The British government issued a rare rebuke on Thursday to the Football Association (FA) for its decision not to light up Wembley Stadium's arch in blue and white in solidarity with Israel following last week's attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas. Wembley, the home of England's national football team, has previously lit up its iconic arch with the colours of Ukraine, Turkey and other countries in solidarity. However, it will not do the same for Israel, media reports said.

"I am extremely disappointed ... and have made my views clear to the FA," Britain's Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport Lucy Frazer said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"It is especially disappointing in light of the FA's bold stance on other terrorist attacks in the recent past. Words and actions matter. The Government is clear: we stand with Israel," she added.

The government this week projected the Israeli flag onto Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Downing Street residence, while parliament lit itself up in blue and white, echoing similar displays of solidarity in other parts of the Western world.

The FA released a statement earlier on Thursday, saying flags and shirts showing support for victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will not be allowed for England's upcoming games against Australia and Italy at Wembley. England and Australia players will wear black armbands for their friendly on Friday, the FA said, and there will be a period of silence before kick off.

"On Friday evening, we will remember the innocent victims of the devastating events in Israel and Palestine," the FA said in the statement, without mentioning Wembley's arch.

"We will only permit flags, replica kits and other representations of nationality for the competing nations inside Wembley Stadium."

England then host Italy in a European Championship qualifier on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate says he is driven to make England the world's top-ranked team, stressing there is no room for "sloppiness" as they seek to end their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on a high. England, who face North Macedonia in Skopje on Monday, are all but assured of being among the top seeds in next month's draw for the finals in Germany.

But they were disappointing in Friday's 2-0 victory against Malta at Wembley and will be keen to improve against lowly North Macedonia, whom they hammered 7-0 at Old Trafford in June. "Qualification's done," the England boss told British media ahead of the Group C finale.

"With the games at the weekend, we might be ranked third in the world at the minute (England are fourth in the latest published FIFA rankings), but we're two places off where we need to be so we can't waste games.

"Some of the players have got three games to get into a squad, some have got maybe three to get into a team." Southgate said the level of performance had to be "spot on every time". World Cup winners Argentina are top of the rankings, with France in second place and Brazil third. England have been in the top five for five straight years.

Asked if being number one drives him on, Southgate said: "Yeah, because ultimately you achieve that through consistency and you've got to play well in the tournaments as well because the ranking points are higher in the tournaments.

"Also, it sets behaviours every day on the training pitch, off the training pitch. "If you are going to be the top-ranked team, there's no room for sloppiness or casualness. That's got to be our drive." England's final camp of the year has been disrupted by absentees. Five players withdrew from the original squad through injury and two more departed the squad before they flew to the Balkans. The Football Association announced Kieran Trippier had gone home due to a personal issue, while injury meant Jarrod Bowen left the camp on Sunday.

World Rugby said Monday it had launched an official investigation into the allegation that South Africa's Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at Tom Curry of England during the Springboks' victory in the Rugby World Cup semi-final. Mbonambi, 32, is alleged to have called England backrow forward Curry "you white (followed by an expletive)" in the first half of Saturday's 16-15 victory.

"World Rugby takes all allegations of discriminatory behaviour extremely seriously," the sport's governing body said in a statement on Monday, five days before South Africa face New Zealand in the World Cup final. "We can confirm that we are formally reviewing the allegation made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday.

"World Rugby will not be making further comment until the conclusion of the process."Curry approached referee Ben O'Keeffe about half an hour into the hard-fought match in Paris to report the alleged comment and asked what he should do in response.

"Nothing, please. I'll be on it," replied O'Keeffe.Curry was asked after the game whether Mbonambi, who also appeared to refuse to shake the England player's hand at the end of the match, had said something he had taken issue with.

"Yeah," replied the 25-year-old, before adding that "it does not need to be talked about".South Africa Rugby said on Sunday they would look into the matter."We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence," it said."We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim."

