Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane hopes the club's winning start under <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">new manager Jose Mourinho</a> can help forge a strong relationship between the pair and lead to trophies.

Mourinho's first home game as Spurs boss suffered a shocking start, ending happily, though, as Kane scored a brace that helped his team come from behind to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-mourinho-masterstroke-pays-off-as-tottenham-spurs-hit-back-to-win-264816">beat Olympiakos</a> Piraeus 4-2 and reach the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

That win came after a 3-2 Premier League <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">victory at West Ham</a> United in the Portuguese manager's first match in charge following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino last week.

"When you are winning, it definitely helps your relationship. Hopefully we can build a strong relationship," Kane told the British media.

"It's early days. We have a good relationship so far. We talk, we try and help the team ... Me being one of the leaders in the team he looks to me for feelings and advice on the team."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-aiming-to-take-spurs-and-kane-to-the-next-level-263998">Kane</a> previously said Tottenham had found a "proven winner" in Mourinho as they bid to end an 11-year title drought.

The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss has claimed 25 major honours, but that record will be put to the test at Spurs, who have not won a title since the 2008 League Cup.

"We know we both want to win big competitions. That's the team's aim, my aim and the manager's aim. Hopefully I can help him do that this year and see where we can go," Kane said.

"He's had two games. So far it's been about trying to save energy, not trying to work too much with the players because of the games.

"But we obviously have a long season ahead so I'm sure we will get to know each other well over the next few weeks and implement what he wants on our team."

Manchester City owner to sell $500 million stake valuing itself at $4.8 billion: Report

Sadio Mane has, in the words of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a> teammate Andy Robertson, "taken his game to another level", stepping out of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mohamed-salah-brushes-off-rumours-related-to-rift-with-sadio-mane-249578">Mohamed Salah</a>'s shadow to become arguably the main man at Anfield.

The Senegal international shares star billing with Salah and Roberto Firmino as part of the European champions' electrifying and fluid front three.

But this year Mane is leading Liverpool's charge,&nbsp;his goal at Selhurst Park at the weekend was his 12th of the campaign and his 29th for the club in the calendar year.

Mane frightens defences with his pace, direct running and skill and his goal return has eased the burden on the shoulders of Salah.

Liverpool defender Robertson praised Mane after his goal in the 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace, which kept Liverpool eight points clear of second-placed Leicester in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-denied-comeback-win-by-late-mcburnie-equaliser-264347">Premier League</a>.

On Wednesday he will train his sights on Napoli in the Champions League, with a win guaranteeing Liverpool top spot in the group.

"He has been fantastic," said Robertson. "Even when I came he was amazing but maybe did not have as much composure as he does now in front of goal.

"Now, every time he's in front of goal you don't think he'll miss. The one he had at the start of the second half (of the Palace game), we were surprised he didn't score and that is the type of player he is. You expect him to score and that is a good thing and he's popped up with another crucial goal."

"The others are pitching in as well but it's been a fantastic year for him and he's taken his game to another level," Robertson added.

Mane joined Liverpool in 2016, a year before Salah, but the Egyptian quickly became the alpha male at Anfield, scoring 44 goals in all competitions in a remarkable debut season in 2017/18.

Last season the two players shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the three forwards all scoring 22 goals.

And Salah has pipped his teammate to the African player of the year award over the past two seasons.&nbsp;

Both have been shortlisted again for this year's prize and Mane, who reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal this year, is seen as an outsider to win the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-dominates-ballon-dor-shortlist-with-seven-names-257421">Ballon d'Or</a>.

Mane has talked about how lucky he is to play alongside his two attacking comrades-in-arms.

"Every single player who plays alongside them would enjoy it because they are very good players and they make everything easy, so I just enjoy playing alongside them," he told the official Liverpool magazine.

Despite those warm words, there was a rare display of emotion from the 27-year-old earlier this season when he was substituted at Burnley, furious that Salah had not passed to him when he was in a better position.

It led to suggestions that all was not harmonious between the pair, but Mane was quick to correct any impression of an underlying problem.

"It can happen, he didn't see me and I was frustrated. We are really good friends," he said.

A 176-second hat-trick for Southampton in 2015 catapulted Mane to worldwide attention.

He joined Liverpool the following year for £34 million ($44 million) and was voted the club's player of the year in his debut season.

Last year the Senegalese signed a new deal committing him to the club until 2023.

At the time <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/klopp-praises-liverpool-intensity-after-crucial-win-over-city-261303">Klopp</a> called him the "complete" attacking player and said he had improved season by season.

"The only criticism I could ever have of Sadio is that maybe at times he is the only one not to see just how good he is," said the Liverpool boss.&nbsp;

The question harassed defenders will be asking themselves is just how good he will be when he starts fully believing in himself.

Football: Mane the main man as Liverpool close on Champions League knockouts

Jose Mourinho promised "real passion" following his appointment as Tottenham Hotspur boss on Wednesday after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by the struggling Premier League club.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">announced as the new boss</a> at White Hart Lane hours after the Argentine was dismissed on Tuesday evening.

"I couldn't be happier and look forward to the challenge," Mourinho told Tottenham's official website.&nbsp;

"What can I promise? Passion, real passion. Passion for my job, but also passion for my club, that's the way I have been all my career."

