General Motors halts advertising on Twitter temporarily after Musk's takeover

<p>Elon Musk created a lot of uproar back in April when he announced his plans to buy Twitter. Many people, including several celebrities, threatened to boycott the popular microblogging site. Now, he really is the master of Twitter having&nbsp;acquired the company for $44 billion, and changed his Twitter bio to 'Chief Twit' and grandly tweeted, "the bird is freed."<br />
<br />
His fans are ecstatic. But many have announced doom and gloom, saying, among other things, that under Musk there will be more hate speech, particularly from the right, and less accountability. It does not help that Donald Trump has hailed Musk's Twitter takeover. Some have deactivated their accounts and quit the platform or are threatening to quit. After Musk's Twitter takeover, celebs threaten to quit social media site: 'Not sure what the point is'

<p>Just a few hours after Elon Musk launched a new era at Twitter Inc., the billionaire owner received a barrage of requests and pleadings from users with banned accounts and international leaders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The influx of requests highlights the difficulty facing Tesla Inc.'s CEO in combining his commitment to restore free speech with his pledge to stop the platform from turning into a "hellscape" in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday.<br />
<br />
Musk announced that he plans to set up a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints” at Twitter after taking over the social media company, stressing that no changes to the platform’s moderation policies have been made so far.</p>

<p>“No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes,” the billionaire businessman said.</p>

<p>The takeover was hailed, but former US President Donald Trump, who was permanently banned from Twitter following the riots on January 6, 2021, said little about making a comeback. “I'm relieved that Twitter is finally being governed by rational people and is no longer being controlled by radical leftist lunatics and maniacs who genuinely despise our nation,” Trump said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Russian President and current Vice-Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev tweeted his congratulations: "Good luck @elonmusk in overcoming political bias and ideological dictatorship on Twitter. And quit that Starlink in Ukraine business."</p>

<p>Others begged Musk to undo punishments meted out by the social networking site.<br />
<br />
Musk tweeted, "I will be digging in more today," in response to @catturd2, an anonymous account with 852,000 followers who is well-known for strongly endorsing Trump's claims of election fraud.&nbsp;</p>

Meanwhile, the social media platform's shares have been suspended from trading on Friday, according to the New York Stock Exchange's website. × Earlier, Musk reasoned that he bought Twitter to help humanity and wanted "civilisation to have a common digital town square". There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society," Musk further added. "In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost," Musk said. Earlier this week, the world’s richest man tweeted a video of himself walking into Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco carrying a kitchen sink with the caption, "Let that sink in!" He also changed his Twitter profile to read "Chief Twit". (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

‘Let the good times roll’: Musk says after becoming the new Twitter boss

<p>Former US President Donald Trump on Friday (October 28) welcomed billionaire Elon Musk's purchase of social media platform Twitter. He said that he was pleased the platform was "now in sane hands." Musk concluded his bid to buy Twitter for USD 44 billion on Thursday after uncertainty and speculation that lasted for months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.</p>

<p>Elon Musk, chief of Tesla and SpaceX, has already indicated that he would lift Twitter's ban on Trump. The platform had suspended Trump's account after January 6, 2021 riots on Capitol Hill which saw Trump supporters attacking US Capitol building. Trump was famous for his off the cuff tweets which even entered the realm of politics and policy-making, all while he himself was the US President.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Friday, though Trump welcomed Musk's acquisition of Twitter, he did not indicate whether he would want to make a comeback on the platform.</p>

<p>The prospect of Musk running Twitter has alarmed activists who fear a surge in harassment and misinformation, with Musk himself known for trolling other Twitter users.</p>

Watch: Elon Musk changes Twitter bio to 'Chief Twit', enters HQ with sink in hand

<p>A report by Reuters citing the New York Stock Exchange's website said that trading in shares of Twitter Inc will be suspended on Friday. This comes as billionaire Elon Musk is nearing the takeover of the social media company.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the days leading up to the Friday deadline, Musk changed his Twitter bio to “Chief Twit,” and visited Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday. He also took to the microblogging platform and posted a video of himself with the caption “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the banks have vowed to back Musk’s acquisition and other equity investors have also reportedly received requisite paperwork for the financial commitment from his lawyers. The deal is now expected to be completed on its original $54.20 per share terms which will also mark the end of a lawsuit by Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after the stocks of the social media company dipped in July facing a four-month low following Musk’s termination of the deal to buy the company. He alleged that Twitter had misrepresented the number of spam and fake bot accounts on its platform, violating their mutual purchase agreement.&nbsp;</p>

A report by Reuters citing the New York Stock Exchange's website said that trading in shares of Twitter Inc will be suspended on Friday. This comes as billionaire Elon Musk is nearing the takeover of the social media company. In the days leading up to the Friday deadline, Musk changed his Twitter bio to “Chief Twit,” and visited Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday. He also took to the microblogging platform and posted a video of himself with the caption “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!”. The deal is now expected to be completed on its original $54.20 per share terms which will also mark the end of a lawsuit by Twitter. This comes after the stocks of the social media company dipped in July facing a four-month low following Musk’s termination of the deal to buy the company. He alleged that Twitter had misrepresented the number of spam and fake bot accounts on its platform, violating their mutual purchase agreement. Gravitas: Elon Musk's secret to staying 'fit & healthy'

<p>Even though there is still time before he finalises the $44billion acquisition deal, Elon Musk seems to be in the mood to make major changes to how the Twitter app would function once he takes over.</p>

<p>In a tweet, the 51-year-old billionaire indicated that the microblogging site might host a built-in video feature to compete with the likes of YouTube, in a bid to shore up additional revenues for the app.</p>

<p>Responding to a Twitter thread about how this might be executed, Musk posted a winking face emoji.</p>

<p>“Once @elonmusk takes over, I wonder if @TwitterSpaces platform can evolve towards video and compete with @YouTube for content creation…” the Twitter thread read.</p>

<p>“It is insane that Twitter has not currently implemented a YouTube clone. Half my tweets are links to YouTube videos. Twitter does not capture any value here. If users could watch monetised videos on Twitter, Twitter would capture ad revs and massively increase [revenues].”</p>