England coach Steve Borthwick declined to comment on the matter on Sunday.Verbal abuse in rugby is rarely penalised, although England prop Joe Marler and South African Jacques Potgieter have been punished in the past. Marler received a two match-ban for remarks addressed to Wales's Samson Lee in 2016 and Potgieter was fined for an on-field homophobic slur in a Super Rugby game in 2015.The Springboks, though, will be nervously awaiting the outcome of World Rugby's investigation.

Mbonambi is the Springboks' only specialist hooker due to Malcom Marx's tournament-ending injury, although converted back row forward Deon Fourie has covered from the bench. They can therefore ill afford to be without Mbonambi, who was man of the match in the quarter-final win over hosts France, for Saturday's final against fellow three-time champions New Zealand at the Stade de France.

All Blacks defence coach Scott McLeod acknowledged as such in a press conference on Monday."If anything came of that (World Rugby process) for them, I imagine that would be a massive dent for them," said McLeod."He is a leader of their team. When Siya (Kolisi) goes off, then he becomes captain. So I imagine that would really impact them."

England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler feels that 'one tournament doesn't define you' and he'll use the ODI World Cup 2023 debacle as positive learning in career going forward. England are currently in West Indies for a white-ball tour and and Buttler notes that there's enough talent in the team to take England cricket forward.

"There's some really exciting talent in this team," Butter said on the sidelines of second-day of practice in Antigua. "Young guys eager to get their opportunities and perform. There's some guys that have not been exposed to ODI cricket a lot, but have a lot of experience in Test cricket, so not necessarily new to the international game. It's a nice blend."

England, who had entered the 2023 edition of the quadrennial tournament as defending champions, had a horrid time as they finished seventh among 10 teams with just three wins in nine games. Buttler is eager to use that experience as a motivation to take the team forward.

"(And realising) that sort of tournament doesn't define you. I've got to use it as motivation and hunger to push myself and the team forward and take the learnings from that. Use it as a positive experience to go into the rest of my career….I always think of Ben Stokes' words to Jofra (Archer) about the (2019) Super Over. 'Whatever happens here doesn't define you,' and I certainly feel like that World Cup isn't the defining moment for me," said Buttler.

Talking about his personal takeaway from the tournament, Buttler said: "That's a big learning for me, managing my own game is vital to the team and just finding different ways to do that to allow me to walk to the middle with a clear mind."

England captain Marlie Packer said Tuesday that the Red Roses would be "ready" for their showdown with hosts New Zealand in a looming repeat of last year's nail-biting women's World Cup final. Packer scored one of England's five tries last November in Auckland, but finished on the losing side as New Zealand clinched a 34-31 victory in the dying seconds. That bitter defeat ended England's 30-match winning streak dating back to 2019.

"A year on, we've got a very different squad, a new coaching staff, so it's really exciting. We can't wait to play," Packer said Tuesday in Wellington. England, who won a fifth straight Six Nations title last April, are back in New Zealand to take part in a new top-level women's competition.

They face Australia at Wellington's Sky Stadium on Friday to kick off "WXV1" -- a round-robin tournament played over each of the next three weekends. Hosts New Zealand, Australia and Canada -- the best teams from the Pacific Four competition -- will each play the top Six Nations teams England, France and Wales.

The third and final round of matches will be in Auckland, where the Black Ferns play England in a repeat of last year's World Cup final."That was a massive game and there was a lot of disappointment for us," said Packer, the Six Nations' top scorer this season with seven tries. A forest officer in England stumbled upon the footprint of a dinosaur that is believed to be at least 140 million years old.

During a routine jogging last Sunday (Nov 12), National Trust ranger Sophie Giles chanced upon the fossilised treasure on the grounds of Brownsea Castle, in Poole Harbour, Dorset.

The footprint is believed to belong to Iguanodon— a three-toed bulky herbivore which was 36ft long and lived between 157 and 93 million years ago, around the Mesozoic Era, the Telegraph reported.