The 56-year-old, who had been out of work since leaving United last December, signed a contract until the end of the 2022-23 season after Spurs acted to halt their slide down the table.

The club <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-spurs-close-in-on-last-16-berth-with-4-0-rout-of-red-star-260412">reached the Champions League</a> final last season but are languishing in 14th spot in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-fa-overturn-spurs-striker-sons-red-card-for-tackle-on-evertons-gomes-260237">Premier League</a> after picking up just three wins from 12 games. They are 11 points off the top four positions which allow qualification to European club football's top competition.

"I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club," added the new manager, who has won domestic league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

Mourinho was due to take training on Wednesday before his first press conference on Thursday. His first game in charge is at West Ham on Saturday.

His glittering CV includes Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan.

He also won three Premier League titles over two spells in charge of Chelsea, and returned to England to manage Manchester United in 2016, where he won the Europa League and the League Cup.

"In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football," said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. "He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

"He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room."

Mourinho was sacked by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-sponsorships-march-on-despite-on-field-slip-ups-263140">United</a> last December and has been without a club since, most recently working as a TV pundit.

Despite his troubles in the latter stages of his tenure at Old Trafford he remains a big name but is a divisive figure and there will be questions over whether his pragmatic style can mesh with Tottenham's tradition of attacking football.

Pochettino had transformed Spurs' fortunes since arriving in 2014, qualifying for the Champions League four times.

Although he failed to win a trophy, Tottenham made a dramatic run to the European Cup final for the first time in their history in June, losing 2-0 to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a> in Madrid.

But that masked a worrying dip in domestic form in the second half of last season and Pochettino was unable to reverse the slide in this campaign.

They were also bundled out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Colchester United and suffered an embarrassing 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told the BBC that poor results had forced the club's hand.

"The same voice after six years starts to wear a little thin, a new man can find another 10 per cent, they will find a spring in their step for Jose's first game," he said.

Mourinho has a tough task on his hands. No team with as low a tally as Spurs have after 12 games, 14 points, has ever gone on to record a top-four finish.

Pochettino, operating on a tight budget in comparison with his rivals, nurtured a squad of young players to become household names including Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.

A series of Spurs players paid warm tribute to their departing manager.

Tottenham and England forward Kane tweeted: "Gaffer. I'll be forever thankful to you for helping me achieve my dreams."&nbsp;

South Korean forward Son Heung-min said in an Instagram post that "words are powerless to express my gratitude".

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust released a statement expressing "concerns" and seeking clarity over how the new boss and the board would work together.

The group asked: "Is the manager solely accountable? How much has the board's line on wages and transfers contributed to player unrest and disaffection?"

England's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a> has promised to improve and speed up the use of the VAR system following several controversial decisions and widespread criticism from fans and pundits.

The Premier League, using the technology for the first time this season, said in a statement that VAR was discussed at length during a shareholders meeting on Thursday and Mike Riley, its chief referee, accepted that "improvement is required".

"The Premier League and PGMOL (match officials) committed to improving the consistency of decisions, speeding up processes and increasing communication to fans," it said.

Riley told clubs that speed and consistency of decision-making "are priority areas of work and will improve as the officials become more experienced with the technology and protocols".

More information will be provided to fans, such as explaining why an incident was being looked at, Riley said.

"Ensuring the pace and tempo of Premier League football remains an important focus for clubs," the statement added.

"The core principles of VAR were reiterated. These are minimum interference for maximum benefit, maintaining the pace and tempo of Premier League football and correcting clear and obvious on-field errors."

Unlike other leagues which use VAR, such as Serie A and the Bundesliga, Premier League referees do not routinely view incidents on the pitchside monitor and this is to remained unchanged.

"It was reemphasised that it would be reserved for unseen incidents, or when information from the VAR is outside the expectation range of the referee," said the statement.

Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow told reporters there was a "very robust discussion".

"Messages to through to the league and the referees' association that fans are unhappy and many other stakeholders think we have got to do a whole lot better," he said.

Egypt's Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been ruled out of their African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya and Comoros with an ankle injury.

Egypt released a statement on their official Twitter account on Tuesday confirming Salah will miss the games, along with a picture of the striker with a protective boot on his left ankle.

Egypt host Kenya in their opening Group G qualifying match on Thursday and visit Comoros on Monday.

Salah has scored six goals for Liverpool this season and was on target in Sunday's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">3-1 win over Manchester City</a> which took his side eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

But the 27-year-old has had niggling injuries since twisting his ankle against Leicester City at the start of October, which forced him to miss the 1-1 draw at Manchester United, the only Premier League game Liverpool have failed to win this season.

Salah has been unable to complete 90 minutes in the league since hurting his ankle against Leicester, being <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mohamed-salah-fires-liverpool-to-comeback-win-over-spurs-258415">substituted against Tottenham Hotspur</a>, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says he feels no extra pressure to deliver the team's first Club World Cup title next month but expects an intense tournament in Qatar amidst a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-liverpools-klopp-unsure-how-he-will-approach-two-games-in-24-hours-260260">busy run of fixtures</a> across all competitions.

