'Yup', says Elon Musk when user claims Twitter employees asked for USD 15k for blue tick

As Twitter began unrolling its 'paid' blue tick, Olivier Veran, French minister and government spokesperson, said on Sunday (November 6) that he will not pay USD 7.99 a month fee for account verification. He added that he had concerns about ambitions of the social media platform's new owner Elon Musk.

On Saturday, Twitter began updating its app in Apple's App Store and started charging for the blue checkmarks. This is first major revision since Musk took over on October 28.

Twitter said those who "sign up now" can receive the checkmark next to their user names, "just like the celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow".

"I invite them to decertify my account without delay if they consider that this is something that one has to start paying for," Veran told France 3 television.

Before Musk took over, a blue checkmark next to a user name meant Twitter had confirmed the account belonged to the person or company claiming it.

Veran even said he was not sure he would continue to use Twitter following Musk's takeover. He agreed that it was a major communication tool but added, "The fact that this major global tool belongs to one man, and that he displays ambitions that worry me a bit - at least some of them - means that I will remain vigilant and that I will take my own responsibilities if necessary."

Morning news brief: Biden slammed for coal comments, UN writes letter to Musk and more

Twitter's co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey has now issued an apology and said sorry for 'growing the company too quickly and that led to the mass lay-offs'. He owned the responsibility for putting people in this situation.

Twitter tussle: Former CEO Jack Dorsey apologises to staff

Under the ownership of Elon Musk, Twitter Inc. has started to lay off staff members. As many as 3,700 employees, or half of its workforce, were sacked by the San Francisco-based social media company on Friday. A class action lawsuit has already been filed against Twitter on the grounds that the impending layoffs will be illegal under US and California law if employees are not given early warning or severance compensation.

What does the US law say?

Businesses with 100 or more employees are required by the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act to give 60 days' notice before initiating mass layoffs. According to the legislation, mass layoffs are those that affect at least 500 workers over the course of 30 days, or at least 50 workers if the layoffs affect at least one-third of a company's employment. Instead of giving notice, employers may offer 60 days of severance compensation to employees.

Warn Act violations are subject to what penalties?

If an employer is determined to have broken the WARN Act, they may be required to pay the laid-off employees 60 days' worth of back pay. Additionally, there are fines of $500 each day of infringement under the legislation. Similar punishments are imposed by comparable legislation in California and other states.

Accusations against Twitter

According to the complaint, which was submitted late on Thursday to a federal court in San Francisco, Twitter locked off its employees' accounts on that day, indicating that they would soon lose their employment. A California-based plaintiff who is one of the five listed plaintiffs claims he was fired on November 1 without warning or severance compensation.

‘Blood bath’ begins at Twitter as several employees across verticals laid off in India

Ahead of the reported layoffs at Twitter, some users were unable to access the microblogging website on Friday morning.

While the app users didn’t find any lag, the web users were prompted with "Something went wrong, but don't worry - try again" popup while trying to log in to Twitter.

It said that the ‘problem’ was only with the desktop version of Twitter rather than the app.

The limited outage started around 3 am and saw a relatively big spike around 7 am. The DownDetector Map indicated that the users in very few parts of India were facing problems with the social networking site.

While the app users didn’t find any lag, the web users were prompted with "Something went wrong, but don't worry - try again" popup while trying to log in to Twitter. It seems that the Elon Musk-owned site was suffering from an outage in a few parts of the world, according to DownDetector, the site that keeps track of outages on websites. It said that the ‘problem’ was only with the desktop version of Twitter rather than the app. The limited outage started around 3 am and saw a relatively big spike around 7 am. The DownDetector Map indicated that the users in very few parts of India were facing problems with the social networking site.
Twitter will alert its employees via email by 9 AM PST on Friday about whether they have been fired or not, said an internal memo copy obtained by Insider. The email also said that Twitter offices will be closed as well as all badge access will be suspended in order to ensure the “safety” of the employees as well as “Twitter systems and customer data.”

“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” said the email. It added, “We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward.”

The note reportedly also said that they want to inform the “impacted individuals as quickly as possible” therefore the news will be communicated via email. It added, “If your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email.” On the other hand, if it has "impacted" their employment they would be notified regarding their next steps via their personal email.

Elon Musk promised advertisers to protect his new purchase, Twitter from becoming a 'free-for-all hellscape."

The advertising companies have started to show concern over Musk's leadership of how he will deal with spreading false information and hate.
