An indigenous rifle, named 'Ugram', developed in less than 100 days, was unveiled by India's Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO). 
 
The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), which is a unit of Hyderabad-based private firm Dvipa Armour India Private Limited and DRDO, has developed the 'Ugram' rifle. 
 
The rifle will be able to deploy rounds of 7.62 mm calibre, which will make it more ferocious compared to rifles which use 5.62 mm calibre rounds. An example of a rifle using 5.62 mm calibre rounds is the INSAS rifle, which is used popularly by the armed forces in India, including paramilitary forces.

The 'Ugram' rifle was developed by the DRDO keeping in mind the operational requirements of military, paramilitary and police forces, reported the Indian Express. 
 
The newly-created rifle weighs four kg and will have an effective range of 500 metres, which is nearly five football fields. The rifle has been developed in accordance with the General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQR) of the army. 
 
GQSR is among the initial processes in capital procurement. This also outlines the requirement of the equipment, its physical and operational details along with its maintainability and quality requirements. The rifle has 20 rounds and fires both single and automatic modes.

<h2 lang="en-US">Rifles go through tests for operational capability</h2>

"This was a mission-mode project taken up two years ago. After the ARDE designed the rifle, we started looking for a private industry partner for development and manufacturing," said ARDE Director Ankathi Raju, while speaking to&nbsp;Indian Express. 
 
"We have followed the concept of Development cum Production Partner, DcPP for the speedy progress of the project. Under this, the vendor is associated with us during the design and production too. After the product is made by the vendor, it will undergo acceptance trials. We placed the order for the assault rifle to the Hyderabad-based Dvipa Armour. The rifle will soon go for trials," said the ARDE director.

The rifle has been created in 100 days and will go through trials to test the weapon's operational capability in conditions like extreme heat, underwater and harsh winter, reported the Times of India. 
 
"While the process of design and design-related analysis started two years ago, the development in collaboration with the private vendor was completed in 100 days," said Ankathi Raju, while speaking to the Free Press Journal. 
 
In December, the procurement of 70,0000 SIG Sauer's SIG716 rifle was approved by the Defence Acquisition Council.

The Indian state of Maharashtra’s anti-terrorism squad (ATS) filed a chargesheet against Pune city-based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist, Pradeep Kurulkar who was allegedly lured by a Pakistani agent using the alias ‘Zara Dasgupta,’ reported PTI&nbsp;on Saturday (July 8).&nbsp;The DRDO scientist shared sensitive details about India’s missile systems as well as the country’s drone and robotics programmes with the female Pakistan-based intelligence operative, according to the charge sheet.

<h2>What did the ATS find&nbsp;about the case?</h2>

Kurulkar was arrested on May 3, on espionage charges while the charge sheet by the authorities in Maharashtra was submitted a week ago. The ATS has claimed that Kurulkar engaged in conversations with ‘Zara Dasgupta’ about Indian missile systems and other classified defence projects.

The now-former director of the DRDO (Engineers), the 60-year-old&nbsp;Kurulkar is currently in judicial custody. According to the ATS, Kurulkar and ‘Zara Dasgupta’ were in contact via WhatsApp and also via voice and video calls. In the chargesheet, the anti-terrorism squad claimed to have found “explosive” chats between the scientist and the Pakistani agent.&nbsp;

‘Dasgupta,’ who had claimed to be a United Kingdom-based software engineer, allegedly befriended Kurulkar by sending him obscene messages and videos. It was only after the investigation, that it was found that her IP address was tracked to Pakistan, said the ATS in the nearly 2000-page charge sheet.&nbsp;

“Kurulkar, who was attracted to her, stored the classified and sensitive information of DRDO on his personal phone and then allegedly shared it with Zara,” the chargesheet said, as quoted by PTI. The ATS also found chats which showed Kurulkar sharing his personal as well as official schedules and locations with her which he was not supposed to share with anyone.&nbsp;

<h2>What did they discuss?</h2>

According to the charge sheet, Kurulkar chatted with the Pakistani agent about classified information regarding the BrahMos Launcher, Drone, Unmanned Combat Vehicles (UCV), Agni Missile Launcher and Military Bridging System, among other things.&nbsp;

The ATS also alleged that the Pakistani agent created multiple fake accounts to engage with Kurulkar two of which were under the names Zara Dasgupta and Juhi Arora. In his messages, the DRDO scientist spoke about, “BrahMos, Agni 6, Rustom (a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned air vehicle), surface to air missiles, unmanned combat air vehicles, drone projects”.