Liverpool enter the tournament at the semi-final stage and face a second-round winner on December&nbsp;18 and the German believes the European champions could be pushed hard by unfamiliar opponents in the seven-team competition.

"I'm not someone who has to be the first on the moon or the first winning the World Cup with Liverpool, but when we're there we'll try with all we have," Klopp told the FIFA website.

"So far, I don't feel any pressure. I see it as an absolute opportunity... the interesting and difficult part is that we'll be playing against teams from other continents, which doesn't happen that often... it'll be a tough one for sure."

The teams involved in the December&nbsp;11-21 tournament are CONCACAF champions Monterrey of Mexico; Qatar champions Al Sadd; Oceania title holders Hienghene Sport of New Caledonia; African champions Esperance of Tunisia; the eventual South American champions and the Asian Champions League winners.

"We'll prepare for it as we would usually and we'll see if it's right or wrong... I don't get to see a lot of Brazilian, Argentinian, Mexican or Arabic football... so I don't know too much about them... It'll be really intense," added Klopp.

Liverpool outclassed Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final in June to claim their sixth European Cup and followed that by beating Europa League winners Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to lift the UEFA Super Cup.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says he feels no extra pressure to deliver the team's first Club World Cup title next month but expects an intense tournament in Qatar amidst a busy run of fixtures across all competitions. Liverpool enter the tournament at the semi-final stage and face a second-round winner on December 18 and the German believes the European champions could be pushed hard by unfamiliar opponents in the seven-team competition. "I'm not someone who has to be the first on the moon or the first winning the World Cup with Liverpool, but when we're there we'll try with all we have," Klopp told the FIFA website. "So far, I don't feel any pressure. I see it as an absolute opportunity... the interesting and difficult part is that we'll be playing against teams from other continents, which doesn't happen that often... it'll be a tough one for sure." The teams involved in the December 11-21 tournament are CONCACAF champions Monterrey of Mexico; Qatar champions Al Sadd; Oceania title holders Hienghene Sport of New Caledonia; African champions Esperance of Tunisia; the eventual South American champions and the Asian Champions League winners. Football: No pressure to land Club World Cup crown, says Liverpool's Klopp

Liverpool opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League with an emphatic and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-do-not-want-to-lose-league-title-to-man-city-again-alisson-261026">hugely impressive 3-1</a> win over defending champions Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

The victory, sealed with goals from Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, leaves unbeaten Liverpool on 34 points from 12 games, eight ahead of Leicester City and Chelsea, and nine in front of Pep Guardiola's fourth-placed City.

While talk of decisive results in November, with 26 games of the campaign remaining, is premature, the manner of Liverpool's win over a team which has dominated the league for the past two seasons was certainly a declaration of intent.

"The boys were completely focused and concentrated. It was so good," Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp said.

Anfield exploded when Liverpool grabbed a sixth-minute lead with a thundering drive from Brazilian Fabinho, who pounced on a poor clearance from Ilkay Gundogan and blasted past Claudio Bravo from over 20 metres out.

Yet City felt the stunning effort should have been ruled out -- and a penalty awarded to them -- as prior to the break that led to the goal Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to handle the ball inside the box but the VAR review went against the visitors.

It was the latest VAR controversy in the Premier League and is certain to spark more debate, but while the opening goal set the tone, Liverpool's dominance was soon evident all across the field.

City pushed forward in response and Raheem Sterling missed a close-range header, but Liverpool struck again in the 13th minute when Andy Robertson crossed from the left and Salah nodded the bouncing ball past Bravo to make it 2-0.

Juergen Klopp's European champions, without a domestic league title since 1990, now had a firm grip on the game and caused constant trouble for City's shaky defence with their powerful surges forward.

Liverpool were on top physically and their pressing stopped City from establishing their usual possession game but still they managed to carve out some openings.

Sergio Aguero, who had a disappointing game, forced Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker into action in the 25th minute and then the Argentine should have done better three minutes before the break when he shot wide after being fed by Kevin De Bruyne.

Guardiola needed to adjust something at the break to find a foothold in the game but City's third defeat of the season, after losses to Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, was assured when Liverpool made it 3-0 six minutes after the interval.

Jordan Henderson superbly worked space on the right flank and whipped in a cross which Mane dived to head home at the back post.

Bernardo Silva pulled a goal back for City in the 78th minute, drilling home a low cross from Angelino and the visitors enjoyed some late pressure but it was too late for a comeback from the champions.

City have not won at Anfield in the league since May, 2003 -&nbsp;their only win at Liverpool in 38 years, but manager Pep Guardiola took positives from Sunday's performance.

"It's not easy after being two goals down to react the way we reacted. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen from my team. That's what we needed and hopefully we can continue to make the steps we need," he said.

EPL: Liverpool masterclass leaves Manchester City in tatters

Cenk Tosun's header eight minutes into stoppage time salvaged a 1-1 draw for Everton against Tottenham in a match overshadowed by a broken ankle suffered by Everton midfielder Andre Gomes.

Spurs' Son Heung-min was shown a straight red card for his foul on the Portuguese international, but the injury occurred as Gomes's momentum saw him crash into Serge Aurier.