Footprint fossilised for thousands of years

According to experts, the foot was imprinted when the area was covered in tropical forests and swamps. As a result, it fossilised over thousands of years and became easier to see after it filled with water during a rain shower.

Local media reports say that the region is known for its Jurassic coastline and is abound with dinosaur footprints. Every year, it attracts hundreds of fossil hunters from around the world.

It is thought that the rock originated from the nearby Isle of Purbeck peninsula, where dinosaur footprints have been found near the village of Langton Matravers.

Posting about the "exciting find" on social media, the National Trust said: "We believe that the rock may have come from the Isle of Purbeck, where you can already see many dinosaur footprints at Langton Matravers."

India's nine consecutive wins in the group stage of the Cricket World Cup has been largely down to a bowling attack that has not conceded more than 273 in any game. The five frontline bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj have combined for a total of 75 wickets and have been extremely economical as well with all five going under 5 runs-per-over. How do New Zealand negotiate this threat? 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore and former New Zealand international Chris Harris discuss New Zealand's options ahead of the first semi-final.

India face their 'bogey' team New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ODI World Cup in Mumbai's Wankhede stadium. The Men in Blue lost that semi-final by 18 runs. However, India beat the kiwis by four wickets in the group stage to end a 20-year wiat for a win over New Zealand in a global tournament. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore and former New Zealand international Chris Harris set up the clash with Wion Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

England player Ben Stokes has hinted at hanging up his boots in the 50-over format once again, following the culmination of the World Cup for the defending champions. Stokes said he would have to take a tough call, owing to the busy Test cricket season next year.

Stokes was speaking after England thumped Pakistan at the Eden Gardens on Saturday (Nov 11) to walk away on a high, in a campaign that was marked by a string of disastrous results.

"I think to answer that one it goes back to my initial reason for stepping away from this format, to ease my workload. As Test captain, there is a lot of stuff coming up. There's a lot of stuff that I want to do with that Test team," Stokes told Sky Sports.

"It will be a decision that I'm probably going to have to think about, quite hard, to produce an outcome. You never know the body might be in a lot better position than it was in the last 18 months," he added.

While Stokes mulls his ODI cricket future, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday (Nov 12) released the 15-member squad for the upcoming West Indies tour. Not surprisingly, Stokes was not included in the ODI list where only six players from the World Cup found a spot.

England's golden generation will play together one final time and will look to end a dismal title defence on a high with qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy still up for grabs. New Zealand's win over Sri Lanka all but knocked Pakistan out but the 1992 Champions still have a mathematical shot at progressing if they bat first. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore sets up the game with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Can Pakistan beat the odds one final time?

The rain stayed away in Bengaluru and New Zealand chased down 172 in 23.2 overs to beat 1996 World Champions Sri Lanka. New Zealand's Net Run Rate of 0.743 means Pakistan will have to beat England by 287 runs and Afghanistan will need a 438-run margin of victory against South Africa to go through. These are highly improbable scenarios and effectively the Kiwis are through to a fifth consecutive World Cup Semi-final and will play India in Mumbai on November 15. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore gives his verdict on why Pakistan missed out.

England crashed out of the tournament after succumbing to a sixth loss as Australia won the match by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Nov 4) evening.

Speaking at the post-match conference, Buttler wore a dejected look and said he was disappointed due to the loss.

"Certainly low point, definitely as a captain to be stood in this position, had high hopes but incredibly disappointing, hurts a lot. We certainly haven't done ourselves enough justice, coming into the tournament, we fancied ourselves to do well to go all the way, there's so much hard work but we let ourselves down and people back home," he added.

Buttler said his poor form with the bat was one of the reasons why England struggled in the tournament.

"I haven't played as well as I can, in such a pivotal position, I think I let myself and my team down. Only way to come back is to put in the hard yards at the nets and come back better in the next game."

