The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition finally kicked off in Qatar on November 20. While the mega event was eagerly awaited, a lot of things have made the headlines off the field en route to the tournament's commencement. A lot has been said and written about Qatar's human rights violations and many have slammed the Middle East country, with ex-FIFA President Sepp Blatter also admitting that it was a mistake to award the hosting rights to a country like Qatar.

Nonetheless, the West's reporting of Qatar has made heads turn at regular intervals prior to the FIFA WC's opener. It is to be noted that the BBC relegated the FIFA World Cup opening&nbsp;ceremony to the "Red Button" service and online. However, BBC One went ahead by not airing the ceremony live by maintaining its stance on Qatar's orthodox viewpoint on the LGBTQ community and notorious history of human rights violations.

Is it Western hypocrisy?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently slammed the West's reporting and said in his first press conference in Doha ahead of the World Cup,&nbsp;"This moral lesson-giving -- one-sided -- is just hypocrisy. I don't want to give you any lessons of life, but what is going on here is profoundly, profoundly unjust." He added, "For what we Europeans have been doing for the last 3,000 years we should apologise for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people."

"Today I feel Qatari, today I feel Arab, today I feel African, today I feel gay, today I feel disabled, today I feel a migrant worker," said the FIFA president said while defending Qatar.

It isn't a hidden fact how many Western countries have also been a part of the problem, showing their dominance over developing or poorer countries as well as incidents of racism, slavery, etc. being highlighted for one and all.

It is known that England is taking a knee with regard to supporting the Black Lives Matter movement in the Qatar World Cup. In September 2020, former West Indies pacer Michael Holding slammed England and Australia for choosing when to take a knee. After the West Indies tour of England, where both teams took a knee before proceedings, the then Joe Root-led England didn't take a knee in their following home series versus Pakistan and Australia. Back then, Holding blasted at England Cricket Board (ECB) and Australian captain Aaron Finch while speaking his heart out in Sky Sports.&nbsp;

Holding told, "Now that the West Indies team has gone home, that doesn't mean that you still shouldn't be respecting the message and exactly what it stands for. If you go back to when taking a knee started and what it stood for, or stands for, it goes back to Colin Kaepernick in America, who took a knee because he wanted to bring attention to the racism and police brutality against people of colour in that country.&nbsp; Yes, it is more acute in the United States than in most other places but people around the entire world took on the mantle of spreading the word and getting this message out that it is time for equality and time for equal justice, and all that."

The former pacer said, "So everybody, all over the world, whether you are black, white, brown, pink or green - you saw the demonstrations all over the world. It was no longer just a black versus white thing; it was a matter of humanity coming together and saying 'listen, we need everyone to be treated equally.&nbsp; So for Pakistan and England not to then take that signal - because you are not doing anything other than going down on one knee - you are not chanting anything, you are not saying anything, all you are doing is making a signal to keep the awareness going. Neither team did it and the ECB came out with a pretty lame statement, as far as I am concerned."

The question to be asked here is how come the England football team is taking a knee -- when they do it selectively in Premier League fixtures -- during Qatar World Cup but their senior men's cricket team didn't during their Pakistan tour, T20 World Cup, etc.

Is the West trying to make a statement in Qatar or just adding fuel to fire in a country which already has a troubled history with many human right issues?

Ahead of the match, Southgate told reporters that England will be taking a knee ahead of their face-off versus Iran. "We have discussed taking the knee.&nbsp; We feel we should. It's what we stand for as a team and have done for a long period of time. Of course, we understand in the Premier League that clubs have decided to only do that for certain games, big occasions, we feel this is the biggest. "We think it is a strong statement to go around the world for young people in particular to see that inclusivity is very important," the coach added.

England at FIFA World Cup 2022 – Who made it to Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad?

Harry Maguire seems to have lost the plot at Manchester United as his form continues to slump after a disastrous start to the ongoing season. The United captain was dropped by manager Erik Ten Hag after just a couple of games into the season as Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez formed a solid partnership at the back, helping United remain unbeaten in the Premier League since being deployed as the first-choice centre-back pairing.

Maguire was hoping for a revival after he was picked for England by manager Gareth Southgate, who has continuously backed the Man Utd skipper when it comes to the national team. However, the defender failed to turn a corner as his poor run continued in the Nations League.

Maguire made two costly errors against Germany on Monday resulting in two goals as England had to come from behind to draw 3-3 at Wembley in the Nations League. England ended their campaign in the tournament without a win with Maguire facing intense criticism from all corners for his horror show at the back.

Amid widespread criticism for the England defender, England and Liverpool great Jammie Carragher has urged Maguire to leave United at the end of the season. The former Liverpool defender believes Maguire's time at United is all but over and he should be looking for a way out of Old Trafford.

"My question to Maguire is this: "Do you still have that same fury in you?" Carragher wrote in his column in Daily Telegraph.

