Former England player Wayne Rooney has cast aspersions over the potential selection of Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in the playing XI for Three Lions' first match at the Euros.

Rooney said manager Gareth Southgate was going to pick TAA in the XI but he had reservations over the defensive capabilities of the talented right-back. The fans, however, slammed Rooney for making 'lazy, uninformed' opinion about the English player.&nbsp;

"I think he (Southgate) will go with Trent. I think he’s probably the most gifted player we have with the ball at his feet that we've got,"&nbsp;Rooney said on The Overlap's Euros fan debate.&nbsp;

"Defensively he is all over the place. He can't defend. I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the middle of the pitch," he added.&nbsp;

Trent impressed during the two international friendlies England played in the lead-up to the tournament. He is expected to star alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the middle.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harry Kane says England's shock 1-0 defeat against Iceland could be a "nice wake-up call", showing the scale of the task ahead of them at Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate's men are among the favourites to win the tournament in Germany but Friday's farewell party at Wembley fell flat and the players were booed off in a half-empty stadium.

Iceland took a early lead through Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson and the visitors then had the better chances to extend their advantage as the hosts toiled at both ends of the pitch.

England captain Kane knows lessons have to be learned ahead of their Group C opener against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

"Sometimes you need this wake-up call," he said. "There are areas we need to improve, especially with our pressure.

"The group games are going to be very similar to this. We are going to have to defend well, especially the longer balls, and with the ball we need to be a bit more patient."

Kane, 30, said despite the defeat there was a lot of justified optimism among England fans that the Euro 2020 finalists could go one better this year.

"Ultimately it is down to us to make sure we get it right on the pitch," he said. "This could be a nice wake-up call for everyone to realise it is not going to be as easy as people think. There is a lot of work to do."

Kane, who scored 44 goals in 45 games in his debut season at Bayern Munich, said he was raring to go.

"Being so close in the last Euros, there is a real hunger to be back. It comes around quick, if I'm honest," he said. "We had the World Cup and we are back here again. I feel like we are on the right path. But as we all know as well, it is really difficult to win these tournaments.

"There are a lot of things that you have to do right and prepare right, and you need a bit of luck here and there. Every winner does.

"We have that mindset that we can achieve it. We also know there is a lot of hard work from now until the final in July."

Loss to Iceland a wake-up call as England prepare hard for better finish at Euros, says Harry Kane

England and Manchester United player Luke Shaw has admitted that he and the medical staff at the club made a mistake with his injury that has put major doubt on his chances of starring in the Euro 2024.

England and Manchester United player Luke Shaw has admitted that he and the medical staff at the club made a mistake with his injury that has put major doubt on his chances of starring in the Euro 2024. Shaw featured for United only 15 times in the 23-24 season and has been struggling to get back to full fitness as the continental championship gets underway next week. Shaw said he pushed himself to play the FA Cup final against Manchester city which further aggravated his injury. Shaw explained that prior to the domestic cup final, a similar mistake was made when he went off with injury at half-time against Aston Villa in February. Despite the injury, Shaw was given the all-clear by the United medical team and the injury flared up in the game against Luton Town. “It’s kind of everyone’s fault. Partly my fault, partly medical staff, I think everyone would admit that. I didn’t train the whole week. The scan came back and there wasn’t too much there. But I didn’t train all week, then trained the day before the game. If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say no. I shouldn’t have played," said Shaw. "The circumstances were that I did push to do everything I can to be fit for United, and that's been my whole season, really. In my opinion, I was pushing to try and get back for the games and the final, and I think I pushed too hard," he added. Also read | 'There's work to be done': Declan Rice warns England after 1-0 defeat to Iceland in Euro 2024 build up Only left-back in the squad Shaw is the only designated left-back in the England squad and his absence has disturbed the balance of the playing XI. Gareth Southgate has fielded Kieran Trippier and Joe Gomez in the two friendlies ahead of the Euros but they both haven't looked as effective going forward as Shaw. England square up against Serbia in the opening match of the tournament. However, Shaw is not optimistic of making it to the XI as he has only got 'one chance' in the Euro. "I would love to make the first game, but I don't want to rush too quickly because realistically I've only got one chance. If I feel something, then that's it. I don't want that to happen," said Shaw. England were defeated 0-1 by Iceland in the last friendly before the tournament as Southgate's tactical frailties came out in the open yet again. Gareth Southgate insisted England's embarrassing 1-0 defeat against Iceland in their final warm-up before Euro 2024 will serve as a useful reality check for his title contenders.

