Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has strongly defended himself against claims he put himself first with his ill-fated decision to play Marcus Rashford against Wolves in the FA Cup.

Former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright said this week that Solskjaer, under intense pressure to improve the club's fortunes, prioritised his own needs over those of his player.

United are in fifth place in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;in the race for the Champions League qualification spots.

But the Norwegian boss insisted that Rashford was fit enough to play in the 1-0 win for United, in which the 22-year-old substitute lasted just 16 minutes.

"I never put myself before the team," Solskjaer said on Tuesday. "I always put the team and the club before anything else.

"Marcus has had minor discomfort in his back since the Burnley game, two weeks before this game (Wolves).

"We've had scans, we've monitored him, there was no injury there, just complaints."

Solskjaer, whose team host Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday, said he had spoken to Rashford in the build-up to the match.

"I had a conversation with him two days before and told him I was going to rest him," he said. "He felt fine and was very adamant that if needed, he could do at least half an hour as we wanted to go through in the cup.

"That shows you Marcus's attitude."

Solskjaer said he did not regret throwing his star striker into the fray.

"That is part of what you do for Man Utd," he said. "Every time you play, you put your body on the line.

"I've suffered some injuries for the club and that is what you are proud to do when you are a Man Utd player."

Solskjaer's biggest headache now is how to cope without his leading scorer and talisman as he battles to finish in the Premier League's top four.

United's attack looked weak without him in the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday and Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are the only striking options for the Burnley game.

"That is the million-dollar question for us because Marcus has been fantastic," Solskjaer said.

"Someone has got to step up. If we find something in the transfer market, that might be one solution.

"But the best solution is the players stepping up and making sure they are ready and taking the chance."

Premier League: English derby ends in draw, David Luiz sees red

Liverpool came through a high-octane tussle with old rivals Manchester United to win 2-0 at Anfield and move 16 points clear at the top of the table on Sunday, sparking a chorus of "we are going to win the league" from their now expectant fans. Juergen Klopp's side, chasing their maiden title in the Premier League era and first in the top flight in 30 years, took a 14th-minute lead from a Virgil van Dijk header but had to wait until stoppage time to put the game to bed through Mohamed Salah. With a game in hand on second-placed Manchester City, Liverpool's grip on the title race tightened and while Klopp was not about to echo the euphoric sentiments of the club's jubilant fans, he was upbeat about his team's display. "It's a big relief, I was really happy with 85-90% of the game, we were brilliant. We dominated the game, especially in the first half. The energy they put on the pitch was incredible," said the German, whose side have dropped just two points in 22 games. For United, who battled hard but were outclassed in all departments, it was another reminder of just how much work is ahead of them if they are to get back to being in contention for titles. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered another blow to his hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with the news that his top scorer Marcus Rashford was not only out for the trip to Anfield but could face several weeks on the sidelines with a back injury. United are in fifth place in the league, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and while no-one could question the commitment of Solskjaer's players it is clear he needs some immediate transfer reinforcements. "The players gave us everything. Today we hung on a bit at the start of the second half, but the last 25-30 minutes we pressed them and pushed them back. I'm disappointed with conceding from a corner and with the last kick - but very many positives," he said. Firm header After a promising start from the visitors, Van Dijk put Liverpool ahead with a firm header after he was poorly marked by United, who allowed him to rise and nod in a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner. Roberto Firmino thought he had scored a second but a VAR review ruled that Van Dijk had fouled United keeper David de Gea before the ball fell to the Brazilian. Liverpool had the ball in the net again when Georginio Wijnaldum slotted home after a clever defence-splitting pass from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but the Dutchman was ruled narrowly offside. United's attacking forages were rare but they caused some anxiety for Klopp when Andreas Pereira slid in but could not make contact with a low ball across the face of the goal from Aaron Wan Bissaka. Yet after the break, Liverpool looked determined to put the outcome beyond doubt. Salah missed a glorious chance from close range just after the interval during an intense period of pressure from the home side, in which Jordan Henderson also hit the post. United survived that blitz and clawed their way back into the game and could even have snatched an equaliser but Anthony Martial blasted high and wide in the 59th minute. Solskjaer's side applied some late pressure but were caught on the counter-attack in the final moments when, with all United players forward, Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker launched a long ball for Salah who raced clear before slotting home and settling Anfield's nerves. "It's special. We're enjoying our football. You have to stay hungry and keep wanting more," said Henderson, who looks well set to be raising another piece of silverware at the end of this campaign after lifting the Champions League trophy last season.

Premier League: Liverpool go 16 points clear with 2-0 win over Manchester United

Burnley recovered from a goal down to beat high-flying Leicester City 2-1 at Turf Moor on Sunday, ending their four-match losing streak in the Premier League. Sean Dyche's Clarets failed to score a first-half goal for an 11th successive league game, and their problems worsened when midfielder Harvey Barnes put the visitors ahead with a stunning solo effort in the 33rd minute.

Jack Cork lost the ball in midfield and Burnley-born winger Barnes broke forward, racing goalwards and past Ben Mee before firing home. The hosts responded after the interval with striker Chris Wood scoring the equaliser from a rebound after Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel saved a header from Mee. Leicester, third in the standings, had an opportunity to reclaim the lead when Mee brought down Barnes in the box but Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope kept out Jamie Vardy's weak penalty. The turnaround was complete, with 11 minutes remaining, when Ashley Westwood blasted in after a Charlie Taylor cross from the left to ensure Burnley took all three points, lifting them to 14th place in the table, five points above the relegation zone. "I thought we deserved to win the game but we didn't take our chances," said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers. "A mixture of their keeper making some brilliant saves and our finishing and we somehow lost the game," he added. Dyche credited his side for delivering when many had begun to question their chances of survival this season. "I thought the performance was there and we had worked on it all week, so I was pleased with that. We delivered with a mentality to perform under a few question marks," he added. Pope, who made some vital saves in the second half, was delighted the team's losing streak was over. "It's a massive win for us. The lads worked so hard and the atmosphere was electric. You go on bad runs during the season so to snap them quickly is important," he said. "To lose four on the spin is hard, but to go a goal down and react like we did against a good team is great."

Juergen Klopp's unbeaten side were not at their best and had to withstand a Spurs fightback after the break but hung on for a 20th win out of 21 league games this season to move further ahead of second-placed Leicester City with a game in hand.

Liverpool's total of 61 points is the most after 21 games of a Premier League season, beating <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/striker-less-aston-villa-hold-on-for-draw-at-leicester-273173">Manchester City's</a> 59 from two seasons ago, and has never been surpassed in the Spanish, Italian, German or French leagues at the same stage.