<h2>About the case</h2>

The DRDO scientist was arrested, back in May, on allegations of espionage. In an official statement, he was accused of misusing “his post thereby compromising sensitive government secrets, which could pose a threat to India’s security if it falls into the hands of the enemy nation.”&nbsp;

According to the ATS, the two were in contact from June 2022 to December 2022. It was not until DRDO initiated an internal probe after his activities were found to be suspicious, Kurulkar blocked Dasgupta’s number in February, earlier this year.&nbsp;

During a forensic analysis of Kurular’s phone, experts at the DRDO also found malware and reported it to ATS. The DRDO scientist is currently in Pune’s Yerwada jail.&nbsp;

Dr Samir V. Kamat, the Secretary of the Department of Defence R&amp;D and Chairman of DRDO, commended the efforts of the teams from DRDO laboratories and the users involved in the test launch.

<h2>What is Agni Prime?&nbsp;</h2>

The Agni P missile, developed by India's DRDO, is a two-stage ballistic missile that uses solid propellant and is stored in a canister.&nbsp;

It is equipped with a redundant navigation and guidance system.&nbsp;

The Agni Prime missile is an advanced version that follows the Agni-I and Agni-II missiles which are currently in operational use by the Strategic Forces Command.

Agni P incorporates significant upgrades including an improved composite motor casing, a manoeuvrable reentry vehicle (MaRV), and enhanced propellants, navigation, and guidance systems.

With the inclusion of a MaRV, the Agni-P missile gains the ability to deliver warheads to two distinct targets.

While its range is not sufficient to cover all regions of mainland China, media outlets quoting experts suggest that the primary objective of the Agni-P is to counter the Armed Forces of Pakistan.

However, if strategically launched from a suitable location, it could also potentially target the western, central, and southern regions of China.

In its second flight test on 18 December 2021, the missile demonstrated reliable performance and the successful operation of advanced technologies integrated into the system.&nbsp;

Agni Prime, India's advanced missile capable of countering Pakistan

India announced&nbsp;late Thursday (June 1) that it has conducted a successful training launch of its Agni-1 ballistic missile&nbsp;from the island in the Indian state of Odisha named after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The successful training launch of the medium-range ballistic missile validated all operational and technical parameters of the strategic weapon said the Indian Ministry of Defence.&nbsp;

<h2>About the training launch</h2>

In a brief statement, the Indian defence ministry said, “A successful training launch of a medium-range ballistic missile, Agni-1, was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha, on June 1.”&nbsp;

It added, “The missile is a proven system, capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision. The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.”&nbsp;

The development of the Agni missile series began in early 1980 under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) led by former president, Dr Kalam, who played a key role in India’s missile and space programmes. India has since developed various variants of the Agni series of missiles.

<h2>Agni-1 ballistic missile</h2>

The word “Agni” means fire. In the last two decades or so India has moved to strengthen its strategic deterrent capability by developing various ballistic missiles, precision-guided munitions and related platforms.

The medium-range Agni-1 ballistic missile has a strike range of over 700 kilometres and weighs around 12,000 kilogrammes. It is also capable of carrying a payload of up to 1,000 kg. The development of Agni-1 began in 1999 and the missile underwent its first successful test launch in 2003 after a failed attempt a year prior.&nbsp;

<h2>India’s missile programme</h2>

The training launch also comes months after India successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V that can strike targets at ranges up to 5,000 km. Earlier this year, India also successfully carried out the maiden flight trial of an endo-atmospheric interceptor missile from a ship off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal.&nbsp;

A complaint has been filed against Kurulkar by Maharashtra ATS Kalachowki,&nbsp;in accordance with the Official Secrets Act of 1923 and other relevant sections.&nbsp;

As per&nbsp;the ATS, the investigation was started after the DRDO made a complaint. When Kurulkar was brought before a court the following day after being taken into custody on Wednesday, the judge remanded him to the care of the ATS.

Kurulkar&nbsp;reportedly made contact with Pakistani intelligence officers in the past year after appearing to be drawn to photographs of women on social media sites, according to DNA, which cited sources.