Southgate's side had hoped for a confidence-boosting victory at Wembley on Friday before travelling to Germany as one of the Euro favourites.

But Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson's first half goal spoiled England's farewell and led to the lacklustre hosts being booed off at half-time and the final whistle.

Against a team ranked 72nd in the world, who were unable to qualify for the Euros, Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Kobbie Mainoo all failed to make compelling cases to be included in the starting line-up at the Euros.

"We have to be better. We didn't get our pressing right. There were questions asked that we weren't able to answer," Southgate said. "It was obviously a disjointed and disappointing performance. We didn't show enough character, but I think it's a really good focus for us ahead of the tournament.

"I'm confident we will be better than tonight. Everybody's saying we're going to go there and walk through the tournament. The reality of international football isn't that."

Adding to Southgate's worries, John Stones didn't reappear after the interval, possibly a precautionary move after the England centre-back fell awkwardly in the first half.

"We think he is probably okay. We didn't want to take the chance," Southgate said.

Southgate said his starting line-up was "close" to the team that will face Serbia in England's Group C opener in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.

If that is the case, he will need to coax a substantially improved effort from a group that looked short on energy and composure in the absence of resting Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.

Bored fans spent most of the night entertaining themselves by buzzing the pitch with paper aeroplanes and few stayed for the post-match lap of honour.

"You'd like a good performance and to be leaving on a high. We didn't play well enough to keep them excited," said Southgate, whose side have won one of their last five games.

While Southgate can point out that this result will count for nothing when England start their bid to win a first major trophy in 58 years, it was still an alarming performance that raised questions about key areas of his team.

Southgate slams England after Iceland loss in Euros warm-up, says 'It was a disjointed performance'

England boss Gareth Southgate has rebuffed the talks linking him to a potential move to Manchester United to replace under-fire Erik ten Hag at the end of the season. Southgate said his attention was firmly on the upcoming Euros and that he intended to see out his contract with the Three Lions.&nbsp;

Ten Hag's second season with United has been a complete bust with the team on the brink of finishing without any European football next summer. Naturally, there have been rumours that the United board was seeking a replacement, with Southgate at the top of the list of candidates to replace the Dutchman.&nbsp;

"I’ve got one thing to focus on. That’s having as successful a tournament with England as possible. Everything else outside of that is a complete irrelevance to me," Southgate was quoted as saying by BBC.

"Well, for me, it's not an issue [distractions]&nbsp;and never has been. I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be," he added.&nbsp;

Southgate's current contract with England expires in December and Euro 2024 is the last opportunity for him to win a silverware with, arguably, the most talented England squad ever assembled in recent times.&nbsp;

"There will always be speculation about managers because if you lose a couple of games, you're in trouble - you win a couple of games and it is a different agenda," said Southgate.&nbsp;

"But for me, it [Euro 2024] is a brilliant opportunity. We're looking forward to the tournament. My focus is on how do we go a step further than we went in the last Euros [when they were beaten on penalties in the final by Italy]."

England manager Gareth Southgate provides update on replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

The bright red cross on a white background that is England's national flag should not be messed with, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Friday (March 22), after Nike's blue and purple alteration to the design on soccer shirts left many fans angry.

Nike, which designs and makes the kit for England's national soccer teams, unveiled its new design this week which it said paid homage to the country's 1966 World Cup-winning men's team.

It features the St. George's Cross, a national symbol for centuries, in shades of blue and purple as well as red on the back of the shirt collar. Nike called the change a "playful update" that was meant to "unite and inspire."

But the move has spurred calls from many soccer fans to scrap the new design, saying they want a return to the traditional colours of the cross rather than the new flag which Nike has said "disrupts history with a modern take on a classic".

With an election expected in Britain this year, in which cultural issues are likely to feature prominently, politicians from across the spectrum have weighed in on the debate.

"Well, obviously, I prefer the original," Sunak told reporters. "My general view is that when it comes to our

national flags, we shouldn't mess with them, because they're a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they're perfect as they are."

Legendary England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has revealed that his battle with alcoholism had taken a turn for the worse, four years after having surgery to prevent him from consuming alcohol.&nbsp;

On the&nbsp;High Performance podcast,&nbsp;Gascoigne described himself as a 'sad drunk' who was now homeless and living in his agent's room.&nbsp;

“I called Katie [Gascoigne's ganet] up in November a few years ago crying my eyes out. I've spent a lot of years being down, when I did my ligaments and then my kneecap, I missed four years of football. I would've got 100 caps [for England]," said&nbsp;Gascoigne speaking to&nbsp;High Performance.