Firmino's 37th-minute effort proved enough for&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;to march on towards a first English title since 1989-90, but Tottenham substitute <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-spurs-close-in-on-last-16-berth-with-4-0-rout-of-red-star-260412">Giovani Lo Celso</a> wasted a glorious chance to earn the hosts a draw with a glaring late miss.

Liverpool's fans stood to acclaim their side at the end and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, who has now won only two of 11 games against&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/klopps-kids-knock-everton-out-of-fa-cup-272440">Juergen Klopp</a>, shook hands with every opposition player at the final whistle.

"I'm over the moon about the result, but we have to talk about the performance," a rather subdued Klopp said later.

"One team deserved to win and that was us. To win at Tottenham is pretty special. That the game wasn't decided after 50-60 minutes was our fault. We should have scored more goals.

"We were on the ground towards the end. A couple of our players were slightly exhausted, but we fought through that," he added after his side stretched their lead over Leicester, who had earlier lost 2-1 at home to Southampton.

BIG WIN! ✊https://t.co/JbUsCmD0Ar — Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 11, 2020 × Juergen Klopp's unbeaten side were not at their best and had to withstand a Spurs fightback after the break but hung on for a 20th win out of 21 league games this season to move further ahead of second-placed Leicester City with a game in hand. Liverpool's total of 61 points is the most after 21 games of a Premier League season, beating Manchester City's 59 from two seasons ago, and has never been surpassed in the Spanish, Italian, German or French leagues at the same stage. [ Tottenham's Giovani Lo Celso misses a chance to score (Courtesy: Reuters) ] Firmino's 37th-minute effort proved enough for Liverpool to march on towards a first English title since 1989-90, but Tottenham substitute Giovani Lo Celso wasted a glorious chance to earn the hosts a draw with a glaring late miss. Liverpool's fans stood to acclaim their side at the end and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, who has now won only two of 11 games against Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp, shook hands with every opposition player at the final whistle. Premier League: Tottenham's Kane ruled out for three months with hamstring injury

Manchester United midfielder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-considering-january-reinforcements-with-pogba-mctominay-injured-271629">Paul Pogba</a> posted a series of bizarre videos on social media after undergoing ankle surgery on Tuesday before confirming the procedure had been successful.

Apparently still feeling the effects of the anaesthetic, Pogba posted videos on Instagram saying he was unsure if he was "high or sober" and that he was blessed to be alive, before talking about needing a haircut.

He later deleted the stories and replaced them with a shorter one in which he appeared less groggy.

"It's me I'm back. Everything went well. We have to keep the positive energy," the French World Cup winner said.

"You have to keep happy, so I'll put some music on and dance on one leg obviously... you know me you have to keep the smile."

Pogba, who has made only eight appearances in all competitions this season, has been repeatedly linked by British media with a move away from United but his agent <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/paul-pogba-must-put-his-head-down-focus-on-manchester-uniteds-pre-season-bryan-robson-236301">Mino Raiola</a> told Sky Sports last month that the midfielder would be staying at Old Trafford.

Pogba's recovery is expected to keep him out of action for up to four weeks. The 26-year-old was sidelined for three months earlier this season with another ankle injury.

United will host local rivals <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/fa-cup-solskjaer-needs-time-to-make-lasting-impact-at-manchester-united-guardiola-272687">Manchester City</a> in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals later on Tuesday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-tottenham-suffer-kane-injury-blow-271656">Jose Mourinho</a> says Tottenham will be "intelligent" in the January transfer window and there will be no quick fixes at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-unbeaten-for-a-year-liverpool-271841">Premier League</a> club.

Mourinho has repeatedly said that he will not be overhauling his squad this month and that any business could be dependent on players leaving.

One player who appears to be on his way out of the club is midfielder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">Christian Eriksen</a>, whose contact expires in June, but it is not certain he will depart this month.

Mourinho, whose side have stumbled in recent weeks, walked into the club with his eyes wide open and said he was on the same page as chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-aiming-to-take-spurs-and-kane-to-the-next-level-263998">Daniel Levy</a>.

"That was very clear for me and is very important for me to understand that before I came," said the Portuguese boss, who took over from the sacked Mauricio Pochettino in November.

"This is our first transfer window, not the last," he added. "We are going to have one in the summer, we are going to have one in 2021 January, we are going to have another one in the summer of 2021.

"We are going to have to try to be intelligent and we have to try to make the right decisions, not just for now, but for the development of a cycle."

Spurs are struggling for numbers ahead of Sunday's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/hard-night-ahead-for-manchester-united-solskjaer-271952">FA Cup</a> trip to Middlesbrough.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/irresistible-liverpool-thrash-leicester-270476">Harry Kane</a>, Tanguy Ndombele, Ben Davies, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-spurs-close-in-on-last-16-berth-with-4-0-rout-of-red-star-260412">Danny Rose</a> and Hugo Lloris are all injured and many players have played three games over the Christmas period.

Mourinho said he was likely to call on youth at the Riverside but emphasised that such a move did not mean the FA Cup was not important for the eight-time winners.

"Everybody's going to be involved," he said. "If you go to our squad and no Rose, no Davies, no Lloris, no Kane. I don't know if <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Eric Dier</a> will be ready but he is still to come back.

Their sights set on domestic bliss, the new year started just as the old one finished, with&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;setting standards of excellence that rival anything achieved by City's breath-taking team.

Premier League immortality is within touching distance as Klopp's men are already over halfway towards an&nbsp;unbeaten&nbsp;league season that would replicate the incredible feat of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-dominate-manchester-united-in-first-win-for-arteta-271539">Arsenal</a>'s 2003-04 Invincibles.

Klopp's Liverpool: Premier League's unbeaten team stays hungry

Arsenal earned their first win under new coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Mikel Arteta</a> by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis.

Club record signing Pepe put Arsenal ahead in the 10th minute of their third game under their former player by lashing into the net after good work down the left flank from Sead Kolasinac.

Pepe later hit the post in a dominant first-half display from Arsenal before defender Sokratis deservedly doubled their lead in the 42nd minute by pouncing on some hesitant defending from the visitors following a corner.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-boss-arteta-gives-playmaker-ozil-benefit-of-the-doubt-270933">Arsenal</a> comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain fifth on 31 points after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above United.

Arsenal earned their first win under new coach Mikel Arteta by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis. Arsenal comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain fifth on 31 points after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above United. "I think it was great. We were great in the first half and showed a maturity in the second," said Arsenal defender David Luiz. "Mikel Arteta is a great coach, he was a great player. Premier League: Arsenal dominate Manchester United in first win for Arteta

Manchester United could be forced to recruit midfielders during the January transfer window with the injured Paul&nbsp;Pogba&nbsp;and Scott McTominay set for lengthy spells on the sidelines, manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/solskjaer-says-smiles-back-on-manchester-united-faces-ahead-of-derby-266672">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> said on Wednesday.