"It is a bad moment for us as a group and as a team. It's more than a football game, this is the most important thing right now," said Everton manager Marco Silva.

Tottenham led 1-0 at that stage thanks to Dele Alli's strike just after the hour mark.

The injury to Gomes proved a turning point with Son visibly upset even before he was shown a red card.

"He (Son) is devastated and in tears," said Alli. "It's not his fault. Son is one of the nicest people you've ever met. He can't even lift his head up, he's crying so much."

Later Sunday, Everton confirmed the 26-year-old former Barcelona star Gomes had broken his right ankle and will undergo surgery on Monday.

"Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes will undergo surgery after sustaining an ankle injury in today's game with Tottenham Hotspur," the Merseysiders said in a statement.

"After undergoing hospital tests, it was confirmed he had suffered a fracture-dislocation to his right ankle. The club will provide further updates in due course."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said&nbsp;his club had the utmost sympathy for Gomes.

"We feel very sorry," he said. "Was a really bad situation, very bad luck how he landed in the action.

"We can only send our best wishes and (we are) devastated for the situation."

However,&nbsp;Pochettino believed the red card shown to Son was harsh, particularly as referee Martin Atkinson had first produced a yellow card prior to seeing Gomes's injury.

"I cannot agree with the red card of Sonny," added&nbsp;Pochettino.

"VAR must help the referee, I don't know what is going on and what happens with this tool. Rather than help the referee it is creating more confusion."

Both managers were left frustrated at the use of VAR as both sides saw a strong penalty claim turned down in the second half despite a lengthy delay to review the incidents.

Poor starts&nbsp;

First Tottenham was denied as Son was upended by Yerry Mina with the score at 0-0 and then, after Alli opened the scoring, the England midfielder escaped unpunished from a handball inside his own box.

"I think the referee needs to go to the screen and check like in other leagues. It's the referee that needs to take the decision not the VAR from I don't know where," said&nbsp;Pochettino.

A point does little to improve a poor start to the season for either side with Everton still hovering just one place above the relegation zone, while Spurs remain in the bottom half in 11th with 13 points from their first 11 games.

Tottenham hit the Toffees for six on their last visit to Goodison Park last December, but their fall off in form over the past year was in evidence in a dismal first 45 minutes in which neither side threatened to open the scoring.

Spurs badly missed the absent Harry Kane through illness but were gifted the opener when Alex Iwobi handed possession to Son and the South Korean fed Alli to fire past England international teammate Jordan Pickford.

Son's joy soon turned to anguish when he slid on Gomes 12 minutes from time as he had to be consoled by players from both sides when he saw the extent of Gomes's injury.

Everton still struggled to make their man advantage count in what proved to be the final 24 minutes with 12 minutes added due to the VAR reviews and medical attention for Gomes.

But Tosun was in the right place to power home an equaliser and deny Tottenham a first away win in the Premier League since January.

David Silva to leave Manchester City at end of next season

Chelsea have appointed their former goalkeeper Petr Cech as technical and performance advisor, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

Cech spent 11 years as a player at Chelsea, winning 13 major trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League, before moving to their London rivals Arsenal in 2015.

In his new role, the 37-year-old will work closely with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia and the first-team coaching staff and travel with the team to away games, the club said in a statement.

Manchester United must take "smart" decisions when signing new players during the close season and nurture their youth players so they can compete in the Premier League next season, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

Defender Luke Shaw was named the club's player of the year but the English left-back said he would trade the award for a successful season with the team.

Pep Guardiola's men edge one point ahead of Liverpool once more with four games of a titanic title race left for both sides.

For all their Champions League heroics to get to the semi-finals this season, Tottenham still have much to do to qualify for the competition next season as they could easily end the Easter weekend outside the top four should Arsenal and Chelsea beat Crystal Palace and Burnley at home respectively.

City's quest for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies was ended by defeat on away goals to Spurs on Wednesday, despite winning a thrilling quarter-final, second leg 4-3.

However, they remain on course for a first ever treble of domestic trophies in England as they survived a nervy finale thanks to another blistering start.

City have made a habit of firing out of the blocks this season and just like in midweek to kickstart a kamikaze encounter, they struck within five minutes.
Foden was making just his second Premier League start and immediately justified Guardiola's faith in the 19-year-old by heading home Sergio Aguero's nodded pass across goal from Bernardo Silva's cross.

However, history could easily have repeated itself as after four goals were shared in the opening 11 minutes on Wednesday, Spurs had numerous chances to strike back.

Son Heung-min had already forced Ederson in a smart save from a narrow angle before City scored and the Brazilian goalkeeper had to rush from his goal once more to deny Christian Eriksen an equaliser on 15 minutes.

Two minutes later the Dane played provider with a glorious ball to free Son in behind the City defence.

However, the South Korean, who scored twice in midweek to end City's European dreams for another season, was caught up just in time by Aymeric Laporte, who made a perfectly timed last-ditch tackle.

Despite Tottenham's chances on the break, it was the hosts who were still dominating territory and possession with Bernardo Silva a constant threat.

The Portuguese's outstanding season was rewarded as he was named alongside teammates Aguero and Raheem Sterling in the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award and Jan Vertonghen was fortunate to escape without conceding a penalty when he appeared to trip Silva inside the area.