"Too often, it looks as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders, like he is a startled bunny more than the authoritative centre-back he was. I think it is too late at club level. I wrote last year he was fighting for his Manchester United career. He needs this to be his final season at Old Trafford and start afresh," he added.

Maguire has been targeted by several United fans on social media over the past few months for his poor performances on the pitch which has also led to the England defender earning sympathy from many. However, Carragher warned Maguire that sympathy is not going to get him anywhere and it is the performances on the pitch that will matter.

"Now it is England's problem. When I watched Maguire in the last two games, I felt sorry for him. But that is not a good look for any sports person.

"Sympathy will not get him back where he was two years ago," wrote Carragher.

Maguire faces a herculean task to regain his spot in United's line-up amid formidable challenges from Varane and Martinez. With the World Cup approaching, it remains to be seen if the England centre-back will manage to turn a corner.

Part one of the healing process is complete for Italy. Looking to regain respect after failing to qualify for a second straight World Cup, the Azzurri advanced to next year's finals tournament in the Nations League by winning at Hungary 2-0 thanks to goals by Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco on Monday.

By topping a group also containing England and Germany, the Italians joined the Netherlands and Croatia in qualifying for the final four, which will be hosted by the Dutch in June. Portugal or Spain will complete the lineup when they face off on Tuesday.

Unlike Italy, England and Germany will be going to the World Cup in Qatar in less than two months and they'll head to the Middle East on the back of a wild 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium, where all the goals were scored in the second half.

Trailing 2-0, England scored three goals in a 12-minute span from the 71st through Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane's penalty only for Kai Havertz to pounce on a fumble by England goalkeeper Nick Pope to equalize in the 87th.

England's winless run stretched to six games, with Gareth Southgate's team finishing its Nations League campaign without a victory and relegated. Germany isn't in much better shape ahead of the World Cup, with just one win in its last seven games.

Italy won Group A3 with 11 points, one more than Hungary, which went into the game in Budapest needing only a draw to reach the Nations League final four for the first time.

The Italians are finding it easier to qualify for Nations League finals than World Cups. They also got to the 2021 tournament, losing to Spain in the semifinals on home soil in their first few months as the reigning European champion.

Plenty has changed in the team since beating England in the European Championship final at Wembley last year, not least up front where Raspadori is making his mark.

Three days after scoring the winner against England in Milan, the Napoli striker put Italy ahead after Adam Nagy's back-pass came up short. They also got to the 2021 tournament, losing to Spain in the semifinals on home soil in their first few months as the reigning European champion. Three days after scoring the winner against England in Milan, the Napoli striker put Italy ahead after Adam Nagy's back-pass came up short. England coach Sarina Wiegman’s news conference after their Womens European Championship win on Sunday was interrupted by her celebrating players, who danced into the room belting out a rendition of the "Three Lionesses" anthem.

Wiegman had just finished answering a question about tactics and where the game was won and lost when the players made their surprise entrance, with goalkeeper Mary Earps leaping onto the table and being joined by defender Lucy Bronze. "We haven't sung this at all, this is something from English culture," Dutchwoman Wiegman told reporters after the interruption.

Women's Euro 2022: England players gatecrash coach Sarina Wiegman's conference after title win - WATCH

Hungary humiliated England 4-0 away on Tuesday to go top of their Nations League group and hand the hosts their worst home defeat for 94 years in a competition Gareth Southgate`s side had hoped would be a morale-boosting warmup for the World Cup. Southgate made nine changes from the team that drew with Italy at the weekend to give some fringe players a chance. But despite dominating possession, England created few chances and the experiment backfired against a Hungary team who beat them in Budapest earlier in the month and were out for blood again.

"Tonight is a chastening experience," Southgate said, after last year`s national heroes as European Championship finalists were booed off at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton. Hungary`s Roland Sallai began the rout when he controlled the ball on his knee after a miscued header from John Stones before drilling past Aaron Ramsdale in the 16th minute.

Sallai scored a second in the 70th minute with a perfect finish with the outside of his boot after Kalvin Phillips lost a tackle. Zsolt Nagy chipped Ramsdale and Daniel Gazdag drove from distance into the corner for two late goals that heaped pain on England. Adding to their disastrous night, England defender Stones was sent off for two yellow cards.

Southgate said he had picked a young, experimental team, heavy on attacking talent, which left his side exposed when the game turned against them. "That`s my responsibility at the end of the day.
We couldn’t keep flogging our best players ... But I think I’ve given too much for them to do tonight. I understand the reaction to that in the stadium," he said.

"I`m not going to say that it doesn`t hurt ... We’ve seen that you’ve got to be at full strength. It was an important experience for young players across this tranche of games. "This group of players have been unbelievable for the country and it’s important that they stay with them," added Southgate, who also led England to a World Cup semi-final in Russia in 2018.

KANE: `NIGHT TO FORGET`
The result left Marco Rossi`s tough Hungary side top of Group A3 on seven points, with England in fourth and bottom spot on two points. Germany are second on six points after winning 5-2 against Italy, who are third on five points. With two games left, the group winners go to the Nations League finals next June while the bottom team are relegated.