Pogba&nbsp;is set to undergo surgery to treat an ankle problem that will rule the Frenchman out of action for around a month, while McTominay is out for longer with knee ligament damage sustained in last week's win over Newcastle United.

Pogba, who has been linked frequently with a potential move away from United, spent over two months sidelined with an injury to his left ankle and has only made eight appearances for his club in all competitions.

"We've had scans, it's nothing major but it's something that has to be sorted and dealt with within a time frame," Solskjaer told a news conference after United's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pogba-set-to-return-for-manchester-uniteds-trip-to-arsenal-270927">Pogba</a>&nbsp;played no part in.

"He's been advised to do it as soon as possible. We've been without him all season, it's a big blow.

"Scott will be out for a few months. He's been magnificent and we just hope that Paul can come back within a month or so... We've been suffering a little bit, especially in midfield and we've got to cope with it."

Solskjaer said the absence of the two influential midfielders would play a part in the club's decision-making process on whether to sign reinforcements this month.

"We've got loads of games and important games. But still, it's got to be right and that's the big point here," the Norwegian manager added.

"If it's available and if it's possible we'll do something, definitely. We're looking at one or two (potential signings)."

Pogba's future at United remains the subject of much transfer speculation, especially since recent comments from his agent Mino Raiola criticising the club.

"Now&nbsp;Pogba's problem is Manchester (United)," <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-ac-milan-offer-ibrahimovic-six-month-deal-reports-263650">Raiola</a> told sources.

"It's a club out of touch with reality, without a sports project. I would no longer take anyone there. They would even ruin (Diego) Maradona, Pele and (Paolo) Maldini. Paul needs a club and a squad, one like Juventus was before."

Manchester United considering January reinforcements with Pogba, McTominay injured

Two goals from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-gabriel-jesus-hat-trick-gives-man-city-4-1-win-at-dinamo-zagreb-267832">Gabriel Jesus</a> helped a nervy&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;City&nbsp;earn a 2-1 victory over Everton at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, as new manager Carlo Ancelotti suffered his first Premier League defeat since taking charge of the Merseyside club.

Ancelotti had enjoyed two wins from two before the trip to&nbsp;Manchester, but the writing appeared to be on the wall as Phil Foden thought he gave&nbsp;City&nbsp;a 13th-minute lead, only for the Video Assistant Referee (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-var-is-a-big-mess-says-guardiola-after-more-controversies-270921">VAR</a>) to spot an offside in the build-up.

For the remainder of the first half,&nbsp;City&nbsp;were not at their best, but came out after the interval with added impetus, taking the lead in 51st minute through Gabriel Jesus - the Brazilian's sixth goal in five matches against Everton.

That soon became seven in five as Jesus drilled home Riyad Mahrez's pass seven minutes later to make it two, only for stand-in&nbsp;City&nbsp;goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to gift <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-ancelottis-everton-win-again-pearson-works-watford-magic-270814">Everton</a> a way back into the match as Richarlison scored with 19 minutes left.

The home fans held their breath as&nbsp;City&nbsp;looked uneasy defensively and Everton pressed for the equaliser, but the visitors could not find that killer final pass as&nbsp;City&nbsp;held on.

City's fourth win in their last five games sees them stay one point behind second-placed Leicester&nbsp;City&nbsp;and 11 behind leaders Liverpool, having played two games more than the Reds.

Everton remain 10th.

"When you are far away from first sometimes people give up, but we never give up,"&nbsp;City&nbsp;manager Pep Guardiola said. "We have to keep going."

Guardiola made five changes from the side who beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-man-city-see-off-sheffield-united-but-var-questioned-again-270925">Sheffield United</a>, with goalkeeper Ederson ill and unable to start.

Riyad Mahrez was the man, correctly, adjudged to have been offside when Foden thought he had scored, with the hosts then taking until the 24th minute to have a shot at goal, the latest they have had to wait for a shot at goal at home since January.

Twelve of&nbsp;City’s 16 home league goals this season had come in the second half prior to Everton’s visit and it took only six minutes after the break for Jesus to strike, collecting Ilkay Gundogan’s pass before finishing well.

Another fine move saw&nbsp;City&nbsp;double their advantage, as Foden laid the ball off for Mahrez, who slid Jesus in for the Brazilian to slot home his 13th goal in all competitions this season.

Bravo was then far too casual when picking a pass, Theo Walcott drilled across goal, with Richarlison sneaking the ball in.

City&nbsp;had chances to make the game safe but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford stood firm.

"At the end, City&nbsp;deserved to win -- they were better than us," <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/carlo-ancelotti-everton-will-play-attractive-football-269894">Ancelotti</a> said. We need time to work and adjust things which are not good."

Premier League: Jesus double helps Man City inflict first defeat on Ancelotti

Beaten <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">Tottenham Hotspur</a> suffered a double injury blow in the 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Wednesday with Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele both forced off at St Mary's.

While the result was bad, the biggest worry for Tottenham manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-its-a-crime-mourinho-rages-against-festive-fixture-pile-up-270511">Jose Mourinho</a> was the sight of top scorer Kane pulling up with a left hamstring injury deep into the second half after stretching to score a goal that was ruled out for offside.

Kane, scorer of 11 Premier League goals this season, went straight down the tunnel, leaving Tottenham with scant striking options as Son Heung-min was serving the final match of his three-game ban for a red card in the defeat by Chelsea.

He was later seen leaving the stadium using crutches.

Asked about the injuries, Mourinho said: "Tanguy Ndombele, I don't know. I imagine this is (his) 10th injury of the season. They stop him to play. It doesn't give him continuity," he said.

"<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/harry-kane-says-englands-defeat-to-czech-republic-is-a-wakeup-call-255480">Harry Kane</a> plays every minute, he plays all the time. It might be big, it might be small. For sure he will be out.

"It is negative, hamstring is always negative. Is it a tear, is it a small thing, is it a contraction? At this moment I cannot say."

Kane has suffered several lengthy injury lay-offs in the last few seasons. Last season he missed a month after damaging ankle ligaments and then suffered a similar injury in April which kept him out until the Champions League final.

A third defeat in Mourinho's nine Premier League games in charge at Spurs further undermined the resurgence his arrival produced and left Tottenham in sixth spot, six points behind fourth-placed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> who drew with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Brighton and Hove Albion</a> earlier.

Mourinho said raiding the transfer market was not the answer though, now that the mid-season window is open.