After bagging a $375mn order last year to supply BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines Marine Corps, Indo-Russian firm BrahMos Aerospace is now in serious talks to sell the missile to nations in SouthEast Asia and Middle East, the firm's CEO told WION. Atul Dinkar Rane said that Indonesia was among the South East Asian countries with which deliberations were underway.&nbsp;

Rane was in Chennai to unveil the latest version of the indigenous BrahMos missile Checkout equipment manufactured by Indian private firm Data Patterns. In simple terms, the checkout equipment is a sophisticated machine that can perform in-depth diagnostics on the working of all crucial electrical and electronic sub-systems on-board the missile. Once a missile completes a successful checkout, it is declared operational for use in the frontlines.&nbsp;

"The BrahMos missile is built to last as long as ten years. Annually, the Indian armed forces perform a complete health-check of the BrahMos missile, to ensure it is in perfect condition" he explained. Simply put, similar to how a gadget is connected to a computer, the missile is connected to the checkout equipment and tests are performed on it and detailed reports are obtained.&nbsp;

Queried about the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war on the Indo-Russian BrahMos supply chain, Rane said that the ongoing Geopolitical situation brings in trouble for any supply chain and the pandemic had also done so. However, he added that these were just small speed breakers and roadblocks and that the Brahmos supply chain is robust. "We have a wonderful order book till 2027....With a few new orders coming we have an order book filled till 2031" he added.

With hypersonic missiles being the buzzword, WION asked if BrahMos Aerospace was also working on that front. Rane said that a few nations were working on hypersonic missiles and that the systems are being tested. On the scenario in India, he said that the India's Government-run defence research lab DRDO and their Russian counterparts are working on developing the related technology. "Once the technology is available, BrahMos will be using it to create a hypersonic missile, we are waiting for that technology to be ready" he said.&nbsp;

The word 'BrahMos' is derived from the names of India's Brahmaputra river and Russia's Moskva river. The firm is responsible for designing, developing, producing and marketing the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile that can be fired from terrestrial, aerial and naval platforms. The missile is regarded as among the best in its class and can fly at speeds of Mach 2.8 or 2.8times the speed of sound.

The device can also be fitted onto ships and similar military platforms. The availability of space-based internet services would further augment the reach and connectivity of this product, he said. After the company develops the customised hardware and software, the completed product is handed over to the customer and they enjoy full control over it, he adds. A team of DRDO's Young Scientist Laboratory is working on these rat cyborgs which will have cameras placed on the head and electronic commands will be used to guide them using semi-invasive brain electrodes, said DRDO’s Young Scientist Laboratory (DYSL-AT) Director, P Shiva Prasad, after the World Science Congress' session.&nbsp;

“This is the first time India had engaged in developing such technology. Some foreign nations already have it. It will help armed forces in Intelligence Surveillance and Recovery (ISR) operations. Phase 1 trials, in which the rat will be controlled through commands of the operator, are underway,” Prasad said.

The indigenously developed surface-to-surface missiles will likely be deployed near India’s borders with China and Pakistan.&nbsp;

“A high-level meeting of the Defence Ministry cleared the acquisition of around 120 missiles for the armed forces and their deployment along the borders,” said a report by ANI citing senior defence sources. Additionally, it also suggests that the missiles will first be provided to the Indian Air Force followed by the Indian Army.&nbsp;

This comes after India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Pralay missile last year. What are some of the notable features of the ‘Pralay’ missile?

Developed by the DRDO, the ‘Pralay’ ballistic missile is a canisterised tactical, surface-to-surface, and short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) for battlefield use. It can hit targets from a distance of 150 to 500 km and is extremely difficult to intercept by enemy interceptor missiles, said a report by ANI. The missile is designed to destroy enemy radar, communication installations, command centres and airfields and follows a Quasi Ballistic Trajectory which means the object takes a low curved path after being shot. Pralay is powered by a solid fuel rocket motor and is a high explosive preformed fragmentation warhead that weighs somewhere between 350 kg to 700 kg which also accounts for its&nbsp;Penetration-Cum-Blast (PCB) and Runaway Denial Penetration Submunition (RDPS). It also has a speed of at least 2,000 km per hour and its missile guidance system includes state-of-the-art navigation and integrated avionics.&nbsp;

Additionally, like most tactical ballistic missiles it is mobile which means it can be used quickly on the battlefield. Pralay also has the ability to evade any anti-ballistic missile (ABM) interceptors by performing mid-air manoeuvres by using a manoeuvrable re-entry vehicle. When a high-explosive warhead, like the one Pralay missile is equipped with, explodes, its pieces are thrown at a high speed which can inflict heavy damage.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the PCB bomb in the tactical ballistic missile is meant to blast through underground targets like military bunkers while the RDPS bombs damage airport runways rendering them useless for flights to take off or land. The surface-to-surface missile is also reportedly intended to match China’s Dong Feng 12 (CSS-X-15) missile and can be compared to the Russian 9k 720 Iskander missile or the US Army’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).&nbsp;

What has happened till now?