England captain Harry Kane, who provided some of England`s few moments of quality and hit the bar with a header, acknowledged his side`s second half capitulation was "unacceptable" but also urged fans to be forgiving.

"It’s our first big defeat in a long time. It`s not time to panic, it’s time to keep our heads up," he said. "A night to forget but we have to take it on the chin and move forward, prepare for a big World Cup, and we’ll learn a lot ... Let’s not forget where we’ve come from. It’s not going to be perfect every game."

After narrowly losing last year`s Euros to Italy, England have high hopes for the Qatar World Cup at the end of this year. But their dismal form in the Nations League has baffled fans, with some pundits pointing to player exhaustion after the rigours of the Premier League and other competitions for many.

It was the first time England had lost a home match by four or more goals since March 1928 when Scotland beat them 5-1. And it was the first time an away team had scored four goals against England since the Hungarians themselves won 6-3 1953. Hungary did not qualify for the World Cup.

Online racist abuse directed towards Black players in the England team after last year`s European Championship final has further complicated preparations for penalty shootouts, England manager Gareth Southgate said.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were the targets of the abuse after they missed spot-kicks in England`s 3-2 shootout loss to Italy after the game ended 1-1 following extra time.

"We went through a process of preparing for penalties. We`ve definitely reviewed that," Southgate told reporters on Monday, ahead of England`s UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

"But indirectly we have created another layer of difficulty in overcoming a penalty shootout. I have got to take all these things into consideration and it is incredibly complex."

Southgate, once the face of English failure for his own penalty miss against Germany in Euro 1996, added that he would not let the potential consequences of a miss sway him when picking penalty takers.

"It wouldn`t be right to not pick the players you think are best ... because of what the possible consequences of them missing would be," Southgate said. "I`ve got to pick them on the belief they are going to score."

England's preparations for penalty shootouts complicated after racial abuse last year, says Gareth Southgate

A second-half penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai earned Hungary a shock 1-0 win over England in the Nations League on Saturday - their first victory against Gareth Southgate's side in 60 years. Looking to get their preparations for the Qatar World Cup, which begins later this year, up and running, England were surprisingly second best from the off in Budapest, and were fortunate to go into the break all square.

The hosts kept coming and made their pressure count as Szoboszlai converted from the penalty spot in the 66th minute after Zsolt Nagy was fouled by Chelsea defender Reece James - a decision which incensed the England players.

England pressed as they looked for a leveller, but they could not create that killer chance as their Nations League campaign got off to a disappointing start. The tests keep coming with Germany England`s next League A, Group Three opponents on Tuesday, while Hungary will look to make it five wins in six when they face European champions Italy.

"We`ve got a massive game coming up on Tuesday," England defender Conor Coady told Channel 4. "We need to look at this performance and learn from it very quickly.

"I thought we started off quite well. We need to tidy up and bounce back. We need to look at how we performed and how we move forward because these are big games for us."

Hungary were forced to host England `behind closed doors` after being disciplined by both FIFA and UEFA for repeated racist behaviour from their fans, but the Hungarian FA said last month that children could attend the match at the Puskas Arena.

Under Article 73 of UEFA`s disciplinary regulations, children up to the age of 14 from schools and/or football academies can be invited to a `behind closed doors` match free of charge, provided they are accompanied by an adult, meaning the stadium could be half full, mostly with children.

Some of those in attendance chose to boo the England players as they took the knee in protest against racial injustice before kick-off. The most unfancied team in Nations League League A, Group Three, Hungary almost gave their youthful support something to shout about early on as Coady was forced to clear off the line after Szoboszlai had bundled the ball towards goal.

England, who handed debuts to West Ham United`s Jarrod Bowen and Leicester City defender James Justin, failed to make any inroads in the first half, as Adam Szalai almost scored a sensational opener from the halfway line.

The visitors improved after the break, with substitute Bukayo Saka seeing an effort well saved, before Hungary did take a deserved lead, but the decision from the Portuguese referee was one that did not sit well with England.
James seemed to lead with his arm, which did catch Nagy, who went down very easily. Szoboszlai`s finish from the spot was emphatic.

England committed more forward after falling behind, with Coady glancing a header agonisingly wide from a free kick. Otherwise, the hosts were comfortable, seeing out their victory, a first in 15 attempts since a win at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, with ease.

Dominik Szoboszlai's penalty earns Hungary first win over England in 60 years

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire had a disastrous season as the club struggled across competitions. United endured a turbulent season where they failed to make it to the knockout stage of the Champions League before finishing a disappointing sixth in the Premier League. It was yet another trophyless season for the Red Devils, who saw former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer getting sacked midway through the campaign before Ralf Rangnick took over in an interim role.

However, the results didn't improve for United even under Rangnick, who publicly criticised players and exposed the woes in the United dressing room while sending several ultimatums to the management and the owners about fixing the issues prevalent at the club.