"Come on, we need time to work. We need what we are not having. We need to focus on what we have," he said. "We are not looking to be the kings of the market. We are going to work.

"We see the bad result today which is the continuity of the last year. For 12 months, it has been very difficult to get results away from home.

"The work is not about buying, it is about working with the players on the pitch. It is something that is very difficult for us because we have no time to do it."

Premier League: Tottenham suffer Kane injury blow

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> produced a stunning late comeback to beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, consigning Mikel Arteta to defeat on his home debut as coach of the north London side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno's howler handed Jorginho an equaliser on a plate after 83 minutes.

Four minutes later, Tammy Abraham settled a bad-tempered London derby when he turned in the box and drilled through the hapless Leno's legs.

Arsenal, 12th, started with great intensity, forcing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Frank Lampard</a>'s tired-looking Chelsea back, until Aubameyang broke the deadlock after 13 minutes with an acrobatic header.

Lampard brought on Jorginho after 34 minutes and changed from a 3-4-3 formation to 4-3-3, as he did on Boxing Day against Southampton, and it helped the visitors find a foothold at a fired-up Emirates Stadium.

Fourth-place Chelsea, who lost five of their previous seven league games, had the better of the second half and when Leno blundered they quickly turned the screw to leave Arteta still hunting for his first win, following a draw at Bournemouth.

After <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">Aubameyang</a>'s opener, Alexandre Lacazette came close to adding a second but N'Golo Kante made a vital interception in front of goal.

The hosts showed more spark than in recent weeks but could not capitalise and Jorginho's presence helped Chelsea turn the game around after the break.

"I give credit to the boys, credit to Jorginho," said Chelsea striker Abraham. "In the first 30 minutes they dominated the ball... then this man (Jorginho) comes on and it's a whole different ball game. Him coming on lifted us as a team."

Abraham saw one effort blocked and another saved by Leno in the second half, while Arsenal substitute Joe Willock fired narrowly wide.

Arsenal complained when Jorginho, already booked, brought down Lucas Torreira, but referee Craig Pawson did not issue a second yellow card.

Then with the clock ticking down Leno missed his punch as he tried to reach Mason Mount's free kick, allowing Jorginho a simple tap-in at the far post.

Abraham and Willian broke at lightning pace and combined for the English striker to net the second against a shell-shocked Arsenal, his 12th league goal of the campaign.

For the first time since 1959, Arsenal suffered a fourth consecutive home defeat, across all competitions.

"I'm really disappointed with the result and the way we conceded the goals and the timing of it as well," said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Arteta</a>.

Pogba set to return for Manchester United's match against Arsenal

West Ham United have reappointed David Moyes as head coach on an 18-month deal to replace the sacked Manuel Pellegrini and help them move away from the bottom half of the table, the struggling Premier League club said on Sunday.

Moyes, 56, returns to the Hammers for a second stint after he saved the club from the drop in the 2017-18 campaign during a six-month deal and he will face the same task with the team languishing in 17th - a point above the relegation places.

The Scot's first game back in charge will be on Wednesday at home to fellow strugglers Bournemouth.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-west-ham-sack-pellegrini-after-leicester-defeat-270816">Pellegrini was sacked</a> after Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Leicester City, their seventh loss in nine games after a promising start to the season.

“It’s fabulous to be back,” Moyes said in a club statement. “It feels great to be home. I’ve missed being here... I enjoyed being around the stadium and I loved being in this part of the world and I missed the club, so I can’t wait to get started."

“I think there’s got to be a short-term goal for us just now to get the wins to get us away from the wrong end of the league and what we’re going to do over the next six months...”

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/david-moyes-leaves-west-ham-club-seek-high-calibre-successor-137425">Moyes was hired by West Ham</a> in November 2017 to replace Slaven Bilic with the east London club in the relegation zone and the Scotsman led them to a 13th-place finish to ensure their survival in the top flight.

But West Ham did not renew his contract and instead hired <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-man-city-see-off-sheffield-united-but-var-questioned-again-270925">Manchester City</a>'s former title-winning manager Pellegrini in the close season and he led them to a 10th-place finish last term.

But after winning only twice in the last 14 games, the club, who spent over 150 million pounds ($196.37 million) on transfers during Pellegrini's tenure, wanted to make a change quickly to give the new manager time to salvage the season.

“David proved in his short time with the club that he was capable of getting results and we believe that he will start moving the club in the right direction once again," West Ham's joint-chairman David Sullivan said in the club statement.

Moyes previously managed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-ancelottis-everton-win-again-pearson-works-watford-magic-270814">Everton</a>, Manchester United and Sunderland in the Premier League. Premier League: West Ham reappoint Moyes in bid to avoid relegation scrap

West Ham sacked manager Manuel Pellegrini after Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Leicester left the Hammers just one point above the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Premier League</a>'s relegation zone in 17th.

A run of just <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-stage-comeback-to-sink-west-ham-and-end-winless-run-267402">two wins in 14 games</a>, including seven defeats in their last nine league matches, saw patience run out with the 66-year-old former Real Madrid and Manchester City boss.

"It is with great disappointment that we've had to make this decision," West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan said in a club statement.

"Manuel is a gentleman and it has been a real pleasure to work with someone of his calibre.

"However, it has become clear that a change is required to get the club back on track in line with our ambitions this season.

"We felt it was necessary to act now in order to give the new manager as much time as possible to try and achieve that goal."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-stage-comeback-to-sink-west-ham-and-end-winless-run-267402">West Ham</a> host Bournemouth, who sit one point and one place above them in the table, on January 1.

Pellegrini has failed to provide enough of a return on a significant transfer spend over the past 18 months with over £100 million ($130 million) splashed on the likes of Felipe Anderson, Sebastien Haller, Pablo Fornals, Andriy Yarmolenko and Issa Diop.

West Ham overcame a difficult start to finish 10th in Pellegrini's first campaign in charge and began this season brightly.

After an impressive 2-0 win over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-martial-scores-twice-as-manchester-united-crush-newcastle-270486">Manchester United</a> in late September the Irons sat fifth in the table.

However, that was their last win at home and they have tumbled down the table over the past three months.&nbsp;

"Playing at home, that's where we should be getting the most points and the manager is obviously disappointed with the performances," said goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who has been sorely missed through injury over the past few months.

"For some while we've not managed to get anything playing at home."

Fabianski saved an early penalty on his return to the side on Saturday from Demarai Gray, but could still not inspire a turnaround despite Leicester making nine changes.

Jamie Vardy was among those missing due to the birth of his daughter, but Gray made amends for his earlier miss by scoring the winner after Pablo Fornals had cancelled out Kelechi Iheanacho's opener for the visitors.