The DRDO began developing the Pralay missile in 2015 after being pushed for by the late General Bipin Rawat who served as India’s Chief of Army Staff. It was tested twice on two consecutive days, December 21 and December 22, last year. The launch took place from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island and met all the mission objectives, said the DRDO after which it was deemed a successful launch.&nbsp;

The second launch tested Pralay with a heavier payload and a different range, “to prove the precision and lethality of the weapon”, said the DRDO. They added that the launch on December 22 was also monitored by a range of sensors and instruments including telemetry, radar, and electro-optic tracking system deployed across the eastern coast and the downrange ships positioned near the impact point.&nbsp;

Explained: Indian armed forces may deploy ‘Pralay’ missile along Pakistan, China border

Earlier this week, India successfully tested an indigenously-designed High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) called Abhyas in Odisha. The trial, which took place from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur beach, was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).&nbsp;

During the demonstration, this aircraft was launched using twin under-slung boosters, which provided the initial acceleration. A ground-based controller flew the target air vehicle in a pre-designated low-altitude flight path. ITR deployed various tracking sensors (including an electro-optical targeting system and radar) to monitor the target. This particular test flight demonstrated the aircraft's performance at low altitudes. During this trial, Abhyas also showcased a high subsonic speed trajectory with high endurance in addition to sustained level and high manoeuvrability.&nbsp;

What is DRDO Abhyas?

Abhyas is a 2.3 metres long 75-kg drone developed by DRDO, with eminent contributions by the Bengaluru-based laboratory- Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE). The drone is made to be used as a target for different missile systems. It is capable of reaching an altitude of more than five kilometres at half the speed of sound. To sustain it during endurance flights at high subsonic speeds, it is equipped with a small gas turbine engine.&nbsp;

Abhyas, the country's first locally developed system, is designed to present a realistic threat scenario weapon systems' practice. However,&nbsp; the aircraft is more than just an aerial target built for training purposes. People in the know have claimed that it will also serve other purposes. While these purposes have not been disclosed, the possible use of Abhyas as a decoy aircraft is quite clear. Official sources suggest that the military can launch the aerial vehicle with the help of a laptop anywhere.&nbsp;

It is also interesting to note that the air vehicle is programmed for a completely autonomous flight. This means that Abhyas can fly under the control of automatic systems and does not require intervention from a human pilot. It is equipped with a micro-electromechanical systems-based inertial navigation system and also sports a flight control computer for guidance and control. In addition to this, DRDO Abhyas is also equipped with a radio altimeter for very low-altitude flight and a data link for encrypted communication.

Features And Uses

Reports suggest that Abhyas features an adjustable simulated radar cross-section (RCS) for live-fire exercises and other drills. The aircraft makes use of a lunberg lens in the nose cone to improve its radar reflectiveness. Its RCS can be increased to 50 times its size in order to let it imitate a fighter jet. As the recent test has already shown, it can also be used to imitate a high-speed subsonic missile. Furthermore, Abhyas has been claimed to have abilities that allow its use as an effective jammer platform.

It is believed that the target drone also features sensors, including acoustic missile distance indicators, which allow DRDO engineers to collect information on live-fire trials. Yet another important feature of the system is that all of its systems come from Indian industries.&nbsp;

Scientists and other officials involved with the project have shed light on the purposes of the aerial vehicle over the course of the past three years. The primary purpose of Abhyas is to sharpen the existing air-defence mechanism. Targets imitating fighter aircraft to assist in training are peacetime operations to hone the skills of military personnel.

Target missiles and drones such as this one play a crucial part in the development of a range of interceptors, including surface-to-air systems. Systems such as this recently tested one also contribute to the development of cruise and ballistic missile defense systems. Abhyas is designed to simulate aircraft for air-to-air exercises, as well as endoatmospheric (referring to lower atmosphere- about 100 km above the Earth's surface) surface-to-air interception tests.

Abhyas can also carry warheads- an ability that the system, in its present form, is not meant for. However, sources believe that this capability has the potential to be used in the near future based on the requirements of the services.

Better Than Predecessors

Abhyas' predecessor target drones include Fluffy, Ulka, and Lakshya. DRDO developed Fluffy in the early 1970s for the Indian military. This model could only be launched up to a little over 9100 metres and had a maximum endurance of five minutes. DRDO Fluffy's production was discontinued in favour of a simpler, more economical model.

DRDO also designed and developed Ulka- the target drone that is supposed to be launched from subsonic or supersonic aircraft using an ejector release unit. Ulka can reach a maximum altitude of 13,000 m at speeds ranging from 0.7 to 1.4 Mach. It can not only simulate the speed and altitude characteristics of a variety of aircraft, but can also use false radar signatures.