"Just summing up the condition was really important, I thought we put up a good competitive total on the board, but it was always going to be tough to defend, ground got really wet, for me length control and attacking the stumps was important, length control was really satisfying."

With the win, Australia have given themselves the much-needed cushion to qualify for the knockouts. They are comfortably perched at the third spot on the points table with five wins in seven games and would require another victory to seal a place in the semis.

Only way to come back is to put in the hard yards at the nets and come back better in the next game." Adam Zampa was adjudged the Player of the Match for his brilliant performance with the bat and the ball. The leg-spinner said dew played a part in the match but he stuck to his line and lengths. "Just summing up the condition was really important, I thought we put up a good competitive total on the board, but it was always going to be tough to defend, ground got really wet, for me length control and attacking the stumps was important, length control was really satisfying." With the win, Australia have given themselves the much-needed cushion to qualify for the knockouts. They are comfortably perched at the third spot on the points table with five wins in seven games and would require another victory to seal a place in the semis. (With inputs from agencies)

World Cup 2023: 'Hurts a lot,' says captain Jos Buttler as champions England crash out of tournament

The Bank of England (BoE) has opted to maintain its historically high interest rates, signalling a steadfast commitment to navigating through a challenging economic landscape. Despite acknowledging the proximity of a potential recession and a forecast of minimal growth in the coming years, the BoE has reiterated its stance of retaining borrowing costs at a robust 5.25 per cent.

This decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), voting 6-3 in favour of maintaining this rate, aligns with the consensus reached in September following a series of 14 consecutive interest rate hikes.

The BoE's projection underscores the necessity of a prolonged period of restrictive monetary policy to address the pressing issue of inflation. Highlighting the urgency of this approach, the central bank emphasised the need to "squeeze out of the system" inflation levels that rank among the highest in the world's major economies.

Reuters quoted BoE Governor Andrew Bailey, who highlighted the efforts to curtail inflation, stating, "We will be watching closely to see if further increases in interest rates are needed, but even if they are not needed, it is much too early to be thinking about rate cuts."

The central bank's assessment, however, acknowledges ongoing global uncertainties, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, which poses a risk of higher energy prices potentially feeding into inflation. The BoE remains vigilant about the impact of these external factors on the domestic economy. It also highlighted that strong wage growth is a concern, which could sustain price pressures.

The labour market data, though essential for policy decisions, has faced challenges due to low survey response rates. As a result, the BoE expresses "increasing uncertainties" about official labour market statistics. The central bank anticipates that job growth may have been weaker than initially assumed, and the robust wage growth is expected to moderate over time.

Regarding the economic outlook, the BoE's forecasts indicate a lack of growth in the British economy during the July-September period, with a marginal expansion of just 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter. The central bank's projections extend to anticipate a static economic scenario for 2024, followed by a modest expansion of 0.25 per cent in 2025. Despite these cautious forecasts, the BoE anticipates a return to its 2 per cent inflation target by the end of 2025, albeit with a slight delay of roughly six months in comparison to previous projections.

Market sentiment suggests that the BoE is likely to maintain the current interest rates at least until August of the following year, potentially signalling a shift toward lowering rates. Economists have varying opinions on when the Bank Rate might decrease. While some believe it could happen in the second quarter of 2024 as inflation cools, others predict rates will remain unchanged throughout the entirety of the next year.

A remarkable aspect within the BoE's assessment of the economy is the prediction of a 4.6 per cent inflation rate in the fourth quarter of 2023. This projection aligns with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's commitment to achieving price growth this year, an essential element of his political pledge in anticipation of an upcoming election in 2024.

Sri Lanka suffered an embarrassing 302-run loss to India in Mumbai with the difference in class between both sides very evident. Sri Lanka slid to 14 for five and the lack of application was pretty evident. Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore was extremely disappointed by the Sri Lankan batters as a poor campaign went from bad to worse.