Legendary England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has revealed that his battle with alcoholism had taken a turn for the worse, four years after having surgery to prevent him from consuming alcohol. On the High Performance podcast, Gascoigne described himself as a 'sad drunk' who was now homeless and living in his agent's room. “I called Katie [Gascoigne's ganet] up in November a few years ago crying my eyes out. What I put myself through and other people – jail and rehab, taking cocaine off toilet seats – and then I’m asked to be an ambassador for my country, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry," said Gascoigne. Used to be a happy drunk Known as one of the most influential England attacking midfielders of his time, Gascoigne was responsible for the Three Lions reaching the World Cup semifinal in 1990. He also turned out for the likes of Tottenham, Lazio, Newcastle and Rangers in his club career before retiring in 2004. "I used to be a happy drunk. I ain't anymore. I'm a sad drunk. I don't go out and drink, I drink indoors. People know Paul Gascoigne but Gazza, no one knows. Even me sometimes. I've spent a lot of years being down, when I did my ligaments and then my kneecap, I missed four years of football. I would've got 100 caps [for England]," said Gascoigne speaking to High Performance. I don't think I let any managers down, or the players or the fans you know. If there was anyone I let down, it was myself. But more the drinking side of it, when I finished playing." History will be made at the Women's World Cup on Sunday when England and Spain clash in the final in Sydney with both bidding to win the tournament for the first time.

The game kicks off at 1000 GMT in front of an anticipated sell-out crowd of about 75,000 at Stadium Australia.

It will be the final act of a tournament full of shocks which began one month ago and started with 32 teams, making it the biggest Women's World Cup ever.

Now they are down to the last two and it's a final too close to call. Neither team has ever got this far before.

The two sides last met at the European Championship last summer, when hosts England squeezed into the semi-finals 2-1 in extra time and went on to lift the trophy.

Coach Sarina Wiegman and defender Millie Bright said they were attempting to think of this as just another game, but the skipper admitted there was no getting away from the enormity of the occasion.

British media has been full of references to 1966 -- when the country won the men's World Cup for the only time.

"We know how passionate our nation is back home and how much they want us to win," Bright said on Saturday.

"But for us there is a process, we have a game plan to execute and we need to play the game of our lives."

Chelsea attacker Lauren James is back from a two-match ban for stamping on an opponent in the last-16 victory on penalties over Nigeria.

It would be a surprise, however, if Wiegman makes any changes to the side that impressively saw off Colombia 2-1 and then disposed of co-hosts Australia in the semi-final.

<h2>'Next question'</h2>

Except against Nigeria, England have been mostly ruthless and machine-like in reaching the final, especially in silencing the home crowd in the 3-1 victory over Australia.

Spain are more slick and have often passed their opponents into submission, coupled with sparks of attacking flair.

England are unbeaten at the tournament, but a notable blip for Jorge Vilda's side was their 4-0 drubbing to a Japan team which hit Spain at pace on the counterattack in the group phase.

Spain had never even won a knockout match at the World Cup until this edition and their exploits are even more impressive for the turmoil that threatened to torpedo their chances.

In September last year, 15 players -- many of them from European powerhouse Barcelona -- came out and said they no longer wanted to represent their country.

They had numerous complaints, but their chief issue was with Vilda -- how strict he was, his lack of success, his tactics and his methods.

Three of the 15 mutineers returned for the World Cup and one of them, Barcelona midfield schemer Aitana Bonmati, has been among the best players at the tournament.

Vilda has been asked repeatedly by reporters at the World Cup about the missing players and was once quizzed if the ones he brought to Australia and New Zealand even liked him.

On the eve of the final he appeared to have had enough of that line of questioning, replying: "Next question, please."

He was more forthright about the spirit among his players, saying they were "united".

"The training sessions, the games, everything that's happened outside has been extraordinary," he said.

"They will have memories for the rest of their lives."

<h2>'Sorry' Prince William</h2>

Spain's Queen Letizia will be in attendance but Prince William -- chairman of England's Football Association -- has faced criticism for staying at home.

"Lionesses I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow," he said in a video with daughter Charlotte sitting next to him.

"We're sorry we can't be there in person but we're so proud of everything you've achieved and the millions you've inspired here and around the world."

