Elon Musk-led Tesla closed down its flagship showroom in China last week in an effort by the electric vehicle giant to adjust sales and service strategy amid ongoing Covid-related restrictions in the country. The showroom, Tesla’s first in China, was opened in 2013 and had been operational in Beijing’s Parkview Green, an upscale downtown shopping centre of Chinese capital.

“Their contract with us expired and Tesla decided not to extend it,” a member of the staff at Beijing's Parkview Green was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Across China, authorities are aiming to drive down the number of Covid-19 cases by imposing strict lockdowns, closing borders and imposing travel bans, a strategy codified by Beijing as 'zero Covid policy'. The policy, although deemed largely successful in keeping Covid spread under check in China, has hurt businesses due to movement-related restrictions.

Tesla had renovated the now-closed showroom in 2018 by expanding it further to occupy two floors of Parkview Green mall. However, despite significant investments in renovation, the Texas-headquartered company decided not to extend its contract with Beijing’s Parkview Green that housed its showroom.

Earlier, reports had emerged stating that Tesla was considering the closure of some major showrooms in China due to descending footfall of people amid Covid-related restrictions in the country.

Tesla aims to start mass production of its Cybertruck at the end of 2023, two years after the initial target for the long-awaited pickup truck Chief Executive Elon Musk unveiled in 2019, two people with knowledge of the plans told Reuters.

Tesla said last month that it was working on readying its Austin, Texas plant to build the new model with “early production” set to start in the middle of 2023. “We’re in the final lap for Cybertruck,” Musk told a conference call with financial analysts.

A gradual ramp in the second half of next year to full output for the sharp-angled electric truck would mean that Tesla would not be recording revenue until early 2024 for a full-quarter of production on a new model seen as key to its growth.

It would also mean a wait of another year for the estimated hundreds of thousands of potential buyers who have paid $100 to reserve a Cybertruck in one of the most highly anticipated, and closely tracked electric vehicle launches ever.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

It has not announced final pricing on the Cybertruck, showed the production version of the vehicle or specified how it will manage the battery supply for the new model.

In 2019, Tesla had projected an initial price of under $40,000, but prices for new vehicles have shot higher since then and Tesla has raised prices across its lineup.

The company has pushed back production timing three times since: from late 2021 to late 2022, then to early 2023 and most recently to the mid-2023 target for initial production.

The launch of the Cybertruck will give Tesla an EV entrant in one of the most profitable segments of the U.S. market and a competitor to electric pickups from the likes of Ford Motor Co and Rivian Automotive, both of which have launched models in still-limited numbers.

In January, Musk had cited shortages in sourcing components as the reason for pushing the launch of Cybertruck into 2023.

In May, Tesla stopped taking orders for the Cybertruck outside North America. Musk said then the company had "more orders of the first Cybertrucks than we could possibly fulfill for three years after the start of production."

Automakers often ramp production slowly for an all-new model like the Cybertruck.

Analysts have also cautioned that a weakening global economy will start to weigh on sales for Tesla, which has so far been able to sell every car it makes. Musk has said he expected a coming recession would last “probably until Spring of ’24.”

IDRA Group, the Italian company making the Giga Press that will be used for die casting parts for the Cybertruck, said in a LinkedIn post last week that the 9,000-ton machine for truck part production was packed and ready to be shipped.

Tesla plans mass production start for Cybertruck at end of 2023

After taking over the microblogging site Twitter, billionaire Elon Musk is looking at new revenue streams to make more profit out of the social media giant. Reports say Twitter is currently planning to charge around twenty dollars for the new Twitter blue subscription from the users.

Billionaire Elon Musk is looking at new revenue streams after completing Twitter takeover

Less than a week after buying Twitter, Elon Musk is pushing major changes to the platform. Reports have emerged that Twitter could start charging users for the verified status.

Gravitas: Will verified users lose the blue tick?

After reports emerged that the new Elon Musk-led regime at Twitter will charge verified users $20 per month to keep or even obtain the blue tick, the overall reaction from those who possess the badge has been negative. Many have argued that if anybody could get a blue tick, the verification system will be rendered meaningless. For it was designed to substantiate the veracity of handles of notable people, including celebrities, intellectuals, journalists, and so on, and if the reports are true, trolls will reign supreme. Veteran American author Stephen King, lovingly called the king of horror by his fans, is also among those disgruntled by the reports suggesting in the future verified users may be asked to pay for the benefits.

Twitter revamping user verification process, says Musk

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX has introduced an ambitious project, Starlink, aiming to build a broadband network with a cluster of orbiting spacecraft in low earth orbit. These satellites will connect the world with internet services even to the remotest region. Traditionally, wireless networks and optic fibres were used. Elon Musk wishes to blast off more than 40,000 satellites in space. The already-launched satellite has played a crucial role in Ukrainian forces battling Russia.

The project aims to provide low-cost and reliable internet services to the world. As per an estimate, around 4 billion global citizens do not have access to uninterrupted internet. This project will boost connectivity in the world and can fasten the forces of globalisation.

Despite all positives, what worries astronomers is that the project has the ability to overrun satellites in space. At the same time, overcrowding the space increases the risk of collisions. Such collision will rain debris down on the Earth.

Andy Lawrence, Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh put forth the debris would burn up as it passes through the atmosphere. This small chunk can bring the aeroplane down.

Prof. Andy Lawrence asks Elon Musk to slow down and do some research to figure out the space debris issue. A similar view was put forth by an Amateur group the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh president Mark Phillips told The Sun news ‘we could end up with a view of an "artificial sky" if things continued.’

Hence comes the need to clean space debris. The Space Liability Convention of 1972 underlines the responsibility of a country in case of harm. Launching State is liable to pay compensation for the damage or harm incurred. Taking in reference to the Orbital Debris Quarterly News from NASA, there are around 25,182 pieces ranging more than 10 cm in the Low Earth Orbit. Of the total, 114 belong to the Indian Space assets as per the report.

Despite this convention, there is a lack of concrete law on space junk. If space debris is not regulated then Kessler Syndrome can be imminent in future.

After Twitter takeover, Musk asks managers to name employees to be laid off, plans to reform content policies

As top executives of Twitter pack their bags in the wake of Elon Musk's takeover, there are reports that the micro-blogging site’s co-founder Jack Dorsey is testing another social network app rivalling the blue bird.

According to People, a week before Musk finalised his acquisition deal, the 45-year-old former CEO released a press release stating that he is seeking beta testers for his decentralized social app Bluesky.

"The next step is to start testing the protocol. Distributed protocol development is a tricky process," the company shared in a news release last Tuesday.

"It requires coordination from many parties once a network is deployed, so we're going to start in private beta to iron out issues."

"As we beta test, we'll continue to iterate on the protocol specs and share details about how it works. When it's ready, we'll move to the open beta," the company’s statement said, sharing a link to sign up for the beta test's waitlist.

In the press release, the company said that the new app will use an Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol), which is a federated social network run by multiple sites instead of a single site.

"The word 'Bluesky' evokes a wide-open space of possibility. It was the original name for this project before it took shape, and continues to be the name of our company," the release stated. "We're calling the application we're building Bluesky because it will be a portal to the world of possibility on top of the AT Protocol," it said.

Last week, Dorsey in his Twitter post said that Bluesky will act as "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it"