Maguire found himself on the receiving end of dire criticism after an average campaign. While he was slammed on several occasions on social media and booed by fans on the pitch, the England defender said the 'line' was crossed when his family received a bomb threat for him not giving up United's captaincy.

Maguire alleged a bomb threat had been made to his family in April this year owing to his poor performances on the pitch. The England footballer said he is ready to face criticism which comes along with the pressure of playing for a club like United but said involving his family and issuing a bomb threat was crossing the line.

“Obviously I’m in a position where I’m going to be criticised, Manchester United paid a large sum of money for me, it is one of the most loved clubs in the world and also one of the most hated in the world as well," Maguire told reporters.

“We know we are under the most scrutiny. I totally accept criticism when we concede goals or make mistakes, I’m big enough to accept people getting on my back and saying I can improve. There is a line where we are human beings, I do have a family. People ask if it affects me. My mentality is that it doesn’t affect me too much but when it comes to bomb threats, it is more about family," he added.

Maguire was also booed by a section of English fans after his poor performance in England's friendly against Ivory Coast at Wembley in March this year. The England centre-back said he was left shocked by the reception from the fans as he has enjoyed a great relationship with them since his debut.

“From my England debut, the England fans have been amazing with me, I have had some amazing times. I’ve been involved in some of the biggest games. I have been involved in the biggest games of our country’s recent history," said Maguire.

“The journey I have been on since my debut five years ago to now I have had amazing times with the fans, and I am not going to let the minority, I don’t know how many it was, 10-20 people doing that in the Ivory Coast game to affect my relationship with the England fans, no.

“I think I was more surprised rather than taking it all in, I was a bit shocked to be honest. Like I said, I've had such a good relationship with the England fans throughout my journey with the England team. I wouldn't say I was hurt and upset. Obviously, I know my family and my friends might have been affected by it but I was more surprised really," he added.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire had a disastrous season as the club struggled across competitions. United endured a turbulent season where they failed to make it to the knockout stage of the Champions League before finishing a disappointing sixth in the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate says his England players are "role models" as a row simmered over the team's decision to take the knee at Euro 2020 to highlight the issue of racial injustice.

Southgate's side were booed by a section of the crowd at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium when they made the gesture before friendlies against Austria and Romania last week, though the jeers were drowned out by applause.

Premier League players have been going down on one knee before kick-off since George Floyd, who was black, was killed by a white police officer in the United States last year.

With fans now allowed back in stadiums in England after the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions, some politicians have voiced their opposition to the gesture.

The debate over the issue has provided an unwelcome distraction in the build-up to England's opening game against Croatia on June 13.

All three of England's group matches will take place at Wembley in front of crowds of 22,000 as part of a pilot scheme for the return of supporters.

Southgate, who had previously confirmed his side would continue taking the knee at the delayed European Championship, said the team had an important role to play.

"Our players&nbsp;are&nbsp;role models," the England boss wrote in the Players' Tribune. "And, beyond the confines of the pitch, we must recognise the impact they can have on society.

"We must give them the confidence to stand up for their teammates and the things that matter to them as people. I have never believed that we should just&nbsp;stick to football."

He added: "It's their duty to continue to interact with the public on matters such as equality, inclusivity and racial injustice, while using the power of their voices to help put debates on the table, raise awareness and educate."

Southgate tried to heal a potentially divisive rift among England's support and the players.

"There's something I tell our players before every England game, and the reason that I repeat it is because I really believe it with all my heart," he said.

"I tell them that when you go out there, in this shirt, you have the opportunity to produce moments that people will remember forever.

Football: Southgate's England players are 'role models' as kneeling row simmers

Steven Gerrard said he was surprised by England coach Gareth Southgate's decision to drop Trent Alexander-Arnold from the squad for their World Cup qualifiers and described the Liverpool defender as the "best English right back in the country".

Alexander-Arnold was left out of Southgate's 26-man squad last week for this month's 2022 World Cup qualifying matches against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

The 22-year-old has been a regular in the England squad since breaking into the side ahead of the 2018 World Cup but Southgate said his form had cost him his spot.

Southgate has an abundance of options at right back and named Manchester City's Kyle Walker, Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier and Chelsea's Reece James for the upcoming games.

Rangers manager Gerrard, who spent 17 seasons at Liverpool as a player, said the defender needed support to get him back on track.

"I think Trent is the best English right back in the country," former England midfielder Gerrard told British media.

"One thing I've learnt from being a player is you can't always be 10 out of 10. When you do come off, you need that support, love and attention from your manager more than anyone else.

Gerrard surprised Southgate axed Alexander-Arnold

England football team head coach Gareth Southgate has called out the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> clubs for pressurizing players over their playing time with the national team. Southgate said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> club managers are worried about player fatigue and injuries due to jam-packed schedule.