Spurs were without captain Hugo Lloris through injury and his understudy Paulo Gazzaniga looked nervous early on, but the Argentine goalkeeper got down to save Silva's next effort.

Guardiola's decision to leave Kevin de Bruyne out for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final between the sides was doubly questioned after the Belgian bagged a brilliant hat-trick of assists in midweek.

However, Guardiola's reasoning for being cautious with his playmaker after an injury-plagued season was understandable as De Bruyne limped off again just before the break and may well now miss the rest of the campaign.

Both sides suffered from their midweek exertions and the blazing sun as the second-half meandered along at a much more subdued pace.

Spurs had a big penalty appeal of their own turned down when Kyle Walker handled inside the area against his former club.

Sterling briefly thought he had completed a hat-trick in stoppage time on Wednesday with the goal that would have sent City through to the Champions League last four until VAR ruled the goal out for offside.

And the England international could not believe his misfortune once more when Gazzaniga stuck out an outstretched leg to prevent Sterling sealing a vital three points from Leroy Sane's cut-back.

Instead, City had to suffer through the closing stages knowing one mistake could cost them the title.

Manchester City exacted some measure of revenge on Tottenham for their Champions League exit as Phil Foden's first Premier League goal earned a 1-0 win to move them back top of the table on Saturday. But they held on as Spurs suffered an eighth straight away defeat to English opposition.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said after their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday that there are "500,000 different ways to win a football game" - and emerging victorious after a 90th-minute winner, even an own goal, is a sweet way to do it.

The Anfield crowd went wild, the German coach was fist-pumping in front of the Kop, Liverpool players hugged each other in delight and beneath it, all was a deep sense of relief as they claimed another three vital Premier League points.

Had the score remained 1-1 the impetus in the title race would have been handed to Manchester City but a bit of luck, as the ball rolled over the line off Toby Alderweireld's shins, meant Liverpool ended the weekend on top and on a high.

For Klopp that kind of victory is psychologically even more of a boost then a comfortable win.

"One hundred per cent, of course. If you win today 5-0 - I didn’t see that as possible, but if - then it can lead you on the wrong path, that’s how it is. We are all human beings," he said.

Liverpool have 79 points with Manchester City, who won at Fulham on Saturday, on 77 points but with a game in hand.

It was by no means a sparkling performance from Klopp's team against Spurs and there were few moments of class or the kind of exhilaration they produced last season but, as the manager acknowledged, at this stage, it is simply about the points.

"It feels like we always have to apologise a little bit that because of the football last season and stuff like that because people always want the 100 per cent package.

"We had to find a way to win football games much more often than in the past. So until now it kind of worked. It’s all good," Klopp added.

"The boys work hard and if we would be first in the table after the last matchday it would be a championship of will, that’s how it is."

While the stakes were high, there was no sign of the nerves becoming too much for Liverpool or their demanding supporters.

"We want it, of course, and it’s not only that. We get used to the situation, step-by-step," said Klopp.

"In the stadium today when it was 1-1, in the three-and-a-half years that I am here that was the best performance of the Liverpool crowd after an equaliser.

"I am really, really happy that attitude again today, it’s brilliant," added the German.

EPL: Title race is a battle of wills, says Liverpool's manager Klopp

Claudio Ranieri's AS Roma homecoming is quickly threatening to turn sour with the veteran coach facing a multitude of problems ahead of Sunday's match against Napoli.

Ranieri, who was appointed one week after being fired by English Premier League side Fulham where he had been in charge for three months, appears to have leapt from the frying pan into the fire.

Having been knocked out of the Champions League by Porto, which led to the downfall of predecessor Eusebio Di Francesco, fifth-placed Roma have lost ground in the race for the Champions League places next season.

They are four points adrift of the top four where they must finish to qualify. Napoli are second with 60 points, 15 behind runaway leaders Juventus who host Empoli on Saturday.

Rome-born Ranieri, in his second stint in charge of the club where he also began his playing career, has inherited a team plagued by injuries and form problems and with an infuriating tendency to switch off during matches.

Having beaten Empoli in his first game, Ranieri's side then lost 2-1 to SPAL, continuing a string of defeats against teams from the lower half of the table. Ranieri gave a withering assessment of the performance against SPAL.

"We need to be more determined, more of a team and also improve our tactics, because we ran hard, but with no real reasoning and that's not good enough," he said.

Italian media reported that tempers flared in the Roma dressing-room at halftime at SPAL with a furious row between strikers Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Dzeko.

The club have not commented on the reports.

Roma go into Sunday's match with injury problems, something which has been a feature of their season.

El Shaarawy and full back Alessandro Florenzi both left the Italy squad with calf problems during the international break and are unavailable while Daniele De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Javier Pastore are doubtful.

La Repubblica newspaper calculated that Roma's squad have suffered 40 muscular injuries between them this season.

There are also worries about the form of goalkeeper Robin Olsen after his performance in the 3-3 draw for Sweden against Norway on Tuesday, with suggestions that Ranieri could turn to Antonio Mirante.

Olsen's long-term future at the club, after some unconvincing displays, is also in doubt.