Fabian Schar had levelled for Newcastle but Calvert-Lewin's fifth league goal in his last five games gave Everton the win.

Watford remain in the drop zone but Pearson is working his magic having taken over from Quique Sanchez Flores this month to become the club's third manager this season.

Pearson's side played for more than half an hour with 10 men after defender Adrian Mariappa was sent off but they already led through Troy Deeney's opener in the 42nd minute.

Watford scored again when Deeney slotted home a penalty after he was fouled by Douglas Luiz.

Ismaila Sarr added a third as Watford recorded their second successive victory under Pearson to move to within three points of 17th-placed West Ham United, who play later on Saturday.

Villa beat Norwich City on Boxing Day but defeat by Watford left them third from bottom.

Bournemouth are also too close to the relegation zone for comfort after losing 2-0 to Brighton &amp; Hove Albion in the south coast derby that kicked off the day's programme.

Iranian winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh opened the scoring with his first goal for Brighton and Aaron Mooy made the points secure in the 79th minute as Brighton claimed a vital victory in their bid to stay away from trouble.

Danny Ings earned Southampton a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace who had taken the lead through James Tomkins.

Palace also had a goal ruled in the first half through VAR, Max Meyer's celebrations being cut short for a marginal offside call on Wilfried Zaha.

Tottenham Hotspur can go fourth with victory at Norwich City in a later kickoff while Leicester City will try to close the gap on leaders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-relentless-liverpool-have-no-time-for-reflection-270699">Liverpool</a> to 10 points by winning at West Ham.

Premier League: Ancelotti's Everton win again, Pearson works Watford magic

Tottenham Hotspur striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-kane-keen-to-build-strong-relationship-with-mourinho-at-spurs-264993">Harry Kane</a> struck a late penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw at bottom side Norwich City, who were controversially denied a goal by a VAR review, in an entertaining <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-martial-scores-twice-as-manchester-united-crush-newcastle-270486">Premier League clash</a> on Saturday.

Kane was brought down in the area and stepped up to secure a point in his 200th Premier League match after Serge Aurier's own goal had given battling Norwich the lead for the second time.

A first-half strike by the home side's Mario Vrancic was cancelled out by Christian Eriksen's free kick after the break.

Norwich also had a Teemu Pukki effort harshly ruled out for a wafer-thin offside decision following a VAR review that left the home fans singing, "It's not football anymore."

The result leaves <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-have-the-momentum-heading-into-chelsea-clash-kane-268958">Spurs</a> in fifth place with 30 points from 20 games, two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea who have a game in hand at Arsenal on Sunday, while Norwich stay at the foot of the table with 13, six points from the safety zone.

The hosts went ahead with a low strike by Vrancic from the edge of the area in the 18th minute after Spurs defender Juan Foyth was dispossessed by Emiliano Buendia.

They thought they had scored again after 33 minutes when Pukki ran onto a ball over the top by Vrancic to slot home and while referee Kevin Friend awarded a goal, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-confirms-tottenham-appeal-against-wrong-red-for-son-269877">VAR's decision</a> was that the Finland striker was fractionally offside.

Spurs made the most of their let off with a goal 10 minutes into the second half from Eriksen who planted a free kick into the top corner after Jamal Lewis had handled outside the area.

Norwich then had some luck themselves when Tottenham's Ivorian right back Aurier diverted the ball past his own keeper Paulo Gazzaniga after team mate Toby Alderweireld hit it against him while trying to stop Pukki bearing down on goal.

"I think the same defensive mistakes we made in the first half, we made in the second half. This is being a little bit of our history," said Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho.

It was left to England forward Kane to salvage a draw for the visitors when he was brought down by Christoph Zimmermann and fired the spot kick home after 83 minutes.

It was his 136th Premier League goal - his 150th league goal in total -&nbsp;and only Alan Shearer and Sergio Aguero have scored more Premier League goals in their first 200 appearances.

Premier League: Spurs draw 2-2 at Norwich amid VAR controversy

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-martial-scores-twice-as-manchester-united-crush-newcastle-270486">Manchester United</a> climbed to fifth place in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Premier League</a> after goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford gave them a 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday which leaves them a point outside the Champions League spots.

For all the question marks over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/solskjaer-says-smiles-back-on-manchester-united-faces-ahead-of-derby-266672">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> and his side, United head into the New Year battling for a top-four place thanks in part to rivals' inconsistency but also due to the emergence of Martial and Rashford as real attacking threats.

The win also ended a run of 14 matches without a clean sheet for United and was their first away since February, although Burnley's shot-shy attack certainly made that task easier.

United's midfield was weakened by the absence of midfielder Paul Pogba, still in recovery phase and rested after two recent substitute appearances, and Scott McTominay who Solskjaer says faces up to four weeks out with a knee injury.

The Norwegian coach was forced to hand a rare start to Nemanja Matic and, despite the absentees, United had little trouble gaining the upper hand against a cautious Burnley.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-rashford-can-be-as-good-as-cristiano-ronaldo-says-solskjaer-267421">Rashford</a> forced goalkeeper Nick Pope into action with a long-range free-kick and then hit the post at the end of a swift break while Martial had a shot cleared off the line by Phil Bardsley in the 33rd minute.

The French forward got the breakthrough a minute before halftime with a simple finish after Andreas Pereira robbed defender Charlie Taylor and slipped the ball across to Martial.

Sean Dyche's Burnley side struggled to create any openings but were more positive after the break and David de Gea had to pull off a fine save in the 68th minute to keep out a low drive from Bardsley.

But after a spell of late pressure from the hosts, United wrapped up the win in stoppage time with Dan James breaking and finding Rashford, who rounded Pope and slotted home.

United end the year with back-to-back wins, following a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day and the concerns raised by Solskjaer after the recent loss at Watford seem to have had the desired impact.

"We want to get (in the top four) and we’re not far away. We did (challenge) towards the end of last season as well, we were close to the top four, but then we dropped off," he said.

“Now they’ve responded to the defeat against Watford, I put a challenge to them and they’ve put my words to shame so I’m very happy with them”.

Rashford is developing an impressive understanding with Martial and took time to praise the Frenchman, who scored twice in the win over Newcastle.

"He was brilliant again today. For a forward, there's nothing better than scoring goals. Hopefully, it keeps his confidence high and this can continue until the end of the season," he said.

Premier League: Manchester United up to fifth with 2-0 win at Burnley

Mikel Arteta has backed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-can-censor-ozil-but-cannot-hide-human-rights-violations-against-uighurs-pompeo-268791">Mesut Ozil</a> to make the most of his fresh start as Arsenal's new manager prepares for his home debut against Chelsea on Sunday.

Ozil has become a polarising figure at Arsenal after several seasons of lacklustre performances from the German playmaker.