Third, DRDO developed Lakshya. This aircraft is a cost-effective, re-usable aerial target system that can reach high subsonic levels. DRDO's website claims that this aerial vehicle is powered by a gas turbine engine and can be launched either from land or from a ship. It carries two tow targets, each with a tow length of 1.5 km, possessing radar.&nbsp;

However, the Abhyas system, with its sensors, altitude ceiling and its multifunctional abilities, takes an edge over its predecessors. Given its ability to perform multiple roles, this system can cause immense damage to an adversary.

India's Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO), the country's premier Military Research and Development agency is working on developing the World's lightest bulletproof vest and it would be tested in about two months' time, Dr G. Satheesh Reddy, Chairman DRDO told WION. He said that this bulletproof vest was being developed as a 'DIA'(DRDO Industry Academia) effort, in one of the ten DIA centres in the country. He was speaking at the concluding event of India's first-ever privately-run Defence Expo, held in Chennai.&nbsp;

Referring to the ongoing changes in India's Defence industry, he said that the industry had reached a level where they were building to meet the specifications as put forth by the customers or users. He pointed out that missiles, bombs, radars, ammunition and guns are being manufactured in a big way by the private industry, as opposed to the earlier times, when solely state-run organizations used to perform this task.&nbsp;

Hailing the ongoing development of the 155 mm x 52 Cal Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), Dr Reddy said that this Indian gun was going to be the world's longest-range artillery weapon of its kind. This weapon is being developed for the Indian Army, by DRDO in partnership with private firms Bharat Forge and Tata Power SED.

"As part of Government support for the private defence sector, nearly 300 private industries have used DRDO facilities for testing. There are also special funding schemes provided by the Departments of Defence Production and R&amp;D to boost private sector capabilities" he elaborated. The DRDO chief also mentioned that there are nearly 2000 Tier 1 &amp; 2 defence industries in India, while the Tier 3 industries are over 10,000 in number.&nbsp;

Titled "Defence &amp; technology Expo Empowering MSME" the event was organized by Swatantra Foundation, a think tank based in the Southern Indian city. "Our focus for this event is to connect MSMEs with large Defence manufacturers through B2B meetings to create business opportunities,” said S. Ramasubramanian, Founder &amp; President of Swatantra Foundation. The event brought together Indian Micro Small and Medium Industries(MSMEs) and large defence manufacturers to create business opportunities, where the former can supply components for the latter.&nbsp;

Notably, the Indian start-up hopes to fly their newly-developed system to space by early 2023 and also have their technology commercialised.

After being placed in orbit by rockets, satellites have to rely on their on-board fuel and engines to make maneuvers, in order to avoid colliding with space debris and to remain in their precise orbits, while functioning in the harsh environments of space. While this task has been handled for several decades by engines powered by fuels such as Mono methyl hydrazine, such fuels are toxic, highly volatile and cancer-causing, thus raising several concerns over their safety.

According to Ashtesh, who serves as the CTO at Manastu, they have developed a new propulsion technology for satellites and it will be powered by 'MS-289' which is a proprietary blend of Hydrogen peroxide and additives. In order to initiate the combustion of this novel fuel, the company will be using a chemical catalyst, that performs the similar function of a sparkplug in an automobile. About this technology, the company says "Fuel is as safe as common salt, hence less safety precautions and less infrastructure cost, Agile System due to ability to produce higher thrust compared to Electric Propulsion, 50 per cent&nbsp;Higher Performance due to higher combustion temperature and higher density of our fuel and engine design".

Three variants of this propulsion system have been built- to meet the requirements of satellites of different sizes (weighing over 100kg, small cube satellites etc. In addition to this, as part of their future endeavours they aim to develop satellite refuelling systems that can help extend the life of in orbit satellites.

Similar to an aerial-refuelling tanker that can extend the range of aircraft, this concept hopes to create a mechanism where a tanker(carrying satellite-grade) fuel can dock with a satellite and fill its tank, to extend its life. At the end of the satellite's operational life, similar tankers would also be used to de-orbit the satellite, thus preventing it from becoming space debris and a threat to other orbital assets.

By September this year, five-year-old company is optimistic about conducting a final test that involves putting the satellites through the rigours of space-like conditions(thermovac test), at a test facility. Once this test is complete, the team hopes to launch their satellite to space in early 2023 and prove its practical worthiness and capabilities, following which they can commercialise the technology.

According to team Manastu, India's state-run Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed up to have this technology onboard an Indian strategic satellite, whereas a French company is also in talks to utilise this system in the final stage of their rocket, for orbit correction and maneuvers.

DRDO said the missile hit the designated target with a high degree of accuracy during the test launch. The agency said the sensors tracked the impact point across the eastern coast including the missile trajectory.

Reports say the missile is based on the Prithvi defence vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme.

The successful launch was applauded by the defence minister Rajnath Singh calling it a "significant milestone".
