<p>Twitter is about to withdraw from one of European Union's attempts to combat disinformation, as per a Politico report.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;two people with direct knowledge of the matter who were granted anonymity to speak about internal discussions between the company and the European Commission,&nbsp;the social networking giant&nbsp;owned by Elon Musk&nbsp;is expected to end its participation in the bloc's code of practice on&nbsp;disinformation in the coming days.</p>

<p>The code of conduct is a voluntary regulation that was updated last year and makes it an obligation for firms like Twitter, Meta, and Alphabet to track political advertising, limit the monetisation of disinformation, and provide outsiders more access to these platforms.</p>

<p>While participation in the code is voluntary, it was supposed to help offset some of these companies' duties under the separate, and required, Digital Services Act — new social media restrictions that entail fines of up to six per cent&nbsp;of a company's annual sales.</p>

<p>According to an EC official, because the code of practice was optional, it was up to individual enterprises to decide whether or not to join. Twitter had not met its commitments under the code thus far, according to the spokeswoman.</p>

<p>A poop&nbsp;emoji was provided in response to an email submitted to Twitter for feedback, reported Politico.</p>

<p>Twitter is anticipated to withdraw as a so-called co-signatory of the code of practice early next week once Musk formally signs off, a source told Politico.</p>

On Thursday, Elon Musk announced yet another feature that will allow Twitter Blue subscribers to upload two-hour-long videos. Taking to Twitter, Musk said, "Twitter Blue Verified subscribers can now upload 2-hour videos (8GB)!" This is a big change as Twitter Blue earlier allowed videos of 60 minutes to subscribers. Meanwhile, non-Blue subscribers will only be able to upload videos up to a length of 140 seconds.</p>

<p>It was interesting to see that as soon as Musk announced the feature, it resulted in some of the users uploading pirated movies on the social media platform.&nbsp;After the feature became available, a Twitter user posted <em>Shrek 3\</em> movie in full. However, it seems like the movie was later taken down by Twitter and went inaccessible. It displayed a message: "This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As cool as the new feature sounds, some users may have significant concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Twitterati react on new feature</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>After the game-changing upgrade which may enhance monetisation for Twitter, a barrage of comments flooded the microblogging website. On one hand, Twitterati was cheered up with the move while on the other hand, many rebuked the new feature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Long videos are good, and I hope you focus on them as an alternative to YouTube. Short videos are bad. I hope you don't imitate tik tok, shorts and reels," added another.</p>

<p>Appreciating the move, a user wrote, "For someone like me who uploads a lot of videos this is a big deal! size and time limits have been a big headache historically. Excited to share more on Twitter and depend less on YouTube."</p>

<p>While he is accustomed to "offensive, personal, ad hominem attacks, up to and including direct physical threats", he told AFP, "in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at&nbsp;Twitter, the amount, vituperativeness, and intensity of abuse has skyrocketed".</p>

<h2><strong>Climate&nbsp;tweets decline&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Robert Rohde, a physicist and lead scientist at the non-profit environmental data analysis group Berkeley Earth, analysed activity on hundreds of accounts of widely followed specialists posting about&nbsp;climate&nbsp;science before and after the takeover.</p>

<p>He found&nbsp;climate&nbsp;scientists' tweets were losing impact. The average number of likes they received was down 38 per cent and average retweets fell 40 per cent.</p>

<p>Twitter&nbsp;has not commented directly about what changes it has made to the algorithms that drive traffic and visibility.</p>

<p>Contacted at its email address for comment, its press department returned its now customary reply, an automated email with a "poop" emoji.</p>

<p>Replies from apparent trolls or bots increased 15 to 30 times over a two-month period compared to the previous two years, Hayhoe tweeted in January 2023.</p>

<p>"Before October, my account was growing steadily at a rate of at least several thousand new followers a month. Since then, it has not changed," she told AFP.</p>

<h2><strong>Scientists</strong>&nbsp;leaving&nbsp;<strong>Twitter</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Andrew Dessler, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&amp;M University, said he was moving most of his&nbsp;climate&nbsp;communication to Substack, a newsletter platform.</p>

<p>"Climate&nbsp;communications on&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;are less useful (now) given that I can see that my tweets are getting less engagement," he said.</p>

<p>"In response to almost any tweet concerning&nbsp;climate&nbsp;change, I find my notifications inundated with replies from verified accounts making misleading or misguided claims."</p>

<p>Others have abandoned&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;altogether.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the event would be hosted at 6 pm ET (22.00 GMT) and the session will be moderated by tech entrepreneur David Sacks, a Musk confidant.</p>

<p>This is the first time that such an announcement is being made on social media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This event has renewed a debate about Elon Musk's political leanings. It has also raised whether Twitter will no more be a neutral arbiter, and whether will it take sides with the DeSantis link.</p>

"I don't care," said Musk during a CNBC interview, adding, "I'll say what I want to say and if the consequence of that is losing money, so be it." However, during a court testimony later, Musk clarified that his price offer wasn't meant to be a marijuana reference. “420 was not chosen because of a joke; it was chosen because there was a 20 per cent premium over the stock price," said Musk, adding, "There is some, I think, karma around 420. I should question whether that is good or bad karma at this point."