Meanwhile, forward Diego Perotti denied comments by his father Hugo, a former player, about a possible return to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors.

"My father dropped me in it and I'm angry," Perotti told Tyc Sport in Argentina. "I still have two years of my contract to go and I'm not returning to Argentina at the moment."

Ranieri warned that the players were playing for their future at the club. "There's a plan in place if Roma get into the Champions League. If we don't, quite a few of these guys could change clubs," he said.

"I can't say if there will be a revolution if Roma don't qualify for the Champions League, but if they don't get the revenue from that competition something will inevitably have to change."

Sala, 28, had signed for English Premier League side Cardiff City and was flying to his new team from his old club Nantes in France when his plane went missing over the Channel on January 21.

The wreckage was located on the seabed. <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/body-found-in-wreckage-of-footballer-salas-plane-investigators-195090">The striker's body was recovered</a> but pilot David Ibbotson is still missing. The plane remains under the sea.

In a brief hearing in Bournemouth on the south coast, an inquest into Sala's death was opened, and adjourned until November 6 pending further inquiries.

The post-mortem presented at the hearing gave Sala's cause of death as "head and trunk injuries".

Sala was formally identified by fingerprints.

In English law, inquests are held to examine sudden or unexplained deaths.

They set out to determine the identity of the deceased, the place and time of death as well as how the deceased came by their death, but they do not apportion blame.

'You shouldn't give up'&nbsp;

Senior coroner's officer Ian Parry told the hearing that the plane "was located on the seabed in international waters.

"Following a closer examination of the site a body, later identified as Mr Sala, was found and recovered.

"To date the pilot, Mr Ibbotson, has not been found.

"Police, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch and the Civil Aviation Authority are continuing with their inquiries," he said.

A fundraising campaign to restart the search for Ibbotson is already more than halfway to its £300,000 ($385,000, 340,000 euro) target.

"If you've got hope then you shouldn't give up," his daughter Danielle told ITV television.

"He wouldn't stop searching for me."

Nantes gave a final rousing send off to Sala with a series of moving gestures in their Ligue 1 match against Nimes on Sunday.

Known as the Canaries due to their yellow kit, Nantes played in a one-off full black outfit with Sala's name on the back of each shirt.

Tickets for the game were sold at a symbolic nine euros ($10) in memory of the player's shirt number, which they have also withdrawn.

Before Saturday's Premier League match between Southampton and visitors Cardiff, a minute's silence was observed.

Liverpool posted a world record-breaking £106 million ($137 million) net profit last year even after spending £190 million on new players, according to financial results announced on Friday.

The club's profit before tax was £125 million -- up from £40 million -- with the club benefiting from increased revenue both on and off the pitch from a run to the Champions League final in Kiev, where they were beaten by Real Madrid.

Turnover increased by £90 million to £455 million in the 12 months to May 31 last year, with media revenue, commercial revenue and matchday revenue all up.

The previous record was set by Leicester (£80 million after tax) in 2016/2017, the season after they won the Premier League, when they reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool still trail the two Manchester clubs in revenue terms. United declared their results for the 12 months to the end of last June in September, with revenues of £590 million.

Jurgen Klopp's side are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League as they chase their first English top-flight title for 29 years.

The financial statement shows £137 million came from player transfers, the largest chunk being Philippe Coutinho's January sale to Barcelona in a deal that could eventually worth up to £142 million, during the accounting period.

The club invested heavily, signing Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrew Robertson, Dominic Solanke and Virgil Van Dijk, who arrived as the world's most expensive defender at £75 million.

Since the end of the reporting period club owners Fenway Sports Group have spent more money on players, with Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker, briefly the world's most expensive goalkeeper, coming in at a cost of £165 million but those deals will be reflected in the current year's figures.

"Financial results do fluctuate depending on player trading costs and timing of payments but what's clear in these latest results is the further strengthening of our underlying financial footing and profits being reinvested in the squad and infrastructure," said chief financial officer Andy Hughes.

"Since the reporting period, which is now nearly 12 months old, we have continued reinvesting in the playing squad from those areas of growth. We're making solid progress right across the club."

Overall, the club’s social media platforms had a 14 percent growth rate and in May 2018, they had the highest viewing figures on YouTube ever for a Premier League club and third of any sports club globally.

In January, Liverpool climbed two places to seventh in Deloitte's Football Money League. The top-ranked English club on the Deloitte's list were Manchester United, in third. &nbsp;

Liverpool post £106 million world record net profit

If more proof were needed of how unpredictable the Premier League can be it was provided on Wednesday as Liverpool blew a chance take a vice-like grip on the title race and Chelsea suffered their worst league defeat in 23 years.

After champions Manchester City's shock loss at Newcastle United on Tuesday and Manchester United's home draw with Burnley, Liverpool caught the bug at home to Leicester City.

Victory would have sent Juergen Klopp's side seven points clear of City with 14 games remaining but they could only draw 1-1 despite Sadio Mane giving them a third-minute lead.

Chelsea collapsed to a 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth as the Premier League's supposed lesser lights continued to cause mischief at the top end of the table.

Liverpool, seeking a first title since 1990, have still increased the gap over City from four points to five but it was night of jitters at a freezing Anfield.

