons

Intragenerational and intergenerational equity is enshrined in the World Declaration on the Environmental Rule of Law. This article discusses the meaning and analyzes the importance of these principles for the future development of environmental law. The relation of these principles to the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992) is also discussed with their use in judicial opinions, legislation, and policies.

The principles of intragenerational and intergenerational equity are very crucial and important while drafting environmental laws and are primarily focused on the achievement of climate justice (Bhardwaj, 2018). Before 2015, in the absence of the Paris Agreement, the international environmental legal framework was facing repetitive criticism for not observing these equity principles as important concerns caused by climate change (Adelman, 2010). Environmental law should primarily include both inter and intra-generational equity as an important basis for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on the present & future generations and also between the people of the same generation based on their economic status. While intragenerational equity is significantly important, almost every equity debate related to climate justice in the environmental law discourse has been focused on intergenerational equity.

Even the beacon of environmental law framework i.e. Paris agreement also links the intergenerational equity with the climate change action, as in its preamble it is mentioned that, “Acknowledging that climate change is a common concern of humankind, Parties should, when taking action to address climate change, respect, promote and consider their respective obligations on human rights, the right to health, the rights of indigenous peoples, local communities, migrants, children, persons with disabilities and people in vulnerable situations and the right to development, as well as gender equality, empowerment of women and intergenerational equity.”

Before the existence of the Paris agreement, there was no sufficient focus on intergenerational and intragenerational equity in any of the environmental law instruments (Kverndokk, Nævdal & Nøstbakken, 2014). This can also be traced from the Rio Declaration as there is no explicit use of the word “equity” in the document but it has been, later on, developed by academicians and jurists through the other principles in the declaration. In the Rio Declaration, Principle 3 creates a thought of imbalance between the right to development and the needs of future generations. Principle 3 combines these two components by stating that:

“The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations.” Apart from the numerous treaties speaking about the need to take into account future generations, at the 2012 Rio Summit different momentum was given to the idea of institutionalizing intergenerational equity in some form, as analyzed in a report by the UN Secretary-General discussing different options1. Despite the shifts, which reflect the increasing importance of international environmental law on legal categories, the policy process is moving in the direction of giving more and more importance to development considerations under the malleable banner of sustainable development.

Most of the research emphasizes either intra- or intergenerational equity, thereby unexpressed understanding that the two concepts can be studied separately. But this is not the exact case, as choices that affect intergenerational distribution also affect the intragenerational distribution between generations. As Heal (2009) mentions, there are two ways in which preferences for equality affect the choice of climate action. First, high elasticity of the marginal utility of consumption leads to less aggressive action if we believe that consumption increases over time. The reason is that this makes future generations richer, and if we care about inequality between the present and future generations, we place a lower value on the richer future generations (intergenerational equity). There is, however, an additional effect.

The rich countries are primarily responsible for the aggregate level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, while as mentioned above, the poor countries are likely to suffer the most from climate change (concept of climate justice). Hence, if we put a low weight on future outcomes, climate change is more likely to occur, and poor countries may suffer more (intragenerational equity). Consequently, the gap between the welfare levels of the rich and the poor may be higher, and based on the latter effect, stronger preferences for equality should go in the direction of more action to help prevent climate change.

Intragenerational and intergenerational equity in the future development of environmental law

In Italy, an environmental activist has made an exceptional discovery. The diver has uncovered the cargo of a roman ship that reportedly sunk nearly about 2000 years ago.

Next year onwards, all clothing items sold in France would require a label containing information about the precise climate impact the manufacture has had. It is expected that a similar rule would come into effect in the European Union by 2026.

This may mean clothing brands would have to juggle many data points: Where and how were its raw materials grown? What was used to colour it? How far did it travel? Was the factory powered with solar energy or coal?

The French Agency for Ecological Transition (Ademe) is currently testing 11 proposals for how to collect and compare data — and what the resulting label might look like to consumers — using 500 real-life items of clothing.

“The message of the law is clear — it will become obligatory, so brands need to prepare, to make their products traceable, to organise the automatic collection of data,” Erwan Autret, one of the coordinators at Ademe, told AFP.

“Some say the models are too simple, some say they’re too complicated, but it’s a sign of the maturity of the debate that no one questions the need for these calculations anymore.”

As per United Nations, the fashion industry is responsible for 10 per cent of global carbon emissions. It is also responsible for a significant portion of water consumption and waste.

Campaigners say that labels can go a long way to address the environmental impact.

“It will force brands to be more transparent and informed... to collect data and create long-term relationships with their suppliers — all things they’re not used to doing,” said Victoire Satto, of The Good Goods, It is a media agency focused on sustainable fashion.

“Right now it seems infinitely complex,” she added. “But we’ve seen it applied in other industries such as medical supplies.”

A presentation by Paris-based textiles conference, Premiere Vision, put emphasis on new processes that included non-toxic leather tanning, dyes from fruits and waste and even biodegradable underwear.

But Ariane Bigot, Premiere Vision’s deputy head of fashion, said that the key to sustainability is using the right fabric for the right garment.

That means synthetic and oil-based fabrics will still have a place, she said: “A strong synthetic with a very long lifespan might be right for some uses, such as an over-garment that needs little washing.”

Capturing all these trade-offs in one simple label on an item of clothing is therefore tricky.

“It’s very complicated,” said Bigot. “But we need to get the machine started.”

“Some say the models are too simple, some say they’re too complicated, but it’s a sign of the maturity of the debate that no one questions the need for these calculations anymore.” As per United Nations, the fashion industry is responsible for 10 per cent of global carbon emissions. “But we’ve seen it applied in other industries such as medical supplies.” A presentation by Paris-based textiles conference, Premiere Vision, put emphasis on new processes that included non-toxic leather tanning, dyes from fruits and waste and even biodegradable underwear. In France, clothes to carry labels with climate impact info

The Russian-Ukraine war prompted one of the worst humanitarian crises in Europe since World War II. It has also led to serious environmental consequences.

Environmental costs of Russia-Ukraine war are immense

UK chapter of Greenpeace, the environmental activism group has held colonialism responsible for environment emergency. The group has also said that systemic racism has also been a cause why people of colour have and continue to face worst of detriorating environment. The report says that people of colour, despite having contributed the least to emission of Greenhouse gases are now “disproportionately losing their lives and livelihoods” by millions.

Colonialism “established a model through which the air and lands of the global south have been … used as places to dump waste the global north does not want,” says the report.

A similar argument is quite often raised by developing countries around the world on global forums. These countries contend that developed nations have released greenhouse gases in almost unfettered way in past centuries to get where they are now and when developing nations seek to ensure their own development, there is increased pressure on them to limit emissions.

The report by Greenpeace sheds light on inequalities even within the developed nations. It says that in UK, almost half of all waste-burning incinerators are located in neighbourhoods populated mainly by people of colour. Even in London, the report says that black people are more likely to breathe air with illegal level of pollutants.