Whoever wins, it will be a new name on the Women's World Cup.

The United States, who had been chasing a third title in a row, went out on penalties in the last 16 to Sweden.

Norway, Germany and Japan are the only other nations to have lifted the trophy.

Women's World Cup: England, Spain chase history in final showdown

England skipper Harry Kane will target yet another major milestone in his illustrious career as his side takes on Italy in Naples. Kane, currently on 53 goals for England and is level with Wayne Rooney for the all-time record for most goals for the national side. While the defending champions have a good record on their home turf, Italy’s last competitive home match was against North Macedonia where they lost 0-1 and therefore failed to make the FIFA World Cup 2022. The clash will be the repeat of the Euro 2020 final when Italy beat England on penalties at Wembley.

<h3>Kane targets all-time record</h3>

Kane, currently on 53 goals for England missed an important penalty in World Cup quarterfinal that condemned his side to exit and also miss out on the record. The Tottenham forward recently became his club’s all-time top scorer and will look to replicate his heroics for the country as well. The match in Naples will be Kane’s 81st for the national side where he is expected to carry the burden of the nation.

<h3>England out for revenge</h3>

While Kane will have personal milestone on agenda, the Three Lions will be out for revenge, having lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final. Luke Shaw who scored early in the match saw his goal cancelled out by Leonardo Bonucci in the second half, before Italy won the contest on a shootout. Roberto Mancini’s side will still be aware of the danger posed by Gareth Southgate’s men as they try to start on a high.

Euro 2024 qualifier: Harry Kane targets another milestone as England face Italy in champions backyard

Former England football captain Gary Lineker returned to host the BBC's flagship soccer show on Saturday, a week after his suspension for criticising government immigration policy caused a row over the broadcaster's impartiality rules. BBC managers reversed their decision to suspend Lineker, the broadcaster's highest-paid presenter, after his colleagues refused to work in solidarity last weekend, forcing it to air soccer matches without normal commentary.

The controversy shook the public broadcaster, which is funded by a levy on nearly all British households with televisions, and which often faces accusations of bias from across the political spectrum.

"It was a really difficult situation for everyone concerned," Lineker's co-presenter Alan Shearer said in a short statement to viewers before the start of the BBC's broadcast of an FA Cup quarter-final game between Burnley and Manchester City. "And through no fault of their own, some really great people on TV and in radio were put in an impossible situation, and that wasn't fair. So it's good to get back to some sort of normality and be talking about football again," Shearer said.

Lineker said: "I absolutely echo those sentiments."

Lineker, who has hosted refugees in his home, had been suspended on March 10 for a tweet that called government policy on migration "immeasurably cruel" and compared language used to support it to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

BBC news reporters and current affairs presenters are required to avoid making politically partisan statements, though those guidelines do not generally apply to other staff or to presenters on freelance contracts such as Lineker.

He refused to apologise for his tweet and the opposition Labour Party accused the broadcaster of caving in to government pressure by suspending him. After reinstating Lineker, the BBC said it would review how its impartiality guidelines applied to freelance presenters' use of social media.

Reducing illegal migration is one of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's top policy goals for 2023.

More than 45,000 people - mostly young men from Albania, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq - crossed the Channel in small boats last year, preferring to seek asylum in Britain rather than other countries they had travelled through in Europe.

ALSO READ: Watch: Cristiano Ronaldo's BRILLIANT free-kick goal inspires Al Nassr's win vs Abha in Saudi Pro League "It was a really difficult situation for everyone concerned," Lineker's co-presenter Alan Shearer said in a short statement to viewers before the start of the BBC's broadcast of an FA Cup quarter-final game between Burnley and Manchester City. "And through no fault of their own, some really great people on TV and in radio were put in an impossible situation, and that wasn't fair. So it's good to get back to some sort of normality and be talking about football again," Shearer said. Lineker said: "I absolutely echo those sentiments." Lineker, who has hosted refugees in his home, had been suspended on March 10 for a tweet that called government policy on migration "immeasurably cruel" and compared language used to support it to "that used by Germany in the 30s". Interior minister Suella Braverman has described these arrivals as an "invasion" and is seeking to deport thousands of migrants to Rwanda.