To make matters worse Leicester's scorer Harry Maguire had been fortunate to still be on the pitch after a professional foul on Mane with the score 1-0 to the home side.

Liverpool also had a strong penalty claim waved away in the second half when Naby Keita was fouled by Ricardo Pereira.

"If that is not a real chance and goalscoring situation, I do not know what is," Klopp said of Maguire's escape.

Of the penalty claim he said: "It was probably the clearest penalty situation we have had. The ref was in the best position on the pitch. You will have to ask him why he didn't give it."

Mane's opener came after a superb passing move but thereafter Liverpool's inspiration ran dry and Maguire scored from close range shortly before halftime after the hosts failed to deal properly with a free kick.

"We have a point more, not exactly what we wanted, but it is fine," Klopp said of the draw.

Chelsea drubbing

Tottenham Hotspur looked as though they were also about to stumble but came from behind to beat Watford with late goals for Son Heung-min -- in his first game since returning from the Asia Cup -- and Fernando Llorente at Wembley.

It left Mauricio Pochettino's side just two points behind Manchester City and seven off Liverpool, opening up the possibility of a three-horse title race.

Perhaps of more importance for third-placed Tottenham, however, is the seven-point lead they have over Arsenal and Chelsea in the battle for fourth spot.

Chelsea's 4-0 drubbing at Bournemouth -- a second consecutive league defeat -- left the spotlight focussed on manager Maurizio Sarri who locked himself in the changing room with his players for 45 minutes after the game.

It was only the second time since the Premier League began in 1992 that Chelsea have suffered a four-goal defeat and the first since a 5-1 loss to Liverpool in 1996.

They had dominated the first half with Mateo Kovacic's header being touched onto the bar by Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc. But even with Gonzalo Higuain making his first Premier league start, they lacked penetration.

The second half was a horror show as Joshua King scored twice either side of one for David Brooks with substitute Charlie Daniels completing the rout in stoppage time.

Bournemouth's win came a year after they beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

It was Daniels' goal that meant Chelsea slipped below Arsenal on fewer goals scored and with Manchester United only a further two points in arrears, Chelsea's top-four hopes are wavering.

Southampton and Crystal Palace remain too close to the relegation zone for comfort after a 1-1 draw at St Mary's in which Palace had goalscorer Wilfried Zaha sent off.

James Ward-Prowse secured a point for Southampton with a 77th-minute equaliser.

Chelsea drubbing Tottenham Hotspur looked as though they were also about to stumble but came from behind to beat Watford with late goals for Son Heung-min -- in his first game since returning from the Asia Cup -- and Fernando Llorente at Wembley.

David De Gea said the "real Manchester United" <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/return-of-encyclopedia-ferguson-massive-for-manchester-united-pochettino-189715">had been on </a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/return-of-encyclopedia-ferguson-massive-for-manchester-united-pochettino-189715">show</a><a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/return-of-encyclopedia-ferguson-massive-for-manchester-united-pochettino-189715"> after his brilliant</a> goalkeeping display secured a 1-0 win over Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday.

The victory gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his sixth successive win in all competitions, and fifth in a row in the Premier League, as United's caretaker manager since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho.

It also meant the former United striker had broken the record of the legendary Matt Busby, who won his first five games as the Old Trafford club's manager.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal shortly before half-time but credit for the win belonged primarily to De Gea whose 11 saves were the most he had made in a top-flight match without conceding a goal.

But the 28-year-old played down his contribution to United's latest victory, a win that saw them draw level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal and instead praised the "happiness" Solskjaer has brought to the dressing room.

"We won the game against a top team, we controlled the first half but in the second half they had chances," De Gea told Sky Sports.

"I was feeling very well with the first two saves, it was a great game. I don't even remember some of the saves so I can't pick a best."

"The manager brought some happiness, the players are playing well and the team is very strong now." "This is the real Manchester United," he added.

Meanwhile, Rashford was in no doubt about how much De Gea had done against a Tottenham side who remained nine points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.

"It's a good responsibility to be the main striker but everyone has chipped in," said Rashford. "It was the keeper (who won us the game) today."

Meanwhile, Tottenham defender Ben Davies said Mauricio Pochettino's men should not be disheartened by a defeat that was largely down to De Gea's 'dream match' between the posts.

"David de Gea has pulled off three or four brilliant saves, and on another day, they go in," Davies said.

"It is disappointing but it wasn't the worst performance. The boys up front are slotting them away most weeks, but today it wasn't their day."

Brexit is imminent. Everybody knows that Brexit means Britain's exit from the European Union and the world is debating over its implications on immigration, trade etc. which will be affected after Theresa May's government and the British Parliament agrees to economically split from mainland Europe.
&nbsp;
The government-level talks are going on, while, the discussion is limited when it comes to Brexit and&nbsp;football.

Britain's top-flight football league and probably the best football league in the world - English Premier League (EPL) will be hit if 'Hard Brexit' is delivered by the government.

