DRDO’s photonic radar: India’s light weapon shakes China and Pakistan

India has entered into a new quantum era by successfully demonstrating an experimental advancement through DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), IIT Delhi.&nbsp;The free-space quantum secure communication using quantum entanglement over a distance of more than one km was achieved via a free-space optical link established on the IIT Delhi campus.&nbsp;The experiment attained a secure key rate of nearly 240 bits per second with a quantum bit error rate of less than 7%.&nbsp;&nbsp;This entanglement-assisted quantum secure communication paves the way for real-time applications in quantum cyber security, including long-distance Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the development of quantum networks, and the future quantum internet. These efforts align with India’s broader objectives to advance quantum technologies for national development.&nbsp;Under the project ‘Design and development of photonic technologies for free space QKD’, sanctioned by Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management (DFTM), DRDO, the demonstration was given by Prof Bhaskar Kanseri’s research group in the presence of several dignitaries, including the DRDO DG (MED, COS &amp; CS), Director SAG, Director DFTM, Dean (R&amp;D) IIT Delhi, Director (DIA-CoE) and DRDO laboratory scientists.&nbsp;Quantum entanglement-based QKD offers several significant advantages over the traditional prepare-and-measure method by enhancing both security and functionality.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even if devices are compromised or imperfect, the use of quantum entanglement ensures the security of key distribution. Any attempt to measure or intercept the entangled photons disturbs the quantum state, allowing authorised users to detect the presence of an eavesdropper.&nbsp;Quantum communication provides fundamentally unbreakable encryption, making it a dual-use technology with applications in securing data in strategic sectors such as defence, finance, and telecommunications, as well as in protecting national security-related communications. Free-space QKD eliminates the need to lay optical fibers, which can be both disruptive and expensive, especially in challenging terrains and dense urban environments.&nbsp;Earlier, India’s first intercity quantum communication link between Vindhyachal and Prayagraj in 2022, using commercial-grade underground dark optical fiber was demonstrated by DRDO scientists along with Prof Bhaskar’s team. This missile has been indigenously developed by the laboratories of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad along with various other DRDO laboratories and Industry Partners.

The flight trial was carried out in the presence of senior scientists of DRDO and the Armed Forces.

India achieved another major milestone in the defence sector as the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) along with the Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday (Apr 3) conducted a successful flight test of nuclear capable Ballistic Missile Agni-Prime from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of the state of Odisha.&nbsp;

The launch took place at around 7:00 PM (IST). Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Strategic Forces Command and senior officials from the DRDO and the Indian Army witnessed the launch. Gen Chauhan and Chairman DRDO Samir V Kamat appreciated the efforts of the SFC and DRDO.&nbsp;

An official release by the government confirmed that the test met all the trial objectives validating its reliable performance as confirmed from the data captured by a number of Range Sensors deployed at different locations including two Downrange ships placed at the terminal point.&nbsp;

Before joining DRDO, Sheena worked at ISRO’s prestigious Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, where she worked for eight years. She later joined DRDO as lateral entry in 1999 soon after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. She has been working for the country’s Agni missile variants since then.

Inspired by the&nbsp;‘Missile Man’ of India&nbsp;and former DRDO chief and president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam, Sheena has numerous achievements and titles to her name during her tenure at the DRDO, including the prestigious “Scientist of the Year” award in 2016.

“I am really proud of being part of the Agni missile programme as the missiles are safeguarding the nation’s borders,” Sheena said in one of the media interviews earlier.

The Ministry of Defence released a statement saying that the flight test tracked various Telemetry and radar stations and monitored multiple re-entry vehicles.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the country had joined the select group of nations that have MIRV capability by successfully conducting the flight test.

With a 5000 km range, the Agni-5 is developed taking into consideration the long-term security needs of the country.

The Agni 1 to 4 missiles have ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km and have already been deployed.

India successfully conducted two flight tests of a very short-range air defence missile off the coast of Odisha, an eastern Indian state. The tests were carried out on Wednesday (Feb 28) and Thursday (Feb 29).&nbsp;

The defence ministry said, "The DRDO conducted two successful flight tests of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles on February 28 and 29 from a ground-based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha from integrated test range, Chandipur."&nbsp;

The statement added that the tests were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets under different interception scenarios.&nbsp;

The Very Short Range Air Defence System, or VSHORADS, is a fourth-generation, man-portable air defence system.&nbsp;

It is designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories and Indian industry partners.&nbsp;

Rajnath Singh, who is the defence minister, congratulated the DRDO and the Indian Army for the successful development trials. He said that the new missile, equipped with modern technologies, will give further technological boost to the armed forces.&nbsp;