The Spurs fans in the away stand replied by singing, “he’s one of our own”. Monday was the first time that England star Harry Kane appeared on the football pitch after his infamous penalty miss in the World Cup quarterfinal. England crashed out against France after Kane uncharacteristically missed his second penalty of the game which could have given his team lead over the eventual runners-up. "The fans were scared because today he was playing for Tottenham but not for what happened for England. It’s normal. The fans tried to create a problem, but only I think because he was playing for Tottenham and against their team," said the Spurs manager. "When they play national team together they are the best. Then when they start together in the league, the fans find ways to disrupt the other players of the opponents, because in this moment they are a player for the opponent and can hurt your team." However, akin to numerous previous occasions this season, Conte's side managed to rise to the challenge in the second half. Kane led the comeback trail as he headed one to the back of the net past, Raya, into the top-left corner. Afterward, it was Pierre-Emile Højbjerg that netted the equaliser after receiving a carefully crafted pass from Dejan Kulusevski. Spurs currently sit on the fourth spot in the points table with 30 points in 16 games. Manchester United and Liverpool are on the tails of the London-based club with games in hand. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has made a comparison between&nbsp;Marcus Rashford and France superstar Kylian Mbappe.&nbsp;Ten Hag made the rather astonishing comparison at a time when Paris St-Germain (PSG) have shown interest in signing Rashford after the end of his current United contract.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"From the first moment, I recognised huge potential. And now to get out the potential, I believe when Marcus's positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.

"There is Mbappe in this moment, a type like him. But when he (Rashford)'s getting in that position, he's great and you see he's really improved also out of possession," added Ten Hag.&nbsp;

While the Dutch hyped&nbsp;his striker by making the comparison, there have been rumours of Rashford's big-money move to PSG where Mbappe plays.&nbsp;

Last week, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi heaped praises on Rashford and said his club may be on the lookout to avail the services of the 25-year-old.&nbsp;

"He's another player who's amazing and for free? To have Rashford for free, every club will run after him," said&nbsp;Al-Khelaifi

"Maybe summer, why not? If he is a free agent, we can talk to him directly. But we are not going to talk to him now and let him focus on the World Cup. In January, hopefully, we would be interested in talking to him."

According to Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag is willing to trigger a contract extension for Rashford that will allow him to stay at Old Trafford for another one-and-a-half years.&nbsp;

Rashford's current deal expires at the end of the season. Alongside him, other United players such as David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred are also running out of time to sign a new contract. England centre-back Harry Maguire has taken a shot at the match referee post their quarterfinal exit from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Referees at the World Cup have been receiving stick ever since the knockout phase began.

England centre-back Harry Maguire has taken a shot at the match referee post their quarterfinal exit from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Referees at the World Cup have been receiving stick ever since the knockout phase began. After Argentina and Portugal, England have joined the list of countries irked by the decision-making of tournament referees. "I thought the referee’s decision-making throughout the game was really poor. We always stand here, we as players, we get criticised, so it would be nice to see if he comes out and says whether he’s had a good game or not," said Maguire in a post-match TV interview. "There were so many decisions in that first half where France made five, six early fouls. I think [Kane] was outside the box but it was a clear foul," added Maguire. The Manchester United player pointed at how Wilton Sampaio, the referee initially didn't give the penalty in the second half. "He doesn’t initially give the penalty in the second half. The one on Bukayo is a clear foul, leading up to their first goal. Just big moments, big decisions, and you expect a referee to get some right. Unfortunately tonight, he didn’t get any." Notably, similar criticism was levelled by Portuguese players following their 1-0 defeat against Morocco. Portugal's midfield leader Bruno Fernandes said an 'Argentine' referee should not have been allowed to officiate their match. "I don't know if they're going to give the cup to Argentina. I don't care, I'm going to say what I think, and screw them. It's very strange that a referee from a team that's still in the cup officiates us. They've clearly tilted the field against us." Skipper Lionel Messi in an interview took a shot at referee Lahoz who handed as many as 18 yellow cards during the course of the match, setting a new record in the process. "I don’t want to speak about referees because they will sanction you. But people saw what happened. I think FIFA must take care of this. It cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude, of such importance. The referee cannot fail to be up to the task," said Messi. England fullback Kyle Walker has fired the first shots as his potential clash with France forward Kylian Mbappe in the quarterfinal continues to grab headlines. Walker said England will not be obsessing over Mbappe and that he shouldn't expect any red carpets.&nbsp;

England and France square up against each other on Saturday in the knockout game. However, the focus since the fixture was decided has been on the right-side battle between Walker and Mbappe.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Manchester City player said it was a team game and that England's focus will be on other important French players as well.&nbsp;

"I know he's a top player but we're not playing tennis. It's not a solo sport, it's a team game," said the 32-year-old defender.