He was a peripheral figure under former Gunners boss Unai Emery and looked destined to leave the club in January.

The 31-year-old was left out for Freddie Ljungberg's final game as interim manager against Everton after reacting angrily to being substituted in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

But Arteta restored Ozil to his starting line-up for his first match in charge as Arsenal salvaged a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">1-1 draw at Bournemouth</a> on Thursday.

Former City assistant coach Arteta, who was in the opposition dugout on December 15 when Ozil kicked his gloves having being replaced, has been encouraged by the mentality of the German World Cup winner since he took charge.

"To be fair his attitude in training since the day that I walked in the building has been incredible, and I've seen this," Arteta said.

"I said I was going to give a clean slate to everybody and it was fair as well to give it to him.

"When we did the game preparation and we were watching the opponents, and where we could hurt them, we believed that he could be a key point. And we prepared the game like this, with him.

"He responded, he did what he had to do and we could have put two or three goals because of him in the net."

Ozil antics&nbsp;

Given his previous antics, it was notable that Ozil was substituted without protest 15 minutes from full-time at Bournemouth after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had cancelled out Dan Gosling's opener.

Ozil later expressed support for the methods of his new manager, finishing a tweet with the words "Let's trust the process".

Now <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-arsenal-boss-arteta-demands-accountability-from-players-269895">Arteta</a> hopes his faith in Ozil is rewarded with a commanding display in the London derby against fourth-placed Chelsea.

Arsenal are eight points behind Chelsea in the race to qualify for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-final-16-draw-date-rules-possible-scenarios-for-english-teams-and-all-you-need-to-know-268455">Champions League</a> via a top-four finish.

A win against Frank Lampard's side would breathe a little life into Arsenal's fading bid to return to Europe's elite club competition.

And they face Chelsea at an opportune moment after the Blues slumped to a &nbsp;2-0 home defeat to Southampton on Thursday.

It was the latest tepid effort from Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, leading Lampard to again question whether his players have the quality required to break down defensive opponents.

The result was even more disappointing for Lampard as it came just days after Chelsea delivered the best performance of his reign in their 2-0 win at Tottenham.

Callum Hudson-Odoi had been called into the team to face Southampton but, not for the first time this season, the winger was underwhelming.

Lampard retains faith in the 19-year-old, who missed time this season with a heel injury.

"I thought he put in a lot of effort; he was trying things and making runs," Lampard said.

"It wasn't quite coming off for him in the first half, and overall in fact.

"He's coming off the back of a big injury and this is certainly a period where we have to stick with him through that."

And they face Chelsea at an opportune moment after the Blues slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Southampton on Thursday.

Arteta aims to solve Ozil issue as Chelsea clash looms

Liverpool's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/irresistible-liverpool-thrash-leicester-270476">resounding 4-0 win</a> at second-placed Leicester City on Boxing Day sent them 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League but Juergen Klopp's side have no time or inclination to bask in their success.

On Sunday, Liverpool are back in action against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield before another tricky home game against Sheffield United on Thursday.

Wolves are a team capable of upsetting anyone in the league but there was nothing in the impressive swatting aside of Leicester that suggests Liverpool are about to stumble.

They have the joint biggest lead in top-flight history at this stage of the campaign and no team has ever failed to win the title with an advantage of this size.

Already there is talk of Liverpool going through the league entire season unbeaten - matching the 'The Invincibles' of Arsenal in 2003/04 and Preston North End in 1888/89.

It may be predictable but Klopp is surely wise to avoid such discussions, especially as his club have never won the Premier League and are without a domestic league title for 30 years.

"I can write the stories myself: the first story is that never before in the history of football, British football at least, has a team had a bigger lead and lost the lead," said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-klopp-says-hectic-christmas-schedule-is-a-crime-270337">Klopp</a>.

"So that sounds in my ear negative, so why should we think about something like that? We are just focused on the next (games).

"We play Wolves, Sheffield United, Everton (in the FA Cup third round), Tottenham and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-martial-scores-twice-as-manchester-united-crush-newcastle-270486">Manchester United</a> in the next five games. That doesn’t sound like anything is decided in my ears, to be honest," he said.

Closest battles&nbsp;

Barring an unlikely Liverpool collapse, the closest battles this season are going to be for the top four places and at the bottom of the table.

Chelsea need&nbsp;to quickly sort out their form -&nbsp;they have lost five of their last seven league games - and on Sunday they make the short trip across London to face Arsenal in Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge.

Chelsea have been better away from Stamford Bridge this season, with six wins in nine, but the Gunners, down in 11th place, sorely need to kick-start their season if they are to have any chance of European football next term.

Leicester have suffered successive defeats, to Manchester City and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-end-sensational-year-as-roberto-firminos-extra-time-goal-seals-club-world-cup-269525">Liverpool</a>, and will be anxious to keep their Champions League push on track with a win at struggling West Ham United.

Manchester City, who are at Wolves later on Friday, host surprise package, promoted Sheffield United who are in sixth place, on Sunday.

Manchester United, fresh from hammering Newcastle United 4-1 on Boxing Day, have a short trip to Burnley, while Spurs are away to bottom club Norwich City.

Liverpool's resounding 4-0 win at second-placed Leicester City on Boxing Day sent them 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League but Juergen Klopp's side have no time or inclination to bask in their success.

Football: Relentless Liverpool have no time for reflection

Pep Guardiola admitted <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-resilient-chelsea-bounce-back-to-beat-manchester-city-2-1-267121">Manchester City's </a>faint hopes of retaining the Premier League title were in tatters as they blew a two-goal lead and had Ederson sent in a dramatic 3-2 defeat at Wolves on Friday.

Guardiola's side recovered from Ederson's 12th minute dismissal to take control thanks to Raheem Sterling's double either side of half-time.

But City's fatigued stars were unable to go the distance as Adama Traore's goal started a thrilling Wolves fightback.

Raul Jimenez equalised with eight minutes to go and Matt Doherty hit the winner to send Molineux wild in the 89th minute.

"Always the goals can be avoided but sometimes it's tiredness. It's a lot of minutes to defend with 10 men," Guardiola said.

"No regrets, they did absolutely everything to defend a result for 80 minutes but it was difficult."

Third-placed City trail runaway leaders Liverpool by 14 points and, Jurgen Klopp's red-hot team have a game in hand, making it hard to imagine the champions getting their hands on the trophy for a third successive season.&nbsp;

"It is a big gap for a long time. It's not a race if you think about it," Guardiola said.&nbsp;

"I have been asked the question for a long time and it is the same answer. It's not realistic to think about the title race.

"We have to think of the next game and about winning our games."