A 'hard' exit from the EU would see tighter regulations regarding the movement of goods and people. If restrictions are placed on the movement of players, then attendance of players like, French player N'golo Kante and Algerian Riyad Mahrez will be doubtful.&nbsp;

So far, the Premier League clubs have been able to sign players without work permits from within the European Economic Area (EEA) and players from outside the EEA must satisfy strict criteria to gain a work permit.

How Brexit will impact the Premier league?

To be exact, 53.4 per cent of England voted to leave EU but when we break it down to cities, it will give us a fair idea whether the clubs want Brexit or not.

The highest ranked football clubs are present in cities like Liverpool, City of London, Manchester etc, and they voted to remain in the EU.

EU referendum results:

City of London (Turnout: 73.5%): Leave 24.7% | Remain 75.3%
Liverpool (Turnout: 65.0%): Leave 41.8% | Remain 58.2%
Manchester (Turnout: 59.7%): Leave 39.6% | Remain 60.4%
Leicester (Turnout: 65.0%): Leave 48.9% | Remain 51.1%

Burnley chairman Mike Garlick and his Stoke counterpart Peter Coates have claimed that Brexit could be "hugely damaging" to English football.

Like them, there were several people who have come forward to deny Brexit's impact because the owners earn a huge amount of money from transfers and marketing of big names.

There is no denying the fact that a huge number of talent arrives from Europe, as top football talent lies in the mainland and major European teams belong in the top flight.

But it will give an opportunity for other continents which are working to encourage football.

English clubs might be able to scout more proactively in South America or Asia, where clubs from Spain and Germany currently get good value for money.&nbsp;

It may also put more pressure on English clubs to develop and provide opportunities for academy talent, who come at a lower cost than recruited players, remember David Beckham belonged to the Manchester youth team, so did other England greats - Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen came from Liverpool FC Reserves and Academy, Wayne Rooney came from Everton Academy.

The fear of relegation and its financial consequences will always put pressure on Premier League clubs to spend, but extra options from the academy and new markets would help reduce the premium English clubs pay burden.&nbsp;

Brexit will definitely affect English clubs but at the very least it will ultimately be a push factor for change.&nbsp;

Impact of Brexit on English Premier League

Liverpool maintained their best start to a season as Mo Salah, back at his dazzling best, scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth that took them, temporarily at least, to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Salah set them on their way in the 25th minute, latching on to the rebound after Roberto Firmino's 30-metre shot was palmed into his path by Asmir Begovic, even though television replays showed the Egyptian to be marginally offside when he pounced.

There was no argument about his second strike straight after the interval when Firmino again freed him to maraud on goal and fire into the corner, with the help of the slightest nick off Nathan Ake's heel.

After the unfortunate Steve Cook diverted Andy Robertson's cross past Begovic for an own goal, Salah worked his real magic, outmuscling Cook to get to Adam Lallana's through ball before dancing nimbly around Begovic and slotting home late on.

Salah's treble at the Vitality Stadium put him on 10 league goals this season, matching Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the top of the scoring charts that he dominated last season.

Against tough, seventh-placed opponents, Juergen Klopp's side went a 17th straight league match unbeaten, equalling their club record set 10 years ago, and emulated the 4-0 thrashing of the Cherries in the corresponding fixture last season.

It put them a point clear of Manchester City at the summit on 42 points, though Pep Guardiola's men have the chance to regain top spot later when they visit Chelsea.

Amazing Career

It was a splendid afternoon for Liverpool's James Milner to celebrate becoming only the 13th player to make 500 top-flight appearances in the Premier League era.

Salah even gave his own man-of-the match award to his 32-year-old team mate to mark his achievement.

"He's had an amazing career. I have to congratulate him on an amazing career -- he deserves this today," Salah told Milner on Sky Sports. "I will not take it."

As he clutched the match ball after his second Liverpool hat-trick, the Egyptian added: "It wasn't a bad way at all (to get back among the goals)...I enjoyed the last one the most. I was calm."

Now getting back into his most imperious stride after a slow start to the campaign, Salah added: "My expectations are very high.

"I know everyone else's expectations of me are also very high but the most important thing is for us to win each game and be top of the table."

For Milner, it was a special afternoon after 16 years of excellence in the Premier League. "It's the perfect way to celebrate it (the 500th appearance)," he said.

"It wasn't our best performance of the season by any means but we were efficient, got the job done and this fella (Salah) is unbelievable... He can win you a game on his own."

That is 74 matches sooner than former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs who is second on the list with 367 games.

Fabregas' record-breaking assist came on 31st December 2016 when he set up Brazilian midfielder Willian's second goal in Chelsea's 4-2 win over Stoke City.

He credited&nbsp;Arsenal icons Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp in the process.

He remembered his most famous assist; threading the pass for Andres Iniesta to score the winning goal for Spain in the 2010 World Cup final.

"It was not the most beautiful, not the most amazing assist. But a simple pass broke the line… and it got us the World Cup," he recalls.

The 31-year-old made his Premier League debut at Arsenal in 2004 at the age of 16 years.&nbsp;

His ability to play in tight spaces and still create chances led to a move to his boyhood club, Barcelona in 2011.

Three years later he returned to London with Chelsea and has gone on to win the Premier League twice since joining.

He credited the sharp training he received in the Barcelona youth team where he played with world-class experienced professionals including Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique.