"We know he's a great player and that's why he's the focus of all questions. But let's not forget (Olivier) Giroud, who has scored countless (goals), (Ousmane) Dembele, for me just as good on the other wing."

"I do understand what I need to do and that's to stop him. It's probably easier said than done but I don't underestimate myself.&nbsp;I've come across great players before so I will just treat it like another game."

Mbappe and Walker previously locked horns against each other while playing for their club sides in the 2021-22 Champions League group stage.

Over the two group encounters, Mbappe managed to find the back of the net once while Walker, for large periods, managed to hold his own.&nbsp;

England fullback Kyle Walker has fired the first shots as his potential clash with France forward Kylian Mbappe in the quarterfinal continues to grab headlines. Walker said England will not be obsessing over Mbappe and that he shouldn't expect any red carpets. "This game isn't England v Mbappe, it's England vs France. We will give respect but I'm not going to roll out a red carpet for him to score. It's do or die as if we lose we go home," said the English defender. England and France square up against each other on Saturday in the knockout game. However, the focus since the fixture was decided has been on the right-side battle between Walker and Mbappe. The Manchester City player said it was a team game and that England's focus will be on other important French players as well. "I know he's a top player but we're not playing tennis. It's not a solo sport, it's a team game," said the 32-year-old defender. "We know he's a great player and that's why he's the focus of all questions. But let's not forget (Olivier) Giroud, who has scored countless (goals), (Ousmane) Dembele, for me just as good on the other wing." England manager Gareth Southgate was full of praise for teenage sensation Jude Bellingham after he lit up the World Cup stage with an electrifying performance against Senegal.

England manager Gareth Southgate was full of praise for teenage sensation Jude Bellingham after he lit up the World Cup stage with an electrifying performance against Senegal. Southgate said Bellingham's maturity could not have been predicted by many. "I don't think we could have predicted how quickly Bellingham could mature. In the last five months that has gone to another level," said Southgate in the post-match presser. Bellingham was instrumental in England netting their first goal of the match. After a tentative start to the game, Senegal started creating a few overloads in the England penalty box and asking questions of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Just when it looked like the African champions would push on the throttle, England through a counterattack, orchestrated by Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Bellingham and Jordan Henderson managed to get their noses ahead. Read more: FIFA World Cup 2022: England cruise past Senegal 3-0 in R-16 to setup quarterfinal date with France It was Bellingham that received a precise pass from Kane who had dropped deep in the midfield. However, the 19-year-old using his physicality and pace managed to beat a few Senegalese defenders and dropped a pinpoint cross in front of Henderson who busted a gut to get into the box and calmly slot the ball to the back of the net. Similarly, for the second goal, it was Bellingham that won the ball high up in the English half and managed to progress it deep into the Senegalese territory and set up Kane for his first goal of the tournament. The English skipper heaped praise on Bellingham and said the teenager had everything going for him. "I think he's a fantastic player. He has everything with and without the ball. He presses really well, gets around the pitch, tackles," said Kane. "With the ball he can run, take players on, play a through ball, and as you saw today he was really important with our goal. I like Jude a lot. He's a really good person. He's mature for his age, got great leadership skills." 'He has gone to another level', says Southgate after Bellingham masterclass against Senegal

England teenage sensation Jude Bellingham set the World Cup stage on fire during the R16 match against Senegal after producing a performance for the ages. No sooner did Bellingham drop his masterclass than rumours started floating of his move to Liverpool. In an interview, when asked about the transfer, the Borussia-Dortmund player shrugged it off with a smirk on his face.&nbsp;

Bellingham and Jordan Henderson were addressing the media after the match where the latter was asked about the 19-year-old's performance.&nbsp;

"I've said it many times, he's a one-off and we need to let him enjoy his football. He is only 19 so let him enjoy playing football. He's been incredible this tournament and for a long period of time at Dortmund..he has carried it to this tournament. Hopefully, he can keep going strength-to-strength. Keep working, keep doing the things he is doing and be the big player for England," said Henderson.

As soon as Henderson completed his answer, a reporter chimed in with a cheeky question, "And Liverpool in the future?"

While Henderson laughed off the question,&nbsp;Bellingham gave a smirk before saying, "You''ve ruined it for all of us."

Both proceeded to move away from the reporters but Bellingham once again added, "You've ruined it man."