Southgate further said that the players are keen to play for their country but have been pushed in a “difficult situation” with their clubs. The hectic club fixture along with three matches in seven days for England is a tough task for players. England lost their last match 2-0 against Belgium, ending their hopes of reaching the Nations League final.&nbsp;

“They are under huge pressure from their clubs. That is going on in the background, for sure,” Southgate told reporters ahead of England’s final Nations League group match against Iceland.

“That is the landscape, whether it is made public or not. That is the reality. It manifests itself in different ways but that is what happens.”

England have already lost the likes of Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling as the duo picked up injuries on international duty. Ben Chilwell is also being assessed for a back issue. However, Southgate said that he understands the pressure Premier League managers are in as it is not a two or three clubs title race any more.&nbsp;

“We do not just have two or three clubs in the title race any more, we’re looking at six or seven clubs in England and there is huge pressure on every result,” he added.

“Everybody is looking to try and gain an advantage and if they feel someone else is getting an advantage, they want to make sure their voice is heard as well.

“In terms of the managers, there’s a power game the whole time whether that is phone calls, messages, press conferences -- we know everything that goes on. Everybody is inevitably going to fight their own corner.”

England football team head coach Gareth Southgate has called out the Premier League clubs for pressurizing players over their playing time with the national team. Southgate said that Premier League club managers are worried about player fatigue and injuries due to jam-packed schedule. Southgate further said that the players are keen to play for their country but have been pushed in a “difficult situation” with their clubs. The hectic club fixture along with three matches in seven days for England is a tough task for players. England lost their last match 2-0 against Belgium, ending their hopes of reaching the Nations League final. “They are under huge pressure from their clubs. That is going on in the background, for sure,” Southgate told reporters ahead of England’s final Nations League group match against Iceland. ALSO READ: Club World Cup in Qatar rescheduled for February “That is the landscape, whether it is made public or not. That is the reality. It manifests itself in different ways but that is what happens.” England have already lost the likes of Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling as the duo picked up injuries on international duty. Ben Chilwell is also being assessed for a back issue. However, Southgate said that he understands the pressure Premier League managers are in as it is not a two or three clubs title race any more. “We do not just have two or three clubs in the title race any more, we’re looking at six or seven clubs in England and there is huge pressure on every result,” he added. ALSO READ: Honour to have Cristiano Ronaldo break my record in international football: Ali Daei “Everybody is looking to try and gain an advantage and if they feel someone else is getting an advantage, they want to make sure their voice is heard as well. “In terms of the managers, there’s a power game the whole time whether that is phone calls, messages, press conferences -- we know everything that goes on. Everybody is inevitably going to fight their own corner.”

Gareth Southgate: England players under massive pressure from clubs over playing time

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling will miss England's Nations League fixture against Iceland on Wednesday, the Football Association has announced.

Liverpool captain Henderson suffered a knock during Sunday's loss away to Belgium, while Manchester City forward Sterling has withdrawn because of a calf problem.

An FA statement issued Monday said the two players had returned to their respective clubs for further assessment.

England manager Gareth Southgate will now continue his preparations for his side's final game of the year with a 22-man squad.

England's Henderson and Sterling out of Iceland match

Gareth Southgate admitted he was impressed with Jack Grealish as the England winger sparkled and Harry Maguire enjoyed a moment of redemption in Thursday's 3-0 friendly win against the Republic of Ireland.

Just 48 hours after the resignation of English Football Association chairman Greg Clarke following his offensive comments about the BAME and LGBT communities, Southgate's side showed no signs of being distracted by the controversy.

After being sent off in his previous England appearance against Denmark, Maguire captained his country for the first time and scored the opening goal at Wembley.

It was a welcome boost for Maguire, who has endured a difficult campaign marred by his Greek court case and poor form for Manchester United and England.

Jadon Sancho bagged England's second goal before the interval and Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it three with a second-half penalty.

That was enough to seal England's first success against the Republic since 1985.

Grealish, starting against the country he represented at youth level, caught the eye on the left flank as he justified the constant calls from fans and pundits for the Aston Villa star to be given a sustained run in the team.

"The two players in those roles, Jadon and Jack, they've got the freedom to go either side of the pitch and try and create overloads," Southgate said.

"I thought at times both of them did that really well. Of course, as soon as they are turned and running at people, they are a real problem for the opponent."

There was a landmark moment for Jude Bellingham, who became the third youngest player to represent England when the 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder came on for Mason Mount in the 73rd minute.

Bellingham, who left Birmingham to join Dortmund earlier this year, is behind only Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney in the list of England's youngest players.

The teenager is one for the future, but Southgate will have been more encouraged by the way his understudies impressed after he rested Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson before the Nations League games against Belgium on Sunday and Iceland next Wednesday.

"I was very pleased with the way the boys played. A lot of young players, a lot of inexperienced players, we used the ball very well, created a lot of chances, could have been more comfortable if we'd taken some of those chances but overall very pleased," Southgate said.

"We were a bit slow at the start but that's understandable. It's not a team that have had a lot of time to work together.