Wolves, flying high in fifth place, have contributed to City's downfall more than most and, after winning 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in October, they celebrated a top-flight double over the Manchester club for the first time since 1960-61.

The only blemish for Wolves were the missiles thrown from the stands when City celebrated their second goal, an incident that prompted the Football Association to launch an investigation.

Referee Martin Atkinson was seen passing a metal hip flask to the fourth official as an announcement over the tannoy warned "numerous instances of objects being thrown have been seen. CCTV will be used to prosecute offenders".&nbsp;

It was a bitter night for Guardiola, whose team have lost five league games this season after being beaten just four times in the whole of last term.&nbsp;

City had looked closer to their best in recent wins over Arsenal and Leicester, but they could not have made a worse start at Molineux.

When Diogo Jota escaped with a well-timed run behind the City defence, Ederson rashly raced out of his area.

The Brazilian misjudged the bounce of the ball and clipped Jota, earning a red card. Guardiola then replaced Sergio Aguero with reserve keeper Claudio Bravo.

City responded by snatching the lead in controversial fashion in the 25th minute.

Riyad Mahrez made an incisive run that ended with Leander Dendoncker stepping on the Algerian's foot, leading VAR to award a penalty.

That was not the end of the drama as Sterling's spot-kick was saved by Rui Patricio, only for VAR to intervene again as the penalty was retaken for encroachment.

Relentless pressure&nbsp;

Sterling shot to the same side with his second kick, but although Patricio saved again, this time the winger followed up to tap in the rebound.

When Sterling doubled the lead in the 50th minute, City looked in charge.

Beating the offside trap with ease, Sterling ran onto Kevin De Bruyne's pass and clipped a deft finish over Patricio.

But Sterling's eventful night wasn't finished yet and, when he surrendered possession careless in midfield five minutes later, Wolves took advantage to reduce the deficit.

Traore's blistering pace makes him a tough opponent, so City backed off just enough to allow the wing-back to blast a low drive past Bravo from 20 yards.

Wolves' relentless pressure in the closing stages finally forced City to crack.

Benjamin Mendy made a mess of trying to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick and Traore stole possession.

Traore crossed for Jimenez to stab past Bravo from close-range, leaving City's exhausted players on their knees in frustration.

There was even worse to come for City in the 89th minute as Doherty took Jimenez's backheel, slalomed past Nicolas Otamendi and smashed a fine finish into the far corner.

Manchester City's title bid fades after stunning loss against Wolves

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said on Monday that he was planning to stay with the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Premier League</a> club next season amid talk that he would leave the champions at the end of the current campaign.

The Spaniard, who has never managed a club for more than four years, denied reports earlier this month that his contract until 2021 contained a 'break clause' that could allow him to leave at the end of the season.

City's hopes of a third successive league title look slim with Guardiola's side trailing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-end-sensational-year-as-roberto-firminos-extra-time-goal-seals-club-world-cup-269525">Liverpool</a> by 11 points and the 48-year-old said his future at the club was not entirely down to him.

"This is my fourth season, next season will be the fifth because I try to stay next season. It is a long time," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Friday's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"I am incredibly good here. I have to see if I deserve a new contract. The level has increased a lot and expectations are higher and we have to see if we can handle it. It is not just up to me.

"Now we have a break with the family and prepare (for) Wolves and the rest. We have time to think about it in the future."

City face Wolves who are sixth in the standings and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-guardiola-takes-dig-at-premier-league-says-thank-you-for-busy-festive-season-269649">Guardiola</a> praised their manager Nuno Espirito Santo who has overseen only one loss in their last 13 league matches.

"Wolves is always one of the toughest opponents," Guardiola said. "What Nuno is doing is incredible. It is one of the toughest games and at home they are incredibly organised with pace up front.

"Hopefully we can maintain the level of the last weeks and last games."

Guardiola's also touched upon his long-time assistant manager Mikel Arteta, who replaced Unai Emery as manager at Arsenal last week.

"He's now Arsenal manager," Guardiola added. "We prepared the Leicester game without him and tried to work the way we have the last years. We will work a little bit harder, that's all."

Guardiola confirmed midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was not injured after he hobbled off with a cramp during Saturday's win over Leicester City but David Silva, Sergio Aguero and John Stones remain sidelined.

Champions League Final 16 Draw: Date, rules, possible scenarios for English teams and all you need to know

Soccer's rule-making body IFAB is to look at ways of providing more information during matches about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/english-premier-league-promises-to-improve-and-speed-up-var-use-262258">Video Assistant Referee</a> (VAR) decisions, it said following a meeting on Tuesday.

The use of VAR, match officials who use technology to review certain decisions made by the referee, has been surrounded by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/var-system-has-made-four-errors-in-premier-league-referees-chief-249386">controversy</a> over the last few months.

Some fans say the system goes far beyond its original remit, which involved only reviewing the most glaring mistakes,&nbsp;and that decisions are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/copa-america-organisers-satisfied-with-use-of-var-despite-lengthy-delays-230565">taking too long</a>.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) said in a statement that its members had agreed to "explore different communication options to improve the understanding of the decision-making process".

It recognised that there was a "growing demand for more immediate information about the referee’s final decisions after a VAR-review."

In some leagues where VAR is used, screens in the stadium indicate that a VAR review is taking place and then relay the decision but with only minimal information such as "No goal".

There have been several cases where a goal has been officially announced in the stadium, the players have celebrated and the ball is back in the centre circle ready for kickoff only for a VAR review to take place.

Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti complained recently that it was often difficult to know whether the VAR or the pitch referee was in charge of a match.

IFAB said the meeting received "positive feedback" on the changes to the laws, including a handball rule, which were introduced in June, even though, like VAR, this has been subject to much criticism.

It also agreed to set up an "expert group" to look into whether the rules need to be changed to allow for better treatment for players who suffer concussion.

The group will look a new ways of assessing concussion during a match and how to deal with it, "taking into consideration all potential resulting consequences, with player safety at the forefront".

At present, referees must stop the match in cases of suspected concussion to allow the examination of the injured player who can only return to the game with permission from the team doctor.

However, world players' union FIFPro says this does not go far enough. It wants players to be looked at by a neutral doctor and temporary substitutions to be allowed for up to 10 minutes while the examination takes place.

IFAB's annual general meeting on February&nbsp;29 will decide which proposals will be incorporated into the rules.