Bellingham has been linked to Liverpool for a long time. After the first goal on Sunday where the teenager assisted Liverpool's captain, the duo had a passionate celebration, sending the entire Liverpool fanbase into tizzy if anything was cooking behind the scenes.

The speculation only grew thicker after the match where Bellingham batted for Henderson and said the latter had been unfairly targetted in recent times.

'You've ruined it..." Bellingham on joining Liverpool after superlative World Cup performance

England manager Gareth Southgate believes his team is ready for another penalty shootout, should the round of 16 tie against Senegal on Sunday go the distance.&nbsp;

"We're prepared. We've had a process that we've followed," said Southgate&nbsp;at a pre-match press conference.&nbsp;

Southgate added that his team will like to finish the game in the stipulated time but if it comes to penalty kicks, his troops are 'mentally and physically' prepared for the eventuality.&nbsp;

“We’re aiming to win the game and to avoid extra time if you can, and to avoid penalties if you can, because you’d like to get a victory in 90 minutes."

“But if we need to go 120 minutes, if we need to go beyond that, then we’ve got to be ready for that mentally and physically. And I believe we are."

Southgate also emphasised the fact that England haven't been on-song with their set pieces.

"We haven't been as effective from set-pieces as we would have liked to have been yet, so there's definitely more improvement needed from us on that.

England and penalty shootouts

England's woes with penalty shootouts have been well-documented. The three lions are still&nbsp;nursing the wounds from last year's penalty shootout defeat against Italy at the Euro 2020 Final.&nbsp;

At the time, it was youngsters Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford that failed to put their penalties away - prolonging England's longing of a major trophy since winning the World Cup&nbsp;in 1966.&nbsp;

England will be up against African champions Senegal at the Al Bayt Stadium in Doha. Senegal&nbsp;may be missing its talisman Sadio Mane but the African side has enough firepower in the ranks to nullify the threat of an English charge.

As for Southgate, it will be interesting to observe what tactics he takes into the match. England under Southgate have largely played a conservative brand of football, despite having a vast array of attack-minded footballers.&nbsp;

England, who are gunning for their second World Cup title, have the most valuable squad in Qatar with Jude Bellingham topping a list of over 800 players, a study has found. Here is a look at how the other major sides compare at the tournament:

TRANSFER VALUE

According to a study conducted by Swiss research group CIES Football Observatory, England's 26-man squad is worth just under 1.5 billion euros ($1.54 billion) in transfer value, with 19-year-old Bellingham valued at 202 million euros. The Borussia Dortmund player enhanced his reputation as one of the world's top young players with a superb goal in England's 6-2 victory over Iran in their tournament opener.

Brazil are second on the list with a transfer value of 1.45 billion euros. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. was their most valuable player at 200 million euros. France were third with an estimated transfer value of 1.34 billion for their squad. Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe was their top player with a value of 185 million euros.

The top three were followed by Spain (1.2 billion euros), Portugal (1.15 billion euros) and Germany (1.02 billion euros). The statistical technique used in the study to build the model was multiple linear regression, with fees paid by clubs as an independent variable.

INSURABLE VALUE

According to analysis by Lloyd's of London -- backed by the Centre for Economics and Business Research -- teams were ranked based on the collective insurable value of their players.

England's squad topped the list with an estimated insurable value of 3.17 billion pounds ($3.74 billion). They edged out France (2.66 billion pounds) and Brazil (2.56 billion pounds) to claim top spot. Lloyd's said the assessment of insurable value comprises a variety of metrics like wages, sponsorship, age and on-field positions.

Using this methodology to play out the tournament in full, Lloyd's predicted that England -- champions in 1966 -- will finish top of Group B in Qatar and seal knockout wins over Senegal, France, Spain and Brazil. Bellingham was rated the most insurable player, followed by Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

England adjudged FIFA World Cup's most valuable team, claims a study

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition finally kicked off on Novemebr 20 (Sunday) with an impressive opening ceremony followed by&nbsp;Ecuador easing past hosts Qatar, 2-0, in the tournament opener. On Monday (November 21), Harry Kane-starrer England will be locking horns with Iran and the English team management have confirmed that they will be taking a knee in their tournament opener.&nbsp;

At the pre-match press conference, head coach Southgate, "We have discussed taking the knee," Southgate said. "We feel we should. It's what we stand for as a team and have done for a long period of time. Of course, we understand in the Premier League that clubs have decided to only do that for certain games, big occasions, we feel this is the biggest. "We think it is a strong statement to go around the world for young people in particular to see that inclusivity is very important."