"The longer they went on, some of the interplay, some of the play between our attacking 10s and our wing-backs in particular was very good."

Southgate had urged England to put the focus back on football after Clarke's self-inflicted demise triggered a "turbulent week" and his team were always in control in their first meeting with the Republic since 2015.

<h2>- Temporary reprieve -</h2>

Maguire put England ahead in the 18th minute when Harry Winks crossed back into the area and the defender rose above Shane Duffy to head past Darren Randolph for his second goal in an England shirt.

Sancho has been struggling to find his peak form for Borussia Dortmund this season, but the winger showed his quality to double England's lead in the 31st minute.

Grealish teed him up on the left side of the Ireland area and Sancho shifted the ball onto his right foot before curling a low strike past Randolph.

Bukayo Saka won a penalty in the 56th minute when he wriggled past Cyrus Christie, who responded with a clear trip on the Arsenal wing-back.

Everton striker Calvert-Lewin stroked the spot-kick high into the roof of the net for his second England goal.

Manchester United's Dean Henderson had come on for his England debut at half-time, replacing Nick Pope in goal, but he was barely tested as the hosts cruised to the final whistle.

Maguire, Grealish shine as England sink Republic of Ireland

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has apologised for the embarrassment caused by his breach of coronavirus regulations while on England &nbsp;duty in Iceland.

The 18-year-old said he had learned a lesson from the incident, which resulted in his being dropped from the squad for Tuesday's Nations League match in Denmark, along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.

England manager Gareth Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the breach but media reports said the pair left the bio-secure bubble to meet two local girls.

Both players have been fined 250,000 Icelandic krona ($1,800, £1,350) by Reykjavik police and the Football Association said it would be launching a full investigation.

"Having now had the chance to reflect on what's happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused," Greenwood said in a statement.

"It was irresponsible of me to break the Covid-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

"In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down when he had shown great trust in me."

Greenwood added: "Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

"I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."

Foden, 20, issued an apology on social media on Monday, saying he would learn a "valuable lesson".

England's Greenwood sorry for coronavirus breach

Gareth Southgate branded Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood "naive" after the England pair were sent home for a "serious" breach of coronavirus protocols in Iceland.

England manager Southgate responded to the breach by removing Manchester City midfielder Foden and Manchester United forward Greenwood from his squad for Tuesday's Nations League clash in Denmark.

Foden, 20, and Greenwood, 18, had made their senior England debuts in Saturday's 1-0 win against Iceland, but the pair will have to travel home separately from the rest of the squad, who were due to move on to Denmark on Monday.

Although Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the virus protocol breach, widespread media reports said the England pair met two local girls during their time in Iceland.

"Unfortunately this morning it was brought to my attention that the two boys have broken the Covid guidelines in terms of our secure bubble," Southgate told reporters.

"We had to decide they couldn't have interaction with the rest of the team and wouldn't be able to train. Given the procedures we have to follow now, they will have to travel back to England separately."

A Snapchat video released in Iceland appeared to show the players with female company.

Reports said Foden and Greenwood had brought the girls back to England's team hotel, but Southgate said that was not the case.

"Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the hotel. We are still getting to the depths of all the information because this was only brought to my attention a couple of hours before training, so I'm still getting to grips with the detail," he said.&nbsp;

"What is clear is there is a breach of the Covid-19 guidelines. I'm not gong into any more details until I'm aware of everything."

Southgate's scheduled media briefing was delayed by an hour as he and the Football Association scrambled to manage the situation, which the England boss only became aware of just hours earlier.

Acknowledging their antics were unacceptable given the current global concern about the coronavirus, Southgate said: "It is a very serious situation and we have treated it that way. They have been naive and we have dealt with it appropriately.

"We are not underestimating how important it is we keep the bubble the way we have."

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Totally inappropriate' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Southgate said both players had apologised for their behaviour, but conceded they should have acted more responsibly.

"I recognise their age, but of course, the whole world is dealing with this pandemic and there is a responsibility on all ages that they do their part," he said.

"These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so I cannot speak in great depth. I've got to try to speak with them later in the appropriate way.&nbsp;

"They have apologised but everything has happened so quickly and we have to get to the facts."

Asked if Foden and Greenwood, regarded as two of England's brightest young stars, would now face a battle to regain their place in the squad, Southgate added: "All of those things are too early, until I'm totally aware of every situation.&nbsp;

"I'm a father of young adults and I know they can get things wrong. We are not excusing that in this instance and we have to asses everything else moving forward."

City labelled their player's actions "totally inappropriate" and calling his behaviour "well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player".

United said of Greenwood: "We are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation."

The controversy was the last thing Southgate needed after he had to withdraw Harry Maguire from the squad following the Manchester United defender's part in a brawl in Greece.

Maguire was handed a suspended prison sentence and is appealing the verdict.

"All management roles are difficult and this is another level, in terms of what you have to deal and what is expected," Southgate said.