Soccer's rule-making body IFAB is to look at ways of providing more information during matches about Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions, it said following a meeting on Tuesday. The use of VAR, match officials who use technology to review certain decisions made by the referee, has been surrounded by controversy over the last few months. Some fans say the system goes far beyond its original remit, which involved only reviewing the most glaring mistakes, and that decisions are taking too long. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) said in a statement that its members had agreed to "explore different communication options to improve the understanding of the decision-making process". It recognised that there was a "growing demand for more immediate information about the referee’s final decisions after a VAR-review." In some leagues where VAR is used, screens in the stadium indicate that a VAR review is taking place and then relay the decision but with only minimal information such as "No goal". Football: Rule-makers look at ways of providing more information about VAR decisions

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered another frustrating afternoon as his team were held to a 2-2 draw at home to lowly Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered another frustrating afternoon as his team were held to a 2-2 draw at home to lowly Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday. United came back through an own goal and a Victor Lindelof header to lead after falling behind to an 11th-minute Jack Grealish goal but had to settle for a point that leaves them in ninth place, 22 points adrift of Liverpool after 14 games. The club have won just 18 points in the Premier League this season, their fewest after 14 games of a top-flight campaign since 1988-89. Solskjaer's side now face two big tests with their former manager Jose Mourinho returning with Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday before the Manchester derby at the Etihad on Saturday. "First half today wasn't good enough, their first goal knocked us emotionally, we didn't compete until halftime," said Solskjaer. "As a club we don't like to be in this position but that's the reality. Wednesday we have a big game, Saturday, these boys are looking forward to every game," he added. United fans will be far from confident of positive results in those games after another poor display from a team lacking authority and quality in midfield against a Villa side inspired by the creativity of Grealish. After a wide-open start to the game, Grealish fired Villa ahead, cutting in from the left and expertly curling the ball into the far, top corner. Villa substitute Trezeguet had the ball in the net in the 29th minute but his effort was ruled out for offside and three minutes before the break United got a barely deserved equaliser. A short corner led to Andreas Pereira floating in a deep cross which Marcus Rashford rose well to head against the post with the ball bouncing in off helpless Villa keeper Tom Heaton in the 42nd minute. Ambitious Villa Villa continued to play with ambition after the break and Grealish could have added a second goal but his outstretched foot turned a Trezeguet ball just wide of the post. It was another corner routine which led to United taking the lead after 64 minutes; this time Fred's cross was inadvertently headed to the back post by Villa striker Wesley and United's Swedish defender Lindelof nodded home. The lead last only two minutes before Villa got back on level terms, the impressive Matt Targett chipping the ball into the box to an unmarked Tyrone Mings who volleyed home. While the defender looked offside VAR ruled that it was valid, giving the centre-half his first Premier League goal. United pushed forward in response but lacked the finesse to open up the Villa defence and their skipper Harry Maguire admitted the performance had not been good enough. "As a team we are improving but we want to improve a lot more. To not win games at home is disappointing," he said. "We huffed and puffed but we need to do better and Wednesday (against Spurs) gives us a great opportunity to put that right. "We were poor after their first goal. It knocked us and we were edgy and nervous. To concede straight away after going in front, it's disappointing," added the England international. Villa boss Dean Smith hailed Grealish's performance, saying "everything that was good from us came through him", though he added that the midfielder would find it hard to forget his missed chance. "He knows more than anybody that nine times out of 10 he scores that. He'll be pleased because of his goal but he won't sleep because of that miss," he said.

More frustration for Solskjaer as Manchester United held by Villa

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arsenals-under-fire-emery-gets-clubs-public-backing-261544">Unai Emery </a>is fighting for his future at Arsenal while Everton boss Marco Silva and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini are running out of time.

Emery is the bookies' favourite to be the third Premier League manager to lose his job this season after the dismissals of Watford's Javi Gracia and Mauricio Pochettino by Spurs.

His future looked even bleaker on Thursday with a 2-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.

Everton, according to reports, have held board-level discussions about Silva's position while Pellegrini has gone two months without a win in any competition for his misfiring Hammers.

AFP Sport looks at the three managers fighting for their lives in the Premier League this weekend.

Emery stumbles

Unai Emery was supposed to be the man to take Arsenal back to the top of the English game after years of underachievement under Arsene Wenger.

But the former Paris Saint-German manager is teetering on the brink after five Premier League matches without a win -- Arsenal are the only side in the top half of the table with a negative goal difference.

His future became even more uncertain on Thursday when they squandered a one-goal lead to lose to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, a result greeted by deafening boos around a sparsely-attended Emirates Stadium.

Having not won in any competition in seven games, it's Arsenal's worst run since 1992.

Emery, 48, was publicly backed by Arsenal's hierarchy during the international break as rivals Tottenham replaced Pochettino with Jose Mourinho.

"Now our moment is not good. We need to win, take confidence and I think we are better than we are showing. The players, the coaches and myself," the Spaniard said after Thursday's defeat.

"My work and my job is firstly analysing the match, how we are in the Europa League, how we are going to play on Sunday."

One positive for Arsenal, who could move up to fifth place if results go their way this weekend, is that they have lost just once in their past 15 visits to Norwich in all competitions.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is favourite to replace Emery at the Emirates Stadium but this week refused to discuss any links with the club, saying it would be "disrespectful".

Everton search for Silva lining

Marco Silva's Everton are just two places above the relegation zone with seven defeats from their opening 13 Premier League fixtures -- and they have a hideous run of matches coming up starting with a visit to Leicester on Sunday.

Everton splashed the cash in the close season, recruiting Fabian Delph from Manchester City, Alex Iwobi from Arsenal and Moise Kean from Juventus, but they have struggled, scoring just 13 goals all season.

There have even been suggestions of a possible return to Goodison Park for former boss David Moyes.

Former Everton player Michael Ball tweeted this week that there was no way back for 42-year-old Silva, with games to come in the next few weeks against Liverpool, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs.

"Silva knows he's going, Players do, the fans do," he wrote.

"Yes it's difficult to bring someone in with that nightmare run of games but the fans need hope. Players need a fresh start &amp; ideas to give us a slight chance to pick up points."

Pellegrini's Chelsea test

Manuel Pellegrini's side have not won in any competition since September and have plummeted down the Premier League table after a bright start.

The fourth-bottom Hammers face a challenging test this weekend against in-form Chelsea. Frank Lampard's young side have won six of their past seven league matches.

"We don't talk about that," the 66-year-old former Manchester City boss said on Thursday when questioned about his future. "You have to very clear what you must do, game by game.

"Football changes all the time. We are working to try to beat Chelsea and after that, we will see the result."

Goalkeeper Roberto has taken much of the flak for West Ham's poor run and was at fault again during last week's 3-2 home defeat by Tottenham.

Regular keeper Lukasz Fabianski is still injured, but Pellegrini gave no guarantee that he will keep faith with Roberto, meaning third-choice keeper David Martin might be pressed into action.