It is to be noted that it is a ritual that England have followed in almost every game following the shocking death of George Floyd in 2020 in US. The national side, however, didn't take the knee in their September fixtures, but will do so at the&nbsp;Khalifa International Stadium against Iran and beyond at the World Cup. They are placed in Group B along with Iran, USA and Wales.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi dwelled on the grim situation of his country before his nation's FIFA WC opener. It isn't a hidden fact that violent anti-government protests in Iran have led to a fierce crackdown in the past few months. Speaking to reporters, the 32-year-old said, "We have to accept that the conditions in our country are not right and our people are not happy. Before anything else, I would like to express my condolences to all of the bereaved families in Iran."

Hajsafi &amp; Co. will be eager to give their countrymen something to cheer for with a spirited performance versus England, who will aim to go the distance after a semi-final exit in the last World Cup and finishing second in Euro 2020.

FIFA World Cup 2022, Day 2 Schedule – Matches, venues and Live streaming-OTT, channel broadcast details!

England, Wales, and five other countries taking part in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 were planning to defy FIFA's guidelines with their captains set to wear 'OneLove' armbands expressing their support for the LGBTQ community. However, the seven countries have now been forced to ditch the move after pressure from FIFA.

England, Wales, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland on Monday announced their captains won't be wearing the special armbands after FIFA warned them of disciplinary action. The football associations of the seven countries released a joint statement expressing their disappointment over the world football governing body's decision.

FIFA had warned the associations that the captain who takes the field with the 'OneLove' armbands will be booked and receive a yellow card even before the start of the game. The yellow card threat has forced these countries to step back as a booking for the captain would affect their results on the pitch.

"FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in Fifa World Cup games," the seven countries said in a joint statement.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play," they added.

The seven countries had written to FIFA earlier this year asking for permission to wear the 'OneLove' armbands to express their support for the LGTQ community. However, their plea was met with no response from FIFA. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, a nation, which has been on the receiving end of intense criticism over its human rights record.

The football associations of the seven countries said they were 'very frustrated' by FIFA's decision and that it has left their players and coaches disappointed.

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."

Reacting to FIFA's yellow card threat to teams planning to go ahead with the special bands, Amnesty International slammed the world football's governing body for failing to uphold its own values and responsibilities by imposing sanctions on teams standing up for a cause.

"Last minute threats to sanction players for wearing messages in support of human rights and equality is the latest example of FIFA failing to fully uphold its own values and responsibilities," said&nbsp;Steve Cockburn, the head of Amnesty International’s&nbsp;Economic and Social Justice.

"Sport does not happen in a vacuum and these are issues on which FIFA should be leading, not cracking down on. Agreements on armbands, and better protections for LGBTI communities, should have been reached a long time ago," he added.

England, Wales & 5 other countries to ditch 'OneLove' armbands in World Cup after FIFA's yellow card warning

England absolutely decimated Iran in their FIFA World Cup 2022 opener to get off to a flying start in the tournament. Bukayo Saka bagged a magnificent brace while the likes of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham, and Jack Grealish scored a goal apiece to help power England to a thumping 6-2&nbsp;win at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Iran were a no match to England's attacking prowess and received a proper hammering as their defence failed to cope with the pace of Saka and Sterling in the first half. After Harry Maguire nearly gave England the lead with his powerful header hitting the cross-bar, Bellingham rose to the occasion to bag his first goal for the country in a World Cup.

The highly-rated midfielder timed his jump to perfection to latch on to a cross from Luke Shaw and beat the Iran keeper comfortably to put his side 1-0 up in the game. Saka scored his first eight minutes later to make it 2-0 before Sterling slotted one home on a cross from captain Harry Kane in the first-half stoppage time.

Saka grabbed his second of the night in the second half as he continued his fine form. The Arsenal youngster made a brilliant run in the Iran box after Sterling found him with a neat pass and slotted it into the bottom left corner to extend England's lead to 4-0 in the 62nd minute.

Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran three minutes later and scored another consolation goal in the stoppage time before the full-time whistle in what was a disappointing night for his country. Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish also managed to get on the scoresheet for England in the second half to hand Iran a proper hammering.

We needed a good start, we didn’t play the best coming into the tournament. But we showed everyone how much quality we have and what we can do," said Saka, England's two-goa hero against Iran.