England's Foden, Greenwood sent home after 'naive' virus breach

France face a major hurdle if they are to add the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wales-qualifies-for-euro-2020-belgium-netherlands-germany-secure-victories-in-final-qualifying-clash-263291">European Championship </a>to their World Cup crown after coming out in the same Euro 2020 group as Germany and reigning European champions Portugal in Saturday's draw in Bucharest.

Neither France nor Portugal were in Pot One for the 24-team competition being held in 12 cities across Europe, making them the dangerous teams to avoid for the top seeds.

In the event, they were all put together in a high-calibre Group F alongside Germany, who will play all their group games in Munich. That is where Joachim Loew's team will face France in their first match on June 16 and then Portugal on June 20.

"It is the hardest group, but we must accept it. It means we will have to be ready right away," said France coach Didier Deschamps.

Group F will be completed by one of the winners of the play-offs to be played next March, leaving open several possibilities including Hungary, who will play two games in Budapest should they make it.

France beat Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 on home soil, before slumping in the final against Portugal.

With the four best third-placed sides all going through, it is very possible all three will progress to the last 16, but Loew is in no doubt France -- who followed their 1998 World Cup triumph by winning Euro 2000 -- are the strongest team.

"They are the world champions and have been getting stronger for the last three or four years. They are the group favourites," he said.

Home advantage?&nbsp;

Meanwhile, England were drawn with Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D, with Gareth Southgate's team to play group games at Wembley, which will also host the semi-finals and the July 12 final.

That group will be completed by the team to emerge victorious from Path C in the play-offs -- either Serbia, Norway, Israel and Scotland. The latter have the added incentive of knowing they will play two games in Glasgow in the group stage should they qualify.

England faced the Czechs in qualifying, winning 5-0 at Wembley but suffering their only defeat of the campaign in Prague, losing 2-1 in October.

England will kick off at home to Croatia on June 14 in a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, which was won by the Croatians.

However, should England win their group they will have to play the Group F runners-up, setting up a possible clash with Germany, France or Portugal in the last 16.

Even if they win that, the draw is such that they could end up facing Spain in the quarter-finals.

When asked about the advantage of playing at Wembley, Southgate said: "Obviously eight or 10 teams have the advantage of home group matches, and we have only ever been to one semi-final so that doesn't become an advantage unless we get through two very complicated knockout matches as well. That is a long way down the line."

Southgate famously missed a penalty when England lost to Germany in a shootout at Wembley in the Euro 96 semi-finals, the last time they played a match at home in the tournament.

Wales head to Baku&nbsp;

Italy will face Turkey in Rome in the tournament's opening game on June 12, with Switzerland and Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales also in that section, Group A.

Wales will play two matches in far-flung Baku, starting with Switzerland on June 13. They played there this month, and won, against Azerbaijan in a qualifier.

"Obviously come the championships it will be six or seven months down the line but we know what to expect, the facilities were fantastic there, and I think it's also great for the fans that they have got two games there," said Wales boss Ryan Giggs.

Spain will play Sweden and Poland as well as a play-off winner in Group E, with Luis Enrique's team playing in Bilbao.

Finland will face two hosts, Denmark and Russia, as well as much-fancied Belgium in Group B at what will be their first Euro.

The Netherlands, on the rise after missing Euro 2016 and the last World Cup, face Ukraine and Austria along with another play-off winner in Group C.

Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest and Dublin will also host matches after UEFA decided to spread the Euro across the continent to mark the 60th anniversary of the first tournament in 1960.

Heavyweights France, Germany and Portugal drawn together for Euro 2020

England manager Gareth Southgate has said his players will not walk off the pitch in protest if they are racially abused by supporters following discussions with his squad and staff.

England's 5-1 rout of Montenegro in Podgorica in March was soured by racist abuse from fans and the hosts were ordered to play their next European competition match behind closed doors as part of sanctions handed out by UEFA.

Southgate said he discussed the matter with England internationals, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=raheem+sterling">Raheem Sterling</a>, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi and the players agreed that walking off would shift the focus to them rather than the issue of racism.

"They are clear they don't want the story at the end to be about them as individuals," Southgate told reporters on Thursday as he announced his squad for next month's UEFA Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands.

"They want football to be the story.

"In terms of walking off the pitch, that isn't something they're all on board with. None of the current team has expressed that as a preference... But they have had an opportunity to speak (publicly) and have an impact that way."

Sterling, who had also <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/raheem-sterling-wins-football-writers-award-214414">been allegedly racially abused when playing for Manchester City</a> at Chelsea, had last month signed a manifesto that called for consistent punishment for racist and discriminatory behaviour, including automatic nine-point deductions.

Southgate added that walking off the pitch would be nothing more than a "symbolic statement" which would not necessarily lead to reform.

"The bit that isn't clear to me if we did that -- apart from the question of whether we would be penalised -- is what would happen then?" Southgate added. "It would be a statement, but what would that lead to?

"There are lots of statements that have been made and haven't led to change and reform. For me, the broader discussion around racism, education is key.

"A lot of our players and former players have spoken brilliantly about that in recent months. I don't think we need any more symbolic statements that this is unacceptable."

England play the Netherlands on June 6 in Guimaraes and face either hosts Portugal or Switzerland in the Nations League final or go into a third place playoff on June 9.

Sterling, who had also been allegedly racially abused when playing for Manchester City at Chelsea, had last month signed a manifesto that called for consistent punishment for racist and discriminatory behaviour, including automatic nine-point deductions. I don't think we need any more symbolic statements that this is unacceptable." England play the Netherlands on June 6 in Guimaraes and face either hosts Portugal or Switzerland in the Nations League final or go into a third place playoff on June 9.

England will not walk off pitch for racist abuse, says Gareth Southgate

After being cheered to the Wembley rafters during the 5-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic, manager Gareth Southgate expects his young England side to face a more hostile 90 minutes in their second Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro on Monday.

The team from the small Balkan state have made life uncomfortable for England before at home and Southgate knows that is likely to be the case again in the Group A clash in Podgorica.

Southgate said he trusted his youngsters to cope, however, and the match would be an important part of their learning curve.

"No hesitation," Southgate told a news conference when asked if he would have any reservations about fielding players such as 18-year-old Jadon Sancho, who started against the Czechs, and Declan Rice and Callum Hudson-Odoi who made substitute cameos on Friday.

"This is part of their education and to be a top team we've got to adapt to every environment we go into.

"Friday at Wembley is always a different experience to going away from home in a qualifier, which is always difficult."

With Eric Dier ruled out through injury, meaning West Ham's Rice, who earned his first England cap on Friday having been permitted to switch allegiance from Ireland, could be in line for a first start in the heart of midfield.

"The make-up of the side will get the best out of the players we have here and available and I think we will have a very strong team out," Southgate said.

"Declan came into the game the other night, which was a great way for him to gain some experience of international football. I would have no hesitation in starting him."

Montenegro earned draws in their previous home games against England in 2010 and 2013 but their manager Ljubisa Tumbakovic said he could find no weaknesses in Southgate's in-form side.

"I'm really trying but I can't," he said. "We in the coaching team who deal with the players are realistic.

"Things that happen in the past are just nice results for Montenegro; tomorrow we will play a match with totally different players, new coaches, with different capabilities and different ideas from both teams.

"The model and the way the (England) national team plays is something special."

England have actually won only one of their four meetings with Montenegro -- 4-1 at Wembley in 2013.

Euro 2020 qualifier: Gareth Southgate says youngsters will handle hostile Montenegro atmosphere

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier has blamed injuries for his lack of form this season and the right back said he is aware of the competition for spots in England's back line for their Euro qualifiers this month.

England boss Gareth Southgate named three right backs in his squad for matches against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, and Trippier was called up despite being sidelined with injury since a 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal this month.

"I could have done a lot better this season. I've picked up a lot of injuries," Trippier told reporters ahead of England's Euro 2020 qualifier against Czech Republic.

"There is a lot of competition. Me, Trent (Alexander-Arnold), Kyle (Walker), and you've got (Aaron) Wan-Bissaka playing really well for (Crystal) Palace.

"But I'm here now, and I need to impress to try and start for England and do the best I can between now and the end of the season."

Trippier, who was England's first choice wing back at the World Cup in Russia, has struggled to hit the same heights in Tottenham's campaign having had less than a month to rest before the new season got underway last August.

"There have been games when I've looked back and thought, 'I could have done this or that better,'" Trippier added.

"People say coming back from the World Cup and going straight back into it again is the reason but I don't think it is. You pick up injuries.

"It would have been nice to have an extra week or something but the season came around early, so you've just got to get on with it."

Tottenham's Kieran Trippier looks to regain form with England

Eric Dier believes England should maintain their combative approach as they progress under manager Gareth Southgate after the side "laid down a marker" with an impressive victory over Spain in the UEFA Nations League this week.

England stunned their hosts 3-2 in Seville on Monday after Dier had set the tone for a brilliant first-half performance from the visitors with some feisty challenges on Sergio Busquets and Sergio Ramos in the opening 15 minutes.

Dier was shown a yellow card for his lunging tackle on Spain captain Ramos but the Tottenham midfielder said it was important to ensure Spain were knocked out of their rhythm early on.

"Once we start the game, it's every man for himself and we have to put our foot down, put a marker down," Dier told British media. "We have to be aggressive, be on the front foot and show that nothing is going to intimidate us.

"Ramos is a great example. He does everything so well but at the same time he puts his foot down and he's not going to be bullied. We have to be the same way."

Southgate's side are building a reputation as a possession-based outfit but Dier reckons the ability to win physical battles will be equally as important to their long-term prospects.

"It's just a question of being smart at the right times," Dier added. "Obviously it was frustrating Spain, frustrating the crowd. I think it's just maturity, really, knowing when to win fouls, when to take your time."

England must always take fight to opposition, says Dier
